Carnival Legend is doing things a little differently for settling the Sail & Sign accounts of its current passengers.

Instead of settling the onboard accounts at the end of the current 10-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, as is the norm, the cruise line has decided to resolve balances early and on disembarkation day.

This means that the payment methods guests have linked to their reservations will be charged twice to pay their outstanding balances.

“We are writing to let you know that we will be settling onboard credit card charges in two segments for this voyage,” Carnival notified the up to 2,134 guests onboard.

Guests can expect to see their cards charged for the first time on February 23, 2026, and once again when the Spirit-class ship returns to its homeport of Galveston, Texas, for debarkation on February 26.

How Settling Accounts Normally Works

During a typical sailing, Carnival guests settle their accounts once at the end of their voyage.

On the final night of the sailing or on the morning of disembarkation, a printed statement detailing all purchases made onboard using Sail & Sign accounts should be delivered to guest staterooms.

The final folios can also be accessed at Sail & Sign kiosks, on the HUB App, or by visiting guest services.

If guests agree with their final statement, there is no action that needs to be taken. Carnival will simply charge the credit card on file and guests can go on their way.

If something on your final bill is wrong, it’s important to speak to guest services prior to disembarking. If a passenger is owed a refund, it will be sent via check to the address on file within one week of the sailing’s conclusion.

What if Guests Disagree With Charges?

If passengers believe that they have been billed incorrectly, they will want to head to guest services to discuss their accounts as soon as possible. Once Carnival settles their bill, it can no longer be adjusted.

“Once the first settlement has been processed, we will not be able to add or remove persons from accounts or change payments on the settled account,” the cruise line advised.

“For the second portion, if needed, you will be able to change payment methods only,” the letter continued.

Cruise Hive has confirmed that guests can switch the credit card associated with their Sail & Sign accounts mid-voyage, but any holds that were on the previous card will remain in place for potentially several days after the sailing concludes.

Typically, the cruise line will automatically put an up to $200 bank hold in place on embarkation day for incidentals and to ensure the card is valid during the sailing.

Why Make the Change?

Carnival Cruise Line has not confirmed why they are settling accounts twice for this specific sailing, or if this will be a permanent change going forward.

Some passengers theorized that the family-friendly cruise line might be testing a new process to try to avoid long lines of guests with account questions at the guest services desk on the night before and morning of debarkation.

“Maybe trying to curb the massive line the night before debarkation of people removing gratuities,” one cruise fan theorized.

Others thought it might be related to doing a mid-voyage credit check to ensure guests’ payment methods could still cover their growing onboard balances.

“My guess is they are having many declined charges due to insufficient funds. So they are breaking the payments up into segments so they can investigate while you’re still on the ship,” another cruiser guessed.

It’s also possible that the billing process has had to adjust in the wake of widespread IT issues impacting various onboard systems, which Cruise Hive reported on earlier in February.

But ultimately, guests are spending the same amount of money whether their accounts are settled once or twice. With this in mind, it may not matter too much if they pay all at once or in two installments.

Carnival Cruise Line tries to accommodate all types of requests for celebrations and a little “something special” to help make guests’ cruise vacations even more memorable.

An inadvertent error with a recent request, however, now means there will be no more third-party gifts.

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, handles such requests. Hundreds of times each week, guests reach out to him about special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, beating cancer, job promotions, graduations, and much more.

Heald always tries to offer something to celebrate the request. It might be a plate of cookies, a prize medallion, a bottle of champagne, or even (albeit rarely) the coveted ship-on-a-stick.

One recent request, however, went badly wrong. Heald discussed the incident in a video on his Facebook page, sharing his chagrin with his more than 665,000 followers.

“One of the fun parts of my job is to be able to help people celebrate. People write to me and say it’s my birthday, it’s an anniversary or a honeymoon or whatever, divorce, I’m celebrating and I always do my best to send a little something,” he explained.

He noted that he does have a budget on every ship and can’t therefore send gifts to large parties or accommodate every request. He does try to do as much as he can, however, especially in exceptional circumstances.

The recent incident involved a frequent Carnival guest’s best friends, who were celebrating retirement from the police force. To be clear, the individual making the request was not sailing themselves, but wanted to surprise their friend.

“I sent a bottle of champagne and a medallion,” Heald confirmed.

After making the arrangements for the delivery, Heald then had a trip to the “mothership” in Miami and was busy with corporate meetings, ship visits, and meeting guests in person for several days. Upon returning home and back to guest communications, he found a very angry email.

“The person who had received the gift is accusing me of lots of things, very angry, calling me all sorts of names, because I sent a bottle of champagne to his two grandchildren,” Heald said.

How Did This Happen?

Whoops! It turns out, the individual making the gift request gave Heald the wrong stateroom number and the bottle of champagne and medallion went to the children’s stateroom instead of the now-retired police officer.

“I had sent a bottle of champagne to two children,” Heald said. “They had no idea who I was, they just went to Guest Services.”

Heald quickly apologized to the guest and noted that he completely understood why they were so upset. He even admitted that if this happened to his daughter, he’d be equally angry.

The result is that there will be no more third-party gifts sent to Carnival guests. Heald will continue to send gifts whenever possible to guests who are actually sailing, but will no longer accommodate requests to surprise someone else.

“I’m not going to put myself or my colleague Jacinta into that particular nest of vipers,” he said.

That new policy is holding firm, as both Heald and Jacinta are now refusing third-party gift requests.

“We are very happy and glad to be able to send something to people actually cruising on the ship but third-party requests are not something that we are permitted to do anymore,” he responded to a more recent request. “Thank you for your understanding.”
