Carnival Provides Update on Embarkation at Temporary Port

Carnival Cruise Line issued a guest advisory showing revised embarkation times for those booked on Carnival Legend’s next cruise.

The ship, which was homeported in Baltimore before this week’s tragic bridge collapse, is temporarily based in Norfolk, which has caused schedule changes and ground transportation challenges for some booked guests.

Carnival Legend Pushes Back Boarding Times

Carnival Cruise Line has alerted guests booked on Carnival Legend’s March 31, 2024 departure that embarkation times have been pushed back by two hours. This is to allow sufficient time for guests to travel to the ship’s new, temporary homeport of Norfolk, which is about 230 miles south of Baltimore and a 4-hour drive, depending on traffic.

On March 27, 2024, the cruise line announced that Carnival Legend would operate from Norfolk, since the Port of Baltimore has been closed since March 26, 2024, when the cargo ship Dali lost power and rammed the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to fully collapse. The tragedy has caused the deaths of six people and shut down the fifth-largest port on the US East Coast.

Carnival Legend’s current sailing departed Baltimore on March 24, 2024, and will now conclude in Norfolk rather than Baltimore. The cruise line is providing buses to transport guests on that sailing back to Baltimore.

The embarkation advisory regarding the ship’s March 31, 2024 departure includes the new embarkation times as well as the address of the Norfolk terminal and information about parking, for those guests who intend to drive themselves to the new embarkation port.

The line also will provide limited bus service for guests who need assistance. The revised embarkation schedule shows a delay of two hours for each 30-minute time slot.

For instance, guests who were to embark between noon and 12:30 p.m. now will embark between 2 and 2:30 p.m.; those scheduled to embark between 12:30 and 1 p.m. will now board the ship between 2:30 and 3 p.m., etc. All guests must be aboard the ship in Norfolk by 7:30 p.m.

We are making arrangements for a limited number of buses to transport guests who need assistance with transportation between Baltimore and Norfolk. Shuttle service will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. and the final shuttle will depart Baltimore at 2:30 p.m.,Colleen Oliverio, vice president of guest services for Carnival Cruise Line, wrote in the guest advisory.

She added that transportation will also be available from Norfolk to Baltimore at the conclusion of the sailing. The advisory requested booked guests complete a survey indicating their interest in bus transportation. The survey was due back to the cruise line by 5 p.m. on March 28 so that an appropriate number of shuttle buses could be arranged.

The advisory included a welcome bit of news for guests — a $100 onboard credit per stateroom to assuage cruisers’ frustration with the changes.

We know this is an unexpected change of plans and we appreciate your understanding. The entire Carnival Legend team is looking forward to welcoming you aboard for a fun and memorable cruise,Oliverio added.

The March 31, 2024, cruise aboard Carnival Legend is a 7-day Eastern Caribbean voyage with port calls at Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos; Half Moon Cay, Bahamas; and Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.

Royal Caribbean Ship Also Impacted by Port Closure

Carnival Cruise Line is not the only brand coping with the fallout at the Port of Baltimore. Royal Caribbean has one ship based at the port, the 2,416-guest Vision of the Seas, which left the port on March 23, 2024, on a 12-night Caribbean sailing. The cruise was due to return to Baltimore on April 4, 2024, but will instead conclude in Norfolk.

Also, Royal Caribbean has switched Vision of the Seas’ homeport to Norfolk, temporarily. Cruisers planning to sail on the ship’s next two 8-night Bahamas cruises, departing on April 4 and April 12, will embark and debark in Norfolk.

Virgin Voyages Backtracks on Two Port Cancellations

The people have spoken! Virgin Voyages reversed its decision to remove the French ports of Toulon and Marseille from Scarlet Lady’s summer itineraries after passengers expressed their dissatisfaction on social media.

Scarlet Lady Will Sail Summer Itineraries As Planned

On March 28, 2024, Virgin Voyages notified guests planning to sail on Scarlet Lady’s “Irresistible Med” and “French Daze & Ibiza Cruises” of a change to their itineraries. Instead of calling on Toulon, France, in the “Irresistible Med” cruise and Marseille, France, in the “French Daze” sailings, the port calls would become sea days.

In a letter to guests, the three-ship cruise line said that the decision was made based on recent passenger feedback, stating that it would give guests a chance to enjoy more of the amenities onboard Scarlet Lady, the first ship owned and operated by Virgin Voyages.

“Inspired by recent Sailor feedback and our commitment to ensuring you have the most extraordinary experience with us, we have decided to replace the port days in Toulon, France, and Marseille, France, with a day at sea,” read the cruise line’s letter.

“We recognize that this change may impact your expectations, and we assure you that it was made with your best interests in mind, allowing you more time to indulge in the countless offerings about our beautiful Lady Ship,” continued the letter.

Virgin Voyages also said they would automatically cancel and refund any shore excursions booked through the cruise line, and would refund port fees to travelers’ onboard accounts – totaling $11 for the “Irresistible Med” voyages and $21 for the “French Daze” sailings.

Unfortunately for the young cruise line, which launched in 2020, the guests who are scheduled to sail these itineraries did not take the news well. The sentiment across social media was annoyance and anger, with some saying the compensation wasn’t good enough and dissatisfaction with the reason behind the change.

Just hours later, Virgin Voyages chose to reinstate both port calls, likely because of the poor response online.

“We value both you, your Sailors, and your feedback – so after listening to your concerns, we’re reinstating the stop in Marseille. Your Sailors can now continue to look forward to experiencing the vibrant culture and stunning views in Marseille as they originally had planned,” read an email from Virgin Voyages

The port stop in Toulon was also re-added to the “Irresistible Med” itineraries.

All About Scarlet Lady’s Summer In Europe

The 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady, which is currently offering a series of Bahamas cruises based out of Miami, has a big summer ahead of her. On April 21, the 110,000-gross ton ship will embark on a 14-day Transatlantic voyage from Miami to Barcelona.

Scarlet Lady will homeport in Barcelona, Spain, for the summer, from where she will offer the “Irresistible Med” and “French Daze & Ibiza Nights” itineraries – both of which are 7-night round-trip cruises. The sailings will be offered between May and September.

Assuming there are no other changes, the first cruise of the summer season will sail the “Irresistible Med” itinerary beginning on May 5, 2024. During the voyage, passengers will visit Toulon, France; Carrara, Italy; Ajaccio, Corsica; and Ibiza, Spain.

The 7-night “French Daze” cruise will be up next, with the first of many embarking from Barcelona on May 12. These sailings will call on Marseille, France; Cannes, France; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Ibiza, Spain, before returning to Barcelona.

Royal Caribbean Confirms Homeport Switch After Bridge Collapse

Another cruise ship has been impacted by the Baltimore Bridge Collapse. Due to the ongoing investigation and damage to the cruise port, Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has been re-routed to Norfolk, Virginia, for its current and upcoming cruises.

Vision of the Seas Temporarily Moves to New Homeport

Current and soon-to-be guests of Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas will need to make some last minute alterations to their travel plans. Cruisers planning to sail on the next two 8-night Bahamas Cruises, which will begin on April 4 and April 12, will now be embarking and disembarking in Norfolk, Virginia, instead of Baltimore, Maryland.

The Vision-Class ship’s current 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing, which embarked on March 23 and was meant to be a round-trip sailing to and from Baltimore, will also now be concluding in Norfolk on April 4.

The Port of Baltimore remains closed after a catastrophic incident occurred on March 26, 2024, in which a large cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed upon impact. No timeline has been given for when the port will reopen to cruise traffic.

In light of the recent events, Vision of the Seas will be temporarily homeported in Norfolk instead of Baltimore, where the 78,340-gross ton ship was supposed to be based well into 2025. The change comes just one day after Carnival Cruise Line announced it would also be temporarily moving operations from Baltimore to Norfolk for the same reason.

After the April 12 sailing concludes, the ship will return to the Bahamas for routine maintenance. It is unclear if the ship will then be able to return to Baltimore, from where she is supposed to resume service with a series of 5 to 9-night Bermuda cruises at the end of May.

“Due to the impact of the tragic collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, on Thursday, April 4, Vision of the Seas will now complete its current cruise in Norfolk, Virginia,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told CruiseHive.

“For Vision’s upcoming April 4 and April 12 cruises, the ship will sail from Norfolk. After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to The Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance,” the spokesperson added.

Aside from the change in home port, Vision of the Seas’ current sailing remains otherwise unaffected. Before the cruise concludes, the 2,514-passenger vessel will still call on Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; and Basseterre, St. Kitts.

Similarly, the sailing beginning on April 4 will still call on Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida; Freeport (Grand Island), Bahamas; Nassau, Bahamas; and Cococay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas, as planned.

The April 12 itinerary is also unchanged, but will be calling on Charleston, South Carolina, instead of CocoCay, which was planned.

Royal Caribbean Compensates Passengers For Change

Norfolk’s cruise port is located approximately 236 miles away from Baltimore’s Cruise Port, which equates to a four hour car-ride or a one hour flight. As an act of good faith, Royal Caribbean is compensating passengers for the inconvenience caused by the last-minute change in travel plans.

“Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations,” said the Royal Caribbean’s spokesperson. “Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements.”

Cruisers currently onboard or soon-to-be onboard Vision of the Seas who booked flights and/or transfers directly through Royal Caribbean will have their travel arrangements automatically rescheduled, with their new travel details emailed shortly.

Guests who booked their airfare or other travel accommodations independently are encouraged to reach out to their providers as soon as possible. The cruise line is also reimbursing guests for pre-scheduled transportation, as well as new arrangements that have to be made.

The cruise line will cover up to $200 per person for domestic transportation, such as flights, train tickets, bus fares, or rental cars, and $400 per person for international travel. Additionally, cruisers can claim up to $200 for any new travel that has to be booked by emailing their receipts to the cruise line.

Additionally, guests currently onboard will be given access to free Wi-Fi and phone calls so they can adjust their travel arrangements without incurring extra costs.

NCL to Upgrade Venues During Ship’s Transatlantic Cruise

Norwegian Cruise Line is reaching out to guests booked on one of its upcoming transatlantic repositioning voyages with updates and changes to several onboard activities and services.

The cruise, on Norwegian Viva, will sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Lisbon, Portugal, as the Prima-class ship prepares for her summer season in the Mediterranean.

Several Public Spaces Will Close Aboard Norwegian Viva

In a notice to cruisers just a week before their transatlantic cruise departs San Juan, Puerto Rico, Norwegian Cruise Line informed guests that several popular areas aboard Norwegian Viva will receive enhancements and will not be available during their voyage.

The 3,100-guest ship, which joined the Norwegian fleet after her November 2023 christening ceremony in Miami, is set to depart on a 19-day transatlantic repositioning cruise on April 7, 2024.

During the crossing, Norwegian Viva’s Speedway Bar will be converted into Entourage, a dedicated space for youngsters ages 13 to 17 that several of the cruise line’s other ships offer. Currently, Norwegian Viva has no dedicated space offering age-appropriate activities for teens.

Also, closed areas will include part of the ship’s Galaxy Pavilion, a virtual reality game space; the Tee-Time mini-golf course; The Bull’s Eye, a game space featuring digital darts; The Stadium gaming space; and The Wave, a popular water slide.

The cruise line’s notice included an apology to guests for the changes, but provided no details about the planned enhancements. In the case of Entourage, the allocation of space could possibly be due to a higher than usual number of teenagers booked on the voyage.

As part of our commitment to continuously offer extraordinary vacation experiences for our guests around the world, and to uphold a consistent world-class product across our fleet, Norwegian Viva will be undergoing some enhancements during your cruise, the notice states.

The cruise line advised that, if any of the areas can be reopened during the voyage, there will be announcements to guests. Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line pointed out that many other activities and entertainment will be available on the crossing.

Rest assured, there will still be plenty of activities available to entertain you during your days at sea, including the Speedway, The Drop, The Rush, the Aqua Park and so much more, the notice added.

Norwegian Viva has been operating a series of 7-night Caribbean cruises from San Juan since shortly after her christening. Port calls included the Virgin Islands, Antigua, and Barbados. Following her summer in the Mediterranean, the ship will return to San Juan in the fall of 2024.

Transatlantic Crossing Offers Five Sea Days

The ship’s upcoming transatlantic sailing calls at several Caribbean destinations, including St. Thomas, USVI; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; St. Maarten; St. Lucia; and Barbados, before spending four days at sea.

The ship will call at Cape Verde for two days and then have another sea day before reaching the Canary Islands. Other ports of call will include Agadir and Casablanca, Morocco, and Cadiz Seville, Spain, before concluding in Lisbon on April 26.

After her arrival in the Mediterranean, Norwegian Viva will sail a wide array of cruises of varying lengths. In May the ship will sail 10-day voyages from Athens and Rome, calling at the Greek Islands and at ports in the French and Italian Rivieras. Several voyages offer 1- and 2-night post-cruise land tours in destinations such as Athens and Rome.

10-day sailings in June and August from Lisbon and Rome will feature destinations in Spain, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Sicily, and Malta.

Disney Treasure Floats to Make Way for Sister Ship

Meyer Werft Shipyard buzzed with activity as Disney Treasure floated for the first time, paving the way for the upcoming Disney Destiny.

Disney Treasure Floats at the Shipyard

Disney Cruise Line marked a pivotal moment with an initial float of its latest ship, the 144,000 gross ton Disney Treasure, from its initial construction dock at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, to a new location at the shipyard.

It’s not the typical official float ceremony, as the vessel still remains inside the construction hall. The relocation of Disney Treasure allows the next phase of its construction to commence and makes room for construction to begin on Disney Treasure’s sister ship, Disney Destiny.

Disney shared the landmark event on Disney Treasure’s official ship’s log. “Water from the Ems River was pumped into the building dock where the ship is being constructed, lifting the hull from the floor of the chamber. The shipyard team was then able to guide the Disney Treasure to a new location, where it will undergo the next phase of construction.”

The relocation of the 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure will allow the ship to complete the final construction phases ahead of the ship’s anticipated debut in December 2024.

The moment the vessel makes its way outside the construction hall will be the next major milestone. This will be when avid fans get the first chance to see the vessel as a whole, which is often a major event at the popular German shipyard.

Key Milestones in Construction

The journey to bring Disney Treasure to life at Meyer Werft Shipyard began with the ceremonial steel cutting on January 19, 2023, marking the official start of the build. As construction has progressed, the first of Disney’s iconic red funnels arrived at the shipyard from Poland on February 9, 2023, starting to shape the vessel’s distinctive silhouette.

By March 22, 2023, the shipbuilding process advanced with the delivery of the Floating Engine Room Unit (FERU) from Rostock, Germany. This module houses the ship’s main motors and liquified natural gas tanks.

Disney Treasure Construction

The significant event was followed by the Keel-Laying Ceremony on March 30, 2023, during which a coin featuring Captain Minnie Mouse was placed under the keel for good fortune, as is tradition in shipbuilding.

On April 15, 2023, Disney Treasure’s bow artwork, featuring a portrait of Minnie Mouse, was unveiled. This artwork is a longstanding tradition within the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The installation of the bow began shortly after, on April 18, 2023, with its competition and final reveal on February 12, 2024.

Interior construction has included the ship’s entertainment spaces, most notably, The Walt Disney Theatre. Designed to host original Broadway-style productions, Disney revealed a new show “Disney: The Tale of Moana,” will debut exclusively onboard Disney Treasure. The original production is inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios film, “Moana.”

Disney Treasure’s installation of the bridge block, which houses the command center, began June 26, 2023, with stern artwork revealed a month later. The stern showcases Peter Pan and Captain Hook sculptures, reinforcing the ship’s adventure theme.

By December 14, 2023, the completion of the final block symbolized the structural completion of Disney Treasure. This phase allowed for the addition of thematic spaces, like the Haunted Mansion Parlor, ahead of the float out.

Maiden Voyages to the Caribbean

When Disney Treasure debuts, passengers can enjoy 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from its Port Canaveral homeport. Its Western route will feature calls in Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Disney’s Castaway Cay, the private island playground of Disney Cruise Line.

Its Eastern voyages will call on Tortola, British Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Like its sister ships, Disney Treasure will feature waterslides, splash zones, and wading pools; movie screenings; a Royal Court Royal Tea party; Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique; The Pirate’s League; fireworks at sea; and character experiences.

Carnival Cruise Line Completes Roll Out of Digital Debark

Carnival Cruise Line has achieved a new milestone in guest services by extending its Digital Debarkation program to every ship in its North American fleet.

North American Carnival Sailings Employ Digital Debarkation

After much anticipation, Carnival Cruise Line has released its Digital Debark program across the entire North American fleet. The release comes after successful trials and positive guest feedback on select ships.

Available via the Carnival Hub app, Digital Debark enables passengers to schedule their debarkation time, reducing crowds and wait times on the final morning of the cruise. It also provides passengers with more control over when they choose to leave the ship.

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador, enthusiastically announced the full fleet rollout. “We now have the digital debarkation system available on every ship sailing from North America.”

Digital Debark began testing out the new service in late November on Carnival Spirit sailings from Mobile, Alabama; Carnival Conquest sailings from Miami; Carnival Dream sailings from Galveston, Texas; and Carnival Elation voyages from Jacksonville, Florida.

It was met with such success that Carnival Cruise Line expanded it to more ships in December, appearing on Carnival Sunrise out of Charlestown, South Carolina; Carnival Dream out of Galveston, Texasand Mardi Gras out of Port Canaveral (Orlando)before expanding to Carnival Breeze out of Fort Lauderdale and Carnival Panorama out of Los Angeles.

The program has now expanded to all ships sailing from North America, including the new Carnival Jubilee out of Galveston; Carnival Pride out of Baltimore; Carnival Glory out of New Orleans; Carnival Radiance out of Long Beach, California; Carnival Miracle out of Los Angeles; and Carnival Liberty, which sails out of Port Canaveral, and Carnival Magic, out of Miami.

Carnival Firenze, which was just transferred over from Costa, and Carnival Paradise from Tampa, which just completed its dry dock, have also received the program. Carnival Freedom, which recently suffered damage from a fire that cancelled two sailings, will also feature the program when it is repaired.

How Digital Debark Works

Through the Carnival Hub app, guests can now effortlessly plan their debarkation by selecting from two options in the My Planner feature. Both options provide approximate debarkation windows.

“Express Debarkation” works for those carrying their own luggage who wish to leave the ship early, while “Checked Luggage” provides options for passengers who need assistance with handling luggage.

Express Debarkation participants are reminded that no luggage tags are required as they will handle their luggage personally. For passengers choosing the Checked Luggage option, detailed instructions guide them through the process of luggage tag collection, including how many luggage tags are needed, placement times of luggage outside staterooms, and debarkation day procedures.

Each option allows guests to choose multiple travelers needed to disembark, including a simple option of selecting all guests in the same stateroom at once, as well as a way to ask for special assistance.

Passengers will be given a choice of disembarkation times with 20-minute windows. Upon scheduling debarkation through the app, guests receive confirmation of their chosen time slot and any necessary instructions for their selected option.

It’s important to highlight that the Digital Debark system does not alter the debarkation process for passengers entitled to priority debarkation privileges.

This group comprises Diamond and Platinum members of the cruise line’s VIFP loyalty program, guests staying in suite accommodations, and those who have opted for the Faster to Fun program. These passengers will continue to receive onboard letters detailing their specific debarkation instructions.

How Is the Baltimore Bridge Collapse Impacting Cruises?

In the early morning hours of March 26, 2024, a container ship experiencing technical difficulties crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.

As an integral part of port infrastructure, the Port of Baltimore was forced to close to maritime traffic after the accident, pending an investigation and repairs.

Cruise Ships Bound for Baltimore Forced to Re-Route

At approximately 12:30 a.m. local time, a large container ship, named Dali, collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. The 948-foot-long shipping vessel hit the bridge with such force that it collapsed.

While the cause of the accident is not yet confirmed, it appears that Dali was experiencing technical difficulties shortly before impacting the bridge. Surveillance video captured the ship losing power and smoking in the moments before the collision.

A search and rescue mission is currently underway – and there will also be an investigation into the incident and repairs to be made. The Port of Baltimore will remain closed to cruise traffic until further notice while these tasks are completed – which is a problem for cruise ships planning to sail to Baltimore in the near future.

So far, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are the most immediately affected, with potential for Norwegian Cruise Line itineraries to be impacted later in the year.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has been offering a series of round-trip Caribbean cruises from Baltimore, and is currently on a 12-night Caribbean cruise to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; and Basseterre, St. Kitts. The sailing began on March 23 and is supposed to return to Baltimore on April 4.

The 2,050-guest ship is then supposed to offer a series of Bahamas and Bermuda-bound cruises from Baltimore throughout the summer. The Vision-Class ship is then meant to pivot to Canada and New England cruises in late August, still homeported in Baltimore.

On March 29, the cruise line announced its plan to temporarily change Vision of the Seas’ home port to Norfolk:

Royal Caribbean stated to Cruise Hive, “Due to the impact of the tragic collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, on Thursday, April 4, Vision of the Seas will now complete its current cruise in Norfolk, Virginia. Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements.

For Vision’s upcoming April 4 and April 12 cruises, the ship will sail from Norfolk. Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations. After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to The Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance, the cruise line added.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Legend, which has been offering a series of round-trip Bahamas cruises from Baltimore, was forced to temporarily change its homeport to Norfolk, Virginia. The Spirit-Class 2,124-passenger vessel, which is currently on a round-trip Bahamas cruise that began on March 24, was due to return to Baltimore on March 31.

The originally planned port calls to the Bimini islands, Bahamas; Nassau, Bahamas; and Freeport, Bahamas; will not be affected by the port closure, but cruisers will be ending their trip in Norfolk. The cruise line will provide guests with a free bus pass to Baltimore upon disembarkation.

Additionally, guests on the next Carnival Legend cruise based out of Baltimore, which is a round-trip, 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing beginning on March 31, have also been notified that their homeport has changed.

“Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. It will now return to Norfolk on Sunday, and guests will be provided complimentary bus service back to Baltimore. Carnival Legend’s next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will then operate from and return to Norfolk,” read a press release from Carnival.

The following Baltimore-based cruises for the 88,500-gross ton ship, which include an 8-night Eastern Caribbean sailing on April 7 and a 12-night Transatlantic cruise from Baltimore to Barcelona, Spain, on April 15, are also likely to be affected.

Another ship from Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Pride, may also be impacted depending on how long the port stays closed. Beginning on April 7, the 2,124-guest ship is meant to embark on a 14-night Southern Caribbean sailing that visits Aruba, Barbados, Antigua, and St. Maarten before arriving in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 21. The Spirit-Class ship is then supposed to alternate between a series of 7-night Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas based out of Baltimore.

As of now, Carnival has not commented on Carnival Pride’s future itineraries.

The Impact On The Port Of Baltimore

The port of Baltimore, which is located within Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, boasts the region’s deepest harbor and is a pivotal maritime gateway – not just for cruise ships, but also for shipping vessels.

The collision won’t just take a toll on the port, but on the economy as a whole. Each year, the port contributes more than $63 million in revenue to the local economy. When including cargo ships in the calculations, that number skyrockets to $2-3 billion.

Baltimore Cruise Terminal
Baltimore Cruise Terminal

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the cruise port was initially expecting to receive 115 calls throughout 2024, mostly from Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Ships, but also from Norwegian Cruise Line in the fall.

That number is higher for cargo and shipping vessels, with more than 50 ocean carriers making nearly 2,000 trips to the port annually. According to the office of Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the Port of Baltimore handled 52 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, valued at approximately $80 billion.

As part of that, the Port of Baltimore also provides thousands of jobs in shipping and cruise tourism operations. While no layoffs or furloughs have happened yet, they could become a possibility depending on how long the port remains closed.

Thankfully, the port is still able to process shipments via truck so it’s not at a complete stand still, but the harbor will remain closed to all maritime traffic for the foreseeable future. With the search and rescue mission still underway, it’s too soon to really understand the extent of the damage.

Some sources report that it can take years to fully repair a bridge like the Francis Scott Key Bridge, but the hope is that the port will be operational much sooner, even if the bridge itself isn’t finished.

Carnival Changes Homeport After Bridge Collapse

Due to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, Carnival Cruise Line has announced it is temporarily moving its operations from the city to Norfolk. This already impacts at least one Carnival cruise ship.

Carnival Moves Operations from Baltimore to Norfolk

With the situation developing in Baltimore with the collapsed bridge, along with search and rescue operations, Carnival Cruise Line has moved its port operations to Norfolk, Virginia. This comes as all traffic through the port has been halted.

Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk,” Duffy added.

This impacts guests of the Spirit-class Carnival Legend, including those on upcoming sailings. The current sailing, which departed Baltimore on March 24, will no longer return to the homeport as originally scheduled. The vessel will now return to Norfolk instead on Sunday, March 31.

The seven-night Bahamas itinerary still features all the original calls, including Bimini on March 27 and Freeport on March 29. When the Carnival Legend docks in Norfolk, the cruise line will provide passengers with a complimentary bus back to the Port of Baltimore, which is approximately 376km north (3.49-hour ride via vehicle).

How Will Carnival Pride Be Impacted?

Like Carnival Legend, Carnival Pride could also be impacted by the aftermath of the bridge collapse. Carnival Pride, one of the oldest ships in the fleet, is scheduled to sail to Baltimore in April after it concludes a series of Western Caribbean cruises based out of Tampa, Florida.

Beginning on April 7, the 2,124-guest ship is meant to embark on a 14-night Southern Caribbean sailing that visits Aruba, Barbados, Antigua, and St. Maarten before arriving in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 21. The Spirit-Class ship is then supposed to alternate between a series of 7-night Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas cruises roundtrip from Baltimore.

Given the severity of the damage, it’s unclear when the Baltimore Cruise Port will reopen for cruise traffic, but it could be weeks to months. As of the time of publication, Carnival has not commented on whether Carnival Pride’s future sailings will be re-routed at this time.

What Caused The Bridge Collapse?

In the early morning of Tuesday, March 26, 2024, a large shipping vessel named Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is an integral part of the port’s infrastructure. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight when Dali deviated from its course and hit the bridge.

The video of the collision shows the 948-foot-long container ship losing power in the moments before the crash. When the lights came back on, smoke exuded from the vessel. Perhaps because the ship also lost its navigational capacities during the power outage, it immediately crashed into the bridge, which collapsed upon impact.

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation and the port is closed to cruise traffic until further notice. Search and rescue operations are also currently underway.
