Celebrity Cruises Announces Name of Next Edge-Class Ship

Celebrity Cruises has announced that the name of its fifth Edge-class ship will be Celebrity Xcel, and there are excellent innovations aboard the vessel indeed. The first steel for the ship has been cut and her construction is underway, as the countdown is already on for her November 2025 debut.

Steel Cut for Celebrity Xcel

In a reveal at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, where the new vessel is now officially under construction, Celebrity Cruises has announced that the fifth ship and final ship in the innovative Edge-class series will be named Celebrity Xcel.

“The Edge Series has shattered preconceived notions of cruising, and I am thrilled to announce our next bold step as a brand with Celebrity Xcel,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, Celebrity Cruises’ President. “True to her name, this next ship will ‘Xcel’ beyond her sister ships with entirely new experiences, yet to be revealed, but that will change the game all over again.”

The first steel was cut for the new vessel on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, marking the beginning of her physical construction. The Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard also constructed the previous Edge-class ships: Celebrity Edge (2018), Celebrity Apex (2020), Celebrity Beyond (2022), and the soon-to-set-sail Celebrity Ascent (2023).

The Edge-class vessels have all been innovative, but Celebrity Xcel promises to push that envelope even further and with new distinction. Exactly what new features are in store for travelers have not yet been revealed, but the ship will continue the fine tradition of her predecessors with outstanding experiences and features.

For example, Celebrity Xcel will continue to host the exclusive Retreat resort-within-a-resort space with private spaces for suite guests, including a 2-story sundeck. The popular Rooftop Garden onboard will be expanded for more connection to the ocean and amazing vistas, including expanding over the edge of the ship, and the ship will feature a Daniel Boulud fine dining restaurant for the very best in cuisine.

Furthermore, the ship’s Grand Plaza will be redesigned to bring in more light and air for the central indoor space, giving the ship an unparalleled sense of expansion and spaciousness as it transforms for different uses from day to night.

The Magic Carpet cantilevered, multi-function space will also be a key feature of Celebrity Xcel, providing one-of-a-kind views for sipping cocktails, enjoying dinner, or attending events.

The announcement of the new ship comes just days before the November 22, 2023 debut of Celebrity Ascent, the fourth ship in the class.

Inaugural Season Announced

When she debuts two years from now, Celebrity Xcel will spend her inaugural winter season sailing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. On offer are 7-night Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean itineraries to top ports of call.

Depending on the departure date and itinerary, Celebrity Xcel will be visiting Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Phillipsburg, St. Maarten; Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; and other outstanding destinations in her inaugural season.

The ship’s 5-night maiden voyage is planned for November 18, 2025, with visits to Bimini, Bahamas as well as Cozumel, Mexico, with two full days at sea for her initial guests to enjoy all the features of the new ship.

When booked at double occupancy, Celebrity Xcel will be able to welcome 3,248 passengers to enjoy all her amazing experiences. Stay tuned to Cruise Hive in the coming months as more details about the new ship are revealed and her excellent offerings are announced!

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas Completes Second Sea Trials

One of the most highly anticipated cruise ships in recent years has successfully completed her second set of sea trials, bringing Icon of the Seas one critical step closer to her January 2024 debut.

These most recent tests took place over the course of a week and have confirmed the ship’s technical operation.

Icon of the Seas Finishes Sea Trial Testing

Royal Caribbean International’s much-anticipated Icon of the Seas returned from her second set of sea trials on Monday, November 6, 2023, having aced the testing and proven her capabilities – just 82 days before she will welcome guests for the first time.

The ship’s first set of sea trials was held in June 2023, which were also a resounding success. It is not unusual for vessels to undergo two separate trials, which not only confirm the results but may also test additional systems after controls may have been adjusted. This is particularly true when a ship will be the first of a new class and as innovative as Icon of the Seas.

Different operational systems are tested during sea trials, including navigational controls, safety and emergency responses, maximum speed, braking, turning, and more.

Meyer Turku, the shipyard constructing Icon of the Seas, detailed some of the testing to give eager cruise fans insights into what these sea trials entailed.

“The ship’s noise, vibration, speed, fin stabilizers, automation, and main engine adjustments are tested. During the first test run in June, informal tests and verifications were made that everything works as it should,” said Olli Jantunen, Icon project manager.

Royal Caribbean International confirmed the success of the second set of trials via social media.

“She aced every test,” the cruise line said. “Icon of the Seas successfully finished her final sea trials after eight days and hundreds of inspections at sea.”

This second set of trials began on Sunday, October 29, 2023, and were conducted in the Baltic Sea south of Finland. The ship has now returned to the shipyard for final outfitting before her official delivery to Royal Caribbean International in the coming weeks.

What Remains to Be Done?

Icon of the Seas is now more than 90% constructed, including interior outfitting and design details. Final flourishes must still be installed and the ship must be fully supplied before her January 2024 debut.

For example, the signature carousel on Deck 7 in the ship’s family-oriented Surfside neighborhood has been only partially installed, with the main structure now operational but the figures yet to be added.

Similarly, the first tests of the always-popular FlowRider surf simulator have been a success, and the stunning “Oculus Fall” in the AquaDome has also been tested.

Once the work at the shipyard is complete, Icon of the Seas will be “handed over” to Royal Caribbean International, a final ceremony that signifies her construction is complete and her ownership has changed from the shipyard to the cruise line. From that point on, the ship will officially be part of the Royal Caribbean fleet as she makes her way to her homeport in Miami, Florida.

Icon of the Seas is slated to debut on January 27, 2024 with a 7-night Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day itinerary, visiting St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private destination in the Bahamas.

The ship’s visit to CocoCay is also slated to coincide with the debut of the new adults-only Hideaway Beach expansion on CocoCay, offering guests new ways to relax on the private island.

The ship will offer alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, all with stops at CocoCay. The Western Caribbean voyages will call on Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, with some itineraries also featuring a visit to Roatan, Honduras. Likewise, some Eastern Caribbean itineraries will visit St. Maarten in lieu of St. Kitts.

Depending on departure date and exact itinerary, other ports of call may include the Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic; Labadee, Haiti; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Icon of the Seas will remain homeported from Miami at least through April 2026, with the approximately 250,800-gross-ton vessel welcoming 5,610 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 7,600 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard will be more than 2,300 crew members to ensure that everyone has a truly iconic cruise vacation.

MSC Cruises Amplifies Entertainment Program for Young Passengers

MSC Cruises has unveiled a comprehensive upgrade to its youth entertainment program. Starting in mid-November, the fleet’s Young and Teens Clubs will see extended hours, a variety of new live shows, and many new and engaging activities that promise to elevate the cruise experience for younger guests.

The announcement coincides with the release of a new teen music video set against the backdrop of the picturesque Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, which the cruise line created in cooperation with several well-known YouTube and Social Media stars.

Expanded Offerings for Young Cruise Guests

MSC is extending the offerings for its younger cruise guests, bringing multiple new initiatives to the cruise line’s ships

The program expansion, set to start on November 15, 2023, includes changes to the Young Club for kids aged 12-14 years old and the Teens Club, for teenagers ages 15-17.

The enhanced activity schedule includes daily live entertainment, sports activities, and exclusive dinners where kids get to eat with those in the same age bracket.

Matteo Mancini, Senior Manager of Youth Entertainment at MSC Cruises: “The ever-increasing number of young guests and teenagers on board our ships naturally led us to follow the trends they love most.”

“MSC Cruises offers them an unforgettable 360-degree vacation that starts at home with our original entertainment content on the web and social media, continues on board with our activities organized by our Young & Teens Club, and carries on after the cruise, thanks to the teens themselves who have become our digital creators and ambassadors.

MSC Cruises has one of the more popular youth programs, a feature the cruise line is eager to highlight on its newer vessels like the MSC Euribia. Launched with state-of-the-art facilities tailored for young guests, MSC Euribia offers a spectrum of activities, from innovative educational spaces to technology-driven entertainment in a massive 7,500-square-foot area dedicated to kids.

When people ask us why MSC Cruises has become internationally awarded as “Best Cruise Line for Families” over the years, the answer is simple: we listen to our young guests and build their loyalty. Mancini continues.

One area where MSC Cruises is placing a lot of importance is its social media presence, resulting in collaboration efforts with several well-known YouTube stars, including teen star Merrick Hanna.

MSC Partners with Teen YouTube Stars

A fresh addition to MSC Cruises’ entertainment offerings is an original music video titled “Ocean Cay: A Cabin 12006 Story.” The video follows the two successful web series the cruise line released, “Kelly & Khloe On Board” and “Cabin 12006.”

MSC Cruises’ original entertainment content, produced by our youth division, exceeded 11.9 million web hits, 64 million impressions, and over 4 million interactions between young guests and teenagers via the official hashtags #mscteens #cabin12006,” said Mancini.

Debuting on YouTube on November 6, the video stars Merrick Hanna, a social media influencer with a massive 47 million followers, alongside So You Think You Can Dance Academy participant Sophie Santella; Ralphy Perdomo, who has a massive TikTok following, and Italian YouTube star Sespo.

The video follows a group of young guests while they cruise to MSC Cruises’ popular private island of Ocean Cay while engaging in virtual reality, sports, hip-hop dancing, and finding love.

Carnival Cruise Line Kicks-Off a Week of Special Events

Carnival Cruise Line has begun its special series of events to honor and celebrate military veterans with an appreciation lunch aboard Carnival Horizon in PortMiami, along with a unique donation to help veterans get the services they need.

This is the first of six such tributes planned at different Carnival homeports leading up to Veterans Day on November 11.

Honoring Veterans in Miami

Approximately 200 local Miami-Dade veterans were welcomed aboard Carnival Horizon on Sunday, November 5, 2023 for a special military tribute event that included an appreciation luncheon and special recognition. Carnival Cruise Line is hosting six such events this week in six different US homeports.

“As America’s cruise line, Carnival is privileged to have more active and retired military service members choosing to sail with us than any other cruise line for their much-deserved cruise vacations,” said Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line president.

Part of the tribute event included donating a 15-passenger van to the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The van will help with transporting veterans to different programs and services offered by the VA, including medical appointments.

“It is an honor for us to partner with the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System to show our appreciation to these brave men and women and donate a passenger van to help the center provide convenient transportation to local resources and support services for our military heroes,” said Duffy.

In addition to medical services, the VA offers resources such as emergency preparedness assistance and other special programs.

“We are dedicated to improving the lives of our veterans and their families every day,” said Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System Executive Director Kalautie JangDhari. “I know our veterans appreciate this special event hosted by Carnival Cruise Line. And their generous donation of a passenger van is going to help us to ensure that they can get to their medical appointments easily.”

The hometown veterans tributes come just as Carnival Cruise Line is also introducing a special “Heroes American Pale Ale” on all ships with onboard breweries. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the ale will be donated to Operation Homefront for even more support of military members and their families.

More Tribute Events All Week Long

The Miami tribute event kicks off a full week of events, as the cruise line has organized five other events in other homeports that will feature onboard luncheons for local veterans as well as van donations to each homeport’s VA office.

On the same day as Miami’s tribute, veterans were also welcomed aboard the recently renovated Carnival Paradise in Tampa.

Carnival Breeze in Galveston, Texas is hosting a military tribute event on Monday, November 6, while Carnival Miracle will welcome veterans in Long Beach, California on Tuesday, November 7. Carnival Valor will do the same on Thursday, November 9 for veterans in New Orleans, Louisiana.

One of the cruise line’s largest ships, Mardi Gras, will host the final veterans’ tribute event at Port Canaveral, Florida on Veterans Day itself – Saturday, November 11.

In addition to the special homeport events that will host veterans from the local community, every Carnival ship in the fleet will host a Military Appreciation Day this week – as they do on every sailing, all year long.

Military Appreciation Day was introduced in July 2023 as an expansion of what were formerly Military Appreciation Gatherings. The events include shipwide announcements to thank military service members and veterans, special messages on the Seaside Theater screen, raising the US flag in the ship’s atrium (on sailings four nights or longer), commemorative pins for all veterans, and additional special activities.

All veterans who join in the Military Appreciation Day events can also be entered into a monthly drawing for a free Carnival cruise awarded to a service member.

In 2023, Carnival Cruise Line will host more than 1,500 military gatherings, honoring tens of thousands of veterans and active service members and their families.

Carnival Cruise Ship In Trouble With Engine Difficulties

Carnival Panorama has developed engine difficulties that have impacted the ship’s maximum cruising speed, and as a result, two ports of call have been cancelled on her current sailing.

No other onboard systems are impacted, and the ship will still be able to return to Long Beach, California on schedule for debarkation on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Carnival Panorama Skipping Ports of Call

Guests onboard Carnival Panorama have been notified of an itinerary change that is resulting in two out of three ports of call being cancelled on the ship’s current cruise. The sailing departed Long Beach, California on Saturday, November 4, on what was to have been a 7-night Mexican Riviera itinerary.

The cruise was originally scheduled to visit three popular ports of call – Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and Cabo San Lucas. Now, however, two of those stops have been cancelled.

“The ship has developed an issue that is affecting its maximum cruising speed only,” a letter delivered to guests’ staterooms explained. “Regrettably, due to the reduced speed, we will not be able to visit Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán.”

Carnival Panorama will still call on Cabo San Lucas, but the visit has been changed to Wednesday, November 8 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. instead of as originally planned on Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The extra 90 minutes in port will give guests slightly more time to explore the vibrant and scenic destination, as it is now the only port of call on the week-long cruise.

It must be noted that the ship’s safety systems and onboard operations, including hotel operations, food and beverage, and entertainment, are not impacted by the technical issue.

Only the ship’s maximum cruising speed of 22.6 knots (26 miles per hour / 42 kilometers per hour) is affected, which changes the distance the vessel can sail and still keep her schedule.

Compensation Offered

All shore excursions purchased through Carnival Cruise Line for Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán are being automatically cancelled and refunded to guests’ onboard accounts.

The ship’s Shore Excursions team is working with tour operators in Cabo San Lucas to adjust booked tours to Wednesday rather than Thursday, but guests will be notified if such adjustments are not possible.

As compensation for missing ports of call, all staterooms are also being given a $400 onboard credit to use for drinks, specialty dining, spa treatments, or other onboard purchases.

“We apologize for this situation and appreciate your understanding,” the letter, signed by Captain Carlo Queirolo, concludes.

Previous Engine Issues

This is not the first time Carnival Panorama has had engine issues impacting her cruising speed and planned itineraries.

In early June, the ship was delayed returning to Long Beach because of engine issues, which created embarkation delays for the next sailing. Further sailings at that time were also impacted with adjusted itineraries to compensate for the reduced speeds.

Onboard engineers are always able to work to correct technical problems, but occasionally special parts or different expertise may be required for permanent repairs. It is unclear whether or not this current issue with Carnival Panorama is an extension of her earlier difficulties or a new technical problem.

At this time, it is unknown whether or not additional upcoming sailings of the ship may be affected, though guests booked on sailings in the next few weeks will want to stay alert to possible itinerary changes or delays.

Carnival Panorama also experienced very similar issues in August 2021, with adjustments to port visit times and delayed returns to Long Beach. The same types of problems were also noted in December 2022.

The 133,868-gross-ton, Vista-class ship can welcome 4,008 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 5,146 passengers when fully booked. Also onboard are more than 1,400 crew members to ensure that all travelers have a memorable and fun cruise vacation, despite any unexpected difficulties.

Largest-Ever Princess Cruise Ship Out of Texas Begins Sailings

We don’t often hear of Princess Cruises sailing out of Texas, but that will become more common with Regal Princess becoming the largest in the fleet ever to make the Port of Galveston a homeport. The cruise line has now welcomed guests onboard as the vessel kicks off an inaugural season from the port with Western Caribbean voyages.

Regal Princess Debuts in Galveston, Texas

Princess Cruises joins Carnival Cruise Line, Disney, Royal Caribbean International, and Norwegian Cruise Line at the Port of Galveston, with Regal Princess becoming the largest in the fleet to sail from the port. The ship welcomed guests in Texas for the first time on Sunday, November 5, 2023 and held a traditional maritime plaque ceremony onboard to commemorate the occasion.

Princess Cruises Chief Commercial Officer Terry Thornton, who attended the ceremony, said, “We first started sailing out of Galveston nearly 20 years ago. Princess loves Texas and we know Texans enjoy the convenience of having the Love Boat so close by offering a hassle-free drive or convenient fly option to enjoy the beautiful destinations in the Western Caribbean.”

The event was hosted by Celebrations Ambassador Jill Whelan and included a performance by Galveston’s local Ball High School Drill Team, the Tornettes, along with an appearance of the school’s mascot named Tuffy.

Along with Thornton and Whelan, there were other key people in attendance, including the ship’s captain Aldo Traverso and Galveston Wharves Board Vice Chairman Jeff Patterson.

“As we celebrate the arrival of Regal Princess, we extend our deep appreciation to the Port of Galveston for their ongoing partnership, and we’re excited to welcome aboard the only premium cruise experience from Galveston,” said Thornton.

Regal Princess Caribbean Season From Galveston

Regal Princess‘ first sailing from the Lone Star State is 7-night Western Caribbean sailing, featuring stops in Costa Maya, Roatan, and Cozumel before returning to Galveston on Sunday, November 12.

The ship will now offer a series of 21 voyages from Texas, with 7-, 10-, and 11-night itineraries on offer. Depending on the sailing date and cruise length, ports of call may also include Belize City, Belize; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

“Princess Cruises is an iconic cruise line and we’re delighted to welcome guests from Regal Princess, the largest Love Boat to ever sail from Galveston,” said Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves port director and CEO.

“Regal Princess will visit beautiful ports throughout the western Caribbean while expanding the array of attractive and enticing cruise vacation choices from Galveston, America’s fourth most popular homeport.”

Of special note is the December 3, 2023 sailing, a themed “Love and Romance Celebration” cruise with Princess Cruises’ Love Ambassador and bridal fashion icon Randy Fenoli. During the cruise there will be special events featuring the bridal icon, including tips for how to choose the right wedding dress and the debut of the “Randy” cocktail.

Regal Princess will leave Galveston on Sunday, March 24, 2024 with a 12-night Caribbean Islander itinerary. The ship will visit Cozumel, Aruba, Curacao, Antigua, and the British Virgin Islands on her way to Fort Lauderdale, where she will arrive on Friday, April 5.

From Fort Lauderdale, the ship will make a transatlantic crossing to Southampton, where she will begin her European summer season sailing the British Isles, Scotland, and France. She will return to Galveston in October 2024 for a second season sailing from Texas.

The 142,229-gross-ton, Royal-class Regal Princess features 19 decks and amazing features, including the glass-floor SeaWalk that extends 28 feet beyond the ship’s edge for thrilling views. The ship also offers spectacular entertainment, including the Watercolor Fantasy Show, live music, and outstanding production shows.

Onboard, guests will also find delicious dining at the Crown Grill, Chef’s Table Lumiere, Alfredo’s Pizzeria and more, as well as pools, hot tubs, the sports court, the just-for-adults Sanctuary, and so much more.

Regal Princess can welcome 3,560 guests per sailing (at double occupancy), and there are over 1,300 crew members onboard to ensure everyone truly gets the Princess treatment.

Carnival Flagship Hosts Largest Ever Casino Slot Tournament

Carnival Celebration hosted the largest ever $1 million casino slot tournament aboard Carnival Cruise Line during the ship’s most recent sailing, awarding impressive prizes to the top 100 players, including grand prize of $500,000. More than 1,600 players participated in the event, and two additional competitions are already planned for 2024 and again in 2025.

Largest Casino Slot Tournament in Carnival History

A total of 1,691 guests aboard the October 29, 2023 departure of Carnival Celebration set casino history as part of the largest ever slot tournament the cruise line has hosted. The $1M Slot Tournament is a popular event for novice slot players and experienced casino guests alike, particularly with amazing prizes awarded.

The top 100 players in the tournament were awarded prizes, and a $500,000 grand prize was presented to the winner, Rhonda Anderson, on Thursday evening, November 2, 2023. The second place winner, Courtney Paschal, was awarded $150,000, while third place winner, Robert Blevins, earned $50,000.

“Carnival has a history as an industry leader with our casinos and our $1M Slot Tournament not only exemplifies that, but it celebrates it,” said Jonathan Lask, Carnival’s vice president of CRM and performance marketing.

“Our onboard casinos bring fun and excitement to our Carnival Players Club members on all our ships, and this week has been a great way to bring many of those valued guests together and amplify the enthusiasm.”

Slot tournaments are a fast-paced, intense competition for guests to rack up the most points or totals, depending on how the competition is organized.

For this record-breaking competition, Carnival Celebration was sailing a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary that departed Miami, Florida on Sunday, October 29. The ship visited Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico as well as Roatan, Honduras during the cruise, along with three days at sea for guests to enjoy not only the casino, but all the other features of the Excel-class ship.

Carnival Celebration is currently the largest ship in the Carnival fleet at 182,521 gross tons, and can welcome 5,282 guests aboard at double occupancy. Also onboard are 1,700 international crew members to ensure everyone feels like a winner – whether they enter the slot tournaments or not.

More Competitions Coming in 2024 and 2025

With the great success of this most recent tournament, Carnival Cruise Line is already planning two $1M Slot Tournaments for 2024 on the cruise line’s other Excel-class ships – the upcoming Carnival Jubilee as well as the first of the Excel-class, Mardi Gras.

The tournament aboard Carnival Jubilee will be during the ship’s May 18, 2024 sailing from Galveston, Texas, a 7-night cruise visiting Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.

The second $1M Slot Tournament of the year will be aboard Mardi Gras on the ship’s November 2, 2024 sailing from Port Canaveral, Florida. That voyage is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise that will visit Nassau, Amber Cove, and Grand Turk.

Another pair of $1M Slot Tournaments will also be held in 2025, this time aboard Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee. The first will be the May 17, 2025 departure of Carnival Celebration, an 8-night Southern Caribbean itinerary from Miami, Florida with visits to Bonaire, Aruba, and Curacao.

The second of the 2025 tournaments is planned aboard Carnival Jubilee‘s November 1, 2025 sailing, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise to Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.

Carnival Paradise Casino

At this time, no large-scale slot tournaments have been announced for other ships in the Carnival fleet, though smaller, individual tournaments are held on many cruises.

For card players, blackjack tournaments are currently planned for Carnival Panorama (May 4, 2024); Carnival Dream (September 7, 2024); and Carnival Magic (October 19, 2024). For each of those events, prizes will total $50,000.

Passenger Overboard During Norwegian Cruise Ship Charter

A somber event cast a shadow on Norwegian Pearl during the Lamb of God Headbangers Boat charter cruise, when a guest went overboard in the early hours of November 3, 2023. The incident unfolded as the ship sailed near the Bahamas, on its way back to Miami, Florida

A search for the missing passenger was quickly initiated. However, after a nine-hour search, the Captain of Norwegian Pearl was forced to cancel the search and rescue mission, and the vessel resumed her course to PortMiami.

Man Overboard Norwegian Pearl

A 41-year-old male went overboard the Norwegian Pearl on Friday, November 3, as the vessel was making her way from Nassau to Port Miami.

The alarming situation was promptly addressed by the ship’s crew as they initiated a search and rescue operation.

A statement released by a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line to Rock Feed read: “On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami.”

“The authorities have been notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Norwegian Pearl, a 93,530 gross tons Jewel-class cruise ship with a capacity to accommodate 2,394 guests, set sail from Miami on October 31. The itinerary included a day at sea, a call to Nassau, Bahamas, followed by another day at sea, with a return to Miami scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2023.

The Headbangers Boat cruise was a special charter voyage, offering a unique blend of heavy metal music with the popular metal band Lamb of God as the headliner. The charter cruise was organized by Sixthman, which is in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line.

Eyewitness Account

Frank Godla, CEO of MetalSucks and Metal Injection, provided a detailed account of the incident as it unfolded on board the Norwegian Pearl on the MetalSucks website. According to Godla, the vessel made a sharp turn around 3:30 AM, around the time that the passenger went overboard.

Approximately 20 minutes later, the ship’s captain informed the passengers of the distressing news that a guest had gone overboard, initiating a search and rescue mission.

Frank Godla: “Around 3:30 a.m. I was woken up by some really choppy waters and the boat making a hard u-turn that left me wondering what’s going on. Roughly 20 minutes later, the captain made us aware a passenger went overboard and a search and rescue mission has begun.”

By around 6 AM, guests were informed that the scheduled program would be paused until 1 PM.

The search for the missing passenger continued for around nine hours in total, after which the Captain decided to resume course to PortMiami. The inclement weather during the night of November 3, plus the limited visibility, made finding the passenger impossible.

He recalled: “An hour ago, the captain had to make a very sad announcement to all onboard that after 9 hours of searching, they have no choice but to conclude the rescue mission and resume course to Miami.”

Despite the shocking events, guests onboard remained understanding of the situation and appreciated the actions taken by the Captain, the ship’s crew, and the festival organization. Norwegian Cruise Line and the United States Coast Guard are working together to uncover the details of the incident.

Unfortunately, man-overboard situations happen routinely, be it because of foul play, an accident, or because of excessive alcohol abuse. While cruise ships have several safeguards to prevent accidents from happening, and ships perform extensive training on rescue responses, the fact of the matter is that the chances of surviving a fall from a cruise ship while at open sea are slim.

Carnival Cruise Passengers Pull Off Art Heist

Two passengers aboard a Carnival cruise ship swiped a pair of art pieces valued at nearly $13,000, but a search warrant has successfully recovered both small sculptures. While the passengers have not yet been charged with the theft, further legal action could be taken.

Security Footage Shows Art Theft

High-stakes art heists are normally the focus of mystery novels or dramatic films, but a real-life theft took place aboard a Carnival cruise ship just weeks ago.

Two passengers aboard Carnival Legend in late September on a sailing from Baltimore to Bermuda allegedly stole two sculptures from the art gallery, removing them from the ship without authorization. The individuals did not bid in an onboard art auction or otherwise purchase the artwork.

Court documents for a search warrant were filed on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 in federal court in Baltimore, Maryland. With that warrant, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted an appropriate search and recovered the missing sculptures.

According to ABC News, security footage from the cruise ship was instrumental in recognizing the theft and identifying the individuals involved, a man and a woman. One of the ship’s onboard art auctioneers had noticed the sculptures were missing on Sunday, October 1, the day after the ship had returned from its previous sailing.

Security footage was reviewed and showed two individuals enter the ship’s art gallery empty-handed on September 29 at approximately 2 a.m., then leave several minutes later carrying items “consistent in appearance with the missing sculptures,” according to the filed court documents.

The individuals were then identified, and one person’s appearance was correlated with a recent social media account photo that seemed to show the same distinctive attire as seen in the surveillance footage.

Though the sculptures have been recovered, the two individuals’ names have not been released because federal charges of theft and transportation of stolen goods may yet be filed.

About the Stolen Sculptures

Cruise ships have a wide range of artwork onboard, ranging from stunning paintings and prints to sculptures of all sizes and styles. The two sculptures that were stolen are both acrylic pieces.

One is by artist Robert Wyland depicting two sea turtles facing one another, titled “Kiss the Sea” with wave-like formations at the base. The limited edition piece, crafted in 2019, measures 13 5/8″ by 14 3/8″ by 4 1/4″, and has Wyland’s hand-engraved signature. Wyland has done several similar pieces depicting dolphins, whales, and even mermaids. Court documents set the value of the piece at $6,200.

Wyland’s artwork is especially familiar to cruise travelers, as the artist created the hull art for Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss with a similar ocean life motif.

The second stolen – now recovered – piece is by artist Marcus Glenn and is titled “Tappin’ the Keys for Love.” Similar in materials to Wyland’s sculpture, this piece shows a man playing a piano keyboard with a red heart in the background. Music motifs are common in Glenn’s work, and this piece is valued at $6,600.

Art auctions onboard all Carnival cruise ships are conducted by Park West Gallery. Paintings, sculptures, lithographs, autographed items, and other special pieces are often included, though the collections vary on different ships and different sailings. Collections may also be curated to the sailing region to generate even more interest, such as works depicting Alaska on Alaska cruises.

In addition to Carnival Cruise Line, Park West Gallery also handles art auctions on more than 90 ships worldwide, including aboard Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and Princess Cruises.
