Carnival Cruise Ship Floods on Final Night of Cruise

In the early morning hours of March 23, cruisers onboard Carnival Sunrise awoke to an unpleasant surprise. Many passengers found themselves displaced after their staterooms flooded with several inches of water – and the videos of the event are taking over social media.

Carnival Sunrise Deals With Unexpected Flooding

As Carnival Sunrise was sailing back to Miami, Florida, to conclude a 5-night Western Caribbean sailing that had called on Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and George Town, Grand Cayman; the cruise experienced an unexpected crisis. Overnight and into the early morning of Saturday, March 23, 2024, multiple decks of the Sunshine-class cruise ship ended up flooded.

The flooding, which continued overnight, impacted many staterooms, with disgruntled guests posting videos of their water-logged cabins on social media platforms. The corridors were also full of water, and water flowed down stairwells as crew members worked to manage the situation.

The ship’s captain did update passengers onboard about the situation, stating that the weather was part of the cause of the flooding. Some outdoor areas were also closed off, but the ship’s arrival home was not impacted.

For example, one user shared a video of their stateroom, which they identified as room 2293, as it was filled with 4 to 5 inches of water and a trash can floated through the room. Another shared pictures of the water reaching up to their ankles and displaced passengers resting in the ship’s lobby and theater, with some wearing life jackets.

“Not a single announcement was made while the water level continued to rise & the scare increased. Then the Captain comes on almost 4 hours later after the flooding began and says everything is “operating normally.” Reallyyyy? This is normal to y’all????,” wrote one Facebook user who was onboard.

Cruise Hive has reached out to Carnival Cruise Line and will update the post once more details are known.

What Happened and Will Carnival Sunrise’s Next Cruise Be Impacted?

Although the incident has not yet been confirmed by Carnival, passengers posting on social media say that the flooding was either caused by a burst pipe or bad weather, as Carnival Sunrise was sailing through a storm on her way back to Miami, Florida, from Grand Cayman in the Western Caribbean.

Based on weather reports from the night of March 23rd, rain and thunderstorms were occurring off the coast of Florida and into the Bahamas. The 2,984-guest vessel did sail through an intense storm, and lightning was occurring at the time.

“We went through a pretty bad storm Friday night. So bad that for about 20-30 minutes the boat was at an angle with the even room side of the boat higher than the odd. Driving rain made it into the rooms and some rooms had their balcony doors open somehow,” wrote one redditor.

On the same day, Carnival Freedom was similarly caught in bad weather while sailing off the coast of Eleuthera Island in The Bahamas. At approximately 3:15 p.m. local time, one of the ship’s exhaust funnels caught fire after a suspected lightning strike.

But while the Conquest-class ship had to cancel its next two sailings to fix the fire damage, Carnival Sunrise is back at sea without a delay. The 101,509-gross ton ship embarked on another 5-night Eastern Caribbean sailing as scheduled on the evening of March 23.

So far, the ship called on Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos, on March 25, 2024, with no reported issues. The ship will also visit Princess Cays, Bahamas – the private destination used by Princess Cruises and its sister companies – and Nassau, Bahamas, before returning to Miami on March 28.

Cruise ships are equipped with qualified staff who are capable of making repairs at sea, so it’s likely that crew members have been able to address damages without delaying subsequent sailings.

Some were worried that the water damage might seep into the carpet and cause the affected areas to smell, but most modern ships are also equipped with big industry fans to dry the wetness.

Carnival Cruise Line Extends Cruises from Florida Port

Carnival Cruise Line and JAXPORT have agreed to extend their collaboration, ensuring Carnival cruises will continue to sail from Jacksonville, Florida, through 2026. The agreement includes options to renew through 2030.

A Continued Voyage out of Jacksonville

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) and Carnival Cruise Line have officially announced an extension of their partnership, guaranteeing Carnival Elation will continue its year-round Bahamas cruises from Jacksonville’s North Jacksonville Cruise Terminal.

The new agreement extends the service for an additional two years with the possibility of four one-year extensions, keeping the cruise line in Jacksonville through at least 2026 and potentially until 2030.

Eric Green, CEO of JAXPORT, highlighted the significance of the extension, saying, “JAXPORT has a longstanding partnership with Carnival, and we are grateful for their commitment to serving Jacksonville and providing even more reasons for tourists to visit our great city.”

The partnership’s extension includes JAXPORT committing to further terminal upgrades to improve the passenger experience. These enhancements include a new parking area, an upgraded VIP Lounge, and an improved boarding platform that allows passengers to board the ship at the Promenade level.

Carnival’s cruise operations over the past 20 years have seen more than 3 million passengers embark from Jacksonville, significantly contributing to the city’s tourism and local economy.

Said Green“The continued growth of our cruise program is another way we create jobs and economic impact for our region and state.”

The cruise industry’s economic contribution in Jacksonville supports nearly 800 jobs and generates over $187 million in annual economic impact for Northeast Florida. The contribution is further amplified by the city’s status as an expanding drive-to cruise market, with more than 98 million consumers situated within driving distance of the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal.

Jacksonville’s Carnival Elation

Carnival Elation currently offers 4 – and 5-night voyages to the Bahamas. These roundtrip cruises explore Nassau, Bimini Islands, and the exclusive retreat of Princess Cays, Carnival Cruise Lines’ private island.

With a capacity to host 2,130 passengers at double occupancy, Carnival Elation is a mid-sized cruise ship boasting a gross tonnage of 71,909. Despite being the oldest vessel in the Carnival fleet, constructed in 1998, Elation receives dry dock renovations every three years.

Theater and comedy shows provide nightly entertainment, with an onboard water park, pool, mini golf course, and other outdoor activities rounding out the amenities.

Carnival Elation is currently the only large cruise ship that calls Jacksonville its home port, underscoring its significance to JAXPORT.  However, a recent agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) will bring the cruise line to the area for the first time in November 2025 with the arrival of Norwegian Gem

Norwegian Gem will also sail to the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean on 11- and 12-day roundtrip cruises between November and April 2025 through 2028 in an agreement to operate out of Jacksonville for three years.

Jacksonville’s cruise sector will be further enhanced by upcoming visits from Crystal Cruises during Crystal Serenity’s “Americas & Caribbean” cruise sailing between Quebec and Bridgetown, Barbados, in November 2024, and German cruise line Phoenix Risen’s Amera, which will call in 2025 during its “Great Winter Journey to America” from Bremerhaven.

Carnival Cruise Line Orders a Fifth Excel-Class Ship

In a surprise announcement, Carnival Corporation revealed it will build a fifth Excel-class ship for its Carnival Cruise Line brand. The disclosure came just six weeks after the parent company signed an agreement to construct a fourth ship in the class for its flagship cruise line.

Latest New-Build to Enter Service in 2028

Carnival Corporation, operator of nine global cruise brands, signed a contract with Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard to construct a fifth Excel-class vessel for Carnival Cruise Line, with a scheduled entry to service in 2028.

The ship, as yet unnamed, is the second Excel-class new-build to be announced in just over a month. In mid-February 2024, Carnival Corporation revealed it signed an agreement with the same shipyard to build the brand’s fourth ship in the class — a sister ship to existing Excel vessels Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. The fourth in the series is due to launch in 2027.

Carnival’s Excel-class fleet will soon be a quintet of these very popular ships that provide outstanding guest amenities and tremendous operating efficiencies, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line

“Since the introduction of Mardi Gras in 2021 and the subsequent expansion with Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023, these Excel-class ships are driving excitement, demand, and strong guest satisfaction ratings,” Duffy added.

The Excel-class ships, all with gross tonnage exceeding 180,000 and powered by LNG (liquified natural gas), pioneered new onboard spaces and activities, such as the first rollercoaster at sea on Mardi Gras. Ships in the class accommodate 6,400 guests with all berths occupied, and 1,800 crew.

The newly announced fifth in the class will be the 11th Excel ship across the full Carnival Corporation fleet. Other Excel-class ships include P&O Cruises’ Arvia and Iona, for instance.

Executive Hints at More Fleet Changes Coming

Carnival Corporation brands reported robust financials in 2023, with revenues beating expectations and spurring future growth. In the third quarter of last year, the company posted total revenue of just over $6 billion, and net income of $1.07 billion.

Carnival Cruise Line continues to perform at an outstanding level, and we are focused on adding capacity across the company where it aligns with demand and our position in the marketplace, said Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation.

The top executive added that the latest ship order for Carnival Cruise Line shows the company’s commitment to growth. Moreover, he indicated there will be more “fleet plans” in the coming months to meet capacity demands across the company’s brands.

Shipyard executives hailed the new ship order, which is contingent on financing and expected to be finalized later in 2024.

We are proud of the role the Excel-class from Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku has played in contributing to the success of Carnival Corporation for many years now. We look forward to continuing this success story together, said Bernd Eikens, CEO of Meyer Group.

Carnival Cruise Line’s existing Excel-class ships are all operating from US ports. Mardi Gras is based at Port Canaveral. The 180,000-gross ton ship operates 6- to 8-day Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises.

Carnival Celebration, home-ported at PortMiami, weighs 183,521 gross tons and sails 6- to 8-day Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries.

The 182,800-gross ton Carnival Jubilee, voted Best New Cruise Ship of 2023 in Cruise Hive’s annual awards, sails 7-day Western Caribbean cruises from Galveston, Texas.

Port of Baltimore Operations Halted Following Bridge Collapse

0

In a striking turn of events that unfolded in the early hours of March 26, 2024, a colossal container vessel, the Dali, measuring 948 feet in length, struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, causing the bridge’s collapse.

The bridge is a crucial infrastructure for the Port of Baltimore.

Bridge Collapse Stymies Vessel Traffic

The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. when Dali deviated from its course, striking a support pier of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The collision brought down a significant portion of the bridge, severely disrupting traffic and leading to reports of vehicles and individuals falling into the water.

A StreamTimeLive video captured the moments leading to the crash, showing the Dali momentarily losing power and going dark, followed by the appearance of smoke as power returns. The vessel then crashes directly into the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s support, leading to an immediate collapse. The cause of this event is currently under investigation as ongoing search and rescue operations are in place.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state emergency in Maryland. In response to the disaster, the Port of Maryland announced, “Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice.”

The port iterates the Port of Baltimore is not shut down as it is still processing trucks inside the terminals.

Impact on Cruise Operations

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, a segment of Interstate 695 encircling Baltimore, spans the Patapsco River, which provides access to the Maryland Cruise Terminal. Although no cruises are currently in port, the incident raises concerns over the immediate impact on the cruise industry, with several cruises scheduled in the upcoming weeks facing potential alterations or delays.

Among the affected cruises are Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Legend and Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas. Both ships are currently homeported in Baltimore and on voyages scheduled to return to Baltimore.

Carnival Legend’s 7-night roundtrip Bahamas Cruise, en route to Bimini from a March 24 departure from Baltimore, is slated to return on March 31. Vision of the Seas, en route to St. Croix on a 12-night roundtrip Southern Caribbean Cruise from Baltimore, is slated to return on April 4.

As the incident is still in search and operations procedures, the Port of Baltimore cannot comment on future operations. Cruise lines will not change itineraries until they learn more from the port. Developments will follow in the coming days.

“This happened just a couple of hours ago, and to expect Carnival and me to say what is going to happen is quite impossible to answer,” said John Heald, brand ambassador and senior cruise director of Carnival Cruise Lines. “But for now, all of us at Carnival Cruise Line, and I am sure most of you reading this, have only thoughts for the families of those caught up in this horrific tragedy.”

The Port of Baltimore

The Port of Baltimore, nestled in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, boasts the region’s deepest harbor and stands as a pivotal maritime gateway in the U.S. Its location is within an overnight drive of one-third of the U.S.’ population.

A significant hub for cruise operations, the Port of Baltimore contributes more than $63 million to Maryland’s economy.

Currently, MarineTraffic data indicates Baltimore as the intended destination for approximately 40 vessels, which includes six cruise ships.

The cruise terminal hosts several cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line, offering year-round trips. Norwegian does not currently have a Baltimore route, returning in September for its fall-themed “Canada & New England” cruise, scheduled to depart from Baltimore on September 7.

MSC Cruises Makes Inaugural Stops at Brazilian Destinations

MSC Cruises’ MSC Poesia made inaugural stops at three new destinations in the North region of Brazil during its World Cruise 2024.

MSC Cruises Ventures into the Amazon

On March 13, MSC Cruises achieved a milestone by docking in Manaus, Amazonas, for the first time. The venture into the Northern region of Brazil is part of the MSC World Cruise 2024, a 121-day journey to explore new horizons.

MSC Poesia’s journey began on January 4 in Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. It took passengers through a series of European and African destinations before arriving in Brazil. After passing through Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, the cruise made its way north to Manaus. It continued its firsts in the region with visits to Alter do Chao and Belem, introducing travelers to the Amazon.

Nestled in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, Manaus serves as the capital of Amazonas and is a crucial hub for ecological tourism and a gateway for exploring the Amazon Basin. The city is home to the iconic Teatro Amazonas, an opulent opera house dating back to the rubber boom era.

Known as the Caribbean of the Amazon, Alter do Chao is a small village in the state of Para, famous for its picturesque white sand beaches framed by the Amazon Rainforest. Situated on the banks of the Tapajos River, it is renowned for the Ilha do Amor (Love Island), a heart-shaped island with stunning beaches that appear during the dry season.

Belem, the capital of Para, is located near the Amazon River’s mouth on the Atlantic Coast. One of the oldest European cities in the Amazon, Belem is often used as a starting point for journeys into the Amazon Rainforest.

Following its pioneering stops in the Amazon, the 3,223-passenger MSC Poesia set sail for the Caribbean to call on ports in Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Fort de France, Martinique; Puerto Plata/Amber Cover, Dominican; and Ocean Cay, Bahamas.

The World Cruise aboard the 92,627-gross-ton ship will head to North America on March 29 with overnight stays in Miami and New York. The itinerary also includes visits to Nova Scotia, Quebec, and various Northern European destinations before concluding in Warnemunde, Germany, on May 4.

World Cruises 2025 and 2026 Now Open for Booking

Looking ahead, MSC Cruises has opened bookings for its MSC World Cruise 2025 and 2026, promising even more innovative itineraries.

The 2025 cruise, taking place on MSC Magnifica, will feature 50 destinations in 21 countries, traversing continents from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. The 2026 voyage promises 47 destinations across 32 countries, with a route that includes Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and Asia.

MSC Magnifica, which can also accommodate up to 3,223 passengers and boasts a gross tonnage of 95,128, features five gourmet restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, and the MSC Aurea Spa.

Passengers also enjoy an indoor pool with a retractable roof, and a variety of sports and entertainment options. However, the ship does not feature MSC Cruises’ MSC Yacht Club, the all-inclusive luxury accommodations option.

The ship, currently sailing 3- to 4-night itineraries in the Bahamas, will kick off its 116-Night World Cruise on January 4, 2025, in Civitavecchia, and conclude on May 2 in Marseille, France.

MSC Magnifica’s 2026 World Cruise will launch on January 4, also from Civitavecchia, ending its 118-night voyage in Genoa, Italy.

West End Theater Production Debuting on Cunard’s Newest Ship

Cunard Line announced the debut of the Olivier Award-winning comedy, “Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)” on its Queen Anne vessel. The show will premier as part of the ship’s British Isles Festival Voyage.

A Cultural Voyage

In a move that bridges the grandeur of traditional theater with the majesty of the seas, Cunard Line has announced its latest onboard entertainment venture, the staging of the multi-award-winning West End comedy, “Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)” on the 113,300-gross-ton, Pinnacle-class Queen Anne.

The announcement comes as the ship prepares for its inaugural sailing on May 10, 2024, and its subsequent British Isles Festival Voyage, set to depart on May 24, 2024, for a two-week circumnavigation of the British Isles.

Queen Anne, the new 2,996-passenger and 1,225-crew ship, becomes Cunard Line’s fourth ship, joining Queen Mary 2Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria. Her debut makes it the first time Cunard Line will have four ships simultaneously sailing.

“We are excited to be teaming up with the incredible David Pugh for the at-sea premiere of ‘Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of),’ which is one of the most acclaimed West End productions of recent times,” Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, said. “I truly believe we are redefining luxury entertainment at sea with Queen Anne.”

The Theatric Experience

Passengers on board Queen Anne for her maiden season can expect a dynamic performance of “Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)” that, according to show creator Isobel McArthur, is “deeply affectionate towards the iconic Jane Austen original.”

“Our version of the original rom-com is ‘Pride & Prejudice’ but told by the servants – with karaoke!” added McArthur. “It is a big-hearted, dynamic ensemble piece where those who normally just serve the tea are suddenly playing every part… They can’t wait to present this special iteration of the play for its very first at-sea audience.”

Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)

Following its debut, the show is slated to become a mainstay of Queen Anne’s entertainment offerings. The ship will feature several “Event Voyages” filled with special guests and partnerships for a series of performances, interactive workshops, and master classes.

Based in Southampton, Queen Anne will mark her debut with a 14-Night Canary Islands’ cruise departing on May 10, 2024. This early cruise will call on Funchal, Madeira; Arrecife, Gran Canaria, and Tenerfie, Canary Islands; and La Coruna before returning to Southampton.

What Else to Expect on Queen Anne

Beyond the London Theater experience, guests aboard Queen Anne can look forward to an array of enriching amenities. For instance, live music will be found throughout the vessel, including a resident pianist in the Commodore Club during pre-dinner hours, and the sound of harp strings and contemporary bands in various lounges.

Dining on Queen Anne will include imaginative menus in the main dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those seeking additional options, the ship will offer Mediterranean flavors, Japanese cuisine, and a flagship steakhouse, as well as the Golden Lion pub, which adds a British pub at sea. Afternoon Tea will be available daily in the Queens Room.

Carnival Cancels Two Cruises After Fire Damages Funnel

After the funnel on the Carnival Freedom cruise ship caught fire on March 23 due to a possible lightning strike, the cruise line has announced that the following two cruises are cancelled for repairs.

Carnival Freedom Cruises Cancelled

Carnival Cruise Line has now been forced to cancel two cruises of the Carnival Freedom after the ship’s funnel caught fire on Saturday, March 23, approximately 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera Island, Bahamas.

With severe weather conditions impacting the region, the ship had already cancelled its scheduled call to Princess Cay and instead made an unscheduled call to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island on Sunday, March 24.

During Carnival Freedom’s call in Freeport, the damaged funnel was further inspected, and the cruise line said that the damage was more severe than first thought. Thus, the ship’s March 25 and 30 departures from Port Canaveral, Florida, were cancelled.

In a statement to Cruise Hive, Carnival said, While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport today.  Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 30 cruises from Port Canaveral.

Carnival Freedom is returning to its homeport of Port Canaveral overnight to disembark passengers from the March 21 sailing, which is a four-night Bahamas itinerary. The ship will then head back to Freeport, where the Grand Bahama shipyard is based, for repairs to the funnel.

Carnival added,The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs.

Guests Booked on Cancelled Sailings

With the Conquest-class vessel being out of action for the following two sailings, those guests booked, are being offered compensation. The cruise line is giving a 100% future cruise credit that can be used for a future cruise with Carnival.

In a letter to impacted guests, Carnival said, “We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation.

We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing on us for their outstanding cooperation and support,Carnival added.

The March 25 sailing was set to be a five-night western Caribbean itinerary, including calls to Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The cancelled five-night Eastern Caribbean March 30 voyage was set to make calls at Grand Turk and then Amber Cove, before returning home.

Carnival has not announced any cancellation of the April 4 departure from Port Canaveral. As long as repairs to the damaged funnel run smoothly, this sailing will likely go ahead as normal.

Second Funnel Repair for Carnival Freedom

this is now the second time that Carnival Freedom has needed a repair to its funnel due to a fire. In May 2022, while docked in Grand Turk, the ship’s funnel caught fire, which resulted in cancellations and the vessel sailing with an oddly looking funnel until repairs could be made during a dry dock.

Carnival Freedom Funnel
Carnival Freedom Funnel

That dry dock was completed in October 2023, where the ship had a new funnel installed, along with an expanded casino, the new Heros and Trubutes bar, routine maintenance, a Pickleball court, and the new red, white, and blue livery.

Carnival Freedom is a 110,000-gross-ton cruise ship that joined the fleet in 2007. She has a guest capacity of 2,980 at double occupancy and 1,150 international crew members. Since entering service, the vessel has undergone four dry docks.

Update on Next Cruise After Carnival Cruise Ship Fire

UPDATE: Two sailings have now been cancelled for the Carnival Freedom due to the damaged funnel. The latest update is here.

Following a possible lightning strike that hit the port side of the iconic “whale tail” funnel on Carnival Freedom on Saturday, March 23, causing a fire, the ship is able to continue her cruise and the next sailing should not be impacted.

Authorities are investigating the incident and all of the ship’s systems are fully operational after the scary situation, and only some areas of the ship’s open decks are closed for safety.

Update on Damage to Carnival Freedom After Second Fire

In a letter sent to guests booked on the next sailing of Carnival Freedom, Carnival Cruise Line has provided an update to the ship’s condition and operation following a fire that damages the port side wing of the ship’s funnel.

“Saturday afternoon, Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was approximately 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport as a replacement port of call for the cancelled visit to Princess Cays (due to adverse weather),” the letter explained.

The current sailing is a 4-night Bahamas itinerary that was originally to have visited Nassau and Princess Cays. The call to Freeport is now planned for Sunday, March 24, and the ship will return on schedule to her homeport, Port Canaveral, on Monday, March 25.

“The ship’s emergency response team was quickly activated and was able to extinguish the fire. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed,” the email said. “There are no reports of injuries to guests and two firefighting team members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.”

The email does confirm that “there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems” and “except for the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning.”

This includes the ship’s safety and navigation systems, propulsion, hotel operations, restaurants, and entertainment.

Next Cruise to Continue

Carnival Cruise Line is also reassuring passengers that the ship’s next voyage, a 5-night Eastern Caribbean cruise departing on March 25 with calls to Amber Cove and Grand Turk, is still planned to set sail on schedule.

“We do not expect any impact to the next voyage,” the email confirmed.

The 110,000-gross-ton, Conquest-class Carnival Freedom can welcome 2,980 passengers aboard, and is also home to roughly 1,150 international crew members. The ship is homeported year-round from Port Canaveral, offering a variety of 4-night Bahamas and 5-night Eastern Caribbean cruises, perfect for quick getaways.

About the Damage

It should be noted that the ship’s funnel is an exhaust vent and it is possible for the vessel to run safely without the characteristic “wings” that make Carnival cruise ships so distinctive.

In fact, following a fire in May 2022, Carnival Freedom ran without either wing of her funnel until the structure was be replaced just five months ago, during a dry dock in October 2023.

Damaged Carnival Freedom Funnel
Damaged Carnival Freedom Funnel (Photo Credit: Randalyn Rogers)

In that first fire, it was the ship’s starboard funnel wing that was severely damaged, so much so that part of its internal structure melted and it was necessary for the ship to undergo emergency repairs to remove the damaged sections.

After that incident, the ship was not able to sail and the next cruise was cancelled, while guests onboard were transferred to Carnival Conquest to return to Florida. Ultimately, four cruises were cancelled before Carnival Freedom returned to service on June 11, 2022.

Undoubtedly, options will be considered for further repairs to the ship’s funnel once again after a full technical and cosmetic assessment is made. As the ship only recently came out of dry dock, it may be some time before her funnel is repaired, depending on how the work can be completed.

Guests booked on upcoming cruises for Carnival Freedom will want to stay in close contact with Carnival Cruise Line for updates and the possibility of cancellations if the ship needs to be removed from service for repairs.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Cancelled for Charter Sailing

Guests booked on the June 14, 2024 sailing of Spectrum of the Seas have been notified this week that their cruise has become a chartered sailing, and therefore their voyage is now cancelled.

Several alternative options are offered, including a full refund, different sailings on the same ship, and different sailings on other Royal Caribbean ships so guests can still plan a getaway they will enjoy.

Spectrum of the Seas Cruise Cancelled

The June 14, 2024 sailing of Spectrum of the Seas has been cancelled for a charter sailing. The original 5-night cruise was to have departed from Shanghai, China and visited two ports of call in Japan – Yatsushiro/Kumamoto City and Nagasaki – before returning to Shanghai on June 19.

While the ship will still set sail on that itinerary, because it is now a chartered cruise, booked guests must now adjust their travel plans.

“Since the Spectrum of the Seas sailing on June 14, 2024 has been chartered, your booking will be affected,” the notification email read. “We are fully aware of the time and effort you have put into this travel plan, so we are grateful to you. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

No details about why the ship has been chartered or what group has booked the vessel have been announced. Charter sailings are often arranged by large groups such as music festivals, corporations, lifestyle companies, and other organizations, though the arrangements are usually made much further in advance than just three months.

The 169,379-gross-ton, Quantum-Ultra-class Spectrum of the Seas is currently homeported from Singapore, but will be moving to Shanghai near the end of April 2024. In early December, the ship will move to homeport from Hong Kong through the holiday, before returning to Shanghai in mid-January. The ship can welcome 4,246 guests at double occupancy or up to 4,905 travelers when fully booked.

Alternatives for Booked Guests

Booked guests can choose from three options as compensation for their now-cancelled cruise: alternative sailings aboard Spectrum of the Seas, choosing any other Royal Caribbean International cruise, or a full refund.

If travelers still want to sail aboard Spectrum of the Seas, they can choose from eight alternative departure dates: May 17, May 26, May 31, June 9, June 23, June 28, August 29, or September 22.

Worth Reading: Future Celebrity Cruises Sailing Cancelled Due to Private Charter

Each of these alternative sailings is still a 5-night cruise, but the ports of call vary. Depending on the sailing date, Spectrum of the Seas will be visiting the same ports as the original itinerary, or other destinations such as Hakata/Fukuoka or Kagoshima in Japan. Of special note is that the August 29 sailing will visit Busan, South Korea.

If guests reschedule on one of the alternate Spectrum of the Seas sailings, their cruise fare is protected, though they will be responsible for any increases in port taxes or other fees. If travelers have airfare booked, their airfare will be adjusted to the new sailing date and the lowest flight price – either the original booking or the new booking – will be honored.

In addition, passengers who rebook aboard these Spectrum of the Seas options will also receive $100-200 (USD) per stateroom of onboard credit, with an extra $50 per person for the third and fourth travelers in multiple-occupancy staterooms, if applicable.

Guests who choose not to rebook aboard the alternative dates can opt for any other Royal Caribbean International sailing, on any ship in the fleet, without any rebooking fees, though they will need to pay for any difference in cruise fare. If the new fare is cheaper, the overpayment will be refunded to the original form of payment.

These travelers will also receive the same onboard credit offer of $100-200 per stateroom, depending on the type of stateroom booked.

Finally, if guests prefer to cancel their cruise vacation altogether, they may do so without any fee or penalty, and a full refund will be processed within 2-5 weeks back to the original form of payment. Refunds will be processed automatically unless passengers rebook their sailing before April 1, 2024.

Not the First Charter Cancellation

While it is certainly disappointing for travelers to have their vacation suddenly cancelled due to a full ship charter, these incidents do happen occasionally, though typically with more advance notice.

In December 2023, for example, Royal Caribbean notified booked guests that their April 26, 2024 sailing aboard Allure of the Seas was cancelled due to a full ship charter. Also, in December 2023, Norwegian Cruise Line notified guests that the February 6, 2025 sailing for Norwegian Joy was also cancelled for a full ship charter.

Unfortunately, the shorter notice for Spectrum of the Seas‘ cancellation may leave some travelers scrambling to make alternative plans if they are unable to rebook their sailing and they may have to take the refunds instead.
