Fire on Disney Treasure Cruise Ship Swiftly Dealt With

Disney Cruise Line’s newest vessel, the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure, has been making headlines since before her maiden voyage on December 21, 2024.

But no one expected this one, a scary headline for any cruise guest to read.

While the world was tuned into the Super Bowl on February 9, 2025, a passenger aboard the ship shared news that there had been a small fire.

“Please bare [sic] with me on posts. We had a medical emergency onboard in the family, there was a small fire on board, and the earthquake in the Caribbean that people were frantic about. It’s been a long day,” posted the Admin of Disney Cruise Line Community page.

The post came after a 7.6-magntiude earthquake struck the Caribbean near the Cayman Islands the evening of February 8, hours after Disney Treasure departed on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral.

“Reporting in from The Treasure, we’re all here and still afloat,” shared another guest, providing more details. “When Captain Andy [McRonald] came on and rattled off the crew warning/instructions, I assumed medical emergency.”

However, the announcement had been a Code Red, with red indicating fire.

“The cruise director came on maybe an hour later while was doing Prima Notte at Palo and explained it was a small fire in one of the incinerators that the crew ably took care of,” the guest continued.

Other passengers confirmed the fire took place in an incinerator room and was quickly extinguished, with some making light of the location, posting, “A fire in an incinerator sounds like exactly what should be happening” and “small fires in the ‘incinerator’ would be, um, a pretty good spot for them.”

Disney Treasure is continuing on her voyage, unaffected by the incident with no operations compromised, and will arrive at her first call today, February 10, in Cozumel, Mexico.

The full itinerary includes a call in George Town, Grand Cayman, on February 11, days after the National Weather Service warned the island – and then cleared it – of possible tsunami surges following the large earthquake that took place deep in the floor of the Caribbean Sea.

The warnings also extended to Jamaica and the Bahamas, where the cruise ship is also calling before its voyage ends in Port Canaveral, Florida, on February 15.

The islands have been on heightened alert due to potential aftershocks. Since the original seismic event, a multitude of smaller shocks have taken place off the coast of southern Puerto Rico, ranging from 2.8 to 3.1 magnitude.

Not Common, But Not Uncommon

This is not the first time a small fire has taken place on a new and highly publicized vessel. In June 2024, just five months after its maiden voyage, Royal Caribbean’s massive Icon of the Seas had a small incident.

The world’s largest ship at 248,663 gross tons and carrying up to 5,610 passengers had been docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, when the incident briefly knocked out power and caused a slight delay in departure.

A spokesperson from the cruise line told CNN that minor fires are “not common, but also not uncommon.”

In fact, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream recently experienced a fire in the incinerator area in November 2024. That fire, however, forced passengers to evacuate the Vibe and Edge areas during an open house.

Fire at sea is a top concern for cruise ships. All cruise lines are readily prepared for emergencies like these with firefighting teams on standby 24 hours a day, fire extinguishers and sprinkler heads located throughout the ship, and smoke detectors installed in all staterooms.

Carnival Cruise Line Reveals Newest Loyalty Gift

The most loyal guests of Carnival Cruise Line have a new gift that is rolling through the fleet and will make getting ready for their next cruise much easier – packing cubes.

The cubes are already available aboard the cruise line’s newest vessel, Carnival Jubilee, and will gradually become available through the end of February and into early March on all 27 ships.

The exact date of availability will depend on how many cruisers receive the gifts and what each ship’s individual supply of the previous gift may be. The most recent gift, a canvas baseball cap, was introduced in October 2024.

The new packing cube gift was revealed by Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, and was met with great enthusiasm by eager travelers.

“Here is the latest Diamond and Platinum gift. They are packing cubes,” Heald announced. “They will be on every ship in the coming weeks. Some ships will still continue with the baseball cap, but probably by the end of this month and the start of March it will be the packing cubes that will be across the fleet.”

The cubes are Carnival’s classic navy blue with a red zipper closure and the VIFP Club logo as an attached patch.

Packing cubes are lightweight zippered bags that help compartmentalize and organize one’s luggage, saving space and making packing easier.

Depending on the design style, they can also compress whatever is being packed and offer even more room for souvenirs or extra items – such as packing along some cruise ducks!

Guests immediately responded to the revelation with positive comments, highlighting the usefulness of the new gift.

“This is probably the best gift I’ve seen offered. I would be very happy with packing cubes.”

“Definitely a gift we can and will use! Fabulous!”

“Something I would use every trip, I love packing cubes.”

Because those who receive the gifts are already frequent travelers – Platinum and Diamond level cruisers in Carnival’s Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) program – the packing cubes are sure to be popular and a welcome addition to future cruise preparation.

Receiving Loyalty Gifts

Travelers must be either Platinum or Diamond guests in the VIFP program to receive the gifts. Carnival Cruise Line awards travelers one point for every day they have sailed with the cruise line.

The Platinum level of loyalty begins at 75 points, while Diamond status is only achieved at 200 points – the equivalent of more than 28 7-night sailings.

To collect their gifts, guests must visit the Pixels Photo Gallery onboard their cruise ship. A list of eligible passengers is available and checked to ensure no one claims more gifts than they have earned through the loyalty program.

In addition to the packing cubes, Platinum and Diamond guests are also given loyalty pins that feature new designs each year. These pins are customized with individual ship names, making them highly sought after as cruise memento collectibles.

The packing cubes are not the first time Carnival Cruise Line has offered practical gifts that travelers might use on future cruises.

In the past, loyalty gifts have included valet bags, duffle bags, and small tote bags, all of which have been received with varying levels of enthusiasm. Packing cubes in a different design were also offered several years ago.

Carnival changes the loyalty gift offering every few months as a “thank you” for frequent travelers. Other gifts in the past have included Tervis tumblers, blankets, journals, headphones, hats, can koozies, and much more.

Different gifts have been received with different levels of both gratitude and disdain. While no gift will appeal to every traveler, Heald encourages the gifts to be shared with non-Platinum or Diamond guests.

“I do hope that you enjoy them,” Heald said of the packing cubes. “If you don’t, well, hopefully somebody you give them to will.”

Some frequent cruisers will also give away the gifts not because they don’t enjoy them, but because they are able to cruise so often that they simply have collected many duplicate gifts.

They may then share the gifts with family members or friends, or even other cruisers onboard the ship – giving them a great souvenir and the ambition to join the upper levels of the VIFP club themselves.

Virgin Voyages Announces New Shows, Menus, and Itineraries

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Virgin Voyages has decided to show some love to its beloved Sailors by introducing a slew of changes coming to its fleet of ships in 2025.

The adults-only cruise line owned by Sir Richard Branson will enhance its culinary and entertainment options, providing a refreshed experience for return passengers and something for first-time cruisers to whet their whistle.

“Cupid must have an affinity for the world’s No. 1 cruise line as February 14 is a holiday forever etched in Virgin Voyages’ history,” said the cruise line.

“Celebrated as the day Richard Branson’s award-winning travel brand took delivery of its first ship, Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages also opened the doors to its palm-grove-inspired Terminal V at PortMiami.”

At the heart of the culinary updates, Extra Virgin, the fleet’s Italian trattoria, will debut new dishes such as seafood risotto and roasted monkfish beginning in May.

Meanwhile, Gunbae, the only Korean BBQ at sea, will refresh its menu with additions like bulgogi fire meat, kimbap rolls, and bo ssam (whole roasted pork butt with oysters and caviar), to be introduced in July.

For entertainment, the Scarlet Lady is transforming its theater into a hub for musical celebration spanning multiple areas in two new shows. The first will be an interactive Y2K New Year’s-style party, while the second will be a concert-style “It’s a Rock Show-ke,” where guests sing along with a live band.

Additionally, the forthcoming Brilliant Lady, set to join the fleet in September, will debut shows that draw on the musical heritage of Branson’s Virgin Records, celebrating five decades of influential music.

Virgin Voyages also revealed it is adding a new LOLz Supper Club series. Found exclusively on Scarlet Lady, this free dinner-and-a-show concept features comedians in the Manor nightclub paired with an optional three-course dinner.

The cruise line is also enhancing its specialty sailings to be filled with more laughter. The United Kingdom will see the return of the cruise line’s popular Comedy Fest this year, featuring renowned comedian Jack Whitehouse.

The 6-night cruise will set sail from Portsmouth, England, on August 30, 2025, aboard Scarlet Lady, just after Valiant Lady introduces the fest to the US for the first time.

Debuting August 10, 2025, the 5-night Comedy Fest from Miami will feature calls in Costa Maya, Mexico, and the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas. Details on scheduled comedians will be released at a later time.

The cruise line also teased more dining and entertainment details will be released in March surrounding the 2,762-passenger Brilliant Lady, which will be the fourth and final addition to the fleet.

Although all eyes may be on Brilliant LadyScarlet Lady is showing off a new look following a late November 2024 dry dock. The 110,000-gross-ton vessel added new suites, VIP poolside cabanas, and Chinese dining, while introducing a new red-headed mermaid.

Expanded Caribbean Offerings for 2026-27

Even with all the excitement onboard, cruisers will especially love the destinations to come in 2026-2027.

Noteworthy among these are the 5-night “Jamaican Daze & Bimini Breeze” and “Cayman Isles & Bimini Beach Miles,” which include stops in ports such as Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and George Town, Cayman Islands.

Passengers will also get to call in Panama City, Panama, and on the island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands for the first time, as well as enjoy special Haunted Halloween and transatlantic sailings.

The cruise line is also adjusting the schedules of its popular 4-night Fire & Sunset Soirees to Key West, Florida, and Bimini. These will now depart on Thursday and return on Mondays so guests can enjoy sailing without extensive time off.

New Designs Revealed for Residential Ship Setting Sail in 2028

Scottish firm Clydebuilt’s cruise ship Dark Island is a global citizen’s dream. That is, if you can dish out the money for one of the 236 ultra-luxury residential suites.

Planning for the construction of the Dark Island started in 2019, focusing on both environmental sustainability and the longevity of the ship. The long-term goal is for this cruise ship to last a minimum of 50 years, outnumbering the current average for most passenger ships (30 years).

Back in November of 2021, Clydebuilt had planned on selling 101 suites on an 8-deck ship, ranging in price from $8,000,000 to $110,000,000.

The updated design plans outline that the Dark Island will have 12 decks and 236 suites with a resident capacity of 724. The ship also has accommodations for 540 crew members.

Another luxury accommodation is the butler service, something Clydebuilt wanted to include to really capture a luxury hotel-like experience.

There is no direct mention if there has been an update to the suite pricing with the newly introduced design plans. However, pricing is based according to the location on the ship, the square footage, and the view.

You can take a look at what the future residential ship will look like in some rendering footage below:

Once completed, Dark Island will sit at 89,750 gross tons and 748ft in length. To put that into perspective, 748ft is twice the size of an American football field.

The Dark Island was initially supposed to set sail at the end of 2025, but is now being scheduled for its maiden voyage in 2028.

While the full itinerary for the maiden voyage has yet to be finalized, it has been reported that it will be an 800-day-long world cruise.

Guests will be able to vote on the itinerary for the second voyage, but the captain will make the final decision. This at least gives suite owners the chance to have some input about stops worldwide they are interested in, something not offered on most cruises.

There are also some wonderful accommodations that come with owning a suite on the Dark Island.

Living in residential suites on a cruise ship

At the moment, there are 1, 2, and 3 bedroom suites available for sale on the Dark Island. The size of the suites ranges from 420.6ft² all the way to 2,690ft². As an added bonus, every suite on the ship comes with a sea view.

Residents can personalize their suites with custom designs, reflecting their individual tastes in the interior decor.

Similar to having a homeowners association, there is a yearly service fee. The benefits that come with this are better than you might think!

The service fee covers everything from wifi to excursions & spa treatments, and best of all, every meal and select menu beverages in a restaurant of your choice.

The idea of the Dark Island is that guests can come and go as they please focusing more on the lifestyle environment compared to the vacation vibe of a typical cruise ship.

When one purchases one of the suites, it is possible to rent them out, but there is a minimum rental period of 6-months. Family and friends of suite owners will be able to stay on the ship but only for short-term stays.

Residential cruise ships have been around since 2002, when MS The World set sail. Some cruise lines have recently been exploring creating more affordable residential cruise ship suites, such as Villa Vie Residences and Storylines.

Clydebuilt’s Dark Island is almost at the extreme other end of these ‘affordable’ residential cruise ships, focusing on high-end luxury suites and accommodations. You know, like a butler!

Now, it’s just a waiting game to see if Dark Island will ever set sail. While the idea is that guests can come and go as they please, an 800-day cruise can sound intimidating.

As recently as November 2023, Life at Sea’s Fairytale had its three-year cruise cancelled. The big issue was actually the lack of a cruise ship; yes, you read that right, there was literally no ship.

Worth Reading: Different Type Of Cruises You Must Experience

Miray Cruises (the parent company of Life at Sea) failed to inform guests ahead of the 130,000-mile world voyage that the cruise ship they had planned to purchase had not worked out.

The good news is that, unlike Miray Cruises, Clydebuilt’s Dark Island is a new build. It will be a sigh of relief when there are construction updates instead of renderings.

Over 100 Guests and Crew Sick on Holland America Cruise Ship

A second Holland America Line ship has now reported what is believed to be a norovirus outbreak, the fourth report of a gastrointestinal illness from a cruise ship so far in 2025.

The most recent outbreak has been reported aboard Rotterdam on the ship’s current sailing, a 12-night roundtrip “Panama Canal Sunfarer” itinerary from Fort Lauderdale.

The ship departed on Sunday, February 2, and has already visited Half Moon Cay, Aruba, Colombia, the Panama Canal, and Costa Rica.

Along the way, however, a total of 119 individuals aboard the ship have now reported vomiting and diarrhea. Of those reports, 107 are among the passengers – a total of 4.1% of the 2,614 travelers aboard the ship.

The remaining 12 cases reported are among the ship’s 969 crew members, a total of 1.2% of the crew currently serving onboard Rotterdam.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires that any ship operating within US jurisdiction – sailing to or from a US port, even as a port visit – must report any outbreak once cases equal more than 3% of either guests or crew members.

In response to the cases onboard, the crew of Rotterdam increased cleaning and sanitation procedures, as well as isolated both guests and crew members reporting symptoms.

Specimens have also been collected for confirmation testing, which has confirmed norovirus as the causative agent.

There has been no impact on Rotterdam‘s itinerary and the ship remains on course for her final port visit of the voyage, a stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica on Wednesday, February 12. The ship will return to Fort Lauderdale on Friday, February 14.

It is possible that additional cleaning and sanitizing will take place either in Jamaica or once guests have all debarked in Fort Lauderdale. This might have a slight impact on embarkation timing, and Holland America Line will reach out to notify guests should that be necessary.

The ship’s next sailing, a 9-night itinerary to Curacao, Aruba, and Half Moon Cay, should not be impacted. Guests onboard may notice additional cleaning measures still underway, however, but all activities and events should move forward as planned.

Why So Many Outbreaks?

The current norovirus outbreak onboard Rotterdam is the fourth report of norovirus aboard a cruise ship so far in 2025, and the seventh outbreak of any gastrointestinal illness reported this year.

The previous norovirus outbreaks have been aboard Holland America Line’s Volendam, Viking Cruises’ Viking Mars, and Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess. Thus far, the report from Coral Princess has been the largest, with 145 total cases – 6.7% of guests and 2.1% of crew members.

According to the CDC, norovirus is the most common cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the US, with roughly 2,500 outbreaks reported annually.

CDC Sign

The disease is easily passed through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. This makes it especially easy to spread anywhere there are groups of people, such as schools and restaurants.

On cruise ships, even with extra cleaning measures already in place as part of daily protocols, outbreaks can still occur.

That so many outbreaks have already occurred in 2025 – there haven’t been this many in January/February since 2019 – might indicate a new strain of norovirus has emerged.

The CDC notes that “in years when there is a new strain of the virus, there can be 50% more norovirus illness.”

Guests can protect themselves by thoroughly washing their hands after using the restroom and before eating, avoiding using common serving utensils, and minimizing touching shared surfaces such as railings and elevator buttons.

Travelers who do exhibit symptoms should always report their illness to the onboard medical center so it can be treated appropriately.

Carnival Fleet Cruise Director Launches New Interview Video Series

Did you know that Carnival Cruise Director Gary Blair is actually a skilled musician and accordion player?

These are the types of fun facts cruisers can learn from Fleet Director Lee Mason’s new video series – in which Mason wants to help Carnival fans get to know the cruise directors they might meet on their next voyage.

Mason, who was promoted to the role of Fleet Cruise Director at the end of 2024 after spending around eight years as a cruise director himself, has launched his new “Get to Know” video series as of February 10, 2025.

The interviews will be short – ranging from five to 10 minutes long – and can be found on Mason’s YouTube Channel (Lee Fleet Cruise Director).

“With getting to travel the fleet in my new role, I thought it was an ideal opportunity to help you get to know our team of incredible cruise directors, and so I am starting a new video series,” Mason shared on his Facebook. This will be short 5 min interviews for you to get to know our team.”

His first interview was with Gary Blair, who is about to finish his current contract onboard Carnival Miracle on February 17, 2025. (But don’t worry – Blair will be back onboard the Spirit-class ship from May 5, 2025, until November 22, 2025).

While Blair is no stranger to Carnival, he recently returned to the cruise line after taking a break to work at Great Wolf Lodge as the Director of Guest Services from December of 2021 until the end of 2024 – making this a great opportunity for cruise fans to get reacquainted.

Throughout their conversation, Mason asked Blair about his musical upbringing, his experience as a cruise director (starting on the now-retired Carnival Ecstasy in 2017), and even his guilty pleasures (such as his affinity for bad reality TV).

While all Carnival Cruise directors lead the entertainment as the heads of the famous Fun Squad, the interview also went into how Blair brings the fun in a unique way as cruise director.

“If you cruise with me, I host a Scottish dance class and we do a Ceilidh…it’s kind of like a celebratory dance. Think country line dancing, with like partners, set moves, everyone does it all together, and it is like a real sweat fest,” Blair explained while talking about how he pays homage to his Scottish heritage onboard.

Blair also talked about his favorite part of being a cruise director – and what he hopes guests will take away from sailing on one of his voyages.

“It’s being a part of the experience of the guests in such a positive way. You know, when they’re having fun, I’m having fun, and it really is like just the best feeling in the world hearing their laughter, seeing their smiles, and getting to meet them…” Blair said.

Watch Lee Mason’s Interview with Gary Blair Below:

No Shortage of Beloved Cruise Directors

Lee Mason, who is hosting the video series, is one of four Carnival fleet directors – and this number will likely stay small. That said, the position was only just announced in 2022, so it’s relatively new and the total number of fleet directors hasn’t been confirmed.

While Mason was once a beloved Carnival cruise director, this promotion ranks him and his colleagues above the cruise directors – where they now oversee the entertainment across the fleet and help to train new and existing cruise directors.

But while there are only a handful of fleet directors, Carnival still employs 30-40 cruise directors at once. There is a cruise director onboard all 27 operating ships at a time, with another waiting in the wings to seamlessly take the reins after the current cruise director’s contract ends.

Typically, the cruise directors spend several months at sea, followed by at least a month at home to recuperate, with these extra fun crew members taking turns in the role based on who is on the clock and who is at home.

Some Carnival cruise directors even gain celebrity status in the cruising community – with Kyndall “Fire” Magyar one of the more recognizable names on the current roster. She is currently onboard Carnival Jubilee.

Many also know the name John Heald as Carnival’s brand ambassador, but some might not realize that he first rose to fame as a cruise director. In his sailing days, Heald filled the coveted role on ships like Carnival Splendor.

But with many of the cruise directors cultivating quite a following, including Blair, there was already quite an appetite for more of these interview videos.

“Love this idea Lee! It’s great to know a bit about the person behind the mic on our cruise! You always seem to find ways to identify what we want to know BTS from your POV,” one person wrote on Mason’s Facebook page.

“Wow, what a BRILLIANT idea! We LOVE to get to know each CD. We had the great fortune of cruising with Gary when he returned to Galveston on the Miracle in October…He did an AMAZING JOB! Thanks Gary for being the first interviewee on Lee’s new [YouTube] video sequence,” another added.

Mason did not indicate which cruise director would be featured next or when the next interview will be posted, but there will certainly be more to come.

YouTuber Compares Cost of Cruise with Price of LA Living

As someone who lives in the heart of Los Angeles, California, I naturally perked up when I saw a YouTube video comparing the cost of living in LA with the cost of living on a ship – especially since I know first hand what my rent payments look like each month, and they aren’t cheap!

The video in question was posted on YouTube by Jeenie (@Jeenie.Weenie), where the content creator has 11.8 million subscribers. She also has an additional 11 million followers on TikTok and 1.9 million followers on Instagram.

The influencer rose to fame by posting videos about her experiences as a flight attendant, so she certainly knows a thing or two about travel. And as she was recently onboard MSC Cruises’ MSC Grandiosa for a week-long voyage, she couldn’t help but think about how far her money traveled at sea.

She ultimately found that it cost around $9,200 per month for a family of three (like hers) to live in Los Angeles, while she calculated the cost of spreading her family across two balcony deluxe staterooms at $28,470 for a month based on what she spent for her 7-day voyage.

As an LA native, I personally think the total for a month in Los Angeles could be on the low side, especially for bigger families and more prestigious areas, while her monthly cruise ship estimate is high.

For example, she calculated the cost with paying for two staterooms. If she even cut that down to one cruise cabin, the total would already decrease significantly.

But one thing Jeenie and I can agree on is that sailing on an all-inclusive cruise line certainly comes with its perks – and it’s nice not having to pay extra for food and entertainment unless you want to splurge on specialty dining for an important occasion or some of the premium entertainment options.

She also pointed out luxuries like having a swimming pool and water slides in your “backyard” that is maintained without any effort on the part of the cruisers’.

“I’m also pretty sure that 99.9999999% of LA homes do not have their own water slides like this in their backyard, so I mean a water park in your backyard, that’s a cool perk,” Jeenie said.

As a mom to a young son, she also loved having access to the kids’ clubs onboard – where her son could be supervised at no extra charge when she was busy.

“That was one huge. You guys all know how much daycare costs,” the YouTuber exclaimed.

However, she was a bit surprised by the price of the laundry services, with the packages to wash a single T-shirt starting at around $6 – and MSC doesn’t currently offer a cheaper self service laundry option

As a content creator, she also wasn’t thrilled by the cost of the internet – and felt the speed wasn’t fast enough to accommodate her posting needs as a well-known influencer.

“Even with the premium package, which I bought, I still can’t upload or download things like videos. It’s been a nightmare. So, I’ll actually have to wait until we dock and use data…I feel like I’m paying twice right now,” Jeenie added.

You can watch Jeenie’s YouTube video – and see her price breakdown for yourself – below:

How Easy is it to Live on a Cruise Ship?

There are many people who do live on cruise ships and find it more affordable than their lives on land – but Jeenie’s young family of three isn’t the typical demographic.

Most of the people who choose a life on the high seas are either single guests who can work remotely from anywhere or retirees.

Some cruise lines have even made Wi-Fi changes to better serve remote professionals and encourage more to adopt this lifestyle. For example, Virgin Voyages recently introduced its new “Work from Sea” premium internet package

For both younger and older residents, living at sea does come with many perks, such as all-inclusive dining options, waking up almost every day to a new destination, essentially unlimited entertainment options onboard, and a medical center that can address at least basic needs.

That said, the medical center may not be equipped to handle all conditions and visits often come with a heftier price tag than on land due to differences in how the facilities must be kept fully stocked and staffed at all times.

Cruise fans looking to live on a cruise ship full-time will also need to decide if they would like to book back-to-back cruises or invest in a home on a residential cruise ship.

One famous back-to-back cruiser, who just completed his 1,000th sailing with Royal Caribbean, is “Super Mario” Salcedo.

The financial planner has lived full-time on cruise ships for over 20 years by strategically booking back-to-back sailings, and estimates that he spends around $101,000 a year doing so – although it’s possible to live onboard for as little as $28,000 per year (before extras).

Salcedo’s total also comes in below Jeenie’s estimated cost of living in Los Angeles. With her educated guess set at $9,200 a month, the yearly cost to live in LA would be $110,400.

Other cruise lines, such as Villa Via Residences, allows their guests to own their cabins outright for 15 years. The cruise line operates a continuous world cruise onboard Villa Vie Odyssey, while finally set sail in October 2024 after months of delays.

Meanwhile, a Scottish firm called Clydebuilt has unveiled new designs for Dark Island – which is a high-end residential ship expected to launch in 2028 and remain in service for at least 50 years.

While Villa Vie Residences’ cabins can be purchased for $129,999 and up, the suites on Clydebuilt’s luxury vessel will range from $8,000,000 to $110,000,000.

Carnival Cruise Line Eases Concerns Over Laundry for Passengers

Laundry – all cruisers have it, but do you bring it home, do it onboard yourself, or send it out for laundry service onboard before the voyage ends?

A lot of travelers don’t enjoy putting dirty clothing back into the luggage. Not all cruise ships are equipped with self-service laundry areas, however, and some guests just don’t want to spend time on their vacation tending to laundry – whether hand-washing items or using available machines.

In that case, taking advantage of a cruise line’s laundry service can be a great option for clean clothes on the way home. But how does such a laundry service work with thousands of guests onboard?

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has answered several laundry-related questions recently. His answers have offered insight into the laundry process that can ease guests’ concerns about how their laundry is handled.

“When sending laundry out to be washed and folded is it true our clothes [are] washed with multiple other peoples’ laundry?” one guest asked.

“Can you tell me about the laundry please. If I place my delicates in a mesh bag that I bring on board, will the laundry count it as one item? I hate to give my delicates to the Jubilee cruise laundry without it. I do not want to have my laundry mixed with others,” another guest asked.

Heald answered both questions with similar responses, describing how the laundry process works.

“No, it’s in a different mesh bag,” he confirmed. “Each guest sends a bag of laundry, has their own laundry washed in a mesh bag. Those bags are in the same machine, obviously it would be impossible to do it otherwise, but they are not mixed freely with other peoples’ laundry.”

One of the guests also inquired about whether or not loyalty status impacted how laundry is processed.

“I have Diamond status laundry privileges now so would like to know how this works,” the guest noted, explaining that they did not want their laundry mixed.

The privileges the guest is referring to is the loyalty program benefit Carnival Cruise Line provides to top tier guests.

At the Diamond level, when a guest has accumulated 200 or more points in Carnival’s “Very Important Fun Person” program, guests are provided with unlimited complimentary wash and fold laundry service.

For comparison, at the Platinum level (75-199 VIFP points), guests receive a limited number of bags of wash and fold laundry depending on the length of the cruise. No free laundry services are provided at lower loyalty tiers.

Heald used his characteristic wit to explain that all laundry is processed equally, regardless of a guest’s individual loyalty status.

“We do not in fact have a special washing machine for diamond guests’ laundry,” he said. “Sorry but your Victoria’s Secret and Calvin Kleins are in the same washing machine as Blue Card holders Fruit of the Looms.”

The “Blue Card” is Carnival Cruise Line’s first level of VIFP loyalty, brand new cruisers on their very first sailing.

Should You Use Carnival’s Laundry Service?

Other guests chimed in with a variety of suggestions about Carnival’s laundry services.

Some guests noted that it might not be a good idea to send out one’s best garments for the wash and fold service. All the laundry is done in industrial machines and will not necessarily get the most “delicate” treatment, even for one’s “delicates.”

To be fair, however, many guests noted that their laundry is always done promptly and with great care, coming back cleaner than they might even do at home.

Some travelers also highly recommend the cruise line’s pressing service, a great option to ensure formal attire may look its very best for elegant evening.

Another guest expressed concern that their laundry doesn’t always smell “clean” when it comes back from Carnival’s service. Others promptly joined in noting that the cruise line does not use the same detergents as guests may use at home, and perfumes aren’t present for that “fresh” smell.

“We try not to use biological detergent because some people may have allergies, but clean it most certainly is,” Heald explained.

If guests have extreme allergies to detergents, soaps, or perfumes, it may be best to avoid any potentially unknown laundry service and instead take care of such matters at home.
