Carnival-Owned Ship Sold to Resorts World Cruises

Resorts World Cruises, specializing in Asia and Middle East itineraries, has acquired its third ship, the 1,800-guest Star Scorpio, which will launch operations from Singapore in late March 2025.

Star Scorpio most recently sailed as Pacific Explorer for P&O Australia, and before that as Dawn Princess, for Princess Cruises. Both are Carnival Corporation brands.

Under her new deployment, the ship will homeport at the Singapore Cruise Center and sail her inaugural voyage on March 26, 2025, operating a 5-night itinerary calling at Melaka, Malaysia, and Jakarta, Indonesia. Ten departures will be offered in March and April, and June and July 2025.

During April and May 2025, additional 5-night cruises will call at Bangkok and Ko Samui, Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Four-night options will call at Ko Samui and Pulau Redang, Malaysia, among other options.

The itineraries were created to enable guests to embark the ship and sail roundtrip not only from Singapore but also from Jakarta, Bangkok, Melaka, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Star Scorpio’s dual homeport in Singapore with different countries in Asia will offer Indonesians, Thais, Malaysians and Vietnamese round-trip cruises from their ports during their peak holiday periods without the need to fly to another country, said Michael Goh, president of Resorts World Cruises

The purchase of Star Scorpio followed Carnival Corporation’s announcement in June 2024 that the P&O Australia brand would be dissolved and integrated into Carnival Cruise Line. P&O Australia operated a three-ship fleet that included Pacific Explorer, Pacific Adventure, and Pacific Encounter.

Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter are in the process of being transferred to Carnival Cruise Lines. Both ships sail mainly in the South Pacific and are considered likely to remain there.

At the time of Carnival Corporation’s announcement, industry watchers theorized that Pacific Explorer, built in 1997, would probably be scrapped.

However, Resorts World Cruises has announced the ship will undergo a $50 million refit in Singapore prior to entering service for the brand. The ship’s renovation will include the addition of restaurants and bars, and recreational spaces.

A Closer Look at Star Scorpio’s Departure Choices

Using multiple cities as embarkation ports, Star Scorpio will offer roundtrip options from several countries in Asia.

From Jakarta, the ship will sail 8 5-night cruises between March 29 and April 13, 2025, calling at Singapore and Melaka. The dates coincide with school holidays in Indonesia.

Five departures from Bangkok are offered from April 22 to May 12, 2025, during Thailand’s school holidays. The 5-night cruises call at Ko Samui and Singapore.

From May 28 to June 9, 2025, a 3-night cruise has five departure dates. The sailings from Melaka will visit Singapore and Medan, Indonesia.

Four departures from Ho Chi Minh City are scheduled from July 9 to 24, 2025. The 5-night voyages, also happening during school holidays, call at Melaka and Singapore.

Besides Star Scorpio, Resorts World Cruises, which was founded in 2022, operates the 3,300-guest Genting Dream and the 1,856-guest Resorts World One.

Genting Dream formerly sailed for Dream Cruises until parent company Genting Hong Kong went bankrupt. The ship was built in 2016.

Resorts World One was also owned by Dream Cruises and sailed as Explorer Dream. Built in 1998, the ship began life as SuperStar Virgo for Star Cruises.

New Disney Ship Experiences Malfunction Days Before Launch

With just days to go before her maiden voyage, Disney Treasure experienced an unexpected glitch that made it rain inside her Grand Hall.

In the days leading up to her maiden voyage – which embarks from Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, on December 21, 2024 – a select number of lucky guests (mostly members of the media or travel professionals) have gotten an early preview of Disney Cruise Line’s newest addition.

On December 15, 2024, some of those early guests got to witness a surprise rain shower in the Grand Hall due to a malfunction with the sprinklers.

“An apparent technical glitch in the HI-FOG (fire suppression system) in the Grand Hall of the Disney Treasure produced an indoor rain shower for about three minutes earlier today,” a witness posted, along with a photo of the water pouring down.

It was perhaps the best possible timing for this type of malfunction to occur, as no paying passengers were on board and the crew still had time to clean up the mess before her historic inaugural voyage.

As recently as the last month or two, Royal Caribbean passengers were less lucky – as they got soaked by sprinkler malfunctions on two different ships.

The first incident happened onboard Symphony of the Seas during a Halloween party October 31, 2024 – during which the special effects used to create the spooky ambiance accidentally set off the sprinkler system in the Royal Promenade.

The watertight doors also went down automatically when the sprinklers went on – which is what they are supposed to do to prevent a real fire from spreading through the ship in an emergency – effectively trapping guests in the surprise rain shower.

On November 16, 2024, Harmony of the Seas also experienced a similar sprinkler accident – although it’s not clear what caused the false alarm this time.

But even with the occasional malfunction, these sprinklers remain essential in the unlikely event of a fire onboard.

Will Disney Treasure be Ready for her Maiden Voyage?

According to witnesses, a team from Disney Treasure’s 1,555 crew members got to work quickly to clean up the mess. Pictures shared to X show several cast members (as all Disney employees are called) tending to the carpet and blocking off the soaked area.

From the photos, it appears that the paint job and Aladdin-themed decorations, such as a statue of the genie’s lamp, are unharmed.

One guest who arrived to see the new 4,000-passenger ship that day said that the festivities mostly went on as planned – but that the carpet remained blocked off and they had to wait in the terminal for about an hour before boarding, presumably because of the three-minute storm.

“We’re on board and we still haven’t been able to access the main hall floor for photos or anything. They did set up the band, but the carpet is fully blocked off while it dries. We weren’t on yet when it happened, we held for about an hour in the terminal,” they posted on the afternoon of December 15.

Thanks to the quick action of the crew members – and the use of industrial grade dryers – guests embarking on Disney Treasure’s maiden voyage likely won’t have any idea that the sprinkler malfunction ever happened.

Because of how quickly the soaking was addressed, there likely wasn’t time for smelly mold or mildew to develop – with top-of-the-line industrial grade dryers capable of drying a carpet in anywhere from two to 12 hours.

When guests of the maiden voyage are welcomed into the Grand Hall on Saturday – which is where they will first enter when they board the ship – the experience should be as magical as Disney Cruise Line hoped and planned for.

These first official guests will then enjoy a 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and Castaway Cay, which is Disney’s original private island destination in the Bahamas.

After her maiden voyage, the 144,000-gross ton ship will be continuously alternating between week-long Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

Carnival Aids Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Vanuatu

On December 16, 2024, Port Vila, Vanuatu, was rocked by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake – with the island nation still in the process of assessing the damage, rescuing missing survivors, and counting their dead.

The massive quake occurred 19 miles from the port at 12:47 p.m. local time – and was followed by a series of sizable aftershocks reaching up to magnitude 5.5.

While a situation like this is a true tragedy, Carnival Cruise Line is trying to make things a little easier by making a $60,000 donation to ProMedical Vanuatu, which is a paramedic service that has played a critical role in searching for survivors and providing medical care to the injured in the wake of the quake.

“Carnival Corporation & plc is donating $60,000 to first responder, ProMedical Vanuatu. The ProMedical team worked around the clock for the first 48 hours after tragedy struck in Port Vila, searching for survivors in the rubble and helping provide critical medical care to the injured,” Carnival wrote in a statement.

“This donation has been made possible thanks to all of Carnival Corporation & plc cruise lines operating in the region – Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, Cunard and P&O Cruises Australia as well as the generosity of P&O guests,” Carnival added in a nod to its multiple brands.

The sizable donation will be put toward making sure ProMedical Vanuatu can continue providing ongoing care to the approximately 49,034 people who call Port Vila their home.

As is the case with Royal Caribbean and Carnival’s sister-brands, the decision has already been made to divert ship calls away from the cruise port until the mass damage can be assessed and repaired.

However, Carnival intends to remain in contact with the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office and other aid agencies – and has offered its ships for additional assistance if needed.

Ships like Carnival Luminosa are already scheduled to be sailing in the region.

A Long Road to Recovery

Vanuatu is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of about 83 volcanic islands spread across 800 miles – one of which is Port Vila.

Located on Efate Island, Vanuatu’s capital is one of the larger and more central islands and serves as the nation’s hub for government and tourism – but it will likely be at least several weeks (if not longer) before cruise ship calls can resume.

While authorities are still assessing the damage, it’s already clear that essential infrastructure has been damaged – including to government buildings housing the US, UK, New Zealand, and French Embassies. The earthquake also cut power and hindered access to water supplies.

At the port itself, massive landslides near the shipping terminal have isolated the area and buried part of the wharf.

Caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai quickly declared a state of emergency for Vila and announced a curfew would be placed on the hardest-hit areas from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. – which will remain in effect through December 23 (unless it gets extended).

Making matters worse, a low pressure system is moving towards Vanuatu in the coming days and will bring heavy rains to the reeling region. According to the Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, there is a 10-60% chance of the system turning into a full-fledged cyclone.

In a Facebook video, Vanuatu President Nikenike Vurobaravu warned that there was a risk of “cascading hazards” and told citizens to take particular care in the hardest hit areas and areas already impacted by landslides.

After Fog Forces 10-Hour Delay, Carnival Ship Having Late Night Departure

Following a lengthy delay that stretched into the early afternoon due to heavy fog, Carnival Paradise was finally able to enter Tampa Bay just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 19.

The ship had originally been scheduled to return to Port Tampa Bay at approximately 8 a.m., but was unable to enter the bay when heavy fog made visibility all but impossible.

This complicates navigation up the bay, and the US Coast Guard closed the channel until the fog cleared and marine traffic could safely resume.

Instead, Carnival Paradise spent the morning and early afternoon just outside Tampa Bay, first circling in a holding pattern and later just waiting for the fog to clear.

In the meantime, Carnival Cruise Line communicated to incoming guests about the delay, but was unable to offer a firm time for embarkation for the next sailing, a 4-night Western Caribbean sailing with a visit to Cozumel, Mexico.

Just after 2 p.m., the ship was able to begin her journey back toward the cruise terminal, which takes 3-4 hours, depending on the ship’s exact position and other local traffic. By 6 p.m., Carnival Paradise was able to dock as planned – 10 hours later than originally planned.

As the ship got underway, incoming guests were notified about their revised embarkation time and offered guidance about arriving at the cruise terminal, albeit much later than they may have liked.

“We know you are eager to get on board for the start of your weekend getaway. The day has been long, and we truly appreciate the patience and understanding you are showing during this weather-related delay,” the email notification read.

“The ship will be arriving early evening and we must allow debarking guests to leave the cruise terminal and parking facility before we can accommodate your arrival. We kindly ask for your cooperation with the revised schedule.”

The original cruise terminal arrival appointments that guests selected had ranged from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Due to the extensive delay, however, all appointments are now shifted significantly, with the first appointments not starting until 8 p.m.

All passengers must be checked in at the cruise terminal no later than 11 p.m. in preparation for departure. It is expected that the ship will depart shortly after embarkation is finished.

While this is a much later departure than expected, the first day of the sailing is a day at sea. It is common for cruise ships to sail more slowly during sea days to offer lower winds for outdoor deck activities. This makes it easy for the vessel to adjust her speed to compensate for the delay as she heads for Mexico.

“We expect to keep our visit to Cozumel as scheduled,” the email confirmed.

Carnival Paradise should be in Cozumel from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 21.

Onboard this evening, dinner will be offered as open seating – no assigned tables or times – in the main dining rooms as well as the Lido Marketplace buffet so all guests can enjoy a delicious meal. Announcements will be made when staterooms are ready for guests.

Compensation Offered for Lengthy Delay

Because of the loss of nearly the entire first day of the 4-night voyage, Carnival Cruise Line is offering all incoming guests a $25 on board credit that will be posted to individual Sail and Sign accounts. This covers the Thursday lunch that guests would otherwise have been able to enjoy onboard if embarkation had happened as scheduled.

Furthermore, a one-day, pro-rated refund of all pre-cruise packages will also be processed. This includes any pre-paid gratuities, drink packages, and Wi-Fi packages.

It should be noted that weather-related delays are outside the cruise line’s control and the company is not obligated to provide any credits for such difficulties. Most cruise lines, however, do offer some compensation to ease travelers’ frustration.

Fog-related delays are common in Tampa during the winter months, when air and water temperatures as well as high humidity quickly foster conditions for very thick fog. Fog can also be a challenge for the Port of Jacksonville, which also has a lengthy stretch of river ships that must carefully navigate to reach the cruise terminal.

Unfortunately, such delays are impossible to predict, particularly since cruisers often book their oceangoing getaways months if not years in advance.

To be prepared, travelers should always plan for any onward travel, such as flights, later in the day or even the next day if possible, or consider travel insurance that may help reimburse for delay-related expenses.

Carnival Cruise Line Says It Won’t Offer Popular Holiday Service

The holiday season is a crazy time, and many people are eager to take advantage of any assistance they can find with preparations – including gift wrapping services that can save time and hassle.

One cruise guest is upset, however, that such a service is not offered onboard Carnival ships during the holiday season, as they plan to bring gifts to exchange during their Christmas cruise.

The irate traveler reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, about the lack of such a convenience and what they think this indicates about Carnival’s level of service to its guests.

“Why does Carnival not offer a gift wrapping service? We are joining on the Vista for Christmas. I am told on good authority that Carnival does not have gift wrapping,” the guest wrote.

“Really John! I am not able to pack a few gifts already wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper so what is Carnival expecting me to do!!? … This is very disappointing and this is very poor service.”

Heald has been answering a variety of holiday-related questions in the past few weeks, from the ship’s seasonal decorating schedules to Christmas activities onboard to special dining menus and more.

This particular guest will be further disappointed to learn that a gift wrapping service is not available onboard. They can, however, still bring wrapped gifts to exchange on their cruise.

“I thought I would share this because while we do not have a gift wrapping service on the ship you can bring pre-wrapped gifts on board, that is not a concern,” Heald confirmed. “Please make sure you don’t wrap any toy weapon or anything that can could be mistaken for something like that but you can bring them wrapped.”

Carnival Vista is departing Port Canaveral on her Christmas cruise on Sunday, December 22, 2024. The 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary will be visiting Half Moon Cay on Christmas Eve, Grant Turk on Christmas Day, and Amber Cove on Boxing Day before return to Florida on December 28.

Cruising With Christmas Gifts

It should be noted that if passengers are flying to their cruise embarkation port, they will need to ensure any gifts they pack in their luggage comply with TSA and security guidelines.

As for wrapping, if gifts may be a security concern at either the airport or the cruise port, they will need to be unwrapped to be checked.

“We know that passengers will be traveling with gifts, and that’s okay,” the TSA has stated. “However, we strongly recommend that instead of wrapping gifts with paper and tape that the gifts be placed in gift bags or gift boxes with tissue paper. That way, if the item triggers an alarm, our officers can easily resolve the alarm without needing to unwrap the gift.”

Cruise guests who are driving to their ship can more easily bring along wrapped gifts, but gift bags are a more convenient and security-friendly wrapping option recommended by many experienced travelers.

“Bring gift bags and put them in. No scissors or tape needed.”

“Bring gift bags and some tissue paper in your suitcases. It will not add too much weight and put your gifts in those things.”

“Bring gift bags and tissue (leave them flat) and fix them when you get on board.”

Other travelers have different solutions for Christmas cruise gift exchanges. Many cruisers leave gifts at home and deal with presents either before or after their sailing. If they do want to exchange gifts onboard, they choose just 1-2 small gifts for the holiday tradition.

Now, if Carnival Cruise Line were to offer cruise-themed gift wrap, bags, and bows onboard for sale during the holiday season, that would make all the difference for a festive Christmas cruise!

An Outbreak Hits Cruise Passengers on Holland America Ship

An outbreak of norovirus has cast a shadow over the holiday plans of passengers aboard Holland America Line’s Rotterdam.

During its current voyage that began on December 8, 2024, and won’t conclude until December 20, 83 passengers and 12 crew members – 5 percent of the vessel’s total capacity – have fallen ill to the highly contagious virus.

Rotterdam, which departed on its 12-night roundtrip cruise from Fort Lauderdale, had been enjoying a warm-weather journey in the Caribbean ahead of the holidays with excited passengers visiting Curacao, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.

The 99,935-gross-ton vessel also transited through the Panama Canal and spent a day at the newly renamed and private RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay, jointly operated by Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line, both owned by Carnival Corporation.

While calling in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on December 18, the medical team aboard Rotterdam reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that it was experiencing an outbreak of suspected norovirus, sometimes referred to as a “stomach flu” or “stomach bug.”

Norovirus is “the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States,” according to the CDC.

It says symptoms of norovirus develop within 12 to 48 hours after being exposed and also include nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches.

The ship of 2,192 passengers and 953 crew is now under close observation by the CDC and Holland America Line has taken immediate steps to contain the outbreak by intensifying cleaning and disinfection procedures as outlined in its outbreak prevention and response plan.

Recurring Outbreaks

This is the second Holland America ship in a week to experience a norovirus outbreak, with the line’s 82,305-gross-ton Zuiderdam seeing nearly 80 passengers and crew members sick during a 10-night Caribbean voyage.

That cruise, which also departed from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on December 4, was reported to the CDC on December 11, with 74 of 1,923 passengers and four of the ship’s 757 crew members experiencing symptoms of norovirus.

Another outbreak took place aboard another Carnival Corporation vessel earlier in the month. Details of on outbreak aboard P&O Cruises’ Ventura were leaked to media from passengers on the ship on December 4, 2024.

The vessel had been completing a 12-night Canary Islands cruise that had departed from Southampton on November 23.

Unfortunately, the same ship, which carries up to 3,200 passengers, experienced an outbreak on multiple sailings between April and June, including a voyage that had more than 500 passengers falling ill.

In fact, Carnival Corporation was indicated in a lawsuit from 115 former passengers on November 15, 2024, cruise, alleging its cruise line was negligent in providing proper sanitation and communication during the outbreaks.

Once norovirus is found aboard a cruise ship, vessels implement strict measures to prevent further spread and manage an outbreak.

These include isolating affected passengers, limiting buffet service, health screenings, collaborating with health authorities, and conducting frequent disinfection in high-traffic and high-touch areas.

Once Rotterdam returns to port on December 20, it will likely be undergoing a further deep clean that could delay embarkation for its following itinerary, a 9-night Southern Caribbean adventure scheduled to depart at 3 p.m.

Multiple Incentives in Holland America’s Wave Season Offer

Holland America Line is wooing future guests with a Wave Season promotion that features a slew of value-added benefits on certain 2025 and 2026 cruises.

The “Start Your Journey Sale” launched on December 19, 2024 and continues to February 28, 2025, with an extra incentive for bookings made by January 31, 2025.

Perhaps the most impressive of the sale’s featured benefits is the line’s “Have It All” premium package, which covers shore excursions and specialty dining (both based on cruise length), a Signature Beverage Package, and a Wi-Fi Surf Package.

In addition, the sale includes a stateroom upgrade in select categories, reduced fares, free fares for children, and 50% reduced deposits. The early booking perk is an onboard credit of up to $400 per stateroom, based on cruise length.

Wave Season is an annual tradition during the first quarter of each year, when cruise lines roll out special campaigns to encourage early bookings.

Voyages included in Holland America’s Wave Season campaign span the globe and include itineraries to destinations from Alaska and the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, South Pacific, and even Antarctica.

With eligible cruises to nearly all our global destinations, it’s the perfect time for new guests to experience the best service at sea while giving loyal guests their favorite extras and great savings, said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line

Whether it’s taking advantage of the free or reduced kids cruise fares or getting a balcony upgrade on a dream Alaska cruise, now is the time to book a future Holland America Line vacation and experience the art of leisurely travel,Bodensteiner added.

In addition to cruises, all of the Wave Season benefits apply to the cruise line’s popular Alaska Cruisetours, which combine a voyage to Alaska with a land trip to Denali National Park and the Yukon.

These include, for example, 7-day “Alaska Explorer” and “Alaska Inside Passage” cruises, and a 14-day “Alaska, Denali & Yukon Cruisetour.”

For the 2025 Alaska season, Holland America Line is offering 17 cruisetours, pre- or post-cruise, with a choice of one to three nights in Denali National Park. Guests can add-on a land package to the Yukon, featuring visits to the historic gold-rush town of Dawson City and Whitehorse.

Four ships will sail cruisetours in Alaska during the upcoming 2025 season, including the 2,650-guest Koningsdam, the 2,527-guest Nieuw Amsterdam, the 1,924-guest Noordam, and the 1,432-guest Zaandam.

In other regions, the Wave Season deals are offered on 7-day Eastern Caribbean, Norwegian Fjord, and Canada/New England cruises, along with a 12-day Panama Canal sailing, and a 14-day Wild British Isles voyage, among others.

A Closer Look at the ‘Start Your Journey’ Perks

The cruise line’s Wave Season sale includes balcony upgrades, meaning that guests can book a balcony cabin for the price of an oceanview cabin, or upgrade to an oceanview from an inside stateroom.

The free children’s fare promotion applies to guests up to age 18 who travel as the third and fourth guests in a stateroom. The cruise fare is free, but the guest must still pay taxes, fees, and port charges.

The line is offering 50% reduced deposits for the first and second guests in the cabin.

The onboard credit, for guests who book by January 31, 2025, is $100 per person for cruises of 6 to 9 days; $150 per person for Alaska Cruisetours and cruises of 10 to 20 days; $200 per person on cruises of 21 days or longer; and $250 per person for those booking Legendary Voyages.

The credits can be used for spa treatments, dining, shore tours, retail purchases onboard, and other services.

Florida-Based Carnival Cruise Ship Delayed Due to Fog

Guests aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Paradise are getting a slightly longer cruise vacation than they anticipated, as the vessel is now delayed in returning to Port Tampa Bay due to heavy fog.

The weather conditions have made it impossible for the vessel to enter Tampa Bay on schedule, and instead, Carnival Paradise is holding position outside the bay as she waits for the fog to clear.

“Due to heavy fog, the arrival of the Carnival Paradise has been delayed. The decision to delay the arrival was made in an abundance of caution by the U.S. Coast Guard, due to low visibility in the area,” a statement from Port Tampa Bay reads.

The ship is returning from a 5-night Western Caribbean sailing that departed Florida on December 14, with visits to Roatan and Cozumel.

Typically, when a cruise ship returns to a homeport, the vessel would dock in the early morning hours around 5-6 a.m. This permits ample time for the ship to be secured and cleared through customs and immigration, and for debarkation to begin from 7-8 a.m.

At this time, there is no confirmed time for Carnival Paradise to arrive back at the cruise terminal. Once the ship is able to enter Tampa Bay, it takes approximately three hours to navigate to the terminal and dock successfully.

Guests scheduled to board Carnival Paradise today to begin the next sailing – a 4-night itinerary to Cozumel, Mexico – have been alerted to the delay and advised to sign up for text alerts for updates as the situation changes.

Furthermore, incoming guests will need to delay their arrival to the cruise terminal in order to ensure a smooth debarkation. Time will also be needed for debarking guests to exit the cruise terminal and adjacent parking structures before arriving travelers can easily be accommodated.

Any onboard credit or other compensation for the delay will be determined once the situation has resolved, depending on when the vessel is able to dock and welcome her next guests.

Cruise travelers should never expect compensation for events outside the cruise line’s control, such as weather-related delays, but most cruise lines do try to offer some goodwill gestures whenever possible.

Carnival Paradise is the only ship scheduled to return to Port Tampa Bay on Thursday, though fog can impact the port on any day. The winter months are especially prone to heavy fog and such delays are not uncommon.

The 71,925-gross-ton, Fantasy class Carnival Paradise can welcome 2,124 travelers at double occupancy or up to 2,697 guests when fully booked. During the holiday season, the ship is undoubtedly sailing close to full capacity.

What Happens Onboard During Delays

While incoming cruise travelers may now be deciding what to do in Tampa as they await Carnival Paradise‘s arrival for their voyage to begin, the experience onboard the ship is somewhat different.

Despite the delay, all onboard operations remain fully functional and the Fun Squad and cruise director will be arranging some additional activities to entertain guests. Meals will also continue as scheduled.

Depending on the length of the delay, free internet access may be offered to all guests to facilitate changing travel plans, airline reservations, or contacting family members and friends about the situation.

Passengers will be asked to vacate their staterooms once the ship’s arrival time to the cruise terminal is better known, and waiting areas in various lounges and public spaces will be available. This will give the housekeeping teams time to clean and refresh staterooms in anticipation of embarking guests.

While it can be frustrating to experience such a delay, the ship’s crew makes every effort to ensure everyone aboard still enjoys their (extra) time aboard, however long it may be.

Carnival Website Glitch Continues to Affect Pre-Cruise Purchases

It’s been a rough week for guests trying to book their next Carnival cruise and onboard amenities.

On Saturday, December 14, 2024, guests were not able to access the Carnival Cruise Line website or the HUB app due to “technical maintenance updates” that went on for much longer than anticipated.

The maintenance was supposed to be completed overnight – with the website back online by 6 a.m. EST on December 14. However, the outage lasted well into the afternoon.

This prevented guests from booking new sailings, making payments toward their cruise, pre-booking amenities, and completing their online check-in, which was particularly worrisome for guests embarking on their sailings in the next few days.

But while the website is back online, future guests are still unable to use their onboard credits (OBC) to pre-book amenities to use onboard – which includes things like internet packages and the popular Cheers! Drink Package.

While onboard credits issued during Carnival sailings don’t typically carry over to the next voyage, certain booking promotions come with onboard credits – which guests can put towards onboard amenities and experiences prior to embarking.

According to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald, Carnival is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.

“My sincere apologies again for the delay in the ability for you to use the OBC for pre cruise purchases. I don’t have any news yet but I promise the Beards are working very hard to get this repaired on our website. Many of you who have written to me have vented your frustration as this has been like this for a week or more,” Heald posted on his public Facebook page.

That said, there is no estimate as to when the onboard credits will be available again for advance purchases as of the time of publication.

Most in the comments section concurred that this service was still unavailable to them – with the exception of one gentleman who said his onboard credits became usable again as of December 18.

Immediate Sailings to Honor Pre-Cruise Pricing

Guests who wait to use their onboard credits until they are onboard their ship won’t miss out. As the name suggests, these credits can be used during the cruise and are good for the duration of the sailing.

The bigger issue at hand is that pre-purchasing amenities – including the internet and Cheers! Drink package – comes with discounts as an incentive to buy them early.

Naturally, guests would like to stretch their onboard credits as far as possible – and would rather put them toward the discounted prices than the more expensive onboard prices.

That said, Heald announced that Carnival would be honoring the pre-cruise prices onboard for at least the Cheers! Package for guests setting sail in the next few days who weren’t able to pre-purchase with their onboard credits.

“Can I remind those sailing today or over the next few days that if you have been unable to use your OBC for the Cheers pre cruise price, or indeed your Gift Card then you can use this once on board the ship and purchase it at the pre cruise price as well,” said Heald.

The brand ambassador promised to follow up with any updates – and hopefully good news – soon.

While it’s understandably frustrating when things don’t work as they should, sometimes glitches happen – especially on a massive and constantly-evolving website like Carnival’s.

Even as recently as just about six months ago, Carnival had to repair another glitch on its website that made the timing for online check-in confusing due to time zone issues.
