Not only is Carnival Cruise Line one of the largest and most popular cruise lines in the world, but also one of the easiest to contact with a wide variety of questions, comments, and requests thanks to its very visible and personable “brand ambassador” John Heald.

Now, however, changes in social media are making it more challenging to contact Heald about all things Carnival.

Facebook Changes Contact Options

As one of the most popular figures in the cruising industry, thanks to his amiable (and occasionally quirky) character, extensive cruise experience, and personal interactions with guests, John Heald has a strong social media presence, including on his popular Facebook page.

To date, more than 466,000 people “follow” Heald’s Facebook page, which he uses on nearly a daily basis to interact with past guests, future cruisers, and everyone in between.

A change in Facebook’s operations, however, have now made that interaction more difficult, and “community posts” are no longer permitted directly on Heald’s page. This means other Facebook users cannot make a direct post on the page, to which Heald or his assistant, Jacinta, would generally respond.

Heald, however, has quickly instituted a workaround for communicating with guests by pinning a daily featured “Questions, Reviews, Comments” post to the top of his page. As other users can still comment on his posts, that will provide a single, designated location for such questions.

“One of the reasons this page is so popular is not because of me, but because of all of you and your ability to share your thoughts, your reviews, your price for the cruise, your request for future cruises, and any comments that you have and I will not let that foundation be disturbed,” Heald explained.

Fast Popularity

Within just one hour after posting the first daily featured question spot, more than 450 comments have already been made, showing exactly the broad range of issues Heald helps cruisers with, including:

• Glowing recommendations and thanks to crew members on recent cruises.
• Requests to help arrange group meeting places onboard for specific sailings.
• Feedback on new casino policies or other onboard procedures.
• Questions about the types of soda beverages available onboard.
• Concerns about the accessibility of gangways at different ports of call.
• Requests for dining room arrangements for groups or specific tables.
• Questions about future homeport options or upcoming booking windows.

While Heald interacts with guests via social media, it is important to note that because of his immense popularity, he is not always able to personally respond to every question or request.

If travelers have urgent questions about an upcoming cruise, it is best to contact the cruise line directly via customer service, or else to reach out to an experienced travel agent for updated information.

Guests onboard a Carnival ship can also reach out to the Guest Services team or speak with crew members onboard about questions.

The search is currently ongoing for a passenger overboard from Carnival Magic. The 35-year-old man reportedly went over the railing of his balcony stateroom at approximately 4:10 a.m. on Monday morning, May 29, 2023, and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) is continuing search operations at this time.

Man Overboard From Carnival Magic

Search efforts are continuing for a 35-year-old male passenger overboard from Carnival Magic. The man was reported overboard by his traveling companion late Monday afternoon, and the cruise ship reviewed security footage to confirm that he had fallen overboard.

“An initial review of closed circuit security footage confirms that he leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water at approximately 4:10 am early Monday morning,” read a statement from Carnival Cruise Line.

The incident occurred while the Dream-class ship was returning from a 5-night cruise to The Bahamas, having called at Nassau and Freeport. Monday was a day at sea while the ship was en route back to Norfolk, Virginia. At the time, Carnival Magic was approximately 186 miles (300 kilometers) east of Jacksonville, Florida.

No information is available about why the man was not reported missing earlier in the day, or about any possible activity that could have lead to the overboard situation.

The USCG was contacted and immediately began search operations in an effort to locate the missing man, while simultaneously crew members onboard the ship activated overboard procedures to account for passengers and attempt to see if the man was still aboard the vessel.

Guests onboard report that the guest’s name – which has not been released to safeguard the individual’s privacy, as well as the privacy of his family members and traveling party – was called several times over the ship’s public address system, which is often a first step to locate a missing person.

USCG air and water assets are both in use conducting the search.

Carnival Magic Back in Port

Carnival Magic was released from search operations and has returned to Norfolk on schedule, and is ready to begin its next sailing on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. That next cruise is also a 5-night sailing to The Bahamas, identical to the previous itinerary with calls scheduled for Nassau and Freeport.

Carnival Cruise Line is offering care team support to the man’s family and traveling party during this difficult time.

The much-anticipated Carnival Venezia has set sail on her inaugural itinerary from Barcelona to New York, the very first sailing of the new, reimagined ship that brings a unique Venetian vibe to Carnival Cruise Line.

The 15-night cruise will visit multiple ports of call en route to New York, and will remain homeported from the Big Apple through early December 2024.

Carnival Venezia Welcomes Guests for the First Time

Costa Venezia was first announced to be joining the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in June 2022 as part of the “Costa by Carnival” initiative, and now, nearly a year later, the renovated and updated ship has finally set sail with a whole new Italian spin on Fun Ship cruises.

The inaugural sailing left Barcelona, Spain on Monday, May 29, 2023, and will call on Malaga, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Ponta Delgada, and Halifax before arriving in New York on Tuesday, June 13.

Along for the first part of the sailing are special guests in the cruise line’s leadership, Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, as well as Emeril Lagasse, the cruise line’s Chief Culinary Officer, to give guests very special greetings and fun activities to begin the momentous voyage.

“We wanted to welcome the ship with ‘BAM’ by having Emeril join me on board as we interact with guests and show off this beautiful ship,” said Duffy.

The VIP pair will host exclusive events on the vessel, including the very first Sail Away Party, the Captain’s Venetian Toast, and a private cooking demonstration by Lagasse on Tuesday, May 30. Reservations for the cooking demo will go to Carnival’s longtime charity partner, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Amazing Upgrades to Experience

Before welcoming guests, Carnival Venezia has undergone an extensive wet and dry dock refit to update, refresh, and renovate the vessel. Not only did this include general maintenance and housekeeping work, as is common with all dry dock updates, but more intensive updating was done to add familiar Carnival style to the ship.

The former Costa Cruises ship arrived in Cadiz, Spain for the refit near the end of March, and has spent two months undergoing extensive updating.

Changes to the Vista-class ship include the addition of popular Carnival favorites Guy’s Burger Joint, the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, and Bonsai Sushi & Teppanyaki to the dining venue lineup, as well as introducing Camp Ocean and Club O2 for younger cruisers.

The ship has not lost its characteristic Italian flair, however, with special touches throughout to maintain the unique Venetian ambiance onboard.

Not only does the ship retain amazing Italian décor including a full-size gondola, but extra attention has been paid to the Italian influence in unique ways, such as adding bocce ball and foosball to the SportSquare and creating a “Venetian Mask Night” party for guests to enjoy, with custom-designed Venetian-style masks available for purchase onboard.

Of special interest for the dining venues is the new “Il Viaggio” restaurant, a specialty dining option featuring elevated Italian fare evoking a culinary journey through Italy.

“Highlighting the various Italian regions renowned for certain specialties will invite our guests to enjoy an immersive exploration of flavors – a meal that’s truly unique, delicious and offers an enriching experience as well,” said Lagasse. “Guests will find their favorite Italian staples here, and they’ll also have the chance to try authentic dishes and drinks that might just become new favorites.”

The most visible update to the new ship is, of course, the new blue-and-gold hull livery. The colors reflect the ship’s Costa Cruises origins, while the graceful lines match the new red-white-and-blue design being introduced across the Carnival Cruise Line fleet.

Once she reaches New York, Carnival Venezia will begin to offer a variety of itineraries and cruise lengths, ranging from 4-15 nights and including popular destinations such as Bermuda, The Bahamas, Canada, New England, and various Caribbean ports of call on both Southern Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean itineraries.

In December 2024, the new ship will reposition to Port Canaveral to bring Italian style to the Sunshine State, with Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean sailings available, as well as select dates for Panama Canal cruises.

Carnival Firenze Still to Come

The next Costa by Carnival ship due to join the fleet is Carnival Firenze, which at the moment is still sailing as Costa Firenze with Costa Cruises. The ship is currently sailing Northern European cruises, departing either from Kiel, Germany or Copenhagen, Denmark.

In January 2024, Costa Firenze is scheduled to end her service with Costa Cruises. Shortly thereafter, the ship will enter wet/dry dock for her own refurbishments to become Carnival Firenze, before deploying to Long Beach, California and sailing Baja and Mexican Riviera itineraries with her new Fun Ship vibes.

Carnival Sunshine has departed on her next sailing after a very stormy cruise and significant delays returning to Charleston because of strong winds and dangerous waves.

The ship did suffer some damage, but the next sailing has not been impacted and guests have been compensated for their very late embarkation.

Carnival Sunshine Significantly Delayed

Due to the non-tropical storm off the southeastern US that prevented the ship from entering the harbor at the Port of Charleston, Carnival Sunshine was delayed for nine hours with debarking guests at the end of a cruise and embarking passengers for the next sailing.

Embarking guests were kept apprised of the situation through text and email updates, and were finally able to begin boarding the ship at approximately 6:30 p.m. with the last guests onboard at about 10:30-11 p.m., and the ship set sail at near midnight.

Carnival Sunshine was returning from a 6-night roundtrip sailing to The Bahamas that visited Nassau, Bimini, and Half Moon Cay.

Poor weather and rough seas on the return trip were caused by the non-tropical storm system, with recorded wind gusts near Charleston Harbor from 30-36 knots (34-42 miles per hour / 55-67 kilometers per hour) at the time the cruise ship was waiting to enter.

Damage Reported

Guests onboard the ship prior to arriving back in Charleston reported a variety of damage to the vessel, from leaking ceilings to flooded hallways and staterooms with puddles on the carpeting.

In public areas of the ship, dishes, bottles, and glassware had fallen and broken, and displays and racks in the Fun Shops had overturned and spilled merchandise. With the ship rocking significantly due to heavy swells, seasickness bags were distributed.

The worst of the damage appears to have been to crew areas on lower decks, where more significant flooding was noted and walls and doorways were heavily damaged, even destroyed, especially in some crew recreational areas.

Some crew members were evacuated to higher decks during the worst of the weather and while minor injuries were reported, there are no significant injuries.

It should be noted that at no time were the ship’s safety systems compromised, and while the conclusion of the sailing was most definitely uncomfortable, guests and crew members were safe at all times.

Compensation for Next Cruise

Because the cruise was so heavily delayed for its next sailing – with guests not embarking until well into the evening and nighttime hours – every stateroom was given $100 (USD) of onboard credit, and a prorated credit for any WiFi or drink package purchases.

Due to the late embarkation, guests would have missed the afternoon lunch options, ship tours, and other embarkation day activities, as well as the first night’s lounge entertainment and other fun.

The ship is already en route on its next cruise, a 5-night Bahamas sailing that will call on Half Moon Cay, the cruise line’s private island in The Bahamas, on Monday and Nassau on Tuesday, before returning to Charleston on Thursday, June 1.

There are no delays or itinerary changes for the ship’s current sailing, and fortunately for those aboard, the weather appears much more pleasant as the non-tropical system has now dissipated.

Carnival Sunshine will remain homeported from Charleston through December 2024 offering primarily 4- and 5-night Bahamas sailings, as well as the occasional longer Eastern Caribbean cruise. In early 2025, the ship will move to her new homeport in Norfolk, Virginia.

Carnival Pride has completed its extensive upgrade and renovation in Cadiz, Spain, and returned to service for the European summer season sporting new venues, dining, and the signature red-white-and-blue hull livery.

The ship embarked its first post-refit guests on May 28, 2023 from Barcelona, beginning a 12-night one-way cruise from Spain to Dover, England, where the ship will remain homeported for most of the summer season.

Carnival Pride Returns to Service

Carnival Pride is truly a ship to be proud of, having now returned to service following a month-long refit that included bow-to-stern upgrades for the 21-year-old vessel. The ship has been in dry dock since April 28.

“I’m so proud of our team. They have done amazing work refreshing and enhancing Carnival Pride just in time for her Europe sailings,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Among the upgrades are the addition of a new Heroes Tribute Bar, the Dreams Studio for amazing portrait packages, the Carnival Adventures Shop with cruise line merchandise, and the Chef’s Table exclusive dining experience.

The Heroes Tribute Bar is of special meaning for Carnival Cruise Line, as the line sails more veterans than other cruise lines and makes special efforts to welcome and celebrate all service members.

“I’m also delighted to see the addition of the Heroes Tribute bar since it has been popular with our guests and has resonated well with military service members and their families,” said Duffy.

The ship’s steakhouse, formerly David’s, has also been refreshed and rebranded to the more familiar Fahrenheit 555, which is found aboard many of the cruise line’s ships and is a popular favorite with loyal Carnival guests.

The onboard casino has also been expanded, and the ship’s spa rebranded to the Cloud 9 Spa and Fitness Center with the latest equipment and wellness programs.

Other housekeeping work has been done aboard, including general refreshing of public areas and staterooms, and part of the ship’s disco was removed and replaced with more accessible staterooms.

“We welcome everyone on Carnival ships, so we are happy we’ve completed the work to make the ship accessible to those with disabilities,” said Duffy.

Carnival Pride first debuted in 2002, and the Spirit-class vessel’s last major refurbishment was its Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade in 2019. Now, the 88,500-gross-ton vessel is once again welcoming more than 2,100 guests onboard for each sailing, or up to nearly 2,700 when fully booked with all berths filled.

Summer in Europe

The refreshed ship will sail in Europe through the end of October. First, itineraries from Dover will include 9- and 12-night roundtrip sailings to ports of call in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, and more, with departure dates through September 1.

On September 10, 2023, the ship will embark on a one-way voyage from Dover to Rome (Civitavecchia), calling on ports in Spain and Portugal.

From Rome, Carnival Pride will offer three round-trip sailings before embarking on her transatlantic repositioning to Tampa on October 28, 2023. On that one-way cruise, the ship will visit destinations in spain, Portugal, and the Turks and Caicos before arriving in Tampa on November 12.

Carnival Pride will remain homeported from Tampa offering Western Caribbean and select Panama Canal cruises through mid-April 2024, before repositioning to Baltimore to offer Eastern Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, and Greenland/Canada sailings, depending on the departure date and itinerary length.
