Carnival Cruise Line Announces Fleet Holiday Decoration Schedule

Holiday cruises are much beloved traditions for many cruise passengers, and a wonderful way to enjoy the cheer of the season without the stress of cleaning, cooking, decorating, and other preparations.

Ahead of the official start of the 2023 holiday season, Carnival Cruise Line has announced the dates for when each ship in the fleet will be decked out in its holiday finest.

Carnival Cruise Line Christmas 2023 Decorating Schedule

With the holiday season fast approaching, cruise guests with sailings booked in late November and early December are curious whether or not their ship will be showing off wreaths, garlands, bows, and festively-lit trees when they embark.

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has announced the holiday decorating schedule for each of the line’s 25 current vessels, as well as when the upcoming Carnival Jubilee will also be showcasing festive décor.

“I wanted to share the Christmas decorating schedule with you as our professional decoratists deck the decks with holly, ivy and of course the big tree,” Heald said.

The schedule for 2023 Carnival ship Christmas decorations is as follows (by cruise departure date):

  • November 24 – Carnival Conquest, Carnival Radiance
  • November 25 – Carnival Breeze, Carnival Horizon, Mardi Gras, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Spirit
  • November 26 – Carnival Celebration, Carnival Dream, Carnival Glory, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Vista
  • November 27 – Carnival Elation, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Valor
  • November 30 – Carnival Venezia
  • December 2 – Carnival Magic, Carnival Paradise
  • December 3 – Carnival Legend, Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Pride
  • December 4 – Carnival Freedom, Carnival Splendor, Carnival Sunshine

The new Carnival Jubilee – which just completed her conveyance down the Ems river ahead of her upcoming sea trials – will be decorated beginning December 20, 2023, as she welcomes dignitaries and VIPs onboard for her initial sailing.

The very first guests to sail on the new ship, which debuts from Galveston, Texas on December 23, will be the first ever to see her holiday celebrations.

Why Are Ships Decorated on Different Dates?

The schedule for decorating different cruise ships for the holidays depends on a variety of factors. Because seasonal decorations are not stored onboard, ships can only be in port while the decorations are loaded and set up.

Furthermore, most cruise lines employ separate professionals to hang holiday decorations, as regular crew members already have full schedules with their assigned duties. This ensures the ships can be fully decorated in just the few hours between when one cruise ends and the next begins later the same day.

Occasionally, decorations must be shipped to different homeports, and that may delay a ship’s decorating schedule until later in the season to ensure the proper materials and supplies arrive for the full decorating ensemble.

When Are Holiday Decorations Removed?

Carnival’s ships will remain fully in festive mode through January 1, 2024, but will typically lose their decorations on the first turnaround day in the new year, even if that is January 2 or 3.

Just as the initial decoration dates vary, so too do the dates when decorations are removed, but in general, all holiday decor is stowed away within the first week of January.

On rare occasions, it may be necessary to remove decorations before the new year officially begins, such as if a ship is entering a dry dock or beginning an extensive longer sailing that will take it far from where holiday decorations may be stored.

In these rare situations, however, it is more likely that decorations would simply be packed away onboard after the new year, and removed from the ship at the first available opportunity to be stored until the next holiday season.

Royal Caribbean Raising Gratuity Rates for All Passengers

Royal Caribbean International is quietly raising its daily gratuity rate for all guests next month. Travelers who have prepaid gratuities for an upcoming cruise, regardless of the sailing date, are not impacted, and guests with upcoming cruises can prepay to lock in the current lower rate but must do so before setting sail or they will be subject to the new, higher rate once onboard.

Royal Caribbean Gratuity Rate Increase

Beginning on Saturday, November 11, 2023, the automatic gratuity rates for all Royal Caribbean guests will increase $2 (USD) per person, per day regardless of passengers’ age or stateroom category. This will make the new rate $18 for all non-suite staterooms (interior, ocean view, balcony, etc.) and junior suite classifications, and $20.50 for guests in suites.

The previous rate, which began September 7, 2022, was $16 per person, per day for most stateroom categories, and $18.50 for suites. Before that, gratuities were $14.50 per person, per day in most staterooms, and $17.50 per person, per day in suites.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deck

Gratuities are added to guests’ onboard accounts daily and are shared among various staff members, including dining servers, stateroom attendants, and several behind-the-scenes positions who work very hard to ensure all passengers have a memorable cruise vacation.

According to Royal Caribbean’s website, “The automatic daily gratuity is based on customary industry standards. Applying this charge automatically helps streamline the recognition process for the crew members who work to enhance your cruise. We hope you find the gratuity to be an accurate reflection of your satisfaction and thank you for your generous recognition of our staff.”

It should be noted that the automatic gratuity applied to beverage purchases, mini-bar items, and spa and salon purchases is not changing and remains at 18% of the charge at this time.

Pre-Pay to Save

Guests who choose to pre-pay their gratuities prior to sailing will be able to do so at the previous, lower rate, at least for the time being. The language of pre-paying is unclear, and after November 11, 2023, it is possible that all guests – whether they are pre-paying or paying onboard – may be assessed gratuities at the increased rate.

This does give guests with future bookings the opportunity to pre-pay now, however, and take advantage of the lower rate. Onboard, no matter what the sailing date, guests who pre-pay are not assessed any additional gratuity charge other than for beverage purchases, items from their in-cabin mini-bar, or if they make purchases at the ship’s spa or salon.

Royal Caribbean does permit guests to modify the daily amount at their discretion onboard, “in the unlikely event that a guest onboard being charged the daily automatic gratuity rate does not receive satisfactory service.”

Passengers may pre-pay gratuities up to 48 hours before their cruise departure date. After that time, no pre-payment is possible and automatic gratuities will be charged to guests’ onboard accounts during their cruise.

Rates Now Comparable to Other Cruise Lines

With this rate increase, Royal Caribbean’s gratuities are indeed aligned similarly to other cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Line, for example, charges service gratuities of $16 per person, per day in standard staterooms and $18 per person, per day in suites, while Norwegian Cruise Line charges $20 for the highest suite levels, $18 for mid-level suites, and $16 for all other stateroom types (all rates per person, per day).

Disney Cruise Line has noticeably lower rates of $14.50 per person, per day in most stateroom types, while concierge staterooms and suites are charged $15.50 per person, per day. Disney Cruise Line does already have notably higher fares than other cruise lines, however.

Once one cruise line raises rates, it may not be long before other cruise lines follow suit and travelers may see increases on other mainstream cruise lines in the coming weeks and months.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Bitterness Over Sweet Souvenir

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has offered guests advice and commiseration about reportedly watered-down vanilla purchased in Cozumel, Mexico, but with a bittersweet reminder that the cruise line has no control or authority over local retailers in ports of call. How can travelers be sure they’re getting quality merchandise?

Carnival Cruise Line Deals With “Vanilla Gate”

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald fields hundreds of questions, comments, and requests from guests nearly every day. Some requests are simple, some are outrageous, and some spark great controversy among other loyal Carnival cruisers.

Lately, comments about a very popular souvenir – Mexican vanilla – have begun to be more forceful and distressing.

Apparently, some guests have been communicating that the vanilla they have purchased while on a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, has actually been watered down and is of far inferior quality and what travelers come to expect from this sought-after flavoring, typically marketed as “double strength” “pure” “two-fold” “gourmet” or “baker’s vanilla” – sometimes all on the same label.

Guests have commented to Heald that shops selling the lesser quality vanilla should be shut down and that the cruise line should do something about the practice. Heald has graciously responded to the upset guests, being clear about the cruise line’s influence and responsibility.

“We do not own the shops in Cozumel, we don’t have any control over what they sell, and we cannot close them down,” Heald said. “Please shop carefully!”

The comments are apparently being associated only with Cozumel – the busiest cruise port in the world – but may also apply to vanilla purchases in other Mexican ports of call.

Is Vanilla Really Being Tampered With?

It is possible, however, that the impacted guests may have inadvertently purchased a different variety of vanilla with a different manufacturing process that may result in various concentrations or flavor profiles.

While unscrupulous practices and actual watering-down of the vanilla could also be at play, but no evidence of tampering or substitutions has been provided.

It is also possible that guests may be misreading labels or misunderstanding how the vanilla is bottled. It is common for the ingredients to include pure vanilla, ethyl alcohol (as a preservative), and water. This does not mean, however, that the vanilla is “watered down” or otherwise of lesser quality.

Cruise visitors should always be conscientious when they shop. Checking labels carefully, as well as noting whether the bottle’s seal is intact, is essential to ensure a safe and authentic purchase. Guests can also check the bottom of a bottle for any sign of tampering, such as unknown holes or punctures that could indicate a contaminated bottle.

Choosing to shop at port retailers in duty free areas is another way to help ensure one is buying authentic Mexican vanilla from a reputable retailer, rather than venturing outside the port area for an unlabeled and possibly unregulated store. The prices may be cheaper, but the quality may also be suspect.

Mexican vanilla is a popular souvenir for many cruise guests to buy, and often family members, friends, and neighbors may request a few extra bottles when they know someone is going on a cruise.

The “double strength” vanilla, made by using twice as many beans in the manufacturing process, is richly flavorful and can be used at half amounts in North American or European recipes (only half a teaspoon is needed if a teaspoon is called for in the recipe, for example). This makes using Mexican vanilla economically wise for many frequent or professional bakers.

Using the vanilla at full strength also adds a much stronger flavor to cakes, cookies, pies, fudges, and other recipes, but without extra liquid that could unbalance a delicate recipe or cause texture changes.

Mexican vanilla is also available in a clear variety, ensuring the flavoring does not discolor icing or dough so treats are true-to-color. Bottles are available in various sizes, so every traveler can stock up as needed for their own baking and cooking preferences.

Many bakers – even casual home cooks – are loyal to particular, time-tested ingredients. Once switching to Mexican vanilla, however, few will switch back to other varieties. Running low is a great reason to book another cruise to Mexico!

Royal Caribbean Clarifies Venue Access for Loyal Guests

After several recent changes to onboard exclusive lounges have led to confusion about which guests can access which lounge at which time, Royal Caribbean International has issued more clarification on the loyalty lounges.

While there are no further changes at this time, the clarification can help travelers better understand which spaces are available to enjoy.

Lounge Access Clarified

The Crown & Anchor Society Director, Courtney Brant, has reached out to members of Royal Caribbean’s loyalty program to clarify exclusive onboard lounge access.

The ability to enjoy an exclusive space with dedicated service and special events is a popular perk of the upper tiers of the Crown & Anchor Society, but more crowded ships and more passengers reaching top tier status is requiring some adjustments to who is able to access which lounge at different times.

“I know many of you have questions about a new policy we recently implemented on a small number of sailings, which makes temporary adjustments to the access of certain venues, such as the Crown Lounge, Suite and Concierge Lounges, Suite Sun Deck, and Coastal Kitchen,” Brant acknowledged.

Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge
Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge (Photo Credit: Jerry Sharp / Shutterstock)

Each of these spaces is reserved for certain cruisers, either depending on their loyalty status or what type of stateroom they have booked.

The Crown Lounge – formerly known as the Diamond Lounge – will only be available to Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club members during the evening hours, with beverage service from 5-8 p.m.

Brant stresses, however, that “the lounge and its services will remain fully accessible to all Diamond and above members at all other times.”

The morning continental breakfast, daily snacks, and concierge service hours will still be available to all qualifying travelers.

Points May Determine Access

Similarly, the Suite Lounge or Concierge Lounge, Suite Sun Deck, and Coastal Kitchen will be limited to only guests in qualifying suites along with top Pinnacle Club members onboard, which will be determined based on cruise points.

This may mean that not all Pinnacle Club members on the same sailing may have access, depending on overall occupancy and how many points individual guests have accrued.

Royal Caribbean’s Pinnacle Club is the elite of the elite, and travelers must have a minimum of 700 cruise points to join those ranks. A guest with 900 points, however, would be granted Suite Lounge access before a traveler with 725 points, however, despite both being members of the Pinnacle Club with the same overall benefits.

Access will also depend on how many suite guests are onboard each individual sailing, and how many total guests are in each Pinnacle Club guests’ stateroom. All guests in the room – even if they have not all achieved the same number of points – will be extended lounge privileges.

Changes Not Universal

All loyal Royal Caribbean cruisers should note that these restrictions to lounge access are both intermittent and temporary, and will vary greatly between individual sailings. On cruises with fewer suite staterooms or fewer top-tier loyalty members, for example, it may not be necessary to restrict access at all.

The cruises most likely to be impacted are those aboard the line’s newer vessels, particularly Wonder of the Seas and the two upcoming ships in 2024, Icon of the Seas in January and Utopia of the Seas in July.

Brand new ships always attract great interest from experienced cruisers who are eager to try out a new vessel and see what changes and innovations it brings to the fleet.

Similarly, certain sailings – maiden voyages, transatlantic crossings or transpacific cruises, holiday itineraries, etc. – are also more popular with experienced cruisers and may need more lounge access restrictions to compensate for that increased popularity.

Depending on how restrictions must be invoked, travelers will be notified either in the days before they set sail or else with a welcome aboard letter onboard as to any changes in lounge access or other loyalty benefits for their specific cruise.

Massive New Carnival Cruise Ship Completes Complex Milestone

Carnival Jubilee has set a fleet first before even officially joining Carnival Cruise Line as she has completed a tricky navigation of the river Ems in northwest Germany, reaching the North Sea where her sea trials will take place. The new ship is the first ever in the Carnival fleet to complete the conveyance, as the ship is the first to have been built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Carnival Jubilee Conveyance Successful

The 182,800-gross-ton Carnival Jubilee successfully transferred down the River Ems from Papenburg, Germany to Eemshaven, Netherlands from early Monday morning, October 30, 2023, until her arrival in Eemshaven early Tuesday morning.

The tricky conveyance involved manuvering the massive ship not only through the river’s twists and turns, under a number of bridges, and through narrow channels, but also sailing backward for better navigation along the challenging route.

Two tugboats supported the journey and assisted with maneuvering as needed, and a group of Ems River pilots from the Pilot Brotherhood of Emden led the procedure with their expertise and state-of-the-art technology.

Sea Trials Just Days Away

With Carnival Jubilee now successfully at the mouth of the river in the Wadden Sea, preparations are underway for her first round of sea trials – slated to begin on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

The ship’s sea trials will test her full functional capabilities, from straight cruising to emergency stops, turns of different degrees and swiftness, navigation, maximum speed, and much more. These tests are critical to ensure all the ship’s systems are functioning properly and work together for most efficient operation.

The length of sea trials can vary from just a day or two to as long as two weeks, depending on the extent of the testing, local weather conditions that may cause delays, and how the ship performs, including whether or not any individual tests need to be redone.

During the sea trials, the ship’s full complement of officers, technicians, and engineers will be onboard for the testing as well as to begin familiarizing themselves with the vessel’s operation, layout, and procedures. After successful testing, Carnival Jubilee will be one step closer to her December 23, 2023 maiden voyage from Galveston, Texas.

Completion Work Continues

Even as the sea trials get underway, Carnival Jubilee is continuing to be refined as shipbuilders onboard the vessel continue with finishing details and interior work.

This includes décor for the ship’s different venues, including her ocean-themed “Currents” and “Shores” neighborhoods and their immersive artwork, LED lighting, and unique sound designs.

Seating, fixtures, and signage is being put in place for the new and exclusive Dr. Inks, Ph.D and Golden Mermaid bars, as well as the popular Emeril’s Bistro 717 – a variation of the Emeril’s installations onboard Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

Finishing touches are also being put on the Ultimate Playground with BOLT, the Ultimate Sea Coaster, the ship’s SportSquare facilities, and the WaterWorks aqua park, not to mention the intimate and immersive Grand Central space, the fan favorite Guy’s Burger Joint, and so much more the ship will offer.

Debut Less Than Two Months Away

Carnival Jubilee is scheduled to welcome guests for the first time on December 23, 2023 with her first sailing, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise from Galveston. In addition to three full days at sea for passengers to enjoy all the new ship has to offer, the itinerary includes visits to Roatan, Honduras and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The new ship will remain homeported in Galveston year-round at least through April 2026 offering the same 7-night itinerary, though port orders change depending on departure date. On each sailing, the ship will be able to welcome 5,282 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 6,465 travelers when fully booked.

Bringing the Excel-class vessel to Galveston shows Carnival Cruise Line’s commitment to the Lone Star State, as does the ship’s unique bow decoration that will forever connect her to the Texas homeport.

It will indeed be a jubilant day when the new ship arrives in Texas in less than two months!

Scotland Aims for a New Levy on Cruise Ships

The Scottish Green Party plans to introduce a new tax levy on cruise ships nationwide in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and raise additional funds for local councils. The announcement was made during the party conference held in Dunfermline on Monday, October 30, 2023.

New Levy on Cruise Ships Visiting Scotland

In partnership with the Scottish government and local authorities, Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater announced the intention to introduce the new levy, but with few details yet confirmed.

The idea is that the new taxes would become investment funds in port communities, supporting local retailers and residents that host cruise ship visits. It is also hoped that the taxes might encourage ships to invest more heavily in zero-emission vessels or other environmental upgrades.

“We will work with our partners in Local Government to empower Councils to charge visiting cruise ships a levy,” said Slater. “It will mean communities hosting cruise ships get the investment they deserve, and our aim would also be to encourage greener ships.”

While details of how the levy would be assessed are not yet determined, these intentions seem to indicate a rate that may vary based on ship size, passenger capacity, emissions ratings, or other factors, which could mean different rates for different ships. The length of a visit, time of year, and other factors may also impact levy rates.

“From Ullapool to Greenock, Kirkwall to Edinburgh, Stornoway to Rosyth and many more besides, this will make a massive difference in supporting communities,” said Mark Ruskell, Scottish Greens transport and environment spokesperson. “For all the benefits tourism brings, pressure on infrastructure, services, and how lives of locals in port areas are impacted need properly targeted help and this helps.”

What Impact Do Ships Have?

It is no surprise that cruise ships can have tremendous impacts – both positive and negative – on the communities they visit. While ship visits can be an economic boom to a region with port fees, taxes, and spending from both guests and crew members who go ashore, it is also easy for a large vessel to overwhelm a small port community with a sudden influx of thousands of travelers at once.

Furthermore, more and more communities are citing environmental concerns as reasoning to limit or otherwise control cruise ship visits.

Cruise Ship Smokestack

Slater stated the idea that “one ship produces the same amount of carbon emissions as 12,000 cars” – a figure without reference as to its authenticity other than to say “a recent study” determined the comparison. It is true, however, that docked ships that still use their engines do produce large amounts of pollutants, a problem that more and more communities are seeking to eliminate.

A similar bold figure was mentioned in New York City in September during a rally in support of a law to require cruise ships to hook up to shore power.

What would people say if right behind us, right now, there were 34,400 trucks idling?” asked city councilmember Erik Bottcher said at the rally near the Red Hook cruise terminal on Monday, September 18. “There’d be a lot of cameras here right now, and guess what? Something would be done about it. But that’s how much pollution is being generated by these ships.”

Neither vehicle-comparison number is immediately referenced by a study title or other reporting.

New Trend in Europe Against Harmful Cruise Ships

Despite the benefits that can be had from cruise ship visits, many European communities are seeking to limit visits to protect their communities and local environments from potentially harmful or overwhelming impacts.

For example, Barcelona began implementing a partial ban on cruise ships on October 22, 2023, no longer permitting ships to dock at the northern docks closer to the city center.

Venice has implemented an even stronger ban on cruise ships, no longer permitting any vessels at its docks at the famous St. Mark’s Square. That ban has been in place since August 2021 and is intended not only to curb excessive tourism and pollution, but also to preserve the delicate nature of the City of Bridges.

Another popular Scottish destination, the Orkney Islands, is also investigating limits on cruise ships to better balance the desires of tourists with the needs of local residents, but without an outright ban.

It isn’t just in Europe that cruise ship limits and bans are being implemented or considered. Ports of call in Alaska, Maine, and Florida are all in different stages of cruise ship restrictions, with varying degrees of success and support.

Second Oldest Carnival Cruise Ship Returns to Service

She’s currently the second oldest ship in the Carnival Cruise fleet and just one of two Fantasy-class vessels that remain, but the cruise line is not giving up on Carnival Paradise yet by completing another dry dock refurbishment. The ship is now refreshed and renovated, with new spaces and upgrades to the popular Fantasy-class vessel.

Carnival Paradise Returns After Dry Dock

Fresh out of a 16-day dry dock, Carnival Paradise has welcomed guests again as she begins her twenty-sixth year of service with Carnival Cruise Line. The ship first entered service on November 25, 1998, and over the years has undergone various dry docks, refits, and renovations to stay a guest favorite.

This most recent dry dock, which was completed in Freeport, Bahamas, upgraded the adults-only Serenity Retreat and expanded the ship’s Majestic Casino, as well as refreshed other public areas with replacements to flooring, upholstery, and other materials as needed.

The piano bar has also been updated, and will once again be a nighttime hotspot for music and camaraderie, while the miniature golf course has been thoroughly redone and refurbished to look like new again.

Other typical updates on this type of refurbishment will have included paint, decking, lighting, and similar fixes and upgrades, as well as behind-the-scenes technical updates to both software and hardware in different departments to keep the ship functioning at peak efficiency.

Now Sailing Out of Tampa, Florida

The 71,925-gross-ton Carnival Paradise is homeported year-round from Tampa, Florida, offering a variety of 4-, 5-, and 6-night Western Caribbean and Bahamas sailings.

This first post-dry-dock sailing is a 6-night itinerary that departed on Monday, October 30, 2023 and will visit Key West, Florida for spooky Halloween fun on October 31. A day at sea follows before the ship arrives in Montego Bay, Jamaica on Thursday and Friday will be spent in George Town, Grand Cayman.

After another day at sea – a great time to try out that newly refreshed mini golf course – Carnival Paradise will return to Tampa on Sunday, November 5.

Carnival Paradise Mini Golf
Carnival Paradise Mini Golf

Depending on the departure date and cruise length, Carnival Paradise‘s upcoming itineraries will also visit other popular ports of call such as Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Once Carnival Cruise Line’s exclusive private destination – Celebration Key – opens on Grand Bahama Island in July 2025, select itineraries of Carnival Paradise will also visit that new tropical hotspot.

On each sailing, the Fantasy-class ship – one of the smallest ships in the Carnival fleet – will welcome 2,124 passengers at double occupancy, or up to 2,606 if fully booked with all berths filled. Also on board are approximately 920 international crew members to deliver service truly worthy of a trip to paradise.

Guest Reaction

Many experienced Carnival cruise guests are thrilled that Carnival Paradise is now refreshed and sailing again, as the small ship is a favorite for many travelers who prefer a more intimate vessel.

Carnival Paradise and her sister ship, Carnival Elation (currently sailing from Jacksonville, Florida) are the only two remaining ships in Carnival’s once industry-leading Fantasy class.

Five of the other six ships in the class were sold or scrapped during the pandemic shutdown as part of fleet modernization efforts. Carnival Ecstasy was the only ship in the class to have a farewell sendoff, as the ship was retired in October 2022 after a final voyage that included a variety of commemorative events and special activities.

Hopefully, with this new refurbishment giving her rejuvenated vibrancy, Carnival Paradise will enjoy many more years of welcoming guests and setting sail for a paradise of fun.

Holland America Brings Guests Back to Maui With Special Cause

In August this year, a large part of Maui was devastated by terrible wildfires. Holland America Line now aims to bring tourism back to Maui, with the addition of guests being able to donate additional funds and participate in fundraisers while sailing to the Hawaiian Islands.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is encouraging people to visit the parts of Maui unaffected by the wildfires, to enable tourism to pick up again. Holland America Line, on its part, is offering guests steeply discounted cruises to boost tourism numbers.

Cruising to Revive Tourism

In a bid to rekindle tourism in Maui, Holland America Line has unveiled a new offer for its upcoming cruises to Hawaii. The cruise line is offering savings of up to 25% on all fall 2023 through spring 2024 Hawaii departures.

The itineraries, ranging from 16 to 35 days, will sail roundtrip from San Diego, California, or from San Diego to Vancouver, Canada, featuring stops at the Hawaiian ports of Honolulu, Hilo, Kahului, Kona, and Nawiliwili.

The announcement comes after Hawaii Governor Josh Green urged people in August this year to return to Maui, following the devastating wildfires that ravaged parts of the island.

“All the other areas of Maui, and the rest of Hawai’i, they’re safe, they’re open and they’re available,” Green said. “The mystique and love here, the aloha, is here for you, and the reason I say that is because when you come you will support our local economy and help speed the recovery of the people that are suffering right now,” Green said.

Volendam and Koningsdam Sailing to Hawaii

Cruises onboard the 61,214 gross tons Volendam and the 99,863 gross tons Koningsdam all feature an overnight or late-night departure from Honolulu, besides the calls to Hilo, Kahului, Kona, and Nawiliwili. Guests will also be able to visit Ensenada, Mexico, as well as Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Sailings depart between November 2023, and April 2024, and range in length between 16 and 18 days. All cruises sail roundtrip from San Diego, or from San Diego to Vancouver, Canada.

Holland America Line also offers several Collectors’ Voyages that combine a Hawaii cruise with a Mexico sailing, and a 35-day “Hawaii, Tahiti and Marquesas” Legendary Voyage.

Also included in the offer that Holland America Line introduced today, October 30, is Koningsdam‘s 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise. The cruise will sail along the coast of Mexico for the eclipse before crossing to Hawaii

Beth Bodensteiner, the Chief Commercial Officer at Holland America Line: “Our Hawaii sale is an incredible opportunity to take advantage of exceptional rates on cruises that perfectly blend sea days and beautiful ports, so guests can really experience the ships as well as the Hawaiian Islands.”

Fundraising for Maui’s Recovery

In addition to reinvigorating tourism, Holland America Line is also introducing several efforts to aid Maui’s recovery from the recent wildfires.

Through their On Deck for a Cause program, guests are invited to contribute a minimum of $25 to partake in a non-competitive 5k walk around the ship’s deck. The funds raised will be directed to Direct Relief, an organization providing essential medical resources to the island.

Holland America On Deck for a Cause
Holland America On Deck for a Cause

“Our Hawaii cruises also are special because we’re raising funds through On Deck for a Cause to help Maui recover from the devastating fires, and our guests and team members appreciate being part of the effort,” Bodensteiner continued.

Bringing the tourism industry back to strength on Maui is one aspect that will bring economic benefits to the local population, helping them recover from the hardships they endured.

It is something that is often overlooked when people consider the cruise industry: the ways in which two cruise ships, such as Volendam and Koningsdam can help in the recovery after disasters.

Overboard From Royal Caribbean Ship Has Successful Rescue

An individual who went overboard from a Royal Caribbean ship was quickly rescued off the west coast of Spain on Sunday night, thanks to the fast actions of the ship’s crew.

The incident occurred on Symphony of the Seas, on the first night of the ship’s repositioning sailing after ending her Mediterranean cruise season.

Person Overboard From Symphony of the Seas

Guests onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Symphony of the Seas have reported the “Oscar! Oscar! Oscar!” emergency call heard just after 11 p.m. on Sunday night, October 29, 2023.

This emergency call signifies a person overboard, and warrants immediate attention for all crew members. The Oasis-class ship began turning right away, and was diverted from its course for approximately one hour while the water was searched for the overboard individual.

Shortly afterward, the ship’s captain announced that the rescue had been successful and the individual was receiving appropriate care in the ship’s medical center. Their overall condition was not announced.

The incident happened approximately halfway between Barcelona and Valencia, Spain. Symphony of the Seas had departed Barcelona at 5 p.m., with Valencia as its first destination on the 14-night transatlantic cruise that will bring the ship to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the winter Caribbean season.

No details have been released about the person overboard, and it is unknown whether the individual is a guest onboard or a crew member. Similarly, the person’s age, gender, and other identifying details have not been released so as to safeguard everyone’s privacy at this difficult time.

The circumstances of the overboard are not yet known, but a full investigation will be held to determine how the incident happened and whether or not any safety violations are noted. Support will likely be offered both to the individual and others close to them if necessary.

Symphony of the Seas has arrived in Valencia as planned for her port-of-call visit on Monday, October 30, and there should be no impact on the remainder of the ship’s itinerary. As she crosses the Atlantic Ocean, the ship will also call on Cadiz, Spain and Nassau in the Bahamas before arriving in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

From Fort Lauderdale, the 228,018-gross-ton ship will offer a variety of Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean itineraries through early May 2024, at which time she will move to New York to offer Bahamas cruises from the Big Apple through October 2024.

Symphony of the Seas can welcome 5,518 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 6,680 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are approximately 2,200 international crew members.

Overboard incidents are not common on cruise ships considering the tens of thousands of travelers and crew members who safely sail each week, but such unfortunate events do happen.

In late July, a woman went overboard from Spectrum of the Seas while the ship was sailing to Singapore, and in April, an Australian man went overboard from Quantum of the Seas en route from Australia to Hawaii.

Overboard incidents are not limited to Royal Caribbean ships, of course. All cruise lines have needed to deal with such difficult incidents when sailing in any region of the world. Foul play, accidents, and intentional overboards all happen depending on individual circumstances and behaviors.

When an overboard is reported, emergency operations are immediately initiated onboard the ship, and the closest local authorities are notified for assistance as needed. Search efforts may continue for several hours or even days, depending on local conditions and the expectations of survival.

Fortunately, an extended search was not required in this instance, and Cruise Hive commends the quick actions of the crew aboard Symphony of the Seas that led to this successful rescue.
