Cruise Line Cancels Three Ports Due to Poor Weather Conditions

It’s been rough sailing lately for Ambassador Cruise Line’s ship Ambition, as yet another itinerary is dramatically impacted by poor weather.

The ship is in the middle of a 9-night sailing from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Liverpool, by way of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The vessel set sail on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

Unfortunately, three of the upcoming ports of call must be cancelled due to poor weather in the sailing region. The cruise line has consulted with port authorities in all three locations to come to this difficult decision.

“Regrettably the strong weather conditions have meant that Ambition’s planned calls to Runavik on 11 September, Scrabster on 12th, and Portree on 13th have had to be cancelled,” Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed.

The severe weather includes wind gusts and swells that would make navigating to docks or anchoring for any tendering operations especially challenging and even dangerous.

Because of this, the ship is unable to continue further north for the final planned calls in Scotland.

“We have already started a voyage South to take shelter from the worst of [the storm],” the cruise line said. “We have been able to confirm an alternative port in Ireland and will call at Ringaskiddy on Saturday 13th September.”

Ringaskiddy is in County Cork, just across the mouth of the Lee River and Cork Harbour from Cobh Cruise Terminal. Ambition is now scheduled to dock in Ringaskiddy from 9 a.m. until late in the evening, though the departure time has not yet been finalized.

The ship should still make her planned visit to Belfast on Monday, September 15 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is also no change to the planned debarkation in Liverpool on Tuesday, September 16.

North Sea Weather Unpredictable

This is the second significant itinerary change for the 48,123-gross-ton Ambition in the past two weeks. On the ship’s previous cruise, an 11-night summertime Norwegian fjords adventure, Ambition was unable to call at Kristiansand on September 4 and instead remained overnight in Stavanger.

An earlier call in the sailing, a visit to Geiranger on Saturday, August 30, was also missed. That cancellation was due to a minor operational issue rather than weather, however.

Poor weather can impact cruises in all parts of the world at any time of year. Cruise lines monitor regional weather closely and coordinate with port authorities, local weather bureaus, and other resources to ensure they have the most accurate and updated information as possible.

While it is always the intention to keep original schedules, sometimes that just isn’t possible. Safety of the guests, ship, crew members, and port communities will always be the top priority.

Ambassador Cruise Line is doing its very best not only to keep everyone safe, but also to ensure full transparency for necessary changes.

Furthermore, the line is working to ensure guests still have an amazing onboard experience by arranging alternative ports whenever possible, which isn’t always an easy task.

Most guests are very understanding of such changes, agreeing that it is better to ensure safety rather than risk a potentially dangerous port. There will always be another cruise itinerary to enjoy!

Disney Adventure Delayed Three Months Just Days After Leaving Shipyard

  • Disney Adventure will be delayed nearly three months with her new maiden voyage now set for March 10, 2026 in order to provide the high standards Disney Cruise Line holds.
  • Guests on the original maiden voyage on December 15, 2025 have the option to transfer to the new inaugural sailing plus receive a 50% future cruise credit, or they may cancel for a full refund plus the credit.
  • Guests booked on the other now-cancelled sailings will receive full refunds plus the 50% future cruise credit.

The adventure will have to wait a bit longer for guests eager to set sail aboard Disney Adventure. Despite the ship’s very promising departure from the Meyer Werft shipyard on September 1, 2025, Disney Cruise Line has now announced the ship must be significantly delayed.

Rather than welcoming her first guests on December 15, 2025, the ship’s maiden voyage has been postponed for nearly three months, until March 10, 2026. All sailings between December 15 and March 10 are cancelled.

“This ship represents a bold new chapter for Disney Cruise Line, as we transform a partially built vessel into a fully reimagined Disney experience at sea,” the cruise line explained.

“As we bring this vision to life, we’ve encountered unexpected delays in the shipbuilding process. To ensure every detail meets the high standards you expect from Disney, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Disney Adventure’s maiden voyage.”

Disney Cruise Line does indeed deliver exceptional, immersive experiences far beyond a typical cruise vacation. If those standards aren’t yet available aboard Disney Adventure, it is better to delay the ship’s debut rather than risk unfavorable reactions from dissatisfied guests.

Guests booked on the ship’s first 22 sailings will undoubtedly be disappointed, but Disney Cruise Line is offering compensation for the inconvenience.

Those already booked on the ship’s original maiden voyage, a 3-night cruise, are being automatically transferred to the new inaugural sailing departing Singapore on March 10, 2026. They will also be given a 50% refund of their cruise fare.

If guests’ travel plans do not permit them to shift to the March departure, they can request a full refund instead. They will still receive the 50% bonus as a future cruise credit.

The future cruise must be booked by March 31, 2026, and the replacement sailing must depart no later than March 31, 2027.

The shift to the new maiden voyage only applies to guests booked on Disney Adventure‘s original inaugural cruise.

Guests booked on any of the other now-cancelled departures will automatically receive full refunds. They are also getting 50% of their cruise fare paid as a future cruise credit discount on another Disney Cruise Line sailing.

The replacement sailing does not need to be aboard Disney Adventure, though blackout dates and other terms and conditions apply for the use of the future cruise credit.

The 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure will be homeported year-round from Singapore, offering 3- and 4-night sailings to as many as 6,000 guests.

Why the Unexpected Delay?

Disney Adventure has been a long time coming, considering the ship’s first steel was cut as Global Dream in March 2018.

The pandemic shutdown and bankruptcy of parent company Genting Hong Kong fully halted construction. Eventually, the partially-completed hull was sold to Disney Cruise Line in November 2022.

It isn’t an easy process to fully re-design a ship already under construction to match the very exacting level of detail that is a signature feature of Disney cruise ships.

Now that Disney Adventure has completed her first set of sea trials, the rest of the finishing work must be scheduled. This includes both interior and exterior work, such as decking, design details, artwork installation, and more.

Disney Cruise Line has not indicated how well the ship performed during her sea trials. It is possible that some mechanical or engineering adjustments may also be necessary.

This is not unusual for brand-new ships, particularly new classes or special circumstances, such as how much Disney Adventure has been reimagined.

Hopefully, this delay will be the only adjustment for the ship’s inaugural season, and in March 2026, she will be ready to offer guests spectacular experiences for every oceangoing adventure.

Carnival Corrects Website Error for New Zero-Proof Drink Package

  • In the website description for the new CHEERS! Zero-Proof Drink package in Australia, Carnival incorrectly stated that specialty coffees and teas are included for Australian cruises.
  • Carnival has notified guests who booked the package of the mistake and sent directions on how to get refunds if this is unsatisfactory.
  • Specialty coffees and teas must be purchased a la carte or are included in the original CHEERS! Drink package.

Carnival Cruise Line may have been too eager to allow guests to start booking the new Zero-Proof drink package, and some guests may have been too eager to do just that.

When the brand new CHEERS! Zero-Proof Drink Package went live on Carnival’s website on September 5, 2025, the description incorrectly stated that premium coffees and teas were included in the package for Australian cruisers.

While a variety of non-alcoholic beverages are included in this drink package, these specialty beverages definitely are not for Carnival sailings in Australia.

“You were part of a small group of guests who booked the package shortly after it went live on our website on Friday, 5 September,” Carnival wrote to early bookers.

“Unfortunately, for a brief period, the website contained an error, incorrectly listing premium coffee and teas as part of the package and the website has been updated accordingly.”

Adding to the confusion for some, premium coffees and teas are included in the new alcohol-free package for Carnival cruises outside of Australia and are still listed in the description on the website when you access it from the US.

If this information makes the new package undesirable, guests can refund their drink package, which currently runs at $29.99 per person, per day.

“We’re sorry about our error. If you decide you no longer want the CHEERS! Zero Proof non-alcoholic beverage package, you can get a refund for the package via the Cruise Manager tab on the website,” Carnival continued.

Typically, Carnival drink packages can be cancelled and refunded until 10 p.m. EST on the night before embarkation day.

Where to Find Specialty Coffees & Teas Onboard

Trust me, I understand how important it is to satisfy the need for caffeine.

Just because the specialty coffees and teas aren’t included in the Zero-Proof drink package in Australia doesn’t mean that these beverages can’t be found onboard.

On all Carnival cruise ships, regardless of sailing region, premium coffees and teas refer to specialty espresso-based drinks, gourmet teas, and other cafe-style beverages, akin to what you would likely find at your local coffee shop at home.

These can be purchased a la carte from the coffee bars onboard, such as the popular JavaBlue Café.

Additionally, Carnival has added the ability to order coffees to go from the Hub App at designated bars on select ships in an attempt to shorten the lines at hot spots like the aforementioned JavaBlue Café.

In addition to purchasing drinks a la carte, coffee and specialty teas are included in the original CHEERS! Drink Package, which starts at $69.95 per person, per day (which is just over double the cost of the new Zero-Proof package).

But for guests on a budget, the free coffee and tea that is provided 24/7 at the Lido Deck Marketplace Buffet and beverage stations might be good enough as a complement to the Zero-Proof drink package.

Standard coffees and teas are also complimentary in the main dining rooms.

Through the Zero-Proof package, guests can still save on sodas, juices, bottled waters, frozen drinks, smoothies, milkshakes, bottled protein shakes, and energy drinks.

Non-alcoholic versions of beer, sparkling wine, and cocktails are also included – and I speak from experience when I say that Carnival crew members make a mean virgin strawberry daiquiri.

Guest Claims There Isn’t Enough to Do on Carnival Ships in Port

  • One Carnival guest has complained to John Heald that there wasn’t enough to do while Mardi Gras was in port on a recent sailing.
  • Heald followed up on the complaint by asking if guests get off the ship in ports of call, with a resounding positive response.
  • It’s not unusual for fewer activities to be offered while a ship is in port, but there is always a schedule of games, trivia, and more.

One of the great things about a cruise vacation is that you can do as much or as little onboard the ship as you like. Or can you?

One Carnival Cruise Line guest has reached out to John Heald, the line’s brand ambassador, with the complaint that there just isn’t enough to do on certain days, even on one of the largest ships in the fleet.

“Question and complaint. We was [sic] on Carnival Mardi Gras last week. Why are there are never enough activities on the boat when the ship is at one of the islands?” the guest asked.

“At least half the ship stayed on board all three of the islands. Boredom!! There needs to be more shows, movies, comedy shows and trivia and competitions.”

Mardi Gras is the first of Carnival’s Excel-class ships. Homeported from Port Canaveral, she offers primarily 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

If by “last week” the guest means the ship’s August 30, 2025 departure, that itinerary was actually an 8-night sailing that visited four ports: St. Thomas, San Juan, Amber Cove, and Celebration Key.

On a typical 7-night Western Caribbean sailing, however, the ship does indeed visit just three ports: Isla Tropicale, Cozumel, and Celebration Key.

But exact dates and numbers of ports aside, the guest’s claims are interesting. It is true that while a cruise ship is in port, there are generally fewer activities on the daily schedule, as many guests will be off the ship enjoying time ashore.

Port days are also when crew members get a few hours’ break and have a chance to get away from the ship for a bit themselves. This means there would be fewer crew members available to host different “shows, movies, comedy shows and trivia and competitions.”

Heald does not directly disagree with the guest, but he will pass on their concerns to the staff onboard as well as the appropriate departments fleetwide.

“Thank you so much, I will definitely be sharing this with my colleagues,” he noted. “I’m sure they do a wonderful job already providing extra entertainment for those who remain on the ship.”

He went on to ask his followers whether or not they get off the ship in port, just to gauge if it is true that “at least half the ship” stays onboard.

Most of the more than 2,700 responses did seem to indicate that either they would get off the ship in every port of call, or they would perhaps skip a particular port, but certainly not all of them.

One commenter did offer more specific insight to the original poster’s comments.

“My friend was on that sailing last week. She said it literally was storming & raining at every port hence why no one got off the ship last week,” they explained. “Context is key.”

Other guests noted that those who are lucky enough to sail more often may prefer to stay onboard in some ports just because they’ve been there more frequently (Nassau comes to mind here).

Mobility concerns, illness, or just the desire to stay onboard to enjoy a quieter-than-normal ship are other reasons many guests might not get off the ship in a port.

Is There Not Enough to Do Onboard?

I have personally sailed on Mardi Gras as well as her Excel sister ship, Carnival Celebration. I can firmly say there certainly is plenty to do onboard, even while in port.

True, I don’t like every activity, and there might be periods when nothing on the schedule appeals to me. Those are great times to enjoy the pools, visit the gym, read a book, grab an ice cream (no Sunscreen flavor for me, thanks), play mini golf, or even have a nice stroll around the ship.

I can honestly say I haven’t been “bored” at any time, even if some daily schedules are less appealing than others.

Carnival always offers a range of daily activities, even on port days. The fun begins with puzzles at the cafe or a morning trivia, followed by crafts, Lido deck games, dance lessons, towel-folding demonstrations, sports competitions, and more.

Of course, once the port visit has ended, the schedule fills up even more as the retail shops and casinos open and the evening’s production shows or comedy performances begin.

MSC Mega-Ship Suffers Hours-Long Delay Due to Engine Issue

  • MSC World Europa was delayed in Valletta, Malta, for around six hours due to a power outage that impacted the ship’s engines. 
  • The World-class ship finally set sail around midnight, and is cruising at normal speeds. 
  • It’s unclear if this technical issue is related to the power outage that temporarily left the ship stranded off the coast of Ponza, Italy, at the end of August. 

Just a couple of weeks after MSC World Europa was left adrift by an electrical problem that cut propulsion, the mega-ship has once again suffered a serious engine failure.

The 2022-launched vessel, which was not known to have propulsion or power issues before August, was delayed in Malta, Valletta, for hours on September 10, 2025.

Cruise tracking data indicates that the 6,762-guest vessel was supposed to depart from Malta at 5 p.m. local time, but she didn’t actually set sail until closer to midnight – more than six hours later than initially planned.

Although MSC Cruises has not commented publicly on these events, current passengers have reported that the cause behind the extended delay was due to power issues that were impacting the engine.

“Yes it’s true! We are on it today September 10, 2025 and the power went off which means no water no toilet,” a third passenger confirmed.

“Sure enough the captain came on a little while after that and said they were experiencing a technical problem and we would be delayed leaving the port today,” they continued.

Another guest simply replied “serious engine failure” to a cruise fan who asked what was going on after realizing the ship was still in port.

It’s unclear at this time if the delay (or the need for repairs) will lead to itinerary changes.

The World-class ship is currently operating several 7-night Mediterranean cruises simultaneously, and is next due in Barcelona, Spain, on the morning of September 12.

She is at least seaworthy, as the 215,863-gross ton vessel is currently sailing at normal speeds of 20 knots per hour in the direction of Barcelona.

Per current passengers, the power is currently on (toilets and lights do work!), and it’s business as usual onboard.

Is the Problem Solved?

Thus far, MSC Cruises has not clarified what actually went wrong onboard MSC World Europa.

However, the cruise line would not allow the young vessel to continue sailing if it was not safe to do so.

It would be smarter to remain in port until repairs are complete than to head out to sea with unreliable power and engine functionality.

But given recent events, some guests are concerned that bigger issues are at play that have not been fully resolved.

“This is a bit of a worry. I am going in late October. Hope this [is] not [an] ongoing problem,” one guest reacted to the news.

“Ohhh.You’re much better than us. We were stuck in the middle of the sea. I think this ship needs to be repaired properly,” another recent guest wrote.

The passenger who was stuck at sea would have been onboard on Monday, August 25, 2025, when a power outage left the cruise ship floating aimlessly near Ponza, Italy.

The Italian Coast Guard had to deploy tugboats, patrol vessels, and a helicopter to monitor and assist the stranded vessel, which had to rely on backup generators.

More recently, current passengers have also noticed signs of possible electrical trouble over the past few days.

“OMG this is the second time in a few days,” one cruiser exclaimed.

“We just disembarked this morning and while onboard, we noticed the lights were dimming and then going back to normal on 2 separate occasions for sure,” another said.

It’s unclear if these reported issues are all symptoms of a bigger problem, or if these are simply unusual coincidences.

Three Carnival Sailings Run Into Parking Problems

  • Upcoming sailings for Carnival Radiance and Carnival Firenze have parking restrictions and limited availability at Long Beach.
  • Very few offsite spaces are available and they are subject to a variety of restrictions, including no oversized vehicles or back-to-back cruise parking.
  • With cruise capacity at Long Beach continuing to increase, these parking difficulties may also increase for future sailings.

Parking problems are nothing new at the Port of Long Beach, but now, three upcoming cruises will all experience a shortage of available spaces for eager guests.

The impacted sailings are the September 15 and September 19 sailings of Carnival Radiance, a 4-night and 3-night Baja Mexico sailing, respectively.

The September 18 departure of Carnival Firenze has the same restriction. That cruise is a 5-night Mexican Riviera itinerary.

Booked guests have all received the same notification alerting them – very strongly! – to the parking shortage.

“The parking facility at the cruise terminal has very limited capacity,” the email explained. “Please make plans to use alternate transportation that does not require parking.”

There is hope for guests who do drive to the port, however.

“We have secured a few extra spaces at an offsite facility,” the notification said.

Those few extra spaces do come with more than a few restrictions, however. Vehicles higher than 6 feet, 6 inches cannot be accommodated, nor can any vehicles that might use more than one parking space, such as RVs or trailers.

Furthermore, guests on back-to-back cruises are also prohibited from the offsite facility, which can only accommodate vehicles for one voyage.

If guests need accessible parking, those even more limited spaces are first-come, first-served and subject to availability.

Guests who can take advantage of the extremely limited parking will need to drop off their luggage and traveling party at the cruise terminal in order to pick up directions and an entry card for the offsite facility. The guests’ boarding pass will be checked once they reach the parking area.

The parking site is $23 per day, including both embarkation and debarkation days. Payment is required in advance, and only card payments are accepted.

Complimentary shuttles will be available to take guests to and from the cruise terminal. The last shuttle will leave the parking facility 30 minutes before the ship’s final boarding time, which guests can find on their boarding passes.

Once again, Carnival is strongly urging guests to find alternative ways to get to the Long Beach cruise terminal.

“To improve your embarkation experience and avoid the hassle of parking at an offsite location, we highly recommend taking a ride share or getting dropped off for your cruise,” the notification concludes.

Will the Parking Situation at Long Beach Improve?

This is not the first time parking has been limited at the Port of Long Beach, but the urgency of the language in Carnival’s notification letters appears to be getting stronger.

Similar notifications go back at least to late 2022, when Carnival Miracle faced parking shortages for multiple cruises.

In the meantime, cruise popularity at Long Beach has only increased, with more (and larger!) ships sailing from the southern California homeport.

Carnival Miracle, for comparison, has a double occupancy capacity of 2,124. The ships impacted today, Carnival Radiance and Carnival Firenze, have capacities of 2,984 and 4,126, respectively.

Carnival Firenze is scheduled to redeploy to Miami in early 2027, but a replacement (if any) has not yet been announced.

If Carnival Cruise Line were to homeport an even larger ship from Long Beach, such as one of the Excel-class ships, the parking problem could become even more critical.

The cruise line has not yet released complete deployment plans for Long Beach for 2028, though such announcements should be forthcoming over the next few weeks.

Holland America Details 2027 Itineraries to Canada and New England

Key Aspects:

  • Holland America Line will again deploy two ships, Volendam and Zuiderdam, on Canada/New England itineraries from May to October in 2027.
  • A new maritime-focused cruise offers the chance to explore up to 10 iconic lighthouses along Volendam’s 9-day route from Montreal to New York.
  • Other sailings provide a focus on French Canadian culture and natural resources, including several national parks.

Holland America Line is staying the course in Canada/New England with its traditional two-ship deployment to the region in 2027, however, a new itinerary focused on lighthouses will be featured.

The cruise line will again offer a range of voyages onboard Volendam and Zuiderdam, sailing between New York and Montreal, and Boston and Quebec.

The line has offered cruises on these two ships to Eastern Canada for the last several years, giving guests the chance to experience the culture of French Canada along with quaint New England ports.

A new itinerary for 2027, the 9-day “Lighthouses & Harbors of Canada and New England,” will be offered on Volendam, sailing on October 2, 2027 from Montreal to New York. The departure date is timed to take full advantage of fall foliage colors, and guests will have opportunities to explore 10 lighthouses.

Shore excursions, 22 in all, will bring guests to iconic lighthouses such as Portland Head Light, in Portland, Maine, and Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, in Nova Scotia.

Other port calls on the itinerary are tiny Bar Harbor, Maine, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island — where the classic “Anne of Green Gables” was based, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The 10-day “Canada & New England Circle: New France and Montreal” cruise sails roundtrip from Montreal and calls at several “New France” destinations, such as Québec City; Saguenay, Québec; Prince Edward Island; St. Pierre; and St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The 11-day “Canada & New England Circle: Maritimes and New France” cruise offers opportunities to explore national parks such as Jacques-Cartier National Park, in Québec City, Gros Morne National Park, in Newfoundland, and the Saguenay Fjord National Park. 

Other port calls on the voyage feature St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Halifax, and Baie-Comeau, in Québec Province.

Both Ships to Sail Weekly Voyages to Montreal, Quebec City

While longer cruises are offered, 7-day voyages are the foundation of the two ships’ deployments. Volendam will operate four unique 7-day itineraries between Boston and Montréal, and roundtrip from Boston

All feature visits to Québec City, and Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia, with some itineraries also calling at Prince Edward Island, Eastport and Portland, Maine, and St. John.

Zuiderdam will sail between Québec City and Boston, and roundtrip from Boston, offering three unique 7-day itineraries, some of which will feature late-night departures from Prince Edward Island, Portland, and Québec City.

Local cuisine will play a key role in these voyages, as regional seafood and traditional favorites are offered to guests. They include, of course, Maine lobster, Prince Edward Island mussels, and even Boston baked beans and Boston cream pie.

The cruise line’s Have It All premium package is offered on all of the 2027 Canada/New England voyages. The early booking bonus is time-limited and covers shore excursions, specialty dining, a Signature Beverage Package, Wi-Fi access, and crew gratuities.

Carnival Conquest the Latest Ship to Lose Loyalty Perks

It’s not uncommon for Carnival Cruise Line to be unable to accommodate high-level loyalty perks on very popular sailings. Now it’s time for guests onboard one of the line’s exclusive SEA sailings to miss out on certain benefits.

The impacted cruise is Carnival Conquest‘s September 12, 2025 departure. The 9-night Eastern Caribbean cruise is one of the new adults-only cruises offering more casino benefits and onboard fun targeted toward adults rather than families.

“Due to the high number of Diamond and Platinum guests joining us on this voyage, we will not be able to provide the following benefits,” the notification explained.

The list of no-longer-possible benefits are priority embarkation and debarkation both in Miami and at ports of call, the early stateroom access to drop off luggage, and priority luggage delivery.

If guests have questions or concerns, and the priority line and phone service from Guest Services will also not be available.

Furthermore, Diamond-level guests will not be guaranteed their main dining room seating requests for dinner.

“These operational changes are consistent with other voyages where we have a very large number of Diamond and Platinum guests,” the cruise line confirmed.

This is not the first of the SEA cruises to implement these restrictions. Carnival Conquest‘s first adults-only sailing, which departed on August 22, 2025, also removed these same high-level benefits.

Carnival Cruise Line often has to remove these benefits from other very popular cruises, such as longer Carnival Journeys itineraries and repositioning cruises.

If fact, the day after Carnival Conquest will set sail on this reduced-benefit SEA cruise, Mardi Gras will begin her transatlantic cruise from Port Canaveral to Barcelona without the loyalty benefits.

These more unique itineraries are popular with frequent cruisers who have more time in their schedule and more funds in their travel budget.

The problem, however, is because so many guests have earned these coveted benefits, Carnival Cruise Line can’t deliver on the exclusivity. After all, if hundreds of people have a “priority” benefit and the line is longer because of it, how much of a “priority” is it really?

Loyalty Program Overhaul

In recent years, Carnival’s Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) loyalty program has grown top-heavy with guests who have earned Platinum and Diamond status. This is one critical reason why the program must be overhauled.

“The lifetime status benefits just cannot be delivered in the right way,” Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line president, stated in response to the new program. “Lifetime status is not feasible given the number of people and the growth in the highest tiers.”

Carnival Cruise Line was founded in 1972. By the end of 2025, the cruise line will reach 110 million guests. All of them are in the VIFP program, as membership is automatic after a single sailing.

Just since 2012, 65 million guests have sailed with Carnival. This means that of everyone who has ever set sail aboard a Fun Ship, 59% of them have sailed in the past 13 years, which is just 25% of the line’s operational history.

This exponential growth has had a profound impact on the VIFP loyalty program. While Carnival has not revealed exact numbers of guests at different program tiers, it’s not hard to figure out that when VIFP points are lifelong, the top numbers will continue to grow.

Since the announcement of the new Carnival Rewards program in mid-June, hundreds of guests have reached out to Carnival Cruise Line asking if upper level tiers could be “grandfathered” in or have their status preserved.

Doing so, however, would simply create the exact same problem no matter how the program might be revamped.

I’m a high-level VIFP member myself, and certainly not thrilled with the program shakeup or all the changes.

Nevertheless, the only way to truly preserve elite status is to keep it elite, which means it won’t be accessible to everyone or there may come a time when Carnival is unable to offer these perks on any sailing.

Boy’s Disney Cruise Wi-Fi Meltdown Goes Viral

When 10-year-old Luca from Ohio learned there’d be no WiFi on his family’s recent Disney Magic voyage with Disney Cruise Line, his reaction was probably not dissimilar to most children (as well as adults!).

A TikTok clip posted by his mom, Brittney Mettke Powers, shows stepdad Gerard Powers gently consoling the child.

“Enjoy this time on the cruise, OK?” he says. “You’ll get WiFi, but it’s gonna hurt not having it for a while, but it’ll get better,” Gerard says.

“Each day, it’ll get better, and it’ll be easier and easier to live without WiFi,” he continued, with Luca giving a chuckling “okay” in response.

Brittney shared the video of her son’s “full-blown WiFi/Roblox detox” and added, “Sorry bud, guess you’ll just have to suffer through this Disney cruise instead.”

The simple post went viral, with many weighing in on Luca’s dopamine crash.

“This sounds silly, but if it’s hard for an adult with coping skills to leave their phone at home, it’s definitely hard for kiddos,” responded one viewer.

Another laughed and reminded Luca that he’s on a ship entirely geared toward him having fun. However, it is important to note that Luca is autistic.

While the majority of the comments raised concerns about too much screen time for kids, those who know and love Disney Cruise Line wished they could be on the voyage. “I definitely would be okay without [WiFi] for a week,” said one.

Even hard-hitting media sites like Newsweek picked up the clip, with Brittney admitting this was the family’s first cruise and that they had warned their four children that WiFi would be sporadic on their vacation.

At Sea Without WiFi

While the lighthearted post sparked a debate, Luca wasn’t entirely without WiFi on his vacation. The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic, which currently sails from Port Canaveral, and all Disney Cruise Line vessels offer complimentary WiFi access on its Navigator app.

Although this app only allows messaging between passengers and access to schedules and menus, the cruise line also sells tiered packages, so passengers don’t have to go through withdrawal.

The Connect@Sea is data-based and accessible via the Navigator app, as well. Guests can select basic Internet package from megabyte usage or pay-as-you-go. These provide passengers with ways to surf the web; access social media, texts, and e-mail; and make video calls.

Premium plans can also bump guests up with streaming capabilities for access to platforms like Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, and music services.

These packages allow up to four devices simultaneously, though if that limit is exceeded, one device may get dropped.

Yet even with a package, onboard WiFi on any cruise line isn’t always as smooth as at home. Satellite-based systems like Starlink are making cruise WiFi better and faster, although passengers may see speeds dip notably during the evenings when excursions are over and usage spikes.

In fact, he and his siblings are already asking when they can go on another cruise.
