Carnival Cruise Line Releases Special Easter Menu

Food is a centerpiece of many holidays, whether it is a special treat that marks the occasion or a grand meal to share with family and friends.

In recent years, Carnival Cruise Line has developed special holiday menus not only for the massively popular Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, but for all types of special occasions their guests may be celebrating onboard.

On April 20, 2025, guests will be able to enjoy a very delicious Easter menu with outstanding seasonal options for all three courses – appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

“With Easter just around the corner I thought I would share the wonderful menu that the chef has prepared for the fleet,” John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, announced.

Guests can begin their festive feast with deviled eggs featuring mashed avocado and crispy bacon bits, or they may want to try the chicken, carrot, and ginger soup with fresh herbs.

The beet and petite greens salad with shallot vinaigrette or the classic Caesar salad provide other fresh appetizer options, or guests can enjoy seafood chowder, a short rib croquette, or classic shrimp cocktail.

For an entree, the featured Easter dinner is honey mustard-glazed ham with pineapple relish, served with sweet potato casserole with pecan streusel and green beans almondine in a raisin sauce. A caprese salad with seared ahi tuna or roasted lemon-pepper chicken are also available.

If guests prefer a classic entree instead, they can enjoy grilled jumbo shrimp with ranch potatoes, pecan-crusted salmon with creamy spring peas and parmesan potatoes, pasta primavera with roasted seasonal vegetables, or a cooked-to-order filet mignon with three cheese mashed redskin potatoes.

Travelers who prefer vegetarian or vegan entrees will be able to order the roasted red pepper, spinach, and feta filo tart with dill cream or the malai paneer with kadai vegetable and chickpea pulao.

Steakhouse Selections will also be available to order, but with the standard $23 per entree surcharge plus the 18% gratuity automatically added to the order.

To finish off the meal with a sweet treat, the featured Easter dessert is a spiced parfait with pumpkin puree in a buttercream nest. Guests can also enjoy a delicious moist carrot cake with chocolate cremeux, with the added bonus that this is a no added sugar selection.

Of course, the iconic Carnival warm chocolate melting cake is always available, as is a fresh tropical fruit plate, a selection of ice cream, and the savory cheese plate.

Heald also notes that another special meal will be available on Easter Sunday, but only for vessels without port visits on the holiday.

“There will also be a very special lunch menu served at the steakhouse for those ships who have Easter Sunday at sea,” he said. “You will be able to book that on board.”

No details for the steakhouse Easter lunch have been released, nor has it been stated whether or not that special meal will be for an extra charge.

Celebrating Easter Onboard Carnival Cruise Ships

In addition to delicious food, guests sailing with Carnival over the Easter holiday will be able to enjoy some special activities and extra fun to celebrate the occasion.

While the exact schedule of activities and what is available will vary on different ships, events such as the Family Easter Hop N’ Stop Hunt, a Family Easter Flower Hunt, and even Easter Egg-stravaganza Bingo will be offered.

A special Easter-themed trivia and holiday activities for younger cruisers onboard will also be held, and some seasonal decorations may be seen around the ships (though not nearly so extensive as the Christmas decorations).

For ships that are not homeported and therefore embarking or debarking guests on Easter Sunday, there will be a non-denominational Easter Service offered.

Guests should check the Carnival Hub app or their printed FunTimes newsletter for the exact schedule of Easter-themed activities and other fun during their cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line Cancels Sailing in Favor of a Charter

Full-ship charters can be lucrative opportunities for cruise lines, and that’s why decision-makers will sometimes choose to disappoint booked guests by cancelling a scheduled voyage in favor of a charter.

On March 20, 2025, Carnival Cruise Line became the latest brand to notify guests that their sailing — a 2026 voyage onboard Carnival Liberty, has been nixed in favor of a charter. It was the second time in less than a year that the ship’s schedule was interrupted for that reason.

The 3,000-guest Conquest-class ship that debuted in 2005 is homeported in New Orleans, sailing mostly 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises. In its notice to booked guests, the line noted that several alternatives are available to replace the April 26, 2026 departure.

We are very sorry to inform you that the ship has been chartered and your cruise has been cancelled,Colleen Oliverio, vice president of guest services-contact center for Carnival Cruise Line, wrote in a letter to guests.

“Our team is ready to discuss options and rebook you on another Carnival cruise right away,Oliverio added.

As an incentive to rebook, the notice confirms that each guest’s cruise rate is protected on a comparable sailing in similar accommodations, meaning that if a new voyage is booked in the same stateroom category and for the same duration, the original cruise fare applies.

Moreover, a $100 per stateroom onboard credit will be applied to the new sailing. The cruise line set a deadline of April 3, 2025 for booked guests to contact the line directly or the travel agent who handled the reservation.

The notice also advises that those who do not reschedule will automatically receive a full refund of their cruise fare and any pre-purchased services, such as shore excursions, drinks packages and the like.

The refund process can take up to three weeks to be completed, the line noted.

Guests Can Choose Another Voyage From the Big Easy

Since Carnival Liberty is based year-round in New Orleans through at least April 2027, guests are likely to find another itinerary that suits their vacation schedule. Seven-night Western Caribbean voyages typically call at Roatan Island’s Mahogany Bay, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel, Mexico.

Eastern Caribbean sailings visit Key West, Florida; Celebration Key, the new private island destination set to open in July 2025 in the Bahamas; and Nassau, Bahamas.

In addition to 7-night sailings, some 6-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruises are offered.

It is not unusual for full-ship charters to upend the plans of booked cruisers. It happens on virtually all of the major cruise lines from time to time, and the reason for the charter is rarely made known. They often are focused on specific themes, such as music, for instance.

The newly announced cancellation was not the first for Carnival Liberty. Guests booked on the ship’s October 19, 2025 cruise also received the bad news that the voyage was cancelled in favor of a charter.

In that case, the notice was sent out to booked guests in August of 2024, again providing sufficient time to find another alternative.

Other cruise lines swap out scheduled sailings for charters, too. A February 6, 2025 cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy was cancelled due to a charter. The 5-night itinerary was a Mexican Riviera cruise sailing roundtrip from Los Angeles. Guests learned of the cancellation in December 2023.

Cruise Passenger Cap in Maine Comes With Hefty Price Tag

The drama continues involving the cruise passenger cap in Bar Harbor, Maine, the town is now suing Golden Anchor, LC, for $4 million (USD) for extensive violations of the local ordinance.

This news comes just weeks after Golden Anchor, a subsidiary of Bar Harbor Resorts, which owns and operates the Harborside Hotel where cruise ship tenders dock, challenged the validity of the permitting regulations with an appeal to federal district court.

Now, new details have emerged that the town is suing the resort operator over code violations during the 2024 season. According to NEWS CENTER Maine, more than 98,000 cruise guests debarked on the property without the proper permits being filed from July through October.

“[Golden Anchor, LC] should have applied for the permit, and they didn’t,” said Val Peacock, the Bar Harbor Town Council Chair. “Our code enforcement officer was going down there and seeing the violation and issuing notices of violation.”

Allegedly, not only should Golden Anchor, LC have had the overall permit to operate a pier, but also a permit for each individual day guests were coming ashore.

The company, however, is disputing that new ordinance and change in permitting, arguing that precedents from previous permits and their operational history grandfather their operation.

The new permitting went into effect from November 8, 2022, when it was passed by a slim voting margin, and includes the cap of no more than 1,000 passengers per day. Violations are subject to a minimum $100 per person fine in excess of that passenger cap.

What you should know is that crew members, officers, ship pilots, and similar personnel are not counted toward the cap limits.

During the 2024 season, ships used the implicated piers on 83 days, though the first violation with a lack of proper permitting was recorded on July 25, with additional unauthorized use through October 27.

“In total, approximately 98,187 persons disembarked from cruise ships on, at, or over the property … without Golden Anchor having applied for or obtained a single Disembarkation Permit authorizing any number of persons to disembark,” the lawsuit details.

The lawsuit goes on to note that on six separate dates, the number of guests disembarking vastly exceeded the cap limit as well, which also factors in to the total fines and penalties levied against the property.

Ordinance Already Impacting Cruise Ship Visits

Despite the fact that the ongoing legal battles about the passenger cap have not yet been settled, the cruise industry is already taking note of the issue and adjusting their sailings accordingly.

Fewer ships are planning to visit Bar Harbor in 2025 than have made calls in recent years, though some schedules are still being finalized.

“We will see some cruise ship passengers this summer, and we’ll see cruise ships, but it’ll be much less than we have seen in the past,” Peacock said.

The cruise ship season in Bar Harbor generally begins in May, but it is the late summer and autumn sailings that draw the most interest due to the stunning natural beauty of the area, particularly in nearby Arcadia National Park.

While some local residents firmly support the cap on cruise ship passengers, not all local businesses agree. Instead, the loss of revenue and tourism interest could ultimately harm the town’s income and budget.

Many river cruise ships stop in the town in spring and early summer, but when it comes to the big cruise ships, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Getaway will be the first to pay a visit to Bar Harbor in 2025. The ship is scheduled to visit on August 20, and could bring as many as 3,963 travelers to the town in a single day.

Should these legal challenges grow even more heated, it is possible that itineraries may be revised to exclude Bar Harbor, with alternative ports offered in nearby Searsport or else Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island instead.

Are Cruising Ducks Only Meant for Kids?

You would think a good natured game of hiding and finding rubber ducks on a cruise ship wouldn’t cause so much controversy – but here we go again!

If you haven’t heard of this game yet, cruising ducks is the activity of hiding rubber ducks around a cruise ship for other guests to find. Whoever finds it usually has the option to keep it or re-hide it – although the guest who hid the duck in the first place may attach instructions.

Usually, the hiders will also put a tag on the duck to let cruisers know where the duck’s journey started – such as the sailing dates and the guests’ hometown.

Cruisers who choose to re-hide the duck can then add their own information. This can be extra fun when the duck has been hidden multiple times across different sailings.

One recent guest was thrilled when she found her first duck while sailing onboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas – until her sister-in-law stole her thunder by saying the game is only meant for kids.

“On a 7 day aboard Odyssey and having a good time. Found my first duck yesterday and was excited of course. My sister in law tried to chastise me (33) for collecting another one today saying ‘You know they hide those for kids.’ Am I wrong for hunting and collecting?,” the cruiser asked on Reddit.

While there are certainly some who see the game as childish, there is no age restriction to participate in the activity – which is unofficially run by guests and not the cruise line.

The only real requirement to play is to have a good attitude – and to keep the duck hunting onboard and not within the ports of call.

In my experience, more often than not, it’s the adults I’ve seen searching – and many of the ducks I’ve found were hidden way above the eye level of a child.

Worth Reading: Not Everyone is Happy About Cruising Ducks on Carnival

My husband and I personally have a duck collection in the double digits (and hopefully counting!) and they now proudly live on a shelf in our home.

Cruising Ducks are for Everyone

As the cruise fans sounded off in the comments, everyone made it clear that rubber duck hunting is for anyone who would like to participate.

“I hide ducks. I don’t mind if adults play. Many do, and it seems to bring happiness. That’s what it’s all about,” one cruiser said.

“I hide ducks for anyone who happens to find them, no matter the age. If it makes them smile, then mission accomplished,” another added.

In fact, the game is so popular now, that some hiders dedicate time buying and tagging dozens of ducks to hide during their next sailing – and Carnival Cruise Line even introduced a new mascot inspired by duck hiding.

Royal Caribbean Hiding Ducks
Royal Caribbean Hiding Ducks

Of course, this isn’t the first time – and it probably won’t be the last time – that this game causes controversy.

Cruise Hive Discussion Boards: Those Dark Ducks!

While a lot of the pushback comes from people who think that the duck hiding should come to a stop, there was a debate last year on if crew members should be allowed to participate among Carnival fans.

A cruise guest complained to Carnival Ambassador John Heald that the crew members were “stealing the hidden ducks” from paying passengers – which led to a poll on Heald’s public Facebook page.

At least the majority of cruisers saw nothing wrong with letting the crew members be part of the fun. Crew members work long hours and spend months away from their families, so the guests were happy if cruising ducks could brighten their days.

Many crew members who are away from their kids also like to bring the ducks home as souvenirs for the children waiting for them at home.

And to the people who don’t approve of the game, playing is not mandatory. If you don’t want to participate, don’t bring any ducks to hide and leave behind any that you find for a guest that is hoping to make that discovery.

Carnival Dispels Rumors of Egg Shortages Onboard

There are some foods out there that aren’t all that they are cracked up to be – but eggs are not one of them. Eggs are not only a favorite at breakfast, but are also a key ingredient in many recipes and desserts.

An egg shortage onboard Carnival’s cruise ships wouldn’t just impact breakfast items like scrambled eggs and omelettes, but could impact other dishes served onboard. But thankfully, this is not something that cruisers need to worry about.

As of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Brand Ambassador John Heald confirmed that rumors of egg options being removed were false.

“Apparently once again one of the many copy and paste and egg agerate cruise pages said yesterday that due to the egg shortage (hence me using the words egg agerate) that ‘Carnival has removed all egg options from their menus.’ This is of course utter nonsense,” Heald said in a pun-filled Facebook post.

“I know there is an egg shortage in parts of the United States but we still offer all the egg options we always have,” Heald continued.

Unfortunately for much of the US, a dangerous strain of avian influenza has been decimating flocks, killing 13.2 million hens in December 2024 alone, and has continued to wreak havoc throughout the first quarter of 2025.

This has resulted in egg shortages and increased prices in both grocery stores and restaurants – with chains like Denny’s and Waffle House temporarily adding a small surcharge to all meals that include eggs until things normalize.

But of course, Heald couldn’t conclude his post without making another joke: “We source all our eggs from a farm in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s called Old Macdonald’s Chicken Farm and the Beards have a brilliant relationship with Mac who is the EIEIO of the farm.”

In actuality, Carnival has a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States to source eggs using 100% cage-free chickens – which is a more ethical way of raising the hens.

Business as Usual Onboard

If Heald’s reassurance wasn’t convincing enough, plenty of recent Carnival guests in the comments were able to confirm that there was no sign of a shortage onboard.

“I have been on 4 cruises this winter. My 60th carnival cruise will be on the Vista in October. Eggs were not a problem. We had great times and memories,” one woman wrote.

“I had as many omelettes and over easy eggs as I wanted for breakfast every morning on a cruise about 4 weeks ago. So awesome. Just have to stand in eggs to order line,” another man confirmed.

No one reported having experienced any limitations on portions or extra fees to order the eggs, either.

Additionally, Carnival is not known to use powdered eggs for dishes like omelettes, opting for fresh eggs instead. These eggs are dehydrated and transformed into a powder, as their name suggests.

Powdered eggs allow for easy transportation and storage and are primarily used in culinary settings where a shelf-stable product may be needed – but they aren’t as widely used as they used to be and can even cost more than fresh eggs.

But while eggs aren’t going anywhere, rumors that another staple in the Lido Marketplace has gone away are true.

Grapes are a popular fruit that can complete a healthy breakfast or offer a sweet dessert. However, they have been phased out because having multiple guests pick the grapes off the vine – as what could happen in the buffet line – is unhygienic.

That said, it’s possible that the grapes will rejoin the eggs onboard in the future – or will perhaps be served in pre-picked bowls (instead of on the vine) as they have been in the past.

Teenager Causes Family Rift, Thinks She’s “Too Cool” For Disney

As a self-identified Disney adult, I truly cannot imagine how anyone can think they are too old or too cool for Disney Cruise Line.

During my time as a Disneyland cast member, it was always drilled into us to create magic for every member of the family – whether they were two or 92!

But one teenage girl has the opposite opinion from me, and now her mother is worried that her daughter will ruin the family’s upcoming Disney cruise.

“We booked this trip almost a year ago. My daughter is now throwing a big fit about our upcoming cruise because she’s too old and too cool to be seen near anything Disney,” the mother posted on Reddit in the hopes of receiving advice.

In addition, her daughter had also developed a sudden disgust for sharing a cruise cabin with the rest of the family and a newfound hatred for swimming – which was an activity she had previously enjoyed.

The mother continued: “She’s super annoyed and I’m worried she’s going to try and ruin this trip for her siblings. She’s already loudly mentioning how it’s for babies and how only babies can enjoy a Disney cruise.”

The advice was mixed among the hundreds of cruise fans who responded. Some said there was no winning against teenage angst and if the daughter didn’t enjoy the trip, it would be her own fault.

They also pointed out that as a teen, the daughter could safely explore the ship on her own if her mood was ruining the fun for the rest of the family.

“Let her chart her own course…I bet within just a few minutes on that ship, she’ll be having a great time. If she’s not, she’ll only have herself to blame. But encouraging her to do her own thing, you don’t have to worry about her unduly influencing her siblings’ enjoyment,” one person suggested.

Minors can only go so far when confined to a ship and cruising is quite safe – with prevalent surveillance and onboard security teams – so many parents do let their kids or teens roam free on sea days.

That said, they usually put certain boundaries in place, such as by setting curfews, having their kids update on their locations via a whiteboard or messaging, or always coming together in the evenings for dinner.

Fun For All Ages Onboard

While separating from their teen is one option the family has if she doesn’t shake her bad attitude, others were more optimistic and reassured the mother that the Disney magic will kick in as soon as the family embarks

Some also suggested that the parents should send their daughter videos or information about the entertainment options onboard and in the ports of call – letting her have some say in the activities and visually see that there is plenty for her to do.

“Disney has their magic way that will likely take over once you board…I wouldn’t make a big deal when she accepts it will be fun, she likely doesn’t want to hear I told you so,” a high school teacher replied.

Another parent spoke to their own experience with their teenage son: “We went on a Disney cruise in 2019 aboard the Fantasy. Our oldest was 16 at the time. Not only did he have a blast, but we barely saw him. He basically had the run of the ship and loved going to Vibe (the older kids club).”

My family sailed with Disney multiple times when I was a teenager, and I always made friends by the end of the second day. We would roam the ships in a pack of laughter and goofiness and I’m still in touch with many of these people over a decade later.

Many of the activities onboard, such as trivia, game shows, and the Broadway-caliber performances, are already suitable for all ages.

If the family is sailing on one of Disney’s newer ships, such as Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, or the upcoming Disney Destiny, the teen might change her tune about swimming when she learns about the AquaMouse – which is a thrilling water coaster at sea.

And of course, she can certainly hang out in Vibe, which is arguably the “coolest” of the kids clubs and designed just for teens between the ages of 14-17.

That’s where I always made the most of my friends, and they have plenty to do between planned activities, game nights, video games, movies, and a teens-only spa.

Alarms Raised on Cruise Ships as Nuclear Submarine Docks Nearby

0

Tensions surfaced in Gibraltar when several passenger-filled cruise ships sailed in the same waters as a nuclear submarine as it was surfacing near the gateway to the Mediterranean’s port.

As Saga Cruises’ 1,000-guest Spirit of Adventure was heading to the port during a 22-night voyage, and Celebrity Cruises’ 2,910-passenger Celebrity Apex sailed nearby on its route to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, during a 13-night adventure, environmentalists issued a warning.

“Verdemar-Ecologists in Action warns the cruise ships Celebrity Apex bound for Palma de Mallorca and the Spirit of Adventure, bound for Southampton, United Kingdom, that they run the risk of being next to a nuclear submarine,” the organization issued in a statement.

Passengers were unaware that the UK’s Royal Navy had docked its nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Astute, in Gibraltar’s military port on March 15, 2025, where Spirit of Adventure called three days later.

The Royal Navy’s lead operational submarine is known for being one of the most advanced nuclear submarines in the world.

It also, like any nuclear submarine, emits low levels of radiation, which prompted the environmental group to shoot off a warning.

The organization feels military vessels should not be docked in tourist ports, especially one as busy as Gibraltar, which receives nearly 300 cruise ships annually.

“Gibraltar must decide whether it wants a military port or a tourist port,” Verdemar-Ecologists in Action stated.

“The UK nuclear-powered submarine HMS Astute docking in Gibraltar’s military port on March 15, 2025, puts the Rock’s tourism sector at risk.”

Worth Reading: Cruise Ship’s Radiation Warning Sign Sparks Guest Concern

And it’s not the first time. The submarine last visited the port on February 6, 2025, sparking protests with the group calling the submarine a “floating bomb.”

Nearly a decade ago, another Royal Navy submarine, the HMS Ambush, actually collided with a merchant ship just 3 miles off of Gibraltar and needed to dock for external repairs.

Neither the Royal Navy nor the nearby cruise ships had any comment regarding this week’s visit.

Spirit of Adventure guests visiting Gibraltar enjoyed a carefree 9-hour call before reboarding the vessel for its scheduled March 22, 2025, return to Portsmouth.

Those aboard Celebrity Apex spent March 20 in Palma de Mallorca, nearly 475 nautical miles from the Rock, as Gibraltar is often called.

Sharing the Water

International waters – roughly 12 nautical miles from a coastline – do not belong to a single country and are open for use by all maritime craft.

Like cruise ships, submarines follow the laws of international waters and are required to surface when they enter the territorial waters of a country. They often notify authorities of their presence, especially in busy areas.

As with any ship, the submarines do visit military ports to stock up on supplies, make repairs, and undergo routine maintenance. As Gibraltar is a UK territory, the Royal Navy offers a military port for its ships, including submarines.

The Rock is not the only port where submarines make a regular appearance. In the US, for example, Pearl Harbor is a frequent stop for military submarines.

Here, cruise ship passengers in Honolulu seek out the submarines for photo ops and share them on social media without worry about low radiation emissions that could be contaminating the area.

Other popular cruise ports near military operations include San Diego, California; Sydney, Australia; Portsmouth, England; and Kiel, Germany.

Environmental groups around the world have raised concerns but military officials say the vessels are equipped to shield the nuclear reactors, preventing it from escaping into the environment.

Studies around naval bases and shipyards where nuclear submarines are docked or undergo maintenance show that radiation levels are very minimal and are within safety zones.

Carnival Cruise Line Teases About Next Excel Class Ship

The huge popularity of Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel class ships has eager cruisers excited about the next forthcoming ship in the class, Excel #4, scheduled to set sail in spring 2027.

While the vessel’s debut is still two years away, hopes are already growing for what the ship will deliver, including how she might be the same or different from her sister ships, Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, did recently note that news about the new ship will be coming soon, though he doesn’t say exactly what or precisely when.

“In the next coming chunk of time, we’re going to be telling you about the next Excel ship,” Heald announced in his daily Facebook video. “Wow, this, um… Can’t say anything else.”

This quickly caught the attention of Heald’s fans, who followed up with their excitement but wondered what a “chunk of time” might be.

“It should be in early April so stay tuned,” Heald said.

That means official news and announcements about the next ship in Carnival Cruise Line’s largest-ever class and the first new order for Carnival Corporation & plc in five years could just be days away.

The Next Excel Ship – What We Already Know

The announcement of the fourth Excel class ship was made in February 2024. The ship will be built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, with promises to “wow” guests.

As a sister ship to the existing vessels, the new Excel class will likely feature many of the same attractions and amenities of her older siblings, including the division into distinct themed zones, the extensive Ultimate Playground with the Bolt rollercoaster, a unique Emeril’s Bistro, and much more.

The ship will be powered by liquefied natural gas and will be able to welcome approximately 5,300 guests at double occupancy or up to 6,600 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Roughly 2,000 international crew members will be onboard to help every guest have their most FUN cruise vacation ever.

But there is so much more we don’t know about the ship, and what great fun is to come!

Naming the Next Excel Class Ship

Carnival Excel-Class Cruise Ships
Carnival Excel-Class Cruise Ships

The new ship’s name has not yet been announced. Carnival Cruise Line has, however, given each of the in-service Excel ships names that nod to the cruise line’s early vessels.

The original Mardi Gras was Carnival Cruise Line’s first ever ship when the cruise line began in 1972.

Celebration was in service with the line from 1987-2008, while Jubilee was in service from 1986-2004. Both were Holiday class ships.

But what about other past Carnival ship names that could be reused?

Carnival Holiday could be a nod to the lead ship of the Holiday class, while three other former names – Festivale, Tropicale, and Carnivale – have not yet been reused. The first two might be good choices, but “Carnival Carnivale” doesn’t have quite the right ring to it.

While the retired Fantasy class ship names could be reused, two Fantasy class vessels – Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise – are still in service, so it would be unusual to reuse those names while any sister ships are still sailing.

Of course, the new ship might have a completely new name as she represents a further evolution of the Excel class into what today’s cruisers want to enjoy.

Where Will the New Ship Homeport?

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship
Carnival Jubilee in Galveston, Texas

Carnival cruise fans are eager to know where the fourth Excel ship will be homeported and whether or not she’ll bring the newest, most updated Carnival cruising to a brand new homeport.

Mardi Gras is homeported from Port Canaveral, while Carnival Celebration is in Miami and Carnival Jubilee sails from Galveston. All three ships are staying in their respective homeports year-round at least until spring 2027 – just when the new ship is slated to arrive.

There is great interest in the possibility of homeporting the new Excel class ship from Long Beach, California, bringing the first of these large ships to the West Coast.

Because Long Beach is a year-round homeport, this would be a great place to position the vessel for exciting Mexican Riviera itineraries as well as Carnival Journeys sailings to Hawaii or even offering longer California coast and Alaska sailings.

While it might be exciting to position an Excel class ship in Australia, this might not be as likely with the recent growth of Carnival’s brand Down Under with Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter joining the fleet. Still, this might be another option.

The new ship could also offer more seasonal options rather than remaining year-round sailing from the same homeport. Perhaps she will begin her career in Europe before moving to the Caribbean, Alaska, Australia, or even Asia for unique itineraries throughout her first year or two.

While Carnival Cruise Line does not traditionally do an inaugural season moving a ship to multiple homeports over just a few months, this might be a new strategy the line could try with the new ship.

Of course, it’s also possible that she might displace one of the existing Excel ships and take over sailing from Port Canaveral, Miami, or Galveston while the other ship moves on to a new homeport. Or one homeport could take pride in offering sailings from two Excel ships simultaneously!

Will the New Ship Have a New Theme?

Carnival Jubilee Currents Zone
Carnival Jubilee Currents Zone

Each of Carnival’s Excel class ships has a distinctive theme. Mardi Gras is the most classic of the ships and set the standard for the zone design with different decor and options in different spaces onboard.

Planned around the cruise line’s 50th birthday extravaganza, Carnival Celebration truly celebrates all things Carnival. Of special note is the Golden Jubilee bar that showcases Carnival history with dioramas and artifacts from all five decades of Fun Ships.

Carnival Jubilee is the first in the fleet to have a special homeport connection with the Texas Lone Star on her bow, as well as unique themed parties and shows that offer Texan hospitality and fun to every guest onboard.

So, what will the next ship’s theme be? Maybe another homeport connection, or perhaps a tribute to a specific sailing region.

How about a Caribbean theme for all the top Caribbean destinations Carnival visits? Or maybe a Mexican theme (Carnival Fiesta, anyone?) for the vibrant Mexican destinations the cruise line offers?

Next Steps for the New Ship

Carnival Jubilee at Meyer Werft
Carnival Jubilee at Meyer Werft

The very first step that needs to be taken for the new ship is her steel cutting as official, physical construction begins on her hull. At that time, coins will also be laid under the hull in a shipyard tradition.

This might also be when more news is revealed about the vessel, including her name or theme. Blocks will begin to be laid into place, and eventually the hull will take shape.

After the hull is complete – a process that takes several months, or even more than a year, depending on schedule – the ship will be floated out. This is a special milestone when the ship touches water for the first time, and the hull is complete.

The interior outfitting is the next phase of construction, as the details of the ship come together. As this process nears its conclusion, the ship will undergo sea trials to test all critical systems.

Once the sea trials are complete and the interior outfitting is finished, the ship will be delivered or “handed over” to Carnival Cruise Line. Her construction is complete, but she may still need final interior details and must be supplied. Crew members will start to report, and just a few weeks later, the ship will welcome her first guests.

There is a lot to come in the next two years for the new Excel class ship. Stay tuned every step of the way for the latest updates, news, and announcements as she comes together!

MSC Cruises Expands ‘Dirty Dancing’ Concert to Another Ship

MSC Cruises is bringing more high-powered entertainment to its mega-ship MSC Virtuosa in the summer of 2025, offering new musical productions, including “Dirty Dancing: In Concert,” a show that will debut on the line’s newest ship, MSC World America, in April 2025.

MSC World America will begin sailing from PortMiami in April 2023. MSC Cruises’ announced in January that the “Dirty Dancing: In Concert” show would initially launch on the new ship.

Based on the hit 1987 romantic movie “Dirty Dancing,” the concert promises to bring the classic, fiery love affair between characters Johnny Castle and Frances (Baby) Houseman to life with a team of singers and dancers performing in the ship’s theater.

The 90-minute show will be staged multiple times during each of MSC Virtuosa’s summer itineraries operating roundtrip from Southampton, including sea-day matinees.

We are seeing more UK customers than ever choose MSC Cruises as their holiday choice and I attribute this to our exceptional onboard offering, including excellent dining, a large range of leisure activities and of course, top class entertainment, said Antonio Paradiso, vice president of international sales at MSC Cruises

We want our guests to feel at home on board MSC Virtuosa and I know ‘Dirty Dancing in Concert’ will be a popular choice for anyone travelling with us,Paradiso added.

Show organizers say the concert, set to debut aboard the 6,300-guest ship on July 10, 2025, will feature a “high energy finale,” and guests can enjoy even more of the “Dirty Dancing” atmosphere at themed after-parties.

The “Dirty Dancing” extravaganza is just one of several new presentations planned for MSC Virtuosa. Guests also will have opportunities to attend the “Songbook Abba” show, highlighting iconic hits from the group ABBA, as well as “Starwalker,” which brings to life the music and dance moves made famous by Michael Jackson.

Guests looking for thrills will be able to experience two new cirque aerial performances in the ship’s Carousel Lounge. Work on these productions has started, with one set to launch in June 2025 and another in the fall of 2025. Guests will be invited to name the shows as their debut nears.

Additionally, the show “Hall of Fame,” a concert focused on pop legends set to debut onboard MSC World America, will be expanded to MSC Virtuosa.

MSC Cruises executives point to the new offerings as activity choices geared to various types and ages of guests.

The ship will also delight children with the LEGO Family Game Show and a LEGO Family Parade. Other activities for children will feature new games, parties, and tech-focused events.

The new entertainment offerings are sure to be welcome additions to indoor activities, but outside, MSC Virtuosa will offer breathtaking experiences and views as the ship sails Northern Europe and the Western Mediterranean from Southampton.

The Meraviglia-Plus-class ship that launched in 2019 is currently sailing a winter series of cruises in the Caribbean but in April will deploy to the UK port.
