Mykonos Celebrates Record-Breaking Cruise Season

0

Visiting the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea is often a dream come true for cruise ship passengers, and it appears those dreams broke records on the island of Mykonos in 2024.

In its 2024 season, Mykonos saw 768 cruise ship arrivals, bringing over 1.29 million passengers to its shores. The milestone marks an increase from 2023, which recorded 749 ship arrivals and 1.19 million passengers.

Athanasios Kousathanas Megas, president of the Mykonos Port Fund, attributed the success to the port’s strategic planning and collaboration.

“These impressive results showcase the continuous development of Mykonos as a top-tier destination and reflect the effective strategy of the Municipality and Port Fund in managing arrivals and improving services,” he said.

Mykonos’ cruising season typically falls between May and September but saw ships making calls earlier in the year and arriving well after its peak.

Its first visit of the year took place on January 2, when Costa Cruise’s Costa Deliziosa arrived with 2,500 guests, kicking off operations for what island officials anticipated early would be its best season to date.

The last ship to call on the island was Princess Cruises’ 2,200-passenger Island Princess, which arrived on November 25, 2024, during a Grand Adventure voyage in the Mediterranean.

The record-breaking season reflects the island’s ongoing investment, which includes the addition of four new tender berths near the Archaeological Museum, upgrades to its port facilities, and efforts to balance ship arrivals to ease pressure on the island’s infrastructure.

“These interventions are not just technical improvements, but strategic choices that combine the upgrading of the passenger experience with the protection of the natural environment, ensuring the sustainability of the destination the long term,” said Megas.

He added, “Mykonos is more than a Greek destination. It is a global destination. Its visitors do not come only for the natural beauties and the cosmopolitan atmosphere, but also to get to know its authentic identity.”

Cruise Growth Spurs New Tax

Mykonos won’t have much time in rest on its record-breaking year. In 2025, the season has officially been extended to run from February through December, with its first arrival slated to take place on February 15.

That first vessel will be Viking Oceans’ 930-passenger Viking Star, which will return in March, along with Celestyal Cruises.

By April, Crystal Cruises, Marella Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Celebrity Cruises, and Explora Journeys all arrive to the island of just under 11,000 residents.

However, the growing number of passenger arrivals is stirring debate. Greece’s prime minister notes islands are “suffering” from excessive tourism and is considering limiting cruise ships.

As visitor numbers continue to climb, Greece recently approved a new cruise passenger tax in an effort to offset the strain on local infrastructure and services.

Beginning in 2025, passengers disembarking in Mykonos and Santorini, another extremely popular island call, will incur a fee of €20, while those visiting other destinations like Rhodes, Corfu, and Crete will be charged €5.

Megas recognizes the island’s growth needs to be sustainable and said, “We continue to support the need for a balanced increase in passenger fees, along with the planning of new interventions that will further improve the experience of our passengers.”

The Mykonos Port Fund will continue to invest in infrastructure projects to help decongest the port, as well as those that help support the island, such as a new water recycling system at the port that will help reduce water consumption.

Caribbean Port Receives Five Cruise Ships and Shatters One-Day Record

0

December 10, 2024, turned out to be an extraordinary day for the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia.

The nation witnessed the arrival of five cruise ships at two different ports, collectively bringing over 8,000 passengers to St. Lucia – a record one-day high.

The bustling activity saw Oceania Cruises’ 30,277-gross-ton Insignia, Silversea’s 28,258-gross-ton Silver Shadow, Celebrity Cruises’ 91,000-gross-ton Celebrity Summit, and Royal Caribbean’s 137,308-gross-ton Explorer of the Seas calling at Port Castries, the island’s largest port near the capital city of Castries.

The ships carry 10,461 passengers and crew combined.

Meanwhile, the smaller, adult-only Le Champlain, which is just shy of 10,000 gross tons and carries 184 guests, docked at the Port of Soufriere, located on the west coast of the island near the iconic Pitons.

“We are very excited to welcome five vessels to our shores!” said the Government of Saint Lucia on its social media channels. Silver Shadow, Celebrity Summit, Explorer of the Seas, Insignia, and Le Champlain – we wish all passengers and crew a day filled with adventure!”

Saint Lucia Cruise Port’s winter season, which runs from October through April, officially kicked off on October 10, 2024, with the arrivals of the 4,485-passenger Celebrity Summit and Royal Caribbean’s 1,756-guest Rhapsody of the Seas.

The island anticipates 459 cruise calls by the season’s end – nearly double its 264 calls during its 2023-24 season, which brought 614,980 passengers.

Projections suggest this season’s numbers could surpass the 2019 record of 789,176, potentially reaching over 823,132 visitors, including those to the island’s third port, Pigeon Island, on the northwest coast near Gros Islet.

Local media reports island workforce, including taxi drivers, tour guides, and hospitality workers, has experienced a surge in employment opportunities due to the increasing number of cruise calls.

“We are looking forward to a busy and exciting cruise season with a positive outlook for our company and community,” said Lancelot Arnold, general manager of Saint Lucia Cruise Port.

Growth and Expansion on the Horizon

St. Lucia’s rapid growth has spurred upcoming enhancements to its port facilities at Port Castries, which includes the two-berth Pointe Seraphine Cruise Port Terminal and the smaller La Place Carenage Cruise Port Terminal.

Initiated by Global Ports Holding (GPH), which took over port operations in early 2024, and in collaboration with the St. Lucia Air and Seaports Authority, the project will revamp both Port Castries and the Soufriere waterfront at the tune of $135 million.

Work includes the addition of a new cruise berth as well as the expansion of existing berths to accommodate larger cruise ships at Pointe Seraphine, which will contribute to more record-breaking passenger arrivals.

La Place’s terminal will also add two berths and create a new boardwalk to provide easy access to town, which is 20 minutes away.

Additionally, the Vendor’s Arcade in Castries will receive a facelift as the project transforms the retail experience for guests. A new Fisherman’s Village is also planned for Banannes Bay in Castries to offer new spaces for local vendors and artisans.

In Soufriere, development projects include the construction of a new amphitheater and food and beverage areas.

Although GBH did not release a timeline on the project, it expects the improvements will help the port welcome more than 1 million cruise passengers annually when it is complete.

Royal Caribbean Ship Forced to Skip Port for a Third Time

There’s a common phrase that says “third time will be the charm.” Unfortunately, this doesn’t hold true for Symphony of the Seas’ next planned visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico – which will have to be skipped for the third time in a row.

Until work is completed and inspected on Pier 3, the San Juan Cruise Port will unfortunately be unable to welcome a ship as large as the Oasis-class vessel – which weighs in at 228,081-gross tons and is 1,184 feet long.

So far, the 6,680-guest ship has already had to remove the port from its November 17 and December 1 sailings – and now the 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing that is embarking from Miami, Florida, on December 22, 2024, will also be affected.

“We’ve recently been advised by the port authority in San Juan, Puerto Rico, that due to technical issues with the pier and the work that must be done and cleared by the USCG for accepting a ship our size, we’ll have to adjust our itinerary for our sailing,” Royal Caribbean wrote to soon-to-be guests.

“As a result, we’ll skip our visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico and have adjusted the time we’ll depart from Perfect Day at CocoCay. After exploring all options, and to provide you with the best experience, we’ll now enjoy a visit to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas instead,” continued the letter.

The port call on San Juan was supposed to be on Christmas Day, which perhaps makes the change sting a little more for disappointed guests – but passengers will still be able to get off the ship and explore Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

Perhaps even more annoying is that the visit to Perfect Day CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in the Bahamas) will be shortened by one hour on December 23, 2024.

Instead of setting sail at 5 p.m. local time, the mega-ship will instead depart at 4 p.m. to accommodate the new itinerary.

What is Wrong With the San Juan Cruise Port?

The San Juan Cruise Port has three different piers, but only Pier 3 is currently able to accommodate Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis-class ships

But due to ongoing technical issues with the pier – which seem to be related to an unspecified incident with a mooring dolphin – the pier has been out of service pending repairs and inspections from the US Coast Guard.

“As part of its ongoing commitment to passenger safety and efficient cruise operations, San Juan Cruise Port (SJCP) has been working diligently with regulatory agencies to restore service to Pier 3 West, following a recent incident involving a mooring dolphin,” the port said in an update at the end of November.

“San Juan Port’s Pier-3 West remains closed to cruise-ships until further notice pending requested satisfactory assessment studies followed by a Coast Guard on-site inspection of the facility, the United States Coast Guard added.

It’s unclear how long it will be until the pier will be ready to receive Oasis-class ships once again.

That said, members of the cruising community are becoming frustrated with both the cruise port and Royal Caribbean for the extended closure and repeated itinerary changes.

“The GOVERNMENT of San Juan Cruise Port and the Tourism Office simply DO NOT CARE that we continue to be put to shame by all the islands around us, building new terminals in a short time and Puerto Rico cannot even fix a dock, one person, who is presumably a San Juan resident, wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, others complained that Royal Caribbean wasn’t being “straight” with future guests about the situation – alleging that the cruise line is being unfaithful by marketing a cruise to San Juan that isn’t possible and saying it hurts the brands reputation when it communicates poorly.

“The dock has been out of commission for a while. RCCL is hurting their brand by not being up front with the situation,” one person wrote on Reddit.

That said, it’s unclear how much Royal Caribbean has been kept in the loop regarding the status of the cruise port – and most cruise contracts do give cruise lines the flexibility to change the itinerary as needed.

Hopefully, the matter will be resolved before Symphony of the Seas’ next planned visit to San Juan – which is scheduled for January 1, 2025.

Carnival Cruise Crew Make Unique Christmas Decorations from Towels

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas on the Lido deck of Carnival Sunshine!

While Carnival’s housekeeping teams are famous for delighting guests with fun towel animals, the crew members on Carnival Sunshine truly outdid themselves with a Christmas display on the Lido deck

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared a photo of the sizable display on his public Facebook page – which shows Santa steering a life-size reindeer (presumably Rudolph, but with a brown nose), with winter-themed friends like penguins and snowmen at the reindeer’s hooves.

But what makes this festive display especially unique is that the entire thing is made from towels.

“Santa, you do a brilliant job. I mean really fabulous. The joy you bring worldwide. Your leadership is extraordinary and it’s a true pleasure and an absolute privilege to be allowed to accompany you,” Heald quipped, writing from the perspective of Rudolph “the brown-nosed Reindeer.”

All jokes aside, Heald then commended the crew of the Sunshine-class ship with a shoutout.

“And here is Rudolph with Santa on the Carnival Sunshine as made by the outstanding Housekeeping Team,” Heald wrote at the bottom of the post.

It’s unclear if the display was part of a planned event or simply a seasonal surprise – although most Carnival sailings feature at least one morning where guests wake up to a towel animal “zoo” on the Lido deck.

While this display is specific to Carnival Sunshine, it’s possible that more festive towel animals will pop up on other Carnival ships in the coming days – if they haven’t already. In the meantime, the cruise line is making sure its holiday guests have a wonderful Christmas experience fleet-wide in other ways.

By December 8, 2024, every Carnival ship had been decorated for the season – with guests welcomed to add their own personal touch by decorating their cabin doors

On Christmas Day, Carnival cruisers will also be treated to a special Christmas Gala dinner – which includes traditional favorites like honey glazed ham with herbed potatoes, as well as year-round favorites (including specialities from the popular Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse for an additional fee).

Last but not least, Carnival’s holiday sailings will feature some extra-special events, including tree lighting ceremonies, ugly sweater contests, and appearances from seasonal celebrities like Santa Claus and the Grinch.

Christmas Towel Display Sparks Joy

Surprisingly, something as simple as towel animals is often a source of controversy on Heald’s Facebook page – so it’s nice to see the Christmas creation met with an outpouring of positivity.

However, it wasn’t the cuteness of the display that was top-of-mind – but rather the talent of the crew members who created it.

“This is so awesome…the crew is so talented. Thank you for making my day happier,” one person wrote in the comments.

“Awesome! I can’t believe the crew can put together something like this,” another person replied.

A few said the display inspired them to book their own holiday cruise – with some musing that a cruise vacation might make a great Christmas gift for this year as something for their families to look forward to next year.

But while this festive display has been met with much fondness, the end of the year is also a good time to look back on the events – or towel animal controversies – of the previous year.

Most recently, rumors spread that the towel animals were going to be discontinued after cabin attendants were temporarily unable to create new towel creations during a 7-night sailing to Bermuda that was operated by Carnival Venezia

However, the missing towel animals could easily be explained by restrictions from an overnight port call to Bermuda.

“Yesterday I answered a few comments about the Carnival Venezia and her current cruise to Bermuda. She had an overnight stay and this meant that the Bermudian authorities insisted we close our laundry operations for environmental reasons,” Heald explained at the time.

“We of course complied but this meant that because of these restrictions the cabin attendants were not able to make the towel animals for a couple of evenings. And there was much disappointment plus some gnashing of teeth,” the brand ambassador continued.

It’s a rumor that Heald has had to squash more than once – but the towel animals have been present on Carnival’s ships since 1972 and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The brand even has a towel animal elephant, named Ellie the Elephant, as a mascot.

Atlantic Canada Hits Record-Breaking 2024 Cruise Season

0

Cruise ports across Atlantic Canada posted a banner year in 2024, surpassing predictions and setting new records for cruise ship and passenger arrivals.

Calling the cruise season exceptional, the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association (ACCA), pointed to a record 675-plus ship calls and 1 million-plus cruise guests during the April to November timeframe.

The numbers reflect a nearly 30% rise in cruise-tourism, with more than 25 cruise lines sending ships to the region.

The ACCA in spring 2024 had predicted the season would set new records, hosting more than 600 ships. It estimated that cruise guest arrivals would increase by about 10% during the season, which opened on April 6, 2024, with a visit from MSC Cruises’ MSC Poesia.

Atlantic Canada itineraries typically feature a combination of Canadian and New England ports, such as Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine, and Boston, with either Montreal or Quebec City as the turnaround destination in Canada.

The ACCA represents the ports of Halifax, in Nova Scotia’s capital city; Sydney, located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island; Saint John, in New Brunswick; and Corner Brook, located on the west coast of Newfoundland.

This year’s achievements underscore the dedication and teamwork of our ports, industry partners, regional stakeholders, and communities, said Sarah Rumley, executive director of Atlantic Canada Cruise Association

Favourable weather, renowned hospitality, and one-of-a-kind experiences have been key to this success. As we celebrate these accomplishments, we remain committed to fostering a viable and responsible future for the cruise industry in Atlantic Canada, added Rumley.

Several luxury cruise ships that called at one or more Atlantic Canada ports during the 2024 season included Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, Silversea Cruises’ Silver Shadow, Seabourn’s Seabourn Quest, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur.

Other major cruise lines had multiple ships regularly calling at ports in the region, such as Holland America Line’s Volendam and Zuiderdam; and Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Mars, Viking Star, and Viking Polaris

Norwegian Cruise Line had a big presence in Atlantic Canada, with the deployments of Norwegian Star, Prima, Getaway, Pearl, Jade, and Gem.

The ports offer a mix of experiences for cruise guests, with shore excursions that focus on the region’s natural resources, history, and local culture and cuisine.

Seasonal Results Followed a Record-Setting 2023

The exceptional results from 2024 follow the gangbuster season of 2023, which showed a 23% hike in cruise ship visits compared to 2022, when the industry was still emerging from the pandemic suspension.

In 2023, individual ports smashed earlier records. In Sydney, the cruise port saw a whopping 74% spike in cruise passenger visits. The destination is the gateway to Cape Breton Island and has two piers that can accommodate large ships up to 1,184 feet long.

Another port that did remarkably well in 2023 was Corner Brook, which recorded an arrivals increase of 58%. Corner Brook is famous as the home of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Looking ahead, at least one cruise line has plans to expand operations in Atlantic Canada. Holland America Line in 2026 will offer 18 unique itineraries onboard Volendam and Zuiderdam, and add a 28-day Canada/New England/Iceland voyage that will depart on June 20, 2026 and call at seven ports in Iceland.

Both ships will return to the region for the 2025 season as well.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Trivia Prizes – Lame or Luxe?

Trivia contests are a mainstay activity for most cruise lines, offering guests a fun time to show off their nonsensical knowledge and win a silly prize.

Carnival Cruise Line, however, has been called out by a disgruntled traveler over the quality of their prizes – the winner medals as well as the iconic ship-on-a-stick trophies.

One recent guest reached out to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s official Brand Ambassador, offering an alternative for pay-to-play trivia games. Heald addresses hundreds of questions, requests, and inquiries nearly every day through his popular Facebook page.

“Why are the prizes on Carnival ships so lame? A plastic … ship on a stick or a medal so cheap it doesn’t have the name of the boat on it!” the guest asked.

The guest goes on to note that another cruise line offers small bags, pens, and highlighters as trivia prizes. Depending on the ship and trivia type, other prizes that have been offered include hats, zipper pulls, keychains, and other trinkets.

This particular traveler does offer an alternative for Carnival to consider – the idea that guests should pay to participate in trivia contests. The prize pot would then be awarded to the game’s winner.

“If Carnival is so cheap not to give better prizes then charge $5 to enter each trivia game. The prize money goes to the winner,” they suggested.

Heald responded to the guest’s idea on prizes and asked how other travelers feel about a pay-to-play trivia option.

“I think most people want to have fun, free fun at trivia and the prizes we give represent that,” Heald said. “However, I may be wrong. Perhaps it is time to say cheerio to the solid gold plastic ship on a stick. Perhaps people want to pay a cash entry with prize money going to the winner.”

More than 1,500 commenters responded to the idea in just a few hours, with mixed ideas.

Many avid trivia players do like the idea of having the ship’s name on the prize medals, which currently just feature Carnival Cruise Line’s iconic whale tale funnel. The medals have evolved somewhat over the years, but have rarely had ship names.

The ship-on-a-stick trophy, on the other hand, is a very coveted prize that many travelers showcase once they return home. While each trophy is identical in design, they do have individualized nameplates for each vessel in the Carnival fleet, making them even more memorable and collectible.

“These trinkets are prized not by their monetary value but the fun and memories they provide through the years,” one commenter said.

It should be noted that ship-on-a-stick trophies are not often awarded at trivia contests, and smaller prizes are more frequently given away.

Which prizes are offered at which trivia contests depends on each ship’s trivia host, the availability of different prizes, and the popularity of the individual game.

Should Trivia Have an Entry Fee?

As for the idea of pay-to-play for trivia, doing so would likely decrease participation (I love trivia games but would never pay to play, as I am not that good!), as well as increase competitiveness.

Charging for trivia games could also lead to arguments and other problems, such as cheating accusations, making the activity much less enjoyable or even requiring security to be in attendance at each game.

Furthermore, frequent cruisers who may have already attended similar trivia events would have an unfair advantage for future games. This could make pay-for-play events even more difficult to appeal to new travelers.

The same sorts of trivia themes are often played over and over on different cruises, especially onboard the same ship when one Fun Squad member oversees most trivia contests. General knowledge trivia games as well as themes like sports, animals, foods, holidays, weird laws, flags, and other topics are popular choices.

Favorite television shows and movies are also popular trivia games, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Friends, The Office, Star Wars, The Simpsons, and more.

Disney Sets Time Limit for Haunted Venue on Newest Cruise Ship

Disney’s Imagineers have a knack for creating immersive spaces that captivate guests, and it appears the new Haunted Mansion Parlor aboard the Disney Treasure is no exception.

With its dim lighting, eerie décor, and vintage-inspired touches that create a bar themed around Disneyland and Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, the venue has already attracted an enthusiastic following before the new Disney Cruise Line ship even sets sail.

Although Disney Treasure’s inaugural cruise will depart on December 21, 2024, the 140,000-gross-ton vessel has been making the rounds with media and travel advisors alike sharing their awe and photos.

And some early visits have revealed the cruise line has set a 45-minute time limit for guests to enjoy the Haunted Mansion Parlor, which is expected to continue into its first official cruise and winter season in the Caribbean.

A sign displayed outside the bar during a recent media review reads, “Attention Mortals! The Ghost Captain requests all seatings are limited to a maximum of 45 minutes. Thank you.”

The 45-minute limit also coincides with the amount of time Cast Members recommend spending in the lounge to seek out its hidden treasures. Like many of Disney’s attractions, the lounge features a theatrical experience complete with music that lasts 30 minutes before starting again.

Although some of the lounge’s features will repeat, like the singing of Grim Grinning Ghosts by different characters spaced out across the décor, the lounge is also set up to provide unique experiences from different angles so that passengers enjoying the 7-day voyage will find new tricks and treats with each visit.

It’s uncertain if the time limit will be permanent or subject to change as Disney Cruise Line evaluates operations, but with 4,000 passengers sailing each voyage, it makes sense to give as many people a chance to witness the show as possible.

A Ghostly Toast to a Wicked New Lounge

The Haunted Mansion Parlor is one of the Disney Treasure’s signature venues with an immersive atmosphere. Truly resembling the attraction, the lounge is filled with spider webs covering ghoulish framed photographs hanging on wallpaper that, upon closer inspection, features Disney’s classic easter eggs.

Behind the bar is a mirror where one may do a double take after spotting ghosts – the same set of hitchhiking ghosts that join passengers at the end of the ride. (For the record, their names are Ezra Beane, Professor Phineas Plump, and Gus.)

Leather and plush velvet furniture are awash in hues that look purple beneath the dimmed lighting, while those familiar with the ride will also spot homages to the original attraction that debuted at Disneyland in 1969, including animated “marble” busts.

Guests at the lounge will find a bar menu complete with themed cocktails like Happily Never After (vodka, Chambord, lemon, apple and black cherry) and Final Vow (mezcal, Amaretto, strawberry, mango, lime, and hot sauce).

Disney Treasure Haunted Mansion Parlor

Some drinks are served in collectible ceramic mugs, which have already generated buzz among Disney fans, and even “spirit-free potions” come in branded bottles guests will covet, like Creepy Crawly Cola and Grim Grinning Grape.

Beyond the Haunted Mansion Parlor, passengers on Disney Treasure will also find the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-inspired Periscope Pub, the Jungle Cruise-inspired Skipper Society lounge, The Aristocats-themed Scat Cat Lounge, the Beauty and the Beast-inspired The Rose high-end lounge, the Mulan-themed Jade Cricket Café and the Moana-themed HeiHei Café.

While each space received “oohs” and “aahs,” it was the Haunted Mansion Parlor that delivered the best cocktail experience and guests who will embark on the series of 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises will immediately want to haunt the space.

Over 70 Cruise Guests Fall Victim to Norovirus on Holland America Sailing

‘Tis the season for the spreading of germs, but passengers aboard a 10-night Caribbean cruise certainly didn’t expect the spread of norovirus ahead of their holidays.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed one such outbreak aboard Holland America Line’s 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam.

The 82,305-gross-ton ship is on a voyage that departed from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on December 4, 2024.

At press time, December 13, 2024, the CDC reported 74 passengers of the 1,923 onboard – less than 4 percent of guests – along with four of the ship’s 757 crew members, have fallen ill, experiencing symptoms that include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, headache, and fever.

The number of ill passengers has been climbing since the ship’s medical team first reported the outbreak to the CDC on December 11, 2024, while the vessel was spending a day in Aruba.

According to the CDC, norovirus is highly contagious and “the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States.”

The vessel is currently on its second sea day as it returns to Florida on December 14 from the Caribbean, where passengers visited Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas; Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos; Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic; Kralendijik in Bonaire; Willemstad in Curacao; and Oranjestad in Aruba.

The cruise line implemented its outbreak prevention and response plan, which included isolating affected individuals and ramping up cleaning and disinfection efforts to limit the spread of the virus.

In a statement to USA Today, a Holland America spokesperson said, “We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to minimize further transmission.”

The cruise line also said the outbreak will affect Zuiderdam’s next voyage, originally set to depart at 3 p.m. on December 14.

Passengers scheduled to set off on that 7-day itinerary to the Eastern Caribbean have been informed of a delayed embarkation due to additional sanitization measures Holland America Line will make between cruises.

How Norovirus Can Spread and Be Prevented

While norovirus is highly contagious, the CDC has only reported 12 outbreaks on US-based cruise ships in 2024 – with hundreds of voyages and thousands of passengers largely able to enjoy a healthy vacation.

Still, this is not Holland America Line’s first outbreak of the year. In March 2024, its Koningsdam ship, carrying 2,522 passengers, had 98 guests and 12 crew members falling victim to the virus on a Hawaiian and French Polynesian journey.

In fact, passengers can “still spread norovirus for up to 2 weeks or more after you feel better,” which is why an outbreak on a ship can be so disastrous.

Earlier in 2024, P&O Cruises’ P&O Ventura experienced an outbreak that, despite heavy cleaning procedures between sailings, continued to plague the 3,597-passenger ship for months.

The ship’s largest outbreak, which affected over 500 guests, took place during a 14-night sailing from England in May 2024. It was discovered that a previous 10-day April voyage had nearly 100 passengers reporting illness, indicating the virus was not eradicated before the subsequent journey.

For cruisers worried about contracting norovirus, the CDC recommends washing hands “well and often,” cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, washing fruits and vegetables and cooking shellfish thoroughly, and washing laundry in hot water.

Costco Revealed it Sold a 150-Day World Cruise for $293K

You always knew you could get anything you needed at Costco, but the company recently revealed even luxury around-the-world cruises are sold through the big box retailer.

During an earnings call on December 12, 2024, Costco’s Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip shared that the company sold a $293,000, 150-day, around-the-world cruise through its Costco Travel services.

This specialty side of Costco offers cruises, vacation packages, and rental cars to its members.

While revealing fun facts about the travel business, including that Costco Travel “sold enough rental cars to fill every US Costco parking spot 8.5 times,” Millerchip dropped the bombshell sale.

“Our largest cruise booking last year was a 150-day around-the-world cruise starting from Fort Lauderdale and making stops in places like the Galapagos and Easter Islands,” he said

“The total price was $293,000 for two in the Owner’s Suite cabin and added values on the booking included a shipboard credit of $13,000 and a Costco shop card worth $25,000,” he continued.

Costco, a membership-based warehouse club offering goods and services at discounted prices, charges $65 to $130 annually for its memberships, contributing to $1.17 billion in revenue through 138.8 million cardholders. The company generated $62.15 billion in total revenue in its first quarter.

High Demand for World Cruises

While Costco’s CFO did not disclose which cruise line operated the high-end voyage, several cruise lines offer world cruises to exotic destinations, many of which will begin new routes in January 2025.

And surprisingly – or not, considering if you’re going to sail around the world, you should do it in the largest suite possible – suites are the first to sell out.

For example, passengers can sail from Fort Lauderdale on a 124-day Grand World Voyage with Holland America Line on January 4, 2025. Its sailing aboard the 82,305-gross-ton Zuiderdam will visit 32 countries and features destinations like Machu Picchu, Easter Island, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Its largest offerings are Neptune Suites, offering a separate bedroom and living area. Guests in the Neptune Suites have exclusive lounge access, priority services, premium in-room amenities, exclusive dining options, and special invitations.

The suites on the world cruise are sold out. They also cost nearly $160,000 per person.

Or, consider the 116-night sailing aboard MSC Cruises’ 95,128-gross-ton MSC Magnifica, also leaving on January 4. This voyage from Civitavecchia (Rome) will visit 50 ports across 21 countries.

Its most expensive suites are its Royal Suites in the MSC Yacht Club, which also features separate sleeping and living areas with exclusive perks like 24-hour butler service. Balcony cabins can cost around $4,100 a night for two people.

But these world cruises and others still have availability for less expensive stateroom selections, including interior cabins, that start well below the suites’ hefty price tags. For instance, an interior cabin for Princess Cruises’ 116-day world voyage from Fort Lauderdale, departing on January 5, 2025, starts at $20,666.

Sailing on the 92,822-gross-ton Island Princess, passengers will explore 51 destinations across 26 countries on six continents, including maiden calls to Bar, Montenegro, and Taranto, Italy, as well as the Greek islands of Patmos and Volos.

Additionally, Azamara’s Azamara Onward begins its 155-night world cruise to 37 countries from San Diego on January 6, while Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Mariner takes off on its 150-night world cruise from Miami to San Francisco the following day.

Luxury cruise line Cunard’s Queen Anne will also embark on her maiden world cruise on January 7, with rates starting at $16,500 per person for an inside cabin. Unfortunately, its Queen Grill Suites, starting at $87,219, are already booked.
