Legendary Ocean Liner Set to Make a Huge Comeback

The SS United States – nicknamed “America’s Flagship” for her record-breaking history and innovation – may be returned to New York and repurposed as a mixed-use destination, including event venues, a museum, green space, a hotel, and more.

The project is under consideration after the retired ship’s landlord in Philadelphia doubled her berth rent during the pandemic, a move that is now slated for trial.

SS United States May Be on the Move Again

The SS United States, once a global ambassador of the nation with her iconic red, white, and blue funnels, has been berthed in Philadelphia since 1996 and is now under the ownership of the SS United States Conservancy.

Various plans have been explored and modified over the years to restore or renovate the ship for different purposes, from office space and hotels to event centers, casinos, and more.

No such plans have continued much past the initial stages owing to the tremendous operational costs of the vessel and the need for extensive restoration.

In 2021, however, the matter came to a head when the rent for the ship’s berth space at Pier 82 was raised from $850 per month to $1,700 per month, contributing to a dispute over back rent that may require the ship to move.

Two New York firms have now joined the privately-funded project to move and redevelop the ship. Investment firm RXR and management company MCR Hotels have both helped develop ideas to repurpose the ship as a unique, mixed-use facility that would include several acres of public green space, a substantial hotel, food and beverage operations, and a museum dedicated to the ship’s storied history.

“The SS United States symbolizes the nation’s ambition and innovation. Our development partners have embraced the patriotic and economic significance of this monumental project,” said Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy and granddaughter of the ship’s original designer, naval architect William Francis Gibbs.

“Through their extensive due diligence, they have created a bold and exciting plan that preserves the ship’s history and activates the vessel’s commercial potential.”

SS United States Venues
SS United States Venues

Most notable during SS United States‘ service record – she sailed from 1952 through 1969 – the vessel broke the speed record for a passenger-carrying transatlantic crossing using just two-thirds of her power, a record the ship still holds today. SS United States routinely made the crossing at 30 knots, and only lost her edge for such travel with the expansion of jet liners.

Where Will the Ship Go?

Exactly where the SS United States might move is still up for speculation. While the Hudson River in Manhattan has been identified as the optimal choice because of the ship’s history sailing from that location as well as tourism and use potential, other cities may also prove viable choices.

Since her retirement, the ship has been berthed in Norfolk, Virginia and spent time in Turkey and Ukraine at various points when her future was uncertain and she changed hands to different developers in the hopes of different purposes, none of which materialized.

In 1996, the ship was towed back across the Atlantic and berthed in Philadelphia, where she has remained until this latest uncertainty.

In 2003, Norwegian Cruise Line purchased the vessel with plans to renovate the ship for service in Hawaii, which did not materialize and the ship was sold again in 2011 – this time to the SS United States Conservancy.

The new proposal for multi-use development is a promising one that could bring the remarkable vessel back into the public eye and restore the glory she has earned.

Holland America Adds Venue Created by Famous Japanese Chef

Another celebrity chef is poised to bring his cuisine creations to the high seas, this time aboard Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam. Japanese Chef Masaharu Morimoto will soon open a permanent dining venue on the ship, featuring Asian-inspired dishes and fresh fish.

Nieuw Amsterdam to Feature Morimoto By Sea

Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam will soon become the first in the fleet to present a new dining venue created by Japanese Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the star of “Iron Chef” and “Iron Chef America.” The venue, Morimoto By Sea, will be a permanent dining space offering exclusive dinners onboard the 2,500-guest ship.

In September 2023 Holland America Line had announced the Morimoto By Sea pop-up restaurant that is offered once per cruise onboard other ships in either the Pinnacle Grill or the Tamarind restaurant.

The new permanent Morimoto By Sea will debut on Nieuw Amsterdam’s December 16, 2023 sailing, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise with port calls at St. Thomas, Turks & Caicos, and Half Moon Cay, the cruise line’s private island destination in the Bahamas.

Chef Morimoto was named Holland America Line’s Fresh Fish Ambassador in September, and in that capacity was tapped to oversee the cruise line’s new Global Fresh Fish initiative, a program that enables the line to source fresh fish from 60 ports worldwide.

Signature Restaurant Elevates Ship’s Dining Options

Aboard Nieuw Amsterdam, the new eatery will be situated next to the Tamarind restaurant on Deck 11, which offers the cuisine of Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. Morimoto By Sea will serve a multi-course, Asian-inspired dinner menu specializing in seafood, and with other choices such as beef, chicken, and vegetarian options. Vegan dishes also will be available as will a full sushi menu.

“Featuring cuisine from an esteemed culinary authority like Chef Morimoto in his signature restaurant elevates our specialty dining experience for guests on Nieuw Amsterdam,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and guest services at Holland America Line.

“The menu showcases a symphony of flavors and the freshest ingredients, reflecting the highest standards of culinary excellence from both Holland America Line and Chef Morimoto. We’re thrilled to welcome guests there nightly on Nieuw Amsterdam.”

Reservations for Morimoto By Sea can be made in advance of sailing using Holland America Line’s Navigator App or may be made on board the ship. There will be a cover charge of $55 (USD) per person, plus an 18% gratuity fee.

“The creation of this new restaurant has been a new and exciting experience, and I look forward to sharing my culinary passion with guests aboard Nieuw Amsterdam,” said Chef Morimoto. “Morimoto By Sea will bring exceptional flavors and one-of-a-kind dishes to guests sailing around the world with Holland America Line.”

While Morimoto By Sea is the chef’s first ocean-going eatery, he currently owns restaurants in New York, Philadelphia, Mumbai, Mexico City, and Tokyo, among other distinctive locations.

Nieuw Amsterdam is the only ship to feature the permanent Morimoto restaurant, and the cruise line has not indicated whether the venue might be added to other ships in the future.

Morimoto Menu Will Delight Seafood, Sushi Lovers

The exclusive menu at Morimoto By Sea is sure to excite any fish aficionados, lovers of Asian food, or just foodies interested in new and unique dishes.

To start a meal, appetizers will include a Sushi Plate that can be traditional or may be vegetarian upon request; Morimoto Fresh Tuna Pizza with anchovy aioli and Kalamata olives; Pork Gyoza Dumpling with a scallion ginger sauce; and other tasty bites including ramen, sashimi tacos, and sticky ribs.

Main course choices offer Crispy Fried Whole Market Fresh Fish with sweet and spicy chili sauce and pickled vegetables; Angry Lobster Pad Thai with Maine lobster, rice noodles, and Thai red curry sauce; Broiled Beef Tenderloin steak served with Japanese-style mushroom sauce; and Chicken Teriyaki, among other items.

Guests with a sweet tooth will want to try some of Chef Morimoto’s desserts, such as Dark Chocolate Sphere, with ganache, marshmallow, and hot chocolate sauce; and Baked Tofu Cheesecake, served with mango and pineapple salsa.

It will offer guests a captivating world of magic blended with the art of mixology and features magicians, surprises in themed rooms, and theatrical cocktails delivered by sleight-of-hand servers.

Ship to Debut in Barcelona in February 2024

The 175,000-gross ton Sun Princess is under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, and is scheduled to sail her maiden voyage on February 8, 2024, from Barcelona to Rome. Port calls on the inaugural sailing include Mallorca, Spain; Messina, Sicily; Athens and Santorini, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Naples, Italy.

The ship will remain in the Mediterranean through the summer season, sailing 7- to 23-night itineraries from multiple departure ports, including Barcelona, Rome, Athens, and Southampton.

In September 2024, the ship will reposition to Fort Lauderdale for a series of winter sailings in the Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Third Prima-Class Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line has released a teaser video about the third ship in the innovative Prima class of vessels with a confirmed name of the new vessel – Norwegian Aqua. With outstanding innovations of her own, the new ship is sure to make waves when she debuts in 2025.

Name of Third Prima Class Ship Revealed

Norwegian Cruise Line’s third Prima-class ship will be named Norwegian Aqua, and she is sure to make a splash. Sister ship to the already immensely popular Norwegian Prima (2022) and Norwegian Viva (2023), the third-in-class vessel has further updates and innovations that will truly set her apart.

The ship promises “more of what you love” aboard, “taking our Prima class to a whole new level.” This will include expanded outdoor spaces for stunning, panoramic views and a greater variety of staterooms, undoubtedly with additional solo cabins that Norwegian Cruise Line is adding across the fleet, plus much more.

“Norwegian Aqua is a true testament of fusing together what represents the future of our Brand as the first ship in the Prima Plus Class, and our commitment to pushing the boundaries in guest-first experiences that will make new waves at sea,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Named for both the beautiful shades of blue from the ocean and our connection to the sea, Norwegian Aqua will feature new, elevated and exhilarating offerings that once again showcase NCL as the innovator in the industry and as a key contributor to a new era of cruising.”

Outstanding Hull Art

Immediately noticeable is Norwegian Aqua‘s vibrant, multi-colored hull art. Unlike her sister ships with their ocean-hued colorations, Norwegian Aqua will have an intense paint scheme with yellow, blue, teal, orange, pink, and purple shades, ensuring the ship is instantly recognizable from every angle.

The hull artist is Allison Hueman, the first-ever female artist to design a ship hull for the cruise line. Her distinctive street-art style blends modern mythology and figurative representations of sea and sky with ancient goddesses in a piece entitled “Where the Sky Meets the Sea” exclusively for Norwegian Aqua.

“I’m honored, not only to be the first major female hull artist for Norwegian Cruise Line, but to also know that my artwork will be roaming the seas touching different parts of the world,” said Hueman. “It’s incredibly special for me to partner with a brand that believes in the magical connection between art and exploration.”

Cruise Line’s First-Ever Aqua Slidecoaster

One of the most exciting features of the upcoming ship is sure to be Norwegian Cruise Line’s first-ever “Aqua Slidecoaster” which is seen on the top decks of the vessel. Described as the “world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide” the Aqua Slidecoaster has two distinct dueling tracks to experience, and is a two-person ride propelled by a magnetic lift.

Aqua Slidecoaster
Aqua Slidecoaster (Image Credit: Norwegian Cruise Line)

The Aqua Slidecoaster will span three decks and each track is different as they wrap around the ship’s funnel.

While full details of the Aqua Slidecoaster are not yet revealed, what is obvious is that Norwegian Aqua will not have a multi-story speedway go-kart track like her sister ships, as the slidecoaster is positioned in the same area of the ship with no room for both attractions.

More Onboard Experiences

In addition to the very visible Aqua Slidecoaster, Norwegian Aqua will also feature the Glow Court, an epic sport game experience with an LED sports floor. Sideline spaces and a lounge will give spectators just as much of an immersive experience as players, bringing everyone to the center of the action.

At night, the Glow Court will transform into a nightclub, utilizing the energetic space in a new fashion for even more guests to enjoy.

Also onboard the new ship will be one of the favorites of the Prima class – the 10-story spiraling dry slide, The Drop. Unlike Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, however, Norwegian Aqua will only feature one dry slide instead of a dueling pair.

For more relaxation, guests will be able to have an aqua-tastic soak in one of two infinity hot tubs or the ship’s infinity edge pool, each one providing spectacular views. The ever-popular adults-only Vibe Beach Club will also be available on the new ship.

Guests will also be able to stroll around the cruise line’s largest-ever Ocean Boulevard, wrapping around the ship and linking outdoor dining spaces and seating areas while featuring outstanding views. The glass-floored Oceanwalk bridge is a highlight of the Boulevard and always a remarkable spot for a pause.

New, Bigger Than Ever Staterooms

In another fleet-first, Norwegian Aqua will also debut the cruise line’s Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites in the exclusive ship-within-a-ship, The Haven. Each of the four two-story spacious suites will include separate living and dining areas, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, and even more luxurious appointments.

Within The Haven, guests will enjoy unparalleled luxury with exclusive 24-hour butler service, an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room, an aft-facing infinity pool, dedicated sundeck, and more.

Itineraries Revealed and Open for Booking

Norwegian Aqua is now available to book, and the ship will first set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida in April 2025 on 7-night sailings that will visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, two destinations in the Virgin Islands, and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas.

Following her short series from Port Canaveral, Norwegian Aqua will offer 5- and 7-night cruises to Bermuda from New York City from August through October 2025, after which the ship will reposition to Miami for 5- and 7-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries at least through April 2026.

Carnival Cruise Ship Delayed for Clean-Up After Soot Discharge

Carnival Cruise Line crews are in clean-up mode after Carnival Magic accidentally discharged soot while preparing to depart the pier in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands. The vessel has been delayed, and the cruise line confirms it’s likely due to a brief power outage.

Carnival Magic Delayed After Soot Discharge

Passengers onboard Carnival Magic were met with an unexpected situation after the cruise ship discharged soot into the water, causing what initially looked like a significant oil leak coming from the Dream-class vessel.

The incident occurred after a brief power outage on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, as the ship was preparing to leave port. The news first broke on social media through Cruise Hive’s dedicated Carnival Cruise Line Group, with photos posted by passenger James Robinson onboard.

“There was a power outage. The power was out for one minute,” Robinson described. It came back on, everything normal. But now there is a giant oil slick on the back of the ship. The officers were on the pier, visibly upset.”

Robinson’s description of the discharge as an “oil slick” was prior to the assessment by the ship’s environmental team that identified the debris as soot.

The Carnival Magic team is working on the clean-up of a soot discharge from the ship’s Exhaust Gas Control Systems (EGCS) that occurred while preparing for departure today from Grand Turk. A momentary power outage likely contributed to the incident,a statement from a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson said.

“The ship’s departure has been delayed while we complete the clean-up, and all appropriate authorities have been informed. We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and will complete the proper clean-up and address any technical issues with the ship’s EGCS equipment. Carnival Magic’s itinerary should not be impacted.”

Carnival Magic was to have departed Grand Turk at 6 p.m. after spending the day in port, but did not leave until shortly after 8:30 p.m. once the cleanup was completed.

Undoubtedly, an investigation will be held to determine exactly how the power failed, what systems were affected, and what, if any, safeguards did not function as intended that resulted in this unfortunate incident.

Both cruise lines and port communities take environmental concerns very seriously, and any necessary changes will certainly be made to prevent such an incident from happening again.

Itinerary Not Impacted

The 128,000-gross-ton Carnival Magic is currently sailing a 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary that departed Miami, Florida on Sunday, October 29. The ship has already called on Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, and Grand Turk was the vessel’s second port of call.

Following Grand Turk, Carnival Magic will spend Thursday, November 2 in Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. Despite the delay in departing Grand Turk, the ship’s scheduled 8 a.m. arrival in Grand Turk is not expected to be impacted, as the two ports of call are just 112 miles (180 kilometers) apart.

The cruise ship’s typical cruising speed is 22.5 knots (26 miles per hour / 42 kilometers per hour), meaning the ship can cover the distance between Grand Turk and Amber Cove in just over four hours. Even with the later than planned departure, the ship still has more than 10 hours to reach the Dominican Republic on time.

Amber Cove is the ship’s last port of call on the current itinerary, and another day at sea will bring the vessel back to Miami on Saturday, November 4.

Royal Caribbean Announces Four-Ship Line-Up for Alaska 2025

Royal Caribbean International has unveiled its plans for the summer of 2025, announcing a four-ship line-up for Alaska cruises.

Anthem of the Seas will make its Alaska debut alongside returning ships Quantum of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, and Serenade of the Seas. The cruises, sailing between May and September 2025, will offer a variety of 7-night vacations starting from Seattle; Vancouver, and Seward.

A New Addition to Alaska

Royal Caribbean announced its plans for the 2025 Alaska cruise season today, November 1, which will bring three familiar cruise ships to Alaska, and one new addition. Quantum of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Radiance of the Seas are all regular visitors to Alaska. In 2025, Anthem of the Seas will make her debut in the Northern Frontier.

The 168,666 gross tons, Quantum-class cruise ship Anthem of the Seas will be sailing roundtrip from Seattle, offering two different 7-night itineraries. Cruises onboard Anthem of the Seas will include visits to Sitka, Skagway, Endicott Arm fjord, Dawes Glacier, Juneau, and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Like her sister Quantum of the Seas, guests can enjoy everything that Alaska has to offer in a unique way, enjoying onboard amenities such as RipCord, the skydiving simulator, and the North Star glass observation capsule, which reaches 300 feet above the ocean.

Anthem of the Seas will be taking the long way around on her way to Alaska. After she completes her New York cruises to the Caribbean in 2024, she will reposition to Europe for a series of cruises around Northern Europe, Spain, and Portugal, sailing from Southampton.

She will then transit to Dubai, starting October 2024, sailing on to Singapore, from where she will offer guests several months of cruises around South East Asia. Starting May 9, 2025, she will already have arrived in Seattle for the first of her Alaska cruises, following a month-long repositioning period.

Return to Alaska for Three Cruise Ships

Three ships will be making their return to Alaska, including the 168,666, 2014-built Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas will also offer guests 7-night roundtrip cruises from Seattle, Washington. Itineraries include visits to Sitka, Skagway, Endicott Arm fjord, Dawes Glacier, and Juneau in Alaska, and Icy Strait Point and Victoria in Canada.

Serenade of the Seas also returns to Alaska, sailing from Vancouver after a unique 16-night Panama Canal cruise, with the first cruise setting sail on May 4, 2025.

During the 16-night repositioning, which sails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Serenade of the Seas will call on George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Colón, Panama; the Panama Canal; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The first cruise in Alaska takes guests along the Inside Passage to explore destinations like Sitka, Tracy Arm Fjord, Haines, and Ketchikan, Alaska.

Last but not least, Radiance of the Seas offers alternating northbound and southbound cruises from Seward and Vancouver, with destinations including Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, and Hubbard Glacier. The first cruise in Alaska for the Radiance-class cruise ship sets sail on May 9, 2025.

Before or after the 7-night cruises, guests can extend their adventure with a Royal Caribbean Cruisetour to Denali National Park.

While Royal Caribbean International has scheduled several visits to Sitka in 2025, it remains to be seen if those visits will happen, after locals raised another petition to severely limit the number of ships and passengers that can visit the popular Alaskan port.

Royal Caribbean Ship Changes Only Port of Call on Cruise

Guests aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas will not be visiting the only port of call scheduled for their cruise vacation.

Due to a poor weather forecast, the ship will be unable to visit CocoCay as planned, and instead is heading for Freeport as an alternative destination in the Bahamas.

Anthem of the Seas Itinerary Change

Because of poor weather at CocoCay, Anthem of the Seas will not be able to visit the private island destination on her very first sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, her new winter homeport.

The Quantum-class ship departed New Jersey on Monday, October 30, 2023, for a 6-night Bahamas sailing. The only port of call on the itinerary was to have been Perfect Day at CocoCay, but now satellite tracking data as well as passengers onboard report the ship headed for Freeport, instead.

The first two days of the sailing are days at sea while Anthem of the Seas makes her way to the Bahamas, 1,000 miles (1,610 kilometers) away. Thursday, November 2 was to have been the visit to CocoCay, followed by two more days at sea as the ship returned to her new seasonal homeport.

Instead, however, the ship is aimed at Freeport – 70 miles (113 km) northwest of CocoCay. Anthem of the Seas is showing an estimated arrival time of 10:30 a.m. on November 2, though rough weather along the way may influence the final arrival time.

Anthem of the Seas Cruise Ship

It should be noted that the 168,666-gross-ton Anthem of the Seas has also had engine difficulty in recent months that has meant cancelled ports of call and adjusted itineraries as the ship modifies her maximum cruising speed. The change on this sailing, however, does not appear to be due to engine or propulsion issues.

Anthem of the Seas can welcome 4,180 guests at double occupancy, and up to 4,905 travelers when fully booked. The ship will remain homeported from New Jersey until late April 2024, offering 7-night Bahamas itineraries.

On April 28, 2024, the vessel will depart for the last time on a transatlantic cruise to Southampton and the beginning of her next season in Europe, after which she will be deployed to Singapore and will not return to North America at least until Summer 2025.

Poor Weather Forecast for the Bahamas

On Thursday, when Anthem of the Seas will be in the Bahamas, weather forecasts are predicting a mostly cloudy but very windy day, with winds expected from 20-30 miles per hour (32-48 kilometers per hour), and even stronger gusts likely.

While the weather will be similar at both Freeport and CocoCay, the difference is in the docking facilities. At the Freeport cruise terminal, the harbor is somewhat protected and therefore strong winds are blunted and it is safer for guests to get on and off the ship.

Anthem of the Seas Cruise Ship

In contrast, the pier at CocoCay is open and exposed, and while this makes for great photos of the island and easy access for ships, the pier can be subject to very rough waves that make it unsafe to walk across. Similarly, winds pushing on a docked ship cause movement that may make it necessary to close the gangways at times, even if the ship is docked.

These types of itinerary changes are not uncommon, particularly later in the year when the end of hurricane season generates storm systems that, while not full-blown hurricanes, still have high winds and rain that can disrupt cruise ship calls.

Guests setting sail at this time of year should always remain flexible with their travel plans and expectations, ready to enjoy an amazing cruise vacation no matter where they may visit.

Carnival Cruise Line Honoring Veterans With Homeport Tributes

Carnival Cruise Line is hosting a week-long series of tributes to military veterans in six different homeports in early November, leading up to Veterans Day on November 11, 2023. The events will happen on six different Carnival ships and will honor hundreds of veterans in each port community.

Carnival Offering Homeport Veteran Tributes

When six different Carnival cruise ships spend the day in their homeports in early November, each vessel will host a special onboard tribute for local veterans. The events will include recognition of the veterans’ service with a special ceremony, and a delicious luncheon for attendees to enjoy.

“We’re so proud to carry more active and retired military service members than any other cruise line, so we wanted to honor our hometown heroes in some of our port communities for Veterans Day this year,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “These tribute events serve as our thanks for the sacrifices made by local veterans, active military personnel and their families.”

The onboard events will begin aboard Carnival Horizon in Miami and the newly renovated Carnival Paradise in Tampa on Sunday, November 5, and continue throughout the week.

Carnival Breeze will host veterans in Galveston on Monday, November 6; Carnival Miracle will host her tribute event in Long Beach on Tuesday, November 7; and Carnival Valor will welcome veterans aboard in New Orleans on Thursday, November 9.

The final event will be aboard Mardi Gras at the world’s busiest cruise port, Port Canaveral, on Saturday, November 11 – the actual date of Veterans Day.

Special Community Donations

In addition to the special onboard tribute events, Carnival Cruise Line is seeking to make a difference for veterans in these homeport communities by donating a passenger van to each local VA office to help provide transportation to local veterans to reach VA programs and services, including health care.

Carnival Cruise Line has long been a supporter of Operation Homefront, a nationally recognized nonprofit that supports America’s military families with financial assistance for housing, providing holiday meals and holiday toy drives, helping with transitional housing, and much more.

Onboard Carnival cruises, guests can easily donate to Operation Homefront. A portion of the proceeds from special group photos purchased from onboard military appreciation events as well as purchases of the exclusive “Heroes American Pale Ale” brewed aboard ships equipped with breweries are donated to the charity organization.

Onboard Events Across the Fleet

While only six ships will host special events for veterans in the community, every Carnival cruise ship hosts a Military Appreciation Gathering on every sailing, including during the week of Veterans Day.

These onboard events welcome all military veterans and active service members and their families, and offer an opportunity not only for well-deserved recognition, but for camaraderie and sharing experiences.

Special recognition is paid to the longest-serving military member in the room with the presentation of a special hero coin, and all veterans in attendance receive a commemorative pin. Even better – all service members are entered into a drawing for a free Carnival cruise, which is given to one entrant each month!

“This is just another way to say thank you to those whose courage and bravery allow all of us the freedom to cruise and to have fun,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador.

Carnival Cruise Line began the Military Appreciation Gatherings in 2016, and now hosts more than 1,500 such events each year that are attended by tens of thousands of guests. Many of these events are held in the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge on ships that feature that specially-themed venue.

In July, the cruise line announced that the single events are being expanded to full-day tributes, and each Military Appreciation Day will include special messages on ships’ Seaside Theater screens, raising the U.S. flag in the atrium (on sailings of four nights and longer), and other special activities throughout the day.

This ensures that Carnival Cruise Line, which carries the most service members of any cruise line in the world, continues to honor veterans not just on Veterans Day, but on every sailing year-round.
