Port Canaveral Plans New Cruise Terminal to Meet Growing Demand

Port Canaveral, already one of the world’s busiest passenger cruise ports, has announced a plan for a brand new cruise terminal to open in just two years. The fast expansion is possible by strategic use of existing berth space with planned modifications to accommodate a variety of the largest ships from multiple cruise lines.

The new terminal will be at the existing North 8 berth space on the port’s north side, sharing the basin with Cruise Terminal 5 but improving on the facility to maximize its usage flexibility for different cruise brands.

Cruise Terminal 5 is most frequently – though not exclusively – used by Royal Caribbean International ships. The new Cruise Terminal 6 would be available for different lines depending on overall scheduling and operational needs.

“We have cruise partners with immediate needs to locate assets in Florida and Port Canaveral is where they want to be,” said Captain John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO. “Our ability to efficiently bring a new cruise terminal online was key to retaining and growing this important business segment that supports many jobs and delivers high value to our regional and state economy.”

The new terminal will be able to be built quickly because much of the infrastructure is already in place. Furthermore, the location of the new terminal on the port’s north side ensures minimal disruption to current operations, which will permit faster construction while accommodating existing cruise schedules.

North 8 berth was built in 2018 with flexibility in mind and already features 1,020 linear feet for docking. The new construction will extend that to 1,344 feet to accommodate larger vessels.

A new parking garage able to serve 3,000 vehicles, as well as roadway improvements and a flyover ramp to connect the facility to State Road 401, are part of the development plan for the new cruise terminal. An additional area for future parking expansion is also further east of the new site.

While the overall timeline for construction is not yet finalized, the planned completion date is summer 2026. This is an ambitious timeline and will help foster additional growth and growing demand for cruise travel from the Space Coast.

“A new cruise terminal and the business it will deliver builds on our Board’s commitment to the economic prosperity of our Port community,” said Micah Loyd, Chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners. “This proactive, business-oriented strategy reaffirms our commitment to ensure the State of Florida continues to prosper from cruise tourism and remains the ‘Cruise Capital of the World.’”

The official announcement of the new cruise terminal comes two months after Port Canaveral announced that a local marina’s lease would not be removed in preparation for port enhancements. That local marina, however, is on the south side of the port facilities.

Cruising From Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral offers sailings from various cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

In addition, several cruise lines include Port Canaveral as a port of call visit on select itineraries. MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean International both offer day visits to the port, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy beaches, Kennedy Space Center, and other local attractions.

Over the next two years, while the new cruise terminal is under construction, great growth is expected at Port Canaveral, beginning with Royal Caribbean’s sixth Oasis-class ship, Utopia of the Seas, which is just weeks away from arriving at her new homeport.

In November, two cruise lines will begin their first-ever homeport operations from Port Canaveral. Princess Cruises will homeport Caribbean Princess from Port Canaveral for 38 sailings, while Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Equinox will offer a full winter of Caribbean and Bahamas cruises from the port.

Disney Cruise Line’s upcoming Disney Treasure, sister ship to Disney Wish, will also homeport from Port Canaveral beginning in December, and Royal Caribbean’s second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas, is scheduled to join the port’s lineup in August 2025.

With such a great variety of cruise lines, ship styles, and itinerary options available, the expansion at Port Canaveral will be very welcome and will offer even more options to eager cruise travelers.

MSC Cruises Ship Brings Deceased Whale Into New York

MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia sadly arrived in New York with a deceased whale trapped on its bow bulb on Saturday, May 4, following a 6-night cruise to Bermuda. It is unknown whether the ship impacted and killed the whale, or simply contacted the already deceased animal and unfortunately toted it along.

The whale has been identified as a mature female sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), the third-largest type of baleen whale in the world. This particular whale measured 44 feet long, though full-grown sei whales can reach 56-64 feet in length. The species is listed as officially endangered.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sei whales can reach speeds over 34 miles per hour – faster than MSC Meraviglia‘s top cruising speed of 26 mph.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” cruise line officials stated. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life.”

The dead whale was towed from the Port of Brooklyn to Sandy Hook, New Jersey – just across Raritan Bay. There the cetacean was examined and a necropsy performed to help determine the cause of death and whether the cruise ship contributed to the animal’s demise.

Preliminary study from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society showed tissue trama along the whale’s right shoulder blade and a right flipper fracture, as well as relatively fresh food in its stomach. This may indicate the whale was feeding at its time of death.

NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement is also investigating the incident in relation to the whale’s death and whether MSC Cruises is at fault.

“All dolphins, porpoises, and whales are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which makes touching, feeding, or otherwise harming these animals illegal,” the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society noted.

To be clear, it is not yet confirmed whether or not the cruise ship caused the whale’s death, or if the vessel simply impacted the body in such a way as to snag it and carry it along.

Toxicological tests will be performed on samples of the whale’s organs to determine if any pollution or contaminants are present, which will help further research on the species and what impacts its health.

The 171,598-gross-ton ship has already departed on her next voyage, an 8-night Canada and New England sailing with port visits to Newport, Boston, Portland, Saint John, and Halifax. MSC Meraviglia can welcome 4,428 travelers at double occupancy, or up to 5,642 guests when fully booked with all berths filled.

Cruise Lines Do Follow Protections for Marine Life

All cruise lines do take a variety of precautions to protect marine life, including whales. This includes following all established environmental protocols to minimize marine pollution that could contaminate critical habitats, as well as noise reduction protocols in sensitive areas.

In certain sailing regions or at certain times of year, particularly close to shore where whales are known to breed or migrate, sailing speeds are dramatically reduced to permit whales plenty of time to move out of the way of approaching vessels. Slower speeds also ensure better maneuverability for larger vessels to avoid coming to close to marine life.

“We have comprehensive measures in place to help avoid collisions, such as training all our deck officers with the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and we follow regulations designed to protect whales and other marine life,” MSC Cruises said.

When protective measures are in place, cruise lines may adjust itineraries to ensure compliance with slower speed requirements. At times, ports of call may be cancelled if sailing speed will not permit a suitable visit.

It should be noted that sei whales are found worldwide, but usually prefer deeper waters further from coastlines. At this time, there is no way to determine where the whale died or how far it may have been moved by the cruise ship before arriving in New York.

Vancouver Expecting a Record-Breaking Summer Season

Between now and the end of October, the Port of Vancouver is expecting to welcome an extremely high number of cruise passengers. In the next week alone, nearly 70,000 cruise guests will arrive at the Canada Place cruise terminal

The port is anticipating approximately 1.27 million passengers to pass through its doors across 329 cruise ship calls between March 11 and October 29, 2024. This surpasses the record set in 2023 of 1.24 million cruisers to visit the downtown Vancouver port in the same time period by about 2%.

This is largely because Vancouver, Canada, is a popular homeport for cruise ships during the Alaska season, and is frequently included on itineraries even when it’s not the designated homeport. With the 2024 Alaska season looking to be extra busy, Canada’s largest cruise port is warning locals about the potential crowds.

“While record numbers of cruise tourists visiting our region will provide a vital boost for local businesses and tourism providers, it will also mean anyone planning to visit Canada Place or nearby areas downtown should plan ahead and expect increased crowds and traffic,” said Mandy Chan, cruise services manager at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The worst of the crowds are expected to be in the city between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, which is the window in which most cruise ships are in the port.

However, even with the influx of extra visitors, the British Columbian port is prepared to meet the demand. After over 40 years of welcoming cruisers, the staff has embarkation and disembarkation down to a science. The large port has three berths to accommodate up to four large ships at a time.

On particularly busy days, such as weekends throughout spring and summer when the port expects to welcome upwards of 30,000 passengers across multiple ships, Vancouver Police Department’s traffic authority will be brought in to help manage the flow of auto and pedestrian traffic.

Alaska Cruises In High Demand For 2024 Season

The influx of cruise tourism in Vancouver is a side effect of the busier than normal Alaska cruise season, with cruise ships from popular brands like Disney Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, and Cunard Line all homeporting from or calling on the Canadian port.

It’s so busy that the port of Juneau, Alaska, which is expecting a record-breaking 1.7 million cruise guests in 2024, has been taking measures to impose a cap on the number of ships that can visit per day to mitigate crowds.

Indeed, demand for Alaskan cruises has been at an all-time high for 2024, perhaps still in part because of built-up demand from the coronavirus pandemic.

Princess Cruises, for example, experienced a boom in their bookings at the beginning of the year. In January of 2024, the cruise line experienced a record-breaking 20% surge in Alaska bookings, the highest in the cruise line’s history for this time period.

Similarly, Holland America Line smashed its single-day booking record on January 16 and concluded its best booking week during wave season a few days later on January 19, which is when cruise brands roll out their best promotional deals of the year.

The new daily record represented the best sales day Holland America had experienced since its founding in 1873, with Alaska cruises contributing to around one-third of the bookings. In order to keep up with the demand, six of the cruise line’s 11 ships will be sailing to Alaska throughout the spring and summer.

Likewise, Norwegian Cruise Line geared up for a busy season by deploying a notable portion of its fleet to the northern region. The cruise line will send five of its 19 ships – Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Sun, and Norwegian Spirit – to Alaska at least once during the season.

Carnival Ship to Continue to Sail From Norfolk – One Cruise at a Time

Guests booked aboard the May 12 departure of Carnival Pride have only just received confirmation that their ship will be both departing from and returning to Norfolk, Virginia rather than Baltimore, Maryland as originally scheduled. While this is not unexpected news, passengers are surprised that the cruise line is waiting until less than four days prior to embarkation to confirm those plans.

Carnival Cruise Line did reach out to booked guests two days earlier to let them know that the final decision of which port the ship would operate from would be made on Wednesday, May 8. It wasn’t until the evening, however, when the confirmation was emailed to travelers.

“Thank you for your patience as we continue to work with federal, state, and local officials to return our cruise operations to Baltimore. Our discussions make it clear that while progress is being made, additional time is still needed, so we must operate your cruise from Norfolk,” the email explained.

In the meantime, Carnival Pride must continue to operate from her temporary homeport – 235 miles (378 kilometers) away. Carnival Cruise Line shifted operations to Norfolk immediately following the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, and has continued to keep travelers updated as much as possible about upcoming sailings.

The cruise line is also providing complimentary bus transportation between Baltimore and Norfolk, but guests must register to reserve their space.

“We can only accommodate guests who sign up and pre-register for the bus service,” the email stressed. “You must pre-register to secure your spot.”

The ride between the cruise ports is approximately five hours, and a light snack and water will be provided. Shuttle service is only on embarkation day, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the last bus departing at 10:30 a.m. Travelers must register no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and in doing so, they must reserve the return trip from Norfolk to Baltimore at the end of the cruise.

The embarkation timeframe on Sunday, May 12, has been extended slightly, but all guests must be onboard no later than 4 p.m. for the ship’s departure. Carnival Pride will be sailing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary with visits to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Freeport.

All guests, whether or not they use the shuttle service, are being provided with a $100 (USD) onboard credit per stateroom in appreciation for understanding this unique and challenging situation.

When Will the Port of Baltimore Reopen?

No details about the progress toward reopening the Port of Baltimore have been released, and there is no firm date yet for when cruise operations may resume from Baltimore. Wreckage must still be removed from the Patapsco River, including the Dali, and dredging must be completed to ensure safe passage for vessels.

Port of Baltimore has released updates on the progress when appropriate. It is hoped that the port’s permanent 700-foot-wide, 50-foot-deep channel will reopen by the end of May.

Even if the channel is reopened at that time, it is possible that cruise traffic may still be suspended depending on whether the cruise terminal is needed for use as an operations center as work continues.

It should be noted that Carnival Cruise Line has no say in when the port may reopen for passenger traffic, and is doing an admirable job of assisting passengers and providing shuttle service during this unprecedented situation.

Some travelers are frustrated with the cruise line for not notifying guests earlier about which homeport their sailing will use. For the May 5 sailing, for example, guests were notified on April 23 about their Norfolk departure – 12 days before embarkation.

The shortening of time between notification and embarkation, however, could be a good sign that it is becoming more and more likely that the Port of Baltimore is closer to reopening. Guests booked on any Carnival Pride sailing in the coming weeks should stay in close communication with the cruise line for updates to their homeport arrangements.

Boston Begins What Will Be a Record-Breaking Cruise Season

The Massachusetts Port Authority, along with local officials and community leaders, has celebrated the official beginning of the 2024 cruise season from Flynn Cruiseport Boston. This year promises to be a record-breaking year for the popular northeastern homeport, with eight ships homeporting and a wide variety of sailings offered to appeal to many different cruise guests.

Flynn Cruiseport Boston is scheduled to host 169 visits from 25 cruise lines through November, up 15% from the 149 visits in 2023. This includes 79 homeport departures and 90 port of call visits that will bring tourists to the Boston region for outstanding visits.

“We are excited to kick off the start of the 2024 cruise season at Flynn Cruiseport Boston,” said Joseph Morris, Massport Port Director. “We are proud the growth we’ve seen in our cruise operations over the last few years, and we couldn’t do it without our cruise partners.”

Cruise lines are always investigating new offerings that will deliver culturally diverse experiences and new destinations to eager travelers, and the rich history and culture of Boston is an exciting fit. From Revolutionary War history to outstanding maritime traditions to fantastic sports and more, visitors can enjoy a wide range of sites and activities in the unique cosmopolitan destination.

My favorite? Don’t miss the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, located less than two miles from the cruise terminal, though my husband would recommend the tour of Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball.

“Boston is an exceptional city that our guests enjoy sailing from, and it plays a critical role to our long-term presence on the east coast,” said Juan Kuryla, Senior Vice President of Port Development and Construction of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“While we are excited to celebrate Norwegian Gem’s return for another season, we are equally eager to continue to explore opportunities with Massport to enhance the current facility to allow larger ships and more guests to cruise from Boston.”

Every sailing helps support Boston’s economy and the economic health of the broader region. Not only are tourist attractions impacted, but retailers, restaurants, hotels, transportation, and other economic sectors all benefit from the cruise industry.

“Boston is the preeminent cruise port for New England and plays a very important role in our tourism economy. It supports thousands of jobs and serves as an economic engine for the Commonwealth. We look forward to welcoming cruise passengers to Boston and New England so they can explore all this region has to offer,” said Morris.

Flynn Cruiseport Boston supports nearly 2,200 jobs either directly or indirectly, and generates $135.5 million in local economic impact annually, as well as $40 million in tax revenue, according to the 2018 Martin Economic Impact Report.

“The cruise industry is a vital part of the overall visitor economy in Boston, and working with our partners at Flynn Cruiseport over the past several years we have really elevated Boston as a port and destination,” said Martha Sheridan, President and CEO of Meet Boston.

Sailing From Boston

Eight cruise ships from six cruise lines are homeporting from Flynn Cruiseport Boston in 2024. Norwegian Gem has already begun her season offering Bermuda and Maine itineraries, and will also offer Canada and New England sailings in the fall, when colorful foliage is a highlight attraction.

Holland America Line’s Volendam will begin homeporting from Boston on May 11 with one-way cruises of different lengths between Boston and Montreal, with some other special itineraries on her agenda. Of special note is the ship’s July 27 departure, a 24-night roundtrip Canada, New England, and Iceland itinerary.

Two ships will begin homeporting from Boston in July in preparation for the fall season. Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess will set sail from Boston beginning July 14 with Canada and New England itineraries, with a special Greenland cruise leaving August 11. Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam will follow less than a week later with her first departure on July 20 for a series of Canada and New England sailings.

Celebrity Eclipse will begin a short season from Boston on August 28, followed quickly by Norwegian Jade on August 29. Both ships will be offering week-long Canada and New England itineraries to top ports in the region.

Royal Caribbean International’s Jewel of the Seas will offer seven sailings from Boston beginning with a 15-night Greenland cruise departing September 7, followed by 7-night sailings during the peak autumn season.

Finally, Oceania Cruises’ Nautica is the last ship to begin a season from Boston on September 11 with just a few departures including two Bermuda sailings and options between Boston and Montreal.

Carnival’s New Cruise Port Is Revitalizing Grand Bahama’s Economy

Carnival Corporation’s latest venture, Celebration Key, is rapidly progressing as a private destination designed for cruise passengers.

But notably, the project, expected to bring 2.2 million guests to the Bahamas annually when it opens in 2025, is making headway for its impact on its locale on Grand Bahamas island. It has been revealed that over 85% of the contracted companies engaged in building the new facility are from Grand Bahama.

The construction of Celebration Key, a private port 20 miles east of Freeport, Grand Bahama, involves more than 180 local workers and 29 Bahamian construction companies. This direct employment circulates financial benefits within the community and supports local enterprises.

Further economic contributions come from the project’s scale and infrastructure developments. With a recent $100 million investment to extend the pier to accommodate two additional ships by 2026, the port is expected to create over 700 permanent jobs across various sectors, such as retail, food and beverage, and shore excursions.

Carnival has really demonstrated its belief in Grand Bahamians. Local companies are working on all aspects of this development, giving us a unique opportunity to employ so many local people,” said Lionel Jervis, project manager at KFL Construction. “We are all gaining invaluable experience on a groundbreaking project, working together to build something that will be extremely impactful for the future of Grand Bahama.

Carnival has committed to significant local participation in the operation phase, as well. It promises that at least 75% of the businesses operating within the port will be owned by Bahamians.

A New Bahamian Escape with Exclusive Portals

Carnival Corporation’s Celebration Key, set to open in July 2025, will provide a unique escape on the island of Grand Bahama to Carnival Cruise Line passengers. Carnival Corporation’s Holland American Line, Princess Cruises, and Cunard Line may also call on the private resort, which will offer a range of amenities and attractions, dining, and shopping.

Divided into five distinct “portals,” each area will offer unique attractions and activities celebrating the vibrant culture of the Bahamas. A standout feature of Celebration Key will be Lokono Cove, a specialized area within the destination that promises an immersive Bahamian cultural experience. Here, locally owned shopkeepers will sell predominantly locally sourced merchandise.

Paradise Plaza, a brightly colored welcoming area and promenade, will be guests’ first impression and is being designed to reflect the colors, symbols, and heritage of the Bahamas. It will feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop and serve as the gateway to Celebration Key’s half-mile beachfront dedicated to water sports and relaxation.

The tranquil and more exclusive Adults-Only Private Club portal will provide private beach access, an infinity pool, and high-end dining options. The portal is also designed with an event pavilion to host special occasions, family reunions, and weddings.

A large freshwater lagoon is the highlight of the Family-Friendly portal. This area for all ages includes beach villas, sports courts, and a colorful splash pad for little ones. The lively portal will also offer a variety of dining options and entertainment.

The resort’s portals will mirror the themed areas of Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-Class ships, offering a familiar feel to the more than 500 itineraries already incorporating a call following the grand opening.

The first ship scheduled to arrive at Celebration Key will be Carnival Vista during its Southern Caribbean cruise departing from Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, on July 12. Within its first week of opening, the resort will also welcome Carnival Conquest, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Pride.

Cruise Line Makes It Easier for Passengers Who Lose Their Luggage

Losing a piece of luggage while flying to a vacation destination is always a challenge, but when the vacation is a cruise, it’s even more frustrating since the departure of a cruise ship is usually an insurmountable obstacle to retrieving the bag. But that is no longer the case with some Costa Cruises’ voyages.

The Italian cruise line, a brand of Carnival Corporation, on May 8, 2024 unveiled a program called Lost Luggage Concierge, a mechanism to find, retrieve, and deliver the lost luggage of cruise guests.

The service is the result of an exclusive agreement with SosTravel, a firm based in Italy that tracks luggage and provides other travel services.

Cruise Ship Luggage
Cruise Ship Luggage

The Lost Luggage Concierge is geared toward guests who travel to their cruise embarkation port by air and who have booked a Costa Cruises’ Fly & Cruise package, with departures in Europe from May 2024 through November 2024.

Given the limited timeframe, it appears the agreement with SosTravel could possibly be a pilot program, but Costa Cruises is not positioning it as such. The cruise line’s announcement indicates that guests who book their own airfare will soon be able to use the Lost Luggage Concierge service if they purchase it before departure on the SOS Travel website via the MyCosta app.

Under the agreement, SosTravel will assist guests who lose their luggage while en route to their cruise ship by tracking the luggage and returning it onboard the cruise ship within 48 hours — not including sailing hours.

Guests only need to report the loss at the airport and SosTravel takes over the recovery process.

Our goal is to offer our guests the best travel experiences, from every angle. The Lost Luggage Concierge service by Sostravel.com is a further step in this direction, as it will help us to ensure that our guests can start enjoying their cruise, worry-free, even before embarking, right from their departure at the airport, said Daniel Caprile, vice president of pricing and revenue management, itinerary and transportation at Costa Cruises.

Lost luggage is a growing problem for cruise guests, particularly when travelers must make connecting flights before arriving at their embarkation port. Air travel delays are common and sometimes luggage is mistakenly routed to destinations far from the cruise port city. Staff shortages, including of baggage handlers, that continue to impact the airline industry also can add to lost luggage problems.

SosTravel is a global leader in luggage tracing, having already successfully tracked about 110,000 suitcases.

The undisputed value of the agreement, and the trust of one of the largest global players in the cruise industry, represent a major growth opportunity for Sostravel.com,said Massimo Crippa, general manager of SosTravel

The company also operates Dr. Travel, a telemedicine solution for travelers, as well as various travel apps.

Agreement Will Assist Cruisers Booked on Summer Sailings

Costa Cruises’ new Lost Luggage Concierge, offered through November 2024, is meant to assist summer cruisers who are booked on its various itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. These include Costa Fortuna’s one-week sailings in Greece and Turkey, departing from Athens and calling at Istanbul, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, and Santorini.

Also, in summer 2024, the service can be used by guests booked on Costa Favolosa’s North European cruises, departing from Hamburg and sailing to the North Cape and the Lofoten Islands, Iceland and Greenland, or Scotland.

Additionally, Costa Diadema will sail one-week cruises, departing from Kiel or Copenhagen, exploring the Norwegian fjords. The cruise line has not disclosed whether the Lost Luggage Concierge will be expanded to other destinations in the future.

Cruise Ship Rescues Three Sailors Adrift at Sea After Mayday Call

It’s the stuff of nightmares and something that every sailor hopes to never happen to them; being adrift at sea because your boat becomes damaged. It’s a situation that three sailors, two men, and a woman, experienced when their mast broke and they experienced a loss of power onboard their catamaran sailing yacht.

En route from Queensland, Australia, to Noumea, New Caledonia, the three sailors ended up adrift at sea for three days, hoping for a ship to come close enough to receive their distress calls.

Luckily for them, the P&O Cruises Australia cruise ship Pacific Encounter and her 3,000 guests onboard did indeed receive the mayday call. The cruise ship sailed from Brisbane, Australia, on May 3, spending the day at sea on May 4 to Noumea when they received the distress signal.

It had been a stroke of luck for the three sailors that they were found after just three days at sea, while the sailors still had enough provisions onboard. Once Pacific Encounter came within range of the sailing yacht, the three sailors were brought onboard by the P&O crew members. After being assessed by the onboard medical team, they were found to be in good health.

P&O Cruises Australia said the following in a statement: “P&O Cruises Australia will always go to the aid of our maritime friends in distress, and we are pleased this was a successful rescue.”

Pacific Encounter, sistership to the recently revamped Pacific Adventure, has since resumed her cruise, visiting Noumea and Lifou, New Caledonia; and Vila, Vanuatu.

The 108,865 gross tons cruise ship will return to Brisbane, Australia, on May 10. Whether the sailors have remained onboard, or if they disembarked in Noumea to attempt to retrieve their vessel is unclear.

While distressing, the three days adrift at sea for the three rescued by Pacific Encounter, are relatively minor compared to some of the more harrowing stories out there.

It’s No Pleasure Cruise

Thousands of people pay thousands of dollars each year to spend months if not a whole year onboard a cruise ship. However, some people end up at sea for just as long, but not because they want to.

In 2012, Jose Salvador Alvarenga, a Salvadoran fisherman, survived 438 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. He set out from Mexico for a day of fishing, but a storm set him adrift for around 6,700 miles. He eventually made landfall in the Marshall Islands.

Poon Lim, a Chinese sailor, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest time as a castaway at sea alone. The British merchant ship he was serving on was hit by a German U-boat during World War II. He survived 133 days on a wooden raft in the South Atlantic, using rainwater, catching fish, and fighting off sharks.

However, there are more than enough stories about people who are not considered ‘professional’ sailors. In 1971, The Robertson family was adrift for 38 days in the Pacific after their yacht was sunk by killer whales. In 1982, Steven Callahan survived 76 days adrift on a life raft after his sailing boat sank.

Finally, Maurice and Maralyn Bailey, a British couple, spent 117 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean in a rubber life raft after their yacht was damaged by a whale.

Luckily, most cruise passengers will never experience the hardships of being adrift at sea because their cruise ship has an accident or sinks. Cruise ships are designed with multiple safety features and redundancies to ensure passenger safety.

This includes SOLAS regulations, or Safety of Life at Sea, stability measures, fire safety measures, life-saving equipment such as lifeboats and liferafts, and multiple emergency transponders that transmit the ship’s position in case of emergency. Of course, on the other hand, there are a vast amount of occurrences when cruise ships saved those adrift at sea.

Carnival Vista Experiences a Technical Issue While Docked in Puerto Rico

Passengers aboard Carnival Vista experienced an unforeseen interruption during their voyage as the ship faced mechanical issues while docked in Puerto Rico. The incident was highlighted by a passenger, who shared an update via social media.

We are currently on the Vista in Puerto Rico, and the ship broke down,” he posted, indicating that the vessel was temporarily immobilized due to technical problems.

The specifics of the mechanical issues have not been fully disclosed by Carnival Cruise Line, but the disruption caused Carnival Vista to overnight in Puerto Rico on its May 7 call as engineers worked on repairs.

Originally set to depart from San Juan at 5:30 p.m., the ship did not depart until about 7:30 a.m. on May 8. The unscheduled overnight has resulted in Carnival Cruise Line rearranging the itinerary of its 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruise.

The cruise line said in a statement to Cruise Hive“Carnival Vista’s engineers resolved a technical issue that caused a delayed departure from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship’s itinerary has been modified, changing the order in which it visits St. Thomas and St. Maarten on Wednesday and Thursday, to maximize guests’ experience.”

Carnival Vista is currently sailing directly to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands a day ahead of schedule. It will sail to Philipsburg, St. Maarten on May 8 before returning to Port Canaveral on May 12.

Details regarding shore excursions were not revealed, but traditionally, any changes or cancellations to excursions booked through Carnival Cruise Line are remediated by the cruise line and require no further effort from passengers. Guests who booked private excursions must contact providers to make changes and cancellations.

Propulsion Problems Growing on Vista-Class

Carnival Vista’s current journey began in Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, on May 4, 2024. Sailing first to Puerto Plata/Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic on May 6, the nearly 4,000-passenger, 133,500-gross-ton ship sailed into San Juan, as scheduled, on May 6. Passengers disembarked for what was intended to be a 7-hour call.

As passengers re-embarked, chatter began to erupt when Carnival Vista did not depart on time, with many sharing they would rather be at port dealing with technical issues than at sea.

Passengers received word from the captain during the evening that the ship was experiencing mechanical issues and that the crew was working on repairs. Further updates shared on social media reported the issues to be related to propulsion.

This is not the first time a Carnival Vista-Class ship has experienced propulsion issues. Carnival Vista, Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Horizon have each experienced propulsion system issues and additional technical challenges. Each event has also resulted in itinerary changes, as well as cruise cancellations.

Carnival Vista’s propulsion problems were first noted in 2016 during a sailing from New York on November 16. The issue caused the ship to replace a Grand Turk call in Turks and Caicos with one in Nassau, Bahamas. In addition, three cruises were canceled in June 2019, and the ship was put into unscheduled dry dock for repairs of the system.

It wasn’t long before propulsion problems returned, with more itinerary changes enforced due to problems in May 2022.

Vista-Class ships from Carnival use Azipod Drive propulsion systems located outside of the vessel. This means, when it requires repair or maintenance, it cannot be accessed via the engine room and instead requires more complex repairs.

Despite the setbacks, Azipods are considered the best for fuel efficiency and maneuverability, which is why the cruise line continues to use it as its propulsion system.
