Unruly Passenger Passes Away on Royal Caribbean Ship

Just hours after being subdued and detained by the cruise ship security team following an enraged outburst, the unruly guest reported aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas has died.

The news comes from a relative of the man, who has been identified as 35-year-old Michael Virgil. A thorough investigation is sure to be underway of the incident, and all steps will be taken to protect the privacy of everyone involved.

No information has been confirmed about the cause of death, including whether or not alcohol or any illegal substances may have contributed to Virgil’s passing. He leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old son who were also aboard the cruise.

Royal Caribbean has confirmed the death in a statement and is offering help to the man’s family.

“We are saddened by the passing of one of our guests. We offered support to the family and are working with authorities on their investigation,” the statement read.

The initial outburst was filmed by Christifer Mikhail, who found himself in the same corridor as Virgil was kicking at a doorway, yelling profanity, and physically assaulting crew members.

The incident happened shortly after Navigator of the Seas departed Los Angeles, California on Friday, December 13, 2024. The ship was on a 3-night sailing to Ensenada, Mexico.

Security team members quickly responded to Virgil’s outburst, ultimately subduing him with pepper spray, zip ties, and handcuffs. He was then taken to the ship’s brig.

Family members have claimed that Virgil was injected with a sedative by security, hours before his passing. This is unconfirmed but sure to be thoroughly investigated to determine the official cause of death.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the entire incident, as it occurred in international waters. Mikhail has been interviewed repeatedly, and interviews are also being conducted with other passengers from the cruise as well as crew members.

“I just want to give my condolences to the family,” Mikhail said in a follow up interview with Fox 11 News. “Nobody deserves to die, especially like that. May he rest in peace.”

Many Questions Remain

At this time, there are still many questions about what caused Virgil’s unruly behavior, particularly so soon after the cruise ship set sail.

While it may seem that alcohol was a key factor in the incident, cruise ship bartenders do monitor guests’ intake and will refuse to serve any passenger who appears to be severely intoxicated.

Because the incident happened shortly after Navigator of the Seas departed Los Angeles, it seems unlikely that Virgil would have consumed enough alcohol onboard to instigate such behavior. Family members have said his behavior was not typical.

The 140,000-gross-ton, Voyager class ship continued on its sailing without any delay or deviation. The cruise returned to Los Angeles on Monday, December 16, and has since set sail on its next voyage, a 4-night sailing with visits to Catalina Island and Ensenada.

Deaths are not common aboard cruise ships, but they do happen. In September 2024, a 12-year-old boy died aboard Harmony of the Seas after falling from a balcony into the ship’s Central Park atrium.

In February 2023, a suspicious death occurred aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunshine during a cruise to the Bahamas, and authorities initiated appropriate investigations at that time.

Guests may also pass from medical emergencies or due to deliberate intent. Regardless of the circumstances, such incidents are naturally upsetting and heartbreaking for travel companions, family members, and friends, as well as each ship’s crew members.

Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with Virgil’s family and friends at this troubling time.

Princess Cruise Ship Will Have Delayed Embarkation for Disinfection

Sapphire Princess will be kicking off her next sailing – a 17-night voyage to Antarctica – on December 18, 2024. However, the planned embarkation in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has now been delayed.

This change became necessary due to reported gastrointestinal illness on the Gem-class vessel’s current voyage – which is another 17-night sailing to Antarctica – although it is unclear how many of her up to 2,670 guests and 1,100 crew members have become sick.

Before new passengers are brought onboard on December 18, the crew members will spend extra time sanitizing and disinfecting the ship to prevent any further spread of illness on the subsequent sailing.

“Please be advised that there will be a slight delay in the embarkation process for your upcoming Sapphire Princess cruise on Wednesday, December 18,” Princess Cruises wrote in a letter to booked guests.

“Our crew will be spending extra time disinfecting the ship in Buenos Aires that day following reported cases of gastrointestinal illness among guests on the current voyage,” continued the notice.

As a result, guests have been asked not to arrive at the cruise terminal until 1:30 p.m. at the earliest – with staterooms not available until later on in the afternoon. However, all guests must be onboard by 5:30 p.m. local time.

“Guests will be permitted to check in beginning at 1:30 PM, and staterooms will be available later in the afternoon. Please do not arrive before 1:30 PM as the terminal will be closed with limited shelter in surrounding areas. Guests with Princess hotels or transfers will have their new pick-up times provided at the hotel or airport,” the Carnival-owned cruise line added.

All that said, the delay shouldn’t impact the itinerary – as the 116,000-gross ton ship actually isn’t scheduled to depart from Buenos Aires until 4 p.m. local time on the following day (December 19) anyway.

Her polar itinerary includes calls on Punta Arenas, Chile; Ushuaia, Argentina; Port Stanley, Falkland Islands; and Montevideo, Uruguay.

How Bad is the Outbreak?

Although the number of gastrointestinal cases onboard Sapphire Princess’ current Antarctic cruise is unknown, it’s important to note that the medical event has not been classified as an outbreak – at least not as of the time of publication.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) runs a vessel sanitation program (VSP) where they monitor and report outbreaks from cruise ships where 3% or more of the passengers or crew report gastrointestinal symptoms to the onboard medical staff – as well as other noteworthy medical events or outbreaks.

This includes all ships under VSP jurisdiction – which applies to Sapphire Princess – even when they are sailing outside of the US (as is the case here).

As of December 17, 2024, Sapphire Princess is not on the list of outbreaks reported in 2024 – which means the number of gastrointestinal cases onboard is likely low and the enhanced cleaning is out of an abundance of caution.

The ship’s April 5, 2024, voyage is listed as having a norovirus outbreak – but that has since been resolved and is a separate incident.

But as it is the cold and flu season, it may seem like people everywhere are getting sick more frequently – including on cruise ships.

In the past week alone, gastrointestinal outbreaks have been reported for both Ruby Princess and Holland America Lina’s Zuiderdam – which is a sister-brand of Princess Cruises.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Provides Aid to Stranded Fishermen

Harmony of the Seas’ current sailing has been nothing if not eventful.

First, embarkation in Galveston, Texas, on December 15, 2024, was delayed by more than eight hours – coming as a result of the 6,687-guest ship going out of her way to medically evacuate an elderly guest at the end of the previous voyage.

On December 17, just two days into the current 7-night Western Caribbean sailing, the Oasis-class vessel came to the rescue for four stranded fishermen while sailing off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico.

According to current passengers who witnessed the rescue, the fishermen became stranded due to a mechanical issue – and no one onboard the smaller vessel required medical attention.

The fishermen didn’t want to leave their boat behind, so crew members provided them with provisions and a radio – and made sure Mexican authorities were on their way to further assist the stranded group before sailing on.

“I’m on board. There were 4 fishermen that had a mechanical. Captain said that none needed medical attention, didn’t want to leave their boat, so we left provisions and a radio and ensured Mexican authorities were en route and monitoring them and they released us from the scene to continue our voyage,” one witness shared.

Had the fishermen wanted to come aboard, Royal Caribbean would have provided them with any necessary medical attention, sustenance, and lodging before most likely dropping them off at the next port of call – which in this case, is on Roatan, Honduras, on December 18.

With the 226,963-gross ton vessel already sailing again at speeds of 19 knots per hour (about 22 mph) – and considering the rescue didn’t take her off course – it’s very unlikely that the unplanned stop will lead to any significant delays or itinerary changes.

After Roatan, the Royal Caribbean ship is scheduled to call on Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico, on December 19 and 20, respectively.

The cruise line has not released any official statements about Harmony’s heroic efforts as of the time of publication.

A Heroic Year for Harmony of the Seas

Harmony of the Seas is ending 2024 in the same way she began the year: with a heroic rescue.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the ship also stopped during another 7-night Western Caribbean sailing to rescue six fishermen and their dog

The small fishing vessel, named Aris, has experienced an engine failure over the weekend, before losing communication abilities. The mega-cruise ship happened to find them two days after they had been reported lost.

Thankfully, all seven castaways (including the dog, named Canelo) were found to be in reasonably good health considering what they had endured.

Rescue teams brought them onboard, where they were provided with food, water, and medical attention, before being transferred to the Mexican Navy. It was then up to the authorities to transport the group home to their families in Cozumel, Mexico.

Later in the year, there was another heroic rescue performed by a passenger onboard Harmony of the Seas.

In early October, Rory Foy dove into action during a port call in Roatan, Honduras, after witnessing a passenger fall overboard from another cruise ship that was docking in the port.

Luckily for that guest, Foy is an Irish Firefighter and Paramedic. The trained first-responder leaped into the water to bring the distressed person a life ring and help them swim to safety.

It’s unclear what cruise ship the guest fell from – but what really matters in the end is that everyone was okay.

Tails of the Seas Will Be Name of Much Anticipated Dog Cruise

Following an enthusiastic contest with a pack of creative submissions, the official name of the world’s first-ever dog-friendly cruise has been chosen. In November 2025, travelers and their canine companions will embark on the first “Tails of the Seas” sailing!

The naming contest was held as a way to encourage further engagement and interest in the unique cruise opportunity aboard Margaritaville Islander, the flagship of the small cruise line Margaritaville At Sea.

The name “Tails of the Seas” was submitted by Shawn Loomis, who has won a human-only cruise for two courtesy of Margaritaville at Sea.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in the cruise naming competition. It was amazing to see such enthusiastic participation from our community, and we appreciate all of the creative names shared,” said Steve Matzke, Cruise Tails Captain.

“We will be opening more contest opportunities and are excited to give our community more chances to sail!”

The prize cruise will not be aboard the Tails of the Seas sailing, owing to the special nature of the voyage and the unique logistics involved in bringing dogs onboard.

Applications are still open for pet owners hoping to set sail with their privileged pooches, though the first round of cabin applications have already been filled. The second round still has limited availability and interested passengers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible while spaces remain open.

No more than 250 total dogs will be permitted on this first-of-its-kind cruise. All eligible dogs must weigh less than 20 pounds and be under 18 inches in height. All dogs must also be up-to-date on vaccinations and have health certificates from their veterinarians.

“This is the first pet cruise ever, because until now everyone thought it was impossible. To ensure success, everything has been planned with an abundance of caution and safety,” the cruise’s FAQ reads.

A $500 per-passenger and $250 per-dog deposit is due when prospective travelers apply for the sailing, but will be fully refunded if the guest is not selected to join the cruise.

Dog-Friendly Itinerary Confirmed

The canine cruise will depart on November 18, 2025 from Port Tampa Bay. The 6-night sailing has only recently had its itinerary confirmed as visiting Key West, Florida as well as Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico.

This is a typical 6-night itinerary for Margaritaville Islander. The organizing travel agency for the full-ship charter, however, took extra care to ensure that all ports of call are welcoming to the dogs onboard.

Pet owners will still be responsible to ensure their dogs meet all necessary requirements for sailing and visiting the ports if desired.

Prior to setting sail, “pre-boarding events” are also being planned for this very exciting cruise, which has already attracted the attention of online pet influencers, celebrities, and dog-friendly brands.

Extensive marketing and promotion is expected to be a part of this cruise, and sponsorship and exhibitor applications are also being accepted. All travelers will need to sign a media waiver before sailing.

This first Tails of the Seas voyage is sure to be setting the standard by which future dog-friendly cruises may – or may not – happen, and every precaution possible is being taken to ensure success so additional voyages can be planned.

If this sailing is as bark-tastically fun as hoped, a second Tails of the Seas cruise will potentially happen in spring 2026, sometime between March and May, depending on ship bookings and arrangements. At this time, no confirmations of future sailings have yet been made.

Overboard Situation Developing on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

A beautiful sea day aboard the 78,340-gross-ton Vision of the Seas by Royal Caribbean has turned into a nightmare as passengers aboard have reported a code OSCAR in progress.

At approximately 1 p.m. EST on December 17, 2024, the vessel began turning around as the alert went out across the ship. Code OSCAR, repeated three times, means a person has fallen overboard.

“Currently on the Vision in a man overboard situation for the last hour and 45 minutes,” a guest aboard the ship shared on a public Vision of the Seas Facebook page. “Very sad. Rescue boat is out looking.”

Another passenger shared a photo of the rescue team searching the seas in small orange rescue boats while another said officials on the ship said they will “stay and search for at least 5 hours.”

Cruise Hive’s ship tracker shows the ship was at sea in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Bahamas and southwest of Bermuda, when the vessel did a U-turn.

On the tail end of a 12-night Southern Caribbean cruise that had departed from Baltimore on December 7, 2024, the 2,514-guest Vision of the Seas was on the second of three final sea days.

The ship had three earlier sea days en route to the Caribbean, where it called in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands; Philipsburg; St. Maarten; Castries, St. Lucia; Roseau, Dominica; and Basseterre, St. Kitts on the roundtrip itinerary.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) conducts search and rescue assistance in coordination with the US Coast Guard in the Bahamas, while Bermuda Maritime Operations handles Bermuda rescues, but it is not known at this time if additional rescue teams have been called and from which region

Rescue teams have the ability to send search-and-rescue aircraft to help located a person from a higher vantage point.

Recent Overboard Incidents

There has been a wave of passengers overboard on cruise ships in 2024. Earlier in the month, a 72-year-old male guest aboard Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess went missing somewhere before the ship returned to port on December 2, 2024.

Although the passenger had not been reported missing until the morning of the cruise’s end, the incident may have taken place in international waters and is under investigation with US Customs and Border Protection.

In October, a firefighter vacationing on a voyage in the Caribbean came to the rescue of another passenger who fell overboard during a call in Roatan, Honduras.

As an unidentified Royal Caribbean ship was in port on a 7-night journey from Galveston, Texas, the firefighter’s quick actions helped saved the life of the also unidentified passenger.

Sadly, a guest passed away after falling overboard during an MSC Cruise in June. The cruise line’s MSC Euribia was sailing off the coast of Norway in frigid waters when the man, reported to be in his late 50s, went overboard and was pulled from the water by rescue teams that included a helicopter and an air ambulance, as well as civilian boats, a fire boat, and an ambulance boat.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, known as SOLAS, provides procedures for emergencies, including how to conduct quick and effective responses.

Passengers on Vision of the Seas are unfortunately learning first-hand how rescues are conducted, beginning with an immediate alert and alarm, followed by the need to return the vessel to the scene of the incident to begin rescue operations.

This is the second time in less than a year that the vessel has experienced a passenger overboard. Last December 23, 2023, a 41-year-old male passenger went overboard off the coast of Charleston. He was never recovered.

Major Earthquake Rocks Vanuatu, Cruise Ship Visits in Jeopardy

0

Port Vila, the capital of the island nation of Vanuatu, was struck by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake during the afternoon of December 17, 2024, causing widespread destruction.

The quake, occurring 19 miles from the port at 12:47 p.m. local time, has been followed by a series of aftershocks, including multiple 5.5-, 5.4- and 5.1-magnitudes, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Thankfully, a tsunami warning has been cleared.

Although authorities are still assessing the scale of the damage, reports from the Pacific Island nation say the earthquake has heavily impacted critical infrastructure, including government buildings housing the US, UK, New Zealand, and French Embassies.

Port facilities are also said to have experienced damage. A video shared on X by Dan McGarry shows landslides near the shipping terminal, isolating the area and burying part of the wharf.

Caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai declared a state of emergency for Vila and announced a curfew would be placed on the hardest-hit areas from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for seven days.

Additionally, Port Vila’s international airport has been closed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has staff on the ground and is working with the Ministry of Health and Vila Central Hospital to aid in health response. Fourteen fatalities have been reported and more than 200 injuries.

Cruise Line Alters Call

Vanuatu is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of about 83 volcanic islands spread across 800 miles. Port Vila, located on Efate Island, is one of the larger and more central islands and serves as the nation’s hub for government and tourism.

Royal Caribbean, a frequent visitor to Vanuatu that is also said to be adding its own private destination Perfect Day at Lelepa, currently has a vessel in the area.

The 168,666-gross-ton Quantum of the Seas is the only passenger ship in Vanuatu and was calling on the smaller Mystery Island when the earthquake occurred.

Located about 390 miles south of Port Vila, the secluded island does not have any residents and instead serves as a beach and snorkel stop for cruise ships.

Guests onboard the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas posted on social media that some felt light tremors, but others didn’t notice.

“My daughter was asleep and didn’t even know about the earthquake,” said one.

However, the vessel was scheduled to visit Port Vila on December 18, 2024, and passengers have reported they have been told they will return to Mystery Island instead.

The next ship scheduled to stop at Port Vila is P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Encounter on December 21, followed by its Pacific Adventure on December 22.

Silversea and Cunard both have vessels scheduled to arrive later in the month, with Cunard saying, it is “actively evaluating the situation and remain in close contact with local authorities. We will provide updates as more information becomes available, and will advise our guests and travel advisors as soon as we are able to.”

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the earthquake that has struck Vanuatu, and our thoughts are with all those affected,” said the cruise line.

Also scheduled to arrive during the 7-day state-of-emergency period are Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Luminosa and a return call for Quantum of the Seas on December 23 and 24, respectively.

Passengers are advised to keep an eye on itinerary changes as cruise lines assess the situation and make changes accordingly.

Royal Caribbean Guest Attempts to Break Down Door on Navigator of the Seas

Weekend cruises can have a notorious reputation as rowdier, more energetic sailings as passengers enjoy their limited time onboard, but on a weekend Royal Caribbean sailing, one passenger went way too far with their rowdy energy.

The incident happened aboard the December 13, 2024 sailing of Navigator of the Seas. The ship is homeported from Los Angeles and the 3-night cruise was visiting Ensenada, Mexico.

Just hours after leaving Los Angeles, however, one passenger appears to have become so intoxicated that their behavior grew out of control, threatening both crew members and other guests.

Footage posted by Fox 11 News shows the male guest, who has not been identified, kicking at a door, yelling profanity, and at some point, removing his shirt.

Another guest, Christifer Mikhail, was on his first ever cruise vacation to celebrate birthdays and his wedding anniversary with his wife and a group of family members and friends when he witnessed the erratic behavior.

“I was kind of scared,” Mikhail said. “I’m stuck in this hallway, everybody else is kind of like behind something.”

Mikhail noted that the unruly guest had kicked one crew member with steel-toed boots, as well as punched another crew member.

In short order, the ship’s security team arrived to subdue the guest with pepper spray, zip ties, and handcuffs. The man likely spent the rest of the 3-night cruise in the ship’s brig.

There has been no confirmation about what further action may be taken against the unruly guest, though criminal charges could be filed. Mikhail did speak with the ship’s security and Royal Caribbean management as well as FBI agents about the incident.

Similarly, there is no information available about why the guest’s behavior so quickly became erratic and unruly, or whether or not excess alcohol or other substances may have been involved.

Cruise Hive reached out to Royal Caribbean for a statement, but has not received one at the time of this writing.

This recent incident follows another onboard disruption from Icon of the Seas which involved multiple guests also yelling and interacting with ship’s security and other crew members.

The 140,000-gross-ton, Voyager class Navigator of the Seas can welcome 3,386 travelers at double occupancy, or up to 4,000 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are approximately 1,200 international crew members.

The ship is homeported year-round from Los Angeles offering a range of 3-, 4-, and 7-night Mexico cruise itineraries to destinations such as Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. The ship’s 4-night cruises also visit Catalina Island.

What Happens to Unruly Guests?

Cruise lines will commonly ban guests who cause such disturbances or threaten crew members, and it is likely that this particular man will be unable to set sail aboard any Royal Caribbean ship in the future.

The restriction may also extend to his traveling companions, depending on the circumstances that ultimately led to his poor behavior. For example, if other travelers were supplying him with additional drinks or encouraging his actions, they could likewise be held accountable and subject to penalties.

Royal Caribbean does have a Guest Health, Safety, and Conduct Policy that explicitly states that travelers must follow appropriate standards during their cruise vacation.

“Verbally abusive or offensive language directed toward anyone, including guests, crew members, governmental officials, or others is not permitted,” the policy reads. “Statements or conduct that threaten prohibited or illegal activity are forbidden.”

When a guest violates the policy, different actions may be taken. This includes security intervention, reporting the guest’s actions to law enforcement, suspending loyalty benefits, removing the guest from the ship, and potentially denying future cruises throughout the entire Royal Caribbean Group.

This would include any sailings not just aboard Royal Caribbean ships, but also Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

Celebrity Cruises’ Ship Rescues Lone Sailor From Damaged Boat

The captain and crew of Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Reflection rescued a lone sailor from a dinghy about 40 miles from Cuba. The sailor had abandoned what appeared to be a capsized catamaran.

The 3,000-guest Celebrity Reflection was on the second day of her 6-night Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale when the incident happened at about 11 a.m. on December 16, 2024.

The ship was bound for her first port of call, Cozumel, Mexico, when the ship’s officers received an emergency distress signal. Guests, who had spotted the man in a small boat, saw that he had sent up at least one flare.

Celebrity Reflection diverted to the location of the distress signal and dispatched a rescue vessel to try to reach the sailor. Big swells and high winds hampered efforts, video of the rescue shows, and the operation took about an hour to complete.

The wife and I were on the balcony when we came by the first time and saw him shouting. His first flare went into the water then he shot off the second right in front of our eyes. Glad he was safe,” one guest posted on Reddit

It got harrowing at moments when he lost his kayak and he got into his little plastic boat and just seemed so exhausted,” the guest added.

Crew members finally reached the sailor, who was safely brought onboard the Solstice-class ship exhausted but seemingly not injured. It was not known how long the sailor had been foundering at sea.

A crew member onboard the Celebrity Cruises ship with the Facebook page named Khing At Sea also captured the rescue unfold:

One guest posted his reaction to the scene that unfolded before his eyes.

When I tell you I never thought I would see a rescue at sea lol. Right in front of my cabin too. 40 miles off the coast of Havana Cuba. Our Captain and his crew saved a man this morning!!  What a great day!!!” the guest wrote on Facebook.

The sailor was expected to disembark the ship when it called at Cozumel on December 17, 2024. The ship will continue on to Grand Cayman and Bimini before returning to Fort Lauderdale. No changes to Celebrity Reflection’s itinerary were made as a result of the rescue.

Another Ship Rendered Aid at Sea on the Same Day

The Celebrity Reflection incident was the second time in a day that a cruise ship came to the rescue of sailors in distress. On December 16, 2024, Costa Cruises’ Costa Fascinosa came to the aid of a stranded sailing yacht that had run out of fuel.

Both ships were sailing transatlantic voyages. The yacht was headed to St. Martin from the Canary Islands when it experienced a mechanical failure that impacted her ability to sail. The yacht needed more fuel to complete the crossing, and the Costa Cruises’ ship obliged by refueling the sailing vessel.

After the transfer, both ships continued on their journeys. Another transatlantic rescue happened a few weeks earlier, in November 2024, when Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas came to the aid of a family and their dog off the coast of Morocco.

The family’s sailboat lost engine power and its masts. All those aboard were transferred to Voyager of the Seas.

Under International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) rules, all vessels are required to assist those in distress at sea. Cruise ships routinely help stranded and foundering boats, and those with refugees onboard.

Popular Loyalty Gift Running Out for Carnival Cruise Line

As the end of 2024 approaches, eager Carnival Cruise Line guests who have reached the Platinum level of the cruise line’s loyalty program have just a few days left to collect the wildly popular VIFP pins to commemorate their voyages.

These pins are customized with each ship’s name and the year of the sailing, making them fun collectibles that showcase a guest’s individual sailings.

Yet on at least one Carnival cruise ship, some loyal guests are disappointed as they are unable to collect the appropriate pin for their VIFP status.

The issue has been noted aboard Carnival Liberty, currently homeported from New Orleans, Louisiana. Multiple guests have recently reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, about the missing gifts.

“I’m currently on the Liberty and become Platinum on this cruise. I went to get my Platinum pin and was told ‘Sorry, it’s the end of the year, all we have are gold pins,'” one guest explained.

The shortage has been going on at least since the beginning of December, as another guest also contacted Heald with their disappointment.

“Just returned from our first Platinum cruise. Was a 14 Panama aboard the Liberty,” the guest said. “Was very disappointed that they had none of the Platinum pins to give out with the ship name.”

Carnival Liberty‘s most recent Panama Canal sailing departed New Orleans on December 1, 2024. The ship is currently sailing a 7-night Western Caribbean voyage that departed on Sunday, December 15, and will visit Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel.

It should be noted that the Gold VIFP pins, while the same size and general style as those offered to Platinum and Diamond passengers, do not have the name of individual vessels. This makes them less desirable as a collectible, and of course they are also gold rather than silver.

Heald responds to hundreds of guest questions and comments nearly every day through his Facebook page, where nearly 600,000 followers eagerly await his insights and assistance.

He did note the lack of Platinum pins at the end of the year and explained how he will endeavor to help the impacted guests.

“It is unacceptable and I’m so sorry that this has made such a negative impact on your cruise,” he said. “I will check with the ship and see what they can do for you and if not, we will send one to your home address.”

Because the VIFP pins are customized with each year, it is understandable that Carnival Cruise Line might only order a limited amount of the gifts so there are none left that would be wasted as 2025 arrives.

It would be necessary to estimate how many pins might be needed, but if more Platinum level guests travel than expected, the pins could easily run out toward the end of the year.

This could be especially true on vessels offering longer Carnival Journeys sailings, such as Carnival Liberty‘s Panama Canal voyages. These are tremendously popular cruises with the cruise line’s most loyal guests, meaning more VIFP passengers aboard and more gifts claimed.

Furthermore, as more and more guests reach the higher levels of loyalty status, more and more pins would be needed to recognize that achievement, and quantities are always limited.

Claiming VIFP Pins

When guests reach the loyalty status that offers a pin or other loyalty gift, they must visit the Pixels photo gallery onboard each ship to collect the gift.

VIFP travelers are urged to claim their gifts early in their sailings just to ensure that the items are available and have not run out. Guests must show their Sail and Sign cards when they collect their gifts, and their names are checked off a list so no one can get “extra” gifts.

The pins are always popular for guests to claim, and many Gold, Platinum, and Diamond level VIFP travelers display them on hats, bags, vests, or jackets when they attend VIFP events.

Of course, if guests prefer not to claim the gifts – such as the baseball cap that is currently on offer and somewhat controversial – they do not need to do so.
