Carnival Cruise Line Discourages Certain Guests From Top Activity

All experienced cruisers know that Carnival Cruise Line is one of the top choices if you enjoy comedy acts onboard, as the signature Punchliner Comedy Club offers multiple shows and often multiple comedians on every sailing.

Those shows are not for everyone, however, and after regular complaints about comedy content, the cruise line has made an official request for some guests to stay away.

The new “instruction” – which is just a suggestion and not an official guideline or requirement of any sort – comes from Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald.

Each week, Heald responds to hundreds of questions, comments, and suggestions from guests and Carnival fans through his popular Facebook page. The subject of the Punchliner Comedy Club comes up regularly.

“Every week, every single week in the hundreds of questions that I answer, I always have somebody who writes and is not happy with the material the comedians use, doesn’t like the fact that an R-rated show is R-rated,” Heald explained. “All of that kind of thing I understand and I respect.”

Heald has regularly acknowledged that not every activity or amenity onboard the 27 ships in the Carnival fleet will appeal to everyone. That is the beauty of a cruise vacation, as there is always something different going on and passengers can choose what interests them the most.

“The one thing that does really drive me crazy,” Heald said, “Is if you think you’re going to be offended, if you’re not 100 percent certain you’re going to enjoy the show, don’t sit there.”

In the video, filmed in the Punchliner aboard the Excel-class Mardi Gras, Heald was pointing out the front row and even the first few rows of chairs. He noted that guests should not choose such visible, prime seating if they aren’t sure whether or not the comedic material will be right for them.

Instead, he recommends that uncertain comedy show guests should choose seats closer to the back and the entrance to the club. That way, if they find the show does not appeal to them, they will be more easily able to leave without disturbing others or attracting unwanted attention.

It should be noted that comedians often interact with show guests in the first few rows of seating. If travelers are not comfortable with that attention, which could turn even more uncomfortable if they choose to leave, it is best to select more out-of-the-way seats.

“Doing stand-up comedy these days is harder than ever because of the world of offense that we all live in,” Heald acknowledged. “If you’re not sure that you’re going to laugh out loud from beginning to end, do not sit there thinking this not for me, I’m offended at what he or she said.”

Instead, Heald explained, it’s best if guests leave to find something that will make them happy. An extra slice of pizza, a stroll through the retail shops, a soak in the hot tub, or even a contest of mini-golf – there is always something else to enjoy.

Carnival’s Onboard Comedy Shows

Carnival Cruise Line does offer both PG and R-rated comedy shows. Typically, the more adult-themed R-rated shows are later in the evening, while the PG shows are at earlier showtimes. The cruise line has considered earlier adult-themed shows, but they are not universally offered across the fleet.

Material between the two performances may be similar, but the family-friendly versions do not have the “salty” language and may avoid the most controversial topics.

Unfortunately, with more and more topics in society today being considered controversial, it can be challenging for a comedian to develop appropriate material to appeal to a diverse crowd.

Prior to the R-rated shows – which are only for guests 18 years and older – the comedy club host does typically offer warnings about the nature of the content and that the show is intended for adults only.

There are also automated announcements played in the time leading up to the show, ensuring that everyone is aware that it is R-rated. Signs are also posted at the door indicating the show is only for those 18 and older.

Carnival Ship Will Sail Without Some VIFP Benefits

Carnival Cruise Line has issued an advisory to its Diamond and Platinum level guests sailing on Carnival Splendor on August 24, 2024. The adjustments are in response to the unusually high number of VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) guests booked on the voyage.

The cruise line will not be able to offer priority embarkation or debarkation for the 16-night cruise from Singapore to Sydney, including at any ports of call, which include Jakarta and Lombok, Indonesia, and Darwin, Airlie Beach, and Moreton, Australia.

The cruise line has also indicated that Diamond guests may not have guaranteed access to main dining room seating.

Additionally, staterooms will not be available until after 1:30 p.m. on the day of embarkation. Once onboard, guests are encouraged to drop off any carry-on luggage in their staterooms before proceeding to lunch.

“The operational changes are consistent with other Carnival Journeys cruises where we have had a large number of Diamond and Platinum guests,” said Colleen Oliverio, vice president of guest services at Carnival Cruises. “We apologize for any disappointment and thank you for your understanding.”

This not the first time VIFP benefits have been altered. A transatlantic crossing on Carnival Freedom and Carnival Venezia’s Journeys’ voyage in the Caribbean, each in September 2023, had similar loyalty benefits suspended.

Exclusive Perks for high-tiered VIFPs

Carnival Cruise Line’s VIFP Club, which launched in 2012, is designed to reward loyal guests with a range of perks and privileges. Among the most prestigious tiers are the Diamond and Platinum levels, reserved for Carnival’s most frequent cruisers.

Platinum members who have sailed on 75 or more nights with Carnival typically receive perks such as priority check-in and boarding, complimentary beverage vouchers, and access to an exclusive onboard party. They also benefit for priority spa reservations and guaranteed main dining room seating.

Diamond members, the highest tier, are those who have sailed on 200 days or more with Carnival. In addition to all the benefits provided to Platinum members, Diamond members receive even more enhanced perks.

These include unlimited complimentary laundry service, a dedicated Diamond member phone line, a one-time complimentary meal at a specialty restaurant, an invitation to an exclusive cocktail reception with the captain, and guaranteed reservations for sold-out shore excursions.

Carnival Journeys, typically 9 to 16 days in length, are a collection of longer cruises designed to provide an immersive and unique vacation experience. As longer voyages, these are particularly appealing to members of the VIFP program to maintain their status, making it difficult for the cruise line to accommodate all benefits.

Despite the adjustments, Diamond and Platinum members aboard Carnival Splendor will still retain several of their core benefits, including priority spa reservations, Chocolate Delight delivered via room service, VIFP swag, and a complimentary beverage.

The beverage, a “thank you” to VIFP members, was recently adjusted in July 2024, and the cruise line has hinted for months that an overhaul to the VIFP program is forthcoming. Some changes have already been implemented, including the removal of a $25 FunPlay ship credit in the casino and a donation to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.

New Controversy Emerges Over Cruising Ducks in Port

Cruising ducks may seem like a fun, innocent pastime onboard – hiding quirky rubber ducks for others to find – but what about when the game disembarks the ship in a port of call?

A recent incident has come to light on social media and started another debate about what should and should not be done with cruise-related ducks.

The idea of leaving ducks at cruise tour sites was first brought up on an NCL Reddit thread, and fans of ducks were quick to chime in with their thoughts on the situation when a duck was hidden in Naples, Italy.

“Just saw a post about someone leaving one of those stupid cruise ducks at a what looks to be an historic aqueduct in Naples, Italy,” the original poster explained. “I think it’s bad enough doing that on the actual ships, but to leave them at UNESCO heritage sites? … People that is pretty much littering. Just don’t!”

Obviously, the original poster is not a fan of cruising ducks even onboard ships where hundreds of passengers may join in the activity with themed ducks of all sizes, shapes, and colors.

Still, the idea of leaving ducks in locations off the ship has struck a nerve even with travelers who enjoy the game.

“I actually like a bit of ducks onboard but totally agree with you. Keep them on the ship or on you.”

“The ducks are for the ship. No where else.”

Some commenters wondered if perhaps the duck had simply been dropped, perhaps by a child carrying the toy during a tour. If that was the case, the accidental transgression could possibly be excused.

Further clarification was offered, however, that the individuals who hid the duck on land did so on purpose, delighting in extending the game off the ship.

The exact date or cruise line related to this incident has not been disclosed, though the location was mentioned as Naples, Italy.

Dozens of ships are visiting Naples this month alone, including vessels from MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Costa Cruises, Virgin Voyages, and more.

The original discussion post was in a Norwegian Cruise Line subthread. Just in the past two weeks, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Escape, and Norwegian Viva have all visited Naples.

What’s the Harm?

Onboard a cruise ship, hiding, finding, and enjoying ducks may be an innocent and sometimes competitive game, but what’s the harm when the ducks take flight off the ship?

Different commenters have rightly pointed out that to leave a duck unattended in a public space in a port of call is littering, which is certainly a violation of local laws.

Furthermore, tour sites are not exclusively for the use of cruise guests, and therefore expanding the game is impinging on others’ visits to amazing locations.

Cruise guests who deliberately leave ducks off the ship may be held accountable for littering, including any fines or other penalties from local authorities.

Cruise lines have, for the most part, remained tolerant of the activity onboard ships, as the general rules of cruising ducks try to keep the activity inclusive, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

Disney Cruise Line is the only one to have made a strong attempt to discourage hiding ducks onboard their ships, though the activity is not officially banned.

“According to our policy, guests are allowed to bring rubber ducks onboard,” Disney Cruise Line said earlier this year. “However, it’s important to note that pool toys, including rubber ducks, are not permitted to be used in the pools. Additionally, we kindly request that guests are not allowed to hide items such as rubber ducks in public areas or staterooms.”

Carnival Cruise Line, on the other hand, has addressed the issue of cruising ducks several times, and will not ban the activity nor prevent crew members from participating if they wish.

Still, cruise guests should confine the activity to appropriate spaces onboard their cruise ship and not take ducks off the ship to hide locally in port.

Despite the best intentions for spreading the fun of the game, doing so is a clear instance of littering and can leave a negative impression of cruise travelers in local communities who so generously welcome visitors.

Carnival Cruise Cancelled for Charter Sailing

Guests looking forward to an autumn sailing next year aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty have been notified that their ship has been chartered and their cruise cancelled.

The impacted voyage is the October 19, 2025 departure, which does give affected guests more than a year to make different cruise vacation plans.

Carnival Cruise Line reached out with the news on Thursday, August 15, 2024 – more than 14 months before the now-cancelled cruise was to have set sail from New Orleans.

“We are very sorry to inform you that the ship has been chartered and your cruise has been cancelled,” the notification read. “We have a variety of alternatives and are confident you will find another Carnival cruise that is filled with an equal amount of fun.”

The cruise line is offering booked guests both rescheduling and cancellation options with no fee. If travelers want to plan a different Carnival cruise, their overall fare rate will be protected “on a comparable sailing, in similar accommodations.” The replacement cruise does not need to be aboard Carnival Liberty or sailing from New Orleans.

Some terms and conditions do apply to replacement cruises, however. Holiday cruises or voyages to Alaska, Hawaii, or Europe are not eligible for the fare protection.

Similarly, chartered cruises are not eligible. Any replacement cruise may be no longer than the original cruise length, but shorter cruises could be chosen if preferred.

If guests do rebook on an alternative sailing, they will also receive a $100 (USD) onboard credit to enjoy on their new cruise.

If travelers prefer not to book a different cruise or don’t find one that works for their vacation plans, however, they will receive a full refund of the cruise fare, including the deposit, any pre-paid add-on items, and any taxes or other fees. This also applies to any Early Saver reservations and no fee will be deducted from the refund.

Refunds will be processed automatically if impacted guests do not contact Carnival Cruise Line or their travel agent to book an alternative sailing by Thursday, August 29, 2024. Depending on individual financial institutions, refunds may take up to three weeks to process.

Why the Cancellation?

Carnival Liberty‘s October 19, 2025 departure was to have been a 7-night sailing. The 110,428-gross-ton, Conquest-class ship is homeported year-round from New Orleans, offering 7-night cruises on both Eastern and Western Caribbean routes, with occasional 6- and 8-night options.

During her Eastern Caribbean cruises, Carnival Liberty visits ports such as Key West, Freeport, Nassau, Half Moon Cay, and beginning in the summer of 2025, Celebration Key – Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination on Grand Bahama Island.

The Western Caribbean sailings may visit Roatan, Belize, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, or Jamaica. Exact ports of call vary based on departure date and cruise length.

Other than the notice that the sailing has been chartered, Carnival Cruise Line has not announced what company or event will be taking place on board. To be clear, the ship is not being taken out of service for any sort of refurbishment or repairs, but will simply be sailing a private cruise at that time.

Different companies offer chartered sailings for music festivals, fan events such as the popular Star Trek cruise, or lifestyle cruises such as nudist sailings or LGBT voyages. Chartered cruises may even be arranged by large companies as a corporate retreat or teambuilding event.

While canceling a cruise in favor of a chartered sailing can be disappointing for already-booked guests, cruise lines do try to provide such notification as far in advance as possible so guests can make alternative vacation plans.

With 14 months to go before Carnival Liberty‘s new charter sailing, guests have plenty of time and hundreds of Carnival cruises to choose from for their next oceangoing getaway.

Carnival Vista to Be Repaired at Homeport, Next Sailing to Go Ahead

Guests boarding Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Vista on Sunday, August 18, 2024 are relieved to learn that their 6-night Eastern Caribbean sailing will go ahead as planned following repairs to the ship’s propulsion system.

Booked guests were notified on Thursday, August 15 of the plan for their cruise, which does include a slight modification on embarkation day with a later-than-typical departure planned.

“This week, our shipboard and shoreside technical teams have been working to resolve an issue that is limiting Carnival Vista’s cruising speed. Otherwise, there is no impact to ship operations,” the notification email explained.

“To accommodate our repair plan, the ship will be arriving very early Sunday morning, August 18, to Port Canaveral (approximately 3:30 AM) to allow for a full day of work with our engineers and technical experts. We are also planning a later departure that evening to maximize the workday, but given the sea day on Monday, this will not affect our arrival time for Half Moon Cay on Tuesday, August 20.”

The exact departure time was not listed in the email, and will likely depend on how quickly repairs can be finished on Sunday. Nevertheless, the ship is sure to set sail as soon as possible.

Guests are advised to stick with their original cruise terminal arrival appointments on Sunday, despite the ship’s later departure that evening. Certain venues onboard, however, will not be able to open until the ship reaches international waters, including the casino and retail shops.

The 1,450 international team members onboard, however, are sure to be planning additional activities and entertainment for that first evening. All the rest of the ship’s amenities, including the Punchliner comedy club, Serenity Deck, SportSquare ropes course, waterslides, and more will be operating as normal.

Carnival Vista developed a technical problem affecting its top speed at the very end of her August 4 sailing, which resulted in a slight delay as the ship returned to Port Canaveral.

The next cruise, however, was dramatically impacted. The planned 8-night Southern Caribbean cruise to Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Turk had to become a Bahamas itinerary instead to permit repairs.

This understandably made guests on the next sailing – the August 18 departure – nervous about whether or not their cruise might be altered or outright cancelled if more extensive repairs were needed. Fortunately, that will not be the case.

The upcoming itinerary includes not only the private island of Half Moon Cay, but also a visit to Grand Turk on Wednesday, August 21 followed by Amber Cove on Thursday, August 22. At this time, there are no changes planned to the overall itinerary.

Another full day at sea will follow the port visits as the ship makes her way back to Port Canaveral for debarkation on Saturday, August 24.

Embarking guests are naturally happy with the news, as are guests booked on upcoming sailings in the next few weeks.

The 133,596-gross-ton Carnival Vista is homeported year-round from Port Canaveral. She offers a selection of 6- and 8-night Caribbean sailings, including Eastern and Southern itineraries, both of which are popular options for both new and experienced cruisers.

Depending on the cruise length and departure date, Carnival Vista visits such top destinations as San Juan, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao, and more.

Beginning in August 2025, the ship will also be one of the first to visit the upcoming Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination under construction on Grand Bahama Island.

A History of Difficulties

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Carnival Vista has experienced propulsion difficulties. The ship had an unexpected emergency dry dock in 2019 due to similar difficulties, and had also had propulsion problems in 2016 as well as more recently in 2022.

This repeated history of problems – always with the propulsion system – has made guests familiar with the ship nervous about any upcoming cruises when such difficulties arise again. While the exact details of each breakdown have not been released, it can be troubling that the same critical system is always impacted.

Hopefully, the issues this time have been minor, and the extended embarkation day will ensure a thorough repair so Carnival Vista can sail at her typical speed of 18 knots without difficulty.

Carnival Cruise Line Announces New Executive Vice President

Carnival Cruise Line has announced a leadership change, with Ben Clement set to become the Executive Vice President of Maritime & New Builds starting January 2025. Clement will succeed Lars Ljoen, who will transition to a new role as Chief Maritime Officer at Carnival Corporation.

Clement, with nearly three decades at Carnival, has been instrumental in the development and innovation of the cruise line’s fleet as the Vice President, New Builds & Refurbishment.

“Ben has continually pushed us to think about ship design, features, venues, and products in ways that have helped redefine Carnival, grow guest loyalty, and build a vibrant customer base that has propelled our growth,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

She continued, “He is also an outstanding mariner, with vast knowledge and experience acquired during his time in the French navy, merchant marine, and shipyard management.

“That unique combination of talent and experience across so many aspects of maritime operations will allow us to maintain our leadership in operational and cultural excellence,” she said.

Clement joined Carnival in 1996 and has since played a pivotal role in the design, refurbishment, and construction of the cruise line’s expansive 27-ship fleet

Under his leadership, Carnival Cruise Line introduced several innovative ship classes, such as the 130,00-gross-ton Dream Class, the 133,500-gross-ton Vista Class, and 180,000-gross-ton Excel Class, which debuted in 2009, 2106, and 2024, respectively.

He also pioneered features like the first roller coaster at sea, Carnival Jubilee’s BOLT.

Before his tenure at Carnival, Clement served as a navigation officer in the French navy and held various positions on merchant ships. He also managed a shipyard in Toulon, France.

Clement’s academic credentials include a diploma of merchant marine officer from the Ecole Nationale Superieure Maritime French Navy officers’ school in Marseille, France, where he was valedictorian, and an executive program certificate from the Stanford University School of Business in Northern California

Clement to Steer Next Phase of Growth

In his new role, Clement will oversee Carnival’s maritime operations, technical operations, and compliance functions. During this time, Carnival Cruise line will introduce five new ships, starting in 2027, including a new, yet-to-be-named class of ship.

In July 2024, Carnival Cruise Line announced it will add two new sister Excel-class ships following the successful launch of Mardi GrasCarnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, which debuted in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively, each of which can accommodate 6,500 passengers.

Carnival Jubilee, which embarked on its inaugural voyage from Galveston, Texas, on December 23, 2023, quickly gained popularity for its impressive features and guest experiences. It was named Best New Cruise Ship of the year by Cruise Hive.

A new order for three additional ships slated for delivery in the summers of 2029, 2031, and 2033. The vessels, which are part of a new class weighing nearly 230,000 gross registered tons each, will be constructed at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Clement will be based in Carnival Cruise Line’s Miami headquarters, which is in the process of relocating. The transition plan at the cruise line involves backfilling his current position.

Air Conditioning Failure Causes Ship Fire, Injures Crew Members

A machine room fire aboard Adora Mediterranea while the ship was docked in Jeju, South Korea injured three crew members. While damage was done to the ship, the vessel has been certified as safe to sail and has resumed sailing to return to her homeport in China.

The incident happened on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, while the ship was enjoying a port of call visit to Jeju. According to The Korea Times, the fire was reported to the local Jeju Coast Guard at 8:37 a.m. with smoke billowing from the ship’s starboard side.

The fire was extinguished by the onboard safety systems, including the ship’s sprinklers, shortly thereafter.

Approximately 50 square meters of the vessel’s machine room – more commonly known as the engine room – was burned, which included the ceiling and adjacent pipes. The overall extent of the damage has not been announced, but it appears that no critical onboard systems have been impacted.

Three crew members were treated for smoke inhalation, but no other severe injuries were reported. The names and positions of the crew members have not been released.

There is no indication that any guest areas were involved, though the smoke did penetrate through to guest areas. Many passengers were already off the ship enjoying a day in Jeju at the time of the fire.

Some of those still onboard were evacuated until the situation was under control, but no guest injuries were reported.

Announcements were made onboard to keep guests apprised of the situation, and an explanatory letter was also delivered to guests’ staterooms.

“We are very sorry to inform you that today … the air conditioning system failed during the stopover of the Mediterranea in Jeju, South Korea,” the letter read. “The [ship] is undergoing relevant maintenance, which will have an impact on the follow-up itinerary of this cruise.”

Adora Mediterranea was thoroughly inspected and certified safe to resume her cruise by marine safety officers, though her departure from Jeju was delayed. All guests were accommodated in hotels in Jeju on Wednesday night, without charge.

The ship remained docked in Jeju for further repairs and inspections on Thursday, which cancelled the planned call to Fukuoka, Japan.

Adora Cruises arranged a complimentary tour of Jeju for all guests for the unexpected extra day in port, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the unique culture and customs of the island.

Furthermore, all hotel service fees for the cruise have been waived, and guests will receive a 50% refund of their cruise fare for the disruption to the voyage.

Cruise travel protection is also in place for all guests and they will receive 400 RMB (one of China’s official currencies; approximately $56 USD) for the cancelled port visit to Fukuoka.

On her current sailing, the 85,619-gross-ton, Spirit-class Adora Mediterranea is hosting 2,430 passengers as well as 736 international crew members. The ship’s maximum capacity is 2,680 travelers if fully booked with all berths filled. Built as Costa Mediterranea when she entered service in 2003, the ship joined Adora Cruises in 2023 after extensive renovations.

The ultimate cause of the fire is still under investigation but is related to the failure in the air conditioning system. Undoubtedly additional precautions are in place to prevent any further incidents.

The ship is currently homeported from Tianjin, China, offering regular itineraries with visits to Jeju and different ports of call in Japan.

Fires on Cruise Ships

Small fires do happen on cruise ships. Electrical shorts, overheating equipment, or mechanical malfunctions are typical causes, but other potential causes can be accidents in the kitchen or even lightning strikes, such as a fire to the whale tail funnel of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Freedom in March 2024.

Interestingly, the Carnival Freedom fire was less than a year after the ship’s funnel was previously damaged in a different fire. That first incident was related to soot buildup and other causes, but was not a result of any safety malfunction.

It should be noted that fires can occur on any cruise ship at any time. In fact, one of the newest cruise ships in the world, Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas, had a small engine room fire in June that resulted in a brief power loss.

Cruise ship crews undergo regular training to deal with all types of emergencies, including fires, and all cruise ships have dedicated fire response teams onboard.

Princess Cruises Boosts Premier Plan Closer to All-Inclusive Level

Princess Cruises announced three major changes to its Princess Premier package, moving the plan further into all-inclusive cruise territory. 

Under the new policy, guests who buy the package will receive unlimited daily beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, unlimited specialty restaurant dining, and unlimited use of MedallionNet Max Wi-Fi.

The enhanced package went on sale August 15, 2024 for cruises sailing from North American ports, and will go on sale on August 16, 2024 for voyages from all other locations. The plan takes effect on cruises departing on and after August 31, 2024, depending on the ship.

With the upgraded amenities, the price of the package rises to $90 per person, per day, up from the previous $80 per person, per day. Adding the inclusive plan to a 7-night sailing will increase the cruise fare by $630.

However, Princess Cruises says the cost still reflects up to 70% savings compared to buying individual service packages for drinks, specialty dining, and WiFi.

“The most comprehensive package in cruise for an unmatched $90 a day ensures our guests can enjoy their vacation experience without any limitations,Padgett added.

The beverage plan is valid on drinks costing up to $20, and includes premium liquors, wines, and cocktails. Some of the featured brands are Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Single Barrel Select, and wines by Duckhorn, Stag’s Leap, and Grgich Hills, for example. 

The changes to the dining opportunities mean guests can indulge in specialty restaurant meals every night of their cruise if they wish. 

The venues include popular eateries such as Crown Grill, the steakhouse that serves beef and seafood; The Catch by Rudi, offering a seafood menu from Chef Rudi Sodamin; the Japanese restaurant Makoto Ocean, with sushi by Makoto Okuwa; Umai Teppanyaki; and The Butcher’s Block by Dario, created by world-famous butcher Dario Cecchini.

Unlimited prix fixe dinners at any of the fleet’s casual dining venues are also covered under the enhanced Premier package.

With the unlimited MedallionNet Max Wi-Fi, Premier package guests can stay connected throughout their vacation at sea, using Starlink and 5G, available fleetwide. The cruise line recently previewed connection speed upgrades to the service that will roll out in 2025.

Princess Cruises’ existing Premier Package included just two nights of specialty dining, MedallionNet 2.0 with Starlink and 5G limited to four devices, an Unlimited Digital Photo Package, and several amenities from the lower-cost Princess Plus package.

Those additional Plus package amenities featured crew tips, two premium desserts per day, free OceanNow delivery and room service, “Green Lane” embarkation, and two fitness classes per sailing.

The Green Lane express boarding service and the OceanNow delivery of food and drinks anywhere on the ship were added to both Princess Plus and Princess Premier packages in August 2023.

The dessert and fitness amenities were added in February 2023, the same time that the line announced a partnership with Xponential Fitness, which provides Pure Barre, Yoga Six and Stretch Lab classes.

Enhanced Package to Roll Out Through Mid-October

The new Princess Premier package will roll out across the fleet from late August to mid-October 2024. The new amenities and services will take effect onboard Enchanted Princess on August 31, Majestic Princess and Sky Princess on September 1, Crown Princess on September 2, Ruby Princess on September 3, and Grand Princess on September 4.

Also, onboard Emerald Princess, Discovery Princess, and Sun Princess on September 7; Caribbean Princess and Regal Princess on September 12; Royal Princess and Sapphire Princess on September 14; Island Princess on September 25; Diamond Princess on September 26, and Coral Princess on October 17.

Guests on future sailings who have already purchased a Premier package can upgrade to the new offer by contacting the cruise line or their travel advisor.

Carnival Brand Ambassador Confronted Over Cruising Ducks

A heated encounter with a frustrated stranger is usually the last thing anyone wants to deal with first thing in the morning (or ever) – and especially not when you’re supposed to be relaxing on your cruise vacation. 

But John Heald, the brand ambassador for Carnival Cruise Lines, received a rude awakening from a fellow passenger on the morning of Wednesday, August 14, 2024, while onboard Carnival Mardi Gras. 

The cruise expert was on his way to grab a morning cup of coffee when he was approached by an angry guest who had enough of the popular cruising ducks game.

For those who aren’t familiar, the act of hiding rubber ducks around cruise ships has become increasingly popular in recent years – typically bringing joy to the guests and crew members who happen upon the toys. 

“It was 7:40 AM and I took a break from answering questions to go and get my coffee. The lady comes rushing towards me walking really really quickly and I can see she’s holding a medium-size duck in her hand. She’s shouting my name over and over again,” Heald said in a post on his popular Facebook page.

Initially, Heald thought that the anonymous woman was approaching him because she was enjoying the game or might be gifting him a rubber duck of his own – but that was not the case.

“She got within spittle distance and spent the next three minutes, telling me that the ‘duck thing had gotten out of control’ and that other cruise lines have done the right thing by banning them,” continued Heald.

The cruise ambassador tried to explain how the game could be fun for other guests, but the irked passenger would have none of it. And making matters worse, Heald couldn’t even enjoy his morning coffee after their encounter. 

“I explained that it was just a little bit of fun and if the other cruise lines want to cancel that fun then that’s entirely up to them. She told me that we were ‘ignorant.’ I have a cold coffee,” Heald added. 

The cruising personality is currently onboard the Excel-class vessel for a 6-day Eastern Caribbean cruise that embarked from Port Canaveral, Florida, on August 11, 2024 – and will still call on Grand Turk Island, Turks and Caicos, before it disembarks at the Orlando-based port on August 17. 

The 6,500-guest ship already visited Nasseau, Bahamas, on August 12, and Puerto Plata / Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, on August 14. 

Cruising Ducks are Here to Stay

If Heald’s post doesn’t make it obvious enough, cruising ducks aren’t going anywhere – at least as far as Carnival Cruise Line is concerned. 

Heald’s followers were also quick to come to the ambassador’s defense and express their disdain for the passenger who confronted him, arguing that cruising ducks are a welcomed addition onboard Carnival’s 27 ships. 

At best, the game adds joy, and at worst, it does no harm – and there is no requirement for uninterested passengers to play.

“If you don’t want to participate in the ducks then don’t pick them up! Walk on by to let someone that is into them get it! Simple!,” one Facebook user commented. 

“I fail to understand how the ducks harm anyone in any way. If you don’t like them, don’t hide them and don’t look for them…just keep doing your thing and move on… People just have to find something to complain about,” added someone else.

But apparently, something as innocent as hiding rubber ducks is controversial – as it’s not the first time this activity has caused debate this summer.

In July, Heald’s Facebook page found itself at the center of a debate on if crew members should be allowed to participate in the game after an unidentified cruiser complained that the employees were “stealing” the hidden ducks. 

The overwhelming consensus was that the crew members should be welcomed to play – especially if the game brings them joy while they are working long hours away from their homes and families.
