Passenger Loses Out on Antarctica Cruise Over Lost Luggage

A sailing to Antarctica is a dream trip for many cruise travelers. For one UK guest, however, her trip quickly turned into a nightmare while she was still more than 8,800 miles from the southernmost continent on the planet.

Due to a crowded plane, missing luggage, and unreachable personal items, Valerie Coleshaw was unable to set sail on her Antarctic getaway.

Coleshaw had booked a HX (Formerly named Hurtigruten Expeditions) sailing to Antarctica departing in February 2023, but when she arrived at the Manchester Airport, her cruise plans began to sink. She was flying with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines but was informed that the plane was full, and she was asked to check her carry-on bag.

KLM permits travelers to have one carry-on bag and one accessory item, such as a purse or laptop, provided both bags fit specific dimensions and have a combined weight allowance. If passengers are flying in Premium Comfort or Business class, they are permitted slightly more baggage for carry-on.

As most airlines will do if a flight is extremely full, however, travelers may be asked to check their carry-on items at no cost. Coleshaw agreed after being assured that the bag would be returned to her after reaching Amsterdam for her layover. From Amsterdam, her next flight was to have been to Buenos Aires.

Upon arriving in Amsterdam after the 80-minute flight, however, Coleshaw discovered her bag was missing. In it was prescription asthma medication and her paperwork to join the cruise. Without knowing where those items were and not certain whether they would be returned, Coleshaw was unable to continue on her trip.

It is unclear why Coleshaw did not have a smaller purse or bag to take onto the plane with her, where she could have placed those critical items. KLM advises travelers to use a smaller bag in case of limited overhead bin space if carry-on bags need to be checked.

“We advise you to pack any travel essentials such as medicines in your smaller bag, just in case,” the airline’s website states.

According to the Independent, Coleshaw claims she was not advised to remove any essentials from her bag as it was being checked.

“I had no additional handbag in which to store my documents, tickets and asthma spray. I had only a mobile phone, credit card and passport in my pocket,” she said. “No one ever suggested to me to remove my medication, tickets, holiday reservation, emergency contact details and so on. Had they done so, I would have taken my hand luggage on board.”

Coleshaw was given hotel vouchers and a return flight to Manchester the following day, losing the nearly $14,000 (USD) cruise fare in the process.

Dispute With the Cruise Line

In the months following the fiasco, Coleshaw has battled with Hurtigruten about refunds and vouchers. As she had booked the entire travel package through the cruise line, if the airline is at fault, she would be entitled to a full refund.

The cruise line did offer her limited vouchers at first, but a replacement African cruise she had booked was cancelled. Now, her personal circumstances have changed, and she no longer feels comfortable booking such an expensive trip.

“We are disappointed that we have been unable to resolve this current issue to date. Our guest experience team have been in direct contact with Ms Coleshaw for several months now and we have worked hard to try and find a resolution to this situation,” a cruise line spokesperson said.

Ultimately, Hurtigruten did offer a future cruise credit for the full cost of Coleshaw’s lost Antarctica sailing, an offer that exceeds their standard cancellation policy. The rebooking deadline has also been extended to give her the greatest opportunity to find a vacation she can enjoy.

Coleshaw has not stated whether or not she will be planning another once-in-a-lifetime vacation within the time frame available.

MSC Cruises Will Bring a Second Ship to Homeport in Port Canaveral

MSC Cruises has announced the expansion of its fleet at Port Canaveral (Orlando), introducing MSC Grandiosa alongside the already popular MSC Seashore.

Starting in December 2025, this marks the first time the cruise line will operate two ships simultaneously from the Central Florida port and the first time MSC Grandiosa will be based in North America.

“We are honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa. We are so proud of our cruise partner and their tremendous growth in the United States,” said Captain John Murray, CEO of Port Canaveral.  “We look forward to welcoming all of their valued cruise guests to our beautiful port.”

Ruben A. Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises USA, highlighted the significance of the expansion, saying, “The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that.”

He continued, “We know people sailing from Central Florida want options, and we’re delighted to offer them two of our most modern and glamourous ships with itineraries that will appeal to everyone from first-time to seasoned cruisers.”

MSC Grandiosa will embark on 7-night voyages that cover both the Eastern and Western Caribbean. It will join MSC Seashore, which offers shorter 3—and 4-night sailings focusing primarily on The Bahamas, including stops at MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

A New Caribbean Chapter for MSC Grandiosa

MSC Grandiosa, which debuted in 2019, has spent its seasons primarily based in the Mediterranean, where the 181,541-gross-ton ship is currently sailing 7-night Western Mediterranean voyages. The ship will complete its final 2025 Mediterranean journey on November 8 in Genoa, Italy, before repositioning to Florida.

When MSC Grandiosa arrives at Port Canaveral next year, it will mark a significant milestone as the largest ship of MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia-plus class to homeport there. The ship boasts impressive dimensions at 1,094 feet in length and 141 feet in width, providing ample space for its 2,421 staterooms.

Scheduled to embark on 7-night itineraries, guests can choose between an Eastern or Western Caribbean itinerary. The Eastern voyages will include stops at Nassau and Ocean Cay in The Bahamas, Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Conversely, the Western Caribbean journeys will include calls at Nassau, The Bahamas; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; George Town, Cayman Islands; Montego Bay and Falmouth, Jamaica; and Belize City, Belize.

Aboard the MSC Grandiosa, which can accommodate 6,334 passengers alongside 1,704 crew members, guests have 10 restaurant options, including the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Teppanyaki, and L’Atelier Bistrot.

For leisure and relaxation, the ship features five pools and nine hot tubs, as well as the Wild Forest Aquapark, which continues a thrilling family adventure from the Orlando area renowned for its theme parks.

North American travelers can also enjoy the expansive MSC Aurea Spa, nightly entertainment at the Carousel Lounge and Broadway-style theater, and the 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade, topped with an LED sky screen, which creates an atmospheric shopping and strolling environment.

MSC Grandiosa will replace MSC Seashore by offering 7-night cruises, allowing MSC Seashore to offer shorter itineraries. It is currently sailing 7- and 14-night voyages to Nassau, Montego Bay, George Town, Cozumel, San Juan, and Puerto Plata/Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.

Unrest in Noumea Prompts Cruise Line Alerts, Potential Itinerary Changes

Following recent unrest in Noumea, New Caledonia, a French overseas territory located in the South Pacific, Carnival Cruise Line Australia has expressed concern regarding its upcoming voyages’ safety and operations.

The cruise line released a statement on social media emphasizing its proactive measures in response to the volatile situation taking place on the island nation, which has led to extensive rioting that has seen vehicles and businesses set ablaze and widespread looting.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Noumea and surrounding areas, and are in contact with the relevant authorities both here and in New Caledonia,” Carnival Cruise Line Australia stated. “Should we need to make any changes to upcoming itineraries due to the current situation, we will notify guests and travel agents as soon as possible.”

The situation casts uncertainty over several scheduled cruises in the region, primarily those operated by Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises, both subsidiaries of Carnival Corporation. These include multiple voyages set to visit Noumea in the coming days through the end of June.

Among the impacted sailings could be P&O Cruises’ 10-night “Discover Vanuatu” cruise aboard Pacific Adventure, which departed from Sydney on May 13, 2024. The 2,632-passenger ship is expected to call in Noumea on May 20 during the roundtrip sailing.

Similarly, Carnival Cruise Line’s 9-night “South Pacific” voyage aboard Carnival Splendor, which launches on May 19 from Sydney, includes multiple stops in New Caledonia. The 3,012-passenger ship is scheduled to arrive in Noumea on May 22 before visiting Mystery Island, Vanuatu, on May 23. It will then return to New Caledonia to call in Lifou on May 24 and Noumea again on May 25.

The Australian government, which has temporarily closed its embassy in Noumea, has issued a travel alert for New Caledonia.

“We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel for metropolitan Noumea due to civil unrest, travel disruptions and limited essential services. We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution elsewhere in New Caledonia due to protests and travel disruptions.”

Escalating Tensions in New Caledonia

Noumea, a cruise stop that offers a unique blend of French elegance and Pacific Island charm, boasts beautiful bays, sunny beaches, and vibrant city life. It’s also the largest city on the island nation, its capital, and the administrative center.

The French government declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia on May 15 following a violent outbreak connected to a controversial electoral reform bill. The May 14 approved bill, created by French lawmakers, alters voting eligibility for provincial elections and permits French residents who have lived in the island nation for at least 10 years to vote.

Some perceive the bill as a means of diluting indigenous influence in local governance. The Kanaks represent the largest ethnic group in New Caledonia. Living in tribal societies governed by chieftains until New Caledonia became a French colony in 1853, the people continuously pushed for independence into the late 20th century.

The current turmoil has led to tragic losses, with three Kanak and a police officer killed amidst the unrest. A curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. has been implemented, and La Tontouta International Airport, along with schools and government officers, have been closed. Additionally, France has banned the use of TikTok and public gatherings in an effort to control mob violence.

The state of emergency has been set for 12 days, extending into the dates P&O Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line are set to arrive with passengers.

New Study Reveals Where People Would Like to Cruise the Most

It’s no secret that cruising has become increasingly popular, with recent research from AllClear finding that 66% of people are considering a cruise as their next vacation. But where do potential cruisers want to go?

By analyzing online search data for over 100 popular cruising destinations, the study found that Alaska tops the list of the most sought-after cruises in the US. In fact, Alaska is the top trending cruise destination for 39 out of 50 states.

Indeed, this year’s Alaska season is proving to be particularly busy, so it’s not surprising to see the high interest, with cruise lines experiencing a significant surge in bookings.

Where People Dream of Cruising to the Most
Where People Dream of Cruising to the Most

In January of 2024, Princess Cruises announced a record breaking 20% increase in its Alaska bookings – the highest in the cruise line’s history for this time period. Similarly, Holland America Line had its best single-day booking record and best booking week in January, with Alaska cruises making up a substantial one-third of the new bookings.

In fact, Alaska has become so popular that ports like Juneau, Alaska, are working to limit the amount of cruise passengers that can visit per day in order to best accommodate cruisers and maintain quality of life for the locals.

Juneau has a population of approximately 31,685 residents, but on a busy weekend, cruise passengers can increase this number to upwards of 21,000, which is more than half of the local population.

After Alaska, the study revealed that the rankings for America’s favorite cruise destinations are as follows: The Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Mississippi River, expedition cruises to Antarctica, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Transatlantic sailings, the Seine River, and the Rhine River.

While the US specific findings are certainly fascinating, AllClear didn’t just focus its research on America. Instead, the study authors analyzed search volumes between April 2023 and March 2024 from 44 countries around the world.

When the data is aggregated at a global level, Caribbean cruises are the most sought after sailings world wide, garnering over 2.8 million searches in the past year.

Mediterranean cruises are next with over 2.1 million searches, followed by Alaska cruises in third with approximately 1.8 million searches.

Rank Cruise Destination/Type No. of searches (April 2023 – March 2024)
Caribbean Cruise 2,824,180
Mediterranean Cruise 2,146,670
Alaska Cruise 1,804,940
Nile River Cruise 1,025,830
Antarctica Cruise 969,670
Seine River Cruise 695,040
Norwegian Fjords Cruise 674,230
Danube River Cruise 548,840
Mississippi River Cruise 462,580
10 Hawaii Cruise 454,670
11 Around The World Cruises 424,920
12 Rhine River Cruise 416,320
13 Greek Isles Cruise 409,470
14 Douro River Cruise 363,060
15 Panama Canal Cruise 342,420
16 Transatlantic Cruise 339,180

18 Great Lakes Cruise 168,580
19 Baltic Sea Cruise 153,360

But just like Americans prioritize Alaska sailings, there is some interesting variation by country. For example, Mexico, South Africa, and the UK are most drawn to Caribbean sailings, while travelers in Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic put the Nile River at the top of their most-wanted list.

Over in Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, potential cruises are most interested in sailing to the crystal clear waters and coral reefs of Morocco. And in Japan, passengers don’t want to pick a single destination, instead showing more interest in “around the world cruises” that let them see it all.

“It’s fascinating to see the number of travelers eager to set sail on unforgettable journeys around the world’s oceans, seas, and rivers. From the beautiful islands of Greece to chilly Antarctica, it’s been fantastic to see such a rise in interest in cruising holidays taking place all over the world in recent years,” said Letitia Smith, Head of Communications at AllClear.

Cruising is progressively seen as more of an obtainable way to travel among first-time cruisers, and depending on the cruise line, a more budget-friendly option to see the world.

Not only are many modern cruise ships all-inclusive, but future guests can often space out the cost of the cruise over time with payment plans.

10 Worst Cruise Fails You Can Prepare For

Lots can go wrong when you travel, as any avid traveler will tell you. There’s so much that’s out of your control. Weather, transportation, your fellow travelers — they can all somehow wreak havoc on your carefully laid plans. However, that said, there are some travel disasters that you can prepare for ahead of time, and thus decrease the likelihood of something actually going wrong.

These are our top 10 worst cruise fails — all of which you can prepare for ahead of time.

Missing the Cruise Ship

Really, you missed the cruise ship? That’s rookie mistake number one! All you had to do was show up! We joke — it happens to the best of us. Plenty of people have either missed the cruise ship or witnessed others missing it.

You can take some measures, though, to try to ensure that you don’t miss the cruise ship before it departs.

For one, as one Reddit user suggests, don’t try to be cheap and not spend money on a hotel in the port city, the night before your cruise. This user’s friend wanted to arrive in the port city the day their ship was set to depart, and when a flight delay occurred, they ended up missing the ship completely. To be safe, you want to arrive for embarkation the night before, and spend the night in a hotel, so you’re ready to leave when the ship is.

Luckily, lots of hotels in popular cruise port cities recognize you’ll need to stay overnight before your cruise departs, so they’ll often offer pre- and post-cruise bundles that include a stay, breakfast and sometimes even a ride to the port.

For example, the Miami Airport South Hampton Inn & Suites offers a park and sail package that includes one-way transportation to the Port of Miami, free parking for up to seven nights and breakfast.

Of course, missing the cruise ship isn’t a problem that’s relegated to your initial departure. You can also miss the cruise ship when you’ve disembarked at one of your destinations.

To help avoid this, keep the ship’s time in mind when you’re in the port of call (the ship’s time will differ depending on the cruise line and where you’re at, but it’s the time all the ship’s clocks are set to, and the time that the ship operates on; you’ll want to operate on it, too).

Also, remember that ship schedules are strict, and there’s not a lot of wiggle room between when the ship requests passengers return and when the ship sets sail (often about 30 minutes). That’s not a big grace period — and cruise ship captains won’t hesitate to leave you behind, if that’s what’s best for the other cruisers.

Lastly, always keep your passport handy (not a passport card or some other form of identification), to make getting onto and off the ship easy, as well as so you’ll have it in case you do miss the ship in a foreign locale.

Leaving Behind Travel Documents

And on that note, one of the worst cruising fails you could make? You make it to the port, you’re ready to board the cruise ship, you start digging around in your bag and… you realize that you left your travel documents at home.

This is a mere matter of organization, but if you know that organization is not your strong suit, use a travel packing list and check it twice (or more) before you leave the house.

Celebrity Cruises offers a cruise-specific packing list, which specifically mentions the documents you’ll want to bring with you. At the end of the article, there’s a handy bulleted list that you can print and check off, as you pack.

Getting Seasick

Your first cruise is a terrible time to learn that you get seasick. However, for medical purposes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups seasickness in with general motion sickness, so if you feel nauseous on trains or airplanes, in cars, or while on amusement park rides, chances are good that you’re going to get seasick, too.

However, there’s good news: You can still enjoy cruising even if you’re someone who gets motion sick. In a Reddit thread, frequent cruisers offered a bevy of tips on how they personally cruise and deal with motion sickness.

Multiple people mentioned that they take the medication Bonine, also sometimes called meclizine and that it’s a “life saver.” Take a tablet a day starting two days before your cruise and throughout it, and you’ll supposedly have no problems. Dramamine is also a favorite, as are motion sickness bracelets and patches.

Others also mention that location matters — both the cruise’s location and your cabin’s location on the cruise ship. One cruiser said they only get seasick when cruising on the Pacific, due to the rougher waters, while the consensus seems to be that seasickness is less of an issue in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, it’s pretty common knowledge that if you get a cabin lower down, mid-ship, you’ll experience less rocking.

Also, the bigger the cruise ship, the less rocking.

So Many Cabin Problems

You arrive at your cabin and it’s nothing like what the cruise line promised you, on its website. Maybe it’s cramped or outdated (those online photos could be quite old, after all). There’s water leaking in, or your balcony has no view at all. Maybe there’s nothing really wrong with the cabin itself, but there’s just so much noise!

To avoid all of the above, you have to go a few steps further, when booking your cabin, beyond just looking at the generic photos on the cruise line’s website.

Cruise lines publish deck plans that are easily available on their websites, with a little searching. Pull up this deck plan and find the cabin you’re expecting to book. Is it close to any public areas? There’s going to be noise. The deck plan will also clue you in to whether or not there will be an obstructed view.

Avid cruisers are a helpful bunch, though, and many go a step further to assist their fellow travelers; many upload photos of their exact cabins to forums and similar sites, so you can see real photos from real people (not the cruise line’s marketing folks) and know what to expect. There are even entire websites dedicated to providing these types of photos.

Allure of the Seas Cabin
Allure of the Seas Cabin

If there are larger issues, like leaks or flooding, though, the ship will either fix the problem quickly, or they’ll move you to a different cabin. If that’s not possible due to a full ship, you may receive some sort of compensation.

That’s what happened to one couple who boarded an Allure of the Seas cruise in 2023 and found their cabin stripped of its carpet and bedding, with furnishings in disarray and a gross smell.

The cabin had been flooded previously, but no one had updated the couple’s booking, to put them in a new cabin. It took multiple hours to sort out the issue and move the couple to a new cabin, and Royal Caribbean gave the couple $300 in onboard credit.

Eaten Too Much

It happens. There’s all that free cruise food, all the drinks, a buffet! It’s hard to know when to stop. However, it’s about three days into your cruise and now you’re feeling a little bit like you don’t really want to move. And trying to squeeze into your swimsuit? Forget about it.

English Breakfast, Common Things to Eat on a Cruise Ship

Don’t let a little overindulgence ruin the rest of your cruise, though. Ease up at the buffet and head to the ship’s fitness center, or take advantage of the onboard walking track, on one of the upper decks. You’ll get to enjoy the views and sunshine, and get in some much-needed steps, which will relieve some of that bloat and discomfort.

Then, when it’s time to go into port, try to get in some extra steps there as well. Opt for a walking tour, for example, rather than just lying on the beach all day.

Getting Lost

There are two places where this can be an issue: both on the ship itself and when you’re ashore. And if you think there’s no way you could get lost on a cruise ship, think again. Icon of the Seas is practically a floating city, with eight neighborhoods, 40-plus bars and restaurants, seven pools, six waterslides, 22 elevators and nearly 3,000 cabins. It’s easy to get lost.

So, to prepare for the possibility, familiarize yourself with the ship’s online deck plans ahead of time. Get a feel for where your cabin will be located, and what will be around you. While it can be frustrating getting lost on a cruise ship, do keep in mind that, while big, the ship is only so big. Walk far enough and you’ll just reach the other side. You can’t go on indefinitely.

Best Restaurants in Cozumel

Not even sure which direction you’re walking? Remember the odd-even cabin numbers rule. Even-numbered cabins are always on the port side of the ship, and odd-numbered cabins are always on the starboard side of the ship. Port is left and starboard is right, when looking toward the ship’s bow.

Of course, you can also always check one of the deck plan maps that are scattered throughout the ship (look for them near the elevators) or just ask a crew member for help!

Getting lost ashore is a bit trickier. In general, stay in the port area and don’t wander off away from where the majority of your fellow cruisers will be congregating. That doesn’t mean you have to sign up for a group tour or purchase one of the cruise line’s excursions in order to be safe, but it does mean that you should be aware of your surroundings, and you should stay in the tourist areas.

If you can, get a feel for the port destination before you arrive. Look at a map and, if you won’t have international cell service during your trip, download a map to your phone before your trip.

Onboard Reservations are Sold Out

Cruise ships take reservations for their specialty restaurants and shows, often both during the cruise and ahead of time, via the cruise line’s app or website. So, what do you do if you’re either planning your cruise activities ahead of time, or you’ve made it onto the ship, and you realize that a lot of the things you wanted to do, are actually booked up?

While we do recommend reserving your space for any specialty activities or experiences ahead of time, if you do run into onboard reservations being sold out, it might not be quite as hopeless as you think.

Cruise Reservations
Cruise Reservations (Photo Credit: MacroEcon)

It’s important to keep in mind that (a) a lot of the reservations are never used, freeing up space for other cruisers (b) extra reservations are often released on cruise lines’ apps over time, leading up to the cruise, (c) cruise lines only allow a certain number of pre-bookings, so reservations are likely still available and (d) most shows have a standby line, where you can show up and claim any unused, extra seats.

So, the point? Don’t lose hope and keep checking for available reservations, and try your luck at getting into the shows and restaurants you want to see, once you’re onboard.

Bad Weather While in Port

Research your ports’ predicted weather ahead of your arrival and pack your clothes accordingly — and even if the weather forecast only shows sunny skies, still pack poor weather-appropriate clothes, just in case. You don’t want to be stuck on the ship, just because you forgot to bring a rain jacket and umbrella (and you definitely don’t want to buy overpriced rain gear from one of the ship’s shops).

Rain During Port Visit

If the bad weather absolutely means you can’t go out during one of your port days, make the most of it and explore all the ship’s great indoor fun. Cruise ships constantly have something going on, so there’s no excuse to be bored.

Itinerary Changes

Occasionally, a cruise line will change the itinerary. This might happen for a number of reasons, including weather, maintenance issues, and simple bad timing. You can attempt to avoid this issue by not booking a cruise during hurricane season, but, at the end of the day, the decision is out of your hands. If the cruise line wants to make a change, they will.

The best thing to do is simply make the most of the experience and, chances are likely that the cruise ship will only adjust the itinerary slightly — so you’ll still get to see some new destinations in the region.

Keeping that in mind, as you prepare for your trip, think about the other ports in the region that you might visit if an itinerary change did occur, and then research those ports accordingly.

Delayed Arrival to Homeport

The very last thing that could go wrong during your cruise? At the very last moment, your ship could be delayed, leading to a delayed arrival at your homeport.

For this reason, just like we suggested you plan to stay the night in your homeport before the cruise starts, we’re also suggesting you plan to stay the night in your homeport after the cruise ends. That will give you a little buffer time, so you don’t miss your flights home.

Even if the cruise arrives back at the homeport on schedule, still keep in mind that it can take hours for everyone on the cruise ship to make it through immigration. If you have only a small window of time between the cruise ship arriving back home, and your flight, you could very likely miss your flight.

P&O Cruises Guest Denied Boarding Over Wheelchair Declaration

A 69-year-old male passenger booked aboard P&O Cruises’ Ventura was denied boarding because of his electric wheelchair, which had not been previously declared under the cruise line’s special needs and accessibility policies.

Ultimately, the disabled guest was told he could board the ship but only without his wheelchair, an option that was not possible for his mobility.

The guest, Mike Ashton, was to have sailed on Ventura’s May 4 departure with his wife, daughter, and mother-in-law. When the family arrived at the Southampton cruise terminal for their 7-night cruise, however, he was informed that he’d not be able to board unless he left his motorized wheelchair behind.

P&O Cruises’ policy is that scooters need to be declared in advance in case of emergency to ensure there are sufficient personnel to assist travelers with limited mobility.

Ashton was booked in a wheelchair accessible room and claims he never received emails alerting him to fill out the onboard needs questionnaire. The form is available through the cruise line’s online portal and declarations must be made in advance, not on the day of sailing.

To avoid losing out on the entire cost of the family’s cruise fare, Ashton’s family members departed without him after tearful goodbyes at the cruise terminal.

“I said goodbye to my crying daughter. I felt humiliated and embarrassed. I felt guilty. They made me feel more disabled and I felt discriminated against. I felt hopeless and very lonely,” said Ashton.

Ashton was able to drive home, and was in touch with his family onboard the cruise ship during their holiday – which also celebrated his daughter’s birthday.

“We are so sorry this happened to Mr. Ashton and he was not able to board,” a spokesperson from P&O Cruises said. “The on board needs questionnaire is on My P&O Cruises (our online portal) to be completed – it is not sent out by email. It is also very clear on the front page of My P&O Cruises that this is to be completed if needed.”

The Mobility Aids and Equipment page of P&O Cruises’ website does clearly state the policy about declaring mobility scooters in advance.

“If you do not advise us in advance of your holiday that you will be bringing a mobility scooter, you won’t be able to bring your mobility scooter on board. There are no storage facilities available for devices that are denied boarding, so this could also result in a you being denied boarding,” the policy reads.

In fact, the policy is restated several times on the same page, including very directly: “If you do not advise us in advance of your holiday that you will be bringing a mobility scooter, you won’t be able to bring your mobility scooter on board.”

The declaration policy applies to both mobility scooters as well as standard wheelchairs. The reasoning for the declaration is not only to ensure adequate staff in case of an emergency, but also to be sure a scooter has the proper dimensions to fit inside the stateroom.

Cruise Lines Paying More Attention to Mobility Equipment

This incident comes as more cruise lines are seeing issues with mobility scooters and taking steps to ensure everyone’s safety and accessibility onboard.

Carnival Cruise Line, for example, has recently clarified its scooter size policies and been very forthright that larger scooters will not be permitted onboard. Scooters, wheelchairs, and similar equipment may also not be stored in public areas or corridors when not in use. Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises are owned by the same parent company, Carnival Corporation & plc.

Any guests who require mobility equipment of any kind for their cruise travels should carefully study their cruise line’s policies to be sure they are in compliance with what size and style of equipment is permitted, and how it can be used onboard.

Tampa Cruise Port, also known as the Port of Tampa Bay, is strategically located along the city’s trendy and vibrant Channelside Drive. This location not only means that the port is in a part of the city that is bustling with activity and offers plenty of things for passengers to do, but it also means that it is highly accessible from all parts of the city.

If you’re mapping out your travels, the port can be found at the following address: Tampa Cruise Port Address: 651 Channelside Drive, Tampa, Florida 33602

Number of Tampa Cruise Terminals and Piers

The Port of Tampa Bay is home to three modern cruise terminals, each designed to offer passengers a comfortable and well-organized boarding experience. Although only three of the terminals are dedicated to servicing cruise ships, they are not named in order:

Terminal 2

Primarily used by Carnival Cruise Line, it is a departure point for ships headed to sunny destinations throughout the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is located directly at the southern end of the port complex at 651 Channelside Drive.

Terminal 3

Mostly used by Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, it has long berths, making it a more suitable docking option for larger ships. The terminal is located at 815 Channelside Drive, towards the north end of the port, which makes it much easier to get to from the main port parking lot.

Terminal 6

Located a little closer to downtown at 1333 McKay Street, this cruise terminal was initially reserved as a homeport for Holland America Cruise Line, but now it is used mainly for spillover for any cruise line looking to dock during the busy season.

All three terminals are along the same strip of water near the city’s Channel District. Ships dock along the Ybor Turning Basin, making it easy for passengers to reach any of the three cruise terminals from downtown and beyond.

Cruise Lines and Berthing Allocations

As mentioned, Terminal 2 primarily hosts Carnival ships, while Terminal 3 serves as the main docking point for Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

Terminal 6 is now more versatile, hosting multiple different cruise lines throughout the year, including Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Margaritaville at Sea.

Tampa Cruise Port Terminal Facilities and Services

Every cruise terminal offers free public Wi-Fi in all the waiting and seating areas. There are also ample seating areas to ensure that all passengers can relax before their cruise departure after clearing security.

Each terminal is also outfitted with well-maintained restroom facilities and baby changing stations in both the men’s and women’s bathrooms. If you need assistance with your luggage, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 have luggage porters and temporary luggage storage areas on the first floors of both buildings.

The three terminal buildings were all designed to be ADA-compliant, meaning they are wheelchair accessible and offer wheelchair-friendly bathroom stalls. If you need to use a wheelchair or need mobility assistance prior to boarding, contact your cruise line ahead of time to see what arrangements they can make for you.

Port of Tampa Bay Cruise Passenger Parking

The Port of Tampa Bay’s cruise facilities were designed with the understanding that many guests would be driving into the city from elsewhere, so they would need ample overnight parking. With this knowledge, the port offers a massive parking lot, and there are other nearby options for when the port is at its busiest during peak cruise season in the winter.

Port Parking

The main parking lot is located directly across from Terminal 6 but within walking distance of the other two cruise terminals. Overnight rates cost $15 per day, with a one-time valet fee of $20 on top of the daily rate.

Given that it is patrolled 24 hours a day and conveniently close to the terminals, it is definitely the preferred choice. It’s worth booking ahead of time to ensure you get a spot.

Channelside Drive Private Lots

A few nearby private lots also offer budget-friendly parking. With how busy the port can get, these private lots are a good option when the main lot is at capacity. Remember that these lots are not necessarily patrolled overnight, so paying extra for Port Parking can be worthwhile if it is available.

Transportation to and from the Port of Tampa Bay

The Port of Tampa Bay is easy to reach due to its convenient location just outside the city’s downtown core.

If you are flying into Tampa, Tampa International Airport is just 7.5 miles away. If you are driving yourself, these directions will get you there in 10 to 20 minutes:

Follow Interstate 275 to I-4 East. Take Exit 1 to 21st Street, then. Turn onto Adamo Drive. Follow signs for the Port of Tampa Bay Cruise Terminals, which will feature a silhouette of a cruise ship. Take the turn onto Channelside Drive, then continue until you see the main entrance to the port.

The parking lot is well-marked, and so is the drop-off point. Remember that traffic can be an issue, so you’ll want to give yourself extra time if you arrive the same day your ship departs.

Tampa Cruise Port Transportation Options

Given that Tampa is a major commuter city, there is no shortage of transportation options available to visitors. Plenty of taxis operate in the city, and most offer a flat rate of roughly $30 to get you to the cruise terminals from the airport or any of the major hotels in and around the downtown area.

The city also has a very active rideshare presence, with both Uber and Lyft services widely available. For those looking to save money, rideshare vehicles can be a little bit more affordable than a taxi, but you need to avoid rush hour, as surge rates can easily tip the scales.

Some main cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle services between the airport and the port. Check with your cruise line beforehand to ensure this is the case, and book your spot on one of the shuttles.

Public Transportation

To cut costs, you can take the TECO Line Streetcar, which runs from downtown to Channelside Drive. Not only does this electric streetcar come every 15 minutes, but it is also completely free, even for visitors from outside of the city!

What Is the Best Time to Visit Tampa?

One of the main reasons why Tampa is such a popular tourist destination is its unique blend of tropical weather and the modern amenities you would get with any major American city.

That said, there are fairly distinct seasonal variations, which can impact when you want to visit and how busy the cruise port will be. The best time to visit will depend on your preferences and budget, but here’s a basic breakdown of what you can expect:

Summer (June to September)

The summer months tend to be humid with fairly significant rainfall. Tampa is exposed to fairly heavy tropical storms, so even though the warmer temperatures may seem pleasant, you might need to plan indoor activities and pack rain gear.

Typically, highs around 90°F are expected, plus heavy humidity. Despite the hot temperatures and occasional showers, summer is lively in Tampa.

Fall (October to November)

With more pleasant temperatures in the 75° to 85°F range, fall is a great time to visit. Rainfall also tends to subside, and the city remains lively, with events like the Clearwater Jazz Holiday and International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival drawing tourists.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is the peak season for tourism and activity around the cruise port. With temperatures ranging from 50° to 75°F, low humidity, and limited precipitation, it’s a great time to visit the city and surrounding outdoor activities, like Busch Gardens.

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures increase from 60° to 80°F, while precipitation remains relatively limited. In April, the city also is at its most beautiful. With tropical flowers blooming and plenty of sunshine, it can be a welcome escape from the colder climates throughout the country.

Spring is also the time when the Tampa Bay Blues and Gasparilla Festivals are hosted, making the city an exciting time to visit.

Nearby Amenities and Attractions

The following can be found within walking distance of the port, making it easy to kill time if you plan to arrive early:

Tampa Riverwalk and Attractions

This scenic 2.4-mile walking trail is a hub of activity throughout the year. With a nice mix of restaurants, public parks, bars, murals, stores, historical monuments, and even the Florida Aquarium – the Riverwalk’s most popular attraction, you don’t want to miss out.

You’ll also find the Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children’s Museum along the walk. With the Tampa Riverwalk and its numerous attractions only 1.2 miles away, you can walk there from the port in less than 30 minutes by following East Cumberland Avenue.

If you plan on visiting numerous attractions along the way, we recommend picking up a Tampa Riverwalk Pass, which provides entry to seven unique attractions for one reasonable price.

Ybor City

Just 2.8 miles away, this historic district of Tampa offers visitors an opportunity to see the city’s more culturally enriching side. With numerous bars and restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, it’s a popular destination for younger travelers.

The area has a distinct Columbian and Cuban influence, with numerous restaurants and bistros showcasing the tastes and smells of these two Latin nations. It’s also a great place to purchase cigars for your cruise or even watch master cigar makers roll them by hand. You’ll also find the Tampa Baseball Museum in this exciting neighborhood and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

To add to the unique atmosphere, chickens can roam free, making you feel like you’ve been transported to a Caribbean village. You can also get to and from Ybor City by taking the free TECO Line Streetcar System!

If you have more time before or after your cruise, you can also visit some of Tampa’s most popular attractions:

Busch Gardens

Approximately 10 miles from the Port of Tampa, this exciting amusement park offers guests the opportunity to ride thrilling roller coasters, view exciting wildlife, and watch live entertainers. There’s no wonder it’s one of the city’s most iconic attractions.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park

This massive 63-acre zoo is one of the largest and most interesting wildlife preserves in the entire state. Although it’s about 6 miles from the cruise port, the drive is relatively simple and short. You can be at the zoo parking lot in roughly 25 minutes by following North Nebraska Avenue.

Florida Aquarium

We already mentioned the Florida Aquarium, but it’s worth noting this must-see attraction again. Rated among the best aquariums in the country, it is an interesting and educational option for the whole family.

Given that it’s just a four-minute walk from Terminal 3 and right next to Terminal 2, you really can’t miss it. Plus, right outside the aquarium, you can see the American Victory Ship & Museum, a fully restored warship from the Second World War. The ship floats in the harbor and acts as an interactive maritime museum!

Dining and Shopping in Tampa

If you are looking for dining and shopping options near the port, you’re in luck. There are plenty of options within a short walk or reasonable taxi ride of the port terminals.

Channelside Bay Plaza is a multi-purpose entertainment complex located directly on Channelside Drive near the port. With various dining and shopping options, it is perfect for pre- or post-cruise entertainment.

If you are looking for more options, it is worth traveling to Downtown Tampa. The city’s core has plenty of gourmet restaurants and trendy boutiques, which are easy to discover while exploring.

Consider taxiing to Tampa’s International Plaza and Bay Street for more high-end shopping. The mall is home to all the usual designer brands you would find in any high-end mall, so there is something for everyone. It’s also a good option if you forgot something for your trip or want to buy a few last-minute outfits, as there are plenty of clothing stores throughout the mall.

If you want an authentic taste of Tampa, go to Ybor City. Do yourself a favor and get an authentic Cuban sandwich. They’re filling and delicious. Carmine’s Restaurant and Bar is one of the top choices in Ybor City, but Abella’s Cuban Restaurant is just as good!

You’ll also find plenty of restaurants near the cruise port that are serving other Tampa classics, such as deviled crabs, grouper sandwiches, and empanadas.

For a modern take on classic American cuisine, try Naked Farmer, just a short walk from the cruise port on Water Street.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How far is it from Tampa Airport to the cruise terminal?

The Tampa International Airport is 7.5 miles from the closest cruise terminal, but traffic can make the relatively short journey take longer than expected. If you travel during the city’s rush hours, between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, you will want to give yourself more time.

How much is a taxi from Tampa airport to the cruise port?

While meter rates can differ, most taxis will offer a flat rate of $30 to get from Tampa International Airport to the Tampa Bay Cruise Port. Just ask your driver to make sure before you get into the cab, as most will offer this flat rate if asked. You may be charged the more expensive and unpredictable meter rate if you don’t ask.

Does Tampa Airport have a cruise shuttle?

The airport does not operate its own cruise terminal shuttle, but many major cruise lines do. Whether or not you can take a shuttle will depend on which cruise line you are traveling with, so make sure you check ahead of time.

If you would rather travel by shuttle bus, you can book through Tampa Bay Airport Shuttle Service, but this is a paid service rather than a complimentary shuttle.

Royal Caribbean to Resume Cruises From Baltimore After Bridge Collapse

Port of Baltimore announced on May 15, 2024, that Royal Caribbean cruises from the port will resume. Vision of the Seas will set sail on May 25 for a five-night cruise to Bermuda.

The 78,340 gross ton Vision-class cruise ship will be the first cruise ship to sail from Baltimore since the same vessel sailed on a 12-day cruise on March 21, 2024. The port has been closed for cruise ships since a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Port of Baltimore said the following on its Facebook page: “Get ready…the Port of Baltimore is ready to cruise once again! Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas will depart on May 25th for a fantastic 5-night voyage from Baltimore to Bermuda! This marks the first cruise departing Baltimore since the Key Bridge incident.”

The Key Bridge accident happened on March 26, 2024, when the container ship Dali experienced a blackout while sailing out of Baltimore Harbor. This resulted in the ship’s systems going offline and the ship colliding with a pier supporting the bridge, causing its collapse.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, federal agencies, and state and local workers have been working extremely hard to restore operations as soon as possible. Although some temporary channels with limited depth have been created, which provided some access to smaller vessels, these were unsuitable for cruise ships due to their deeper draft.

The first cruise, departing on May 25, will be a five-night Bermuda cruise on Vision of the Seas, which includes a two-day stop at Kings Wharf, Bermuda, before returning to Baltimore on May 30.

Vision of the Seas will then alternate 5-night sailings to Bermuda with 9-night cruises to Bermuda and the Bahamas. The longer 9-night voyages will also include stops in Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay

Since the accident, both Vision of the Seas and Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit have operated their cruises from the Port of Norfolk, Virginia, a distance of 240 miles (or 386 kilometers) from Baltimore.

Carnival Also Resumes Cruises from Baltimore

Royal Caribbean International is not alone in the resumption of cruises from Baltimore. On May 9, Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that the cruise sailing from Norfolk, Virginia, onboard the 88,500-gross-ton Carnival Pride would conclude in Baltimore. The ship will visit Nassau, Princess Cays, and Freeport, Bahamas.

To accommodate guests who are in the awkward situation of starting and ending their cruise in different locations, Carnival is assisting with transportation and a $100 onboard credit.

On May 26, Carnival Pride will embark on a 14-night Greenland cruise. The Carnival Journey includes stops at Nanortalik and Qaqortoq in Greenland on June 1 and June 2. Following the calls to Greenland, the ship will stop in St. Anthony and Corner Brook, Newfoundland, and Sydney, Nova Scotia, before returning to Baltimore on June 9.

The return of Vision of the Seas and Carnival Pride is a big moment for Baltimore and the surrounding area. The two cruise ships are the only ones homeported in Baltimore, making their return important for the local economy and those people in Baltimore who depend on cruise ships to make a living. No other ships have scheduled calls from Baltimore in 2024 or 2025.
