Celebrity Cruises Ship Adjusts Itinerary Due to Approaching Typhoon

As Typhoon Shanshan barrels towards Japan, guests aboard the Celebrity Millenium have found their itinerary altered.

The Celebrity Cruises’ 2,138-passenger ship set sail on Monday, August 19, 2024, in good weather. But as the ship makes its 12-night journey around Japan, having already visited Kobe, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, passengers received a notice of an itinerary change once the ship arrived in Jeju, South Korea, on August 27.

“We hope you’re enjoying your time aboard Celebrity Millennium!” the letter from Celebrity began. “Along with our Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, we’ve been closely monitoring the path of Typhoon Shanshan. Like a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, Typhoon Shanshan is expected to be a Category 3 storm when it approaches southern Japan this week.”

As the vessel’s itinerary back to homeport in Tokyo, Japan, on August 31 included calls in Kagoshima and Shimizu in southern Japan, the cruise line has decided to divert the ship to maintain passenger safety.

“In order to safely avoid the typhoon and its impacts, a route taking us north and keeping us far from the storm is best to maintain a safe and comfortable sailing,” the letter continued.

Instead of visiting Kagoshima on August 28 and Shimizu, near Mt. Fuji, on August 30, guests will now spend the 28th and 30th at sea and call at Hakodate, Japan’s third-largest city, on August 29.

Shore excursions booked through Celebrity in Kagoshima and Shimizu have automatically been cancelled and passengers will receive refunds in the form of onboard credit to their SeaPass Account to be used anywhere onboard the ship or for new excursions in Hakodate.

Additionally, any funds remaining at the end of the cruise will be refunded to the credit cards on file.

However, passengers on the 90,940-gross-ton vessel who booked independently will be responsible for the cancellation of shore excursions and will need to work out refunds through the tour providers.

“We apologize for the last-minute change caused by the weather – your safety and well-being are always our highest priority,” said the cruise line

Typhoon Shanshan Approaches Southern Japan

As Typhoon Shanshan advances toward Japan’s southwestern islands, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued warnings about severe weather conditions poised to strike the region.

Currently located about 80 miles west of Amami Island on August 27, the storm is tracking north with powerful winds reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale classifies storms with this wind speed as Category 2.

However, meteorologists predict wind speeds may reach up to 155 miles per hour by August 28, making it a Category 3. The storm is also bringing torrential downpours.

Although air and train transport has been suspended in the area, the Japan Coast Guard has yet to implement no-entry advisories for large vessels or evacuations. If advisories are imposed, they will be announced 24 hours before the storm zone reaches the affected areas.

Passengers onboard Celebrity Millenium have been reassured by the crew. “Please know, being onboard a ship is one of the safest places to be because we are faster and can move out of the way of any inclement weather,” the letter stated.

Like the Atlantic and Caribbean’s hurricane season, typhoon season in Japan typically runs between May and October, with August and September peak season. During these times, passengers may elect to purchase cruise insurance that offers protection from weather-related issues.

Ketchikan Port Calls Continue as Planned After Tragic Landslide

0

Cruise ship calls to the Port of Ketchikan, Alaska, are continuing as planned following the tragic landslide that hit a section of the town on August 25, 2024, killing a local resident and damaging several homes.

While cruise ships do not homeport in Ketchikan, which is situated on the edge of the pristine Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska, the destination is a routine port call on virtually every cruise ship operating Glacier Bay and Inside Passage itineraries.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), with four mega-ships deployed to Alaska for the 2024 season, has not altered any sailings scheduled to call at the popular port.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic landslide that recently took place in Ketchikan, Alaska. Our sincerest thoughts are with the community and all those affected. At this time, there are no changes to our scheduled calls to Ketchikan,Norwegian Cruise Line stated to Cruise Hive

Cruise line officials were in contact with port officials and pledged to provide any necessary updates to booked guests and their travel agents if any changes are made to itineraries. Like NCL, other cruise lines’ ships operating in Alaska appeared to be unaffected by the landslide. A Royal Caribbean statement said no changes were being made to its ship operations in the port.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships deployed to Alaska during summer 2024 include Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian, Encore, Norwegian Sun, and Norwegian Bliss. Royal Caribbean’s ships sailing the region include Radiance of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, and Brilliance of the Seas.

Virtually every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska each summer season, which is quickly winding down. Most cruise lines move their ships to new deployments in September, as fall weather settles into The Last Frontier State.

Carnival Corporation, which operates Carnival Cruise Line Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, stated to Cruise Hive:

Our thoughts are with the people of Ketchikan impacted by the tragic landslide. Ketchikan is a valued partner for our Alaska vacations, and our cruise lines are working directly with the borough government on how we can best help as well as any changes we should make in our planned visits.

The cruise company added,Based on that consultation, there is no change in our scheduled calls. However, it is likely that some planned shore excursions will change or be cancelled, and we are communicating directly with our guests on any changes. All decisions will prioritize the safety of our guests and team members as well assuring we are not impeding any ongoing recovery or repair efforts in Ketchikan.

The week following the landslide is a busy one for cruise tourism in Ketchikan. Ships scheduled to visit on August 28, 2024, include Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth and Norwegian Sun

On August 29, 2024, six ships are set to call, including Norwegian Bliss, Holland America Line’s Eurodam and Koningsdam, and three Princess Cruises’ ships — Discovery Princess, Crown Princess, and Sapphire Princess.

Princess Cruises has a particularly large deployment to Alaska this year, nearly half its fleet, offering 158 departures. Carnival-owned Seabourn is not sailing Alaska until early September.

Landslide Not Expected to Impact Excursions

The mudslide, which followed heavy rain in the area, prompted the evacuation of some 60 homes in the impacted Whitecliff neighborhood, which is situated close to the downtown area. The city posted on its Facebook page that the landslide area is about 1,100 feet long and 250 feet wide at its widest point.

In addition to damaging homes, the slide caused a power outage to the area after debris from the slide downed power poles and lines. Geologists were working to assess the stability of the area before a planned clean-up can begin. Roads around the neighborhood were closed.

None of the landslide’s impacts were expected to alter shore excursions in the town. Many popular excursions feature flight-seeing and sport fishing adventures, plus wildlife cruises on small boats, all of which are outside of the downtown area. Tour buses that transport guests to and from their excursions can navigate around the landslide area.

Some popular excursions offered by Carnival Cruise Line, for instance, include the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show & Crab Feast Lunch; Wilderness Adventure, Crab Feast & Unlimited Drinks; and Historic Wilderness Flightseeing by Seaplane.

The Port of Ketchikan has four Panamax-sized cruise ship berths, which can accommodate ships up to 965 feet long and 106 feet wide. To put the size capacity in context, the world’s largest ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, is 1,198 feet long.

The Ketchikan landslide disaster is not the first to affect Alaska. In November 2023, a slide hit Wrangell, Alaska, also in the Southeast part of the state, killing four people. Other slides happened in Haines, in 2020, and in Sitka, in 2015.

Carnival Cruise Line Updates Onboard Theme Parties

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald has shared the updated list of theme parties across the fleet, giving guests plenty to look forward to for their cruises over the next few months.

Theme parties are often a hit for many travelers, and knowing what parties will be onboard each ship can help guests pack all the right clothes and accessories to join in the fun.

While some classic, favorite parties are found on nearly every one of Carnival’s 27 active ships, the exact party schedule can vary based on homeport, sailing region, overall itinerary, and cruise length. Still, every voyage offers multiple events for Carnival cruisers to enjoy.

“Time to talk about parties,” Heald said. “Party really is just another word for FUN and that is who we always have been and who we are today.”

The new schedule is valid through November 2024, when holiday-themed parties are likely to be added to each ship. Similarly, some ships will have repositioned by that time and will adjust their event schedules accordingly.

The current onboard theme party schedule is as follows:

In addition to these themed parties, most ships also offer the Sail Away Party as each vessel will depart the homeport to begin each new cruise. While the Sail Away Party does not usually feature a specific theme, it can be a great way to begin a Fun Ship cruise vacation.

On ships with special, longer Carnival Journeys sailings, additional parties are often added to the schedule to highlight the unique nature of those voyages. Carnival Pride, for example, is offering a 14-night Greenland itinerary departing September 8, 2024.

In addition to the regular parties onboard, the ship will also have a Throwback Day at Sea, a Pirate Deck Party, and even a 50s Party.

Joining in the Parties

Being a part of these special events and energetic celebrations is a cruise highlight for many passengers. Depending on the ship’s layout, different events take place in the atrium, on the Lido deck (weather permitting), or in the ship’s disco or nightclub.

On Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-class ships – Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee – certain events also take place in Grand Central, where the multi-functional, movable LED screens can add a high-definition backdrop to specialized parties.

Some guests delight in packing special outfits for certain parties, such as their best day-glo, leg warmers, and denim jackets for the 80s Rock and Glow Party or white from head-to-toe for the White Night or White Hot events. While this can be fun, themed outfits are not required and everyone is welcome at each party no matter what they’re wearing.

Exactly when parties are scheduled for each voyage depend on the ship’s exact itinerary as well as weather for outdoor venues. Guests can find the schedule in the Carnival Hub app as well as the printed FunTimes newsletter onboard.

Royal Caribbean Orders Fourth Giant Icon Class Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean Group announced a significant expansion of its Royal Caribbean International cruise line fleet by 2027. Securing a contract with Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku for the construction of a fourth Icon Class ship, the agreement also includes options for fifth and sixth vessels.

Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said, “Building on the incredible momentum and market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas and the excitement for its sister ship, Star of the Seas, coming in 2025, we’re thrilled to join with Meyer Turku once again to expand our roster of Icon Class ships and continue our future growth plans.”

He continued, “Since its debut, Icon has changed the game in vacation experiences and exceeded our expectations in both guest satisfaction and financial performance.”

The initial Icon Class ship, Icon of the Seas, launched January 27, 2024, and became the world’s largest passenger vessel weighing 250,800 gross tons and accommodating up to 5,610 passengers at double capacity, as well as 2,350 crew members.

Homeported in Miami, the ship offers voyages across the Caribbean, including destinations like Roatan, Honduras; Cozumel, Mexico; and Puerto Rico. It also calls regularly at Royal Caribbean’s private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The next ship, Star of the Seas, which will also weigh 250,800 gross tons and carry the same passenger load, is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard.

Scheduled to launch in 2025, it will be slightly bigger than her sister, taking over the position as the world’s largest. It will homeport out of Port Canaveral, Florida, when it embarks on its first voyage on August 31, 2025.

A third unnamed ship is also in the works to debut in 2026, with four Icon Class vessels sailing by 2027. The fourth ship is also unnamed at this time.

Each ship is being sustainably constructed with energy-efficient technologies, including a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cell technology to provide cleaner-burning fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality.

“With Icon of the Seas, our team, consisting of the shipyard and partners, have built an extraordinary ship in respect of naval architecture, energy efficiency, and customer experience,” said Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

The ship and its sisters will also feature a state-of-the-art waste management system to reduce waste production, an advanced water treatment system to purify and reuse wastewater, and an advanced air conditioning system to recycle energy and reduce overall consumption.

Aggressive Expansion and Growth

Icon of the Seas, the first of the Icon Class, spans 20 decks and is notable for its array of amenities and attractions. The AquaDome, for instance, is the largest water park at sea and includes the impressive Crown’s Edge and its thrilling slides and water experiences.

The ship also introduced the Surfside neighborhood, a family-focused area featuring the Splashaway Bay water park.

With the addition of the fourth Icon Class ship, this will be the 21st ship Meyer Turku has built for the Royal Caribbean Group. Finland’s Prime Minister, Peter Orpo, weighed in on the partnership, saying it “will continue to have a positive impact on our employment and economy. Their commitment and investment in Finland speaks volumes about the strength of our maritime cluster and our world class shipyards.”

Royal Caribbean Group, which also owns Silversea Cruises and TUI Cruises, has been expanding in 2024, debuting the 236,473-gross-ton Utopia of the Seas under Royal Caribbean International on July 20, 2024.

The ship, accommodating 5,668 passengers, is operating 3- and 4-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral.

Additionally, Silversea’s 728-passenger Silver Ray and TUI Cruises’ 2,894-guest Mein Schiff 7 were also introduced in May 14 and June 21, 2024, respectively.

The result of its growth has led to record bookings for Royal Caribbean Group, which reported $4.1 billion in revenue in Q2 of 2024. The company anticipates a 68 percent year-over-year increase as excitement builds for its upcoming offerings.

Carnival Vista Speed Issue Not Resolved, Ship Continues to Suffer

The flagship of Carnival’s Vista-class vessels has been delayed by maintenance issues for the third time this month.

Carnival Vista, which is in the middle of operating an 8-night eastern Caribbean sailing, has notified guests of tweaks to the itinerary due to technical difficulties that are impacting cruising speed.

The news comes after the voyage set off with a delayed start due to repairs for related issues – which were supposed to have been fixed prior to heading back out to sea.

“We have been working hard to address an issue that was impacting the ship’s cruising speed. We were hopeful that the issue was resolved but we’re not quite there,” read a letter to guests from the ship’s captain, Francesco Florentino.

While the 3,934-passengers vessel will still visit all the ports of call on the itinerary, guests may not get as much time to explore the destinations as they were expecting.

“We are working on a new plan to make some additional repairs. We will be able to keep the remaining ports of call on our itinerary but will make some modest adjustments to our time in port to allow us to return to Port Canaveral in good time,” continued Captain Florentino’s memo.

The round-trip sailing, which embarked from Port Canaveral, Florida, on August 24, 2024, has already called on Puerto Plata / Amber Cove, Dominican Republic.

The impacted ports of call are San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Instead of staying in San Juan from 10:30 a.m. local time until 6:30 p.m., the 133,596-gross ton vessel won’t arrive until 1:30 p.m. – but will depart an hour later at 7:30 p.m.

Similarly, the ship will dock in St. Maarten one hour later than planned – at 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. – when it arrives the following day.

The final call of the cruise, which is at St. Thomas, will have an on-time arrival, but will see the ship leave an hour early to make it back to the ship’s homeport to disembark as planned on September 1, 2024.

As a show of good faith, the 27-ship cruise line is giving guests a $50 credit per stateroom to use onboard and will automatically adjust shore excursions that were booked directly through Carnival.

Engine Issues Cause Trouble for Carnival Vista

The technical difficulties that the 8-year-old cruise ship has been experiencing are not isolated to her current sailing.

Indeed, the issues manifested at the end of her August 4th sailing, only to then wreak havoc on the subsequent 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage that embarked from Orlando, Florida, on August 10, 2024.

The cruise line worked to address the malfunctioning engines on embarkation day – and began sending out texts advising guests of a revised itinerary as they boarded the ship.

“The ship is experiencing an issue that is affecting its maximum cruising speed. Our engineers are working on a repair plan,” the text notification read at the time. “While we will be able to sail, it is necessary for us to revise our itinerary.”

Aft of Carnival Vista

The original itinerary called for visits to Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Turk, but due to the limitations in cruising speed, the ship instead called on Nassau, Bahamas; Princess Cays, Freeport; and Half Moon Cay, the cruise line’s private island destination in the Bahamas.

The 2016-launched cruise ship returned to Port Canaveral on August 24, 2024 – where it was determined that the current sailing would go ahead as planned, following a minimal delay to allow crews to repair the ship’s propulsion system while in port.

“To accommodate our repair plan, the ship will be arriving very early Sunday morning, August 18, to Port Canaveral (approximately 3:30 AM) to allow for a full day of work with our engineers and technical experts. We are also planning a later departure that evening to maximize the workday,” Carnival informed impacted passengers.

Because the 2016-launched ship would be fixed and the first day of the sailing was meant to be a sea day, the delayed embarkation was not supposed to impact any of the ports of call. Of course, the continuing technical difficulties necessitated another change of plans.

It’s unclear when the issue will finally be fixed and what impact it will have on subsequent sailings, with the next – a 6-night eastern Caribbean itinerary – scheduled to embark on September 1, 2024.

Carnival Vista will continue homeporting at the Orlando-based port, from where she will alternate between 6-8 night southern and eastern Caribbean itineraries out of Port Canaveral through the next year and well into 2026.

Disney Dream Skipping Amsterdam Due to Potential Protests

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) has informed passengers of an itinerary change for Disney Dream’s 7-night sailing starting September 1, 2024. Due to protests at the port in Amsterdam, there is a high likelihood the ship will be unable to pass through the city’s locks.

Consequently, the vessel will now spend an additional day in Zeebrugge, Belgium, and skip the planned call in Amsterdam.

Due to issues outside of our control at the port in Amsterdam, there is a significant possibility that the ship will not be able to dock, resulting in a missed port day,” said DCL in a letter to passengers.

It continued, “Because of this, we have made the decision to modify your sailing and spend the additional day in Zeebrugge.”

The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream is set to depart on its roundtrip journey from Southampton, England on September 1. After a day at sea, the ship will arrive in Hamburg, Germany, on September 2 before three more sea days.

Scheduled to arrive in Amsterdam in the Netherlands on September 6 and Zeebrugge on September 7, the vessel will now arrive in Belgium a day early and enjoy two days at the port before returning to the U.K. on September 8.

In response to the change, Disney is offering each stateroom an onboard credit of $250 for shipboard services during the cruise.

Pre-reserved excursions in Amsterdam have automatically been cancelled and reimbursed to passengers’ original form of payment. Guests who booked their own excursions outside of the Port Adventures app will need to adjust their activities and get refunded on their own.

“We truly apologize for any disappointment with this change but know this revised itinerary will provide guests with the first-class experience they have come to know and expect from Disney Cruise Line,” the cruise line stated.

Ongoing Protests Lead to Port Disruptions

The decision to bypass Amsterdam comes amid ongoing disruptions at the port due to environmental activist protests. In recent weeks, activists from the group Extinction Rebellion have increasingly targeted cruise operations.

For instance, Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas was blocked by protestors in Amsterdam on August 18, 2024. The 2,100-passenger vessel cancelled a call in Bergen, Norway, to get ahead of possible protests and were delayed a full day until police were able to dismantle the blockade.

Cruise Ship Protest

Earlier, on August 10, its sister ship, Jewel of the Seas, accommodating up to 2,500 passengers, was similarly blocked from entering Amsterdam and forced to divert to IJmuiden, 40 minutes away.

Additionally, on August 11, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 700-guest Seven Seas Mariner was delayed over four hours when Extinction Rebellion blocked the entrance to IJmuiden’s port.

As a result, some cruise lines have taken precautionary measures and are skipping Amsterdam altogether, including Ambassador Cruise Line. It diverted its 1,200-passenger Ambition to IJmuiden instead of Amsterdam when it learned of planned protests.

Extinction Rebellion’s direct-action tactics are driven by its claims that the cruise industry significantly harms the environment. This stance is supported by a 2022 report card from Friends of the Earth, an environmental organization addressing ecological issues.

In its report, Disney Dream was given an A- minus in reducing air pollution but a C for sewage treatment. Although the vessel’s final grade was a B-, the cruise line, in general, received a C for calling in cities without shoreside power and its use of fuel.

It did point out, however, that Disney does not utilize scrubbers on its fleet, earning it an A for water quality compliance.

The cruise line has received numerous accolades for its environmental and sustainability programs, and is targeting zero emissions across its fleet by 2030.

Upgraded Princess Cruises WiFi Joins Epic Voyages

Princess Cruises announced its new MedallionNet Max, its high-performance onboard WiFi service set to debut on August 31, 2025, will be available to enhance connectivity for travelers on its four Epic Voyages categories during its 2025-2026 sailings.

“Today’s travelers are increasingly drawn to longer, more immersive experiences, often in remote or bucket-list destinations, without wanting to disconnect from their digital lives,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises.

MedallionNet Max will be available on Princess Cruises’ 2026 World Cruises, which will cover up to 35,000 nautical miles in 26 segments. These cruises will take place on the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess, the 1,970-guest Coral Princess, and the 2,200-passenger Island Princess.

With cruises lasting up to 116 days as the ships visit destinations further afield, including calls across Africa and Australia, MedallionNet Max is hoping to accommodate guests who need to work remotely and stay connected.

Additionally, the service will be offered on the cruise line’s Journeys Far & Away voyages ranging from 11 to 33 days. These itineraries across seven ships, including Discovery Princess and Emerald Princess, will target remote destinations like Antarctica, Greenland, and the South Pacific, where Wi-Fi may be limited.

Immersive Itineraries, lasting 17 to 31 days in areas like Alaska, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe, and Ocean Crossings’ 13- to 24-day transatlantic and transpacific routes, will also benefit from MedallionNet Max.

Immersive voyages will take place on 11 Princess Cruises vessels, including the new Sphere-Class ships like Sun Princess and the brand-new 175,500-gross-ton Star Princess, debuting in September 2025. Meanwhile, nine ships, including Caribbean Princess and Regal Princess, will travel across oceans on 26 different itineraries.

“MedallionNet Max ensures that connectivity is never an issue,” Thornton added. “And when combined with the Princess Premier package, which offers unlimited beverages and specialty dining, it makes longer voyages not only feasible but incredibly rewarding.”

New Satellite Technology Will Enhance 2025-2026 Voyages

MedallionNet, first introduced in 2018, utilized a combination of Medium Earth Orbit and Geostationary Earth Orbit satellites. It is capable of exceeding 100 Mbps for downloads and 60 Mbps for uploads and set a new benchmark when it achieved 2.25 gigabits per second bandwidth on Regal Princess.

Now, utilizing Starlink’s advancements in satellite technology through the Space X internet constellation, MedallionNet Max will provide even faster bandwidth.

“Just like we did when we launched MedallionNet Classic almost seven years ago, Princess continues to ensure guests have access to highest performing connectivity available at industry leading value,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

MedallionNet Max will be included in the Princess Plus and Princess Premier bundles. The Princess Plus package, priced at $60 per day, also includes unlimited beverages, casual dining, desserts, complimentary room service, fitness classes, and crew gratuities.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, the Princess Premier package, available for $80 per day, expands on the Princess Plus offerings. In addition, this package includes premium beverages, specialty dining, and additional perks like spa discounts and exclusive events.

Guests using the standard Princess vacation package will still have the option to purchase MedallionNet Classic for $24.99 per day for a single device or $44.99 per day for a multi-device.

MedallionNet Max will not service just extended journeys. The improved service will be accessible across the Princess Cruises fleet of 16 ships on all sailings during the 2025-2026 winter season and beyond.

Disney Cruise Line Details Maiden Voyage of New Ship

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) has revealed its new ship, Disney Destiny, will embark on its maiden voyage on November 20, 2025, from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The ship will join Disney Dream and Disney Magic in departures from the cruise line’s “Finding Nemo”-themed terminal.

The initial 4-night cruise will include stops at the cruise line’s private destinations in the Bahamas, Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Disney Destiny will then begin to offer a series of 4- and 5-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean. Depending on the length of the cruise, itineraries may visit both DCL private destinations, Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay, and, at minimum, one or the other.

Additional itinerary calls include Nassau, Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico. Again, longer voyages will visit both ports.

Among the ship’s highlights will be the Cask and Cannon pub, inspired by the “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme. In new details revealed about the pub, the venue will feature an extensive selection of rare and specialty rums and custom-brewed beers straight from the barrel.

Surrounded by pirate-themed “artifacts” as décor, guests can expect unique treats, such as libations served from a treasure chest.

The pirate pub coincides with the ship’s Heroes and Villains theme, which will create an immersive experience throughout the ship, from staterooms to dining venues to entertainment offerings.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line.

General bookings for the inaugural season will open on September 12, 2024. Members of DCL’s loyalty Castaway Club will have access to early booking beginning September 6, 2024.

Destiny’s Heroes and Villains Theme

Disney Destiny, a Triton-class vessel that recently completed its float out at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, will span approximately 140,000 gross tons and accommodate around 4,000 passengers at maximum capacity.

The ship will debut a range of new shows and experiences, including “Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King.” This distinctive dining experience will blend dining with theatrical elements to bring Disney’s “The Lion King” to life with live performances of music from the beloved film.

The ship will also feature “Disney Hercules,” a Broadway-style production that reimagines the animated film.

In addition to the Cask and Cannon Pub, guests will be able to imbibe in the stylish De Vil’s piano lounge and The Sanctum lounge. Themed around Disney’s Cruella de Vil and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, respectively, the spaces will feature themed cocktails and an atmosphere representing the popular movies.

Additionally, Disney Destiny will offer a range of Heroes and Villains-inspired staterooms. The new accommodations will feature custom artwork and décor inspired by characters and stories, including Mickey Mouse and Disney Princesses.

The ship will also offer luxurious suites, such as the Superhero Suite, with décor inspired by Marvel superheroes like Black Panther and Spider-Man. For those preferring a more dramatic aesthetic, villain-inspired rooms will feature darker color schemes and décor elements.

Disney Destiny will follow DCL’s Disney Treasure as the cruise line continues to expand from six vessels to nine by the end of 2025. Also being built at Meyer Werft, Disney Treasure is set to launch in December 2024, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

The 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure will round out the trio of themed ships when it launches in Singapore in 2025.

‘Annoying’ Announcements Sparks Response to Carnival Guests

A recent critique from a Carnival Cruise Line passenger has drawn attention to the frequency and content of daily announcements made by cruise directors.

The passenger questioned the necessity of multiple daily announcements, which often detail event schedules and promotions already available through the ship’s app and printed materials.

In the question posed to Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, the guest said, “Do we really need the cruise director coming over the loudspeaker 3 or 4 times each day to READ to us the daily schedule of events?

“Less than 5 percent of the ship listens. We find [the announcements] particularly annoying. [The cruise director] is more of a shill for the shops than a cruise director.”

Heald responded to the criticism, acknowledging that while not all guests find the announcements beneficial, they serve a purpose in engaging passengers and promoting onboard activities.

“Let me step back into my cruise director shoes and chat with you a while about this,” Heald began in his response.

He then clarified that announcements are typically made inside staterooms only for essential information affecting the entire ship. However, with announcements in guest corridors, he acknowledged the challenge of potentially disturbing passengers.

“With speakers in the guest corridors, you may disturb someone who is still asleep at 10:30 a.m. or disturb someone having a nap in the sun, or simply disturb someone who was seeking a little peace and quiet,” he said.

But Heald underscored the role of cruise directors in promoting onboard revenue, which, he argued, is essential for maintaining affordable cruise fares.

“It is the cruise directors’ responsibility to promote the revenue, and it is the onboard revenue that has always been the reason on which Carnival Cruise Line can keep the cost of your cruises the most affordable,” he highlighted.

He also stressed that despite the challenges, it is crucial to disseminate information effectively to keep guests informed about daily activities and offers. He concluded by expressing gratitude to cruise directors for their efforts, remarking, “Thanks then to all our brilliant cruise directors for their announcements and for all they do to bring you so much fun.”

To gauge passenger opinions, Heald followed with a poll on whether the general announcements should be heard inside cabins. The poll, which received 9,410 votes at press time, showed that 57 percent of respondents would like to have cruise director announcements in their cabins.

Types of announcements on cruise ships

Announcements serve a vital role in keeping passengers informed about various aspects of their voyage. Daily program announcements, which include updates on scheduled events, dining options, and entertainment, are typically broadcasted over the public address (PA) system.

Cruise directors use these announcements to keep passengers informed about the day’s activities around the ship. Additionally, they promote various departments, such as shops, the spa, dining venues, and the casino, when special events or promotions are underway.

General updates on weather conditions, itinerary changes, or other important ship-wide notices are also routinely provide via the PA.

When alterations occur, such as changes to the schedule or critical updates about port arrivals and excursion changes, the announcements may be made inside cabins to keep all passengers informed.
