Several days before Royal Caribbean International’s newest Oasis-class ship, Utopia of the Seas, welcomes her first guests onboard, some travelers are already being informed of an itinerary change.
Fortunately, the change is for a sailing more than six months from now, giving guests plenty of opportunity to rearrange their plans if desired.
The impacted voyage is the February 3, 2025 sailing, a 4-night cruise on the new ship. The original cruise was to have first visited Nassau, then enjoyed a day at sea, then spent a day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in the Bahamas. Now, booked guests have been informed that the entire itinerary is changed, while the destinations remain the same.
“To provide you with the best experience, we’ve added an additional visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay, and we’re so excited to visit this destination with you twice!”the notification email read.“Additionally, we’ll now visit Nassau, Bahamas, on Day 3, and we’ve added an extra hour for you to explore everything there is to do in this beautiful destination.”
Utopia of the Seas’ new itinerary is now calling on CocoCay both on Tuesday, February 4 and Thursday, February 6. On both days, the ship will be docked at the private island from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The visit to Nassau will now be on Wednesday, February 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., instead of on Tuesday, February 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as originally scheduled.
Any shore tours for either destination that have already been booked through Royal Caribbean International will undoubtedly be shifted to the appropriate day. Guests who may have booked independent excursions, however, will need to contact their tour operators for adjustments as needed.
No details have been provided about why this itinerary change is necessary for the new ship, other than “to provide you with the best experience.”
Scheduling details indicate that on Thursday, February 6—the original day for Utopia of the Seas to visit CocoCay—Adventure of the Seas will also visit the island. On Tuesday, February 4, Utopia of the Seas will be joined by Liberty of the Seas.
Because the ship will have a companion on both days, the extra day will ensure that Utopia of the Seas‘ guests have plenty of time to enjoy all the island has to offer, from the thrilling waterpark to the new adults-only Hideaway Beach, which opened in January 2024.

On Wednesday, February 5, there will be five other ships docked in Nassau with Utopia of the Seas. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty, Carnival Paradise, and Carnival Conquest, as well as Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Gem and MSC Cruises’ MSC Divina are all scheduled for Nassau that day.
In contrast, on Tuesday, February 4 when Utopia of the Seas was to have visited Nassau, only two other ships – Carnival Glory and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Silhouette – are scheduled for Nassau at this time.
Cruise port schedules do tend to be fluid several months ahead of time, however, and it is possible that other minor itinerary changes may impact other ships and cruise lines with respect to Nassau as well as CocoCay.
Experienced cruise guests know that itineraries can always change for a variety of reasons, whether it is just a few days or even hours before sailing or several months ahead of time. Remaining flexible is always important to best enjoy a cruise vacation.
Utopia of the Seas is Royal Caribbean International’s newest vessel, scheduled to debut on her first sailing with guests on Friday, July 19, 2024. The ship is homeported from Port Canaveral, offering the “Ultimate Weekend Getaway” sailings with 3- and 4-night Bahamas itineraries year-round.
The 236,473-gross-ton ship can welcome 5,667 travelers on each sailing at double occupancy, and is the first Oasis-class vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas.
MSC Cruises’ MSC Bellissima was once again honored as Asia’s Best Cruise Ship during the Asia Cruise Forum in Jeju, South Korea.
The award was presented after a thorough evaluation by a judging panel, which assessed the operational performance and customer service reviews of numerous vessels operating within Asia.
MSC Bellissima, with a gross tonnage of 171,598 and a capacity to host 5,655 guests, has become a prominent name in the Asian cruise sector. Since resuming international itineraries in Japan in April 2023, the ship has expanded its operations to China and South Korea.
The Asia Cruise Forum’s panel also considered the cruise ships’ contributions to reviving the cruise industry in Asia after the pandemic in its review.

During the industry event, which took place July 10 to 12, 2024, on South Korea’s “Island of the Gods,” stakeholders from across the cruise sector, including cruise lines, tourism authorities, port representatives, and service providers, discussed trends, challenges, and opportunities within the Asian cruise market, and named the cruise ship the best of the best for a second consecutive year.
Said Oliviero Morelli, president of MSC Cruises for Japan and Korea,“Receiving the title of ‘Asia’s Best Cruise Ship’ at the Asia Cruise Forum is a tremendous honor for MSC Cruises.”
Receiving the award from South Korea’s Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Do-Hyung Kang, Morelli continued, “This recognition strengthens our presence in the local market and underscores our commitment to deliver unparalleled cruise experiences throughout Asia.”
Year-Round Cruising in Asia
MSC Bellissima has been sailing in Japan for 16 seasons and was one of the first ships to return to the market following the pandemic. It was also the first large-capacity cruise ship to dock at Yokohama Port following its 2020 expansion.
In 2023, as it celebrated its 15th summer in Japan, it also launched its first-ever winter season in the island nation, marking a year-round presence that continues into 2025.
Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, said of the event, “We are fulfilling our commitment to bring to the region a modern Asian flagship and we are dedicated to further invest in China and benefit the local economy. We want to push high-quality development of the cruise industry in the region, promote the cultural tourism industry and related home port markets.”
The Meraviglia-class ship remains a flagship in Asia, homeporting this summer in Shanghai; Keelung, Taiwan; and Shenzhen, China.
The ship has spent spring and summer calling in Kagoshima, Kochi, Yokohama, Ishigaki, Miyakojima, Osaka, and Naha, Japan. It also visits Cheju and Busan, South Korea.
The cruise line will keep MSC Bellissima in the area through the end of March 2025 and offers a wide range of amenities and activities for its passengers.
The award-winning vessel boasts a two-deck indoor promenade with an LED dome, the Galleria Bellissima, which is lined with boutiques and restaurants and comes alive with music and entertainment at night.
The ship also provides Broadway-style shows at its London Theatre and extensive family entertainment options, including partnerships with LEGO and Chicco, as well as recreational facilities like a stylish pool area, the MSC Aurea Spa, and the exclusive MSC Yacht Club offering a “ship within a ship” experience.
Additionally, MSC Bellissima offers diverse dining options, from gourmet sushi and teppanyaki at Kaito to Butcher’s Cut, a traditional American steakhouse, and Hola! Tacos & Cantina, a street food-inspired Latin American eatery.
A cruise passenger has shared his drink hacks for smuggling alcohol on cruises, garnering hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok. However, the hack has backfired, and cruise lines have caught on.
In one video posted in early July, TikTokker @imgrindface instructs viewers on how to secretly replace soda cans with alcoholic ones in multipacks without obvious tampering. The method involved meticulously opening the pack with a knife and resealing it using super glue to make it look untouched.
However, cruise staff, who pay attention to social media hacks, have adapted and enhanced their inspections to prevent similar tricks, as one unlucky cruise passenger discovered.
Security staff at one terminal opened a pack of so-called soda cans and found that they had alcohol. They even took the cans out of the packaging for inspections—they know all the tricks!
“Warning!! Cruise hack is NO GOOD, THX TO THIS GUY,” shared the passenger along with the original hack video. “We no longer can bring our own drink.”
Cruise Drinks Hack (Credit: @iamgrindface)
That did not deter @imgrindface from posting another hack on July 14 involving a wine bottle. In the new video, he says, “The soda can hack, they’re up to that. It’s not good no more. Do not sneak the drink in with your sodas; you will get busted.”
In the new video, the cruise hacker says he’s “taking it to the next level.” Using a razor blade to smoothly cut the packaging around the cork of a wine bottle and gently removing the cork so only one side is damaged, @imgrindface empties the bottle of its contents.
He then uses water to illustrate that he would replace the wine with alcohol, resealing the bottle with the undamaged side of the cork, and supergluing the label back onto the bottle.
Early commentators did not seem impressed. One wrote, “Don’t embarrass yourselves! Just buy your drink bands!” Another said, “This clown is gonna mess it up where we can’t bring wine.”
The Risks and Regulations of Alcohol on Cruise Ships
Unfortunately, sneaking alcohol onto a cruise ship can lead to several consequences, starting with the immediate confiscation of the alcohol when caught. Cruise lines may also impose fines or surcharges as penalties. In more severe cases, the guest might be asked to disembark from the ship.
Cruise lines have various methods to detect unauthorized alcohol, including scanning luggage and passengers at embarkation points, room inspections, and crew members trained to notice suspicious behavior. Even alcohol purchased at port must be stored by the ship until the end of the voyage.
Most cruise lines have specific regulations regarding the types and quantities of beverages passengers can bring onboard. For example, Carnival Cruise Line and others under the Carnival Corporation umbrella, including Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, prohibit passengers from bringing hard liquor and beer onboard.
While they allow one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per adult over 21 years old, as do many other major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean International, wines with over 15 percent alcohol by volume, such as port or sherry, are not permitted. Nor are boxed wines.
Cruise lines often offer a variety of beverage packages to cater to different preferences and drinking habits. Royal Caribbean International, for example, has several, including the Deluxe Beverage Package, which includes virtually all alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages ranging from spirits and beers to wines and specialty coffees. Prices for this package generally range from $63 to $89 per person, per day.
Norwegian Cruise Line offers a similar setup with its Premium Beverage Package, which covers cocktails, spirits, wines by the glass, and bottled or draft beer up to $15 and costs about $99 per person, per day.
Contrary to the belief that cruise lines restrict passengers from bringing alcohol so they can profit on the sales, which does contribute to the restrictions, safety is the main priority.
Alcohol consumption needs to be monitored on ships to ensure the safety and security of all passengers, as unregulated alcohol consumption can lead to behavior that might compromise the guest’s safety, as well as the safety of others.
Cruise ships also have to comply with various international and port-specific regulations regarding alcohol. Managing the distribution and consumption on board helps ensure they meet these legal requirements.
Allowing passengers to bring unlimited alcohol could lead to logistical issues, such as the need for increased security checks and potential legal issues, especially if alcohol is provided to minors.
Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald has shared lovely memories of the beloved fitness guru, Richard Simmons, after Simmons’ passing on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
Simmons sailed a total of 30 times with Carnival Cruise Line, offering his quirky and positive brand of fitness fun to everyone aboard.
Simmons’ “Cruise to Lose” vacations were a complete package, not only with signature Carnival fun but also featuring exclusive workout sessions, healthy dining suggestions from Simmons, specially designed swag, and more.
The idea for “Cruise to Lose” came from Simmons and was organized through a travel agency, with hundreds of guests signing up for the first sailing.
“I knew Richard very well. He cruised with his Cruise To Lose guests multiple times during the 90s and early 2000s. They loved him,”Heald recalled.“He was their icon. They, well, worshipped him they really did. He was for sure very much part of our Carnival Cruise Line family.”
The exercise-themed cruises – which included itineraries to Mexico, the Eastern Caribbean, and Alaska – featured workout sessions on the lido deck and in the ship’s main theater, with Simmons encouraging and helping guests along the way. Furthermore, guests were encouraged to make friends, and Simmons was always positive with everyone.
“There was a large showroom on the ship. It was like a showroom from Vegas,”Simmons described the Cruise to Lose vacations on his website.“I began their day with a six minute wake-up workout. Then we would all sit and go over that day’s schedule. Breakfast followed. Then into another meeting room to get to know each other.”
Sharing individual stories, struggles, and triumphs was always a part of Simmons’ approach to fitness, and he made personal connections with thousands of people through his long fitness career.
Of course, working out on a cruise ship is different than working out on land – as any cruise traveler who has used an onboard fitness center or jogging track well knows.
“If the weather was a little rocky….the ship would rock and all of us moved along with it. When the ship went left all of us went left. When the ship went right we all flew to the right,”Simmons described.“One lady fell off the stage she laughed and got back on the stage with me.”
Heald fondly remembers the fitness icon as a positive and fun force, and even worked out with Simmons himself – sharing his own unique brand of wit.
“Richard was the same off camera as he was on,”Heald said.“He would chase me down the Promenade deck shouting ‘Johnnnnnny, Johnnnny’ and I would always do the last fitness class with him dressed in a head sweat band and a pair of ill-fitting tight shorts that showed all men are not created equal.”
Simmons and Carnival Cruise Line
Simmons appeared in a 1995 commercial for Carnival Cruise Line to promote his Cruise to Lose voyages, along with Kathy Lee Gifford. Gifford is the official godmother to two Carnival ships: the original Celebration (in service for Carnival Cruise Line from 1987-2008) and Carnival Ecstasy (1991-2022).
“[I’m] having the time of my life!”Simmons said in the commercial, sporting a classic Carnival tank top.“I love this ship!”
Simmons is best known for his infectiously positive and joyous attitude toward exercise and his steadfast encouragement for everyone, no matter what their fitness level, to enjoy exercising. He authored numerous books and audio programs, as well as created his “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” and other popular fitness series.
Simmons was born July 12, 1948, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He had retreated from public life in 2014, but despite significant speculation, simply stated he was fine and living the life he wanted to live. His death at the age of 76 is attributed to natural causes.
Strategically located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, the stunning city of Puerto Plata offers pristine beaches, a vibrant culture, and amenities of all descriptions. For these reasons and more, the city has become a highly popular Caribbean cruise destination.
Puerto Plata welcomes visiting cruise passengers at its Taino Bay Cruise Port. Not only does it act as the gateway to exciting Dominican adventures, but the port itself offers something for everyone.
To help you get the most out of your experience, we will provide an in-depth overview of the port, its facilities, and the numerous attractions that await you beyond its gates!
Taino Bay Cruise Port is conveniently located directly on the edge of the historical center of Puerto Plata, providing visitors with easy access to some of the city’s most popular tourist sites.
Taino Bay Cruise Port was first opened to the public in December of 2021, making it one of the newest cruise ports in the Caribbean. The port’s recently built berths allow it to handle the simultaneous docking of up to three full-sized cruise ships at any given time.
In addition to the port’s impressive docking capabilities, Taino Bay Cruise Port also boasts world-class terminal facilities, enhancing Puerto Plata’s standing as one of the most popular places to visit in all of the Caribbean.

The following are just some of the cruise line that regularly visit the port:
Royal Caribbean International
Norwegian Cruise Line
MSC Cruises
Celebrity Cruises
Virgin Voyages
Disney Cruise Line
Amber Cove Cruise Port
Outside of Puerto Plata, there is also an additional spillover cruise terminal called Amber Cove Cruise Port. While the port technically falls under the umbrella of Puerto Plata Cruise Port, it is located 10 miles away from Taino Bay Cruise Port and the city’s downtown core.
Carnival Ship at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
Amber Cove consists of a single, short pier primarily used by ships owned by the Carnival Corporation. Unlike Taino Bay, which can accommodate up to three cruise ships at a time, a maximum of two ships can dock at Amber Cove.
If you are unsure where your cruise ship will dock, check with your cruise line ahead of time. Although Amber Cove is in a more remote location, it still features exciting amenities, like bars, shops, and an “Aqua Zone.”
Terminal Facilities and Services
Taino Bay Cruise Port was designed to provide visiting cruise passengers with a seamless blend of convenience and Dominican hospitality. With all of the basic facilities you would expect from a modern cruise port and some unique and exciting features, it’s not surprising that the port itself is one of Puerto Plata’s highlights.

For starters, the port features plenty of well-maintained and accessible restrooms. Visitors will also find numerous seating areas inside and outside the terminal building, plus a well-staffed tourist information booth.
Complimentary Wi-Fi is also offered throughout the entire port complex, but you must sign up using an email address and reconnect every hour.
Distance and Transportation Options from the Airport
Puerto Plata’s nearest airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Gregorio Luperon (POP), is located 13.8 miles east of the city. With the airport serving as one of the main entry points for tourists looking to enjoy the city and the Dominican Republic’s many beach resorts, transportation to and from the airport is fairly straightforward.
If you plan to take a cruise listing Puerto Plata as its embarkation and final disembarkation point, you will most likely need to catch a flight to Puerto Plata Airport.

Taxes tend to be the most popular option if you need transportation from the airport to the cruise port and vice versa. Not only will a taxi provide you with a direct route to the port, but all government-registered cabs are required to offer a flat rate from the airport to the city’s most frequented destinations, including Taino Bay Cruise Port.
Uber also operates in Puerto Plata for those who are on a budget. The airport even has a rideshare service line, so you can easily call an Uber for one-way transportation between the airport and the cruise port.
Some of the larger cruise lines even offer complimentary shuttle buses from the airport for cruise itineraries that list Taino Bay Cruise Port as the original embarkation point, but you will have to check with your specific cruise line ahead of time to make sure.
Directions
If you have rented a vehicle and you are planning to drive from the airport to the port yourself, these simple directions will get you there in roughly 30 minutes:
Exit the arrivals area and turn right to head south on Cam. Aeropuerto
Turn onto Sabor a Lena Rd., and continue for 5 miles
Turn onto Av. Circunvalacion Sur., and continue for 5.5 miles
Watch for signs directing you to Taino Bay Cruise Port., then turn onto Muelle Turistico entre Av.
Enter the parking and drop-off area
The entire 13.8-mile journey is fairly straightforward, but make sure you give yourself extra time, as traffic can be a concern as you approach Puerto Plata.

There are also several bars within the port for those looking to enjoy a nice cocktail in the sun. Visitors can enjoy shopping in Taino Village, where they will find everything from small boutiques offering local souvenirs to luxury and duty-free shops offering designer items.
Beach and Sand Bar
Taino Bay Cruise Port even has its own beach, where visiting cruise passengers can take in views of the picturesque coastline. It’s an amazing place to spend a sunny afternoon with complimentary beach chairs, hammocks, loungers, and a beachside bar. Unfortunately, you cannot swim in the waters off the beach, but the beach views are still stunning.
Tuk-Tuk Bikes

Another unique feature of the port is the abundance of complimentary tuk-tuk bikes. These three-wheeled bikes offer quick transportation from the pier to the port entrance, saving time and providing riders with a fun and memorable experience. The rides are free but don’t forget to tip your driver.
Adventure and Entertainment Amenities
For thrill-seekers with limited time in Puerto Plata, the port features an extensive adventure park, complete with a zip-lining and ropeway course, a stage for live shows, and even an interactive monkey zoo called Monkey Island. From petting monkeys to enjoying a poolside beverage, Taino Bay offers much more than your average cruise port experience!
Best of all, the entire port complex was designed to be wheelchair-friendly, so accessibility will not be an issue. While some amenities were not designed for those with mobility issues, the port was not designed to discriminate against those needing assistance.
What Transportation Is Available at Purto Plata?
While you always have the option to walk into Puerto Plata’s historical downtown area from the port, those who prefer the convenience and flexibility of direct transportation have several options:
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic (Photo Credit: Joni Hanebutt / Shutterstock)
Taxis
Government-registered taxis are readily available just outside of the port area. With cabs offering service at all hours, they provide a convenient and affordable way to navigate the city and beyond. Plus, most cab drivers offer flat rates to the main tourist attractions, so you do not have to worry about surprise costs or getting ripped off.
Cab rates are very cheap. An average taxi ride from the port usually costs around 150 to 300 Dominican Pesos, which is roughly $2.50 to $5.00 USD.
Rideshare Vehicles
Rideshares also operate in Puerto Plata, so you can call a vehicle to your exact location. Whether you want a drive to an attraction or a return ride to the port, Uber is a convenient option.
Shuttles and Minibuses
While the city does not offer a free shuttle, numerous privately owned minibuses and shuttles run routes between the city’s central plaza and the port. Fares are roughly USD 2.00, so it is a cheap and straightforward way to get around the city. Most drivers will drop you off anywhere along the route if you ask.
Best Time to Visit Puerto Plata
While personal preference always plays a role when determining the best time to visit anywhere, Puerto Plata’s peak tourist season is between December and April.
The weather is warm and pleasant during these winter and spring months, with daytime highs between 75° and 82°F. If you decide to visit during peak season, you can also expect clear skies and minimal rainfall. Humidity is also lower, making it the ideal time for outdoor enthusiasts.
View of Puerto Plata
On the other hand, the off-season, which spans from June to October, is characterized by regular rainfall and daytime temperatures that reach the mid 90°F mark. Higher humidity and the increased risk of hurricanes and tropical storms also mean that options for outdoor activities tend to be more limited than during the winter and spring months.
With all of that said, you can sometimes score a better deal on a cruise to Puerto Plata if you book during the off-season or shoulder months, so it’s best to weigh up your preferences and budget.
Nearby Beaches
Since the port itself has beach access, you won’t have to go far to enjoy ocean views and sand at your feet.
That said, swimming at the port beachfront is not allowed due to ship traffic, so those planning on enjoying a full beach day experience might want to head to Cosita Rica Beach, which is just 2.5 miles away from the port. The beach is known for its white sand and surfable waves, and numerous cafés and bars border it.

Playa Costambar is another nearby option. Located 3 miles west of the cruise port, it is a quieter beach that offers plenty of options for meals and drinks. You get the same turquoise waters, white sands, and palm trees as the other beaches, but it tends to be far less crowded, making for a more relaxing beach experience.
Distance to Popular Attractions
If you want to go beyond the port, and laying on sandy beaches isn’t your thing, don’t worry; there are still plenty of other things to do within a short distance of where your ship will dock:
Mount Isabel de Torres
Located approximately 1.3 miles from the port, Mount Isabel de Torres is one of the most iconic landmarks in the area. Towering over 2,600 feet above Puerto Plata, this jungle-covered mountain can be ascended via a scenic cable car ride or jungle hike.

Once they’ve summited, visitors can enjoy incredible views of the city and its bordering coast. At the top, you can explore a lush botanical garden and an impressive Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks the city.
Damajagua Waterfalls
If you’re willing to travel farther, the Damajagua Waterfalls are roughly 19 miles from the port. Not only are the 27 unique waterfalls along the Rio Damajagua incredible to see, but visitors can also slide down some of them and swim in their pools.
With numerous tour operators offering shore excursions to and from the falls, they’re definitely worth visiting.
Fortaleza San Felipe
Just under 2 miles from the port, you can find Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress dating to the early 16th century. This former colonial outpost was originally constructed to protect the town against pirate raids.

Today, you can explore the fortress and read about its storied past. The accompanying museum has interactive exhibits that are both educational and fun.

If you are just looking for a casual meal, plenty of food stalls and casual eateries are within the port and in the historical city center. If you are looking for a more formal culinary experience, we recommend the following restaurants:
Restaurant le Papillon is one of the most popular options in the entire city. While the specialty is grilled steak, the menu also features fresh seafood dishes and authentic Dominican side dishes.
Waterfront Playa Alicia is a less formal option that allows guests to eat on the outdoor patio and enjoy waterfront views. With a blend of pasta and authentic Dominican cuisine, it has something for everyone.
Even though it’s 18 miles outside of the city, it’s a perfect option for those hoping to enjoy a quiet day on the beach before enjoying a memorable meal. With Playa Alicia Beach at its doorstep, it’s a true beachside eatery.
No matter where you eat, make sure you try some of the Dominican Republic’s most iconic dishes, including pollo guisado, sancocho, and mangu! They’re easy to find and incredibly delicious.

Carnival Cruise Line has commented on two sides of what is becoming the contentious issue of mobility scooters onboard their ships. In both cases, the answers are not necessarily what the initial commenters may have wanted.
The cruise line’s official Brand Ambassador, John Heald, addressed mobility scooters in his most recent livestream video on his Facebook page, a weekly feature he offers to answer questions and share cruise news. Two different concerns were discussed – elevators and the sheer number of mobility scooters onboard.
The first guest expressed concern over elevator etiquette, which involves mobility scooters and wheelchairs.
Mobility Scooters (Photo Credit: Roy Hinchliffe)
“Why on the new ships, can they not put a wheelchair/mobility scooter/etc. elevator only for those people on mobility scooters or in wheelchairs?”the guest asked.“People do not automatically let us in, and they jump on leaving no room for those on mobility scooters or who have walking challenges [or are in] wheelchairs. This is really a must-have.”
The commenter does not clarify whether they are referring to guests who may have already been waiting for an elevator before a person with a mobility scooter arrived, or if they mean guests who might cut in front of a mobility scooter to get on an elevator more quickly.
Heald responds, noting that most cruisers who see someone in a mobility scooter or wheelchair waiting for an elevator will hold the door and let them in without difficulty, though it is true that not all guests may do so.
To reserve an elevator for mobility devices, it would be necessary to station a crew member on each floor and at each elevator bank to ensure all guests complied with the policy.
“We just don’t have the manpower to take 20 crew members to do that because not everybody would adhere to it if we had a big sign,” Heald explained.“We’d have to have somebody there to manage it.”
It is important to note that using a mobility scooter or wheelchair does not give guests priority access to every elevator, and all travelers – whether they have a scooter, wheelchair, stroller, etc. – should wait their turn appropriately.
Are Scooters Medically Necessary?
The second concern Heald addressed is the sheer number of mobility scooters seen on some Carnival cruises.
“I know I’m going to get a lot of crap for this, but I have to say it. The amount of mobility scooters on your ships is ridiculously gross,”the guest explained, noting that they have been on four Carnival cruises so far this year. “[On] no other cruise line do I see the amount of scooters. Do other cruise lines ask for medical proof before they are allowed on with a mobility scooter?”
This commenter noted that they have witnessed different guests park mobility scooters outside dining rooms and restaurants, then walk to their tables.
“Carnival is empowering and enabling more people to be lazy and it’s plain wrong,”the guest said.“These are not meant for people to bypass walking the ship. They are meant for people who cannot physically walk. Why doesn’t Carnival do something to stop this?”
Heald states unequivocally that Carnival Cruise Line will not be asking for verification or medical documentation about mobility scooter or wheelchair use.
“There is nothing that says you have to tell us,”Heald confirmed.
It should be noted that the cruise line may not even be able to ask for such documentation, which could be a violation of medical privacy laws. Heald does say that there may be a few guests who only use a scooter or wheelchair for convenience rather than medical or physical needs.
“I would like to think that 99% of the people you will see on our ships on a mobility scooter need it because they need it,”he said.
It should be noted that not all mobility issues are consistent. A guest who must use a scooter one day may be feeling well enough the next day not to need such assistance. Furthermore, some travelers may need scooters for longer distances, such as going from one end of the ship to the other, but can easily manage walking a shorter distance, such as to their table in the dining room or to a seat for a show.
Heald does reiterate Carnival Cruise Line’s policy that scooters cannot be parked in corridors and must be able to fit safely into staterooms, which the cruise line has been enforcing much more in recent months.

For one Carnival passenger, the trip of a lifetime has become the fight of her life. Shenae Monique Turner, a 47-year-old woman from Norfolk, Virginia, was enjoying her time on an undisclosed Carnival ship when she began to fall ill on July 7, 2024.
Her initial symptoms included numbness in her lower extremities, chest pains, and difficulty breathing. Eventually, she suffered two seizures and cardiac arrest.
Thanks to quick action taken by Carnival’s onboard medical team, the woman is still alive – and is in a medically induced coma in Florida’s Tampa General Hospital.
Shenae Monique Turner & Demontae Turner
Hopefully, Shenae will be able to make a full recovery. Her adult son, Demontae Turner, told local news outlet Bloom Tampa Bay (part of WFLA) that she has devoted her life to helping others, and still has dreams to accomplish, such as starting an organization that finds homes for animals by placing them with individuals in need.
Thanks to the Carnival Cruise Line team’s efforts and efficiency, the Virginian is now stable in the hospital and may have a chance at overcoming her ailments – although she is still considered to be in critical condition.
Her official diagnosis and related prognosis remain unclear.
This isn’t the first time that Carnival’s quick actions may have saved a life, either.
As recently as May 4, 2024, crew members onboard Carnival Venezia collaborated with the U.S. Coast Guard to successfully complete a long-range airlift mission while the Vista-class vessel was approximately 350 nautical miles off the eastern coast of the United States.
The ailing patient who needed the rescue was successfully transported to a hospital in time to receive proper care.
Ailing Passenger Is Stuck In Tampa
Due to the costs of medical transportation, Shenae is stranded in the hospital in Tampa, Florida – although her son desperately wants to bring her home.
Tampa is approximately 809 miles from her family in Norfolk, Virginia, making this unfortunate situation extra difficult.
According to a GoFundMe campaign started by Demontae, it will cost $33,700 in order to fly his mother back to Norfolk and then transport her to the hospital via ambulance – none of which is covered by insurance.
He’s tried reaching out to organizations like the American Red Cross to secure the necessary funds, but so far has been unsuccessful. So far, the GoFundMe has raised $2,945, which leaves $30,755 to go until the family reaches their goal.

“Think of if it was your mother. Wouldn’t you do everything in your power to save her, to hear her voice, her laugh, to feel the warmth of her hugs and love? She is all that I have and my light in this dark world,” Demontae said in a passionate plea to Bloom Tampa Bay.
“She has impacted countless lives with her vibrant personality and loving nature. Please help me bring her home and surround her with her loved ones,”Demontae continued.
Indeed, special medical transports for severely ill patients can come with a hefty price tag, largely because of the specialized staff and equipment required to ensure the person makes it to their destination safely.
Even earlier this year, a 54-year-old American named Loretta Cox became stranded after she fell ill on her Carnival cruise and had to seek emergency care from a hospital in the Dominican Republic.
According to the family, it would cost approximately $28,000 to bring Cox back to the U.S., with each day in the Caribbean hospital racking up an additional $4,000 that wasn’t covered by insurance.
The Georgia grandmother did eventually make it back to the United States, where her condition was listed as stable.
Who knew a 15-second video clip could be so controversial? One social media influencer, named Naomi Jane Adams (@naomijaneadams) has received some frosty reactions from her followers after posting a short TikTok from a recent expedition to Antarctica onboard an undisclosed Albatros Expeditions ship.
In the clip, Adams can be seen lounging on her private balcony in a makeshift bed she set up outside.
Despite the freezing Antarctic temperatures, where it’s so cold that snow covers the mountains and ice pops up on the ocean’s surface even during the summer, the influencer is posing while only wearing shorts.
“Is somebody gonna match my freak (travel to Antarctica and set up my bed on the ship balcony so I don’t miss any whales, penguins, & seals),”she wrote in black text over the video.
Since its posting on June 25, 2024, the TikTok has racked up 2.3 million views and over 2,100 comments – with most viewers not willing to “match Adams’ freak.”
“Sit out there when you go through Drake’s passage,”joked one commenter, in reference to the notoriously rough seas in the waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands.
“I’m sorry I’d be so scared of rolling off the edge or kicking my blanket off,”wrote another TikToker, who was concerned about safety.
While it’s typically difficult to fall off a cruise shipwithout actively making the decision to jump, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for a blanket or pillow to slip through the gaps between the railings in the balcony – and typically cruise lines have strict rules about throwing anything overboard that can come with hefty fines.
Is A Private Balcony Bed A Good Idea?
While bringing blankets onto a private patio might make it cozier, the idea of setting up a makeshift bed and staying outside for long periods of time in little clothing, especially somewhere as cold as Antarctica, seems questionable at best.
Expeditions to Antarctica can only take place during the summer months in the South Pole, with the cruising season typically lasting from November to March. Even during the warmest time of the year, temperatures still average around 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

For context, anything below 32 degrees Fahrenheit is considered freezing. Staying out in these temperatures could certainly put someone at risk for conditions like Hypothermia – a dangerous medical emergency that occurs when a person’s body temperature becomes either too high or too low.
In extremely cold conditions, hypothermia can take holdin as little as 10 minutesand become lethal in under an hour. Naturally, the freezing temps were on many peoples’ minds in the comments section of the viral TikTok.
“How are you not freezing?” asked one user.
“Are you not like freezing cold?,” questioned another.
Adams did reply to some comments to say that she didn’t feel that cold – and it’s unclear what the temperatures really were when the video was filmed.
So, why did Adams choose to make such a controversial and potentially dangerous decision? According to the TikToker, she was on the lookout for unique wildlife in the region.
While it’s always exciting to come across marine wildlife during a cruise, Antarctica is home to some special creatures that cruisers would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in the world, such as humpback whales, multiple species of penguins, orcas, Antarctic fur seals, minke whales, elephant seals, brown skuas (birds), wandering albatross, and more.
Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to travelers departing on both Carnival Dream and Carnival Jubilee this weekend about an unusual, uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous homeport problem. Due to repairs necessary following the impact of Hurricane Beryl, the Port of Galveston has only limited air conditioning in some of its terminals.
Between the two Carnival cruise ships, this may impact as many as 20,000 or more passengers when both embarking and debarking guests are considered.
Guests are urged to strictly adhere to their arrival appointment windows, otherwise they may be turned away from embarkation and asked to return at the appropriate time.

Carnival Cruise Line has contacted booked guests with updates on the cruise terminal’s condition so they can be prepared during their embarkation.
“The ship will depart tomorrow as scheduled from Terminal 28. Areas of the terminal remain without air conditioning and the temperature may be less than ideal during check-in,”the email sent to Carnival Dream guests read.“To ensure a smooth embarkation, please adhere to your pre-selected terminal arrival appointment. Guests who arrive earlier will be asked to return later.”
The 128,250-gross-ton Carnival Dream will be departing on an 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, visiting Key West as well as Freeport, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau in the Bahamas.
Similar messages have also been sent to guests booked on the 183,521-gross-ton, Excel-class Carnival Jubilee, which will be departing from Terminal 25 for a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary visiting Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.
During the typical check-in and embarkation time frame from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., temperatures in Galveston are expected to be in the mid- to upper-80s or even the low 90s.
This can feel even hotter inside an enclosed terminal with limited air flow, especially for guests coming from northern areas who may be unused to the Texas summer heat and humidity.
While the Port of Galveston has fully reopened for cruise operations, the port administrative offices remain closed at this time “due to storm damage.” While that damage has not been disclosed, the disruption to air conditioning could very likely be the cause of the administrative closure. Meanwhile, repairs are being made as quickly as possible.
“Port staff is working with CenterPoint Energy to restore power today at cruise terminals 25 and 28 to be ready for arrivals of four cruise ships this weekend,”Port of Galveston posted in a social media update.
Other than Carnival Dream and Carnival Jubilee on Saturday, July 13, the other two ships are scheduled for Port of Galveston this weekend. Royal Caribbean International’s Mariner of the Seas also departs on Saturday – though later in the day due to an unrelated delay – and Harmony of the Seas departs on Sunday, July 14.
Both Royal Caribbean ships will depart from Terminal 10, which has been fully operational since Tuesday, July 9. That terminal is not impacted by the air conditioning issues at this time.
Beating the Texas Heat
Most of southeast Texas, including the Houston and Galveston area, has been under frequent heat advisories in recent days with heat index values making the temperature feel significantly higher than recorded highs.
To counteract the heat, cruise travelers should be sure to adhere to their arrival appointment windows for both Carnival Dream and Carnival Jubilee. This will ensure the smallest possible crowds in the cruise terminal, minimizing the time guests may be in hotter-than-desirable conditions.
Wearing light clothing and staying hydrated will also be important for all guests. Furthermore, utilizing porter services can help so guests don’t have to tote their own heavy bags through the terminal. Families should be especially cautious with very young or very senior cruisers who may be more susceptible to overheating.
