New Carnival Destination Feature to Be Named By Bahamians

Carnival Cruise Line is giving one lucky Grand Bahamian the opportunity to name a key feature of Celebration Key, the upcoming exclusive destination on Grand Bahama Island.

The local community competition will be for the honor of naming Artisan Village, a dedicated space in Celebration Key where local artists will be showcased and visitors will be immersed in authentic Bahamian culture.

Local Contest to Name Artisan Village

Carnival Cruise Line, along with the Ministry for Grand Bahama and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, is hosting a naming contest for Artisan Village on Celebration Key. The project will help the local community be even further invested in the destination, cementing the partnership between the cruise line and Grand Bahama.

“Carnival has sought to prioritize authentic Bahamian culture throughout every aspect of this project, from the food to the architecture, and nowhere more than in the Artisan Village,” said Philcher Grant-Adderley, Carnival Corporation & plc’s Public Affairs and Community Engagement Director. “It is only fitting that the name should be chosen by a Bahamian.”

The contest is open to all Grand Bahamians, including individuals, families, groups, local organizations, and classrooms. Entrants can be under the age of 18, but youth entries must include a release form from a parent or legal guardian.

The entry period will close on Monday, March 25. At that time, a selection committee will review entries to determine finalists, and a winner will be announced in early April. Local officials and representatives of cultural and creative industries will all be on the selection committee, though Carnival will have the final say for the winning entry.

“We can hardly wait to see the creative, inspired submissions that we know will be submitted,” said Grant-Adderley. “I encourage all Grand Bahamians to take part, get your submissions in early and submit as many ideas as you have!”

How to Enter

Entries for Celebration Key’s Artisan Village Naming Competition must be submitted online. Each entry should include a 200-300-word explanation of the name, including how it relates to Bahamian culture and Celebration Key, as well as the entrant’s complete name.

One entrant may submit multiple entries, but each must be submitted separately. Name proposals that include corporation or business names, political figures, brands, or other proper names will be disqualified.

As is standard for corporate contests, employees of Carnival or any of its related companies, the Ministry for Grand Bahama, and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture are not eligible to enter the contest. All entrants must also be following Celebration Key’s Facebook and Instagram accounts to be eligible to win.

A Prize Package to Celebrate

Not only will the winning entrant have the honor of their name being used for the Artisan Village on Celebration Key, but they will receive a generous prize package as well.

The prize includes $5,000 cash (Bahamian dollars and US dollars have the same value), as well as the opportunity to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Celebration Key, with transportation, food, and beverages for the event included. The winner will also receive a day pass to the private destination, including drink vouchers, food, and a private cabana to enjoy.

A Bahamian-Centered Project

From its inception, Carnival has been committed to ensuring a beneficial partnership with Grand Bahama that will truly bring benefits to the local community once the new private destination opens in 2025.

“Bahamian architects have collaborated on the design of the destination in an effort to ensure its character is as authentically Bahamian as possible, most especially the Artisan Village,” explained Grant-Adderley. “It seems natural that its name be chosen by a Grand Bahamian.”

The $600 million project – which includes a recently announced pier extension to welcome even more ships beginning in 2026 – is the largest of its kind ever undertaken by Carnival Corporation & plc.

Design elements throughout the destination will highlight the vibrancy and diversity of Bahamian culture, and visiting guests will have opportunities to enjoy not only local artwork, but also music, food, beverages, and retail shopping.

Celebration Key will bring more than 700 permanent jobs to Grand Bahama and will welcome more than 2.2 million guests each year once it opens. By 2028, it is projected that up to 4 million guests annually will visit the exclusive destination, with ships from multiple US homeports, including Celebration Key on a wide range of itineraries.

Sun Princess Sets Sail, Marking New Milestone for Princess Cruises

After much-anticipation and a few unexpected delays, Sun Princess, Princess Cruises’ most ambitious ship to date, has finally embarked on its maiden voyage.

Grand Debut Amidst the Waves

In an atmosphere filled with anticipation and excitement, Sun Princess has officially begun its maiden journey, setting sail from Rome (Civitavecchia) on a Grand Mediterranean adventure on February 28, 2024.

This momentous occasion marks the launch of Princess Cruises’ first Sphere Class vessel, setting a new standard in design, luxury, and guest experience for the cruise line famous for her “Love Boat” ships.

John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises, marked the occasion, saying, “This is an historic day as our new Sun Princess sets sail on her inaugural voyage, and our guests get to experience our sensational, next-level Love Boat firsthand.”

Sun Princess is the first vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fuel used by only six percent of today’s 300 cruise ships.

Navigating Through Challenges

The journey to the launch of Sun Princess was not without its hurdles, including the cancellation of its scheduled inaugural cruise on February 8, 2024. This early disruption provided guests with two weeks’ notice and the inaugural sailing was rescheduled for February 18, 2024.

Four days before that scheduled departure, Sun Princess canceled again, due to the need for additional undisclosed technical work at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

Following the completion of the necessary adjustments, Sun Princess has finally embarked on a 10-day roundtrip from Rome with calls in some of the Mediterranean’s most enchanting ports, including Naples and Sicily, Italy; Crete and Athens, Greece; Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey; and Barcelona and Mallorca, Spain.

Unveiling Maritime Majesty

Sun Princess, with a gross tonnage of 177,882 and the capacity to hosts 4,300 guests, is a vessel brimming with standout features, including the awe-inspiring glass-enclosed The Dome. Inspired by the terraces of Santorini, Greece, this area offers passengers breathtaking views and transforms at night with acrobatic Cirque Éloize performances.

At the heart of the ship lies the Sphere Atrium, transforming the central Piazza into a new dimension with its expansive ocean vistas and open-concept design. The area promotes relaxed indoor and outdoor living while offering a retractable stage and immersive Champagne Waterfall in the evenings.

“The ship is a magnificent showcase of advanced design, technology, and craftsmanship, with elevated spaces and experiences all focused on taking the Princess vacation experience to a new level,” said Padgett.

As for accommodations, the ship offers more than 1,500 cabins featuring balcony views, reimagined staterooms and suites, and the debut of the Cabana Mini-Suites that offer secluded outdoor relaxation.

Culinary enthusiasts will be delighted by the 30 restaurant and bar venues, including collaborations with celebrity chefs and unique dining concepts.

Noteworthy among these are Spellbound by The Magic Castle, Kai Sushi by Chef Makoto Okuwa, Love by Britto (Romero Britto), Butcher’s Block by Dario Cecchini, and The Catch by Chef Rudi Sodamin, complemented by innovative cocktails from celebrity mixologist Rob Floyd at Good Spirits at Sea.

Further elevating the passenger experience, Sun Princess boasts the cruise line’s largest casino, a two-story Lotus Spa, original productions and performances in the round at the Princess Arena, and an expanded retail environment with more than 200 premium brands.

For family fun, Park19, the first-ever family activity zone on a Princess Cruise ship, spans decks 19, 20, and 21. It offers everything from the first-of-its-kind Sea Breeze Rollglider to the Coastal Climb.

Monika Best, from Nova Scotia, Canada, the most-traveled passenger on the Sun Princess with 141 Princess Cruises voyages to her name, said, “Princess is evolving and focusing more on families and generational cruises, which I think is absolutely wonderful because more families are cruising together.”

Future Voyages Aboard Sun Princess

Sun Princess will continue to offer 7 to 21-night Mediterranean cruises through September 14, 2024. As the Mediterranean season concludes, Sun Princess will embark on a journey from Barcelona to Southampton on September 14, 2024.

She will sail on an Iberian coast itinerary before crossing the Atlantic to arrive at her homeport destination, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at Port Everglades, beginning October 9, 2024. Positioned in Fort Lauderdale, Sun Princess will then dedicate the winter season to cruising the eastern and western Caribbean.

As Sun Princess enjoys her first season in the sun, Princess Cruises’ second Sphere Class ship, Star Princess, is underway at Fincantieri shipyard. The sister ship, weighing the same tonnage and accommodating the number of passengers, is slated to debut in 2025.

Disney Cruise Line Unveils New Special Sculpture for New Ship

Just like the Disney theme parks, Disney Cruise Line knows how little details go a long way in creating the perfect ambiance. But a new sculpture designed for the Haunted Mansion Parlor onboard the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure has a deeper meaning that makes it more than just another accent piece.

Disney Cruise Line Honors The Life Of Disney Legend With New Sculpture

When Disney Treasure sets sail on her maiden voyage at the end of 2024, she will do so with an extra special sculpture on board.

The sculpture, which will live in the Haunted Mansion Parlor, might look like another decoration to create a spooky atmosphere for the untrained eye. But in reality, it’s a memorial honoring the legacy of Disney Legend, Roland “Rolly” Crump.

Crump, who died on March 12, 2023 at the age of 93, had an extensive career with the Walt Disney Company as an animator and an imagineer. He is particularly famous for his work on the Haunted Mansion ride, as well as It’s a Small World, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, and the Adventureland Bazaar found in the theme parks.

In honor of his contributions to the company, and his time working side-by-side with Walt Disney himself, Disney Cruise Line will be displaying a bust of Crump in the spookiest bar on Disney Treasure.

“The Haunted Mansion Parlor will unlock the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga for Disney Cruise Line guests. The venue will be imbued with Crump’s unique brand of humor and is a proud continuation of his legacy, celebrating the weird and the fantastical,” read an update from Disney.

Rolly Crump Sculpture
Rolly Crump Sculpture

In an early imagining of the Haunted Mansion ride, well before it opened in Disneyland in 1969, Crump had imagined a walk-through attraction called the “Museum of the Weird” where guests would go for a haunted stroll through a scary wax museum. Part of the imagineer’s vision for the ride was a character who appeared to be melting like a candle.

While Crump’s initial vision never came to pass, it laid the groundwork for the ride Disney fans know and love today, which takes guests on a spirited mansion tour to visit the 999 ghosts who “live” there. But his original idea is being honored on Disney’s newest ship, as the sculpture of the Disney icon will appear to be melting.

Rolly Crump

“It was only fitting for the design for Rolly’s memorial bust to stem from his own ideas, which led to the sculpted drips on the side of his face and a memorial plaque that reads, “BROTHER ROLAND- FOREVER REVERED FOR EMBRACING THE WEIRD,” said the Disney update.

The sculpture is currently being brought to life at a dedicated Walt Disney Imagineering workshop within the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, while the 4,000-passenger cruise ship continues to undergo construction at the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.

All About Disney Treasure’s Haunted Mansion Parlor

Disney’s newest cruise ship will feature a new, ‘haunted’ lounge inspired by the Haunted Mansion attraction located at Disneyland in California, Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida, and Tokyo Disneyland.

Like the beloved ride, the Haunted Mansion Parlor will offer a ghostly twist to the typical bar experience. For starters, it will look like a first-class drawing room on a classic cruise liner from the Golden Age, with nostalgic tributes to the ride through the use of the iconic wallpaper and a familiar purple arm chair tucked in a corner.

Disney Treasure Haunted Mansion Parlor

The lounge will also include touches like a Haunted Mansion Parlor music box, which is said to only open if malevolent spirits are around, and a Haunted Mansion Parlor clock, meant to resemble the old grandfather clock from the Disney Parks’ attraction – both of which are for sale for guests looking to take home some extra special Disney Cruise Line merchandise.

Perhaps most excitingly, guests will see a mirror behind the bar where they may catch a glimpse of the not-so-scary ghosts who call the 144,000 gross-ton ship home. Just like the hitchhiking ghosts on the famous ride, a ghost might follow cruisers home if they aren’t careful!

And of course, it wouldn’t be the perfect spirited night out without some spirits to sip on. Bartenders will be serving a menu of themed drinks, some of which even come with flavored smoke and secret messages from the Great Beyond.

The Haunted Mansion Parlor, along with many other onboard attractions, will be up and running when Disney Treasure sets sail on her maiden voyage on December 21, 2024.

The ship’s initial voyage will embark from Florida’s Port Canaveral on a 7-night sailing, with stops in Tortola (British Virgin Islands), St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands), and the cruise line’s private island of Castaway Cay in the Bahamas before returning to Florida on December 28, 2024.

Carnival Cruise Ship Assists a Distressed Boat in the Florida Straits

Carnival Celebration was able to celebrate swift, humane action that undoubtedly saved lives on Saturday, February 24 when the ship rescued an overcrowded refugee boat in the Florida Straits. The cruise ship provided supplies to the small craft and notified authorities, which were dispatched to take in the stranded group.

Carnival Celebration Facilitates Refugee Rescue

During the last day at sea on her most recent sailing, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise that departed Miami, Florida on Sunday, February 18, Carnival Celebration spotted a small craft north of Cuba in the Florida Straits, overloaded with occupants and signaling for help.

The cruise ship immediately responded, pausing to assess the situation and offering assistance. Authorities were quickly notified and sent appropriate rescue craft to lend aid to the 20 people in the small boat.

“Carnival Celebration’s team helped a group of 20 people in distress on a boat in the Florida Straits on Saturday,” a statement from Carnival Cruise Line read. “The ship’s team gave them food and water and called the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West, which deployed a cutter and rescued the stranded group.”

The exact position of the incident has not been released, but refugee encounters are not uncommon in the Florida straits as migrants from Cuba seek refuge in the United States. U.S. Coast Guard boats routinely patrol the waters and are able to respond to distress calls, illegal crossings, suspected drug trafficking, and more.

In the case of refugees, they are typically given medical care, food, and water, as well as kept safe until they can be turned over to the proper authorities. Except for extreme circumstances, they are returned to their country of origin.

At the time of the rescue operation, Carnival Celebration was on her final full day of the 7-night cruise, a day at sea that followed calls to Cozumel, Roatan, and Costa Maya. The 183,521-gross-ton, Excel-class ship is homeported from Miami year-round, offering Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean itineraries, depending on the sailing date.

There was no delay to the ship’s return to Miami, nor was her next itinerary impacted by her compassionate action.

Another Carnival Celebration Rescue

This is not Carnival Celebration‘s first refugee rescue. The ship encountered her first group of refugees aboard a small raft on January 2, 2023, less than two months after she welcomed her first guests aboard. That incident occurred in the same general area as this most recent rescue.

In March 2023, Carnival Celebration offered assistance to another small boat overcrowded with at least a dozen refugees. During that incident, the individuals in the small craft accepted supplies but declined to be taken aboard the cruise ship. That encounter was also during a Western Caribbean cruise, but happened northeast of Cozumel.

While all vessels are obligated to render aid whenever possible, it is not mandatory that individuals accept that aid, particularly if they are in good health and not in immediate danger.

During each encounter with refugee craft, the cruise ship would contact both local maritime authorities as well as the cruise line’s own shoreside team to report the incident. Further action may be undertaken by the authorities as needed.

This time of year – as winter storms are dwindling but hurricane season has not yet begun – is popular for similar refugee encounters in the Caribbean. The close proximity of many islands and popular shipping and cruise travel routes make it easier for desperate individuals to take the monumental risks of setting off in less-than-seaworthy craft.

All cruise ships remain alert at all hours to the possibility of sighting small craft, and stand ready to offer assistance and rescue whenever necessary.

Star of the Seas Delayed and Inaugural Sailing Cancelled

Royal Caribbean International has begun reaching out to travel agents and booked guests to alert them to a delay for the second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas.

This unfortunately means the inaugural sailing must be cancelled, but travelers will have options to choose from for their cruise vacation plans.

Star of the Seas Delayed

Travel partners and cruise agents have begun receiving notifications that confirm the delay of the second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas. The ship is scheduled to debut in August 2025, but her inaugural sailing must be cancelled as the ship will be unable to make the originally scheduled delivery.

“While we’re working hard on completing our newest Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas, and after a review of the work that remains to be done, we’re unfortunately forced to delay the ship’s delivery date,” the cruise line said.

This means that the ship’s first sailing – a 7-night Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day itinerary scheduled to depart Port Canaveral on August 17, 2025 – must be cancelled.

The itinerary was to have included visits to St. Thomas and St. Kitts, in addition to CocoCay. The second cancelled cruise was also an Eastern Caribbean itinerary, this one calling on CocoCay, San Juan, and St. Maarten.

Instead, Royal Caribbean has confirmed that the new Star of the Seas inaugural sailing will be the ship’s August 31, 2025 departure. This is a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, visiting CocoCay, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.

Bookings only opened for Star of the Seas in early December 2023, and while the ship has undoubtedly been popular, her numbers are unlike to rival the phenomenal booking when the first reservations opened for Icon of the Seas, the first ship in the revolutionary Icon class.

Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas

One option for guests booked on either of the first two now-cancelled cruises is to move to the new first cruise, the August 31 departure.

Other options include other alternative sailings on Star of the Seas or any other Royal Caribbean ship, as well as a full refund if passengers no longer wish to plan a cruise vacation.

No details about why the ship’s delivery must be delayed have been released. This could be related to design changes, labor shortages, supply chain issues, shipyard work schedules, or other factors that all have a knock-on effect for how a cruise ship’s construction can proceed.

The Icon-class vessel is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and still has several major milestones to reach, including floating out onto the water for the very first time and sea trials. Once completed, she will be similar to the sister ship Icon of the Seas, at approximately 248,663 and a passenger capacity of 5,610 at double occupancy.

Will the Next Inaugural Date Actually Happen?

Cruise travelers might be nervous about this new inaugural date. Delays for newly built ships are not unusual, and while two cruises for the new ship are now cancelled, it would not be unheard of for additional sailings to be cancelled in the months to come.

For example, Princess Cruises’ upcoming Sun Princess has had her inaugural sailing cancelled twice, with guests left scrambling at the last minute to rearrange their travel plans and make alternative cruise arrangements if they still wanted to sail.

Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas

Fortunately, guests hoping to enjoy Star of the Seas‘ inaugural cruise still have more than 17 months before the now-cancelled cruises were to have set sail, a plentiful margin of time for rebooking a different cruise, rearranging pre- or post-cruise plans, or making airfare arrangements with little or no penalties.

For the moment, only itineraries through April 2026 have been released, with Star of the Seas homeported year-round from Port Canaveral and offering alternating Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean cruises.

Cruise Ship Navigates Through Space Debris Warning Zone

In an unusual announcement aboard Princess Cruises’ Island Princess, Captain Marco Cataldi informed guests of a navigational warning tied to space debris that entered the Earth’s atmosphere today.

Cosmic Alert for Island Princess

Amidst the tranquil blue Indian Ocean, a message from the captain has added an unexpected twist to Princess Cruises’ Island Princess’ current World Cruise. In a briefing delivered to passengers on February 26, 2024, Captain Cataldi conveyed the details of a navigational warning received from the National Hydrographic Office the day prior.

“This warning is regarding space debris that will be falling into the ocean, an area that Island Princess will be crossing on the way to Port Louis, Mauritius,” wrote Captain Cataldi.

“We estimate that we will be at the boundary of the navigational warning on the 26th of February at 21:15. We will exit the area on the 27th of February at 9:30.”

Captain Cataldi was unconcerned with the warning, further stating, “The likelihood that any debris falls on the ship is about the same as any other day or location in the Indian Ocean; it is one of the preferred places to bring decommissioned satellites down.

“I do not see any concern in this navigational warning but feel it my duty as Captain to inform you of the possibility of this happening. If nothing else, it will create an elaborate light show at night,” he continued.

Satellite’s Final Journey

The space debris that triggered the warning came from the ERS-2, an aging European observation satellite that reached the end of its orbital life.

Launched on April 21, 1995, the satellite, which stands for second European Remote Sensing, was meant to have a lifetime of three years. Well exceeding that age, the European Space Agency (ESA) began to deorbit ERS-2 in 2011.

ERS-2 Re-entry
ERS-2 Re-entry

The satellite reentered the Earth’s atmosphere over the North Pacific Ocean at 18:17 CET on February 21, 2024, although the debris warning stretches to March 2, 2024.

Satellites like ERS-2 are designed to burn up upon re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere, with any surviving fragments falling into designed “spacecraft cemeteries.” These are vast, uninhabited ocean expanses, typically in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

“Uncontrolled atmospheric reentry has long been a common method for disposing of space objects at the end of their mission,” said Tim Flohrer, head of ESA’s Space Debris Office. “We see objects similar in size or larger to ERS-2 reentering the atmosphere multiple times each year.”

Captain Cataldi even highlighted the normalcy of the event in his letter to passengers, indicating the Indian satellite Cartosat-2 fell into the Indian Ocean just weeks prior, on February 14, 2024.

The disintegration was expected to be harmless, with the satellite breaking into small, innocuous pieces long before it could pose a threat to a cruise ship or its passengers. However, “experts treat it as one rigid object until almost the very end,” said the ESA.

The breakup of such a satellite is not always a precise science, and the debris size can vary. Although it is mostly metallic fragments that fizzle out harmlessly, the potential for larger pieces to survive the descent cannot be entirely ruled out, triggering the warning.

In the historical context of space debris incidents, Flohrer stated“In the 67 years of spaceflight, thousands of tons of artificial space objects have reentered the atmosphere. Pieces that make it to the surface have only very rarely caused any damage, and there has never been a confirmed report of a human injury.”

Island Princess’ Voyage Amidst Starfall

Despite the cosmic caution, life aboard Island Princess sails on serenely. The 2,200-passenger ship, weighing over 91,000 gross tons, is currently on a 26-night segment of its World Cruise.

Originally scheduled to sail from Melbourne, Australia, to Dubai, U.A.E., the ship was recently rerouted to sail around Cape Horn, Africa, in light of geopolitical unrest in the Red Sea.

Passengers were given the choice to stay indoors during the warning period, although Captain Cataldi stressed he did not believe there to be any risk to them or the ship.

The 175,500-gross ton Sun Princess, which accommodates 4,300 guests in double occupancy, will operate her inaugural, 10-day “Grand Mediterranean” voyage from Rome to Barcelona on February 28, 2024. The debut was twice postponed, due to additional work that needed to be completed before the ship left the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Sun Princess Cruise Ship

Sun Princess was originally due to launch on February 8, 2024, sailing from Barcelona to Rome, but that voyage was cancelled on January 24, 2024. A new inaugural cruise was scheduled for February 18, 2024, but that, too, was cancelled.

After her debut, the ship will sail the Mediterranean until early October 2024, then reposition to Fort Lauderdale for a series of Caribbean sailings in the fall and winter of 2024/25.

The new-build, the first in Princess Cruises’ Sphere class, will feature the most balcony staterooms of any ship in the fleet, and will offer 29 restaurant and lounge options, ranging from elite specialty dining to casual quick bites. The ship’s Horizons Dining Room is a three-deck-high space that can seat nearly 2,000 guests. Each level will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner services.

The ship’s entertainment focal point will be the Princess Arena, where several grand stage shows and musicals are planned, including “Vallora,” “A Pirate Quest,” “Stage Struck,” “Viva La Musica,” and “Fiera!” The arena is designed as a theater in the round.

Holland America Line to Offer Popular Game Show Experience

Guests setting sail with Holland America Line will soon be able to join in on the fun with a popular game show as the cruise line is bringing Deal or No Deal to nine of its vessels. The new entertainment offering is already available on other cruise lines and is regularly one of the most popular activities onboard.

Deal or No Deal Coming to Holland America Line

Cruise travelers aboard select Holland America Line ships will soon have the opportunity to join in one of the most popular onboard game shows with Deal or No Deal, an interactive entertainment show being brought to nine of the line’s 11 ships.

The game is managed by interactive technology leader TimePlay, who has created the game show in a format that is unique to each player and offers guests in the audience the chance to play along with pre-purchased game cards.

“With the growing demand for entertainment options, Deal or No Deal is a perfect addition to Holland America’s offerings,” said Aaron Silverberg, SVP of Entertainment, TimePlay.

The new game will not completely replace production shows, trivia contests, informative lectures, live music, or other entertainment onboard, but will instead be another option on the daily show schedule.

“We’re excited to add this program to our lineup and we look forward to guests enjoying this interactive game,” said Daniel Materassi, senior vice president of guest commerce for Holland America Line.

The cruise line has not announced which ships will feature Deal or No Deal or when the game may debut, though it is likely to be offered once or twice per sailing, depending on the ship, departure date, and cruise length.

How Cruise Ship Deal or No Deal Works

The popular game show is already a highlight of cruise entertainment schedules on more than 85 vessels worldwide, including ships with Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises.

Deal or No Deal may either be featured as an evening entertainment show or possibly as an afternoon option, depending on the individual cruise activity schedule. Onboard Holland America Line ships, the game show will be hosted on the World Stage or Rolling Stone Lounge.

Before the game begins, passengers can buy cards that both enter them into the drawing to become the featured contestant as well as the chance to play along in the audience if they aren’t on stage.

The selected contestant – chosen randomly based on the unique numbers assigned to game cards purchased – has the chance to win a cash prize based on which “case” they select, in the same manner as the popular television game show. Offers made by a mysterious banker are designed to tempt players to abandon their gameplay for a guaranteed win.

Simultaneously, guests in the audience can also play along on their own game cards. The more cases they match to the contestant’s play, the better prize they can win, ranging from free onboard options to cash prizes or even a free cruise.

This creates a high-energy, enthusiastic environment, as the changing results of audience winners are highlighted after each turn, letting everyone see what the winner standings may be. Guests in the audience can reuse their cards for each contestant in a single game session, making it an even better value for driving audience participation.

Game Shows on the Rise

Game show experiences are on the rise on cruise ships, as they offer greater interaction for crowds and bring more passengers into the excitement, as well as improving revenue for the cruise ship (depending on how play is organized).

Popular favorites such as The Price is Right, Family Feud, Press Your Luck, Wheel of Fortune, and other game shows are all making appearances as cruise ship activities.
