Holland America Rolls Out Unforgettable Journeys Deal

With an eye toward making cruise vacations more affordable for travelers, Holland America Line has rolled out a new, limited-time promotion that reduces guest deposits and includes a substantial service fee as part of the base cruise fare.

The offer can be combined with the line’s existing premium package for a comprehensive set of included amenities.

Latest Promotion Covers Crew Tips, Cuts Deposits

Holland America Line launched the “Unforgettable Journeys Event” on June 28, 2023, offering 50% reduced deposits and free crew gratuities on departures from October 2023 through April 2024. Bookings must be made between June 28 and July 31, 2023.

Cruisers can take advantage of the offer on sailings across the globe, including to Antarctica, Asia, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, and South America, among other destinations. The deal also is valid on the special 22-day Solar Eclipse and Circle Hawaii cruise aboard the 2,650-guest Koningsdam, which will be positioned for total eclipse viewing on April 8, 2024. The April 5-27 voyage departs from San Diego and concludes in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Holland America Line, a Carnival Corporation brand that in 2023 is marking its 150th anniversary, noted that its “Unforgettable Journeys Event” is not offered on Grand Voyages or on cruises of three days or less.

Money-saving Offer Designed to Spur Bookings

The line said its offer of reduced deposits is geared to making it more economical for guests to plan a future cruise.

The crew gratuity perk applies to the first and second guests in each stateroom. Officially called the Crew Appreciation fee, the charge is $16 per person, per day in non-suite cabins and $17.50 per person, per day in suites.

On a 7-day cruise departing in December 2023, for instance, the first and second guests in a non-suite cabin would save a total of $224 with this promotion; those in a suite would save $245.

The “Unforgettable Journeys Event” can be combined with Holland America’s “Have it All” premium package, which includes free shore excursions based on the length of cruise; a Signature Beverage Package that covers up to 15 drinks, including wine, beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages, per person, per day; specialty restaurant dining in up to three venues, based on cruise length; and the Wi-Fi Surf Package.

By combining the latest promotion event with the existing “Have it All” package, savings can reach $115 per person, per day, representing a value of $1,610 for a 7-day cruise or $3,450 for a 15-day cruise, based on a double occupancy booking.

“Holland America Line’s ‘Have it All’ premium package already adds exceptional value with some of our most popular amenities, and with the ‘Unforgettable Journeys Event’ that includes prepaid crew appreciation we’re making it even more enticing to start planning that next cruise,” said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line’s chief commercial officer.

“Travelers are looking for offers that provide significant savings or include add-ons to enhance their experience, and our newest promotion does both,” she added.

Cruise Line Partners With National Geographic

The “Unforgettable Journeys Event” was the second major announcement from Holland America Line within the last week. On June 23 the cruise line revealed a collaboration with National Geographic that will bring four new, immersive shore excursions to two of its ships.

The National Geographic Day Tours, offered aboard Europe sailings this summer on the 1,964-guest Oosterdam and the 2,106-guest Nieuw Statendam, will be guided by National Geographic-trained specialists and feature interactions with local residents for in-depth, inimitable experiences.

The tours can be booked on 7- to 14-day itineraries that depart from Trieste, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Barcelona, Spain; and call at Rhodes and Santorini, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Naples, Italy. With such amazing destinations featuring immersive tours, these really will be “unforgettable journeys” for every cruise traveler.

Top Two Largest-Ever Cruise Ships Both Arriving in 2024

Royal Caribbean International is gearing up for one of the most exciting years in its history. In 2024, the cruise line is launching two colossal cruise ships, Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas. Both will be the top two largest cruise ships in the world! It promises to be a defining moment in the cruise industry and will have a huge impact.

With Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean is moving towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. Despite their size, both vessels will run much cleaner than the other 26 ships in the fleet, as they are outfitted with LNG propulsion and fuel cell technology.

Utopia of the Seas: Arriving July 2024

Utopia of the Seas, the sixth and final ship of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class fleet, is marketed as “The World’s Biggest Weekend,” and will be the first Oasis-class cruise ship designed entirely around shorter 3-4 night itineraries that make the most of your weekend.

The largest Oasis-class cruise ship to date, Utopia of the Seas, is currently under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. Construction started with cutting the first steel in April 2022 and reached another major milestone when the keel was laid down in July 2022.

Once completed, she will measure 236,860 gross tons and can accommodate 5,668 guests at double occupancy.

The inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, with the 28th ship in the fleet embarking on a 4-night cruise to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Sailing from Port Canaveral, Utopia of the Seas is packed with amenities, boasting 18 public decks, 21 dining venues, five pools, 23 bars, two casinos, and much more spread out over eight different neighborhoods.

Some highlights include the Ultimate Abyss slide, a zip line, and the FlowRider surf simulator. There will also be a new specialty restaurant, a poolside food truck, and the new Pesky Parrot bar.

Utopia of the Seas also introduces two new Solarium Suites, providing an adult-only area with its own pool and whirlpools, and offers 20 new room types compared to other Royal Caribbean cruise ships, including the Royal Loft Suite.

Icon of the Seas: Arriving January 2024

The other remarkable addition, and the 27th cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, will be Icon of the Seas

Billed as “The World’s Best Family Vacation,” the cruise ship will sail from Miami, Florida, on January 27, 2024. Icon of the Seas will offer 7-night Caribbean cruises, including stops at Basseterre, St. Kitts or Phillipsburg, St. Maarten; St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands; and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, Icon of the Seas is the first of the new Icon class ships. At 250,800 gross tons, she will be the largest cruise ship in the world upon launch.

The vessel can house 5,610 guests at double occupancy but with the capacity to hold up to 7,600 guests. The first steel for the vessel was cut on June 14, 2021, and she already returned from her first sea trials earlier this month, on June 22.

Icon of the Seas‘ 20 decks house 2,805 staterooms, seven pools, nine whirlpools, and six record-breaking water slides. An incredible 2,350 international crew will be onboard to ensure all guests are well cared for while enjoying themselves in eight neighborhoods, each boasting unique features and attractions.

Among the 28 different cabin categories, there are new options like the Family Infinite Oceanview Balconies, Surfside Family View Cabins, and the Ultimate Family Townhouse suite.

Utopia or Icon?

Royal Caribbean is breaking the mold again with Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas. While the Oasis-class ships have been around for some years, Royal Caribbean has infused freshness and anticipation into the class with Utopia of the Seas.

With Icon of the Seas, the cruise line has gone all-out to create something that many didn’t believe possible onboard a cruise ship. She promises to be the epitome of a family vacation at sea, which is precisely what Royal Caribbean set out to do.

The launch of these two vessels will undoubtedly create waves in the cruise industry, pushing boundaries in design and guest experiences. However, Royal is taking a very serious step toward becoming a more sustainable focussed company with these two ships. Something that was badly needed for the Miami-based company.

Whether you’re looking for a swift yet luxurious weekend getaway with Utopia‘s 3 to 4-night itineraries or a week-long, family-focused adventure with Icon‘s 7-night itineraries, the choice between the two vessels comes down to personal choice.

Yet, regardless of your preference, both ships promise an unforgettable cruise filled with innovative entertainment, culinary delights, and relaxation. These cutting-edge vessels offer a new era of cruising, and we can’t wait to see them set sail in 2024.

Carnival Cruise Line Developing Even More Menu Changes

Just as Carnival Cruise Line is introducing new menus that will soon roll out to the entire fleet, the cruise line has also announced the development of a new vegan menu for the main dining room. This will provide more plant-based options for cruise travelers for breakfast, brunch, and dinner.

More Vegan Options Coming to Carnival

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has announced that new vegan menus will be coming to the popular cruise line’s main dining rooms, with plant-based options for every meal. These distinct menus are likely to offer a variety of more expansive dining options, in addition to the vegetarian options already available.

“Something special is coming,” Heald said on his popular Facebook page. “We are designing distinct vegan menus for breakfast, brunch and dinner.”

The menu details are still being finalized, but Heald does say they will be coming soon. There is no indication as to whether the menus will be introduced slowly to individual ships, or if they will be rolled out fleetwide more quickly. No date for the new menus to appear has been announced.

This revelation comes as Heald has attempted to work with unhappy travelers who have claimed “Carnival is being discriminatory” by not including more plant-based options on its menus. It must be noted, however, that the cruise line has offered vegetarian options for many years, as well as extensive salad bars, fruits, and vegetables for guests to enjoy.

Vegetarian or Vegan?

Vegetarian and vegan dietary options, while similar, are not precisely the same.

Vegetarians do not eat “animal flesh” which may include poultry, fish, beef, or any other meat, but vegetarian diets often include some animal-based products such as dairy, eggs, or honey. Vegan diets are typically more strict and avoid any animal-based products being completely plant-based.

Different individuals often adapt their specific dietary choices based on their nutritional needs, health concerns, or personal beliefs. Some vegetarians, for example, avoid dairy but will eat eggs, while others may only eat one type of meat, such as fish or chicken.

Many vegetarian menu items may still include animal-derived products – such as honey used as a sweetener, cheese as a topping, or using butter for cooking – and therefore would not qualify as vegan.

Carnival Cruise Line already offers a variety of vegetarian dishes on its menus, such as roasted vegetable lasagna, baked vegetable au gratin, tropical fruit plates, and vegetarian Indian curries.

According to a 2018 Gallup Poll, approximately 5% of Americans consider themselves vegetarian, while just 3% consider themselves vegan. Many additional individuals, however, are likely to enjoy the occasional vegetarian or vegan dish, depending on their taste preferences.

New Dining Room Menus

This announcement of new vegan main dining room menus comes just after Carnival Cruise Line has begun introducing revitalized menus aboard Carnival Dream, with the intent to roll out the new menus fleetwide later this year.

The new menus do include vegetarian options, but lack any options specifically designated as vegan.

Carnival Cruise Line Menu Change
Carnival Cruise Line Menu Change

Especially disappointing to both vegetarians and vegans are the new “Featured Salads” that are entrée-sized, but each one includes not only cheese, sour cream, eggs, or other non-vegan ingredients, but also proteins such as smoked salmon, bacon, shrimp, or chicken. This makes the salads unsuitable for even the most relaxed vegetarians.

It is unclear how customizable the entrée salads may be and whether or not guests can request that the animal proteins be left off any salads they may order.

Heald has indicated that the new menus are continuing to be refined as the cruise line receives guest feedback, and there may yet be modifications to the new dishes before the menus are introduced fleetwide.

Celebrity Ships Will Begin Visiting Royal Caribbean’s Private Island

Celebrity Cruises has made several changes to its summer 2024 program, most notably featuring the maiden visits for Celebrity Cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The revamped program also includes an increased number of year-round Caribbean sailings to the Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean, and exciting weekend trips onboard Celebrity Reflection

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean International’s award-winning private island destination and is typically reserved for cruise ships from Royal.

Celebrity Cruises Makes Changes to 2024 Summer Cruises

Celebrity Cruises has announced revamped summer 2024 itineraries onboard Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Reflection, which now include Perfect Day at CocoCay on several sailings.

This means that any drinks packages purchased onboard are valid on the island, while venues such as Snack Shacks, the Chill Grill, and Skipper’s Grill offer complimentary food.

Any experiences that guests would like to partake in, such as entry to the Thrill Waterpark, the zipline, the Up, Up and Away balloon, the Coco Beach Club, and private cabanas, can be booked in the Celebrity Cruise Planner or the onboard app.

Year-Round Caribbean Cruises

As part of the revamped itineraries, the 141,420 gross tons Celebrity Beyond will now offer year-round sailings from Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale.

Guests can choose between six and eight-night cruises exploring destinations like Grand Cayman, The Bahamas, Mexico, and the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao.

Meanwhile, the largest Solstice-class cruise ship at 125,366 gross tons, Celebrity Reflection, will sail three and four-night itineraries, which will be the perfect weekend getaways. Almost 40 itineraries feature visits to Perfect Day, Key West, and Bimini’s white-sand beaches, and run from Friday to Monday.

There will be three-night and four-night cruises sailing to Perfect Day and Nassau, four-night sailings to Key West and Perfect Day, and three-night sailings to Bimini and Perfect Day. On November 1, 2024, one three-night cruise will visit Perfect Day only.

Royal Caribbean Removes Venues for Casino Expansions

Royal Caribbean International has removed the jazz clubs aboard three Oasis-class ships and converted the spaces to smoke-less casinos, using the interior outfitter Trimline to manage the conversions as the ships were in service. The changes are now complete aboard Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and Allure of the Seas.

Jazz Clubs Removed

The three oldest Oasis-class ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet no longer feature jazz clubs on Deck 4, but instead, now use the space for smoke-less casinos.

The “Jazz on 4” clubs, located forward in each ship near the main show lounge, were popular for live music and other activities, but the desire for smoke-free casino areas in recent years has risen and prompted the change.

The work to remove each jazz club and convert it to a casino space was done by “ride on squads” to complete the transformations without the need for dry dock accommodations or otherwise removing the ships from service. On each ship, the individual conversions took approximately two weeks.

Aboard Harmony of the Seas, for example, the work was completed from the end of February through mid-March.

Trimline provided an expert team of demolition and removal contractors, joiners, electricians, and decorators to complete the work, coordinating closely with data, casino, and IT specialists to ensure the work was efficient and did not disrupt ship operations for either guests or crew members. Meticulous pre-planning also helped the work proceed effectively without impacting the onboard experience.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Royal Caribbean on these conversions. The team has worked tirelessly to ensure that the work is delivered to the highest standards, and we are delighted with the results,” said Billy Morton, Trimline Project Manager. “We’re confident that these new smoke-less casinos will provide an enjoyable experience for the guests on board.”

Trimline has also been responsible for other cruise ship renovations, including modernizing suites, converting dining rooms, rebranding spaces, refitting public areas, and more for cruise lines such as TUI Cruises, Seabourn, and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. With more than 57 years’ experience, Trimline creates marine interiors not just for cruise ships, but also for ferries and military vessels.

What About Other Ships?

The three remaining Oasis-class vessels – Symphony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and the upcoming Utopia of the Seas – still show the same space on Deck 4, but for different uses.

Aboard Symphony of the Seas, the space is still labeled as “Jazz on 4” but it is possible the conversion is yet to be planned.

Wonder of the Seas, currently the world’s largest cruise ship and the youngest Oasis-class vessel, has the “Golden Room” in the same location, which is already a smoke-free casino. It is possible the success of the space, based not only on general use but also on guest feedback, may be what prompted the conversion aboard the other ships.

Official deck plans for the upcoming Utopia of the Seas, which will be the last of the Oasis-class vessels, also shows the space labeled as “Casino Royale Non-Smoking” but without any more specific name as yet. Utopia of the Seas will set sail from Port Canaveral in July 2024.

Non-Smoking Trends

According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking rates in the United States have dropped by nearly 50% in the past 18 years, from 20.9% of adults in 2005 to just 11.5% of adults in 2021. Younger adults (under age 25) are even less likely to smoke, meaning this trend is likely to continue in years to come.

By reducing smoking spaces onboard cruise ships and providing more smoke-free areas, cruise lines are updating their policies and spaces to the preferences of younger cruisers.

This can be especially relevant for Royal Caribbean, which is rapidly positioning itself as a more family-oriented cruise line with amazing ship amenities and designs that appeal to younger families, such as the new Surfside neighborhood on the upcoming Icon of the Seas.

It remains to be seen whether or not there are further changes to other ships, as well as aboard other cruise lines, to remove smoking spaces or to provide more smoke-free alternatives for passengers to enjoy.

Bahamas Delays Cruise Passenger Tax Increase

The Bahamas government has announced a delay in implementing a controversial increase in cruise passenger taxes. The new tax rates, originally slated to take effect in July 2023, will now commence in January 2024.

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy has been a vocal opponent of the increased tax rates for cruise passengers, saying people are tired of being forced to pay increased taxes while on holiday.

Government and Industry Reacts to Tax Delay

Through Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, the Bahamas government has announced that implementing a tax rate increase for cruise ship passengers has been delayed until January 1, 2024.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, the decision comes after careful consideration of concerns from the cruise industry.

Cruise passengers departing from Freeport, Nassau, and Bimini were to see a rise in their taxes from $18 to $23, while passengers only visiting a cruise line’s private island, such as Perfect Day at CocoCay or Half Moon Cay, would face a higher tax of $25.

Cooper stated to Eyewitness News: “Nobody wants their taxes to increase. They’ve made certain representations. We’ve taken those into consideration. The Prime Minister and I have spoken, and we will speak at the Cabinet level. Suffice it to say we have already given a seven months delay in the implementation of the tax. The tax does not come into force until January 2024.”

The revised plan also includes a $5 tourism environmental tax and a $2 tourism enhancement tax on each cruise passenger. Cruise lines and their guests have had mixed reactions to the proposed tax increase.

Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line President, previously expressed her hope for a delay, stating:“There’s a lot of development happening in The Bahamas, and we’re working with the officials in The Bahamas to see if, at least, it can get pushed out.”

“Look, if I’m on a budget, this is my budget. This is what I can spend. But I mean, look at resort taxes and resort fees. I don’t want to say people have gotten used to it, but it has been piling on,” Duffy continued.

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard voiced worries about potential repercussions on local tourism, cautioning that new passenger taxes could motivate cruise ships to seek cheaper destinations.

Tax Increase Could Land Bahamas $95 Million in One Year

Despite the delay, the government has no plans to cancel the tax increase and still aims to significantly boost its revenue from departing cruise passengers. It projects $145 million in revenue in the 2023 to 2024 budget, a sharp increase from $50 million in the current fiscal year.

Since the global pause in operations, the cruise industry has been instrumental in rebuilding the Bahamian tourism industry. Cruise ship arrivals rose to 5,390,016 in 2022 from 1,115,181 in 2021 and have been instrumental in driving economic recovery.

The Bahamas has every right to profit from the sharp increase in arrivals, which is expected to significantly increase with the port infrastructure improvements in Nassau and upcoming projects such as Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club and Disney’s Lighthouse Point.

However, it’s crucial to balance the benefits against the potential backlash from the cruise industry regarding the proposed tax increases.

The delayed implementation to 2024 offers cruise companies time to adjust and implement the charges, which will be added to guests’ cruise fares.

However, ongoing negotiations will be critical to maintaining The Bahamas as a premier cruise destination while ensuring a fair contribution to the local economy.

Successful Rescue of Passenger Overboard Royal Caribbean Ship

A guest who accidentally fell overboard from a Royal Caribbean ship has been safely rescued thanks to quick action from crew members. The incident happened on Sunday, June 25, 2023, from Mariner of the Seas while the ship was sailing a day at sea en route to the first port of call on its current sailing.

Passenger Overboard From Mariner of the Seas

Guests onboard Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas have reported a brief overboard situation that was quickly resolved with a successful rescue on Sunday, June 25.

A female passenger was reportedly sitting on the ship’s railing to take a photo, when she slipped and fell into the water, but the circumstances of the incident have not been confirmed.

Crew members were quickly alerted and the ship was turned around to recover the passenger. A smoke flare was used to mark their position in the water, and the ship’s pilot boat was dispatched to bring her back aboard.

During the rescue operation, the ship’s cruise director kept guests onboard updated through public address announcements. Deck 4 portside was closed to permit crew members to more efficiently conduct the rescue.

No further details have been released about the guest’s identity, condition, or the complete circumstances that led to the fall. It is also unknown at this time what deck the guest fell from, or whether it was from a public deck or a stateroom balcony.

As with any overboard incident, there will be a thorough investigation to be sure all safety procedures and response protocols were in place and worked effectively.

No Impact on Current Sailing

The incident happened in the afternoon hours as the ship was southeast of the Dominican Republic. Mariner of the Seas is currently sailing an 8-night “Southern Caribbean & Perfect Day” itinerary that departed Port Canaveral on Friday, June 23.

The first two days of the cruise, including Sunday, have been days at sea, and the ship will call on Curacao, Aruba, and CocoCay before returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday, July 1.

The ship resumed course shortly thereafter, and the incident did not impact the overall itinerary.

This is not the first successful rescue of a passenger overboard from Mariner of the Seas. In 2016, while the ship was sailing from Shanghai, a 31-year-old woman accidentally fell over the railing and was rescued after spending an astonishing 38 hours in the ocean.

The 140,000-gross ton, Voyager-class Mariner of the Seas is currently homeported from Port Canaveral, offering a variety of Southern, Eastern, and Western Caribbean sailings, as well as the occasional Bermuda itinerary, with cruises ranging from 4-8 nights depending on departure date.

In May 2024, the ship will reposition to Galveston to begin offering 4- and 5-night Western Caribbean cruises from the popular Texas homeport.

PortMiami Reopens Nearly 12 Hours After Boat Collision

PortMiami reopened at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2023, almost 12 hours after the early-morning boat collision that caused a fatality, sunken wreckage, and channel closure, thus prohibiting three large cruise ships from reentering the port at the end of their sailings.

Emergency personnel were able to successfully clear the channel and ensure the safety of the returning vessels, however, and the debarkation and subsequent embarkation of nearly 30,000 cruise passengers has begun.

PortMiami Now Reopen

Once the sunken boat wreckage was safely lifted from the Government Cut at PortMiami, the cruise port was able to successfully reopen and welcome back the three cruise ships scheduled to debark and embark passengers today: Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration.

All three cruise ships had been anchored just outside the channel since the port was closed in the early morning hours, awaiting updates from port authorities and the US Coast Guard for clearance to enter the port.

The port was closed at approximately 3:40 a.m., when a 30-foot boat collided with the Fisher Island Ferry just east of Dodge Island, the location of the cruise ship terminals.

One person was killed in the accident, another was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. No other circumstances of the incident have been released and the investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the collision, who may have been at fault, and what the consequences may be.

A barge with crane equipment was brought in to salvage the sunken vessel, while divers conducted inspections to ensure the channel’s safety.

As the port has reopened, the 165,000-gross ton Norwegian Escape was the first vessel to enter the channel and dock, followed by the 169,400-gross ton MSC Seascape, and finally, the 183,500-gross ton Carnival Celebration.

By 3:45 p.m., all three vessels had entered the channel, and Norwegian Escape had already completed docking. Together, the three ships are carrying in excess of 15,000 travelers, as well as thousands of crew members.

As each ship docks, it will need not only to debark passengers as well as any crew members who may be at the end of their ship contracts, but also take on supplies for the next sailing.

Keeping Guests Informed

All three cruise lines have worked diligently to keep guests onboard the ships and those embarking for today’s departures informed throughout the day with text messages, emails, and letters handed out at the cruise terminals.

While the situation has been well beyond the cruise lines’ control, each one has sought to help keep guests comfortable as the day progressed.

Guests onboard had various announcements whenever new information was available, and crew members worked to provide food, beverages, and entertainment options.

For travelers whose cruises will now be starting hours later than anticipated, the cruise lines have provided onboard credit ($20 per person for MSC Seascape and Carnival Celebration, and $25 for Norwegian Escape) to compensate for today’s lunch costs, as well as recommendations for where to go nearby for shopping, dining, or entertainment.

Carnival Cruise Line has also provided complimentary shuttles for its guests to visit Bayside Marketplace, a nearby shopping center with a variety of food options. A Carnival staff member has also been onsite at Bayside Marketplace to keep guests informed throughout the day.

“This is not the way we expected to start your cruise, and we appreciate your patience and understanding,” one update from Carnival read. Each ship is anticipating debarkation to last 2-3 hours, with embarkation for the next sailings to begin shortly thereafter.

In the late afternoon, Norwegian Cruise Line informed incoming guests that they expected to begin check-in at 7 p.m., with embarkation starting at approximately 9 p.m. “Please do not arrive to the port prior to 6 p.m.,” the NCL notification said, in an effort to minimize traffic and crowding.

Similarly, MSC Cruises advised incoming guests that embarkation would not likely begin until 5 p.m. “We currently expect to start embarkation no earlier than 5:00 p.m.,” the MSC letter read. “We will promptly inform you as soon as we have a clear idea of when we will be ready to welcome you on board.”

Will the Next Itineraries Be Impacted?

There is no word yet on whether or not the next sailings of each vessel may be altered to account for the late start. Each ship is scheduled to begin a 7-night sailing today, with all three vessels departing on Eastern Caribbean voyages.

While each ship has a different itinerary and different ports of call, all three are scheduled to spend Monday, June 26 at sea.

This can make it easy for each ship to make up for lost time by adjusting the sailing speed to compensate, which should mean the overall itinerary is not dramatically impacted.

Each cruise line will, of course, make any schedule change decisions based on overall sailing routes, planned times in port, and cruising speeds, and those changes will be communicated to passengers when any adjusted plans are confirmed.

Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with the families of the individuals involved in this morning’s accident, and good wishes go out to all impacted passengers for smooth sailings on their slightly delayed cruises.

Accident Closes Major Cruise Homeport, Multiple Ships Delayed

An early morning accident at PortMiami has closed the popular homeport to all cruise and cargo traffic, creating a major impact to multiple cruise ships that are now waiting outside the channel for clearance to enter the port for docking. As yet, there is no timeline for when the port will reopen and passengers will be permitted to debark, or how delayed the next cruises may be.

Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration are all impacted by the incident and are currently on hold for debarkation and embarkation for their next sailings.

Boat Collision Closes PortMiami Channel

According to local news reports, a 30-foot boat collided with the Fisher Island Ferry in the Government Cut channel at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

One person was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, and another person was found deceased in the water at the accident scene.

This is the exit route from PortMiami that all cruise ships use. The crash happened just east of Dodge Island, where the cruise terminals are located.

The US Coast Guard, which is responsible for the safety and security of Government Cut, has established a temporary security zone in the area that limits all incoming and outgoing marine traffic while the incident is investigated, and to be sure debris is safely cleared and will not endanger any other vessels.

Cruise Ships Delayed

Three large cruise ships are impacted by this ongoing situation: Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration.

Together, the three ships, which are among the largest in their respective fleets, are carrying as many as 15,000 passengers. When counting incoming guests boarding the ships today, there are more than 30,000 travelers impacted by these delays.

As of 10 a.m., the port remains closed, and cruise travelers are being advised to wait before heading to the terminals.

“We will continue to monitor the situation,” John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador, said. “Please do not proceed to the cruise terminal until you receive our final update. We apologize for the delay. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.”

Text messages and emails will continue to be sent to incoming guests to keep them updated about the timing of today’s embarkation.

Onboard the Waiting Ships

Guests onboard the three delayed ships are being updated as much as possible, and each ship’s crew is working to provide additional activities and entertainment as available. Guests will be asked to vacate their staterooms in order for the housekeeping staff to turn over the rooms for the next cruise, but public areas will be available for waiting.

No food or beverage services are interrupted on the waiting cruise ships, and there are no safety concerns as the vessels wait for clearance to proceed into the port.

Norwegian Escape is completing a 7-night Caribbean sailing that included visits to the Dominican Republic, the Virgin Islands, and Great Stirrup Cay. The cruise departing today is an identical itinerary.

MSC Seascape is finishing a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise that visited the cruise line’s private island destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, as well as Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. Today’s departing cruise is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing that is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nassau, and Ocean Cay.

Carnival Celebration is ending an 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage that visited Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, and the ship’s next sailing is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and St. Maarten.

At this time, there is no update as to whether or not any of the waiting ships will need to adjust their itineraries to compensate for this delay. Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for further updates on this developing story.
