Carnival Makes It Clear About Boarding Name Requirement

Ensuring that the correct paperwork and documentation is in order to set sail can be nerve-wracking for cruise passengers, especially since missing just one piece of paperwork might mean being denied boarding.

Unfortunately, social media rumors often spread quickly about supposed documentation requirements, which can increase travelers’ anxiety if they aren’t sure what the truth may be.

The most recent such rumor is the idea that a traveler’s middle name is required on documentation or they will not be permitted onboard their ship. A concerned guest reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, to check on this rumor.

“John, according to some people on [social media], a new requirement is that your middle name is now required on the cruise documents or else you cannot sail,” the guest explained. “People confirmed the call center is saying this is true. Why have you not told anyone? Many say like me they have not received the e-mail!”

First of all, guests should not trust rumors from social media threads, groups, or pages without verifying the information for themselves. Even posts that claim others have “confirmed” information with the authorities should be treated cautiously and verified individually.

Heald, who often helps upcoming Carnival cruise passengers understand what documentation is required for sailing, has gotten this question multiple times and took the opportunity to dispel the rumor completely.

“As you are one of 11 people who have asked this in the last 24 hours please let me say that there has been no recent correspondence from Carnival regarding this and therefore no changes,” Heald noted. “I thought it best I mention this even though I really do not understand how, if this was correct, that we would implement this as some do not have a middle name.”

Many frequent Carnival guests chimed in discussing other middle name problems, such as having more than one middle name or having just an initial rather than a full middle name – none of which have ever been a problem, as it’s not required.

It is important to note that how one fills out booking information should match official, government-issued documents so there is no confusion or delay when checking in at the cruise terminal.

For example, cruise reservations should not be made with nicknames – “Betsy” instead of “Elizabeth” or “Bob” instead of “Robert” – as legal names must be listed on the ship’s official manifest.

Middle names, however, are not required. If a guest uses their middle name rather than their first name, they will need to remember to make reservations and bookings with their legal first name.

Barcelona Carnival Cruise Terminal

This is not a new policy but rather has been Carnival Cruise Line’s travel documentation policy for many years, which specifically discusses first and last names.

“It is important that the guest’s full name (first name and last name) on the cruise and airline tickets be the same as the guest’s unexpired, government-issued photo ID that will be used for travel identification,” the policy reads.

More Documentation Confusion

This confusion about whether or not middle names are required on cruise documentation (again, they aren’t!) comes as the Real ID deadline approaches for US travelers. Similarly, there have recently been updates to documentation requirements for visiting the UK and Europe.

All of these different paperwork requirements can be confusing to cruise travelers, on top of just understanding whether or not a passport is required to take a cruise.

Ultimately, it is up to guests to understand what documentation is required for their cruise vacation and to ensure they have all the correct paperwork.

When in doubt, social media groups are not the best place to go for such critical information. Instead, contacting the cruise line directly is the best option to ensure accurate, updated information so every guest is properly prepared for their cruise vacation.

Carnival Reminds Dressing Guests to Close Their Curtains

There are some things that should simply be common sense – such as closing your cabin door or pulling the curtains closed while in various states of undress.

However, my 14-year-old self learned that this is not the case the hard way while sailing onboard Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas many years ago.

I entered my interior stateroom, which overlooked the promenade, only to make eye contact with an elderly cruiser in the cabin window directly across from me, who was standing there stark naked.

More than a decade later, with that image forever burned into my brain, the topic of closing one’s curtains, while undressed, is once again up for debate in the cruise community – this time on Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald’s Facebook page.

Heald received a complaint from a recent guest of Carnival Liberty, who didn’t realize that the Conquest-class ship would be docking close enough to another ship while in Cozumel, Mexico, for other cruisers to see into her stateroom.

“She had not drawn the balcony cabin curtains before going to bed and both her and her partner, woke up, stood up and started to potter about the cabin ‘ au natural” as they say in Cleveland, Ohio before realizing that guests on the Carnival Legend were enjoying the show,” Heald relayed in a Facebook post.

Understandably embarrassed, the passenger told Heald that an announcement should have been made to remind guests to close their curtains before arriving in the port.

“Her plea was to have the captain or cruise director announce if the ship was docking next to another ship to inform the guests to close their curtains. I am not sure we need to do this but it is perhaps a warning to close the curtains if you have a balcony or ocean view cabin,” Heald continued.

While this is a largely impractical request, let this woman’s story serve as a cautionary tale to close your curtains if you don’t want to put on an accidental show while in port.

Carnival Cruise Community Supports Modesty

While your cruise cabin should feel like you’re home away from home, it never hurts to take a beat to consider what your fellow passengers might be able to see – even in interior cabins that look into common spaces within the ship.

Of course, docking near another ship may make your cabin visible – but certain lighting conditions can make the view clearer for both interior and exterior accommodations, such as when it’s dark outside but the lights in your stateroom are turned on.

Among Heald’s Facebook followers, maintaining privacy was seen as something that should have been common sense and not something that would warrant a reminder.

“Folks with windows in their cabins could close their curtains at night and then open them up after they have clothes on. No need for the captain or cruise director to be involved. On Port day, they are busy,” one person commented.

“Apparently common sense is seriously lacking these days,” another added.

That said, it’s not the first time passengers have accidentally provided the cruise community with a show while docked in port – and likely won’t be the last.

During the christening ceremony for Explora Journeys Explora II on September 16, 2024, a couple was caught on camera becoming intimate on their (not so) private balcony.

This likely was even worse than just waking up exposed on a normal port day, as this unidentified duo, who were guests of the smaller ship’s maiden voyage, were caught in the buff during a formal event.

At the end of 2024, Heald also had to reaffirm that topless sunbathing was not allowed on Carnival cruise ships and hadn’t been for many years.

New MSC Cruise Ship to Debut Unique Film-to-Concert Experience

With many modern cruise ships offering Broadway-caliber shows and/or large-scale performances with death defying stunts in the same vein as Cirque du Soleil, the cruise lines are constantly thinking about how to take their entertainment offerings to the next level.

This is why MSC Cruises has dreamed up an extra special concert to headline the entertainment that will be offered onboard the upcoming MSC World America – which is due to enter service in just a few short months in April 2025.

The show, called “Dirty Dancing in Concert,” will be the first ever film-to-concert experience to celebrate this classic Lionsgate film at sea.

The “Dirty Dancing” movie came out in 1987 and was directed by Emile Ardolino. It starred Patrick Swayze (Johnny Castle) and Jennifer Grey (Frances “Baby” Houseman) as the dance instructor and young woman who enter into a forbidden romance.

The beloved movie will be brought to life in the The World Theatre with live singers, dancers, and musicians who will perform alongside a screening of the film.

In the grand finale, guests of MSC’s fourth World-class cruise ship will be encouraged to join in the show by dancing and singing from their seats and the aisles.

“Delivering a diverse entertainment lineup for every type of holidaymaker is central to creating an unforgettable cruise experience. MSC World America provides an incredible platform to push the boundaries of entertainment at sea, and we’re introducing some exciting new concepts and productions,” said Steve Leatham, Vice President of Entertainment at MSC Cruises

Each sailing will include multiple opportunities for guests to take in the 90-minute production, with at least one matinee hosted on sea days. The World Theatre will be able to accommodate 1,153 of the mega ship’s up to 6,762 guests at each performance.

This show and more will be available when the 205,700-gross ton vessel officially sets sail on her maiden voyage on April 12, 2025 – which will be a simultaneous 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing and 14-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailing.

She is currently undergoing the final stages of construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, but she will soon start preparing for her Transatlantic voyage to her first homeport: Florida’s PortMiami.

More New Entertainment Onboard MSC World America

MSC’s newest and largest ship will launch with several different types of entertainment onboard to appeal to every type of cruiser – including musical performances, concerts (i.e. the aforementioned “Dirty Dancing in Concert”), magic shows, circus-style shows, and interactive game shows.

In addition to the “Dirty Dancing” headlining concert, five other new shows and performances will be debuting onboard between the World Theatre and the Panorama Lounge, which seats approximately 462 passengers.

“Our headline entertainment experiences, “Dirty Dancing in Concert” in the World Theatre and Queen Symphonic in the Panorama Lounge, will be unlike anything previously seen on our ships, resonating with both American and international audiences,” said Leatham.

Joining “Dirty Dancing” in the World Theatre will be “Odyssey,” which is an acrobatic spectacle; “Momentous,” which will be one of the largest illusion shows at sea; and “Hall of Fame,” which is a live concert that pays homage to pop music icons.

The Panorama Lounge will host two more intimate, but equally exciting theatrical music concerts.

These will include “Queen Symphonic,” which is an updated version of the international concert “Queen Rock Symphonic” that celebrates Queen’s greatest hits; and “Cinesonic,” which brings iconic movie songs and cinematic scores to life.

“These are just the beginning of our extensive entertainment options, which include an adults-only Comedy Club, authentic Dueling Pianos, and interactive family game shows. The onboard entertainment truly must be seen to be believed,” continued Leatham.

Many of these interactive experiences will be found onboard in the Loft – which is one of the ship’s newest venues that can be found in the Terraces District – as well as at the Street Theatre and in Luna Park.

Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas to Debut Sooner Than Expected

While there was a seemingly endless wait for Icon of the Seas to debut in January 2024, guests waiting for her sister ship, Star of the Seas, will not have to wait as long as expected.

Royal Caribbean has received word that the ship will be delivered sooner than planned, and as a result, is adding two new sailings ahead of the ship’s planned inaugural sailing.

This follows the announcement made nearly a year ago that the ship would be delayed. At that time, her first two cruises sailing, which were to have departed on August 17 and August 24, respectively, had to be cancelled.

Guests booked on the updated maiden voyage – departing Port Canaveral on August 31, 2025 – were among the first to receive word about the now-earlier debut, as it includes a special offer for them to consider.

“We have an updated timeline for the arrival of Star of the Seas at Port Canaveral!” the announcement read. “Constructing such a large and amazing ship is challenging, and while delivery can sometimes be delayed, there are other times where we get to sail our new ship earlier.”

The cruise line goes on to explain that the ship’s planned August 31, 2025 sailing – a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary – will remain as the official first full sailing with special events, swag, and recognition.

Two new cruises, however, are being added as “showcase sailings” departing August 23 and August 27. The 4-night sailings will include visits to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island destination in the Bahamas.

Guests already booked on the August 31 inaugural cruise have the exclusive opportunity to book one or both of the new showcase sailings, or else move their original booking to one of the earlier cruises if they prefer. This opportunity will open on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

If travelers have booked suites, their exact same stateroom choice will be held aboard the earlier sailings until Thursday, February 6 as a courtesy in case they do wish to adjust or expand their travel plans.

Guests booked in interior, oceanview, and balcony cabins will be able to choose from the same stateroom categories, though the exact stateroom numbers are not guaranteed.

There will be no additional charge for moving to an earlier sailing date, and the cruise fare rate will be prorated to the shorter 4-night rate if guests aren’t remaining on the first full sailing as well.

What Will Be Special About the New Sailings?

The two new “showcase sailings” for Star of the Seas will not have all the bells and whistles of an official inaugural cruise, but travelers are sure to enjoy some special moments onboard nonetheless.

This will undoubtedly include a celebratory atmosphere from the crew as they welcome their very first guests onboard. Sailor – the ship’s Official Dog Officer – will also likely be on hand (or paw!) for greetings as well.

It is possible, however, that some offerings – such as shows or other onboard entertainment – may not be available for these new, earlier cruises. This can be a common risk travelers take when they book an inaugural cruise.

While the two new sailings are being announced as “4-Night Perfect Day” cruises, the ship could also visit Nassau during each voyage. It is also possible the stays at CocoCay could be longer, or the ship may spend the rest of each sailing at sea instead.

Regardless of the exact itinerary, guests will have ample time to enjoy everything Star of the Seas has to offer, from phenomenal shows and exquisite eateries to the Thrill Island waterpark, the Crown’s Edge ropes course, the stunning interior promenade, and much more.

Star of the Seas is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in southern Finland.

While construction is proceeding along so well that the ship can be delivered early, she still has to pass her sea trials and undergo final outfitting, as well as make her first transatlantic crossing, before welcoming guests aboard.

The tremendous vessel will be homeported year-round from Port Canaveral, offering alternating Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean itineraries, all of which will visit Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Outbreak Hits Passengers and Crew on Coral Princess

It’s only the first month of the year but a fifth US-based cruise ship has confirmed a gastrointestinal outbreak taking place on a current voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, just days after another cruise line returned to the city’s Port Everglades with 3 percent of its ship passengers ill.

Princess Cruises’ 91,627-gross-ton Coral Princess, which departed on a 16-night journey from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale on January 20, 2025, reported the outbreak to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on January 27.

The ship was calling in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, when the medical team revealed 59 of its 1,894 passengers and 12 of 885 crew members had symptoms of gastrointestinal illness.

Symptoms of the illness, officially referred to as acute gastroenteritis (AGE), predominantly include vomiting and diarrhea, as well as abdominal cramps, muscle aches, headache, or fever, according to the CDC.

The CDC reports the illness is due to norovirus and that Coral Princess is now increasing its cleaning and disinfection procedures to follow the CDC’s outbreak prevention response plan.

Ill passengers and crew have been isolated as the vessel continues its itinerary, which includes calls to Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Panama City, Panama, ahead of a crossing through the Panama Canal; and Cartagena, Colombia.

Coral Princess is scheduled to arrive in Fort Lauderdale on February 5.

Although afflicted passengers can recover from the illness in one to three days, the CDC reports they may still spread norovirus for up to two weeks from recovery, which is well after the Princess Cruises ship arrives at port.

Worth Reading: Crew Members Restricted From Port Visit Due to Illness Outbreak

This has prompted the cruise line to announce that the ship would conduct a deep clean during its call in Puntarenas.

“We recommend that you disembark the ship during the cleaning operations,” stated Princess Cruises in a public health advisory. “If you are unable to leave the ship, please vacate your stateroom when requested to.”

The letter also warned that some “services and facilities may be temporarily unavailable while the cleaning operation is complete.”

Most cruise ships also conduct a deep clean between cruises, which may delay Coral Princess’ subsequent embarkation on February 5 ahead of its 16-night Panama Canal passage to Los Angeles.

Rising Tide of Cruise Ship Illness

January is seeing a surge in gastrointestinal outbreaks, with the CDC receiving word of six additional situations aboard cruise ships since January 1, 2025.

The incidents began on January 3, when Oceania Cruises’ Nautica reported that 15 guests and 16 crew members were experiencing symptoms of an unspecified gastrointestinal illness.

A day later, Holland America Line’s Eurodam announced that 86 passengers and eight crew members were ill with norovirus.

Both ships departed on their voyages in December 2024, keeping the official outbreak record in the CDC’s 2024 roster, although the illnesses were reported in January.

Earlier this month, the government health agency witnessed an outbreak aboard Sea Cloud Cruises’ Sea Cloud Spirit, where a presumed and similar ciguatera outbreak hit 30 percent of the vessel’s crew. No passengers were affected.

Additionally, Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray, Holland America Line’s Volendam, and Viking Ocean’s Viking Mars have experienced gastrointestinal illnesses, although the causes have yet to be determined.

Unfortunately, the surge follows a harsh December, during which, in addition to the two aforementioned ships on December departures, five more vessels reported norovirus outbreaks.

Holland America Line has experienced the most outbreaks, with five of 23 outbreaks between January 1, 2024, and January 28, 2025, taking place aboard its ships.

Despite the reports, the likelihood of getting sick on a cruise ship is generally low, says the CDC. In fact, it shows an average of 12 outbreaks per year between 2006 and 2019.

Latest Update on Carnival Sunshine Dry Dock in France

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunshine has just recently entered dry dock in Marseille, France for regular maintenance and refurbishment. The ship’s current cruise director, James Love, is offering fans an insider’s look at what that really means for the ship and the remaining crew onboard.

First off, dry dock really is dry – the ship is brought into a construction bay and the seawater is drained away. This gives engineers, technicians, and shipyard workers safer and easier access to the ship’s hull, thrusters, and propellors.

Loose paint, barnacles, and rust is scraped away, and the ship will receive a fresh and beautiful new coat of paint on her red, white, and blue livery, which she first received in 2021. A close-up view of the ship’s hull at this time really shows how much that new paint is needed!

Such paint is more than just aesthetic, though. It helps keep marine life, such as barnacles and algae, from growing on the hull and helps reduce friction for more efficient fuel usage.

Love does describe the type of refurbishment the ship is receiving for her onboard systems, and what this means for how the ship will appear after the work is finished.

“The ship is going to dry dock for general maintenance not a complete refurbishment,” he explained.

“Think of it like getting your car detailed, oil change, getting the inspection sticker, it’s still the same car just freshened up. The Sunshine has seen the salt air and ocean for years. Every few years, ships need to get a check up. That’s what we are doing.”

Sometimes, a cruise ship might receive much more extensive updates during a dry dock, such as removing or adding venues or even completely renovating the entire vessel. This is not the case with Carnival Sunshine‘s current dry dock, however, as the updates are more about refreshment and maintenance.

“She will still be the Sunshine that you know and love,” Love said.

Of course, guests who love the 103,881-gross-ton vessel may have cause to be concerned about how much the ship will change. There was a time in the past when the ship entered dry dock and left 49 days later as a completely new cruise ship – so new, she got a new name!

The former Carnival Destiny was the first vessel in the Carnival fleet to receive all the Funship 2.0 amenities, and so extensive was that 2013 renovation that she was renamed Carnival Sunshine.

The project cost a staggering $155 million and included adding more than 180 cabins to the ship as well as a number of new venues and restaurants.

Carnival Sunshine has become a very popular ship in the fleet, and her current dry dock will make her truly shine once more with general maintenance and refreshment updates.

What About Crew Members Onboard?

During a dry dock – and Carnival Sunshine will be at the shipyard for approximately 3 weeks – many crew members leave and either report to other vessels or return home for a vacation at the end of their planned contracts.

Love shared details about the entertainment team, which normally includes a full team of singers and dancers, multiple talented musicians, and the full Fun Squad that is responsible for onboard activities.

“The only entertainment team we have onboard right now is myself (currently on vacation on the ship), the entertainment director, 1 Fun Squad, and 1 musician,” Love explained.

The rest of the team will return to the ship at the end of January in preparation for her return to service.

“We will have a set schedule as to what will be happening,” Love said. “We have a rough schedule right now but are awaiting answers before it is finalized.”

Each cruise ship’s entertainment director, cruise director, and hotel director collaborate to plan out activity schedules. This includes when top tier production shows or other entertainment options, such as the ever-popular “Love and Marriage Show” or onboard game shows are scheduled.

Carnival Sunshine will return to service on Sunday, February 16, 2025, with her first departure from Norfolk, Virginia – an 8-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary to Amber Cove, Grand Turk, and Princess Cays.

The ship will also be offering Bermuda and Bahamas itineraries. In September 2026, Carnival Sunshine will also offer Canada/New England autumn sailings from Norfolk, and exciting new itinerary option guests are eager to try.

The ship will not be returning to Charleston, South Carolina as a homeport, as the agreement with the South Carolina Ports Authority has not been extended at this time. Future port development, however, may support Carnival Cruise Line’s return to the charming southern port in the years to come.

You Can Now Try Out a Residential Cruise Ship First

Villa Vie Residences, the world cruise brand that enables passengers to buy a stateroom or rent one long-term onboard Villa Vie Odyssey, has rolled out some new options in a bid to boost guest numbers.

Villa Vie Odyssey is the former Braemar that sailed for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and was acquired by Villa Vie Residences in 2023. The ship has capacity for about 600 guests, but is currently sailing her first world voyage with roughly 125 guests.

That leaves plenty of empty cabins on a ship that was embroiled in controversy through the second half of 2024, when delay after delay impacted her launch. Villa Vie Odyssey finally set sail in October 2024, some three months later than scheduled.

New alternatives announced on January 28, 2025 include a Seasonal Ownership plan, a financing program for two cabin-purchase options, and a new offer to take a trial cruise on the residential ship before agreeing to buy a cabin.

Under the Seasonal Ownership plan, cruisers pay $24,999 per person to receive 120 credits per contract. Credits can be redeemed for cruises in inside, ocean view, or balcony cabins ranging from 30 days to nine months. Annual fees of $7,999 per contract also apply.

The company’s new financing option is valid on the full ownership and Endless Horizons plans. Under full ownership, guests buy a cabin for rates starting at $139,000 per person in a contract valid for 15 years.

Endless Horizons, which is designed for retirees, requires a cabin purchase starting at $349,999 per person with unlimited access to an ocean view villa.

The financing plan includes a 25% deposit and another 25% due 180 days before embarking the ship. The remaining balance is paid in 20% annual installments.

Villa Vie Residences’ new Try Before You Buy offer essentially is a 7-day cruise onboard the ship with single occupancy fares of $1,499 and double occupancy fares of $1,998 for ocean view accommodations.

“We’re making the dream of traveling the globe by ship more attainable. With our new Seasonal Ownership and Financing Options, travelers can now experience this extraordinary lifestyle with minimal commitment and maximum flexibility,” said Mikael Petterson, chairman of Villa Vie Residences.

It isn’t the first time that Villa Vie Residences has carved out new options to gain guests. In November 2024, it introduced the Tour La Vie program, which offers guests one- to four-year options in an ocean view villa.

The one-year deal costs $49,999 per person, double, and $79,000 per person, single. Rates rise with the cruise length chosen, with the four-year cost topping out at $159,999 per person, double, and $255,999 per person, single.

Ship Sails Maiden Voyage After Months of Delay

Villa Vie Residences, based in Fort Lauderdale, invested in a renovation of Villa Vie Odyssey after its purchase in 2023, the same year that the world cruise company introduced itself to the industry.

It billed itself as offering a “Perpetual, Circumnavigating the World Every 3.5 Years” voyage. The residential ship is slated to call at 420 ports across the globe on each voyage.

The renovation at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland, revealed several mechanical issues with the 32-year-old vessel.

Among the problems were faulty grey water tanks, which hold used water from the kitchen, showers, laundry facilities, and other sources. After that was corrected, a major operational issue with the ship’s rudder stock was found. Rudders enable ships to turn, so the problem further postponed the ship’s launch.

Meanwhile, dozens of guests who had bought cabins on Villa Vie Odyssey were waiting to embark the ship in Belfast. Two of those guests chronicled their long wait on their YouTube channel called Midlife Cruising.

The ship finally sailed from Belfast on October 3, 2024. Villa Vie Odyssey will hold inaugural events at Catalina Island, off Los Angeles, on June 18, 2025.

What Happens If There Is an Emergency at Home During Your Cruise?

It can be nerve-wracking for some travelers to set sail, knowing there could be issues at home that might require immediate attention.

Being onboard a cruise ship does not mean you are completely cut off, however, and in the event of an emergency there are special ways you can be reached.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald frequently gets asked about how non-travelers could reach out to someone onboard a ship in case of an emergency. There is a dedicated toll-free number that can be used to reach individuals on any cruise ship in the Carnival fleet.

“I do get asked a lot if there is an emergency telephone number for family and friends to call from home,” Heald noted. “Indeed, there is.”

Carnival Cruise Line’s emergency onboard contact number is 1-800-227-6482

The number is available every day from 7 a.m. to midnight. When it is used, a Carnival Cruise Line employee at the company’s Miami headquarters will answer and will immediately pass the message along to the appropriate ship.

Heald explains that the Guest Services team onboard will then contact the cruise passenger. If there is indeed a true emergency that requires further communication, that connection will be provided without any charge or fee to help the guest resolve the situation as much as possible.

The Guest Services team onboard will also frequently follow up with the guest to be sure their needs are met, or even just to check in and be sure they are still able to enjoy their cruise vacation.

Heald goes on to note that the number should only be used for “true family emergencies” though he does not define exactly what that might be.

“I should remind you that this is again kindly for true family emergencies only,” he stressed. “I sincerely hope that you will never need it.”

Multiple guests who have unfortunately had the need of such emergency communication chimed in on Heald’s popular Facebook page to share their experiences.

“I received a call on the Dream about 7 years ago when my daughter and family lost their home to an electrical fire,” one guest described. “I must say the Carnival staff were absolutely so compassionate and I was able to receive updates and speak with family members until we returned to port. Carnival truly cares for their guests.”

“My mom was cruising when she got the news that her brother died,” another guest shared. “The staff was very helpful in getting plane tickets, packing her stuff and making arrangements to get to the airport. We are forever thankful for all their help.”

Other travelers have had the emergency contact number used in critical situations, such as when a loved one was admitted to the hospital or a home alarm service was being alerted.

When Should the Emergency Number Be Used?

It is important to note that not every situation is a true emergency, and every traveler will have to assess what types of incidents would require being contacted while on a cruise vacation.

Furthermore, every traveler has their own preferences for whether or not to be contacted. Some cruise guests may prefer to be given sad details once they return home and are in a better position to help with any necessary arrangements or grieve in private, rather than while on a cruise ship.

Many travelers leave the emergency number with family members, friends, or neighbors just in case it has to be used. It is important to explain to them what the number should be used for, however, and when it may not be appropriate to call.

Carnival Cruise Line also offers various Wi-Fi internet packages for travelers to stay in touch with family members and friends at home just for fun or for any non-emergency situations.

International calling, internet access in ports of call, and social media access are other great ways to keep in touch and stay updated with everyone on land and sea.

Royal Caribbean Says ‘2024 Was Exceptional,’ 2025 Off to Strong Start

After a year that saw the debut of the world’s biggest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean Group is celebrating a banger of a year.

The cruise operator, which owns Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises and has a joint venture with TUI Group’ TUI Cruises, shared the big news during its annual earnings report.

“2024 was exceptional,” said Royal Caribbean Group’s President and CEO Jason Liberty.

He credited the winning year to the company’s “flawless execution, which drove elevated demand across our leading brands, the early achievement of our Trifecta goals, and meaningful progress on our strategic priorities.”

Financial indicators revealed the company brought in $16.5 billion in total revenue in 2024 – an increase of $2.6 billion over 2023.

One of the main drivers for the successful year was the launch of several new and innovative ships, including Royal Caribbean’s first Icon Class ship, the 250,800-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, able to accommodate a maximum of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members.

The first LNG-fueled cruise ship in the fleet, Icon of the Seas launched in January 2024, providing groundbreaking amenities like the oceanfront glass-domed AquaDome, Thrill Island’s high-speed slides and zip lines, and the tranquil Chill Island, featuring the largest freshwater pool at sea.

But the cruise line didn’t stop there. In July 2024, it also introduced Utopia of the Seas, the sixth Oasis Class vessel purposely built to take 5,668 passengers on short, fun 3- and 4-night getaways from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and the company’s private destination, Perfect Day at Coco Cay.

Celebrity Cruises also introduced its fourth Edge Class vessel in late 2023, the 140,600-gross-ton Celebrity Ascent, providing 3,260 passengers a new option for Caribbean voyages from Fort Lauderdale in 2024.

In May 2024, Silversea took delivery of its second Nova Class ship, Silver Ray, to provide its 728 guests with a luxury liner for voyages in Alaska, Asia, and Australia.

Even TUI Cruises grew its fleet by adding Mein Schiff 7 in the summer of 2024.

For Royal Caribbean Group, this resulted in an 8 percent increase in Gross Margin Yields and an 11.6 percent rise in Net Yields.

Riding a Wave of Bookings

Following a year of fleet expansions, Royal Caribbean finished 2024 with some of its strongest bookings to date, including five of the biggest booking weeks in the company’s history.

The anticipation is so great that the operator is now riding a wave of record bookings, with January’s crucial Wave season booking period kicking off the year with unprecedented demand.

The momentum Royal Caribbean Group is riding will certainly continue as TUI Cruises begins sailing its new InTUItion Class Mein Schiff Relax in March; Royal Caribbean delivers a twin Icon Class ship, the 250,800-gross-ton Star of the Seas, in August; and Celebrity Cruises debuts its 3,260-passenger Celebrity Xcel in November 2025.

During its earnings update, the cruise operator also revealed that it will enter the river cruise market through Celebrity Cruises, ordering 10 new vessels to navigate rivers by 2027.

“We are the best in the world at delivering the vacation of a lifetime, and this is the latest example of how we are building the capabilities to deliver a lifetime of vacations,” said Liberty.

Royal Caribbean Group’s shipbuilding lineup also continues, with a seventh Oasis Class ship scheduled to arrive in 2028 and TUI Cruises introducing its second InTUItion Class vessel, Mein Schiff Flow, in 2026.

The company anticipates 23 percent adjusted earnings growth in 2025.
