Make the Most of Small Bathrooms on a Cruise Ship

Cruise ship cabins are notorioiusly small, and the bathrooms are smaller still. Typically measuring at just 25-30 square feet, there can be barely enough room to turn around in an oceangoing bathroom, much less a spacious retreat to take care of all your daily bathroom ablutions. There are easy ways you can make the most of even the tiniest bathroom, however, without feeling cramped or crowded.

What a Cruise Ship Bathroom Has… And What It Doesn’t

While shipboard bathrooms may be small, they are efficiently designed with adequate features for most travelers. A toilet, sink, mirror, small waste basket, some shelving and counterspace, and a shower with a door or curtain are standard features, and towels, toilet paper, and tissues are supplied.

Most cruise lines also furnish basic shampoo and shower gel in wall-mounted dispensers in the shower. A small, retractable clothesline is often placed in the shower, there may be a magnifying mirror mounted to the wall, and there is usually an outlet available, though it may be mounted awkwardly near the light. The door may also have hooks available for hanging clothes.

Take a look at all these travel bathroom accessories for your cruise vacation.

Most cruise ship bathrooms, however, do not have independent vents (though a small vent may be connected to the light), bathtubs, dual sinks, multiple outlets, vanity areas, or windows.

Some of these features may be part of the more luxurious bathrooms in suites or on luxury cruise lines, but standard bathrooms on mainstream cruise lines are more basic. This does not mean they are inadequate, however, but savvy cruisers know how to take advantage of every inch of space and help even the smallest bathroom meet their needs.

Making the Most of Tiny Bathrooms

There are many easy tricks you can use to make even a tiny bathroom seem more spacious. First, pack light and do not bring extra toiletries you won’t need during your cruise.

Opt for travel-sized bottles, and choose products that can be shared, such shampoo or lotion, to reduce the number of bottles you bring. If you bring medication, use small travel bottles and only bring as many pills as you are likely to need during your cruise instead of bringing along full bottles.

How you organize your toiletries can make a great difference in bathroom space. An over-the-door shoe or pocket organizer can help you clear off counter and shelf space, or you can choose a small toiletry caddy or bag that is designed to hang from a bathroom hook.

Even if you just opt for a simple vanity pouch, you can more easily corral small bottles and other items so they don’t spread out over the counters.

Extra hooks can be a lifesaver in a small bathroom, and you can find inexpensive magnetic hooks or suction cup hooks that are perfect to use on a cruise.

This can help you hang a shower pouf, loofah, or other items on the mirror or walls, even inside the shower, so the bathroom is less cluttered. You might even consider a basic suction cup soap dish or mini-shelf for extra storage.

It is even better if you don’t store all your bathroom accessories in the bathroom itself. Even the smallest, most basic cruise ship cabins generally have a vanity area in the main part of the cabin, outside the bathroom. Use one of the drawers in that area for makeup, perfume, medications, and other items that don’t strictly need to be in the bathroom.

Bathroom Shower

Back in the bathroom, it’s important to consider odors and humidity. Because the bathroom is so tiny, it will fill with steam quickly, and because there is only a small vent (and some ships may not have even that), it can be difficult to eliminate unpleasant odors or extra steam after lengthy showers.

Bring along a car air freshener to use in the bathroom, or invest in toilet drops or sprays such as Poo-pourri that help eliminate odors.

Shortening your showers or using slightly cooler water can minimize extra steam, or you may want to consider showering in the morning or early evening rather than later at night in order to give your room time to clear out and cool off again before sleeping.

Check these handy bathroom organizers from Amazon.

Because space is at such a premium in the bathroom, it can also be helpful to reuse towels. This will ensure you don’t have to use valuable counter space to store additional towels, help out your already hard-working stateroom steward, and also conserve resources onboard. Most cruise lines encourage towel reuse to help conserve water and energy and minimize the use of detergents and other chemicals, and it’s a simple step that will help save bathroom space as well.

Even with all the tips and tricks you may use to maximize your cruise ship bathroom space, you may still find yourself stumbling around, bumping into things, or tripping if you need to visit the bathroom at night.

Most bathrooms on cruise ships do not have nightlights, and standard night lights will not always fit in the awkwardly placed bathroom outlet. Bringing along a battery-operated nightlight or even a basic glow stick can give you just enough light in the bathroom to use the facilities without shedding the glare of the overhead light over the entire stateroom.

Cruise ships may be getting larger and larger, but the bathrooms in most cruise ship cabins can be surprisingly small. By making the most of each inch of space, however, you can easily attend to all your bathroom needs, and all you’ll remember of your cruise is the big fun you had on board.

Crew Member Lost From Carnival Horizon

We are sad to post that the crew of Carnival Horizon has lost a fellow team member. It’s never good to hear about something like this and it makes us want to support the hard-working crew and appreciate just how much they do to make an amazing cruise vacation what it is.

Crew Member Passes Away on Carnival Horizon

An Indian crew member in his 30s named Ravi Singh Bisht has sadly passed away while onboard the newest ship in the fleet. He leaves behind his wife, mother, father, sister and his brother who also works for the cruise line. Ravi was working in the Culinary Arts department since joining Carnival in 2012.

It isn’t clear what actually happened to him but an anonymous source from onboard Carnival Horizon said it may have been related to a Galley party he attended the night before. He was found the following morning of Grand Turk which was August 11.

Carnival Horizon Crew Letter

Carnival Horizon was around 2 hours late departing Grand Turk due to the crew member passing away.

Ravi’s family is being provided care and support by Carnival Cruise Line and no doubt his fellow team members are thinking about it. He’s going to be missed especially in the Galley where he worked well and made friends. Crew members are being provided counseling on the ship if needed.

The Carnival cruise ship is currently sailing an 8-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary which includes calls in Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. There are 1,450 crew members working on the ship and over 60 different nationalities making sure we all have the best vacation ever.

10 Items You Never Thought To Take on a Cruise

We’ve all done those searches on help and suggestions for what to pack for a cruise vacation. What we haven’t done is take a look at things which can make a difference and we never thought about taking.

I was just doing some general browsing online and came across some inspiring products which really could come in handy during the cruise. So I decided to put together a list of 10 items which would be great to pack and what you may have never thought of.

Don’t expect your usual common items in the list below. We’ve gone a step further by digging out items which are easy to use recommended on Amazon and pretty cool to use. Let’s get started.

Foot Pads

This item was actually my inspiration for doing this list and they are even made of biodegradable material so have a limited impact on the environment. A foot Pad can be worn on the beach during a port of call to protect from the often sizzling hot sand and in the water too. They can be used for many situations including walking around the cruise ship lido deck as they are non-slippy.

I wouldn’t use these for other shore excursions away from the beach or walking too much around the ship in them but definitely worth packing as they take up hardly any space. You can get them from Amazon here.

Foldable Umbrella Cap

Everyone thinks a cruise vacation is all sun, sand, and sea but that isn’t true all the time! It does actually rain sometimes, even when your ship is docked in port for the day. What better reason to pack the Umbrella Cap right?

The Umbrella Cap which I’m suggesting today comes in yellow and blue. It feels like a regular rain hoody but actually protects the body from rain and it’s totally handsfree. It can be pushed down flat when not in use so can lay flat not taking up much room in the luggage. Go and take a look here.

Sneaker Raincoats

Not sure why I’m continuing with rain on a cruise! To be prepared for bad weather in port then you’ll appreciate these sneaker raincoats. The last thing you want is your shiny new shoes getting wet and dirty.

The raincoats for your shoes could also be used if on any Jungle adventure and you want to protect them from any potential mud or stains. These are the ones we suggest to buy.

Colorful LED Lanyard

Many cruise passengers use lanyards during the cruise because they keep the keycards safe along with any cash and some other things. A cruise line lanyard can easily be purchased at the onboard shops and will usually have a logo design.

Don’t follow the trend and be like your fellow guests, get some attention with a Colorful LED lanyard. The only downside is that everyone is going to ask you where you got it from! Get yours right here.

Waterproof Case

Probably one of the most essential items on the list, a waterproof case which can protect one of the most important gadgets a guest would ever take on a cruise – a cell phone! The pouch on this list can be used for any phone, you can actually get iPhone specific cases right here.

What’s good about these kind cases is that you can also put money and any important cards inside. Good for going in the water or even protected from the sand. You can find out more by clicking here.

Handheld Cool Air Fan

Let’s focus on this device which can keep us cool during those hot sea days at the pool and in port. There are many handheld fans out there and some even spray water. The issue with the water spraying is that it only lasts a few minutes and can leak, I bought one a couple of years so trust me on that! I think it’s been thrown out now.

With the air fan I’m including on this list it has three-speed settings which can be useful. I also really liked the wristband part so good for carrying out during the vacation. It can hang up easily in the cabin too. Do take a more detailed look here.

Wrinkle Releaser

It may not be the most impressive item on the list, but it sure is one of the most important items that cruisers wish they had packed. There have been many times when I’ve been on a cruise vacation and found my clothes too wrinkled, some pretty bad!

Some cruise lines do provide laundry rooms onboard, which do include an iron, but it can be an inconvenience. When you’ve just come back onboard from an epic day on the island and need to get ready for dinner, there is never any time to get to the laundry room, let alone find it.

This is where the small travel-sized Downy spray comes in. It takes up a small amount of space in the luggage and not only removes wrinkles but also freshens up clothes. Get your on Amazon here.

Travel Toiletry Organizer

If you’re a cruise addict, then no doubt you’ve seen those hanging closet organizers for the cabin. What I haven’t seen before is something similar for toiletries and even cosmetics. Cruisers can use this organizer by hanging it up in the bathroom which is often small on cruise ships unless you’re lucky enough to be booked in a suite. Take a look at Amazon.

Mosquito Repellent Bracelet

Depending on the shore excursion and the region you are taking a cruise vacation, mosquitos can be a bit of an issue. You can use mosquito spray and general bug repellant, but they can smell and be inconvenient to use.

These bracelets fit in well during the cruise and can be worn all the time to make sure you’re always protected. The bands are also waterproof, which is very important for the ship pool and the beach in port. Find more details over here.

Travel Zip Scarf

This isn’t just a fashionable scarf that can be worn around the ship; it’s also able to hold some essential items. The zipped pocket is large enough to hold an iPhone or passport and can be kept secret and safe while wearing it.

The scarf comes in many different designs and colors, so it is worth a look not just for yourself but for someone you know who likes to travel and cruise. Find out more here.

Final Thoughts

I hope you found the list useful and at least one of the items could benefit your cruise vacation experience. Just remember to make sure you don’t overpack and keep things limited.

Places On A Carnival Cruise Ship For Crew Members Only

When on a cruise you’ll spend most of your time in the public areas and I bet you’ve always wondered what the crew areas look like. In this article, I’m going to show you several places onboard a Carnival cruise ship which you might have never seen before, you’ll even be surprised at what’s hidden away behind the doors and walkways all over the ship.

A lot of the areas you’re not familiar with is the “Crew Only” areas, connected staircases and corridors where the crew can access just about any part of the ship without being seen.

There’s a whole new world down below which is a hive of activity day and night. Time away from the guests is needed where the crew doesn’t always have to smile, they can feel free to relax with their fellow onboard mates from all over the world.

Take a look at behind the scene areas where passengers can’t go:

Legendary I-95

Let’s start with the main corridor which is not just an essential area for the crew but also the entire cruise ship. Known as the I-95, it is one large corridor which goes along almost the entire length of the ship. From here the crew can gain access to different staircases, elevators and get to their cabins.

Carnival Valor

The I-96 is always busy with crew members heading off to work and for those who have some free time to chat with their friends. When guests embark and disembark the cruise the I-95 takes center stage, all the luggage is stored in the corridor and in a space called the Marshaling Area, from there housekeeping can get to the luggage to deliver to passengers staterooms. The same happens when the voyage comes to an end, the luggage is taken off in pallets and then transferred to the terminal.

Love Carnival Cruise Line? Then you should take a look at these 10 items.

Parts of the I-95 are also used when in port, guests will often get a glimpse as they go on and off the gangway. There is more possibility of checking out the corridor when tendering too. I-95 will usually be on deck zero but does depend on the ship’s design.

Crew Pools

Carnival Cruise Ship

You might have wondered what that area is with the jacuzzis or small pool down below near the ship’s bow. This is an area where the crew can head on out for some fresh air. When off duty, they can relax in the pools as much as they want and enjoy the stunning ocean views.

When the vessel is departing its homeport the crew can often be seen getting the last cell phone signals with phone calls back home. At night, the deck can be full of activity with fellow workers socializing and enjoying their limited free time.

It does depend on the class of ship where this area is located, on Conquest class ships it is deck 4 forward, well known in the crew community!

Crew Laundry

Carnival Freedom

There are guests laundry rooms scattered around the stateroom decks but the crew is not usually allowed to use them. Hidden down below is the crew laundry, a place which is busy all the time and uses strict safety procedures to stop any fires from breaking out. There are at least a dozen or so drying and washing machine’s along with irons so crew members can look their best for the guests.

Crew Training Center

Crew training is extremely important to cruise lines and often ships will feature their very own center. At the training center, there will be two dedicated employees who will help all those working onboard to develop their personal skills. These could include learning a new language or using computer learning programs for their future. The staff who work in the training center will also be involved with welcoming new team members to the ship and training in hospitality.

Crew Gym

Carnival Valor

The guest gym which is usually located at the top of the vessel is out of bounds for most of the crew. The cruise line will always offer a gym facility just for crew near the bottom of the ship. When off duty members can use the gym as much as they like but they won;t get the stunning ocean views which the passengers get. Provided in the Crew Gym will be weights, benches and workout machines but they may not be as good as the ones guests can use.

Crew Mess

Carnival Valor

The Crew Mess is probably one of the most important areas onboard for the crew. It is like a large dining hall where everyone can get their breakfast, lunch, dinner and even midnight snack. It isn’t always open with food, but often, if the crew are hungry, they can enjoy some pastry snacks along with tea, coffee, and juices.

In the crew mess, there will usually be a large TV where members can come together and watch sports. Even in the later hours of the night, this area can be full of activity as the crew head on down to eat after a long day’s shift. One of the best times to eat in the mess is at midnight, it is when food not used in the guest dining rooms head on down to the crew, this could include the extremely iconic Carnival Chocolate Melting Cake! It can be the best time to go to the mess and a time when fellow workers can come together and discuss their day.

Internet Cafe

Carnival Valor

In today’s advanced world, there isn’t a huge need for an internet cafe onboard a cruise ship. Carnival Cruise Line still does provide a room near the crew bar where members can use a computer and get online. For a fee, crew members can check their email and browse the web. This is also the place where the crew wifi is maintained throughout the vessel. The best signal can often be found in the internet cafe.

Staff Mess

Carnival Valor

There is another mess room for other types of workers, they are called staff members and will include those working in the Tax-free shops, Casino, Spa, Guest Services desk, Camp Ocean and more. This will be the place where new dining room members can learn and train before joining the guest dining rooms. Staff members can order food during breakfast, lunch, and dinner which is the only time when the staff mess is open.

Captain & Officers Dining Rooms

Carnival Valor

There are two other places onboard, including the Captain’s Dining Room and the Officer’s Dining Room. These two separate rooms are often next to each other and only the officers or captain can use them. There will be trainee dining room staff who will serve them just like they would regular guests. This area I’ve never managed to get in when it is being used, but I’m pretty sure they can order just about anything they want!

Crew Barber

Carnival Valor

You have to remember that the crew lives on the ship for at least six months at a time. During this contract, they will need a haircut, they can’t always get off in port and find a barber. The Crew Barber is the man to see for a really good cut. The barber works onboard too so cutting fellow crew members hair can only be done in his free time (in the evening).

The barbershop will be a small room with one chair, a mirror, and a small TV. It will be located in one of the crew corridors in the middle of where all the cabins are. The barber will usually charge around $10 and can be a great source of extra income while onboard.

Crew Bar

Carnival Valor

We’ve saved the most important until last! The legendary Crew Bar, a place where all the action happens and the center to crew life while onboard. Located on deck zero just off the I-95 on the bigger ships, the bar will open early evening and during this time any crew member can come in and enjoy a drink or two. Prices are very cheap, I’m not going to tell you how much because it is so cheap you won’t like it! Snacks can also be purchased from the bar including popcorn and chocolate bars.

Around 9-10 in the evening the Crew bar will start to get really busy, the bartenders will be running around like crazy trying to keep everyone happy. The busiest day is the last day of the cruise, the reason for this is each cruise many crew members will have completed their contracts. To say bye to friends they’ll often meet in the bar for some last drinks together.

Carnival Valor

Also in the Crew bar, many events and activities will be held, these could include a poker night, karaoke, quiz night, bingo and even a foosball competition. Without the Crew Bar life onboard would not be so good. Never ask a crew member how the bar was last night! What happens in the crew bar stays in the crew bar!

10 Items Just for Those Who Love Carnival Cruise Line

If you’re a huge fan of Carnival Cruise Line and keep going back for more cruises then you’ll appreciate this list of items. I’ve actually been seeing these dedicated items around for a while and finally got around to putting together a list which might be worth a look at.

Before I discuss all things Carnival Cruise Line, many of them are just fun items that many loyal cruisers will like for the home or as gifts. Some items can also be useful for the actual cruise vacation.

Let’s take a look at the 10 things just for those who love Carnival:

Carnival Towel

How about moving away from the standard Carnival towels which are provided during the cruise and go for something more classic! On this towel can be found the Carnival Inspiration. Go and check the details here.

Wall Canvas

Oh my! I think this is my favorite. A large collection of canvas wall art featuring one of the more modern ships in the fleet next to one of the classic former Carnival ships which started it all. There is actually another version of this wall art featuring just one ship. This item will go well behind the sofa in the living room or even in the office. Take a look here.

Coffee Mug

A home wouldn’t be complete without a Carnival coffee mug. There’s nothing better than drinking a nice coffee or even tea and getting inspired about cruising. This mug features the Carnival Valor while arriving at PortMiami, Florida. More details on this here.

Playing Cards

Carnival playing Cards are one of the most requested items in the onboard Fun Shops but unfortunately, they don’t sell them. If you do want to enjoy a good game of cards with family and friends then you can actually buy from Amazon. Get the playing cards here.

Carnival Luggage Tags

We all need luggage tags not just for a cruise but also other kinds of travel too. So why not show off a use dedicated Carnival tags. These are the best ones you can get online and the seller actually has a wide range of options to go along with them too. Even if you’re not someone who loves Carnival as much as we first thought, they cover other cruise lines too. Get the tags here.

Mouse Pad

This is a must for loyal Carnival cruisers, a Carnival Liberty mouse pad (not the mouse) for the home desktop computer or even a laptop. There is also another mouse pad available which features the Carnival Victory. Go and get your mouse pad here.

3D Ship Puzzle

This 3D Carnival cruise ship puzzle would make a good gift. It is a Spirit class cruise ship but don’t expect it to be an exact replica. It’s for those of 8 years and older and has a nice ocean base too. Check it out here.

Shower Curtain

This may be a little over the top but how about a Carnival Imagination lido deck shower curtain? You can imagine that you’re enjoying one of the jacuzzies on the open deck of a Carnival cruise! I chose this one because it showed just a regular fun day at sea, there are some other Carnival shower curtains including a Carnival Magic one and the Carnival Fantasy at night which is also pretty good. Take a look here.

Towel Animal Book

We’ve all gone back to our stateroom and found a creative towel animal left by the steward. Carnival Cruise Line even offers towel folding classes during the voyage but now you can try at home using the dedicated book. Check it out here.

Custom Magnet

I think this is really good for an upcoming Carnival cruise. Get a custom magnet made which can then be used on your cabin door. Also good to just put on the fridge at home as it has the cruise line logo on. Get it done right here.

Final Thoughts

I only went through the best 10 Carnival items but feel free to keep browsing to find more that interests you. It’s a shame there weren’t more cool things featuring Carnival so we can deck out our entire home!

It’s also good to browse in the onboard Fun Shops as they have an entire logo section with items which can be purchased for or after the cruise vacation. If I come across anything else I sure will add it on here to share with all of you.

Royal Caribbean Is Going to Eliminate Plastic Straws On All Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean has announced that plastic straws will be eliminated on all cruise ships by the end of 2019. This also includes all cruise brands owned by the company including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, TUI Cruises, and Pullmantur Cruceros.

All Plastic Straws Are Going!

Royal Caribbean will welcome 2019 free of plastic straws which is an expansion to a request only plastic straw policy introduced over a year ago. Guests will instead have to use paper straws and they will still need to be requested. Guests aboard all 50 cruise ships will also start seeing Forrest Stewardship Council-certified wood coffee stirrers and bamboo garnish picks to reduced plastic usage even further.

That’s just the start! Royal Caribbean will enhance the plastic reduction program a lot more and the elimination of plastic straws is just the beginning. A plastic audit is underway which is set to lead with an elimination of larger plastic items like condiment packets, cups, and bags by 2020.

Richard Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, said:

“Healthy oceans are vital to the success of our company. For over 25 years, our Save the Waves program has guided us to reduce, reuse, and recycle everything we can. Eliminating single-use plastics is another step in that program.”

Other cruise lines have also taken steps to reduce plastic straw usage by only providing at a guest’s request. Carnival Corporation, which owns major cruise brands including Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises, has not yet made a move to totally eliminate plastic straws, but over time, more will be done.

RCL’s Save the Waves Program

Since 1992, RCL’s Save the Waves program has brought the best sustainability practices to the company’s ships. The program introduced state-of-the-art recycling centers onboard ships, which are equipped with shredders, balers, and compactors, as well as crushers for glass, light bulbs, tin, and aluminum.

More From Cruise Hive

Their goal is “zero landfill”, i.e. all waste is reused, recycled or incinerated. RCL already does that for its ships that operate in ports with appropriate facilities. For the rest, the average waste-to-landfill has been reduced to less than 0.5 pounds per day per person – less than 1/8 of the US average.

25 Tips for Packing Less on a Cruise Vacation

Cruise ship cabins are notorious for their small size and it can be frustrating to take a once-in-a-lifetime cruise vacation only to feel crowded and cramped in your stateroom. By carefully packing, however, you can easily fit everything you need in your luggage and stateroom without clutter, squeezing or leaving essential items behind.

Why Pack Less?

Why is it so important to minimize your luggage on a cruise? Cruise ships may claim their cabins have multiple closets and ample storage space, but that storage space is nearly always smaller than expected once you’re actually in the cabin.

Closets are typically small, drawers are usually narrow and shelves are often tiny. Furthermore, some storage space is often taken up by mandatory life jackets or spare pillows and blankets, and you don’t want to be tripping over overflowing closets throughout your cruise.

Take a look at these perfect storage items for your cruise cabin.

The less you pack, the less hassle you’ll have getting your luggage on and off the ship, particularly if you opt for self-assist embarkation and debarkation and tote all your bags yourself. Less luggage also means you may avoid hefty baggage fees from airlines if you’re flying to and from your cruise. A little extra room in your luggage also gives you room to bring home souvenirs without overstuffing your bags.

Fortunately, it is easier than many passengers realize to pack less for your cruise and still feel well-equipped for setting sail.

25 Ways You Can Pack Less for a Cruise

1. Use Only Smaller Bags

It’s a strange, unwritten rule of packing that you inevitably fill up your bag, no matter what size it is. If you automatically start with smaller bags when packing for a cruise, you won’t be tempted to fill up extra space with too much stuff to fit in your cabin.

2. Use Hard-Sided Luggage

Soft-sided luggage may collapse easily to fit in smaller spaces, but it also expands more easily if you’re trying to cram too much into every corner. If you use hard-sided bags, you’ll have to pack more lightly to fit everything in, and what you do have in your bags will be more protected.

Get your cruise inspired luggage from Amazon.

3. Empty Out First

Before packing, be sure your luggage is completely empty. You don’t want to waste space by accidentally taking along anything left in a hidden pocket during your last trip. Similarly, empty out your wallet or purse before your cruise so you aren’t taking along anything you won’t need.

4. Don’t Pack Luggage in Luggage

Don’t use valuable luggage space by packing extra empty bags. That beach bag you want for your day on the sand? Use it as a piece of luggage itself instead, already packed with your beach essentials so you’re ready to hit the sand.

5. Use What the Ship Offers

Don’t pack anything the ship will provide for you. Most cruise ship cabins are already equipped with shampoo, body wash and conditioner, as well as tissues, beach towels and hangers. There is no need to pack along these items when they’ll already be waiting for you on board.

6. Know Your Cruise Lifestyle

Be truthful about how you want to spend your cruise vacation. If you plan on spending most of your time by the pool, you may need an extra swimsuit, but you won’t need extra shorts or additional tops. Keep in mind your shore tours when packing as well, and don’t take what you don’t need.

7. Skip the Camera

Of course you want to capture the fun moments of your cruise with a series of snapshots, but most smartphones have cameras that can take photos perfectly good for sharing on social media. There is no need to pack along a bulky extra camera if you aren’t a professional photographer.

8. Download Your Entertainment

You may want to bring along books, DVDs or other entertainment on your cruise. Don’t pack bulky items, though, and instead download your favorite books, shows and movies onto a tablet or phone to reduce what you pack and save space.

9. Travel-Sizes Are Your Friend

If you want to bring along specific products, such as soaps or shampoos, opt for travel sizes rather than full-size bottles you won’t finish during your cruise. If your favorite products don’t come in travel sizes, buy small bottles and decant what you need into smaller sizes.

Travel sized toiletries can be purchased from Amazon right here.

10. Count Pills and Daily Needs

If you take daily vitamins or medication, count how many you need into a small bottle instead of bringing more than you will need for your cruise. Of course you will want extra in case of delays, but it is unlikely that you’d need to bring a full month of medication for a shorter cruise.

11. Choose Outfits Beforehand

Planning your daily outfits before you travel can help you keep from packing clothes you won’t wear. Check out the dress code for your cruise line to be sure you have the right attire, but don’t pack so many options that you’ll be struggling to fit extra clothes in the tiny closets.

Browse all this Cruise Wear from Amazon for your next vacation at sea.

12. Bring Only Versatile Clothes

When choosing your cruise clothing, opt for versatile selections that can be reworn with different accessories or matched up differently to create different looks from the same clothes. The same is especially true for bulky shoes – only bring shoes you will definitely wear more than once.

13. Pack With a Buddy

If you’re traveling with friends or family members who share your sizes and style, consider swapping clothing throughout the cruise so you have more options without adding extra luggage. This is especially true for children who may be able to share clothes for different looks with ease.

Get all your cruise travel accessories from Amazon by clicking here.

14. Plan to Do Laundry

Cruise ships always have small laundry rooms available for passenger use, or you could opt for the dry cleaning or valet laundry services. This will allow you to rewear outfits even if they’ve gotten excessively dirty, and you won’t need to pack extras for a longer cruise.

15. Eliminate Non-Essentials

Before you put anything in your bags, make sure you will absolutely use it on your cruise. For example, ladies may not need products for their menstrual cycle if there’s no chance it will happen during their cruise. Extra makeup, jewelry options, multiple ties and other non-essentials can also be trimmed.

16. Minimize Devices and Accessories

It can be difficult to unplug while on vacation, but minimizing the devices you bring on a cruise can help you tune in to what’s happening around the ship rather than staying glued to a screen. Similarly, bring chargers and cords that can be shared between devices to minimize accessories.

17. Leave Work at Home

A cruise is supposed to be relaxing, so don’t feel guilty about leaving work at home. That includes the laptop or paperwork that might be essential for work, but certainly isn’t needed for a getaway. Cruise ship internet is slow and expensive, anyway, so leaving work home will save more than just space.

18. Skip Unnecessary Backups

Don’t duplicate anything in your luggage. Nights may get cool even in the Caribbean, for example, but do you really need both a light jacket and a sweatshirt? What about those extra glasses you never wear, or a second swimsuit when you usually only visit the pool once? Leave the backups behind.

19. Trim Toiletries

It isn’t necessary to pack along your entire bathroom for a cruise. If you only use a foot scrub, deep conditioner or face mask once a week, for example, see if you can go without when you’re on your cruise and you’ll save space in that tiny bathroom.

Small travel toiletries are suggested, take at these handy bags to put them in.

20. Skip the Snacks

With so much food available on a cruise, don’t stress about bringing snacks along. You can always get ice cream, pizza, cookies, room service and more if you’re ever a bit peckish, without needing to haul along extra food in your luggage. The same goes for soda and water, which you can get on board easily.

21. Know What You Can’t Bring

Be aware of prohibited items that you aren’t allowed to bring on a cruise ship, and save space in your luggage instead of packing items such as candles, scooters, drones, pool toys and other unwelcome items. Check your cruise line for the exact policy on which items are not permitted on board.

22. Buy It On Board

While prices may be higher, it can be easier to get some items – such as large bottles of sunscreen – on the ship. You can even save room in your luggage and opt to wear souvenir shirts that you buy along the way instead of packing more clothes.

23. Spread Out Your Stuff

When you think you have selected everything you want to pack, spread it all out before adding it to your bags. This will help you evaluate your choices and ensure you aren’t packing any duplicates or unnecessary items. Try to eliminate a few extra items before you put anything in your luggage.

24. Pack Early

Waiting to pack at the last minute will make you feel panicked and rushed, and make it more likely that you overpack for your cruise. Instead, start packing several days early so you can make better choices and don’t feel pressured to pack more than you really need.

25. Pack for Density

When you are ready to pack your bags, use every bit of available space wisely. Pack socks or underwear inside shoes, for example, to save space and help your shoes keep their shape. This will help you fit everything you need into a smaller bag that will be easier to handle.

While not every tip will work for every passenger or every cruise, with so many different ways to pack less, you’re sure to find some ways to trim down your luggage so you have less hassle and more space to enjoy during your vacation, no matter where you are sailing.

Carnival Cruise Dining Options Worth Paying For

Cruise lines are well known for their endless eats. On Carnival Cruise Line, each ship offers a variety of delicious dining options included in your cruise fare, from the great variety of the Lido buffet restaurants to the gourmet menus in the main dining rooms to extra snacks through room service, pizzerias, delis, ice cream machines and more.

While you can dine quite sumptuously on a Carnival ship without ever spending extra on food, there are a number of delicious options you may want to consider spending a little more to enjoy.

Why Pay More for Food?

With so many free dining options available onboard Carnival ships, why would passengers want to spend more money on dining extras? While the free dining options are delicious, there are exclusive extras available only from the extra-charge dining venues.

Couples who want a romantic dinner, for example, may prefer to pay for a restaurant that offers a more intimate atmosphere than the large dining rooms, and where they can be assured of getting a private table instead of being grouped with tablemates.

Specialty restaurants often offer exclusive menu options that aren’t available elsewhere on the ship, and may even incorporate local flavors to represent ports of call along the itinerary. Portions may be more generous, and the food quality could be superior even to the already excellent options available elsewhere on board.

Some extra venues also feature different experiences, such as cooking demonstrations, exclusive wine pairings or even the opportunity to dine with the ship’s captain or another high-ranking officer.

The exact restaurants available vary on each Carnival Cruise ship, and different venues charge differently. Some feature a per-person surcharge regardless of the menu choices, while others have a-la-carte pricing that depends on each individual selection.

Payments are charged to the dining passenger’s sail and sign account, however, so there is no need to worry about other forms of payment when indulging in these delicious options.

6 Ways to Protect Your Cruise Ship Luggage

You pack carefully for your cruise, choosing just the right attire and accessories for elegant formal nights, exploring ports of call, or just lounging by the pool. Furthermore, your luggage also contains other essentials such as medication, personal identification, travel documentation, electronics, and more.

It can be disconcerting, then, to hand your bags over to a porter at a crowded drop off zone or check-in area long before you are on the ship, knowing that you may not see your luggage again for several hours and it could be changing hands several times.

You may also be nervous that your bags could be sitting in a public hallway next to your stateroom door while you’re enjoying lunch or out exploring the ship. How can you protect your luggage and ensure your valuables are always safe?

Keep Your Luggage With You

The easiest way to protect your luggage from loss or theft on a cruise is to be sure it stays with you until you can safely lock it in your cabin. Most cruise lines allow passengers to carry their own bags onto the ship. There will be no porters to assist with manhandling bags up and down narrow hallways and multiple stairways, however, and elevators may not be available as the crew completes embarkation day tasks.

Take a look at all the luggage on Amazon which is perfect for your cruise.

Furthermore, bags must fit through the port’s security screening equipment. The scanners are similar to those at airports so most bags will have no difficulty, but very oversized or awkward bags may not be able to be carried onto the ship.

Once onboard, passengers may not have access to their cabins immediately and must be prepared to keep their bags with them until they can get into their staterooms.

Passengers with suites or other priority reservations may be able to get to their cabins right away, such as with Carnival’s Faster to the Fun program, but passengers without those privileges must tote their bags along to the lunch buffet or find a convenient waiting spot until they can enter their cabin.

Most cabins will be open to guests no later than 1:30 or 2 p.m. on embarkation day, so passengers arriving later in the day can go to their cabins with their bags right away.

Pack Light

It is essential to pack light to protect your luggage. Not only will this make it easier if you are carrying your bags with you, but minimizing valuables in your bag will ensure there is less to worry about if you do turn your luggage over to someone else.

Cruise ship staterooms, while efficiently laid out, are often short on storage space, and fewer bags will be easier to tuck into narrow closets or under beds to keep them out of the way during your cruise.

Carefully consider everything you pack. Instead of your most expensive jewelry, for example, consider choosing costume pieces that will still look fabulous in your formal portraits.

Trim down the electronics you bring as well – you might use your phone, tablet, and laptop frequently at home, but will you really use them during the cruise, when the itinerary is filled with exciting ports of call and fun activities? If you pack fewer valuables, you won’t worry as much if your bags are out of your control at any time.

Pack Protectively

When you do need to pack valuables in your luggage, pack them so they will still be protected. First and foremost, put as many valuables as possible in a smaller bag that you can carry on to the ship yourself, even if you will turn larger bags over to porters. Expensive jewelry, travel documentation, medication, and other irreplaceable items should always be in your carry-on bags.

Check all of these carry-on bags from Amazon.

If larger valuables need to be in bags you may turn over to others, tuck those items deep into the bag and never put them in exterior pockets that can be quickly ransacked. Fold clothes around the items to cushion and conceal them, and take note of what valuables may have been packed in which bags just in case something is disturbed.

Lock It Up

Simple locks can help keep your luggage safe, especially if you turn bags over to porters as you board the ship. Opt for TSA-approved locks that will be suitable for airline use as well, and you can be confident your bags are safe for all your travel plans.

Take a look at TSA-Approved locks for Cruise Ship Luggage on Amazon.

If you prefer not to lock your bags, however, or if locks are cut off for security screening, you can still secure zippers using a twist-tie or a bit of string to knot around the zipper pulls and keep them closed.

Anyone seeking to invade luggage will be looking for fast, easy access, and even a simple, low-tech solution like a piece of string can help discourage snooping and theft.

Make Your Bags Distinctive

Many times luggage that has been tampered with or gone missing is not, in fact, theft or any malicious act, but simply mistaken identity. There are hundreds, even thousands, of pieces of luggage loaded onto every cruise ship, and a great many of them are black, navy blue, or other popular colors with very similar sizes and shapes.

By making your bag distinctive, it’s less likely to be mistaken for another passenger’s luggage and accidentally be opened or shuffled through. Use colorful wraps around the handles or body of the bag, tabs on the zipper pulls, bold luggage tags, or even patches or stickers on the sides of the luggage to help it stand out so there are no errors.

These bursts of distinctive color can also help you describe your bag to ship’s security if it is missing.

All accessories to keep your luggage secure can be found here.

Label, Label, Label

If you do hand your luggage over to porters to have it delivered to your stateroom, it is possible that the bag may accidentally end up in the wrong location. Use the cruise ship’s luggage tags and place them firmly around handles for easy identification.

Use bold permanent markers to write your name and cabin number on the luggage tags in clear, block printing so there is no mistaking the designated deck or cabin number.

You can also get good Luggage Tags from Amazon right here.

It is possible that the tags may loosen or be lost, however, so place a spare tag inside the bag in case it is misdirected. During the evening of embarkation day, if all your bags have not been delivered, notify the guest services desk with a description of your bag so it can be located and returned quickly.

It can be worrisome to turn your luggage over for hours just as you leave on your cruise vacation. By taking simple steps to protect your bags, however, you don’t have to worry about your valuables and you’ll be ready to enjoy every minute of your cruise with all your luggage intact.
