First Time Cruiser Tries Out Margaritaville at Sea’s Paradise

First cruise ever or the worst cruise ever? For one YouTuber, it was supposed to be both. 

While the usually low prices on Margaritaville at Sea sailings are tempting, overwhelmingly negative reviews are raising serious questions if it is even worth the trip.

Guests have frequently reported issues with the drink packages, getting overcharged for various reasons, and just an all around lack of communication from the crew members.

After seeing a wide range of different comments online, content creator Tonio Guajardo decided to set the record straight by taking his first ever cruise on Margaritaville at Sea’s Paradise.

He booked the cheapest cruise he could find, which was a $49 per-person room for a 2-night round-trip cruise out of Florida’s Port of Palm Beach.

The 1,680-guest vessel currently offers 2, 3, and 4-night cruises to Key West and the Bahamas – and Guajardo did the 2-night Grand Bahama Getaway itinerary, which makes one stop in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Once onboard, Guajardo rated his experience using the four common criteria used in cruise reviews: the room, activities, food, and excursions – and the 34-year-old ship was better than he was expecting.

Beginning with his interior cabin, Guajardo, who is on the tall side at 6’1″, boasted about how spacious it was – noting that the room had a large bed, a desk, and even an extra pull-down bunk bed.

Despite the lack of a window, he thought the room was a great deal for what he paid.

Moving onto the food, the creator tried out the ship’s complimentary buffet – with the lackluster options leaving something to be desired.

Guajardo quickly left the buffet and went to Frank & Lola’s Pizzeria for dinner. While it is an extra cost, he did seem to enjoy the food more than at the buffet. 

On his second night, he tried the ship’s JWB Steakhouse, which actually has good reviews compared to the ship’s complimentary dining options. In Guajardo words, “This dinner lived up to the hype.” 

The highlight of the trip was the excursion to a private island with the cute – but sometimes dangerous – Bahamian pigs.

This place is officially one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to,” Guajardo said, adding, “I’ve been very impressed.” 

Ultimately, the 52,925-gross ton ship made a good impression – except when it came to the entertainment.

The YouTuber noted that it was not really his taste, but felt the entertainment on a 2-night cruise was not as important as things like the cabin and the excursions.

Does Margaritaville at Sea Deserve the Negativity?

Over time, the two ships that now make up the Margaritaville at Sea fleet have been passed around by various cruise lines.

Both were originally built for Costa Cruises but were sold multiple times before becoming part of Margaritaville at Sea.

Paradise came first in 2022, followed by Islander in 2024 – and it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

Paradise, which launched in 1991, failed a surprise CDC health inspection in May of 2024, scoring an 83 – with 86 and above being a passing score.

The reasons for this score included overcrowding, poor sanitation practices, and food safety concerns. However the cruise live moved fast to make sure many of the aspects were corrected.

But good news if you are planning a trip aboard Paradise – it is set to be upgraded by March of 2025. The renovations are targeted at improving all dining areas, cocktail experiences, and entertainment.

Many of Guajardo’s subscribers appreciated the honesty of his video – seeing it as a nice contrast to other reviews online.

“No hate on cruise ship channels, but it’s a bit refreshing seeing someone who never been on a cruise ship to review this ship instead of the usual whose been on others. Kind of puts a nice different perspective, more for those on budgets and who are looking for a first cruise themselves,” one viewer shared.

“So refreshing to see a reviewer with an open mind and realistic expectations, too many people out there want the top tier experience but pay the minimum and then complain,” another viewer added.

For a reasonably priced escape, Margaritaville at Sea offers an easy route to the Bahamas for guests with the right mindset.

But do keep in mind that the extreme savings come with trade-offs – expect a simpler experience than a top-tier cruise line.

Cruise Director Offers Tips for Riding Carnival’s Roller Coaster

BOLT is the first ever roller coaster at sea  – and Carnival Cruise Director Kyndall “Fire” Magyar is doing her best to make sure guests don’t miss out on the chance to ride.

The sea coaster first debuted on Mardi Gras in 2021, but can now be found on Carnival Celebration (2022) and Carnival Jubilee (2023) – which is Carnival’s newest ship and Magyar’s current home. 

As one of the most popular and exciting innovations for thrill seekers at sea, there is obviously a lot of demand for cruisers lucky enough to sail on a ship with this attraction. 

That said, it’s also easy for cruise guests who haven’t done their research to miss out on the opportunity – which is why Ms. Kyndall Fire posted her top tips in a recent Facebook reel. 

Her first tip was to book early – before reservations run out and with time to rebook if poor weather leads to cancellations

The ride cannot operate in heavy winds or if lightning is present – and rain is evaluated on a case by case basis. 

“Definitely book as soon as you board. We got cancelled 3 times due to wind and finally on the 4th try got to ride,” one of Magyar’s followers confirmed. 

It’s also important to note that cruisers cannot simply walk up to the roller coaster and ride.

Bookings must be made in advance on the Carnival HUB app, which cannot be done until embarkation day

As many of the activities on Carnival sailings are automatically included in the cruise fare, passengers who are new to the family-friendly cruise line also might not realize that there is an extra charge to ride. 

For $15, guests get to enjoy two laps around the 800-foot track. But as Magyar suggests, “book the family passes,” as these offer three rides for the price of two. 

Last but not least, the Texas-native reminded guests to wear appropriate closed toed shoes – as those who show up barefoot or in flip flops may be turned away. 

Although Crocs have often been a source of controversy among Carnival cruisers, Magyar confirmed in the comments section that they count as acceptable footwear as long as they are secured with a back strap. 

A High-Speed Innovation 

While thrill seekers may be used to seeing attractions like water slides onboard, the BOLT roller coaster is truly the first of its kind. 

Known as the Ultimate Sea Coaster, the all-electric ride reaches speeds of up to 40 miles per hour and offers some breathtaking 360 degree ocean views. 

In order to ride the open air attraction, guests sit on what looks like a motorcycle or jet ski – and whichever passenger is up front can control the speed using the handlebars. 

For safety reasons, guests must be between 4’3” and 6’5” to ride and there is a maximum weight limit of 300 pounds per person.

Kids under 12 are also required to ride with someone who is 15-years-old or older.

Unsurprisingly, BOLT has been met with much enthusiasm in the cruising community – which is likely why the ride was also included on additional ships. 

“I highly recommend THE BOLT! It’s a blast,” one former guest exclaimed. 

“Scared the bejeezus out of me! I screamed and laughed the entire 30 second ride,” another happy cruiser shared.

In fact, the ride has received such a positive response, the other cruise lines seem to be taking note.

Disney Cruise Line, for example, already features hybrid water coasters, such as the AquaMouse, onboard Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and the upcoming Disney Destiny

But now, the new Disney Adventure will be setting sail with its own roller coaster at the end of 2025 – called Ironcycle Test Run – which will set a new record as the longest roller coaster at sea.

New MSC Cruise Terminal in Barcelona Welcomes First Guests

Not long after welcoming the first passengers to the new MSC cruise terminal in Miami, Florida, MSC Cruises is celebrating another milestone with its new facilities on the other side of the world. 

Indeed, the new MSC cruise terminal in Barcelona, Spain, disembarked its first guests – who were sailing onboard MSC Fantasia – on the morning of Saturday, February 15, 2025.

The flagship of the Fantasia-class vessels is currently operating multiple Mediterranean itineraries at once of varying lengths – which means not all of the up to 4,363 guests onboard were due to disembark that day. 

The guests who were going home via Europe’s largest cruise port included those on a 4-night one-way getaway sailing from Naples, Italy, to Barcelona, which embarked on February 11, 2025. 

Additionally, a 5-night one-way sailing that embarked from Genoa, Italy, on February 10, 2025, concluded on the same morning. 

With some guests staying onboard, this was a good opportunity for port employees to put the state-of-the-art facilities to test as a portion of the guests disembarked and another set embarked on what will be a new 7-night, round-trip sailing to the Mediterranean. 

Although the new terminal isn’t officially open yet, the milestone was still celebrated with a toast – which was led by Sandra Yunta, Director of the MSC Barcelona Cruise Terminal, and Gianluca Suprani, SVP of Global Port Development and Shore Activities.

The facilities, which were developed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA), have been described as a cutting-edge architectural masterpiece – designed to enhance the guest experience while in port. 

The terminal will be formally inaugurated in the next few months, with more details coming soon. 

Once it is officially up and running, it will serve both MSC cruise ships and vessels from Explora Journeys – which is a luxury brand that is owned by the MSC Group

Committing to a Future in Barcelona

When MSC Cruises obtained permission to build and operate a new terminal at the busy Barcelona cruise port, the brand had one goal in mind: Consolidate and strengthen its presence in Barcelona as an important gateway to the Western Mediterranean. 

“Barcelona is not only an important homeport for the cruises division, but also for the entire Group and its shipping business,” Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman, said when the project was confirmed in 2021.

As such, the new terminal is a further proof of MSC Group’s longstanding commitment to the city of Barcelona and the entire Catalonia region,” Vago continued.

As the largest cruise line in Europe, Mediterranean itineraries are among the most popular for the brand – although they do also sail to other destinations, such as the Caribbean. 

In recent years, MSC has also increased its presence in Spain in other ways – such as by scheduling 500 ship calls in 2023 and introducing mini cruises based out of Barcelona in 2024.

As the new terminal was designed, the cruise line kept both sustainability and the desire to enhance its homeport operations in Barcelona top of mind. 

“Perhaps most importantly, the new terminal will allow us to operate expanded homeport operations, resulting in added direct and indirect economic benefit for the city and the overall region,” Vago added.

“Finally, the new terminal allows us to further demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability as it will feature both shore power facilities as well as LNG bunkering operations,” he concluded.

As big supporters of shore power, which is a more environmentally friendly way to power ships while docked, MSC’s leadership team has plans in the works to expand shore power capability at ports throughout Europe and the US by the end of 2026. 

Barcelona was identified as one of 15 ports where local grid connection could be established, and with this goal in mind, the new terminal has been built to include both shore power facilities and LNG bunkering operations – which is another greener fuel alternative

Currently, 67% of the MSC fleet is equipped with shore power capability – with all new builds, such as the upcoming MSC World America, joining the fleet with this ability.

High Winds Continue to Keep Iconic Ship in Philadelphia

Winds have not yet subsided enough to permit the final journey of the SS United States to begin as planned on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Instead, yet one more delay is keeping the famed – and rapidly becoming infamous – vessel docked in Philadelphia rather than getting underway for Mobile, Alabama.

The decision to delay yet again was announced by Florida’s Okaloosa County, which has purchased the vessel and now controls her fate. While the aged ocean liner will eventually be scuttled off the Florida panhandle coast near Destin-Fort Worth Beach, the timing has to be right for the delicate move.

“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, Florida’s Okaloosa County has announced that the departure of the SS United States from Philadelphia has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 19, 2025 due to continued high wind conditions,” the latest delay announcement read.

“We realize these repeated delays have been challenging, but we are committed to sharing these updates with you as we receive them.”

To be fair, the SS United States Conservancy and Okaloosa County do want to ensure the ship is moved smoothly and safely. To do that, weather conditions need to be right.

As of Monday evening, winds in Delaware Bay were reported at 16-20 knots (18-23 miles per hour). Moving just offshore into the Atlantic Ocean, wind speeds increased as high as 24 knots (28 mph).

This most recent delay is just one more day for the vessel to remain in the City of Brotherly Love, as she should now move on Wednesday – one day later than the first wind-related delay.

First, tugboats will maneuver the ship from Pier 80 – where she was moved on Valentine’s Day – out into the Delaware River channel approximately 2-3 hours before low tide. Once low tide is reached, the SS United States can be moved down the river and under various bridges before she will taste the ocean once more.

It is mandatory that the ship be moved at low tide due to clearances with those bridges, particularly the Walt Whitman Bridge – the first span she will encounter, less than a mile from where she has been docked all these years.

Just a few feet will separate the top of the ship’s smokestacks from the bridge’s span as she is moved, and no one wants to risk any dangerous incident that could damage the bridge or the ship.

While still subject to further delays or changes as weather or operational concerns warrant, the SS United States should begin her move down the Delaware River at approximately 12:51 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

The full journey to Mobile is expected to take approximately two weeks, though unforeseen circumstances along the way could cause further changes in the schedule. The ship’s course will be adjusted every six hours with real-time route planning, and she will be tracked online for fans to keep updated on her progress.

Hazards of a Delicate Move

The SS United States is admittedly not in her peak condition after being docked in Philadelphia for the past 343 months, and having been out of service even longer – since November 14, 1969.

Numerous inspections and evaluations have been carried out in recent weeks to ensure the ship is safe to move, though wear and decay on the vessel means she must be moved very carefully under tug assistance.

Optimal weather conditions are essential to avoid any rough conditions or mishaps on her 2,000-mile journey to the ship yard in Mobile, where work will be done to make her suitable to become the world’s largest artificial coral reef. That work will take approximately a year to complete.

The first 100 miles of the ship’s journey, from Pier 80 down the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean, will likely be the most challenging. Along the way, the ship must be carefully maneuvered along the twists and turns of the navigation channel, under numerous bridges, and around other marine traffic.

Once she has reached the open ocean, the SS United States will have more maneuverability in case of difficulties, but will also be more vulnerable to winds and rough weather.

Hopefully, once the weather clears a bit the ship will be able to make her way toward her new destiny and continuing legacy. While it may not be the end for the ship that fans would have wanted, all steps and precautions are being taken to be sure she can reach that end safely.

New First-Ever Experiences Revealed for Disney Adventure

A new cruise ship is always an exciting prospect, and Disney cruise fans now have even more to be excited about for the upcoming Disney Adventure.

When the new ship debuts in December 2025 from Singapore, she will bring brand new experiences with favorite characters, immersive activities, and plenty of Disney magic to everyone aboard.

Of special note is the very first Marvel Style Studio on any Disney cruise ship. This unique experience will offer transformative fun with Marvel-inspired hair, clothing, and makeup options for both children and adults, a great way to celebrate and enjoy favorite super heroes such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, and more.

When not in use for style sessions, the salon will occasionally become an adults-only lounge with beverage tasting experiences, offering even more options for new experiences.

The classic Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique – a mainstay enchanted salon experience – will be a key feature aboard Disney Adventure, helping guests ages 3-12 become their favorite magical characters. Options will range from princes and princesses to sea captains and brave knights, so everyone can enjoy the adventures they love best.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeovers include different dress and costume choices, hairstyling, makeup, and accessories. Parents can also book a private photo session for their little adventurer, capturing those magical memories in one-of-a-kind ways.

For even more magical fun, younger cruisers ages 3-12 can join in the Royal Society for Friendship and Tea, a charming royal party with iconic Disney princesses. Storytelling, music, and of course, treats and keepsakes will be part of the event, which emphasizes values such as kindness, determination, and bravery.

Making special appearances aboard Disney Adventure will be Duffy and Friends, with the beloved characters offering a brand-new, first-in-the-fleet stage show – “Duffy and The Friend Ship.” The adventurous show will follow Tippy Blue, Duffy, and other fun characters on a sea journey.

Duffy and other characters will also offer the Duffy and Friends Quest, beginning at the themed onboard shop where guests can purchase a “discovery guide” with scavenger hunt clues to find missing items around Disney Adventure. After completing the quest, guests can claim a unique commemorative gift as their prize.

Another action-packed, adrenaline-pumping show will also debut aboard the new ship – “Captain Jack Sparrow & The Siren Queen.” Guests are invited to dress in their pirate best for the hunt for treasure in the Disney Imagination Garden space, along with battling an ink-squirting giant squid and other swashbuckling twists.

Of course, Disney Adventure will also feature other oceangoing adventures throughout the vessel. From the Toy Story theme of the water splash pad to the Moana-inspired Wayfinder Bay relaxation area, guests can enjoy their Disney and Pixar favorites all across the 208,000-gross-ton ship.

Setting Sail Aboard Disney Adventure

Formerly the Global Dream, which Disney Cruise Line purchased in November 2022, Disney Adventure will be Disney Cruise Line’s first vessel to homeport from Asia, bringing classic Disney magic to another part of the globe.

Disney Adventure will be sailing from Singapore, offering 3- and 4-night sailings with no ports of call. These immersive voyages will ensure guests have ample time to enjoy all of the ship’s outstanding features and focus on making magical vacation memories.

Her first voyage will depart Singapore on December 15, 2025, just in time for outstanding holiday sailings. Disney Adventure will remain sailing from the Garden City year-round for a minimum of five years, part of Disney Cruise Line’s commitment and partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board.

Disney Adventure will be organized into seven themed areas onboard, each one showcasing unique magic and storytelling elements from classic Disney, Pixar, and Marvel films.

“These uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they’ll cherish forever,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line.

Guests will find fun from “The Little Mermaid,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Finding Nemo,” “Luca,” “Big Hero 6,” “Frozen,” “Tangled,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and other favorites throughout the vessel, from stateroom theming and decor to onboard artwork, venue spaces, activities, and more.

Carnival Ship Unable to Depart Homeport Due to Wind

Guests embarking Carnival Sunshine for an 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruise on Sunday, February 16, 2025 will not be setting sail as they’d hoped – though their cruise is still starting on time.

Carnival Cruise Line reached out to guests the day before embarkation to advise them of the change due to incoming poor weather.

“Our Fleet Operations Center is actively monitoring a cold front that is set to impact the Norfolk area Sunday afternoon, into early Monday morning,” the notification explained. “Strong winds and high waves will make it unsafe to depart as previously scheduled.”

This means Carnival Sunshine will instead remained docked in Norfolk until the rough weather subsides enough for the ship to safely set sail. This is anticipated at approximately 6 a.m. on Monday, February 17.

This is only Carnival Sunshine‘s second departure from Norfolk following arriving at her new homeport. Her first cruise from the Old Dominion was a 5-night Bahamas cruise from February 11-16.

Guests will still be embarking Carnival Sunshine as expected on Sunday and able to enjoy most of the ship’s facilities.

“Related to embarkation for tomorrow, Sunday, February 16, there are no changes,” the email confirmed. “All guests should arrive within their pre-selected Terminal Arrival Appointment. Embarkation will close by the final boarding time indicated on the boarding pass.”

To be clear, the embarkation day plans are not impacted by the weather delay (be sure to grab a slice of the famous Funfetti cheesecake!). Only the ship’s departure is now delayed. This does impact some onboard activities, however.

“While we are docked in Norfolk, all activities and events will continue as planned, but the casino and shops must remain closed,” the email said.

It is normal for ships to be required to have the onboard casino and Fun Shops closed while docked in ports of call, due to local restrictions on such retail operations. Once the vessel reaches international waters, however, they will be able to open.

Itinerary Change Due to Delay

The significant delay – more than 12 hours – means Carnival Sunshine will be unable to maintain her original itinerary. The visit to Princess Cays, which had been planned for Friday, February 21, must now be cancelled.

Fortunately, the two other ports of call are being extended to permit guests extra time ashore.

The call to Amber Cove was originally planned for Wednesday, February 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Now, the ship will not be in Amber Cove until Friday, February 21, but will be docked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. – an extra hour of shore time.

The call to Grand Turk had originally been planned for Thursday, February 20 from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Now, the ship will be in port from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., an extra two-and-a-half hours. The date of the visit has not changed.

Any pre-paid tours guests purchased through Carnival Cruise Line for Princess Cays will be refunded to travelers’ Sail and Sign accounts, along with the taxes and fees for that now-cancelled port visit. Similarly, tours for Amber Cove will be adjusted to the new schedule.

“We were looking forward to delivering the itinerary we had planned and share your disappointment for this weather-related change but trust you will understand that your safety is a priority,” the email explained.

It is not unusual for ships to make last-minute itinerary changes due to weather. Ports of call are often modified, changed, or even cancelled altogether if necessary.

It is more uncommon, however, for a ship to remain at her homeport while waiting for the weather to improve.

As of noon on embarkation day, winds just outside the Port of Norfolk at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay were reported as high as 36 knots (41 miles per hour).

While cruise ships can sail in high winds, the direction of the winds, any resulting swells and waves, and navigation challenges are all factored into safety decisions. In these cases, it is best for the ship to stay firmly docked for the safety and comfort of everyone aboard.

The 103,881-gross-ton Carnival Sunshine can welcome 2,642 guests aboard. The ship is also home to 1,150 international crew members who strive to ensure every guest has a wonderful cruise vacation, whether the sun is shining or not.

Name Change Leads to Booking Problems for Newlyweds

Even for experienced cruisers, getting the correct travel documentation together ahead of their sailing can be complicated – as different cruise lines and destinations can have different requirements. 

But one universal rule is that the name on each guest’s identification needs to match their booking confirmation due to strict security and immigration regulations.

Neglecting to do so could lead to delays at the cruise port, or worse, cause the guest to be denied boarding and miss their cruise without any refund or compensation. 

So, what happens if you change your name after booking your cruise but before embarkation day? This is exactly what is leading to issues for a travel agent who has booked a Royal Caribbean cruise and airfare package for a recently married couple. 

“Long story short, they were planning on getting married, but didn’t know exact timing. Cruise + Airfare was booked in August, final payment was in December. Cruise is sailing mid-March. Passport just came in this week with her new name,” the unidentified travel advisor explained on Reddit.

Now that she has her new passport, the agent has to update her booking with the newlywed’s new last name – which he says comes with a more than $200 fee. 

“I call Royal Caribbean to request a name change due to marriage. They said my only option is to cancel and rebook her. Oh, btw, that’s a $215 cancellation fee,” he wrote.

“So does my client seriously have to go through all this trouble just to go from ‘Smith’ to ‘Jones’ on her reservation? This is such a horrible situation for all women who get married and change their last name.”

Most likely, the fee is related to changing the airfare portion of the Air2Sea package – as Royal Caribbean does not typically charge a fee for updating names ahead of their cruises.

Per Royal Caribbean’s website, updating a person’s name for the sailing is usually free, but guests who booked airfare through the Miami-based cruise line may also be subject to change fees if their airfare has already been assigned to an airline – which seems to be the case here.

“Changes may be subject to additional charges if you booked airfare through our Air2Sea program and your airfare has been assigned,” says the policy.

Considering the travel agent posting on Reddit did not know these policies, it makes one wonder how experienced and reputable he really is.

How and When to Update Your Name

With cruises often booked months – or even years – in advance, sometimes changes are inevitable. 

In addition to getting married, circumstances could also arise in which an original guest can no longer be part of the voyage and someone else takes their spot.

According to Royal Caribbean’s website, name changes and substitutions can be made by calling the cruise line directly or through the travel agent who made the booking until the final electronic manifest is sent to the ship. 

Typically, the final manifest is submitted one hour before sailing after check-in concludes and all guests are required to be onboard. 

“Name changes (first or last) or substitutions can be made to all but one of the original names on your booking. These changes must be made before the final electronic manifest is sent to the ship,” Royal Caribbean’s website reads.

Groups have slightly different rules, where name charges are only allowed until the final option date when the payment is due in full – which will be at 180 days or 120 days before the cruise depending on the length of the itinerary.

If a guest legally changes their name prior to their sailing and is not able to make it match their documents in time, guests will need to be prepared with another supporting document to verify their identity when they arrive at the cruise port. 

“If your name has changed since your document was issued, you will either need to update the name on that document, or bring an additional, official supporting document to help explain why the name is different,” the website states.

Acceptable supporting documents include a state, county, or province-issued marriage license, a divorce decree, government-issued name change documents, and official adoption papers.

If a name change or substitution applies to your booking, make sure to confirm documentation requirements with your cruise line as soon as possible to avoid any mishaps or missed cruises.

One More Delay for Aging Ocean Liner After First Small Move

While the SS United States finally made her initial move from Pier 82 to Pier 80 in Philadelphia on Valentine’s Day after multiple delays, the ship will not be making her way down the Delaware River as planned on Monday, February 17, 2025.

A high wind warning has forced yet another delay for the ocean liner’s departure from Philadelphia following a protracted legal battle, eventual pier eviction, and search for a new home.

“After completing additional due diligence involving further testing and safety protocols for the U.S. Coast Guard and safely moving the SS United States from her decades-long berth at Pier 82 to Pier 80, Okaloosa County has announced that a high wind warning issued for Monday, February 17, has delayed the anticipated departure of the SS United States from Philadelphia by a day,” the SS United States Conservancy reported.

While this latest delay is sure to be frustrating for those eager to see the ship once more set sail, it is only a one-day change from the most recent plan for the ship’s departure.

“The SS United States is now expected to begin her tow down the Delaware River at approximately 12:00 PM ET on Tuesday, February 18,” the Conservancy confirmed.

Low tide on Tuesday is at 12:29 p.m., which is when the ship will begin to get underway. This is critical timing to ensure the vessel – which measures 153 feet from keel to funnel – can safely pass beneath various bridges on her way to the Atlantic Ocean.

The SS United States must past beneath the Walt Whitman Bridge (150-foot clearance), the Commodore Barry Bridge (192-foot clearance), and the Delaware Memorial Bridge (174-foot clearance) before reaching the eastern seaboard.

While it may seem that the elderly ocean liner will be unable to pass below the Walt Whitman Bridge, bridge clearance is measured from the surface of the water to the underside of the span. The SS United States has a 31-foot draft – the distance from the waterline to the bottom of the hull beneath the surface.

This means that the height of the ship from the waterline to her tallest point above water is roughly 144 feet. This leaves just a 6-foot clearance to pass below the Walt Whitman Bridge.

This small space requires very precise timing for the liner to move down the Delaware River and safely pass beneath the bridge. This is most particularly on many people’s minds less than a year after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, after it was struck by the container ship Dali.

A Very Controversial Move

The ship’s continual delays have stirred both jokes and controversy over the plans for her disposition.

The initial plan was for the SS United States to begin her final voyage in mid-November 2024, but that was not possible due to the development of late-season tropical storms.

She was then scheduled to begin her trip on February 6, 2025, but that was delayed at the last minute for even more due diligence.

Now, this third delay for a high wind warning really demonstrates just how precarious the ship’s repositioning can be.

Some fans of the ship have commented that perhaps she doesn’t want to move after all, and fate might be intervening to provide more time for a plan to surface for her salvation.

Unfortunately, that will not be the case, as the deal with Okaloosa County, Florida to convert the hull into the world’s largest coral reef is moving forward, just not on the initially anticipated schedule.

The ship did take her first cautious steps on February 14, with tugboats slowly easing the vessel from Pier 82 to Pier 80. The small lateral move was nevertheless significant for a ship that has remained firmly docked since 1996.

Many supporters of the vessel are dismayed at the plans to scuttle the ship, though this will help preserve her legacy – albeit below the waves rather than above them. A land-based museum near her sinking location will also contain artifacts, memorabilia, and other material to share her legacy with future generations.

Once she moves down the river, it will take approximately two weeks for the ship to complete her tug-driven voyage to Mobile, Alabama. The ship’s course will be closely monitored en route, with adjustments every six hours as needed for weather, currents, and other factors.

Carnival has a very loyal following and is widely known as America’s Cruise Line – but not everyone is a fan.

Indeed, the Fun Ships can be divisive with some going so far as to describe Carnival sailings as “ghetto,” “cheap,” or as YouTuber Jack Pembrook reports, “the world’s worst cruise” or “the cruise from Hell.”

Curious to find out if Carnival sailings were truly as terrible as some would insist, Pembrook headed to Florida’s PortMiami to embark on a $50 sailing onboard Carnival Conquest.

The ship is currently offering 3 and 4-night getaway sailings to the Bahamas, though it’s unclear which itinerary the influencer selected or when he was actually onboard.

Along the way, he rated Carnival on four key criteria that he saw come up the most in bad reviews: food, rooms, activities, and vibes – and found that the 2002-launched ship performed better than he expected. 

Starting with the cruise cabins, Pembrook was pleasantly surprised by his interior stateroom – noting that his room could still fit a big bed and that the bathroom was “spacious” and smelled “really good.”

“Yes, I did find some hairs and some stains on the bed, as well as plenty of signs of wear around the room. But for the reputation these rooms have online, honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” Pembrook said during a stateroom tour.

Moving onto the food, the vlogger sampled many of the selections onboard, including the Lido Marketplace buffet, Guy’s Burger Joint, and specialty dining at the Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse

The Steakhouse meal ultimately sealed the deal for Pembrook, who enjoyed his steak so much he shut his eyes as he savored a bite. 

And even after saying the 110,000-gross ton ship reminded him of a Cheesecake Factory Restaurant and trying the night club as someone who doesn’t normally enjoy them, Pembrook said both the activities and the vibes were up to par.

“Before I got on this ship, I really didn’t even want to step foot on this thing. But by the end of my trip, I’m surprisingly sad to leave,” Pembrook said.

“No, it’s not super luxurious or perfect in any way, but for me, I just come on a cruise to have fun, eat good food, and like my boy Steven said, meet cool people,” he continued, inserting a clip with another guest who is presumably Steven.

Does Carnival Deserve a Bad Reputation? 

Over the years, things have gone wrong on Carnival ships that have led to its less than stellar reputation.

Likely not helping matters, Carnival Conquest has already made headlines this year due to malfunctions onboard. 

The 2,980-guest ship experienced engine trouble that limited her speed and delayed her return to Miami, Florida, on January 6, 2025 – with multiple Carnival cruise ships also suffering from propulsion issues in the past year.

Additionally, there’s no denying that mishaps across the fleet have left a bad impression for some. For example, Carnival Freedom losing her funnel to fires on more than one occasion (in 2022 and 2024) still feel top-of-mind. 

That said, things can go wrong on all cruise lines – even the most luxurious brands. Cruise ships operate on a 24/7 basis, and although the cruise lines work hard to maintain their ships, malfunctions are sometimes inevitable.

“Honestly Carnival gave me one of the best experiences of my life and I will never forget the memories and people I met,” one person shared.

“After 30 cruises, of which Conquest was my 2nd cruise, I really had fun. As long as you know what you are getting with Carnival, you can’t go wrong,” another cruiser chimed in. 

Indeed, a lot of the experience does come down to mindset and what guests are hoping to get from their sailing. 

Someone looking for a luxury experience might not love Carnival, but someone looking for a budget-friendly option can certainly have a blast.
