Cruise Port Reaches Nearly 900,000 Passengers in Record-Breaking Year

0

In a major boost to Malta’s tourism, Valletta Cruise Port announced an exceptional year with passenger numbers nearing the 900,000 mark. The numbers surpass pre-pandemic levels.

Revival and Growth in Malta

Valletta Cruise Port revealed a significant achievement for 2023, recording nearly 900,000 passengers. This impressive figure not only marks a 65% increase compared to 2022 and but also surpasses the previous record set in 2019.

The resurgence of Malta’s cruise industry has notably contributed €85 million to the Maltese economy. This substantial financial impact comprises €32 million in spending by cruise passengers and an additional €53 million by the cruise lines, highlighting the cruise industry’s role in bolstering economic activity.

Stephen Xuereb, CEO of Valletta Cruise Port and COO of Global Ports Holding, emphasized during a press conference, “This industry leaves a substantial impact on the Maltese Islands in economic terms: services to ships and services to passengers; flights to and from Malta with an impact on airlines and the airport, with passengers also having the option of spending several days in our country before or after their cruise.”

Looking ahead, Malta’s cruise industry is poised for a major expansion with more than 50 brand-new ships scheduled to be join cruise lines’ fleets by 2028.

Importantly, 11 of these ships are expected to enter the market in 2024 alone, bolstering the already-thriving cruise tourism in Malta. Xuereb feels this influx of cruise ships will help the port surpass the 900,000-passenger movement mark in 2024.

Malta’s Minister for Tourism, Clayton Bartolo, added, “As a country, we will continue working to have more cruise companies homeporting in Malta. We are committed to support the fly and cruise sector to see it grow further. It is important that we continue to work so that the industry remains based on sustainable foundations.

Valletta Cruise Port Enhancements

In a bid to maintain its status as a popular destination in the Mediterranean cruise industry, Valletta Cruise Port completed significant infrastructure enhancements in 2023.  This included a shoreside electricity infrastructure project that successfully equipped its five main cruise ship quays with shore power facilities.

Viking Saturn became the first cruise vessel to be fully powered by the port’s Onshore Power Supply system on December 1. This was closely followed by Viking Venus, which utilized the same system upon its arrival on December 2, simultaneously charging with its sister ship.

This shoreside power project is part of a larger investment, totaling €49.9 million investment, underlining Valletta Cruise Port’s ambition to establish Grand Harbour as a frontrunner in Europe for shore supply provision to cruise ships.

Additionally, Valletta Cruise Port is adapting to the evolving demands of the cruise industry with a crucial €25 million expansion of its berthing facilities. This expansion focuses on the transformation of the Pinto 4 and 5 quays, near the Customs Department towards the Valletta Waterfront, into a singlular, integrated 300-metre quay.

The extension, expanding the quays outwards by 15 meters, will enable larger vessels to moor at the harbor, eliminating the need for pontoons during passenger boarding and disembarkation.

The project also includes the reconstruction of the Lascaris quay, which had suffered extensive damage and partial collapse. Managed by Infrastructure Malta, parts of the expansion is expected to be operational within a few months.

Two Decades of Cruise Accommodations

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Valletta Cruise Port is strategically located in the heart of the Mediterranean. It’s also known for its dynamic onshore offerings featuring a range of amenities for cruise passengers, including a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants, conveniently located opposite the berthing quays along the picturesque Valletta Waterfront.

Cruise lines scheduled to visit Malta in the first quarter of 2024 alone include Princess Cruises, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, P&O Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Oceania Cruises, which is visiting the island nation in its “180 Night Around the World in 180 Days Los Angeles to New York” cruise.

New Princess Cruise Ship Delayed, Inaugural Voyage Cancelled

Princess Cruises’ highly anticipated new ship, Sun Princess, will now be delayed and the vessel’s inaugural sailing, scheduled to depart Barcelona on February 8, 2024, has been cancelled.

The news comes as a mutual decision between Princess Cruises and Fincantieri, the shipyard building Sun Princess in Monfalcone, Italy. Few details about the cancellation are available at this time, and so far, only the inaugural 10-night sailing is impacted.

Sun Princess Delayed

The new 175,500-gross-ton Sun Princess, first in what promises to be the revolutionary Sphere class of vessels for Princess Cruises, was to have been delivered to the cruise line this month. That delivery has now been delayed and the ship’s inaugural sailing has been cancelled.

“We understand that this news is disappointing, and we share in that disappointment,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “We recognize the anticipation that surrounded this sailing, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this cancellation causes.”

The nature of the delay has not been disclosed, but could be related to any number of factors. Supply chain issues may be impacting materials at the shipyard, labor shortages or disputes could slow down finishing work on the vessel, or there may be testing or inspection issues that need to be rectified before the ship will be ready for delivery and sailing.

The inaugural cruise was to have been a 10-night “Grand Mediterranean” sailing from Barcelona with visits to Palma de Mallorca, Messina, Athens, Ephesus, Crete, and Naples before arriving in Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy on February 18.

Because only the inaugural sailing has been cancelled at this time, the delay for the ship’s delivery and debut may not be long. The second cruise planned for Sun Princess is another 10-night “Grand Mediterranean” itinerary visiting Naples, Santorini, Ephesus, Athens, Messina, and Palma de Mallorca as the ship will make her way from Rome to Barcelona. No changes have yet been announced for that cruise.

Guests booked on the ship’s second planned sailing or any upcoming voyages in the next few weeks will want to stay in close contact with Princess Cruises in case the delay is extended to impact further sailings.

Refunds and Credit Offered

Guests who had already booked the highly anticipated inaugural voyage will be receiving full, 100% refunds of their cruise fare, taxes, port fees, and other pre-paid onboard purchases, such as spa reservations, shore tours, specialty dining, drink packages, or WiFi packages.

All guests will also receive a 50% future cruise credit (FCC) based on the cruise fare that can be used on any future Princess Cruises sailing, on any vessel in the fleet. The new cruise must be booked by November 30, 2024 and have a sailing date no later than December 31, 2025.

Princess Cruises is also offering up to $200 per person to cover any change or cancellation fees related to flights. Proper receipts and change fee documentation must be submitted for that reimbursement to be considered.

Guests who have made independent arrangements for tours at ports of call during the sailing will need to contact their tour operators to inquire about cancellations or refunds.

Delays Not Unusual

While the last-minute notification of the cancellation – just two weeks before Sun Princess was to have welcomed her first guests – is a surprise, it is not unusual for new cruise ships to be delayed and inaugural sailings to be impacted.

This has been especially true during the past few years with the knock-on effect pandemic shutdowns, labor shortages, and other factors have had, creating significant impacts on shipyard operations.

Earlier this month, the itinerary for the inaugural Sun Princess sailing was adjusted, but that change is unrelated to the delay and cancellation.

Cruise Line Smashes Single-Day Booking Record Once Again

The new year is getting off to a prosperous start at Holland America Line. The premium brand revealed it has set impressive new booking records in January 2024, for the highest single-day sales in its history and best booking week during a Wave Season.

Holland America Sees Best ‘Wave Season’ Week Ever

Holland America Line eclipsed its record for single-day sales on January 16, 2023, breaking a record it set on July 11, 2023 by 18%. The new record represents the line’s best sales day since its founding in 1873.

The cruise line is also celebrating its best bookings week during Wave Season, the January to March timeframe when cruise brands roll out their best promotional deals of the year. During the week that ended on January 19, 2024, about one-third of the bookings were for Alaska voyages.

Holland America Line is a leader in the Alaska market, as the line typically deploys at least half of its 11-ship fleet to the region for seasonal sailings. The brand is considered a pioneer in Alaska cruising and recently expanded its popular “Alaska Up Close” programming that features cultural, educational, and culinary activities tied to the Native Alaskan experience.

Diving deeper into the cruise line’s booking data, the reservations made during the record-breaking January week show that 22% of bookings are for 2025 or later, indicating the stability and resiliency of the industry continues to grow.

Stacking records on top of records is a sign of continued strength for our business and an endorsement from our guests that they are truly having the time of their lives exploring the world with us,said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line

Our position as the cruise line with the most visits to Alaska’s glaciers and more ways to see wildlife is resonating, and we’re pleased to see so many guests already planning their 2025 vacations,Antorcha added.

Six Holland America Line ships will ply Alaskan waters in 2024, offering a wide range of 7-night cruises, including both northbound and southbound sailings between Whittier (Anchorage) and Vancouver, British Columbia. Guests who prefer a roundtrip sailing from a single homeport can choose options from Vancouver or Seattle.

Natural scenery is the highlight of any Alaska cruise, and every Holland America Line itinerary includes a visit to one or more of Alaska’s iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park, College Fjord, Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier, or Tracy Arm.

Similar cruise options are on sale for 2025, along with a series of 17 cruisetours that the line announced in November 2023. A new 14-day “Ultimate Denali” tour, for example, includes a 7-day voyage and a land component featuring two nights in Denali National Park, a 1-night stay in Homer, Alaska, and other adventures.

Promotional Deals Offered For a Limited Time

Holland America Line’s “Wave Season” offers provide substantial savings and extra perks to guests who book by certain cut-off dates.

The line’s “Time of Your Life” sale is offered to guests making new bookings through Feb. 29, 2024, which includes the “Have It All” premium cruise package. On select sailings, guests receive a stateroom upgrade, fare discounts, free fares for children, and reduced deposits.

Cruisers who book sooner — before Jan. 31, 2024, also receive up to a $500 per stateroom onboard credit, depending on cruise length. The “Have It All” promotion covers some shore excursions, dining and beverage packages, a WiFi plan, and other perks.

Carnival Cruise Line Rolling Out New Themed Breakfast and Pricing

Carnival Cruise Line’s special Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast has been a favorite for kids and adults alike for years, but the event is now being retired with a new Thing 1 & 2 Birthday Breakfast to be rolled out fleetwide in the next few months.

The new event is already featured on Carnival’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee, and debut dates for other Carnival ships have now been announced.

New Seuss-Themed Breakfast on Carnival Cruise Ships

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has announced a new themed breakfast coming soon across the Carnival fleet – the Thing 1 & 2 Birthday Breakfast. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are popular Dr. Suess characters and have already been guest favorites for Suess-themed events onboard Carnival ships for years.

Now, the new breakfast will feature a celebration for the fun-loving, mischievous pair, with a revamped menu and wonderful treats that both adults and younger travelers will enjoy.

“We have changed the menu a little plus renamed the event now and started this brilliant breakfast on the Carnival Jubilee,” Heald explained.

The new menu includes such delicious delights as Dr. Seuss’ A-B-Cereal choices; How Good Is It? Grinch’s Pancakes; One Berry, Two Berry, Strawberry and Peach Waffles; a Who Roast Beast Omelet; Who-Ville Red Velvet French Toast; and other options such as eggs, fruit parfaits, and yogurt parfaits. The classic “Do You Like Green Eggs and Ham?” will also remain on the menu.

Finishing the menu is the signature Thing 1 & Thing 2 Birthday Cake, with sweet cream, a red heart, and rainbow sprinkles for an especially festive flair.

In addition to the whimsical menu, the event will also include special props on each table, new music, character interactions, and more, ensuring that every guest – of any age – can not only enjoy a delicious breakfast, but make wonderful cruise vacation memories with every bite.

Fleet Rollout Dates

The new breakfast birthday party has already begun on Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee, and will be rolled out to the full Carnival fleet in the next few months. The exact departure dates for when each ship will offer the new event are as follows:

  • Carnival HorizonFebruary 25
  • Carnival ConquestFebruary 26
  • Carnival LibertyMarch 1
  • Carnival Breeze, Carnival Freedom, Carnival PanoramaMarch 2

  • Carnival SplendorApril 11
  • Carnival ParadiseApril 15
  • Carnival Elation April 20

Many of the rollout dates are undoubtedly timed to ensure the new birthday breakfast is available for popular Spring Break cruises, when more families are setting sail. Until the Thing 1 & Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast is available, guests will still be able to enjoy the Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Price Increase

With the new even comes new pricing with a significant overall increase. While the older Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast has been priced at $10 for adults and $8 for children, the new Thing 1 & Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast is $15 for adults and $10 for children.

This is a whopping 50% increase in the cost for adults to enjoy the meal, and a 25% increase in the cost for children. The meal does include the full menu as well as character interactions and entertainment during the new event, and is still one of the least expensive specialty dining options.

Dr. Seuss Carnival Breakfast

The event is described not only as a birthday party for the classic Seuss characters, but a celebration of guests who join in as well.

“The mischievous Thing 1 and Thing 2 are having a birthday party at sea — on your cruise — but in typical Seuss style they’ll actually be celebrating YOU,” the event description reads. “Whether your birthday is near, was last week, or even last year, we want to celebrate your uniqueness at Thing 1 & Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast!”

Thing 1 and Thing 2 were introduced in Theodor Geisel’s iconic “The Cat in the Hat” first published in 1957, and have been favorite characters ever since for generations of readers and Dr. Seuss fans. They have appeared in video games, cartoons, and more.

On Carnival cruise ships, the characters participate in parties, meet-and-greets, parades, and youth events on many sailings.

Carnival Cruise Line Alerts Guests to Possible Delays

Sunday, January 28 will be a busy day at PortMiami not only because there will be multiple cruise ships in port, but also because of the upcoming Miami Marathon. The race’s route crosses through downtown Miami and near the cruise port, which could cause traffic snarls and delays for travelers trying to reach their ships.

Carnival Cruise Line has alerted guests to the possible backups and is urging travelers to ensure they have ample time to reach the port for their boarding appointment, but at this time there are no expected delays or changes to embarkation.

Miami Marathon May Impact Cruise Port

The Miami Marathon will be run on Sunday, January 28, 2024, with various road closures in downtown Miami and near the cruise port that could impact traffic flow for cruise guests.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has reached out to guests to alert them to the possible traffic congestion, urging that all travelers allow sufficient time to reach the cruise terminal on schedule for their arrival time appointments.

“We are asking guests to allow ample travel time to ensure prompt arrival within their pre-selected terminal arrival appointment,” Heald said. “All guests must be on board according to the final boarding time indicated on the boarding pass.”

There are no changes to embarkation times for the three Carnival cruise ships that will be in port on Sunday – Carnival Celebration, Carnival Conquest, and Carnival Horizon – and the ships will depart on time as scheduled. Because traffic backups will likely affect how easily guests can reach the cruise port, leaving early to travel to the port will be essential.

“Please do make sure you give yourself that extra time to get to embarkation,” Heald urged.

Carnival Celebration is scheduled to depart at 4 p.m. for a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, while Carnival Horizon will also leave at 4 p.m. for a 6-night Western Caribbean cruise. Carnival Conquest will depart PortMiami at 5 p.m. for a special 14-night Southern Caribbean itinerary.

Miami Marathon Impact

Two races are being run on January 28, the full Life Time Miami Marathon as well as the associated half marathon. Including runners as well as spectators, vendors, and volunteers, more than 25,000 people participate in the two races.

The full marathon begins at 601 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami, and the course includes various roads in downtown Miami as well as the Macarthur Causeway and out onto Miami Beach.

The half marathon follows the same route as the full marathon, but breaking off from the full route in downtown Miami to reflect its shorter distance. Start times for the both races range from 5:55 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.

Miami Marathon Route
Miami Marathon Route

Road closures will be managed along the race course from 5 a.m. until 2 p.m., with local police departments on site to manage traffic and assist vehicles through gaps of runners. Because gaps can vary, traffic backups and delays are expected.

Cruise guests should plan alternate routes around the marathon path and start location if possible, or else allow extra time as they head toward the cruise port. Using ride share services or shuttles can also help minimize local traffic congestion.

Other Ships Possibly Impacted

While Carnival Cruise Line has the most ships in Miami on the day of the marathon, guests sailing with other cruise lines may also be impacted by the traffic congestion.

MSC Cruises’ MSC Divina, Norwegian Cruise Lin’s Norwegian Encore, Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, and Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas will all be in port on Sunday. Guests booked on any of those vessels should similarly plan extra travel time to reach their ships within arrival appointment times.

When all seven ships in port are accounted for with both debarking and embarking guests, as many as 57,000 cruise travelers may be moving through PortMiami on Sunday.

World’s Largest Cruise Ship Is Officially Christened in Miami

There’s officially a new name in cruising, and that is Icon of the Seas. The massive new ship from Royal Caribbean International has been christened in Miami, in a star-studded event filled with all the exciting energy the ship has been building toward ever since she was officially announced.

Icon of the Seas Officially Named

In a boldly energetic showcase of the ship’s features and all that makes her truly iconic, Icon of the Seas was officially named while docked in her homeport of Miami, Florida on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

The event was livestreamed across social media, drawing thousands of viewers and highlighting what makes the ship unique combined with traditional ceremony elements and time-honored maritime symbolism.

Traditional parts of the ceremony included a bagpipe serenade as well as blessings from both a rabbi and a pastor to bring well wishes and safety to all who may sail on the massive vessel in the years to come.

With a guest capacity of 5,610 at double occupancy and up to 7,600 when fully booked with all berths filled, along with 2,350 international crew members, that is many people under those blessings.

Hosted by American actor Mario Lopez, the naming ceremony was held in the new ship’s stunning AquaDome, with Royal Caribbean Group and Royal Caribbean International executives in attendance, as well as the Icon of Icon, Lionel Messi.

Various founding families involved with the cruise line, as well as Meyer Turku shipyard executives, crew families, local Miami-Dade County officials, and others were all present to welcome the ship into the Royal Caribbean fleet, and featured in the remarks made by Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International as well as by Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group.

“It’s been along and incredible journey,” Bayley said. “What you see through Icon and its eight incredible neighborhoods is more than 50 years of passion and innovation coming together to create truly the best family vacation.”

Liberty echoed the emphasis on family, as Icon of the Seas has truly been designed as the ultimate family vacation.

“As Icon prepares to sail forward, there is no doubt that she will leave a wake of inspiration in her path for years to come and forever change the tides of the family vacation experience,” he said.

Showcasing Icon of the Seas

Part of the naming ceremony included live drone views of the ship as well as pre-recorded footage from crew members talking about their experiences with Royal Caribbean International and aboard Icon of the Seas, as well as amazing live performances from the ship’s entertainment team.

A total of 31 vocalists performed the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of the event, with singers in various locations around the ship, including at The Pearl and in different theaters where VIPs had gathered.

Guests were also treated to an excerpt from the ship’s aquatheater show, which also highlighted how the AquaDome space can transform for different activities.

Ultimately, Icon of the Seas‘ naming ceremony was all the ship herself has become – a culmination of the cruise line’s history of innovation and groundbreaking appeal for travelers of all ages.

“From one ship and an office trailer on Biscayne Boulevard to this,” Bayley explained, “Icon is the very best of all of us. It’s our past, our present, Icon is also the future and what’s to come for Royal Caribbean. We truly have an exciting future ahead.”

At the conclusion of the night’s very special ceremony, the Icon of Icon, Lionel Messi, placed a soccer ball on the ceremonial podium to release the largest production champagne bottle available down a wire to smash into the ship’s hull, officially christening the vessel as those aboard erupted with cheers and were showered with ceremonial confetti.

Cruise Hive wishes Icon of the Seas well and hopes she has many years of smooth seas, amazing vacations, and incredible destinations ahead of her. The new ship will welcome her first guests aboard on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Another Cruise Line May Be Planning to Homeport In Jacksonville

Clues are beginning to surface that Jacksonville, Florida may soon be the homeport for another cruise line, in addition to the regular sailings offered by Carnival Cruise Line.

Between port authority board meeting reports and cruise line website updates, Norwegian Cruise Line appears to be making plans to set sail from the First Coast.

Norwegian Cruise Line May Offer Sailings From Jacksonville

Norwegian Cruise Line may soon offer homeport departures from JaxPort in Jacksonville, Florida, according to various clues and teasers about the port.

According to the Florida Times-Union, at the port authority’s board meeting on Monday, January 22, 2024, JaxPort CEO Eric Green hinted about a new cruise line expressing interest in JaxPort, but would not confirm which cruise line – other than it is not an expansion of Carnival Cruise Line’s operations.

“Our team has been busy in this area and we hope to have an announcement to share in the coming weeks,” Green said at the board meeting. “This is an added service coming from another cruise line.”

Additional time is needed for the cruise line to get approval for service, as several documents and proposals must be properly filed before an official announcement can be made. No additional meeting date has yet been set.

“We weren’t able to get it done for this meeting, but we’ll have a special board meeting in the next week or two so we can get that piece of business done as well,” said Daniel Bean, board Chairman.

Jacksonville Appears on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Website

While no officials from JaxPort have verified that it is Norwegian Cruise Line expressing interest, a new landing page has been spotted on the cruise line’s website with cruises from Jacksonville, Florida listed as “Coming Soon!”

At this time, there are no active homeport departures for Norwegian Cruise Line ships from the north Florida homeport, which is 165 miles (265 kilometers) north of the next closest Florida homeport, Port Canaveral.

The cruise line has made no official announcements about what ships might be homeported from Jacksonville, nor what itineraries might be offered. The Dames Point Bridge in Jacksonville, however, does pose a limit on vessels departing from JaxPort, as they must be less than 180 feet from the waterline to the highest point in order to sail safely under the bridge.

Carnival Cruise Ship in Jacksonville, Florida

Currently, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Elation is the only ship homeported from Jacksonville. The 71,909-gross-ton, Fantasy-class vessel is one of the smallest in the Carnival fleet, and offers 4- and 5-night sailings to the Bahamas year-round. Carnival has been sailing from Jacksonville since 2004.

Several American Cruise Lines’ river boats also sail from Jacksonville with journeys along Florida’s rivers, but no other ocean cruise line offers Jacksonville-based itineraries. Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Crystal Cruises occasionally visit Jacksonville as a port of call.

It is possible that Norwegian Cruise Line could also offer Bahamas itineraries from Jacksonville, or might opt for itineraries to Bermuda or other Caribbean destinations, depending on the sailing length. Jacksonville could also be a starting point for fall foliage cruises that venture north to New England and the Canadian maritime provinces.

As cruise itineraries are planned out years in advance when they are made available for booking, it is unlikely that any Norwegian ships would be sailing from Jacksonville at least until late 2025, but redeployments and schedule shifts are always possible.

Holland America Line Adds More Rare Legendary Voyages

Holland America Line has expanded its popular Legendary Voyages roster to include four new itineraries with departures in 2025 and 2026.

Legendary Voyages are longer cruises that range from 25 to 59 days, allowing for abundant port calls, special onboard programs, and more time for guests to immerse themselves in the featured destinations.

Guests Can Sail to the Med From New York

Four new Legendary Voyages sailings from Holland America Line, one of nine Carnival Corporation brands, will put the spotlight on the Mediterranean and the South Pacific in 2025 and 2026. The cruises are open for booking, and join a series of other Legendary Voyages itineraries released for sale in December 2023.

One of the new itineraries, a 45-day Mediterranean journey roundtrip from New York,  is sure to be a winner with cruisers who want to avoid airports and experience the thrill of transatlantic crossings coupled with an itinerary that highlights the gems of the Med region.

Setting sail aboard the 1,432-guest Volendam on October 7, 2025, the “Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” is an itinerary modeled on a cruise Holland America Line operated in 1925. Twenty ports of call, many of which were on the itinerary nearly a century ago, will again be visited. They include destinations in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and others.

The cruise will feature overnights in Rome, Istanbul, and Cairo, and late departures in several ports such as Gibraltar and Barcelona.

“Based on the popularity of our 2024 Ultimate Mediterranean cruise, it’s clear that guests are eager for more in-depth exploration of the region,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer for Holland America Line.

“Being able to offer this cruise roundtrip from New York City in 2025 creates a rare opportunity for people in North America to enjoy the Med and our award-winning service without a long flight,” Bodensteiner added.

The line’s 2024 Ultimate Mediterranean cruise Bodensteiner referenced is a 42-day sailing, also aboard Volendam, departing on November 9, 2024, and operating roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale with a similar transatlantic component.

Multiple Opportunities to Explore South Pacific

The 1,972-guest Noordam, meanwhile, will deploy to the South Pacific and operate the other three new Legendary Voyages.

The ship will offer two versions of the line’s “South Pacific Crossing” cruise, with the first one departing on October 12, 2025. The 27-day sailing cruises from Seattle to Sydney, Australia, calling at nine port. Four calls will be made in Fiji, and guests will enjoy an overnight in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A longer version, of 36 nights, departs on March 15, 2026, sailing from Sydney to Seattle. Seventeen port calls will enable guests to explore destinations such as New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, and Hawaii, where late departures are planned in Honolulu and Kona.

Noordam’s third South Pacific itinerary, “Islands of the South Pacific,” is a 28-day cruise from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. The ship will make 20 port calls in seven countries, and guests will have the opportunity to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.

Featured destinations on this Legendary Voyages cruise include Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga, along with three port calls in New Zealand.

The South Pacific is home to some of the most popular ports for cruisers. We worked to create an itinerary like no other in this region, with multiple calls to islands that are less traveled and a must-see for anyone looking to experience all that the region has to offer at an unhurried pace, said Paul Grigsby, vice president of deployment and itinerary planning at Holland America Line.

Holland America Line’s Legendary Voyages cruises are offered in a wide range of regions around the globe. Itineraries revealed earlier highlight Alaska, Arctic Circle crossings, Northern Europe and Scandinavia, Hawaii, and Tahiti, for example.

The newly released Legendary Voyages are eligible for the line’s Have It All early booking premium package. The limited-time offer covers shore excursions, specialty dining, beverages, WiFi, crew gratuities, and other services and amenities.

UK Port Anticipates Busy 2024 Cruise Season

2023 proved to be an exceptional year for the Port of Dover, and 2024 looks exciting in its own right! With several inaugural visits and increased calls by multiple cruise lines on the horizon, it’s going to be a busy cruise season for the UK port.

The Port of Dover Anticipates Busy Year For Cruises

The Port of Dover, located in the South East of England, is one of the busiest cruise ports in Britain and Northern Europe, welcoming an estimated 250,000 cruise passengers each year.

Located just over an hour from London by train, Port of Dover offers the quickest and most convenient route to the capital of England and offers the quickest sea crossing to Europe, earning it the nickname of the Gateway to Europe.

Each year, the UK port services over 20 different cruise lines between two berths, which are capable of docking up to three ships at a time. It also serves as a busy ferry port out of a separate terminal.

After a successful 2023, the popular cruise port is expecting another busy year, including six inaugural visits, increased visits from returning cruise lines, and multiple days where the port will be at cruise ship capacity.

“There is no doubt that 2024 will be an unforgettable year for us. We eagerly await the return of all our cruise lines and can’t wait to welcome those that are visiting us for the first time, says Peter Wright, head of Cruise at the Port of Dover.

“The stunning view of the White Cliffs and Dover Castle is a highlight of any cruise, and our excellent customer service and unrivalled location ensures a seamless and unforgettable holiday for all,” adds Wright.

Of the cruise lines returning to the UK port in 2024, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will be offering five cruises embarking from Dover in the summer of 2024.

“We are delighted to be returning to Dover once again, with five cruises setting sail to beautiful destinations including Norway, Iceland, Portugal and the Azores this summer,” says Clare Ward, Director of Product and Customer Service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines.

The first of the Fred. Olsen voyages will embark on a round-trip, 14-day cruise from Dover on June 27, 2024, sailing to Germany, Poland, and Finland on Borealis, the cruise line’s 1,353 passenger ship

Other familiar faces calling at the UK port this year will be AIDA Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, Saga Cruises, Viking Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises.

The Port of Dover Rides The Wave Of Success From 2023

The Port of Dover’s success in 2024 comes after an extraordinary year for cruising in 2023, complete with inaugural cruise calls from major cruise lines and around 11 million visitors, counting both cruise and ferry passengers.

On July 26, 2023, Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess called on the Port of Dover for the first time. The 2,000-guest ship visited the UK port as part of a 107-night world cruise. Her arrival was celebrated by locals with entertainment in the cruise terminal, including a storyteller who gave a behind-the-scenes look at Dover’s history and heritage.

Later, on September 8, 2023, the Gateway to Europe celebrated the inaugural visit of Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam. Similar to Coral Princess, the 2,666-passenger vessel was met with festive fanfare, including water canons, dancers, music, and local delicacies.

Dover will become Nieuw Statendam’s homeport in the UK next year, with the ten port calls scheduled for her 2025 season.

Meanwhile, the Port of Dover celebrated its most successful cruise season with Carnival Cruise Lines thus far. Carnival Pride completed 10 total sailings from the port throughout the summer, which is the largest number of calls by the cruise line to date.

Carnival Pride will be offering 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruises during the upcoming cruise season, but her sister ship, Carnival Legend, will take her place, sailing from Dover beginning June of 2024.
