Norwegian Cruise Line Drops Bottled Water on One Ship

Key Aspects:

  • Bottled water will no longer be available as part of drink packages on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America.
  • Vero Water dispensers are being added throughout the ship for guests to refill bottles and cups.
  • Guests can still buy bottled water a-la-carte if desired, but it is not included in packages.

Staying hydrated is important on any cruise, but is particularly critical in tropical regions such as the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. It is in Hawaii, however, that Norwegian Cruise Line is adjusting its drink packages and will no longer include bottled water.

The cruise line has reached out to travel agents and booked guests with the update on what water is and isn’t included aboard Pride of America, the only cruise ship offering 7-night inter-island Hawaii sailings.

“To help reduce single-use plastics onboard, we’re including eco-friendly unlimited premium Vero Water and discontinuing the use of bottled water in both our Hawaii Beverage and Water Packages,” the cruise line confirmed.

This is part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, which is particularly critical to preserving the natural beauty of the Aloha State.

Many cruise lines have adopted other sustainability measures to reduce or eliminate single-use plastic, such as no longer offering straws and switching to wooden coffee stirrers.

Vero Water will be available through dispensers at various locations onboard, including on the pool deck, the main dining rooms, and different cafes and restaurants. A water station is also “coming soon” to the gangway to ensure easy fill-ups as guests depart to explore ports of call.

“Just bring your favorite bottle or cup and refill as often as you like,” the cruise line said.

Guests with the beverage or water package will need to activate the dispensers with their keycard as well as bring along their own bottle or cup for refilling.

Pride of America reusable keepsake water bottles are also available for purchase ($14.95 USD) at any bar. On embarkation day, sales tables will also be available in the ship’s atrium, at the Aloha Cafe on Deck 11, and on the pool deck.

To be clear, the Hawaii Beverage Package does include unlimited Vero Water, but not the reusable bottle, which must be purchased separately. The bottle is included with the Vero Water Package, which costs $29.95.

Guests will still be able to purchase bottled water individually if desired, which can be especially helpful for port visits or if one doesn’t want the souvenir bottle.

Vero Water is filtered water and part of the Culligan brand, a US-based company familiar worldwide in corporate, restaurant, hotel, and home settings.

Multiple Drink Package Changes

Several cruise lines have been updating their beverage packages in recent weeks.

In June, Carnival Cruise Line announced the impending switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola products, which should be rolled out fleetwide in early or mid-September.

Sister line Princess Cruises also tweaked its add-on packages and which drinks are and aren’t counted toward daily limits.

Just days ago, Royal Caribbean confirmed that it has tightened the “everyone must purchase” policy on its all-inclusive beverage package, ending an exemption loophole that has grown out of control.

Regardless of which cruise line guests enjoy or which beverages they toast their next sailings with, package terms and conditions are always subject to change. It is not unusual for cruise lines to adjust offerings based on popularity, guest feedback, and corporate contracts.

Overboard Passenger Rescued From Cruise Ship in Baltic Sea

Key Aspects:

  • The alarm was raised aboard AIDAnova in the middle of the night as the ship sailed toward Copenhagen.
  • The ship’s crew recovered from the water an 18-year-old intoxicated male who was unharmed.
  • Apparently, the teenager had joked with his friends about jumping overboard.

Imagine being awakened in your cruise cabin in the wee hours of the morning by the urgent public address announcement: Man overboard!

That was the experience for thousands of guests aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova as she sailed the Baltic Sea on her way to Copenhagen.

The 16-deck ship, which carries 6,600 guests at full capacity, sprang to life at 2 a.m. on July 16, 2025 when the ship’s loudspeakers blared the news that someone had gone overboard.

Local media reported that the 183,858-gross-ton ship was immediately stopped and turned around, and a dramatic rescue mission was launched by crew members in lifeboats. Bleary-eyed guests were told they could help in the search by using cell phone flashlights to illuminate the dark water.

Police reports later identified the overboard guest as an intoxicated 18-year-old male. Police indicated that he jumped overboard after a bout of drinking with friends, and had even joked about it earlier in the evening.

Fortunately, his misguided adventure did not end in tragedy and the teenager was retrieved, unharmed, from the ocean by ship’s crew. His name and nationality were not revealed.

However, the drama was not yet over for the ship’s passengers.

The ship’s captain required that all passengers assemble at their muster stations for a total headcount — just to make certain that no one else had gone missing.

Finally, around 4 a.m., the event came to a close. At the time of the alarm, the ship was enroute to Copenhagen and was traveling at about 15 knots with force 6 winds, meaning the winds were topping out at a stiff 30 mph.

AIDAnova, which entered service in 2018, was sailing a 7-night Scandinavia cruise roundtrip from Kiel, Germany. Her weeklong voyages typically call at Copenhagen on day four, following a visit to Skagen, Denmark. After the call at Copenhagen, the ship visits Aarhus, Denmark, before returning to Kiel.

There was no police or cruise line statement about any ramifications the teen would experience as a result of his misconduct.

Recent Overboard Cases Include a Crew Tragedy

Man overboard alarms happen from time to time on cruise ships, and some end in tragedy. In one recent case aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, a crew member jumped overboard after an altercation with another crew member.

The person who jumped was retrieved from the water near the Bahamas, but did not survive the July 25, 2025 fall. Icon of the Seas had been operating an Eastern Caribbean cruise from PortMiami.

Sometimes, man overboard alarms turn out to be accidental falls. One high-profile and particularly scary event happened on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream on June 29, 2025.

In that instance, a 5-year-old girl slipped overboard and was saved by her father, who dove into the water after her. Both were rescued by the ship’s crew, who had quickly launched lifeboats. The ship was sailing a 4-night Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale.

Perfect Day Turns Ugly After Guest Brawl Shuts Down Pool at CocoCay

Key Aspects:

  • A large brawl broke out in the Oasis Lagoon on CocoCay on Sunday, August 3, while two ships were enjoying the private island.
  • The pool was temporarily closed afterward, possibly for cleaning and sanitizing if blood was spilled.
  • Royal Caribbean has not issued an official statement, but those involved are likely to face consequences for their unruly behavior.

A cruise vacation should be a peaceful time to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family while having fun at top destinations.

One of Royal Caribbean’s top destinations is Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas. Guests aboard Utopia of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, however, experienced neither a relaxing utopia nor a jewel of a visit on Sunday, August 3.

Both ships were sailing 3-night weekend getaways that departed on Friday, August 1. Utopia of the Seas sails from Port Canaveral, while Jewel of the Seas sails from Fort Lauderdale.

During their day at CocoCay, a fight involving at least a dozen or more guests broke out in the Oasis Lagoon. The freshwater pool includes a swim-up bar and in-water loungers, and the altercation happened in waist-deep water.

Video posted on social media shows fists flying, angry splashes, yelling, profanity, pushing, slaps, and other physical violence between multiple adults.

Other guests on the island who were not involved reported that there was blood and hair in the pool after the incident, and some guests were seen being escorted away by security.

The Oasis Lagoon was temporarily closed after the fight, which would have been a necessary precaution if blood were spilled. Cleanup and sanitization would be essential after such an event.

Royal Caribbean has not yet issued an official statement about the incident.

As the fight occurred on CocoCay, charges could be brought through the Bahamian authorities depending on the extent of any injuries or how the fight began or escalated.

The guests involved are also likely to face consequences directly from Royal Caribbean. The cruise line’s Guest Conduct Policy states:

“Verbally abusive or offensive language directed toward anyone, including guests, crew members, governmental officials, or others is not permitted.”

The policy also notes that “inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted,” which includes “uninvited physical contact.”

All guests agree to the Guest Conduct Policy when they book a Royal Caribbean cruise. Violations can result in a range of consequences, from being admonished by security to the removal of the involved guests and everyone in their travel party from the cruise.

Involved guests might also be banned from Royal Caribbean and related cruise lines.

This is not the first time a fight has occurred at CocoCay. In May 2025, a brawl between several guests escalated over the use of ocean space in the Chill Island area.

Reactions of Other Guests

While fights certainly don’t happen on every cruise, it does seem like such incidents are becoming more common.

Longtime cruisers often wonder what can be done to dissuade such behavior. Cruise lines do try to have security visibly posted in public areas, but that isn’t always a deterrent, especially in a large area like the Oasis Lagoon.

Many cruisers have suggested bans not just from one cruise line, but from entire cruise line families. For Royal Caribbean, this would include Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, both of which are also part of the Royal Caribbean Group.

Oasis Lagoon
Oasis Lagoon

While a multi-line ban may seem harsh, it isn’t necessarily meaningful. While many cruisers enjoy sailing with different lines, people who feel no compunction against brawling in public aren’t always the type of travelers to sail on premium or luxury lines.

Some experienced cruisers hope that cruise lines might begin sharing information on banned individuals.

More From Cruise Hive

This could mean that someone banned from Royal Caribbean might also be banned on Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, or Norwegian Cruise Line.

Sharing such identifying information, not to mention details of incidents and their consequences, may face legal challenges. At this time, no cruise lines share such information outside of their corporate families.

Residential Cruise Ship Fails CDC Health Inspections, Scored 81

Key Aspects:

  • Villa Vie Odyssey scored 81 on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vessel Sanitation Program inspection on July 9, 2025.

After a tumultuous start in 2024, things were looking up for Villa Vie Odyssey, the residential cruise ship currently operating her first world voyage. That is, until inspectors from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s Vessel Sanitation Program stepped aboard.

The ship, owned by Villa Vie Residences, failed its first CDC inspection on July 9, 2025, with a score of 81. Any score of 85 or below means a cruise ship’s sanitation practices are not satisfactory. In the case of Villa Vie Odyssey, inspectors cited 44 violations.

Some were relatively minor, such as a buffet menu that did not include any asterisks next to foods that may be served raw or undercooked, to more serious conditions related to potable water and insufficient refrigeration of certain foods.

Purification of Potable Water Emerges as an Issue

Multiple violations concerning potable water were cited. Onboard records reviewed by inspectors indicated that chlorine levels were consistently below required levels on at least three days in early June and two days in late June.

Although water testing had been conducted and levels were found to be insufficient, no action was taken to correct the problems. Chlorine is used as a water purification treatment for potable water on cruise ships.

Water issues extended to the ship’s two swimming pools. Neither had safety signs or depth markers, and the ropes attached to safety rings were not long enough to reach across two-thirds of the pools’ width.

Pool drain covers had been painted over, and all hot tubs were out of order. Neither pool had hair and lint strainers.

Cleanliness, Food Prep Standards Cited With Violations

Several infractions targeted the ship’s storage and preparation of food. Among the most egregious:

In a pastry preparation area on Deck 1, two trays of cheesecake and one tray of caramel mousse were stored in a refrigerator that was found to be 57 degrees Fahrenheit, when they should have been kept at 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the Palms Cafe beverage station in the buffet, multiple containers of milk were labeled with set up and discard times that did not match the times shown on the time control panel.

Inspectors found more than two dozen pieces of hot- and cold-holding equipment that were out of order, and a waffle iron with black debris on it that was stored with cleaned equipment.

In the Palm’s Cafe buffet area, a glass-washing machine was found to have utensils, cups, and other equipment loaded on a rack in such a way as to prevent all surfaces from being effectively washed, rinsed, and sanitized.

Dead fruit flies were found in a food pantry on Deck 5, and the deck-head above the buffet had exposed wiring and ducting.

The Ship Had Encountered Issues Before Launch

Odyssey Float Out

Villa Vie Odyssey is a 30-year-old ship that formerly sailed as Braemar, for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, and as Cunard Crown Dynasty, for Cunard, among other names and ownerships. Villa Vie Residences bought the ship in 2023, the same year it launched its residential brand.

The ship was inaugurated in Spain in October 2024 following several months of delay due to various mechanical issues that surfaced during her dry dock refit in summer 2024.

Travelers can buy a cabin outright or opt for seasonal ownership. The line also offers a Tour La Vie rental option as well as a Try Before You Buy alternative. The ship is scheduled to complete a world cruise every 3.5 years.

The CDC inspection was the first for the vessel. According to the cruise line’s planned route, the ship was scheduled to be in Juneau, Alaska, at the time of the July 9 inspection, but the site of the CDC visit was not confirmed.

All cruise ships that call at US ports are subject to unannounced inspections by the CDC. As of this posting, Villa Vie Odyssey has not yet submitted its Corrective Report to the inspectors.

Unexpected Showers Dampen Day Inside Wonder of the Seas

Key Aspects:

  • Wonder of the Seas experienced an unexpected rainy day indoors with a recent sprinkler malfunction on the Royal Promenade.
  • There was no fire or emergency, and it is unknown why the sprinkler system inadvertently activated and soaked the deck.
  • This is the third sprinkler malfunction aboard an Oasis class ship just in the past year, and the second aboard Wonder of the Seas since 2022.

Rain can quickly ruin what was to have been an enjoyable day of a cruise vacation, whether the ship is visiting a port of call or cruising along at sea.

It’s easy enough for most guests to retreat indoors when showers threaten and take advantage of more sheltered activities, but what about when the rain is actually indoors?

A recent incident onboard Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas was exactly that – indoor rain. Or rather, a malfunction of the sprinkler system that made it seem like a very rainy day indeed.

Photos of the surprise shower have been posted online, showing a dense misty rain at the aft end of the Royal Promenade on Deck 5, near the ship’s iconic Rising Tide bar.

There is no indication why the sprinklers may have activated, though one guest sums it up well:

“Better they trigger accidentally than not trigger when needed,” they said.

Crew members would have responded immediately to the unexpected shower, working diligently to contain the water and clean up impacted areas so there was no damage or slippery hazards.

There are no reports of any alarms, alert codes, or muster calls at any time for what is clearly a malfunction rather than a response to a true emergency. No guests were in danger, nor are any injuries reported.

This is not the first time the sprinklers have made a sudden appearance aboard Wonder of the Seas. On the ship’s maiden voyage in March 2022, a similar rain shower happened in nearly the same location.

In that incident, nearby fire doors were closed to help contain the water and keep it from spreading. Portions of Decks 4 and 6 were also closed as a precaution for cleanup and inspection.

It is possible that illicit smoking, vaping, or tampering with the sprinkler system could have caused the malfunction, though this is unlikely in a public area.

The 235,600-gross ton, Oasis class Wonder of the Seas is currently sailing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary that departed Port Canaveral on August 3.

The ship has already visited Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas and is spending Wednesday, August 6 in Puerto Rico before visiting St. Maarten on Thursday and returning to Port Canaveral on August 10.

There is no indication of exactly when this most recent sprinkler malfunction occurred.

The ship’s time at Port Canaveral is winding down, as Wonder of the Seas will be moving to Miami with her first South Florida departure on Monday, August 25. She will be offering 3- and 4-night Bahamas cruises, with each voyage visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay as well as Nassau.

Wonder of the Seas‘ departure from Port Canaveral comes shortly after Star of the Seas, second in the famed Icon class, will arrive to join the Royal Caribbean fleet.

More Unexpected Showers

Wonder of the Seas is not the only ship to experience unexpected waterworks onboard. A variety of splishy-splashy incidents have happened on other ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Two of her sister Oasis class ships, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas, have had similar sprinkler mishaps just in the past year.

Aboard Symphony of the Seas, the sprinklers activated during a Halloween party on the Royal Promenade on October 31, 2024. It is possible that dry ice or fog machines used for a spooky ambiance during the event may have tripped the sprinkler system.

Just a few weeks later, Harmony of the Seas had a similar rain event on the Royal Promenade as the sprinklers unexpectedly went off on November 16, 2024.

So many incidents in the same relative locations seem to indicate a possible flaw or extra sensitivity in the fire suppression system aboard Oasis class ships, or it could simply be bad luck.

At any rate, guests onboard these extra-soaked sailings certainly have some unique cruise stories to share!

Carnival Tweaks Celebration Key Hours After Feedback

Key Aspects:

  • Food trucks and restaurants on Celebration Key will now open at 10 a.m. when ships with shorter visits are in port.
  • This change comes following guest feedback and examining itinerary schedules for ships from more distant homeports.
  • Celebration Key has 14 food trucks offering diverse menus featuring both classic favorites and Bahamian specialties.

Less than a month after its grand opening, Carnival Cruise Line is making operational adjustments to Celebration Key in a way guests will appreciate. In particular, guests sailing on Carnival Pride will benefit from the tweaking.

It is the hours for the various food trucks and restaurants at the destination that the cruise line is adjusting, with good cause. Since Celebration Key opened, the 14 food trucks and numerous casual and full-service restaurants have begun serving Island Eats and other delicious options at 11:30 a.m.

For most ships, this is a perfectly reasonable time for guests to enjoy chicken wings, cheeseburgers, tacos, wraps, mini donuts, caesar salads, and more.

For one particular ship with unique timing to the destination, however, that might be leaving lunch a bit late compared to the overall port time.

Worth Reading: Private Event Forces Cancellation of Pearl Cove Reservations

This has come to the attention of John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, and he announced the change in a daily Facebook video.

“A quick thing about Carnival Pride and maybe one or two other ships that have a shorter time at Celebration Key,” he said. “Now, obviously it takes longer to get all the way up to Baltimore than it does just to cross and up a little bit into one of the Florida home ports.”

Numerous guests have written to Heald, noting that when the food doesn’t open until 11:30 a.m., that doesn’t give a lot of time for everyone to enjoy a meal, then return to the ship for an earlier departure.

Carnival Pride sails from Baltimore and her 7-night Bahamas cruises visit Celebration Key, but only from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With dining service not starting until 11:30 a.m., that means guests can enjoy just 90 minutes of food service at most, depending on the all-aboard time.

In comparison, Carnival Celebration sails from Miami and visits Celebration Key from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., giving guests much more flexibility for onshore dining.

View of Celebration Key
View of Celebration Key

Similarly, ships sailing from Port Canaveral, including Carnival Freedom and Mardi Gras, are at Celebration Key from 7 or 8 a.m. generally until 4 p.m. or 5 p.m.

Now, however, food service is being adjusted to better accommodate ships with shorter port visits.

“All the restaurants, the food trucks, the food hall, everything there, are now going to be opening as of today, for the shorter [visits], from 10 a.m.,” Heald confirmed.

“That should give you enough chance to enjoy all the food options and not have to rush back to the ship after doing so.”

Heald does not indicate that there will be any opening hours change for ships that remain in port longer. Nevertheless, this news will be welcome for the thousands of guests who might not have quite as long to enjoy Celebration Key.

Food Options at Celebration Key

Carnival’s new private destination on Grand Bahama Island is using restaurants as well as a food truck model of service rather than the classic all-you-can-eat island barbecue (which, quite frankly, every other island does).

To that end, there are 14 different food truck stations, all offering unique and flavorful options. This provides more selections and vastly different tastes for guests to enjoy, such as:

  • Streatery Sushiva – Orange chicken roll or a Crazy California roll, plus other fusion tastes with tuna, conch, shrimp, and more
  • Mini Donut King – Classic plain, glazed, powdered sugar, and cinnamon sugar as well as specialty donuts like pina colada and guava cheesecake
  • Grand Bahama Taco Co. – Jerk chicken, fried fish, steak, and cheese tacos and quesadillas with Bahamian coleslaw or jerk mayo
  • Flippin’ Fritters – Conch, shrimp, and corn fritters as well as lobster, veggie, and sweet options with different dipping sauces

In addition, several restaurants are available with even more options, such as Gill’s Grill with both land and sea family-friendly choices and the Surf N’ Sauce BBQ & Brews restaurant with its outdoor smoker.

These are just a few of the tasty bites available at Celebration Key. Guests can select one meal from a food truck’s “Island Eats” menu for free, and other menu options are available for different prices.

Carnival’s one-meal-only dining plan at Celebration Key has caused some controversy, but portions are generous and guests can always purchase additional food if they wish.

Heald has explained that many of the food vendors at Celebration Key are independent operators, hence why the “Island Eats” menus are more limited. Guests’ Sail and Sign cards are valid at Celebration Key, however, and charges can be made directly to their onboard accounts.

Port Closure Delays Celebrity Cruise Ship, Embarkation Impacted

Key Aspects:

  • Celebrity Millennium was delayed nearly three hours entering the Port of Yokohama due to a port closure following a fireworks barge fire.
  • Embarking guests were asked to push back their arrival time appointments to accommodate the delay and avoid overcrowding.
  • There is no technical difficulty with the ship and Celebrity Millennium is ready to set sail on a 12-night Japan itinerary.

Celebrity Millennium was delayed returning to Yokohama, Japan on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, reportedly due to a sunken ship in the harbor.

This required underwater inspections to ensure a safe path for the 91,000-gross ton cruise ship to enter the harbor without risk of colliding with any debris.

Celebrity Millennium is homeported from Yokohama, which meant both debarking and embarking guests were delayed. The ship’s passenger capacity is 2,138 per sailing, so more than 4,200 guests may have been impacted.

Onboard, crew members kept guests informed throughout the 3-4 hour delay. Extra activities were added while guests waited for clearance to debark.

For those expecting to board the ship, Celebrity Cruises sent notifications as soon as possible when the delay was confirmed.

“Our arrival time remains fluid, and we kindly ask that you delay your arrival to the port until we advise you of your new arrival time,” the initial email read. “This adjustment is necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable arrival experience, and to help prevent overcrowding at the terminal.”

“We are committed to remaining in contact every hour so you can plan your arrival appropriately.”

It wasn’t long before Celebrity Millennium was able to proceed to the terminal. At that time, incoming guests were apprised of their adjusted arrival times.

Worth Reading: MSC Cruises Ship Extending Sailing After Port Closure

Arrival windows were shifted three hours later, with the exception of the last three arrival windows, which had less of an adjustment.

For example, guests who had selected to arrive at the cruise terminal at 11 a.m. were asked to delay their arrival until 2 p.m. Likewise, guests planning to arrive at 1 p.m. were asked to delay arriving until 4 p.m.

The 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. arrival times were all asked to arrive no later than 5 p.m. In general, those last arrival times are typically less popular and therefore process fewer guests.

“All guests should be checked-in and onboard by 6:00 PM and we’ll set sail at 7:00 PM, so please plan to arrive no later than 5:00 PM,” the cruise line emphasized.

To be clear, there is no damage to Celebrity Millennium and the ship is operating normally, without any technical issues or other cause behind the delay.

Celebrity Millennium has just finished a 12-night Best of Japan itinerary and is beginning another 12-night sailing to top Japanese ports, including Shimizu, Osaka, Hiroshima, and others, as well as Busan, South Korea.

Why Was the Port of Yokohama Closed?

Celebrity Cruises has not officially confirmed why the port was closed and inspections were needed prior to the ship’s arrival.

It is likely, however, that the temporary closure was related to an incident on August 4, when two barges carrying fireworks for a summer festival burst into flames in the harbor.

According to The Straits Times, five workers had to abandon the barges into the sea, but no injuries have been reported with the fiery fiasco.

Nevertheless, debris from the incident could easily impede harbor operations, requiring safety inspections for larger vessels.

It is also possible that cleanup efforts or other adjustments from the recent tsunami in the region could also have had an impact on how quickly Celebrity Millennium could be cleared to enter the harbor.

More From Cruise Hive

Similar closures have happened at other homeports. In June 2023, for instance, two boats collided in the Government Cut at PortMiami, closing the channel and delaying multiple cruise ships until the wreckage could be cleared.

Only Celebrity Millennium is at Yokohama on August 6, and the next ship will be Diamond Princess on August 15.

Two NCL Ships to Add Popular Venue in Upcoming Dry Dock

Key Aspects:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line is adding the Vibe Beach Club to Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl later in 2025.
  • The Vibe Beach Club is an exclusive onboard area that is meant for adults only, featuring amenities like an extra hot tub and a private bar.
  • Day passes and private cabanas can already be reserved in advance for sailings starting at the end of 2025.

It’s standard protocol for cruise ships to visit dry dock at least once every two to five years for routine maintenance.

However, two of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Jewel Class ships will be leaving dry dock with an extra special upgrade later this year that guests over the age of 18 will be very happy about.

Drum roll please: Both Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Jewel will be getting the popular adults-only Vibe Beach Club while in dry dock in the fall of 2025.

This is particularly exciting as the Vibe Beach Club is highly popular, but is only found onboard select ships in the NCL fleet.

Currently, the exclusive pool and lounge area is available onboard Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Prima, and Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian Cruise Line emailed Cruise Hive to share that the adults-only oasis would be replacing the additional sundeck that isn’t connected to the main pool on deck 14 onboard both vessels.

It will feature an additional luxury hot tub, as well as 54 lounge chairs and seven new private cabanas that can be reserved in advance.

“On both ships, guests will enjoy the addition of the popular, adults-only outdoor oasis Vibe Beach Club, which will replace the additional sundeck on deck 14 (separate from the main pool) and offer an additional hot tub, as well as 54 premium lounge chairs and seven new private cabanas to soak up the sun,” An NCL spokesperson wrote to Cruise Hive.

The venue will feature a quiet atmosphere designed for adult-friendly relaxation, and will offer amenities like a full-service bar that is meant for the exclusive use of beach club patrons.

“Guests can escape to a quiet, serene atmosphere at Vibe Beach Club with expansive views of the ocean; a full-service private bar; and personalized services including water spritzers, chilled towels and fruit skewers,” the email added.

The work will be completed on Norwegian Jewel from September 25, 2025, through October 15, 2025.

Norwegian Pearl will follow suit with her own dry dock stint from November 3 to November 23.

How to Enjoy the Vibe Beach Club

One cannot simply walk into the Vibe Beach Club. First, guests obviously have to be over 18 years old, which is a rule that is strictly enforced.

Next, passengers who would like to enjoy the Vibe Beach Club have to purchase day passes, which vary in cost depending on the length of the cruise.

The private cabanas are also available for rent, with these rentals including beach club admission for two guests.

Cabanas must be rented for the entirety of the cruise and there is a limit of only one cabana rental per cruise cabin.

Day passes and cabana rentals can already be pre-reserved online for Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl’s upcoming sailings. As these are known to sell out quickly, future guests are encouraged to act fast.

But before guests can think about securing access to this exclusive onboard area, they first need to get onboard.

After completing dry dock, the 2,330-guest Norwegian Jewel will be homeporting in Miami, Florida, from where she will operate sailings to the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.

The new and improved Norwegian Pearl will join her sister-ship in Miami, from where the 2,344-guest ship will offer sailings to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal.

Both ships will also visit the highly anticipated Great Tides Water Park when it opens on Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas in summer 2026.

First Funnel Removed from SS United States for Museum Restoration

Key Aspects

  • The SS United States is being prepped for placement as an artificial reef off the Florida coast.
  • The ship’s two funnels, at 65-feet tall, are being dismantled at a recycling center in Alabama.
  • The conservancy group that manages the vessel is building a companion museum in Destin-Fort Walton, Florida.

The illustrious and historic ocean liner SS United States will soon become an artificial reef off the coast of Florida, but parts of her will live on in a shoreside museum, including her enormous pair of funnels.

The first of the ship’s two funnels was dismantled on August 4, 2025 at her current location, a recycling center in Mobile, Alabama. The smokestacks are about 65 feet tall, and their removal is being watched by cruise ship enthusiasts, photographers, and others, according to local media reports.

The ship’s funnels were not just for show. They were fully functional, each serving an engine room and a boiler room on lower decks.

The funnels, along with other memorabilia still inside the iconic ship, will become a key focus of the SS United States Museum and Visitor Experience, which is slated to be built in Destin-Fort Walton Beach, located on the Panhandle of the Sunshine State. The artificial reef site is slated to be just off the Destin coast.

The 53,329-gross-ton ship that once accommodated about 1,900 guests and 900 crew members has a storied past. The SS United States was built in 1950 by United States Lines and sailed as a cruise ship until the early 1980s.

She holds the distinction of being the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean in either direction and welcomed scores of celebrities as well as many immigrants during her life span.

SS United States Museum

The ship was owned by multiple entities, left service in the mid-1980s, and eventually ended up docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia in 1996.

The derelict vessel eventually came under the protection of the SS United States Conservancy, a non-profit group that attempted to save the ship. However, a lack of financing led to eviction notices, and after several court battles a compromise plan to sink the ship as an artificial reef finally was reached.

Historic Vessel Finally Arrives in Alabama in 2025

In early March 2025, the SS United States arrived at Modern American Recycling Services in Mobile Bay. She is expected to remain there for about a year while being prepped to be sunk. Along with memorabilia, any toxic materials will be removed from the vessel before she enters the ocean.

Also, the hull will be reinforced so that the ship will remain upright on the ocean floor, offering a prime dive experience. The artificial reef and the museum are expected to become major tourist attractions in the Destin-Fort Walton area.

We are deeply committed to celebrating the enduring legacy of America’s Flagship, and we have assembled an extraordinary team to help us realize our vision, said Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy.

By incorporating iconic components from the historic ocean liner into an architecturally stunning land-based museum, the SS United States will continue to excite and inspire future generations, added Gibbs, the grand-daughter of naval architect William Francis Gibbs, who designed the ship.

Other large parts of the ship are slated to be removed, restored, and added to the museum, such as its five-bladed propellers and her radar mast, which included revolutionary radar technology.

Additional spaces of the ship, including its cocktail bars, will be retrieved, spruced up, and added to the museum.

There is no firm timeline yet for the placement of the ship into the ocean, nor is there an opening date for the museum.
