Port Everglades Is On a Record-Breaking Path for 2025

0

The cruise sector is booming at Florida’s Port Everglades, with first-quarter results pointing toward a record-breaking 2025.

The port, located in the sun-and-fun destination of Fort Lauderdale, posted robust cruise ship and cruise guest arrivals in its first quarter, which began on October 1, 2024 and ended on December 31, 2024.

Passenger arrivals grew by a very respectable 27%, from 1,064,998 during the same timeframe a year earlier to 1,349,313.

These numbers put the port on track to reach a total of 4.4 million cruise arrivals in 2025 and reflect a roughly 3.3% growth over the 4,010,919 guests who transited the port in fiscal 2024.

The 2024 arrivals total represented a nearly 40% jump from 2023, as the port experienced a recovery from the industry’s pandemic pause.

Also, in the first quarter, cruise ship calls rose 25%, to 235 calls, compared to 188 calls in the same quarter of fiscal 2023.

While we continue to navigate the year ahead, this strong first quarter is a promising indication of smooth sailing for our customers and the broader economy, said Joseph Morris, director and CEO of Port Everglades.

These numbers not only highlight our steady course of growth but also position us to achieve new heights this fiscal year,” Morris added.

The Sunshine State is the cruise industry’s epicenter. Port Everglades is the third-busiest cruise port in the world, based on cruise arrivals, after PortMiami, which is the world’s busiest, and Port Canaveral, the second-busiest.

PortMiami welcomed 8,233,056 million cruise passengers in its 2024 fiscal year, from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

Port Canaveral, on Florida’s popular Space Coast, had briefly edged into the No. 1 spot in 2022, when cruise arrivals reached 4,072,396 — a hair’s breadth more than PortMiami’s 4,022,544.

The increase was short-lived, and PortMiami quickly returned to the top spot as the industry got back on its feet, post-pandemic.

Big Ships Mean Big Business for Port Everglades

Port Everglades reaped benefits from the arrival of Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Sun Princess, which began sailing from the port in early October 2024 — just in time to buoy the first-quarter results.

The 4,300-guest ship had entered service in Europe in February 2024, and deployed to the Florida port for seasonal sailings.

Sun Princess is operating 7- and 14-night Caribbean cruises from Port Everglades through late March 2025, before returning to the Mediterranean.

Her 14-night voyages combine Eastern and Western Caribbean port calls into one itinerary, with visits to Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos; Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; and Roatan, Honduras. The line’s private destination, Princess Cays in the Bahamas, also is a port call.

Disney Cruise Line’s 4,000-guest Disney Dream began homeporting at Port Everglades in 2023, and has proven to be a big draw for families. The ship sails 4- and 5-night Bahamas and Caribbean voyages.

Other major lines with ships based at the growing port include Celebrity Cruises, Crystal, Holland America Line, Silversea Cruises, Viking Cruises, and Royal Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean homeports one of its largest ships at Port Canaveral — Oasis of the Seas. The mega-ship from the popular Oasis class accommodates 5,600 guests, double occupancy, and 6,700 with all berths occupied.

Oasis of the Seas offers 6- and 8-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises through mid-April 2026, when she will deploy to New York.

Her 8-night Southern Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise, for instance, calls at Curacao, Aruba, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island destination in the Bahamas.

Carnival Offers Drink Package Few Cruisers Know About

Carnival Cruise Line’s drink packages are well known – the Cheers! alcoholic package, an all-inclusive package as well as the Bottomless Bubbles soda package. But the cruise line also offers a unique option that many guests want, but few know already exists.

Enjoying a coffee on a private balcony, while strolling around the deck in the morning, or to wake up before an early shore tour is a great morning ritual many cruise travelers enjoy.

A popular request to cruise lines is for a coffee drink package offering some small savings for coffee aficionados. Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, frequently gets such requests.

Worth Reading: Carnival Cruise Line Adds Further Clarification to Drink Perk Change

“This is one of my favorite things to do. Drink coffee and stare out at the sea,” one cruiser recently mentioned to Heald, sharing a photo of her coffee on a balcony.

“When will Carnival offer a coffee package for us coffee lovers?” she asked.

What a lot of cruisers don’t realize is that Carnival Cruise Line already offers a coffee card for the coffee bar and JavaBlue Cafe and their specialty brews.

“Remember for every six coffees you purchase the seventh one is free,” explained Heald. “Make sure you have the card just punched at the coffee shop just for that.”

Unlike other beverage packages, the coffee card does not need to be purchased, but guests do need to ask for it at the onboard cafe and be sure they have it punched with every brew they purchase.

Why Doesn’t Carnival Offer a Full Package With Coffee?

It is interesting that coffee is not automatically included in Carnival Cruise Line’s non-alcoholic beverage package. The Bottomless Bubbles package is the unlimited soda package, and also includes juices. No other non-alcoholic drinks are included, such as coffees, mocktails, milkshakes, or bottled water.

The Cheers! beverage program is described as an “all-inclusive” option and does include “specialty coffees and hot tea served in the main dining rooms, specialty restaurants, and coffee bars.”

Heald has often been asked about an upgraded non-alcoholic drink package that would include more than just soda and juice.

Such a package could include specialty coffee, bottled water, energy drinks, mocktails, milkshakes, and any other drink options that don’t include alcohol.

Unfortunately, such a package will not be forthcoming from Carnival Cruise Line, but guests frequently ask about the possibility.

“Have they ever thought about raising the price of the soda package to include water, tea, coffee, energy drinks?” one guest asked Heald.

Similar questions are submitted to the brand ambassador nearly every week, but his answer is always the same.

“Thank you, well we would have to raise the price because it’s actually more expensive to have a program like this then it is one that contains alcohol,” Heald explained. “That means it’s very difficult to pass the savings on to you. So at the moment there are no plans to do this.”

Depending on the type of coffee guests prefer, free brewed coffee is available at the Lido Marketplace buffet during breakfast.

Limited creamer options are available, but guests can also bring their own favorite creamer onboard so long as it is in small, commercially sealed packages.

Guests who want an even more unique coffee experience on their Carnival cruise might also be interested in coffee shore tours at select destinations.

This gives passengers the chance to visit local coffee farms, see the process whereby the beans are harvested and processed, and even taste delicious local blends.

Coffee tours are available in Puntarenas, Costa Rica and Ocho Rios, Jamaica, depending on the season and the time the individual ship is at the port of call.

Carnival Cruise Line is continually investigating new tour options and additional choices may be available to passengers in the future.

Royal Caribbean Celebrates Milestones for Director and Cruiser

The year is off to an exciting start for some key members of the Royal Caribbean family.

First and foremost, Ken Rush is celebrating 40 years of service with Royal Caribbean. Currently, Rush is working as the Entertainment Director from the corporate offices on land – which seems to be an at least somewhat similar role to the Carnival fleet directors.

But once upon a time, he was a beloved fixture onboard some of the most popular Royal Caribbean ships, including Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas (among others).

On February 5, 2025, former Cruise Director (and current member of the RCI sales team) Mitchell Merucci posted a photo from a surprise party held onboard Icon of the Seas to celebrate Rush’s four decades with the cruise line.

As the world’s current largest ship is currently homeporting in Miami, Florida, the party was likely held on February 1, 2025 – when the ship was most recently in port to disembark its previous sailing and welcome up to 7,600 new passengers onboard.

“Congratulations on 40 years to the OG Cruise Director Ken Rush! Michael Bayley, SVP Entertainment Christi, Miami office, Icon team and the Cruise Directors threw Ken a surprise party this weekend on Icon celebrating 40 years with Royal Caribbean!,” Merucci shared.

The post was extra sentimental for Merucci, as Rush was the person who signed off on Merucci’s own promotion to cruise director back in 2010.

As part of the celebration, Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley also filmed a short video with Rush – joining the popular “we listen but we don’t judge” trend that has been making waves on social media.

In the short clip, the two shared (mostly) harmless confessions about each other in between fits of laughter.

“Sometimes I hide your microphone when you’re about to go on stage just so I don’t have to hear you speak,” Bayley told Rush – with his tone making it clear that the insult was a joke.

“Sometimes, I don’t think people are totally honest with you. Some of your dad jokes suck,” Rush retorted back later, with the duo bursting into laughter.

Watch Rush and Bayley’s funny video and see more of their humorous confessions below:

Super Mario Salcedo Completes 1,000 Cruises

But as Rush celebrates 40 years of successful employment, Royal Caribbean’s most prolific passenger, “Super Mario” Salcedo, has just marked an important milestone of his own with the completion of his 1,000th voyage.

The milestone cruise was an 11-night sailing onboard Explorer of the Seas – with the 4,290-guest ship embarking from Miami, Florida, on January 5, 2025, to destinations throughout Panama and the Southern Caribbean.

“Congratulations to 1,000 CRUISES FOR SUPER MARIO! Started cruising with Royal Caribbean full-time in 1999 and unofficially has over 1,000 cruises with Royal,” Merucci posted on Facebook on January 17, 2025.

With over 20 years of essentially living full-time on cruise ships under his belt, Salcedo has become quite famous among other guests, crew members, and even higher ups like the aforementioned Ken Rush – who joined in on his 1,000th voyage.

Ken Rush and Super Mario Milestones

“Celebrating this week onboard Explorer with all the crew, guests, Captain, [Cruise Director] Aysy and even Ken Rush made the trip to congratulate him,” continued Merucci. “Super Mario is the certified LEGEND!”

Professionally, Salcedo is an international financial planner and has become famous for his “office” on the pool deck – which likely contributes to his reputation as being “the happiest guy in the world.”

Rather than investing in a home at sea on a residential ship like what Villa Vie Residences offers onboard Villa Vie Odyssey, he is instead famous for booking back-to-back cruises.

He estimates that he spends around $101,000 per year to be a full-time passenger – which to him, is worth every penny.

Historic Flagship SS United States Ready to Begin Final Journey

The SS United States, which has been berthed at Pier 82 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 1996, is now just hours away from beginning her final journey in preparation for scuttling as an artificial coral reef off the coast of Destin, Florida.

According to the SS United States Conservancy, which has overseen plans for the aged ocean liner once known as “America’s Flagship,” testing is now complete, plans are in place, and the ship is ready to move.

“After completing comprehensive due diligence involving extensive testing and reporting to local, state, and federal agencies, Okaloosa County has now received final approval from the U.S. Coast Guard to begin moving the SS United States from Pier 82 in South Philadelphia to a docking area in Mobile, Alabama,” the Conservancy confirmed.

The plan – subject to change based on weather or other operational factors – is that the ship will be moved laterally from Pier 82 to Pier 80 on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Tugboats will direct that transfer and will further maneuver the liner down the Delaware River at low tide in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 8, from approximately 3:30-4:30 a.m.

Viewing opportunities from various Philadelphia vantage points will be available on Saturday, as well as a livestream broadcast on the Conservancy’s Facebook page.

Additional viewing opportunities during the ship’s roughly two-week journey from Pennsylvania to Alabama will be announced as available, and will depend on weather, coastal distance, local marine traffic, and other factors.

Online GPS tracking will also follow the ship’s progress as she is relocated down the Atlantic coast, through the Straits of Florida, north through the Gulf of Mexico, and into shipyard facilities in Mobile for the remediation work necessary to prepare the vessel for environmentally responsible scuttling.

The relocation operation had originally been planned for late November 2024. The ship’s journey was delayed due to late-season tropical weather systems that would have made it dangerous, if not impossible, to complete the trip without further damage.

The Fate of the SS United States

The fight to save the SS United States has been ongoing for several years, first as the SS United States Conservancy sought funding and feasible plans for the vessel’s restoration or repurposing as a hotel or mixed-use pier development.

Ultimately, those plans did not come to fruition. When the berth rent for the ship was dramatically increased in 2021, the issue moved to a legal battle that the SS United States Conservancy lost in mediation in June 2024.

After a further extension to ensure adequate planning for the ship’s relocation and final disposition, Okaloosa County, Florida purchased the liner in October 2024, with the intention of making her the world’s largest artificial coral reef.

The reef project will also be accompanied by a land-based museum that will feature artifacts and memorabilia from the ship to showcase her enduring legacy.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the countless supporters, maritime enthusiasts, and all those who have stood by the SS United States throughout the years. Your unwavering dedication, passion, and commitment to preserving her legacy have been truly inspiring,” said Mike Strasbaugh, Chairman of the Conservancy’s Southeast Chapter.

“While this outcome is not what any of us had hoped for, it is the best possible alternative to losing her to the scrapyard. This decision ensures that the Big U will continue to serve a meaningful purpose—one that honors her history while creating a lasting ecological and economic benefit.”

The refurbishment before the ship can become a new reef is expected to take at least a year. The process includes removal of hazardous materials and structural work to ensure the ship will land appropriately on the ocean floor when she is finally sunk.

At this time, there is no confirmed timeline for when the ship may be officially scuttled or when the land-based museum may be opened to bring the ship’s legacy to a new generation.

Carnival’s Response After Passenger’s $411 Phone Bill

In a tale as old as the advent of cell phones, one unfortunate passenger on Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Pride got quite the shock after the voyage was complete.

Seems young love has a firm hold on the passenger’s daughter, who, not bearing to be apart from her boyfriend during the 7-night cruise from Baltimore to the Caribbean, racked up $411 in cell phone charges while sailing the high seas.

“She has made phone calls to her boyfriend in Silver Spring and used data for messaging,” the passenger told Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald.

“One thing I do know is Carnival will not refund these charges because Carnival and my travel agent said there is nothing they will do. John, I hope you will show some compassion and help with at least 50 percent of these charges,” the frustrated passenger pleaded.

Of course, Heald, known for his sarcastic humor, had some things to say about the mishap, including the fact that reimbursement is not possible.

He shared the story on his social media platform as a cautionary tale: “I am sharing this for one reason and that is to please, be careful.”

“The Cruise Directors always make announcements about putting your phones into airplane mode and this will protect you from the charges like this family now have,” Heald wrote before asking passengers whether or not they put their phones into airplane mode when cruising.

Thousands responded, with many sharing their own cell phone mistakes that cost them dearly after a cruise.

“We were traveling with friends and their son was told to switch his phone over. Apparently didn’t listen to them or me,” said one guest. “When they got home, the phone bill was almost $1,000.”

Nearly all of those who responded said they put their phones into airplane mode, and agreed the cruise line is not responsible for refunding the passenger for his daughter’s mistake.

Staying Connected at Sea on Carnival Ships

Carnival Cruise Line has a Wireless Maritime Services (WMS) agreement to allow for advanced roaming networks onboard so guests can make and receive calls and texts at sea.

However, it specifically states, “International roaming charges will be conveniently billed to you by your home mobile carrier. Please contact your mobile carrier for specific rate information.”

In the case of the passenger’s daughter’s bill, Carnival Cruise Line says, “Any questions or issues regarding billing must be handled through your carrier. WMS has no involvement at all with retail charges applied to your monthly bill by your cell phone provider.”

Cruise Hive Boards: $1300 Cell Phone Bill?

For star-crossed teens and anyone needing to stay in touch with loved ones, Wi-Fi services are an option.

Although the Wi-Fi on Carnival Cruise Line’s Wi-Fi plans are not capable of handling cellular calls, it can be used to browse the web, stream movies, and stay connected via social media platforms.

These plans start at $18.70 per person, per day. Had the young lovers DM’ed each other for a week-long voyage, the cost would have been a third of that of the cell phone carrier.

Airplane mode also doesn’t mean passengers cannot stay connected when on cruise. Carnival Cruise Line’s Hub App is a cheap and effective way to stay in touch with family and friends onboard the ship.

The app, which works while in airplane mode, allows guests to make dinner reservations, book shore excursions and spa services, see and plan daily schedules, and order food and beverages, at no cost.

For around $5 per day, Hub users can also chat with others sailing at the same time.

Cayman Islands’ Cruise Expansion Future in Hands of Voters

0

As the cruise industry to the Caribbean continues to surge, the Cayman Islands are looking to capitalize on this growth by finally expanding its berthing facilities to bring in larger cruise ships.

After months of pressure on the island nation’s government, the opportunity to modernize its ports will now be in the hands of voters as a public referendum has been approved to appear on the April 30, 2025, general elections ballot.

“This is exactly the outcome ACT has worked tirelessly to achieve,” said Association for Cruise Tourism (ACT) Executive Program Manager Ellio Soloman.

“It is a major step toward aligning Cayman’s cruise berthing infrastructure with modern standards, and we are proud that our efforts have ensured the voices of Caymanians will be heard on this critical issue,” he continued.

Worth Reading: Cayman Islands Votes Against Expanding Cruise Infrastructure

Since 2020, the Cayman Islands Ports has revealed plans to build two cruise ship piers in George Town harbor at a cost of $150 to $200 million, with some of the funds coming from committed cruise lines who would utilize the port, including Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.

The George Town Port Expansion Project’s two ship piers would have the ability to welcome four ships simultaneously, including large Oasis-class vessels, which currently do not call in the Cayman Islands’ current tender-only port.

Additionally, the project, which would also entrail dredging, reclamation, revetment, and breakwater projects, would add a new cruise terminal, retail space, and a transportation area in hopes of attracting major cruise lines carrying thousands of passengers.

However, the activist group Cruise Port Referendum (CPR) Cayman has been fighting the project, previously securing enough signatures to postpone the project. In 2020, voters also turned down a referendum supporting the new piers.

In September 2024, one of the CPR Cayman’s founders, Michelle Lockwood, told Cayman News Service the new berthing facility “would impact economic opportunities, the way of life on Grand Cayman, and the natural environment for generations to come.”

The decision to put the project back on the ballot gives islanders a chance to have their voices heard, and ACT is confident the vote will be in favor of the expansion.

Said Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism Kenneth Bryan, “This bill is more than just a piece of legislation. It is a promise to our people that their voices are valued in guiding future decisions.”

Cruise Traffic Decline Adds Pressure to New Port

Proponents of the expanded cruise port cite the Cayman Islands’ steady decline in cruise passenger traffic as other nearby nations see record-breaking numbers of arrivals.

Some islanders feel the decline is due to the port’s current infrastructure, with large vessels required to drop anchor offshore and tender passengers 5 minutes to shore.

A Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce spokesperson told Cayman Compass“As cruise lines continue to build larger vessels, they increasingly prefer destinations with fixed piers that offer greater efficiency and safety.”

The spokesperson went on to say the “lack of such infrastructure in the Cayman Islands has disadvantaged the destination, leading to fewer ships choosing to dock here.”

Cayman Islands cruise port saw a peak of 1.8 million passengers in pre-pandemic 2019. However, the number of passengers arriving by cruise ships has dropped year over year.

Passenger arrivals fell to 1.4 million in 2022 and again to 1.2 million in 2023. Last year, arrivals declined to less than 750,000.

Royal Caribbean is a main operator in the Cayman Islands, with Brilliance of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, and Jewel of the Seas currently sailing to George Town.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Horizon, Carnival Sunrise, and Carnival Venezia are also visiting in February 2025.

In fact, the destination, while declining, welcomes most major cruise lines, including Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Radiance of the Seas Hit With an Outbreak, Embarkation Delayed

Following five onboard illness outbreaks reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in January, the first February outbreak has been confirmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas.

The 90,090-gross-ton ship is currently sailing a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, having departed Tampa, Florida on Saturday, February 1. The itinerary includes visits to Cozumel, Roatan, Belize, and Costa Maya, before returning to Tampa on Saturday, February 8.

Guests booked on the ship’s next cruise – an identical 7-night itinerary – have been notified that the ship will be undergoing cleaning and maintenance before embarkation. This work necessitates a delay in arrival appointment windows.

“Prior to boarding, Radiance of the Seas will conduct a routine cleaning and maintenance,” the notification email explained. “During this time, the terminal will not be open for embarkation, and we will experience boarding delays.”

To accommodate the cleaning, arrival times have been shifted by 1-2 hours, depending on the original time guests selected when they checked in for their cruise. Appointments from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. will now be two hours later, from 1-2:30 p.m.

In order to preserve the ship’s departure time, the later arrival appointments are only delayed by 60-90 minutes. If guests are arriving at the ship at 1 p.m., their new arrival time is 2:30 p.m. Guests who chose 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. as their arrival times should now arrive at 3 p.m.

All guests must arrive at the cruise terminal no later than 3 p.m. for check-in, and must be onboard Radiance of the Seas by 3:30 p.m. The ship is scheduled to depart at 4 p.m. and there is no anticipated delay to that departure time.

While the email notification does not specify an illness outbreak, the CDC has received the initial report indicating 89 out of 2,164 guests onboard reporting diarrhea and vomiting. This represents 4.1% of passengers onboard, well over the 3% threshold at which reporting is required.

In addition, 2 of the ship’s 910 crew members (.2%) have also reported similar symptoms.

Since the ship is still sailing, it is possible the reports will continue to come in throughout the voyage. At this time, the cause of the illness has not been determined.

Measures Being Taken Onboard

While Radiance of the Seas is continuing on her cruise without itinerary changes or delays, guests onboard have noted some operational changes to help mitigate any cross-contamination or disease spread.

Worth Reading: Cruise Ship Embarkation Delayed for Deep Cleaning

In the Windjammer Marketplace buffet, for example, crew members are now serving dishes rather than permitting guests to serve themselves with common utensils.

Announcements are being made onboard to remind travelers to be diligent with proper handwashing, and crew members have increased cleaning and sanitation measures. Guests reporting symptoms are being isolated in their staterooms, and specimens are being collected for confirmation testing.

The situation onboard Radiance of the Seas is the sixth reported outbreak thus far in 2025 (not counting three earlier outbreaks at the end of December that extended into early January).

Of the six outbreaks, two have been confirmed as norovirus – Holland America Line’s Volendam as well as Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess. An outbreak aboard Sea Cloud Cruises’ Sea Cloud Spirit is presumed ciguatera from contaminated fish, while an outbreak aboard Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray was determined to be E. coli.

Along with the developing situation aboard Radiance of the Seas, a mid-January outbreak reported aboard Viking Cruises’ Viking Mars also has an as-yet unknown cause.

While norovirus is common and widespread in many areas on land, this number of outbreaks reported on cruise ships so early in the year is unusual.

In 2024, for example, there were just three total outbreaks for all of January and February, while in 2023, there were four reported outbreaks for the first two months of the year.

The History Channel Pact Elevates Cruise Line’s Itineraries

Holland America Line is inviting guests to take a deep dive into the history of destinations its ships visit across the globe, thanks to a new collaboration with the iconic TV brand The History Channel.

Under a three-year partnership unveiled on February 5, 2025, The History Channel will help to curate itineraries and shore excursions that focus on the historical elements of sites included on the line’s cruises.

While additional itineraries will be announced, some samples of voyages currently offering The History Channel’s influence include a 14-day Arctic Journey & Northern Lights, a 7-day Mediterranean Marvels of Pompeii, and a 7-day Norwegian Fjords with Hardangerfjord.

An Arctic Journey & Northern Lights itinerary, for instance, departs Rotterdam on October 17, 2026, and visits several ports in Norway, such as Alesund, Tromso, Trondheim, and Lofoten, crosses the Arctic Circle twice, and calls at the Shetland Islands.

Excursions include the Trondheim Heritage Trail, Traditions of Norway (in Bergen), and A Walk With the Huskies, in Tromso. Another excursion, Stavanger (Norway) Old & New, explores the Norwegian city that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Other shore excursions created with The History Channel will enable guests to learn the historical background of gold panning, the Pyramids of Giza, and other explorations.

Gold panning, for example, already is offered as an activity excursion on some of Holland America Line’s Alaska cruisetours that visit the gold-rush town of Dawson City, in Canada’s Yukon.

Still in the works are itineraries and shore tours that highlight the ancient societies of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Viking cultures of Northern Europe, and the polar discoveries in the Arctic, for instance.

As two iconic brands rooted in storytelling, we are uniquely positioned to bring history to life through custom itineraries and shore excursions, said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America Line

This partnership further differentiates our brand and allows us to deliver to our guests experiences that are too good to hurry through, added Cole.

Excursions are being designed to include exploring key sites that offer insights into the history of destinations, since guest feedback indicates that learning about the places visited on a cruise itinerary rates high on their wish list.

We are thrilled to join with Holland America Line on this groundbreaking, long-term partnership, to have the opportunity to bring the power of The History Channel brand as a whole new dimension to the cruising experience, said David DeSocio, executive vice president of ad sales partnerships at A+E/The HISTORY Channel.

The History Channel is an iconic TV series in A+E Networks, known for documentaries and non-fiction programs.

First Set of Specially Curated Voyages Open For Sale

Cruises that offer the curated experiences have a notation on the Holland America Line website, so that guests can easily identify them when booking. The first set of itineraries featuring The History Channel partnership are open for sale.

Additional cruises and excursions will be added going forward, comprising sailings in 2025, 2026, and 2027. The partnership with The History Channel was the second major announcement from Holland America Line within a week.

In late January 2025, the line unveiled a new series of Legendary Voyages for 2026. The cruises all sail roundtrip from North American ports, requiring no international flights for US cruisers looking to sail on longer cruises of 27 to 45 days. Itineraries include the Mediterranean, Arctic Circle, and the South Pacific, among other destinations.

Carnival Cruise Line President Celebrates 10 Years at the Helm

In February 2015, Carnival Cruise Line appointed a new president following the retirement of Gerry Cahill in November 2014.

Christine Duffy took the helm of the world’s most popular cruise line, and has since become an iconic leader in the travel industry and familiar to millions of cruisers worldwide.

In celebration of the “Duffy Decade,” Carnival Cruise Line has released a fun video highlighting her tremendous influence and amazing accomplishments with cruising. In celebration, she has received plenty of congratulations from crew members, Carnival executives, and cruise guests.

“Today is our President Christine Duffy’s 10th anniversary of being part of your Carnival Cruise Line family,” brand ambassador John Heald shared on Facebook. “During these brilliant 10 years her dedication to making sure your Fun continues has been incomparable. There is no other Cruise Line President like Christine… There just isn’t.”

In 10 years, Duffy has amassed phenomenally impressive numbers, including presiding over 13,500 cruise sailings for 42.5 million Carnival cruise fans.

Duffy herself has made 253 ship visits across the fleet, and over 10 years, nine new ships have debuted under her leadership – from Carnival Vista in 2016 to Carnival Firenze in 2024.

Older Carnival ships have also received great attention during Duffy’s 10 years, with 70 dry dock updates, repairs, and refurbishments.

Every ship, old and new, has also been home to remarkable crew members. Including shoreside positions, Duffy has seen 15,780 team members join Carnival Cruise Line, with the company receiving numerous recognitions as a great place to work.

This includes being on Forbes’ “Best Global Employers” list for multiple years as well as different recognitions for diversity in the workplace and LGBTQ+ equality, one of the Best Companies for Latinos by Latino Leaders Magazine, and being one of America’s Best Employers for Women.

Duffy herself has earned several prestigious recognitions for her leadership, including being named to the CLIA Hall of Fame, receiving the Broadway Dreams Founders Award, and being part of the Forbes 50 Over 50 list.

Some of Duffy’s most important and impressive accomplishments, however, include her fierce dedication to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which Carnival Cruise Line has supported since 2010. Duffy was named the St. Jude Corporate Partner of the Year in 2018 in recognition of her work to support the charity.

Duffy and Carnival Cruise Line have also offered fundraising efforts to different charities over the last 10 years, including Operation Homefront and various veteran-related organizations.

As Carnival Cruise Line offers amazing vacations to more servicemen and women than any other cruise line, supporting veterans’ charities is a natural choice for the cruise line.

One of Duffy’s most unique and adrenaline-inducing fundraising efforts was to support the Gary Sinise Foundation in October 2024, when she engaged in a tandem skydive over Tampa Bay. Ultimately, more than $85,000 was raised to support recovery operations following hurricanes Helene and Milton.

What’s Next for Duffy?

Christine Duffy came to Carnival Cruise Line following her service as the CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and leading Maritz Travel Company, the world’s top corporate meeting, events, and incentive travel company.

She shows no signs of slowing, and is sure to continue leading Carnival Cruise Line to even more popularity with the opening of Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island in July, as well the upcoming debut of two new Excel-class ships in 2027 and 2028.

In the meantime, Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounterbeing rebranded from P&O Cruises Australia – are slated to join the Carnival fleet over the next few weeks, expanding the cruise line’s iconic presence Down Under.

Undoubtedly, there will be more coming up for Carnival Cruise Line and Christine Duffy, from new ships to new itineraries to inaugural port visits to amazing new opportunities for team members and cruise fans alike.
