Cruisers Could Face New $45 Fee Without REAL ID

Key Aspects:

  • US citizens are required to present REAL IDs in order to board domestic flights, which includes cruisers traveling to and from ports.
  • Starting in February 2026, travelers who don’t have REAL IDs may need to pay $45 before going through a TSA checkpoint.
  • Even then, there is a possibility for delays or not being cleared by TSA agents at all.

Every cruise guest knows that it’s important to verify and bring the correct documentation to their cruise ports, or else they could be denied boarding.

However, US citizens who will be flying to their next departure port now need to make extra sure they have another form of identification: Their REAL IDs.

If you missed the memo, the REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or ID card that doubles as a federally accepted form of identification that complies with stricter security standards.

In most US states, these cards are identifiable by a white star in a yellow circle.

REAL IDs have been required for domestic flights since May 7, 2025, but TSA agents will be enforcing this with a financial penalty starting next year.

As of February 1, 2026, guests who are flying without a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification will be required to pay a $45 fee online.

The fee was originally proposed at $18, but the final amount is more than double this rate.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 94% of people already use REAL IDs or other approved forms of identification, but the remaining 6% still equates to hundreds of thousands of vacationers.

“Beginning February 1, travelers who do not present an acceptable form of ID at our security checkpoints and still want to fly can pay a $45 fee and undergo the TSA Confirm.ID process,” said Adam Stahl, Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator for TSA.

“This fee ensures the cost to cover verification of an insufficient ID will come from the traveler, not the taxpayer,” Stahl added.

How the Process Works

Starting in February, those traveling without REAL IDs or other suitable identification must pay the $45 to the TSA online prior to traveling.

Every transaction is good for a 10-day travel period before non-REAL ID users have to pay the fee again.

While it’s possible to complete the process from the airport, it’s highly recommended that the fee is paid in advance.

The process can take upwards of 30 minutes – and that’s assuming there are no glitches.

After paying the fee, travelers will need to present an email confirmation to the TSA agent before being allowed to pass through the security checkpoint.

But even then, it’s possible that TSA agents could still refuse to let these travelers pass through the security checkpoint if they can’t verify their identities for any reason.

As another unfortunate side effect, this extra step could make lines even longer at airports servicing busy cruise ports like PortMiami and Port Canaveral.

“The security of the traveling public is our top priority, so we urge all travelers to get a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID as soon as possible to avoid delays and potentially miss flights,” Stahl continued.

This is another reason to support why we always recommend flying to your cruise port at least one day early, as the ship will not wait for you if your original travel plans are delayed or cancelled for a reason like this.

Passports as an Alternative

On the bright side, the TSA accepts passports as an alternative form of identification, which is also the preferred form of identification for the major cruise lines.

With the exception of closed-loop and domestic cruises, passports are almost always required to set sail.

That said, it’s always smart to confirm what documentation is needed for your specific voyage with your cruise line before leaving home and with enough time to obtain documents that you might not have.

US citizens who travel with a passport but do not have a REAL ID are able to pass through TSA checkpoints without paying the $45 fee.

Other additional forms of identification that have been approved by the TSA include US passport cards, DHS trusted traveler cards, permanent resident cards, Veteran Health Identification Cards, and foreign government-issued passports.

A complete list of acceptable forms of ID can always be found on the TSA website.

Carnival Cruise Line Adjusts Vacation Protection Plan Coverage

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Cruise Line has switched to a new insurance carrier.
  • This means that two key benefits of Carnival’s Vacation Protection Plan have changed.
  • The revised policies went into effect for all sailings that embark on or after December 1, 2025.

Carnival Cruise Line will continue to offer its popular Vacation Protection Plan, but going forward, coverage will look a little bit different.

The family-friendly cruise line has switched to a new insurance provider, which has led to two notable modifications to the plan. These changes went into effect on December 1, 2025.

“We are writing to let you know we are changing the travel protection insurance carrier to United States Fire Insurance Company, effective with sailings/departures commencing as of December 1, 2025,” Carnival wrote to guests who have already purchased the insurance.

First, the Medical Evacuation Benefit of $30,000 and Repatriation of Remains Benefit of $30,000 is being combined into a single benefit of $50,000.

While this sounds like a $10,000 decrease in coverage, the wording implies that guests will now have $50,000 available to them in coverage to use for either of these purposes.

“It’s not actually less. You now have $50,000 available for either. If you are using $$ for the Medical Evacuation Benefit then you do not need money for Repatriation of Remains (moving a dead body),” an insurance agent and Carnival cruiser noted.

Next, the Accident Medical Expense Benefit of $10,000 and the Sickness Medical Expense Benefit of $10,000 were combined into one single Accident and Sickness Medical Expense Benefit of $20,000.

Worth Reading: Carnival Urges Overlooked Purchase, Cannot Help Guest Pleas

The cost of Carnival’s Vacation Protection is not changing for anyone who has already purchased the plan.

“Your plan cost remains the same,” the cruise line confirmed in its letter.

Currently, this offering starts at $49 for new purchasers and varies based on factors like sailing length and total cruise fare.

Additional benefits like refunds for trip cancellation or interruption and up to $1,500 in reimbursement for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage (+ up to $500 to buy necessities when bags are delayed) are not changing.

Is This a Corporate-Wide Change?

Princess Cruises, which is also owned by Carnival Corporation, has also recently announced changes for its insurance programs that will go into effect on December 9, 2025.

Notably, the Standard Princess Vacation Protection Plan (PVP) will be phased out, meaning the only option will be the more comprehensive (and more expensive) Platinum PVP.

However, those who have already purchased or will purchase the Standard PVP before December 9 will keep their exact plan with no changes.

But now that two Carnival-owned cruise lines have changed their insurance offerings, it seems plausible that more sister brands might announce their own insurance changes soon.

Carnival also owns major cruise lines like Holland America Line, Cunard Line, Seabourn Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises, and AIDA Cruises.

Guests React to the Change

Among Carnival guests who received notice of the change, the reaction has been mostly one of confusion and frustration.

For some, this fueled the fire that was already started by the controversial new loyalty program that is launching on September 1, 2026.

“We got it, and got the “notice” today. Just one more way Carnival is giving less. That on top of status changes,” one cruiser reacted to the news.

“Both of those things are relatively small, but the vibe is ‘we’re getting real chintzy’. Our vibe is will probably be exploring other companies,” they continued.

That said, guests who don’t like the cost or coverage are welcome to protect their vacations by going through independent insurance carriers.

Especially avid cruisers will sometimes also invest in year-round travel insurance, which can sometimes be cheaper than buying new policies for every vacation individually.

And if you don’t want travel insurance at all, this is not something that is required to sail.

Carnival Cruise Line Service Fees Quietly Climb Higher

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Cruise Line’s standard service charge is being raised from 18% to 20%.
  • This applies to drink packages, specialty dining, in-stateroom gifts, and other purchases.
  • At this time, crew gratuities are not increased, but additional price changes may be coming.

Carnival Cruise Line is quietly raising a fee that the vast majority of its cruise guests pay. No, it isn’t the crew member gratuities, but it does apply to all purchased drinks, drink packages, and specialty dining.

The fee is the familiar 18% “service charge” added to many purchases. Now, that fee has been raised to 20% on applicable purchases.

The increased fee applies to a wide range of items and packages, including:

  • Drink packages, including Cheers!, Bottomless Bubbles, and the new Cheers! Zero Proof package
  • Individual drinks purchased a-la-carte onboard
  • Specialty dining charges
  • In-stateroom gift decorations for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
  • Gifts purchased for guests’ staterooms, such as toys, flowers, and tote bags
Old Service Charge Rate

Carnival has not made any official announcement about the fee increase, but it is widely posted on the cruise line’s website when guests check purchase prices or the terms and conditions of different offerings.

New Service Charge Rate
New Service Charge Rate

Is This Such a Big Increase?

It may not seem like a 2% increase is particularly significant, but it can actually be a hefty change depending on each guest’s preferred purchases.

For example, let’s say a family of four with two adults and two teens plans a 7-night sailing to celebrate a birthday. Both adults purchase the Cheers! drink package, while both teens get the Bottomless Bubbles package.

So far, the fees at 18% would be as follows:

  • Cheers! package pre-booked online at $139.90 per day for the adults, a total of $979.30. The 18% charge would be an additional $176.27.
  • Bottomless Bubbles pre-booked online for two teens at $13.90 per day, a total of $97.30 for the week-long cruise. The 18% extra fee is another $17.51.
  • Birthday stateroom decor to celebrate their special occasion at $52.75, plus the additional 18% of $9.49.
  • A special birthday dinner for the whole family at the steakhouse, at $52 each for a total of $208, as the adult price applies to all children over age 11. The extra 18% fee would add $37.44.

All told, the 18% fee for the drink packages, birthday decor, and family dinner at the steakhouse adds $240.71 to the total.

Now, the increase to 20% means each fee is higher and the total of all the same service charges is $267.47.

While the overall increase of $26.76 may not break the bank, bear in mind this fee also applies to any other specialty dining, extra drink purchases, and more.

Will More Fee Increases Follow?

It is also possible that this service fee increase is just the start of an overall increase in additional charges. Carnival Cruise Line has not increased gratuities since April 2023, and it is common for those charges to be increased every 2-3 years.

The base prices for specialty dining, bottled water, internet access, drink packages, Faster to the Fun, and other add-ons could also be set to increase in the coming weeks.

Even at just a dollar or two per item, these fees can quickly add up to significantly higher costs for any cruise guests mindful of their travel budget.

This comes at a time when the Carnival Rewards program has generated great controversy about nickel-and-diming and Carnival Cruise Line valuing spending more than loyalty and the guest experience.

Of course, inflation and price changes are nothing new, and undoubtedly, more items will increase in price over time. Nor are such increases confined to Carnival Cruise Line.

It’s just a question of when and how much, and whether cruise guests respond to the increases with changes in their onboard spending.

Virgin Voyages Invites Guests on 30-Day Journey to Alaska, Kid-Free

Key Aspects:

  • Virgin Voyages rolled out a 30-day season pass to Alaska in summer 2026.
  • The pass is valid for cruises aboard the line’s newest ship, Brilliant Lady.
  • Four departure windows are offered between May and September.

Virgin Voyages is tempting guests with yet another season pass, this time to Alaska, with its monthlong “Ultimate Kid-Free Escape” cruise offered for summer 2026.

Seizing on the growing trend of adult-only travel, the pioneering cruise line founded by British mogul Sir Richard Branson rolled out the new season pass designed for cruisers looking to immerse themselves in Alaska for a full 30 days, and without children running underfoot.

The 30-day pass is offered on Brilliant Lady, the line’s newest ship that debuted in September 2025, and starts at $26,000 for two guests.

The experience is described not as a cruise but rather as a residency at sea, filled with glacier and wildlife viewing, whale-watching, and exploring Alaska’s many other pristine natural resources.

Alaska is one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth. Experiencing it aboard Brilliant Lady means you get the adventure without sacrificing comfort, style or that Virgin sense of discovery — and without a single child on board,” said Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages

What’s Included and What’s The Cost?

Virgin Voyages’ Alaska Summer Season Pass offers several valuable perks. First, cruise fares are based on two guests sharing one Central Sea Terrace cabin.

They receive drink credits each day and up to $250 each in shore excursions. A “Dedicated Glacier Discovery Excursion” is included as well, along with entry to the ship’s thermal spa.

For those who’d like to, or who must, work remotely while onboard, the season pass comes with an upgraded Work From Sea WiFi package. The pass covers free laundry service for the whole 30 days, and includes priority boarding and exclusive welcome receptions with the ship’s crew.

And there’s more. Each guest booking the pass receives a complimentary package of products designed to enhance their Alaska experience. Items include a Canon G7X camera, binoculars, a backpack and jacket, and a water bottle.

Four 30-day options are offered, and prices depend on departure windows. For departures between May 28 and June 23, the rate for two guests is $26,000; between June 23 and July 23, it’s $38,000; from July 30 to August 27, $35,000; and from August 27 to September 26, $36,000.

The downside is that all cruises are roundtrip from Seattle, so booking consecutive voyages for 30 days means that those with the season pass will return to the homeport as each cruise ends and non-pass guests disembark, and as others embark for the ship’s next journey.

Most of Brilliant Lady’s sailings in Alaska are 7-day voyages, calling at popular ports such as Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, and other destinations.

Alaska Pass Follows Earlier, Similar Promotions

Virgin Voyages has unveiled other season passes in previous years and even has an annual pass.

The line’s annual pass for 2026 is an enhanced version of what it offered in 2025 and features a land stay at Branson’s famous Necker Island, in the Caribbean. Under the annual pass, guests pay one fee and can sail as often as they wish during a 12-month timeframe.

It isn’t cheap: the 2026 pass, which can be purchased through March 2026, costs $199,000 per person.

Other, shorter passes that have been offered by the line include the 2024 season pass in Europe. That one, the Scarlet Summer Season Pass, was featured on Scarlet Lady and was promoted to guests who can work remotely.

The pass provided monthlong cruises — same as the new Alaska pass, but sailed to popular Mediterranean destinations such as Cannes, France; Rome and Ajaccio (Corsica), Italy; and Palma de Mallorca, Spain. That package was priced at $9,990 per person.

Philadelphia Cruise Terminal Breaks Ground, Norwegian Jewel to Sail in 2026

0

Key Aspects:

  • Philadelphia has officially broken ground on a new 16-acre cruise terminal, set to open in April 2026.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has a seven-year deal to make Philadelphia its exclusive homeport, committing to 41 sailings per year.
  • Port officials project the terminal will generate $300 million annually for Pennsylvania’s economy.

Cruise lovers in the Mid-Atlantic will soon have a new cruise port to enjoy as PhilaPort has officially broken ground on its future cruise terminal.

The 16-acre facility, adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport, is slated to open in April 2026, giving Philadelphia a dedicated homeport just ahead of its hosting large-scale celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The terminal groundbreaking is the latest step in a partnership between PhilaPort, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Energy Transfer Marketing and Terminals, and began after the sale of the former Hog Island Dock property was complete.

During the December 1, 2025, groundbreaking ceremony, Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort executive director and CEO praised Norwegian Cruise Line and Energy Transfer.

“It took a lot of hard work to bring this agreement together,” he said. “Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line were committed every step of the way.”

He added that there is a lot of hard work ahead, “but we are ready and excited to welcome cruise passengers this spring.”

Under a seven-year berthing agreement running through March 2033, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ three brands – Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises – will operate as Philadelphia’s exclusive homeport operator with an initial commitment of 41 sailings per year.

Officials estimate the terminal will support 2,185 jobs and generate about $300 million a year for Pennsylvania’s economy.

The groundbreaking comes just as Philadelphia prepares to serve as a focal point for America’s 250th anniversary, which is expected to draw an influx of visitors. Port officials say the timing couldn’t be better to showcase visibility for the port as a homeport option for the Mid-Atlantic.

“Philadelphia’s debut as our newest homeport marks a strategic milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings,” said Daniel Farkas, executive vice president, general counsel and chief development officer at the cruise company.

“As we prepare to launch in 2026, this terminal represents the next wave in our commitment to innovation, regional growth, and delivering an unmatched guest experience from ship to shore,” he added.

PhilaPort will oversee the waterfront work, while Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings will build and design the passenger terminal on land.

The new terminal is part of PhilaPort’s broader “Destination 2040” plan to expand the port’s infrastructure, increase berths, upgrade terminals, and shift the port from cargo to passenger operations.

Norwegian Gains New Cruise Homeport

Norwegian Cruise Line announced that it was making Philadelphia a new homeport in 2024, restoring the city’s direct cruise access for the first time in years.

The cruise line’s 93,502-gross-ton Norwegian Jewel will operate from the new port beginning April 16, 2026, and extending through October 17, 2026.

During the summer of 2026, the 2,368-guest Norwegian Jewel will run 7- to 9-day cruises to Bermuda with overnight calls at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

As the season progresses, the ship will shift to longer excursions of 10- and 11-day sailings to Canada and New England, alternating homeports between Philadelphia and Quebec City beginning in September 2026.

Ports for those sailings will include a mix of smaller and major stops such as Halifax, Nova Scotia; Bar Harbor, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Boston.

At this time, Regent Seven Seas and Oceania Cruises have not announced a Philadelphia-led lineup.

No other major cruise line is scheduled to homeport in the city in 2026, making Norwegian Cruise Line the only operator bringing passengers from Philadelphia to Bermuda and New England.

Other cruise lines are set to add Philadelphia to their lineup in 2026 for the historic 250th Semiquincentennial. Princess Cruises, for example, features the City of Brotherly Love on its land tours program, “Historic America Cruisetour.”

PortMiami Cruise Passenger Numbers Hit Unprecedented Levels

0

Key Aspects:

If it felt busy at PortMiami this past year, the numbers show it wasn’t just perception. The port enjoyed a record-setting cruise season in 2025.

PortMiami officially closed Fiscal Year 2025 with its highest-ever passenger count: 8,564,225 cruise passengers passed through Miami between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025.

This total is a 4.02 percent increase over 2024’s 8,233,056 passengers and the largest total since the port first welcomed cruise guests in 1968.

The surge simply confirms what cruisers already know – Miami sits at the center of the North American cruise scene.

But officials say the milestone didn’t happen by chance. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava framed the port’s results as a sign of continued momentum, especially as Miami positions itself ahead of future growth.

“PortMiami’s dual achievements [cargo traffic also boomed in 2025] highlight its dynamic role as both a cruise and cargo powerhouse,” she said.

PortMiami Director and CEO Hydi Webb echoed the sentiments and said the record performance “reflects the dedication of our entire team and the strength of our partnerships with the cruise industry, cargo carriers, and the business community.”

The record arrives just as another busy season begins. Multiple cruise lines are homeporting new and returning vessels at Port Miami through spring 2026, as a launching point for winter Caribbean sailings.

Officials link the deployments to Miami’s role in regional employment and tourism spending, with the port contributing an estimated $61 billion annually to the local economy. The port also supports more than 340,000 jobs tied to cruising, port services, transportation, and hospitality.

A Sea of New Ships

PortMiami’s new passenger record sets the stage for a jam-packed 2025-2026 cruise seasons, including a number of ships calling Miami home for the first time ever.

The rollout began in October with Cunard’s 2,175-passenger Queen Elizabeth and Virgin Voyages’ new 2,700-guest Brilliant Lady, which first debuted in New York on September 5, both departing on maiden voyages from the port on October 16, 2025.

November followed with Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam, holding 1,964 passengers, and Oceania Cruises’ Allura, with 1,200 guests, setting sail. PortMiami also celebrated the arrival of Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, Celebrity Xcel, for a November 14 preview before it moved to its Port Everglades home.

On December 5, MSC Cruises’ Grandiosa will arrive from Italy before it heads to Port Canaveral. It will return to Miami in April 2026 before returning to the Mediterranean.

In January 2026, Windstar Cruises will introduce its new yacht, Star Seeker, bringing a smaller ship to the port dominated by megaships.

Holland America Line returns in February with Eurodam calling PortMiami home for the first time in years, and Silversea Cruises bringing back Silver Nova in May, giving passengers an ultra-luxury choice heading into the summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line will also debut its newest vessel, Norwegian Luna, on April 1, 2026, with early celebrations and preview sailings possible in March.

Carnival Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Explora Journeys, Royal Caribbean and other major cruise lines also have ships homeported in Miami this season and will contribute to growing passenger counts in Miami.

New Traffic Alert as Texas Port Enters Busy Holiday Season

0

Key Aspects:

  • Road construction around the Port of Galveston will alter traffic patterns for passengers arriving by vehicle.
  • Cruise Terminals 25 and 28 will be impacted through December 25, 2025.
  • The terminals are used by four Carnival Cruise Line ships.

The Port of Galveston issued an important traffic pattern alert to cruise guests planning to sail from the port between December 5 and December 25, 2025.

It is the second time in less than two months that vehicle traffic entering and exiting the port has been impacted by ongoing road construction in the area.

In a social media post and on its website, the Port of Galveston informed travelers that traffic routes are being altered for those headed for Terminal 25 and Terminal 28.

Carnival Cruise Line ships sail from Terminal 25, and all guests arriving in vehicles must enter the port on 23rd Street and exit on 33rd Street. Those bound for Terminal 28, which serves Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises, must enter and exit on 33rd Street.

Port officials also urge all passengers to park in Port of Galveston cruise parking lots and use the port’s shuttle system to bring their luggage to the embarkation terminals. Also, pedestrians arriving from downtown areas should enter and exit the terminal complex at 25th Street.

The latest instructions for accessing Terminals 25 and 28 differ slightly from those issued in October 2025. At that time, road construction forced all guests headed to Terminal 25 to enter and exit at 23rd Street. Access to Terminal 28 remains the same — entering and exiting at 33rd Street.

Port of Galveston Traffic Route
Port of Galveston Traffic Route

The Port of Galveston, in recent years, has been upgrading its internal roadways in an effort to divert some traffic away from the city’s busy Harborside Drive. In fact, Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees noted in his end-of-year statement on December 1, 2025, that the port is nearing completion of upgrades to its internal roadway.

The latest traffic alert is valid until December 25, 2025, at which point it appears possible that the roadway work will be finished.

The port, also known as Galveston Wharves, is the fourth-busiest in North America based on cruise arrivals, behind Port Miami, Port Canaveral, and Port Everglades. With roughly 400 ship departures and more than 3 million passenger transits, the port continues to grow each year.

December a Busy Month For Galveston’s Cruise Terminals

Virtually every major cruise line has a presence at Galveston. Carnival Cruise Line has four ships sailing from the port —  Carnival JubileeCarnival BreezeCarnival Dream, and Carnival Legend.

In fact, the port made significant changes to Terminal 25, to the tune of $53 million, in order to accommodate the mega-ship Carnival Jubilee, when the 183,521-gross-ton ship debuted in late 2023.

Galveston is a busy port in December, as cruisers take advantage of warm weather vacations to the Caribbean and many book popular holiday sailings.

On December 13, 2025, for example, two Carnival ships, the 5,228-guest Carnival Jubilee and the 3,646-guest Carnival Dream, both depart on Western Caribbean voyages — that’s nearly 9,000 passengers between just those two vessels.

The Port of Galveston has several parking lots available to cruise guests, including the Express Lot, specifically for Terminals 25 and 28. It has 680 spaces and is a short walk to the terminals.

Also, for those terminals, passengers can utilize Economy Lots A and B, both with shuttle service, and the SMP Garage, which is within walking distance.

Other major developments at the port include the opening of Terminal 16 in November 2025. That facility is home to an MSC Cruises ship, MSC Seascape, and will also be used by Norwegian Cruise Line.

Royal Caribbean, which has two ships currently sailing from Galveston, Mariner of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas, uses Terminal 10.

Parents Clash With Carnival Over Teens Barred From Comedy Shows

Key Aspects:

  • A recent Carnival guest is mad that their teens were removed from the adults-only comedy.
  • John Heald responded that this is the rule and guests are asked to follow the guideline.
  • Other guests noted the comedians’ comfort and lack of seating as more reasons for the restriction.

Carnival Cruise Line seems to be cracking down a bit on the adults-only entertainment restrictions, but not all guests are happy with the enforcement. One guest, in fact, believes that a parent’s judgment should absolutely take precedence over the guidelines the cruise line has set forth.

The unhappy guest reached out to John Heald, Carnival’s brand ambassador, with their complaint.

“My older teens were stopped from seeing the comedy show. There is a difference between a R-rated movie with violence and R-rated Carnival comedians,” the guest contends. “My 14- and 15-year-old can handle R-rated comedians. I am the parent, it is my choice, my responsibility.”

At what age a teen is “older” is certainly debatable, but Carnival Cruise Line’s adults-only, R-rated comedy is restricted to guests 18 years and older. While different parents will have different thoughts on their own child’s maturity, 14- or 15-year-olds are not exactly “older” teens.

“To have them removed tonight from the R-rated show … was demeaning for them and disrespectful to me,” the guest continued. “Parents should have the choice not Carnival.”

Worth Reading: Heckling Guest Removed From Carnival’s Punchliner Comedy Club

The guest does not provide any context for how being removed from the show was “demeaning” or “disrespectful.” They also did not clarify when the teens were removed, whether it was before the show began or after the comedian started their performance.

Many times, the comedy club manager or another crew member will be at the entrance to the Punchliner Comedy Club after the doors open, ensuring that all guests who enter the venue are of the appropriate age. It can be easy to slip by, however, particularly in a crowd or if more than one entrance is available.

Heald did respond to the guest’s complaint, but not perhaps in the way they had wished.

“I was going to talk about the differences between movies and real life comedy and how having children in the audience makes it so uncomfortable for the comedians performing adult material,” he explained. “However, I will say instead this time that these are our rules and like them or not, please do accept them.”

Read Also: What Are the Best Cruise Lines for Families?

It’s refreshing that Carnival Cruise Line is not adapting for parents’ discretion in these matters, particularly at a time when many cruise guests seem to be noting more and more unruly teens onboard.

Furthermore, to permit some teens in the adults-only comedy shows would be a slippery slope indeed. What about the “more mature” 13-year-old? Or the 12-year-old who is “so smart” and “deserves” to be there?

This would even open up exceptions to other adults-only areas, such as the Serenity Deck or other events that are restricted to those 18 (or 21) and older.

Guest Reactions Not Supportive

If the original poster was hoping to get support from other guests, they have been sorely disappointed. More than 900 comments on the post show that very few other Carnival guests agree with permitting 14- and 15-year-olds into the adults-only comedy shows.

“We just cruised a couple weeks ago with our teenage sons, newly turned 16 and a month shy of 18. Can my kids handle adult content? Oh sure. Did we put up a stink they couldn’t attend the later comedy shows? Nope!” another recent guest described. “We found other things to do and had a blast. People are so wildly entitled it’s mad.”

Other guests poked a bit of fun in their assessment of the comedy material and how age-appropriate it may or may not be.

“I am 56 and felt like I wasn’t old enough for some of the comedy shows. Or maybe I am too old,” one guest quipped.

“That’s like me complaining that they won’t let my 55-year-old self play in the kids club,” another noted.

Other Reasons Not to Permit Kids in R-Rated Comedy

It isn’t just for the R-rating that some guests note children are not permitted in the adults-only comedy shows.

These shows are outrageously popular, and many of the Punchliner venues are smaller and more intimate, which adds to the personalized vibe of the show.

Permitting children and teens into the show then fills seating that adults could otherwise have used, taking away an onboard experience specifically intended for adults.

Carnival Cruise Line does offer multiple PG-rated, family-friendly comedy shows on every cruise, often from the same comedians who offer the more mature shows. Regardless of age, all guests can enjoy the fun, so long as they do so as part of the appropriate show.

Port Canaveral Tops 8.6M Cruise Passengers, Overtakes Miami as World’s Busiest

Key Aspects:

  • Port Canaveral saw more than 8.6 million passenger movements in fiscal year 2025.
  • This earns the central Florida homeport the title of the world’s busiest cruise port.
  • Port Canaveral is investing $912 million in growth and improvements to support cruises.

It’s busier and better than ever at Port Canaveral as the final numbers are in for fiscal year 2025 and it’s official: the central Florida homeport has taken over from its south Florida rival as the world’s busiest cruise port.

With more than 8.6 million passenger movements through the port in 2025, Port Canaveral has truly reached new heights with the highest ever number of passengers in the port’s history. This edges past PortMiami’s 8.5 million guests.

“Earning this distinction is a direct reflection of our ongoing commitment and focused efforts to be the best port possible, providing a high-quality experience for all cruise guests sailing from our Port,” said Port Canaveral CEO Captain John Murray.

“With thanks to our hard-working teams and the confidence we’ve earned from the cruise lines, this milestone underscores our commitment to supporting our cruise partners’ business growth.”

Port Canaveral is currently homeporting 18 ships across 7 cruise lines, with more than 1,000 sailings scheduled annually.

This includes some of the newest ships and largest ships in various fleets, including Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas and Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Treasure, both of which offer 7-night sailings from Port Canaveral.

The 2025 numbers are a significant 13% increase from 2024’s totals, when Port Canaveral welcomed 7.6 million passengers and 911 cruise ships. In comparison, PortMiami grew only by 4.02% from 2024 to 2025.

Port Growing with Demand

Instead of waiting for facilities to become outdated and overcrowded, Port Canaveral has been shrewdly investing in updates, new facilities, added parking, and much more.

The Port Canaveral Advantage is a $912 million plan for five years’ worth of development. This will include expansions on two existing terminals, a completely new seventh cruise terminal campus, and the latest in technology to ensure smooth processing for both embarking and debarking guests.

The port also offers the capability to refuel with liquefied natural gas (LNG), giving cruise lines the opportunity for greener options that are in high demand to protect maritime environments.

These improvements will keep all guests sailing smoothly, no matter which ship or cruise line they enjoy most.

Sailing from Port Canaveral

In addition to Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, Port Canaveral is the homeport for ships from Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Guests sailing from the Space Coast can enjoy everything from short weekend sailings to epic Caribbean explorations of 10+ nights. Furthermore, the convenience of Port Canaveral lets guests arrange back-to-back or even side-to-side sailings with ease.

From private island destinations in the Bahamas to popular Caribbean highlights such as Jamaica, Cozumel, Grand Turk, San Juan and the Dominican Republic to the Virgin Islands (British and US!), ships from Port Canaveral are sailing there.

Even more extensive itineraries include the coveted Aruba-Bonaire-Curacao “ABC” sailings, highly sought after by eager guests, as well as Panama Canal voyages.

With so many ships homeported from Port Canaveral, guests also have options for even more elite sailings. This includes transatlantic cruises and repositioning sailings as different ships are shuffled to new deployments, including moving to Europe or Alaska at different times of year.

Port Canaveral’s convenience is especially popular with cruise travelers. While the homeport is just an hour east of Orlando for guests who fly to their cruise vacation, the port is also insanely popular with drive-in guests.

In fact, roughly 75% of the guests who sail from Port Canaveral drive to the terminals. Port Canaveral is just three hours from Miami, 7-8 hours from Atlanta, and 6.5 hours from Charleston.

The port’s clear signage, designated parking areas, and efficient, friendly staff make it easy to drive in without the same traffic snarls, one-way streets, and other challenges some homeports face.
