Port Description and Future Expansion

In fact, there are already plans to rebuild the entire port by 2026. In a partnership between the Alaska Railroad Company, Royal Caribbean Group, and Turnagain Marine, a state-of-the-art double-berth floating pier will be installed, allowing two cruise ships to dock in port at any time.

The plan also includes constructing a new 41,500-square-foot cruise terminal building, which will be outfitted with all of the latest passenger amenities.

It will even feature a bus terminal, which will be capable of transporting visiting passengers to popular tourist attractions and other major population hubs like Anchorage, Skagway, and Juneau.

Unfortunately, Wi-Fi is not provided inside Seward Cruise Ship Terminal, but there are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants in Seward itself where you can access public Wi-Fi. For example, the Sea Bean Café on 4th Avenue in downtown Seward offers fast and free Wi-Fi for customers, and it is less than two miles from the port. 

Getting to the Port

If you are hoping to travel to the Seward Cruise Port from outside Seward itself, accessibility is fairly simple, especially by Alaskan standards. Seward Cruise Port is approximately 140 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest and most populous city. 

For this reason, many people fly into Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC) in Anchorage and then take a short flight on a smaller plane to Seward Airport (SWD), which is located just 1.9 miles away from Seward Cruise Ship Terminal.

For those looking for a more scenic version, it is also possible to rent a car in Anchorage and drive the roughly two-hour and twenty-minute journey along State Highway 9, which connects Anchorage to Seward.

Transportation within Seward

If you arrive at Seward Cruise Port and you’re looking for ways to get around town, you will find that most visitors rely heavily upon taxis.

With several taxi companies operating in town, including Seward Taxi Co., Resurrection Taxi, and Aunt May’s Taxi & Tours, you should not have any difficulty getting a cab from the edge of the port. Currently, no rideshare services, like Uber or Lyft, operate in Seward, so cabs are your best bet.

Seward City Tours also operates a free shuttle bus with a pickup location on the harbor’s edge. The shuttle then takes passengers on a free 30-minute route through the town, with various stops at points of interest.

Keep in mind that stops are at designated locations, so you will have to walk from them. Fortunately, Seward is a small and compact town, so it is easy to navigate on foot. 

On top of that, the majority of the most popular attractions in town are located within just one mile of the port, so walking is really easy. Some of the town’s hotels and tour operators also provide complimentary shuttles to and from the port.

If you choose to walk from the port into the downtown area, a waterfront walking path makes it easy, even with luggage and daypacks.

The Intermodal Hub and Alaska Railroad

For those interested in exploring Alaska by rail, Seward Cruise Port offers a unique feature—it sits adjacent to the Alaska Railroad. This means passengers can easily transition from traveling by cruise ship to railcar or vice versa.

The park entrance is located right at the edge of the port, making walking incredibly easy. If you walk along the path, you’ll also see the Trail Landmarks Statue, which marks the original starting point for the world-famous Iditarod Race.

Explore Downtown Seward

These majestic waters and well-preserved fjords are home to some of Alaska’s most iconic species, including orcas. If you’re looking to see Alaska’s Rugged beauty first-hand, the park is the ideal place to do so.

Despite its relatively small size, Seward boasts some impressive culinary options. There are numerous options, and the seafood and other ingredients are incredibly fresh. 

If you are looking to eat close to the port, there are plenty of waterfront options, including Chinooks, a favorite amongst locals and visitors alike. With fresh, seasonal ingredients and unique dishes, like Thai-style grilled salmon, it’s a great option.

If you’re just looking for a sweet treat, Harbor Street Creamery offers homemade ice cream and smoothies, perfect for walking along Seward Waterfront Park.

Disney Cruise Line Announces New 2025-26 Sailings

Disney Cruise Line has announced its sailing itineraries for fall 2025 through spring 2026, introducing a variety of destinations across the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, and the Pacific. The itineraries, which continue to follow this season’s sailing routes, include several themed voyages.

Disney Cruise Line’s upcoming schedule features the Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and Disney Dream, all set to visit Disney’s exclusive island destinations, Disney Castaway Cay and the brand-new Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which welcomed its first guests on June 10, 2024.

Starting in October 2025 through May 2026, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will be a staple for shorter Caribbean getaways. Both 4,000-passenger weighing 144,000 gross tons will offer 3- to 5-night sailings from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas, where both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay await. 

Fort Lauderdale will serve as the departure point to the Bahamas for 3- to 5-night sailings on the 4,000-passenger Disney Dream, also featuring Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay. Additionally, the slightly smaller ship at less than 130,000 gross tons will offer 7-night sailings San Juan, Puerto Rico, to explore the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean, running from October 2025 to May 2026.

Disney Magic, the oldest and smallest ship in the fleet at 83,000 gross tons, will also operate 7-night sailings from San Juan to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean from October to November 2025.

Then, from November 2025 to May 2026, the 2,400-passenger ship will reposition to the Gulf of Mexico to offer 4- to 7-night voyages from Galveston, Texas, with stops in Cozumel and Progresso, Mexico.

Also sailing in the Eastern and Western Caribbean will be the new Disney Treasure, which embarks on its inaugural cruise in December 2024. Also a 4,000-passenger, 144,000-gross-ton ship, its first season will feature a similar itinerary from Port Canaveral.

Only Disney Wonder will veer from the U.S. and will be deployed for Australia and New Zealand from October 2025 to February 2026. These voyages will range from 3 to 10 nights, exploring destinations in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, including Wellington, New Zealand, and Hobart, Australia.

But the 1,750-passenger ship weighing 85,000 gross tons will reposition to San Diego, California, from March to May 2026. From there, it will offer 3- to 4-night sailings along the Pacific Coast and Beja Peninsula, with stops at Catalina Islands and Ensenada, Mexico, much as it did earlier this year.

Themed sailings will also be available with the return of the popular Halloween on the High Seas offered on select sailing in September and October 2025, and Very Merrytime Cruises available in November and December 2025, providing seasonal experiences for guests.

Bookings for these itineraries open to the public on June 28, 2024.

Disney Ships Visiting Disney Destinations This Summer

Following the grand opening of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney Magic and Disney Wish are each spending summer through Halloween traveling between Fort Lauderdale and the new destination, as well as Castaway Cay.

Magic will leave the Caribbean for Galveston in November, while Wish will remain the main ship taking passengers to private destinations.

Disney Fantasy is currently sailing slightly longer cruises in the Western and Eastern Caribbean, with calls in Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Mexico, the Bahamas, and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Of course, they also visit Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay.

Missing out on the Bahamas’ fun is Disney Wonder, which is enjoying itineraries in Alaska from a homebase in Vancouver.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ship to Host Rock Cruise in 2025

Music promoter On the Blue Cruises announced it will present a 5-night Monsters of Rock Cruise aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in spring 2025, featuring a slew of rock band performances and other interactive events for guests.

The full-ship charter of Norwegian Joy will depart the Port of Miami on March 10, 2025, and make two port calls, one at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island destination in the Bahamas, and another at Nassau, Bahamas.

With nearly 40 bands already lined up, the rock cruise — dubbed MORC ’25 —will be hosted by Eddie Trunk, the radio personality known for his hard rock and heavy metal radio and television shows. A group of co-hosts will join the sailing as well, serving as moderators for musician Q-and-A sessions and other events.

Among the rock bands scheduled to perform are Tesla, LA Guns, Slaughter, Rose Tattoo, Aldo Nova, Iron Maidens, Lynch Mob, The Bites, Midnight City, Hurricane, The Cruel Intentions, Winger, and Michael Schenker.

The performances are just part of the Monsters of Rock Cruise, which in 2025 will mark its 13th year as a theme cruise at sea. Along with the bands, interactive events will feature Gong Show Karaoke, Cooking with Rock Stars, and Painting with Rock Stars. The voyage will mark the first time the theme sailing will be held aboard Norwegian Joy.

A sports event, yet to be announced, is planned, too, with a “Rockers vs. Average Joe’s” theme. Comedy shows are also on the activity schedule.

The rock bands will perform on multiple stages set up across the Breakaway Plus-class ship, which accommodates about 3,880 guests in double occupancy. Norwegian Joy, which entered service in 2017, was the second of the cruise line’s four Breakaway Plus vessels.

Other ships in the class include Norwegian Bliss (2018); Norwegian Encore (2019); and Norwegian Escape (2015). The class represents the line’s largest ships, all with a total capacity of about 4,400 cruisers when all berths are occupied. The ships were the first to debut Norwegian Cruise Line’s popular Speedway go-kart tracks.

The 167,725-gross ton Norwegian Joy also features multiple pools and water activities, such as thrilling waterslides, and for those seeking a quiet atmosphere, the ship offers the line’s adult-only Vibe Beach Club and the Mandara Spa.

As on all the Breakaway Plus ships, guests can book accommodation in The Haven, Norwegian Cruise Line’s exclusive ship-within-a-ship luxury area.

Guests to Enjoy Two Port Calls in the Bahamas

Cruisers booking the Monsters of Rock Cruise will spend one day at Great Stirrup Cay, the 250-acre private island in the Bahamas.

The destination offers a slew of water-based activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and jet skiing. The island retreat also provides a variety of eateries, including some that are complimentary and some with a cover charge.

At the Nassau port call, guests will find a new cruise terminal, recently completed with an investment of $300 million. Among the improvements to the port are a redesigned waterfront, more cruise ship berths, entertainment spaces, food sellers, retail stores, and a living coral exhibit.

Guests can choose from many active excursions and tours, such as the Dolphin Encounter and Atlantis Aquaventure, plus relaxing alternatives like the Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day. Top attractions in Nassau include the Pirates of Nassau Museum, historic Parliament Square, and the Cloisters and Versailles Gardens, on nearby Paradise Island.

Monsters of Rock has opened bookings for the themed cruise and set a cruise fare of $2,699 per person, double occupancy. The fare does not include taxes or a fee supplement.

PortMiami celebrated a significant environmental milestone as it is launched its new shore power facility, with Carnival Corporation’s Carnival Conquest being the first cruise ship to utilize this technology.

The initiative is part of a collaboration between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company, and several cruise lines, making PortMiami the first major U.S. eastern seaboard cruise port to offer shore power at five of its cruise berths.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, expressed pride in Carnival being the first to plug into the new technology, saying, “This is an important milestone for our hometown and we’re proud to support Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and all county and port officials for their amazing partnership in bringing shore power to PortMiami.”

The introduction of shore power allows docked ships to plug into the local electricity grid rather than running diesel engines, cutting down on greenhouse emissions while docked. The program has been implemented at Cruise Terminals AA, A, B, F, and V, home to MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages, respectively.

Carnival Conquest, which homeports in Miami, returned from a 3-night roundtrip cruise to Nassau, Bahamas, to connect to shore power ahead of its next departure, a 4-night Bahamian cruise to Princess Cays and Nassau.

PortMiami’s Shore Power Initiative

By utilizing shore power at PortMiami, which welcomed nearly 7.3 million cruise passengers in 2023, the port will reduce emissions by up to 98%. It is estimated that the emission reductions from one terminal are equivalent to removing 7,500 cars from the road. With five terminals at PortMiami with shore power, that equates to 37,500 cars.

The Shore Power Program at the port was a significant investment with an estimated cost of $125 million divided across the equipped terminals. The funding was supported through grants totalling $21.7 million, including contributions from the Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Despite the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reporting that 30% of global cruise ships, which represent 40% of capacity, have shore power technology, it also revealed that fewer than 20 ports globally are equipped to provide the service to cruise ships.

Recently, the Port of Seattle announced it will mandate 100% of cruise lines homeported will be required to utilize shore power by 2027. Carnival Corporation currently homeports eight ships in Seattle.

Currently, 67% of Carnival Corporation’s fleet, which includes 27 Carnival Cruise Line ships, 17 Princess Cruises ships, four Cunard Line ships, 11 Holland America Line ships, seven Seabourn Cruises ships, and 11 AIDA Cruises ships, is capable of using shore power. 

Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to reducing its environmental impact, saying, “Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and minimize our environmental footprint.”

Shore power technology supports Carnival Corporation’s decarbonization efforts and aligns with its broader strategy to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The company has reduced its GHG emissions by over 10% since 2011, despite a 30% increase in capacity.

By the end of 2024, three additional ships in Carnival’s fleet will be outfitted with shore power capabilities. A partnership with Swiss technology provider ABB Group is set to add 30 more shore power connections to the fleet in coming years.

That said, while it’s not a dining experience that will appeal to everyone, it is an incredibly unique experience, a great option to consider if you want a “special” meal, but you don’t really like sitting in a formal restaurant where you’re expected to know your salad fork from your dessert fork.

11. Luminae

If you’re cruising on a ship that features The Retreat — the suite guests-only area on certain Celebrity Cruises ships, and that often feature a private restaurant, sun deck, lounge and more, only for suite guests’ use — then you have to take advantage of one of your VIP dining spaces at some point: Luminae restaurant.

Luminae is a high-end restaurant that’s completely complimentary for suite guests, and which serves breakfast and dinner daily. One cool feature?

The menus are exclusive to the restaurant, so that means that, in addition to having exclusive access to the restaurant itself, you’ll also enjoy exclusive access to dishes that no one else on the ship can order.

While the Magic Carpet sits on Deck 5, adjacent to Raw on 5, during lunch hours, for the Dinner on the Edge experience, the Magic Carpet moves up to Deck 14, where it’s an extension of the Resort Deck on Deck 14, providing even better, higher views.

While reservations are required, the Magic Carpet restaurant is one of the more casual specialty dining experiences on Celebrity Cruises’ ships.

14. Le Grand Bistro

For European eats in a French bistro-style setting (this restaurant has the French sidewalk dining experience down pat), go to Le Grand Bistro.

Here, you’ll find it easy to sip away at your favorite café beverages during the morning or afternoon (or maybe a glass of wine, if you’re feeling cheeky). Then, after dark, the bistro becomes a cozy spot for a casual dinner.

What About the Main Dining Rooms and Buffets?

You probably noticed that we didn’t include any of Celebrity Cruises’ main dining rooms or the buffet on this list of best restaurants, and we didn’t focus so much on complimentary dining across the fleet.

This is in part because, while Celebrity Cruises’ main dining rooms and buffets are perfectly okay, they’re not exactly over-the-top special — and for cruising foodies, you really want those special features that are going to ‘wow’ and make for a memorable dining experience, whether that’s the menu or setting.

However, if you do want to dine at the main dining rooms, you’ll find that most Celebrity Cruises ships feature two to four main dining rooms: Cyprus, Tuscan and Normandie, and then Cosmopolitan, which is featured on Apex and Edge-class ships. Each dining room has its own aesthetic.

All are generally the same in that they give you a multi-course meal that’s described by many cruisers as more or less just “fine.” It’s also been described as similar to wedding food. Think, again, perfectly fine catered fare, but nothing exceptional.

At the buffet, the quality is pretty much the same. However, many cruisers like a cruise ship buffet due to the wealth of options available to you, as well as the laid-back atmosphere. Additionally, many cruise ship buffets now offer cook-to-order stations, like omelet stations, for super-fresh bites.

Celebrity Cruises’ buffet is the Oceanview Buffet, and it’s open for three meals per day, serving up a variety of cuisines and items, with lots of staples like pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads, Asian cuisine, Mexican cuisine, hot dogs, burgers, fries, etc., plus bakery items and other desserts.

Holland America Line’s Resort Receives Certification, Rolls Out New Menus

Holland America Line’s McKinley Chalet Resort in Denali National Park has received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainable seafood practices. The recognition comes as the resort, located at the entrance of Denali National Park in Alaska, unveils new menu offerings.

Both Karstens Public House and Canyon Steakhouse at McKinley Chalet Resort received recognition for transforming their menus to serve sustainable seafood.

The MSC’s rigorous assessment ensures that fisheries and seafood suppliers adhere to sustainable fishing practices. These include ensuring the traceability of seafood throughout the supply chain, preventing the mixing of certified and non-certified products, and maintaining comprehensive records of transactions. 

Companies must also pass regular audits to obtain and retain certification, ensuring seafood is sourced sustainably and responsibly.

“We are proud to extend our promise of fresh, sustainable fish beyond our ships to our guests on Cruisetours visiting Denali,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage, and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our culinary team at McKinley Chalet Resort has done a wonderful job furthering our industry-leading program with this certification and creating inspiring fresh seafood dishes in our restaurants.”

The recognition follows Holland America Line’s achievement as the first global cruise line to receive the same certification earlier this year. In April 2024, all 11 ships in the fleet became Chain of Custody certified, allowing them to serve MSC- and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified seafood. 

The certification at McKinley Chalet Resort extends the cruise line’s certification to its Cruisetours, which combines an Alaskan cruise with an overland tour to Denali. The certifications are part of Holland America Line’s Global Fresh Fish Program, which aims to provide guests with high-quality seafood sourced sustainably when wild-caught and raised responsibly when farmed.

Rolls Out New Menus

All Holland America Line Denali Cruisetours include a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise featuring Glacier Bay, plus either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier, the Inside Passage, and up to three nights at McKinley Chalet Resort.

The resort, nestled on the shores of the Nenana River, now features updated menus. Karstens introduces new lunch and dinner offerings, and Canyon Steakhouse refreshed its dinner menu, all incorporating authentic Alaskan ingredients.

The updated menus include MSC-certified fresh Alaska halibut and steamed mussels at Canyon Steakhouse, along with a variety of new dishes at Kartsens Public House, such as seafood queso dip and alder grilled sockeye salmon.

Additionally, McKinley Chalet Resort offers various activities to enhance the guest experience. Denali Square, the resort’s 60-acre central hub, features live music every evening, a new outdoor bar named Denali Square Bar, and a range of educational and recreational activities.

Guests can enjoy Holland America Line’s exclusive De Lijn Gin, participate in “Life in Denali” educational talks in partnership with the Denali Educational Center, and engage with local artists through the Alaska Artist in Residence program.

The resort also offers nightly nature walks and S’mores by the firepits, family-friendly scavenger hunts, and guided activities to explore Denali’s natural beauty.

Holland America Line currently has six ships sailing in Alaska this summer. Ms Zaandam, ms Eurodam, ms Koningsdam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Noordam are traveling the waterways from homeports in Vancouver, British Columbia; Whittier, Alaska; and Seattle, Washington.

Seward, Alaska, is the closest port to Denali, where ms Westerdam called on June 16. The ship is currently en route to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on a special 28-night solstice cruise to the Arctic Circle, calling in Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage, Homer, Haines, and Juneau while visiting Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm.

Court Rules That Historic Ocean Liner Must Relocate

The controversial court case between the SS United States Conservancy and Penn Warehousing that would determine the fate of the legendary SS United States has officially come to a conclusion. 

The Conservancy that maintains and protects the historic ocean liner has been embroiled in an intense rent dispute with the Philadelphia-based shipping company after Penn Warehousing raised the rent for the ship’s berth from $850 to $1,700 (USD) without warning in 2021, which was unsustainable for the nonprofit.

In 2022, tensions rose when Penn Warehousing terminated the lease agreement and sued the Conservancy, claiming the nonprofit owed more than $700,000 in back rent after it refused to accept the rent increase.

While the Conservancy hoped to keep “America’s Flagship” docked in Philadelphia, where she was designed by a local naval architect named William Francis Gibbs, the US District Court of Philadelphia ruled that it was not to be. 

U.S. District Court Senior Judge Anita B. Brody ruled that the ship needs to vacate its current dock at Pier 82 by September 12, 2024, or risk being lost. The Pier served as the vessel’s home for more than a decade. 

“The judge’s decision gives us a very limited window to find a new home for the SS United States and raise the resources necessary to move the ship and keep her safe. We must do both to avoid the tragic fate that countless supporters from around the world have worked for over a decade to prevent,” said Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, the granddaughter of the ship’s famed designer.

The Conservation has already begun looking into potential pier locations throughout the East Coast that could accommodate the nearly 1,000 foot-ocean liner, but needs help from the public to secure enough funds for the nonprofit to pay for the move. 

“Relocating a ship the size of the SS United States is complex and costly. It requires funds for insurance, tugs, surveys, and dock preparations to ensure the ship’s safe passage to a new home,” Gibbs explained. 

The Conservancy is currently accepting donations as part of an urgent campaign on their website to help save this symbol of American ingenuity.  

A Lucky Break: SS United States Conservancy Doesn’t Owe Back Rent

While the order for 1951 ocean liner to relocate is a huge blow, the SS United States Conservancy did get one win. 

Senior Judge Brody determined that Penn Warehousing wasn’t allowed to double dockage fees without notice in what was an apparent effort to “force” the American symbol from Pier 82. She also ruled that the Conservancy does not owe any back rent. 

This is certainly good news for the nonprofit, which could have been on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in back rent had the court not ruled in its favor.

Even so, the cost and logistics of moving the old, preserved ocean liner puts its fate in jeopardy. 

“While the Conservancy was vindicated in not being compelled to pay a large sum of back rent to the SS United States’ pier operator, the ruling makes clear this iconic American symbol is in peril,” said Gibbs. 

The verdict also calls plans to redevelop what was once the once fastest ship in the world into question.

In November of 2023, the Conservancy announced a partnership with investment firm RXR and management company MCR Hotels to reinvent the ship as a mixed-use facility that would include lodging, a museum memorializing the ocean liner’s storied history, dining venues, and public green space.

In its golden years, when SS United States was actively sailing from 1952 to 1969, the 53,329-gross-ton vessel could accommodate up to 1,984 passengers.

The travel industry is very important to Greece, with tourism accounting for around a quarter of the country’s economy. However, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. 

In the post-pandemic travel rush, Greece has become increasingly popular – and desirable destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes, are struggling to keep up with the demand. 

Throughout 2023, Greece welcomed a total of 5,230 cruise ships carrying over 7 million passengers to the island. This is a dramatic 9.41% increase in cruise ship arrivals and a 51.26% surge in passenger numbers from 2022.

The staggering number of cruise passengers is causing overcrowding on the islands, maritime traffic jams that can be a deterrent to cruisers and other tourists, and hindering the quality of life for the locals – with a particularly severe impact on Santorini. 

“Santorini is the most sensitive, Mykonos will be the second. Though many Greek islands are straining under the weight of their popularity, these are the ones ‘that are clearly suffering,’” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Bloomberg. 

In 2023, Santorini experienced 800 cruise ship calls, bringing about 1.3 million cruisers to the Mediterranean hot spot – a 17% increase in cruise tourism numbers from 2022 that is upending the lives of the 15,000 permanent residents who live on the island. 

“There are people spending a lot of money to be on Santorini and they don’t want the island to be swamped,” Mitsotakis added. “Plus the island can’t afford it, even in terms of security.”

Meanwhile, Mykonos hosted 749 ship calls in 2023, which is an increase of 23% in just one year. 

While no cruise limitations have been put in place as of yet, Mitsotakis said it’s something he expects to happen in 2025. The new rules will likely include limiting the total number of island berths that are available to cruise ships and/or a bidding process to call on the islands. 

Several European Ports Limit Cruise Tourism

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic ended, cruising has been on the rise. The number of cruise passengers exceeded 31 million in 2023, with 2 million more people cruising last year than they did in 2019. 

With that number only expected to grow, other European destinations (and some in the US)  have already taken measures to limit the number of cruise tourism to prevent overcrowding and to mitigate the negative environmental impact that can come with welcoming a large number of vessels – and particularly older vessels that may not be as sustainable as newer builds.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ announcement is following in the footsteps of destinations like Venice, Italy, Majorca, Spain, and Barcelona, Spain.

In 2021, Venice implemented a new tourist fee to mitigate crowds on the Italian city’s busiest days – a rule that took effect earlier this year on April 25, 2024. The fee applies to visitors regardless of if they come by land, plane, train, or sea. 

In May of 2024, Majorca moved forward with new proposals to renew restrictions that would prevent mega-cruise ships from docking in Palma, the capital city of the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands.

If approved, the restrictions would continue to cap the number of cruise ships that can visit the port to three per day, with only one allowed to carry over 5,000 passengers – a measure that has been in place since 2022. 

However, the new proposal also seeks to add additional taxes for cruise passengers – including a fee to arrive in port and a separate fee to enter Palma. 

In October of 2023, Barcelona implemented its own partial cruise ship ban to prevent ships from docking at the Spanish city’s northern docks or the World Trade Center. The purpose of this change was to keep cruise ships further from the city center in order to lessen exhaust gasses in Barcelona’s most populated areas. 

Just a couple of weeks ago on May 24, 2024, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni announced that the coastal city would be taking additional actions to limit the number of cruise passengers visiting per day to address remaining overcrowding concerns.
