Partial Barcelona Cruise Ship Ban to Begin in October

The face of cruising in Barcelona is about to undergo a significant transformation. Starting October 22, 2023, the city will ban cruise ships from docking at the northern docks.

This change, intended to limit exhaust gases closer to the city center, will significantly impact guests sailing onboard cruise ships that typically use the northern docks or the World Trade Center.

The World Trade Center area and the Muelle Barcelona Norte, the two docking locations affected by the ban, are especially popular due to the fact that guests can walk over to one of the city’s most popular attractions, La Rambla.

Barcelona Makes Changes in Docking Locations

A cruise ship ban in Barcelona, which has been under discussion since 2018, will take effect on October 22, 2023. The ban will ensure that ships dock much further from the city center.

Barcelona’s two cruise ship docking locations are divided into the southern and northern docks. The southern docks, home to the cruise terminal, are generally used by the larger cruise ships that sail from the Catalan capital city, such as those from Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and MSC Cruises, which will use Barcelona as the homeport for its LNG-powered cruise ship, MSC World Europa.

The Northern docks stretch from Muelle Barcelona Norte to the World Trade Center. They are typically used by the smaller cruise ships from Seabourn Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, and other ‘small’ cruise ships. However, the Muelle Barcelona Norte can also accommodate larger vessels.

The ban limits the number of available docking areas for cruise ships from more than ten to just seven. More importantly, the ban means that guests sailing to Barcelona will now be required to take a shuttle bus from the ship to the city, turning what used to be a brief 10-minute stroll to the famous La Rambla into a 30-minute journey.

Lluís Salvadó, the president of the Port of Barcelona, announced that the northern dock’s cruise activity will cease on October 22, although the last ship is now scheduled for October 2.

He stated: “It is not an arbitrary decision. Here there is a work of years of preparing the conditions for it to be so: we will close the closest point of emissions to the citizenship, and we already have a specific date to make this qualitative leap.”

The ban will, therefore, not have any noticeable effect on guests sailing on cruises from or to Barcelona in 2023. Starting in 2024, guests must keep the increased travel times to the city center in mind.

It could also be that cruise lines will choose to dock at the new cruise terminal in Tarragona, Spain, roughly one hour travel from Barcelona. Here, a new cruise terminal is being constructed that will be capable of hosting the largest of ships.

Impact on Cruise Guests and Industry

The decision is part of a broader plan that the municipal government and port authority agreed upon in 2018 to regulate cruise ship activity, stemming from controversies over increased pressure from tourism on Barcelona and the discussions that are being had worldwide over cruise ship emissions.

By limiting the number of available cruise ship piers to seven and relocating them to the southern docks, the city aims to mitigate the environmental impact and balance tourism demands.

Despite an 8% increase in cruise ship arrivals in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2019, the Port of Barcelona expects to host approximately 3.1 million guests this year, matching the pre-pandemic figure.

More From Cruise Hive

The scheduled calls for this year and next will remain around 800, as Salvadó explained that the goal is to stabilize this number and not increase it further.

The ban on cruise ships in this part of Barcelona is part of a broader trend we have seen in European cities in the last year. Besides Barcelona, cities such as Venice, Santorini, Amsterdam, and even the Orkney Islands have implemented or announced plans to limit or ban cruise ships.

What Does SS Stand for on Ships?

In the maritime world, abbreviations and acronyms differentiate various types of ships. These abbreviations make it easier to know which kind of ship is being discussed and can reflect a ship’s purpose, historical significance, or even which country it belongs to.

Today, we are going to answer what SS stands for on ships. Not only will we provide an answer and explain the historical significance of the abbreviation, but we will also look at the origins and meaning of some of the other common abbreviations and ship prefixes.

What Does SS Stand for on Ships?

Regarding ships, the abbreviation SS is short for “steamship.” Traditionally, the term described any ship that used a steam engine to power its primary propulsion system.

These types of engines were incredibly common in the 19th century and into the early 20th century. Steam engines completely changed the face of the maritime world, as they could propel ships through the water without relying on the wind blowing against sails or man-powered oars.

What Does S.S. Stand for on Ships?

While it may seem somewhat confusing, the SS prefix denotes a steamship, while the abbreviation S/S or S.S. refers to a “sailing ship.” Although the two abbreviations may look and sound similar, they refer to two distinct types of vessels.

What Does USS Stand for on Ships?

USS stands for “United States Ship.” It is the official title given to ships that belong to the United States Navy. Like the other abbreviations and acronyms, the prefix USS is followed by the ship’s unique name. USS can be attached to smaller vessels operated by the United States Navy and the largest aircraft carriers.

What Does HMS Stand for on Ships?

Another maritime term you may have come across is HMS. This acronym stands for “Her/His Majesty’s Ship.” HMS tends to be used by the British Royal Navy to separate warships that belong to the Crown from civilian ships or those belonging to another nation’s navy.

You may have seen this particular acronym on the sides of famous warships, as Britain’s Royal Navy was the most powerful navy on the planet from the mid-18th century until shortly after the Second World War!

While this acronym tends to be used almost exclusively by the Royal Navy in Great Britain, it can also be used to designate any ship owned or operated by the British monarchy or government. Today, it is still used often, including for the newest ships in the fleet.

What Does RMS Stand for on Ships?

You may have also encountered the acronym RMS while studying some of the more famous vessels in history. While it may surprise you, RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship.

This designation was given to any ship tasked with carrying mail under the contract of Britain’s Royal Mail service. Given that the written letter was one of the only ways to communicate with those in other parts of the world, being trusted with mail delivery was a great honor. A ship had to be fast, efficient, and reliable to be trusted with the task.

Titanic Voyage
Titanic Voyage

One of history’s most famous ships actually carried the RMS designation: the RMS Titanic. While the Titanic is primarily known as a luxury passenger ocean liner, it also was designed to transport mail between Europe and North America, hence the RMS designation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cruise ships have their own abbreviation or acronym?

Cruise ships rarely receive a standardized abbreviation or acronym. A merchant or navy abbreviation is unnecessary since these ships are designed almost exclusively for leisure and enjoyment. Instead, the cruise line that owns the passenger liner can give it any name they choose.

Is the SS abbreviation still used for ships today?

The SS designation is rarely given to ships today because few ships, aside from historical recreations, are powered by steam engines, so they would not be designated as a “steamship.”

Does every country use the same abbreviations for ships?

No, each country tends to have its own abbreviations for various types of ships. While some of the most popular and widely recognized, like SS, are nearly universal, each country and its navy tends to have its own terminology.

Other common abbreviations most countries use include MV, which stands for “Motor Vessel,” and RV, which designates a “Research Ship.”

Final Words

SS and other popular maritime abbreviations, like USS, HMS, and RMS, can carry important historical meanings, or they can be used for more practical reasons, such as making it easy to identify whether a ship belongs to a navy or is civilian-owned.

Today, these abbreviations are less important and prominent than they were at the turn of the previous century, but it is still worth familiarizing yourself with their meanings, especially if you are interested in maritime history and culture.

Holland America Line Details 28-Day Arctic Voyage

Guests aboard an upcoming Holland America Line Legendary Voyages cruise that sails within the Arctic Circle will traverse the routes of Erik the Red, the Norse explorer who was first to settle Greenland. The new itinerary debuts in 2025 and features port calls in five countries.

Nieuw Statendam to Sail 28-Day Northern Voyage

Holland America Line has unveiled an itinerary that its Nieuw Statendam will sail in June 2025, a 28-day “Arctic Circle Crossing: Greenland & Iceland” cruise roundtrip from Rotterdam, Netherlands. The routing, inspired by the explorations of 10th century Viking Erik the Red, features 15 port calls in five countries and passes through the Arctic Circle.

The Viking explorer is believed to have founded the first settlement in Greenland, and the country plays a big role in the itinerary. Nieuw Statendam will make four maiden calls in Greenland, at Nuuk, Ittoqqortoormiit, Sisimiut, and Ilulissat. (Erik the Red’s son was Leif Erikson, one of the first Europeans to reach North America.)

The 2,666-guest Pinnacle-class ship that launched in 2017 will also call at several destinations in Iceland, including an overnight in Reykjavik and a visit to Isafjördur. Cruisers will be able to take full advantage of extended daylight hours in the northern destinations, as the cruise departs on June 29, 2025, from Rotterdam.

Other port calls the ship will make include Ålesund, Trondheim, Honningsvåg (North Cape) and Tromsø, Norway; Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) and Invergordon (Inverness), Scotland; and Dover (London), England.

‘Legendary Voyages’ Offer Destination Immersion

The cruise line in March 2023 announced the launch of its Legendary Voyages cruise category, which features longer, destination-immersive sailings ranging up to 59 days. The new product unveiling was part of the line’s commemoration of its 150th anniversary this year.

Legendary Voyages give us the opportunity to create longer cruises that delve deeper into a region and include ports we don’t normally visit, like the four maiden calls in Greenland on the new Arctic Circle Crossing, said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line.

Nieuw Statendam Cruise Ship

We’re taking this itinerary up to Norway’s North Cape, then heading farther north in Greenland on both coasts and adding amazing opportunities in Iceland. At 28 days, it’s the perfect length to showcase this area and give our guests an experience that goes beyond a brief introduction to the countries,Bodensteiner added.

Guests aboard Nieuw Statendam also will enjoy scenic cruising opportunities in North Cape (Norway); Jan Mayen Island, in the Arctic Ocean; Scoresbysund (Greenland); and Eyjafjördur and Ísafjardardjúr (Iceland).

Remote Cruising Regions Gain in Popularity

Cruises to the farthest reaches of the earth have gained steam since the industry began its recovery from the pandemic, with several major lines introducing voyages to polar regions and the Northwest Passage, which runs from the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska, to the North Atlantic, near Canada’s Baffin Island.

Among the lines that have embraced these routes is Viking, which earlier this year announced that two of its ships would undertake Arctic and Northwest Passage itineraries. With cruises up to 27 days, the line’s Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will sail Arctic and Northwest Passage cruises between July and September 2025.

Holland America Line operates 11 cruise ships and is one of nine cruise brands owned by Carnival Corporation.

News of the line’s Arctic voyage was the second announcement Holland America Line made this month. Earlier in August it detailed a series of holiday cruises planned for 2023, where guests can celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year 2024 onboard several ships headed to warm destinations.

Sailings during the holiday weeks are planned for the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, from US ports such as Fort Lauderdale and San Diego. Onboard activities will include tree-lighting ceremonies, dreidel games, holiday movies, caroling parties, and a New Year’s ball, among other events.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Gratuity Nonsense

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has addressed the distinction between crew member gratuities and paid salaries in response to social media chatter about how the cruise line distributes tips to team members. This should help clarify how gratuities are given to team members and whether the extra monies do in fact count as extra appreciation.

Do Crew Members Really Get Gratuities?

Social media outrage has been circulating with the idea that Carnival Cruise Line does not really distribute gratuities to crew members in addition to the salaries they earn. Instead, the idea is that gratuities are used as employees’ base pay first, and the cruise line only makes up the difference to the contractual salary amount.

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador who has worked with the cruise line since 1989, addressed the ridiculous assumption and confirmed in no uncertain terms that this is not at all how the cruise line pays crew members.

“Normally I would never comment on this but let me say categorically that this is nonsense, totally 100% false and 100% inaccurate,” said Heald. “We do not use the gratuities you so graciously give to ‘pay the crew.’ It is utter fabrication and untrue.”

All crew members have a salary they are paid from Carnival Cruise Line, based on their position and years of experience. Any gratuities offered by guests – whether automatically added to onboard accounts or offered personally in cash – are added to their pay rate as an above-and-beyond appreciation for their above-and-beyond service.

Carnival Cruise Line’s service gratuities are currently $16 per guest, per day for standard staterooms and $18 per person, per day for suites.

Carnival’s website clearly states, “100% of your gratuities are distributed to the crew who you interact with, such as your stateroom attendants, dining and culinary services staff, as well as others who work behind the scenes to enhance your overall cruise experience.”

Travelers can pay gratuities in two ways, either by pre-paying at the time the cruise is booked or paying through their Sail & Sign account during their cruise. Tips are added to guests’ onboard accounts on the next-to-last day of each sailing.

More Tipping Topics

Gratuities are a sensitive topic for many travelers, and Heald has addressed different aspects of these crew appreciation payments many times.

Tipping as Part of the Cruise Fare

For example, cruise fans have often wondered why gratuities are not automatically included in the cruise fare, as they are in some parts of the world or on different cruise lines.

Heald has clarified that there are no plans for Carnival Cruise Line to automatically add gratuities to the fares for North American cruises, though cruises from Australia do have tips built in to the cruise price.

“Adding the gratuity to the price of the cruise is what we do in Australia and while I know of no plans to do the same from our ships that sail from North America perhaps one day it will happen,” Heald said in response to this idea.

While many guests would prefer the tips to be included in the cruise fare, Carnival’s option for guests to pre-pay gratuities at the time of booking effectively does add the service recognition into the overall cruise price, and it is an option available to all travelers.

The exact accounting as to why Carnival Cruise Line does not add tips directly into a cruise fare is a complicated issue, and likely relates to local taxation laws, financial profit recording, and other factors that make it simpler and more straightforward for gratuities to be recorded as an extra charge.

Removing Gratuities

One of the most contentious topics is whether or not cruise travelers should have the option to remove the automatic gratuities from their onboard accounts.

Many guests appreciate the convenience of having gratuities added automatically, which eliminates any guesswork about which crew members are in gratuity positions and how much a customary tip would be.

Other passengers prefer to tip in cash, offering a personal thank you or note with the gratuity they extend to crew members. Some travelers may also prefer not to tip at all, depending on the service they have received or their personal opinions about tipping.

Many travelers have argued that Carnival should not permit gratuities to be removed, but Heald has also addressed this issue quite clearly.

“We will continue to allow people to remove gratuities if they wish. We know (because we ask the crew) how many tip in cash instead of the pre-paid amounts. I understand why many wish to do this,” he said. “It is important to remember that lots of people who do remove gratuities tip the same amount in cash or more even and that is wonderful.”

MSC Cruise Ship Begins New Seasonal Itineraries

MSC Cruises has announced that MSC Meraviglia is now to offer a wide array of seasonal cruises to unique destinations, continuing its homeport offerings from New York City to 25 different ports of call this autumn.

Different itineraries and cruise lengths give travelers many amazing options, with plenty of time to enjoy the history, art, culture, food, activities, and more offered at every destination.

MSC Meraviglia Offering New Itineraries

On Monday, August 21, 2023, MSC Meraviglia departed New York City on her first Bermuda sailing, offering a new tropical destination for guests to enjoy in addition to the Bahamas and Florida.

The ship will spend a lengthy two-night stay in Bermuda, ensuring that everyone has ample time to enjoy the unique and desirable tropical paradise.

Additional new sailings are coming up in September as MSC Meraviglia will offer highly-coveted autumn itineraries to Canda and New England, visiting ports such as Newport, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; New Brunswick, Saint John; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The Canada/New England itineraries are thoughtfully timed from late September through mid-October, just when autumn foliage will be at its most vibrantly colorful, giving travelers a unique way to view nature’s changing seasonal beauty.

“Fall is the perfect time to visit the shores of the Northeast or get away to the beaches of Bermuda, and MSC Meraviglia is the perfect ship to sail through the seasons with its abundance of indoor and outdoor entertainment options,” said Rubén A. Rodríguez, President, MSC Cruises USA.

Interested travelers can take advantage of both unique itineraries with a back-to-back sailing beginning September 18, 2023, incorporating both the Bermuda itinerary as well as the first Canada and New England sailing for a robust and diverse cruise covering amazing cultures, history, natural beauty, and more.

Adding so many options has been a goal for MSC Cruises as the line expands its North American offerings with new homeports and new destinations.

“We launched sailings from New York to give our guests and travel advisors more options, and it’s exciting to see these itineraries come to life onboard the award-winning MSC Meraviglia,” said Rodríguez.

“These new sailings are an important growth milestone for us in the North American market and provide a unique cruising experience for guests who want to explore new destinations.”

The 171,600-gross ton MSC Meraviglia debuted in 2017, and offers an amazing selection of onboard dining, entertainment, and activities. Highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa with diverse wellness and relaxation treatments, more than 30 bars and restaurants, a full-size bowling alley, pickleball court, miniature golf, and much more.

For even more exclusivity, travelers will enjoy the MSC Yacht Club with its dedicated butler service and private restaurant, lounge, and pool area just for Yacht Club guests.

More MSC Cruises Growth

The success of MSC Meraviglia in New York is just part of MSC Cruises’ ongoing North American presence and expanded offerings.

In April, MSC Seaside moved to Port Canaveral as her new seasonal homeport, offering 3- and 4-night getaways to the Bahamas, including stops at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line’s private island.

Ocean Cay will be temporarily closed to travelers in spring 2024 for expansion, another sign of the cruise line’s committment to ongoing North America cruise offerings.

In the winter season for 2024-2025, four MSC Cruises ships will be sailing from Florida, while in April 2025, the upcoming MSC World America will debut from Miami with 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from the Sunshine State.

Embarkation Delayed for Carnival Cruise Line Flagship

Embarkation for Carnival Cruise Line’s flagship, Carnival Celebration, has been delayed on August 20, 2023 due to a medical evacuation.

As a result, embarking guests have been asked to shift their arrival time to the PortMiami Cruise Terminal to four hours later than expected, though all guests must be onboard the ship no later than 6:30 p.m.

Carnival Celebration Delayed

Due to a medical evacuation on the most recent sailing, Carnival Celebration has been delayed in returning to PortMiami and the resulting embarkation for the next cruise has likewise been delayed.

Embarking guests have been notified via email, and asked to delay their arrival at Terminal F for four hours past their originally scheduled appointment.

“On the return to Miami, Carnival Celebration had to deviate course due to a medical emergency,” the email explained. “As a result, embarkation for your cruise has been revised. Please delay your terminal arrival appointment by four hours.”

The nature of the medical emergency or impacted guests has not been divulged, in order to preserve the privacy of the individuals involved as well as their family members. The affected parties were airlifted from the vessel on Friday, August 18, while the ship was at sea.

The email also noted that guests who arrived earlier would be asked to return according to the revised timetable, with the last embarkations from 6-6:30 p.m.

Any guests who purchased Carnival transfers from local airports have had their transfer times adjusted based on the revised embarkation schedule.

Carnival Celebration Airlift
Carnival Celebration Airlift

The 183,500-gross ton, Excel-class Carnival Celebration has just finished an 8-night Southern Caribbean sailing that called at Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. The sailing departing today is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage to Amber Cove, San Juan, and St. Thomas.

Despite the embarkation delay, there is no further adjustment necessary for the upcoming itinerary. The first day of the cruise is scheduled as a day at sea, and it is easy for the vessel to adjust sailing speeds to accommodate an initial delay of just a few hours without impacting port arrival times for the rest of the sailing.

Compensation Offered

Because the delay in embarkation has caused incoming passengers to miss lunch offerings onboard Carnival Celebration – such as that first Guy’s Burger or a basket of strip’s from Shaq’s Big Chicken – the cruise line has provided a $20 per passenger onboard credit as compensation. The credits are posted to guests’ Sail & Sign accounts.

Guests are also able to drop their luggage off directly in their staterooms upon boarding, but are asked to leave their cabin right away to permit the housekeeping team to finish servicing all staterooms most efficiently.

Dining times will begin as planned for dinner with no adjustments, but guests who are a little late will be accommodated due to the unusual nature of the day’s schedule.

“Thank you for your understanding,” the email concluded. “The entire Carnival Celebration team is looking forward to welcoming you aboard.”

Delays Happen for Many Reasons

Embarkation day delays can happen for many reasons. In late June, Carnival Celebration was delayed for nearly 12 hours, along with Norwegian Escape and MSC Seascape, when an early-morning collision caused a wreckage that closed the channel into PortMiami.

Fog can also play a role in delaying cruise ships in and out of ports, when it may not be safe to navigate channels until visibility improves. Both Tampa and Galveston are particularly prone to such delays at different times of the year when weather conditions are right for the thickest fog.

Carnival Celebration Cruise Ship

Similarly, poor weather and strong winds can create delays, as has happened in various ports worldwide. This may be due to reduced visibility, winds that impact how a ship can maneuver, or other factors.

Carnival Celebration is not the first vessel to have a medical evacuation create a delay, as such incidents do happen. In February, Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas was delayed one hour leaving from Tampa due to a medical evacuation from the previous sailing.

Port operations, Coast Guard priorities, local construction, and other factors can all cause similar minor delays for cruise ships and may impact both debarkation and embarkation for different sailings.

It is always best for guests to have flexible travel plans and to remain patient with crew members and terminal staff as they begin or end their cruise vacation.

Carnival Ship Expected to Return Home Late After Urgent Airlift

The Dutch Coast Guard was involved in the rescue of a guest from the Carnival Celebration earlier today, August 18. The guest had suffered a medical emergency after the Excel-class vessel had left the Dutch Caribbean Island of Curacao.

Due to the delay that the operation has caused, Carnival Celebration will possibly be arriving late in Miami for the following cruise.

Guest Disembarked by Helicopter from Carnival Celebration

Carnival Cruise Line has put out an urgent embarkation message for guests booked on the Carnival Celebration sailing departing August 20.

The ship could be returning back to Miami late, following a medical debark by helicopter on August 18. The medical emergency onboard Carnival Celebration prompted a speedy rescue operation involving the Dutch Coast Guard.

Carnival Celebration had just completed a visit to the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba on August 15, Bonaire on August 16, and Curacao on August 17. She was making her way to Miami when the incident occurred onboard.

Although the cruise ship has resumed her course back to her homeport of Miami, the 183,521 gross tons vessel will likely arrive in Miami later than scheduled. Typically, arrival would be early, around 8:00 AM.

The late arrival could affect her subsequent cruise, a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, and guests sailing onboard who might need to re-arrange their flights.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, posted a message on his Facebook account detailing the rescue operation: “Early this morning, Carnival Celebration deviated course to disembark a guest who needed urgent medical care ashore. As a result, the ship will return to Miami later than scheduled, and embarkation for your cruise will be revised.”

“Of course, we must say a huge thank you to the medical team on the ship for all their diligence and care and consideration. We wish the guest a full and speedy recovery,” Heald added.

Heald continued by saying that the cruise line will monitor Carnival Celebration’s progress throughout the day, and provide further updates by 4:00 PM Eastern Time.

The seven-day cruise sailing to the eastern Caribbean on August 20 will call on Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Guests booked onboard the August 20 sailing will need to keep in close contact with Carnival Cruise Line, to be kept informed about any possible delays to their embarkation time on Sunday.

Several Helicopter Rescues in the Past Months

The rescue of a guest onboard Carnival Celebration by the Coast Guard by helicopter is something we’ve seen more often in recent months.

On April 29, 2023, we saw the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in action. They faced treacherous conditions to airlift a guest from Carnival Dream.

The severity of the situation became all too apparent when the initial rescue attempt had to be aborted; the aircrew was nearly forced into the water’s surface due to the adverse conditions.

Undeterred, a second crew later capitalized on a brief weather respite to complete the critical medical evacuation.

Fast-forward to Friday, May 19, 2023, and the USCG was again called into action. An aircrew from Air Station Astoria was dispatched to conduct a medical evacuation from Celebrity Eclipse. The Solstice-class cruise ship was approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the northern Oregon coast at that time.

Celebrity Eclipse was en route on a repositioning cruise, transitioning from Honolulu to Vancouver, when a guest onboard showed stroke-like symptoms and had to be airlifted to a medical facility ashore.

Carnival Cruise Ship to Depart Port Early, Guests Urged to Return

Due to expected poor weather arriving earlier than anticipated, Carnival Pride will need to depart Cork, Ireland sooner than expected on Friday, August 18, 2023. Carnival Cruise Line is attempting to contact passengers and urging them to be back to the ship no later than 5 p.m.

Carnival Pride to Leave Port Early

Carnival Pride is visiting Cobh (Cork), Ireland today, but deteriorating weather is forcing the ship to leave the port earlier than the originally scheduled departure time of 7 p.m. At this time, the cruise line is reaching out to guests to alert them to be back aboard no later than 5 p.m.

“This is an update for Carnival Pride’s guests only. If you are ashore in Cork, Ireland, please return to the ship by 5:00 PM,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador via social media. “Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate this evening, and the ship will have to sail earlier than planned.”

Previously, the all-aboard time for guests was to have been 6:30 p.m., in preparation for the 7 p.m. departure.

Undoubtedly, multiple methods are being used to alert guests to the changed departure time. This may include updates in the Carnival Hub app, text messages, emails, and announcements onboard (for guests who may have been planning a later time to leave the ship and explore the port).

The cruise line is also likely reaching out to all Carnival shore excursions currently underway in Cork to alert them to the departure adjustment, and tour operators will subsequently cut excursions short if necessary to return to the ship on time. Tour operators will also spread the word to those guests on excursions.

It is possible the Spirit-class ship will also blow its horn to alert guests near the dock area, though not all travelers may be familiar with this signal or know that it is intended to encourage everyone to return to the vessel.

Severe Weather Expected

Cobh is located in southern Ireland, off the Celtic Sea, and the entire region is inundated with poor weather today. The severity of the weather is expected to increase significantly after 5 p.m., and may not improve for several hours. Localized flooding is expected.

The strength and direction of winds are of particular importance to cruise operations, as strong winds can push a ship and prevent it from sailing safely in tight spaces. Winds can also cause ships to break their mooring ropes and move adrift.

Winds today in Cobh are from the east-southeast, which means they are likely pushing Carnival Pride against the dock. This means it is unlikely the ship will break loose, but stronger gusts may make thruster maneuvering impossible – which is necessary for the ship to depart.

Wind speeds are reported at 20-25 miles per hour (32-40 kilometers per hour), and are expected to increase to 28 mph (45 kph) over the next couple of hours. Gusts may be measured as high as 45-50 mph (72-80 kph).

Local residents in the area are reporting the poor weather conditions as more similar to a fall or winter storm rather than what should be a summer day.

The 88,500-gross ton Carnival Pride features 12 decks which presents a significant profile for winds to push against, dramatically impacting how efficiently the ship can maneuver. The ship can welcome 2,124 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 2,680 travelers when fully booked.

Carnival Pride is homeported in Dover, UK for the summer, offering a mix of European itineraries with destinations in Ireland, England, Scotland, Iceland, and more. The ship will reposition to Civitavecchia (Rome) in early September to offer additional Mediterranean sailings, before returning to Tampa, Florida in late October to spend the winter in the Caribbean.

Couple Begs Cruise Ship Not to Leave Them Behind

Pier runners are a phenomenon that most experienced cruisers are familiar with and may have witnessed more than once.

Just days ago, however, a pair of pier runners was left behind in an unexpected port of call – rather than one of the Caribbean ports with plenty of nearby bars, this couple was left behind in Bari, Italy, when they failed to return to MSC Splendida before the ship departed.

Pier Runners in Italy

Two cruise guests were left behind in Bari, Italy on the current sailing of MSC CruisesMSC Splendida on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Video of the incident has been circulating on social media, showing the couple at the end of the closed pier on quay 11 calling and begging to the ship’s captain for the vessel to return.

“Is the captain there, please,” the man in the video was heard yelling (in Italian), followed by “Captain, wait for us please! You can do it if you want to.” You can watch the full video below:

The couple had arrived back at the ship after the designated departure time, when the gangway had already been removed and the ship was starting to pull away. The vessel did not return for the tardy passengers.

“I am very sorry for the episode,” UGO Patroni Griffi, president of the Port System Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea, told the Italian newspaper Repubblica. “They tried to ask the ship to turn back or at least to stop operations. Obviously it is impossible for cruise ships that have limited times and are also very expensive operations.”

Bari is located in southeastern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, and is a popular port of call for Adriatic or Mediterranean cruises. On August 15, MSC Splendida was in port from 7 a.m. through 2 p.m., and Viking Cruises’ Viking Sky was also visiting the port.

The 138,000-gross ton Fantasia class MSC Splendida is currently offering a range of Adriatic and Greek Island cruises. In addition to Bari, the ship is visiting such popular ports of call as Trieste, Santorini, Corfu, Istanbul, and Athens. Itineraries range from 5-10 nights, depending on where guests embark and debark the ship. In late October, the ship will reposition to South Africa.

Pier Runners Worldwide

Pier runners – cruise guests who are late to return to a ship and must run the pier to catch it – are not uncommon, but typically these incidents occur in ports of call that are well-known for energetic bars and cheap drinks.

Ports in Mexico and other parts of the Caribbean are especially popular for the pier runner phenomenon. Alcohol consumption is not always a factor in pier running, however.

Guests may be late to return to a cruise ship for a number of reasons, including underestimating how long it may take to walk back to the ship from local shopping centers, staying too long at a beach, or arranging a private tour that may run over its planned time or get stuck in traffic.

It is a misconception that cruise ships could easily return to pick up late travelers, especially when the vessel may be just a few feet from the dock.

Port berth schedules are very tightly defined, and if a ship is late leaving its assigned space, it may be subject to steep fines and additional taxes. Furthermore, this could impact other ships in a knock-on effect, whether it is another cruise ship, cargo vessel, local ferry, or any other ship scheduled for the space.

When a guest is left behind in a port of call, a representative of the cruise line will be on hand to help assist them with necessary documentation and travel arrangements to reach the vessel at a later port, or to return to the homeport. Expenses for this travel are the responsibility of the guest and may not be covered by travel insurance, depending on the terms of the policy.
