Carnival Releases Further Update on Ships Affected By Hurricane Milton

Since forming as a tropical storm on October 5, 2024, Milton is proving to be a storm not to be reckoned with.

Becoming a Category 3 hurricane by October 6, Hurricane Milton rapidly gained strength, becoming a Category 4 the morning of October 7 and then transforming into a Category 5 storm by the afternoon.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 1 pm advisory on October 7, winds are reported at speeds of 175 miles per hour, Hurricane Milton is charting a potentially catastrophic path towards Florida’s Tampa Bay area, just weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated the area.

Milton’s center is expected to reach Florida’s Gulf Coast on October 9 and travel across the state on October 10, with its powerful winds and heavy rains bringing up to 15 inches.

Carnival Cruise Line is closely monitoring five of its ships that are near Hurricane Milton’s path. Here is a look at the affected ships and adjustments being made.

Carnival Paradise

The 70,367-gross-ton Carnival Paradise, capable of accommodating 2,124 passengers, departed from Tampa on October 6, 2024, for a 4-night roundtrip sailing to Cozumel, Mexico. With Hurricane Milton intensifying in the Gulf, the ship is forgoing its planned stop and will instead travel further south to visit Costa Maya, Mexico, on October 8 to steer clear of the storm’s path.

As the hurricane moves closer to Florida, the ship’s scheduled return to Tampa on October 10 remains unclear. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has issued an evacuation order, and it is likely Port Tampa Bay will be closed ahead of the storm.

The ship’s following journey, set to embark on October 10, is also at risk of delay and changes. Carnival is asking guests on this voyage not to proceed to the cruise terminal until receiving a confirmation from the cruise line.

Carnival Elation

With a capacity of 2,130 guests and a gross tonnage of 70,367, Carnival Elation departed from Jacksonville, Florida, on October 5 for a 5-night cruise to the Bahamas. The ship is visiting Nassau on October 7 and will stay on schedule for a call to the private Princess Cays destination on October 8.

However, as Hurricane Milton is expected to be positioned on Florida’s east coast by October 10, the ship’s scheduled return on the same day is at risk.

As with Carnival Paradise, Carnival Cruise Line requests that passengers on Carnival Elation’s October 10 cruise do not proceed to the port until receiving confirmation to do so.

Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Sunrise, a 101,509-gross-ton vessel carrying up to 2,984 guests, is midway through a 5-day itinerary that began in Miami on October 5. Sailing in the Eastern Caribbean, the ship is enjoying a day at the private Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas and will continue to Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos on October 8.

Like Jacksonville, PortMiami’s east coast location could be impacted by the storm’s arrival, the same day the ship is expected to return.

Its following voyage, a 4-night journey to the Bahamas, is slated to depart on October 10 but is also in jeopardy. Guests should await confirmation from Carnival Cruise Line before heading to port.

Carnival Dream

The 130,000-gross-ton Carnival Dream, which departed from Galveston, Texas, on October 5 for an 8-night trip to the Eastern Caribbean, is visiting Key West, Florida, on October 7.

As the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning that extends to the area, the 3,646-passenger ship’s departure time has been moved up from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

Carnival Dream is still scheduled to subsequently visit Freeport, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau, Bahamas, through October 10. Its return to Galveston on October 13 with two sea days remains on track.

Carnival Pride

Carnival Pride, an 88,500-gross-ton ship that accommodated 2,214 passengers, set sail from Baltimore, Maryland, on October 6. The itinerary had guests anticipating two nights in Kings Wharf, Bermuda, beginning at 8 a.m. on October 9 and departing at noon on October 11.

With the storm expected to move northeast into the Atlantic Ocean, Carnival has moved up its arrival to Bermuda and will call from 3 p.m. on October 8 to 1 p.m. on October 10, shortening its stay by six hours.

Carnival’s Christine Duffy to Skydive During Special Forces Voyage

The Special Forces Legacy Initiatives (SFLI) is making history by organizing its first dedicated cruise aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s 71,925-gross-ton Carnival Paradise. The cruise line’s president, Christine Duffy, is even getting in on the action by skydiving during the voyage for hurricane relief.

The 5-day voyage, departing from Port Tampa Bay in Florida, will bring together up to 2,124 veterans, Gold Star families, and special forces alumni, including Green Berets and military personnel from the Korean War to the present day.

The special cruise will take place October 19 through October 24, 2024, sailing roundtrip to the Bahamas, calling on Bimini and Nassau between two sea days.

Alongside the cruise, special events will be held ahead of the ship’s departure, including a special appearance by award-winning actor, musician, and humanitarian Gary Sinise. Sinise will perform a concert for passengers with his Lt. Dan Band in the parking area outside of Terminal 3.

Sinise, renowned for his role as Vietnam War veteran Lt. Dan in the 1994 movie “Forest Gump,” has long advocated for the military community and created a non-profit foundation in his name in 2011.

The foundation supports the needs of military service members, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need.

In addition to the performance, USSOCOM Para-Commandos and members of the Round Canopy Parachute Team honoring the Allied Airborne Forces will conduct a parachute demonstration from Peter O. Knight Airport near Port Tampa Bay.

To support the Gary Sinise Foundation, Carnival Cruise Line’s President Christine Duffy will join the parachuting teams in a skydive from a World War II-era aircraft to raise much-needed funds for hurricane relief efforts through the Gary Sinise Foundation.

“I’ve never jumped from an airplane before, so I think this effort is worth at least $50,000 for the Gary Sinise Foundation and their efforts to support military and first responders assisting with hurricane relief,” Duffy said.

Duffy’s skydive will take place from the Tico Belle, a historic C-47 aircraft that flew during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.

Special Forces Cruise and Hurricane Relief

The chartered Special Forces cruise on Carnival Paradise will also feature several events onboard, including special military movies, presentations, author readings, company photos, and a final-night banquet.

Fundraising efforts on the part of Carnival Cruise Line for the Gary Sinise Foundation will particularly assist families in the Tampa Bay region affected by Hurricane Helene, which made landfall on September 26, 2024, as a Category 4 storm.

Tens of thousands of homes suffered damage from Helene, ranging from minor to major structural harm. In Hillsborough County, for example, 1,700 homes reported major damage, and landmarks like the Safety Harbor Waterfront Park’s pier received significant damage.

As recovery efforts continue, the financial toll of the storm’s damage is expected to reach hundreds of millions, if not billions.

The Tampa Bay area is currently bracing itself for another near-direct hit from Hurricane Milton, which became a Category 5 hurricane on October 7, 2024, drawing strength from the Gulf of Mexico’s warm waters.

The storm is expected to pass through Florida by October 10, leaving Carnival Paradise free to enjoy its scheduled course.

It, along with Carnival Legend, homeports in Port Tampa Bay year-round, and Carnival Cruise Line is keeping a close eye on Hurricane Milton for upcoming voyages.

Firefighter on Vacation Dives in to Rescue Overboard Cruise Passenger

Not all heroes wear capes – some wear swim trunks. Such is the case with Rory Foy, and Irish firefighter and paramedic who dove into action when a cruise ship passenger was in distress recently in Honduras.

As an unidentified cruise ship was docking, a passenger on board fell overboard but Foy was nearby and responded immediately. He jumped into the water, grabbed a life ring that had been tossed toward the person in distress, and swam with it to them to assist.

“Firefighter/Paramedic Rory Foy who is on holiday in Honduras sprang into action after a person fell overboard when a cruise ship was docking in port,” the Dublin Fire Brigade posted on social media on Thursday, October 3.

“Rory, who is a swift water rescue technician took a lifebuoy thrown by a bystander and swam to the person with it. Here’s hoping the rest of the holiday is quieter!”

There has been no definitive confirmation about which ship the incident happened from. It is possible it may have been Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas when the vessel visited Roatan that day as part of a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary that had departed Galveston, Texas on September 29.

Photos of the incident that show Foy in the water show a light blue hull, characteristic of a Royal Caribbean ship, in the background, but there have been no releases from cruise lines.

Furthermore, there is no confirmation of the date when the incident occurred. Royal Caribbean ships visit Honduras often, including Enchantment of the Seas on October 1 as well.

Ships from Carnival Cruise Line are also frequent guests (Carnival Dream was in port on October 2), while vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Princess Cruises are less frequent visitors.

Many commentors are praising Foy’s quick actions and calling for him to be given an official commendation for his heroic behavior.

“Well done Rory, you’re amazing. I hope this is recognized with a bravery award. You absolutely deserve it.”

“Heroes never rake a break, well done that man. Deserves a medal.”

“What a legend. Dublin firefighters are heroes, even while on holiday.”

The guest who fell overboard has not been identified, nor has any information on their condition or the circumstances of the incident been released.

More Heroic Cruise Rescues

While most cruise vacations sail forward without incident, there are occasional eye-popping rescues and life-saving measures that happen onboard, at sea, or in ports of call, no matter how unusual the circumstances or who is in distress.

For example, refugee rescues can be frequent at different times of year, when cruise ships come across small, non-seaworthy boats in distress as those aboard take tremendous risks to seek out a new and better life.

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas was involved in the rescue of six fishermen and a dog in January 2024. The operation occurred during a week-long Western Caribbean sailing.

Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas Rescue
Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas Rescue

Cruise ships don’t even restrict their emergency help to other types of watercraft. In 2019, Regal Princess rescued two people after a plane crash southeast of Grand Turk.

Medical evacuations are another type of rescue regularly handled from cruise ships. While ships will attempt to reach a port to disembark a traveler who needs emergency care, it isn’t always possible and airlifts are occasionally necessary.

Such a harrowing rescue happened in May 2024 when a young man aboard Carnival Venezia required an airlift due to an abdominal emergency, which required a military medical airlift while the ship was more than 400 nautical miles out to sea.

The rescue was successful, and the young man – Aiden Parker – was able to recently reunite via a video call on Good Morning America with the onboard physician – Stephanie Weiss, MD – who made the call that ultimately saved his life.

Carnival Cruise Line has also stepped up to ensure that Parker and Weiss are able to reunite in person.

“I was so touched by the “virtual” reunion that Good Morning America aired today with our Carnival Cruise Line Dr. Stephanie Weiss and Aidan and his mom Angela, that I think we should do a real-life reunion!” said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.

“We reached out to the family and we are going to have them come back and sail with us for an in-person celebration on Carnival Celebration with Dr. Stephanie!”

From refugee rescues as small boats are awash to critical evacuations for medical emergencies, there are always those willing to step and take risks to ensure the safety of all of those around them.

Cruise Hive salutes those heroes who so selflessly take the steps necessary to safeguard everyone, and hopes there will always be those nearby whenever anyone needs help, on land or at sea.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Luggage Storage Concerns

Every cruise guest wants to be sure they pack everything they might need for their voyage, from casual onboard clothes to fun beach wear to elegant evening options. But what should we do with empty luggage when cruise ship cabins are not generally known for their generous size?

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has responded to one guest’s inquiry about the quandary of luggage storage and noted that the cruise line is unable to provide separate storage space.

Worth Reading: Carnival Sailing Plagued by Overboard Luggage and Weather

“On our last cruise (first Carnival cruise for us) we were forced to live out of our suitcases and put them on the couch in our suite. This was on the ship Carnival Vista. It took up too much space. We were disappointed that our cabin steward did not offer to store our suitcases,” the guest explained, noting that another cruise line did offer that service.

“Carnival should offer this too if you want to stay competitive. Sailing on Miracle from Galveston next in a suite again. Is it possible to ask the cabin steward to store empty cases?”

While Heald did not include the name of the other cruise line the guest mentioned that does offer luggage storage, it should be noted that none of the major lines – Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, etc. – regularly offer such a service.

Worth Reading: Royal Caribbean Guest Reunited With Forgotten Luggage

Heald has confirmed that Carnival Cruise Line will also not be able to offer luggage storage.

“Thank you and while I cannot comment about what happens on the [other cruise line], I do know that we do not have the storage space for this, we simply cannot take your suitcases,” Heald confirmed.

Even on a smaller ship with just 2,000 passengers, if every guest has one larger bag and one smaller carry-on size, that would mean 4,000 bags or more to be stored during every sailing, not to mention the added work for crew members to move bags to storage and then re-deliver them prior to debarkation.

“I think it is safe to say most people will store their cases under the bed, right?” Heald asked.

I’m a chronic overpacker myself, and always have plenty of room to store even my largest suitcases under the beds on any class of Carnival ship, from Fantasy to Excel. I typically nest smaller backpacks or bags into the larger bags before shoving them all under the bed.

Some travelers may also choose to store their luggage in the stateroom closets, or opt to “live out of” bags set on couches or chairs, especially for shorter sailings.

Where Do You Store Your Luggage on a Cruise?

Different commenters shared their responses to Heald’s inquiry, offering a variety of solutions, tips, and experiences.

“Oh good grief. My suitcases go under my bed and I have plenty of room in my closet and drawers for my clothes.”

“Mine fit in the closet just fine.”

“Betting that on the other cruise line the cabin attendant put the suitcases under the beds and they didn’t realize it and thought they were stored somewhere.”

“We store ours under the bed. Never had an issue, even with a large, hard covered case. Why live out of the suitcase? Closets for your things, & depending on the size of your suitcases, under the bed or they can go in closet.”

“One time there were 3 of us in a room and we asked to have the 2nd pull down left down to place extra luggage on (I packed way too much that trip).”

Heald also posted a poll asking about luggage storage. More than 15,300 votes agree that storing luggage under the bed is best, while just 2,600 prefer storing bags in the closet or not unpacking at all during a cruise and living out of the suitcases.

Hurricane Milton Forces Celebrity Cruise Ship Itinerary Change

Hurricane Milton, which transformed from a tropical storm into a hurricane on October 6, 2024, is now barreling down on Florida as a Category 4 hurricane today, October 7, and wreaking havoc on cruise itineraries. The latest to update its schedule is Celebrity Cruises.

The cruise line has adjusted the itinerary for the 126,000-gross-ton Celebrity Reflection, which departs on a 4-night voyage today from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades.

Scheduled to travel to Key West for an 8-hour call on October 8, Celebrity Reflection will instead head east, away from Florida, to visit Nassau, Bahamas. The 10-hour call will give passengers more time in port.

It’s following call, at Perfect Day at CocoCay, owned by Royal Caribbean Group, its parent company, is also located in the Bahamas.

The cruise line hopes the new itinerary will keep passengers and the ship away from Milton, expected to hit the west coast of Florida late on October 9 or the early morning hours of October 10.

“Our Captain, along with our Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, has been monitoring active weather along our path, which is preventing us from a safe arrival into Key West, Florida,” Celebrity Cruises announced to guests.

It then apologized for the last-minute change, stating, “Your safety is always our top priority. Being onboard is one of the safest places to be, as we can avoid inclement weather.”

Shore excursions originally planned for Key West will automatically be refunded, with Celebrity Cruises touting the options available in Nassau, from a visit to Junkanoo Beach to a boat ride to Pearl Island and to playing on inflatable water obstacles.

For guests who booked independent tours, the cruise line is offering a complimentary call aboard the 3,046-passenger ship to contact tour operators to cancel.

Celebrity Reflection will spend a day at sea and return to Port Everglades on October 11, 2024.

Hurricane Milton Intensifies

The National Hurricane Center, which first reported Tropical Storm Milton on October 5, 2024, said the now-Hurricane Milton in the Gulf of Mexico is strengthening due to the Gulf’s warm waters, recorded at 85 degrees Fahrenheit. It is currently 735 miles west-southwest of Tampa.

On October 7, the National Weather Service issued a hurricane watch for the Gulf Coast of Florida, extending to the Dry Tortugas, which includes Key West, where Celebrity Reflection was expected to call.

As a Category 4 hurricane, Milton is recording wind speeds of up to 156 miles per hour. If the storm intensifies into a Category 5, wind speeds can exceed 157 miles per hour.

Milton could also bring dangerous storm surges of up to 5 feet and heavy rainfall of up to 15 inches to areas already hard-hit from Hurricane Helene.

That storm, which arrived in Florida on September 12, 2024, as a Category 3, brought storm surges of 7 feet to parts of the state.

As a result of this new storm, Florida’s governor has declared a state of emergency for 35 counties, including Broward County, where Port Everglades is located.

Hurricane Milton’s path is currently taking the storm across the state of Florida, north of the Bahamas, and expected to be in the Atlantic, away from cruise ports, by the wee hours of the morning on October 11, not impacting Celebrity Reflection’s adjusted route.

Unfortunately, guests aboard Celebrity Reflection may still experience some rain during their voyage.

Grandeur of the Seas Sailing Radically Different Cruise Due to Hurricane

As Hurricane Milton continues to strengthen and make a beeline for the Florida peninsula, Royal Caribbean has added one more ship to the list of changed itineraries.

Now, Grandeur of the Seas will be sailing a vastly different itinerary on her Monday, October 7, 2024 departure than guests initially planned to enjoy. The ship will now visit Nassau as the only port rather than two destinations in Mexico.

The cruise line notified booked guests of the change the day before embarkation, shortly before then-tropical-storm Milton was officially upgraded to a hurricane.

Originally, the cruise itinerary was to depart Port Tampa Bay on Monday, October 7 and enjoy a day at sea before visiting Costa Maya on Wednesday, October 9 and Cozumel on Thursday, October 10. Another day at sea would bring the vessel back to her Sunshine State homeport.

“Along with our Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, we’re closely monitoring Tropical Storm Milton, expected to become a powerful hurricane as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico, reaching the west coast of Florida on Wednesday,” the email notification read.

“In order to safely avoid the storm, and its widespread impacts, along with the Captain, we’ve decided to skip our visits to Puerto Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico and we’ll now enjoy a visit to Nassau, Bahamas on Day 4 [October 10] and a Sea Day on Day 3 [October 9].”

Unfortunately, no other alternative ports of call are available, and the other days of the sailing will also be spent at sea. While this will give guests plenty of time to enjoy all the amenities the ship has to offer, travelers will understandably be disappointed at the dramatic change.

The 73,817-gross-ton, Vision class ship is the oldest in the Royal Caribbean fleet. She can welcome 1,992 travelers at double occupancy, or up to 2,440 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Grandeur of the Seas is also home to 760 international crew members.

The ship is homeported from Port Tampa Bay through October, but in November will reposition to Fort Lauderdale to offer Eastern Caribbean and Southern Caribbean itineraries for the winter. In late April 2025, Grandeur of the Seas will return to Tampa at least through mid-April 2026.

This itinerary change is now the fifth Royal Caribbean ship to have confirmed itinerary changes due to the storm. Harmony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Utopia of the Seas all have adjustments as well.

Further ships may yet have itinerary changes as the storm’s track and intensity continue to be refined over the next few days. Any traveler with a cruise booked in the next week in either the Caribbean, Bahamas, or even Bermuda should stay alert for possible adjustments.

Hurricane Milton Update

As of the most recent update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Milton is currently located 805 miles west-southwest of Tampa, moving east or very slightly north-northeast at 7 miles per hour (mph).

Maximum sustained winds have been recorded at 85 mph, putting Milton firmly as a Category 1 hurricane (wind speeds of 74-95 mph). Higher gusts are being noted, and further strengthening is expected.

“Milton is forecast to rapidly intensify during the next couple of days and become a major hurricane on Monday,” Forecaster Blake noted in the most recent public advisory.

Much of Florida has already been put under a state of emergency, with sandbag collection points opening and many schools announcing closures during the week.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, the US Coast Guard put Port Tampa Bay under Condition X-Ray in anticipation of gale force winds within 48 hours. While the port remains fully open at this time, this will change as the storm gets closer.

On Florida’s Atlantic coast, Port Canaveral is also already at Condition X-Ray, as is Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The Port of Jacksonville will be raised to Condition X-Ray at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

PortMiami remains at normal operations at this time, but is monitoring the storm closely. PortMiami is the southernmost of Florida’s cruise homeports and is not currently within the cone of probability for Hurricane Milton, though that could change as forecasts are further updated.

Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for more storm updates as cruise ship itinerary changes and homeport updates are confirmed.

Carnival Ship Itinerary Change, Still Monitoring Milton for Other Ships

While thousands of cruise passengers await word about their upcoming cruises over the next few days as now-Hurricane Milton stays on course for Florida, Carnival Cruise Line has issued its first itinerary change – for a cruise not going anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico.

The change is for the Sunday, October 6, 2024 departure of Carnival Pride, a 7-night Bermuda sailing roundtrip from Baltimore, Maryland.

In anticipation of Hurricane Milton’s course and intensity after crossing the Florida peninsula, Carnival has moved the ship’s visit to Bermuda earlier than originally planned. Guests onboard have been notified via letters delivered to their staterooms.

“Forecasts for the storm show it moving in a generally northeasterly direction, across Florida and into the Atlantic, possibly impacting conditions in Bermuda later this week,” the letter read. “Given this track, we have made the decision to modify our itinerary to visit Bermuda from 3:00 PM, Tuesday, October 8, to 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 10.”

The original itinerary for Carnival Pride was to have the ship visiting King’s Wharf, Bermuda from 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9 through 12 p.m. on Friday, October 11.

The changed itinerary gives guests 46 hours in Bermuda rather than the previously planned 52 hours, a loss of six hours of port time. There are no other ports of call on the sailing, but the shortened visit is necessary to ensure the ship can safely move away from any potential storm impact.

Any shore tours pre-purchased through Carnival Cruise Line will be automatically shifted to the new visit time. If tours cannot be accommodated at the new time, guests will receive individual notifications.

There is no expected impact to the 86,071-gross-ton, Spirit-class ship’s return to Baltimore. Carnival Pride can welcome 2,124 travelers, and is also home to over 900 international crew members.

No Carnival Changes for Florida Homeports

Even while Hurricane Milton continues to strengthen in the western Gulf of Mexico, Carnival Cruise Line has not yet confirmed changes for most vessels at this time.

This news comes as Royal Caribbean has already proactively altered itineraries from multiple homeports facing impacts and Margaritaville at Sea has moved up embarkation for its Tampa-based vessel.

Likewise, Virgin Voyages has also updated guests that there may be changes to Valiant Lady‘s current sailing, though these are not confirmed yet.

Despite having ships sailing from 5 potentially impacted homeports, Carnival Cruise Line is not yet making changes for its cruises. This includes the following departures:

  • Carnival Paradise from Port Tampa Bay – October 6 departure, a 4-night itinerary to Cozumel
  • Carnival Valor from Port New Orleans – October 5 cruise, a 5-night Western Caribbean cruise to Costa Maya and Cozumel
  • Carnival Liberty from Port New Orleans – October 6 sailing, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise with visits to Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel
  • Carnival Elation from Jacksonville – October 5 departure, a 5-night Bahamas cruise to Nassau and Princess Cays
  • Carnival Glory from Port Canaveral – October 7 cruise, a 4-night Bahamas sailing to Bimini and Nassau
  • Carnival Sunrise from PortMiami – October 5 sailing, a 4-night cruise, an Eastern Caribbean itinerary visiting Nassau, Half Moon Cay, and Grand Turk

Guests onboard each ship will be made aware of changes as they are confirmed. Likewise, travelers booked on the next sailings for each ship will be notified if any delays may be necessary.

Additional cruises from Mobile, Galveston, or even Miami might also be impacted in the days to come depending on exact cruise routes and the storm’s eventual track over the next week.

Carnival Cruise Line has urged guests on the potentially impacted itineraries to sign up for text and email alerts to receive notifications as quickly as possible.

“I sincerely hope that you all stay safe and well,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador. “We will, of course, continue to update you.”

Some guests are unhappy at the lack of early notifications, however, considering the storm’s definite impact coming to the Sunshine State. The earlier travelers are aware of changes, the more easily they can adjust their plans to accommodate such changes.

This distress is especially acute following so closely after Hurricane Helene when the cruise line also held off confirmations and notifications until the last minute, leaving many travelers guessing about whether or not their cruise might move forward.

However, the cruise line also has to be sure any alternative ports for the various ships are confirmed, which can be challenging with multiple cruise lines updating similar itineraries throughout the region.

Cruise Hive will report on itinerary changes, delays, and cancellations for all cruise lines as such operational adjustments are confirmed. Safety is always the first priority, and all cruise lines will take whatever steps they feel are necessary to keep their ships, guests, and crew members safe.

Virgin Voyages Warns of Itinerary Changes From Hurricane Milton

With the cruise lines and the US East Coast still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton is on its way – wreaking more havoc and piling on the itinerary changes.

The storm, which formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, October 5, 2024, has quickly intensified and gained Hurricane status – and is likely to impact the next sailing onboard Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady.

The 2,770-guest ship is due to embark on a 5-night Mayan Sol cruise later today, Sunday, October 6, 2024, from her homeport: Florida’s PortMiami.

The itinerary calls for stops at Costa Maya, Mexico, and Bimini Islands, Bahamas, but the adults-only cruise line has advised that this may change.

During today’s check-in and embarkation process, the cruise line has made guests aware that they are considering changes to the itinerary to avoid the path of the intensifying storm.

“Due to Tropical Storm Milton, which you may have seen, we are reviewing our current planned itinerary to avoid the path. Our experienced crew is closely monitoring the situation and reviewing our options at this time,” reads a letter given to the passengers.

While the specific changes have not been announced, the cruise line has promised to provide an update from the captain before departing at 6 p.m. EST and assured guests that crew members would be standing by to assist with the impact of any changes – including booked Shore Things.

“We promise to keep you fully informed, and our Captain will make another announcement prior to sail away about any itinerary changes,” continued the update.

Modern cruise ships – including Valiant Lady, which launched in 2022 – are well equipped to handle rough seas when necessary.

However, re-routing is often still the safer choice, and leads to a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for the guests and crew members onboard.

When Will Hurricane Milton Really Hit?

As Valiant Lady sails away, Hurricane Milton is still relatively far away.

As of the time of this publication, the weather in Miami is cloudy with low winds and a comfortable 79 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a chance of light showers and/or thunderstorms, which isn’t unusual for Florida.

If cruisers weren’t aware that Milton was coming, they probably wouldn’t know anything was amiss.

However, the storm is on its way and is expected to hit the West Coast of the Florida Peninsula on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, potentially as a Category 3 Hurricane.

Hurricane Milton Track
Hurricane Milton Track

As of the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NOAA) on the afternoon of Sunday, October 6, Milton had reached maximum sustained winds of 80 mph – which is a significant jump up from the 60 mph winds earlier in the morning.

Depending on the path of the storm and how things change over the coming days, it’s possible that Valiant Lady’s return to Florida could also be impacted – even though Miami is on the state’s East Coast and the storm is currently expected to make landfall on the West Coast.

It’s possible there will be some overlap between the 110,000-gross ton ship’s return on October 11, 2024, and the storm’s mid-week arrival.

While the Port of Miami is currently open for all operations, the port is under an advisory from the US Coast Guard – as is Port Everglades, Port of Palm Beach, and Port of Ft. Pierce – with gale force winds expected to arrive in the next 72 hours.

“PortMiami is monitoring Tropical Storm #Milton closely. We ask passengers to please check their respective cruise line schedules for updates. PortMiami operations remain normal,” the cruise port updated on X on October 6, 2024.

Depending on wind speeds and Milton’s progression, the Coast Guard may add restrictions or temporarily require the port to cease operations for the safety of all passengers, crew, and vessels.

Coast Guard Executes Back-to-Back Rescues from Cruise Ship

Known for its dramatic and heroic rescues, the U.S. Coast Guard went above and beyond on October 5, 2024, when it rescued two men for two separate incidents on the same ship.

The U.S. Coast Guard conducted consecutive rescue operations from a Princess Cruises ship 50 miles off Cape Kumukahi on Hawaii’s Big Island, safely airlifting two ailing passengers to shore.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received an urgent call from the 113,561-gross-ton Crown Princess on October 4 at 6 p.m.

According to the ship’s personnel, two passengers, a 70-year-old man exhibiting heart attack-like symptoms and an 86-year-old man suffering from internal bleeding, required immediate medical evacuation.

Passengers aboard the ship, repositioning to Sydney, Australia, ahead of its 114-night world cruise, reported the medical emergency on social media, citing that the ship turned around to head back to Hawaii.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point, Honolulu, Hawaii, arrived at the ship at 9 a.m. on October 5. There, they airlifted the 70-year-old man aboard the helicopter and transported him to Hilo Medical Center in Hilo, Hawaii.

A second aircrew followed shortly after to rescue the 86-year-old passenger, who was also flown to Hilo Medical Center. Both passengers are in stable condition.

The Crown Princess had departed from Kahului (Maui) on October 3 and was en route to Moorea, French Polynesia, when the vessel’s medical team first contacted the Coast Guard. After consulting with the duty flight surgeon, the medevac was recommended for both patients.

Following the dramatic rescues, the ship resumed its course to French Polynesia, where it will also visit Papeete, Tahiti, before traveling to various ports of call in New Zealand ahead of its arrival in Sydney on October 26, 2024.

Although back-to-back rescues to the same ship may be uncommon, the U.S. Coast Guard frequently responds to such medical emergencies, especially far from shore where advanced medical care may not be readily available.

On September 23, 2024, an 8-year-old boy aboard Royal Princess faced a severe case of appendicitis while the vessel sailed 20 miles off the coast of Eureka, California.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call from the ship’s medical team during challenging foggy conditions, successfully airlifting the boy to a nearby hospital, where he underwent an emergency appendectomy.

Additionally, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Venezia needed the Coast Guard’s assistance just hours into its August 22, 2024, journey from New York to Bermuda. In that instance, a 56-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a medical center in New Jersey by an NH-65 Dolphin helicopter dispatched for the medical emergency.

Sometimes, the rescues are further at sea, such as in the case of Carnival Sunshine. On April 27, 2024, a 35-year-old crew member was airlifted 160 miles off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, to a hospital after facing a life-threatening medical condition.

Similarly, the Coast Guard evacuated a 35-year-old pregnant woman from Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy 180 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico.

Rescues at sea are not always medically related, however. In some instances, cruise ships have spotted refugees lost at sea and, as required by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, are obligated to aid and will turn to the Coast Guard for assistance.

A notable example occurred when the Coast Guard and Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas helped save 14 Cuban refugees off the coast of Honduras in March 2024.
