World’s Busiest Cruise Port Sets Busiest Record Ever

PortMiami is the Cruise Capital of the World and has earned that title without dispute by hosting a record-breaking 10 cruise ships on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

No frequent cruise traveler will be surprised that PortMiami is busy, but just quite this busy is a shock – on a typical day 5-6 ships would still be considered quite heavy cruise traffic.

The 10 ships homeporting from PortMiami all at once include vessels from seven different cruise lines, setting sail on itineraries ranging from 5-27 nights. Together, the ships will be visiting more than 35 unique ports of call on the sailings they began on the same day.

The longest itinerary is for Holland America Line’s Zaandam, which is beginning a 27-night “Amazon Explorer” itinerary that will visit unique and exciting destinations such as St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Tobago, French Guiana, Barbados, and more.

Of special interest are several unique ports in Brazil as the 61,396-gross-ton ship makes her way up the Amazon River. Zaandam will return to Miami on Friday, March 7.

In addition to that longest cruise, the record-breaking fleet homeporting simultaneously from PortMiami includes:

  • Carnival Sunrise on a 5-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Freeport
  • Independence of the Seas on a 5-night Western Caribbean cruise to Grand Cayman and Jamaica
  • Norwegian Escape on a 5-night Western Caribbean sailing to Great Stirrup Cay and Cozumel
  • Norwegian Gem on a 5-night Bahamas voyage to Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay
  • Icon of the Seas on a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Cococay
  • MSC Seascape on a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing to Amber Cove, San Juan, and St. Thomas
  • Carnival Magic on an 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage to Aruba, Curacao, and Amber Cove
  • Scarlet Lady on an 8-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary to Amber Cove, San Juan, St. Croix, and Bimini
  • Oceania Sirena on a 10-night one-way voyage to Panama, including Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica

When the passenger capacities of all 10 vessels are combined, nearly 68,000 cruise guests are transiting through the same port on the same day, both embarking and debarking.

“It is no surprise PortMiami and the cruise industry continue to break records,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

“PortMiami is the departure choice for all major cruise lines. As a destination, Miami-Dade is undoubtedly the center of world cruise tourism with incredible weather, culture, and unlimited options for exciting experiences.”

More New Ships to Come

In addition to such amazing homeporting capacity on a single day, PortMiami is also set to welcome seven new ships throughout 2025. While some are day visits, others will be new homeporting vessels.

Of special distinction on January 21 was the arrival of Queen Anne as part of her 112 Maiden World Voyage itinerary, a tremendous voyage circumnavigating the globe from Hamburg, Germany.

MSC World America will debut from Miami in April. The brand new ship will remain homeported from the Sunshine State year-round with alternating Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean voyages.

Also setting sail from Miami in April will be Norwegian Aqua, the third Prima-class ship and the first of the enhanced Prima-plus subclass.

Norwegian Aqua will only offer two sailings from Miami before homeporting first from Port Canaveral and then from New York, before returning to Miami to homeport for the winter season.

Wonder of the Seas will be leaving Port Canaveral and redeploying to PortMiami in August, bringing another Oasis-class experience to the South Florida homeport. She will offer 3- and 4-night Bahamas sailings for great short getaways.

Following her Alaska season in Seattle, Queen Elizabeth will homeport from Miami beginning on October, offering Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean itineraries until early April, when she will return to Seattle. She will return to South Florida again after the 2026 Alaska season.

Brilliant Lady will begin setting sail from PortMiami in October, offering a diverse selection of Caribbean itineraries ranging from 7-12 nights. In March 2026, she will depart for Los Angeles and then Seattle to enjoy the Alaska season.

Finally, Oceania Allura will bring even more luxury and diversity to PortMiami beginning in November with a broad Caribbean season visiting ports in the Bahamas, Mexico, Aruba, Martinique, Bermuda, and much more.

With so many options from PortMiami, it is no wonder that it’s a favorite homeport of cruise travelers who are always interested in trying new ships and visiting new destinations.

Celebrity Solstice Cruises Cancelled for Longer Dry Dock

Booking the first sailing of a ship, whether the debut of a brand new vessel or the first return to service cruise after a dry dock, can be a gamble for cruise travelers.

It is always possible a ship will be delayed or dry dock dates changed, either delaying or even cancelling planned sailings.

This is the case with two upcoming departures for Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Solstice. While the ship has been scheduled to enter dry dock in February 2026, the cruise line has announced that more extensive work is needed than initially believed, which now requires that two cruises be cancelled as the dry dock dates have changed.

“We have discovered that Celebrity Solstice requires additional servicing beyond planned repairs and maintenance, which extends her currently scheduled dry dock period,” the email notification explained. “To ensure that we meet our high standards, and due to availability at the shipyard, we must advance the dry dock schedule.”

To accommodate the new dry dock plan, the ship’s January 15 and January 27, 2026 sailings have now been cancelled.

These cancellations will permit the ship to enter dry dock slightly earlier than originally planned, offering adequate time for the repairs, maintenance, and other updates. The nature of the overall repair needs has not been disclosed.

Celebrity Cruises is offering several replacement sailing options for impacted travelers.

Elected options include the ship’s 12-night departure from Hong Kong on January 3, 2026, prior to the dry dock update, visiting Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, as well as Bangkok and Ko Samui in Thailand. The voyage ends in Singapore.

Guests could also set sail on March 2, 2026 from Singapore to Hong Kong, or choose the return voyage from Hong Kong to Singapore on March 14, 2026. Both are after the dry dock dates, and these cruises are planned to visit the same ports as the January 3 departure.

If guests choose any of these three replacement options, they will have their original stateroom category price protected on the new cruise. If the new cruise is already a lower price, they will pay the lower fare.

If travelers have already paid in full for a now-cancelled cruise and a replacement sailing is a lower fare, they will receive a refund for the difference.

Furthermore, all guests who rebook on one of the three recommended sailings will receive $200-400 (USD) in onboard credit, depending on their class of stateroom.

If passengers prefer not to rebook on the alternative sailings, they can select any other Celebrity Cruises sailing as a replacement cruise, and any non-refundable deposit change fees will be waived.

This offer can be used for any Celebrity Cruises ship in any sailing region, and for any date currently available for booking.

Similarly, guests will still receive the onboard credit offer if they book any other sailing. Their staterooms, however, will not be price protected except for the three direct replacement sailing dates offered.

Full Refunds Available

If guests are unable to find a replacement sailing, whether on Celebrity Solstice or any other Celebrity Cruises ship, they can simply opt for a full refund of all money paid on their now-cancelled cruise fare.

This will be the default option if impacted guests do not reach out to Celebrity Cruises by Wednesday, March 5, 2025. If guests want to take the full refund, they do not need to take any action and their booking will be updated accordingly, though processing times may vary through different banking institutions.

Guests who opt for a full refund will not receive any further compensation, discounts, or onboard credit related to their now-cancelled sailing.

Celebrity Solstice debuted in 2008. The 121,878-gross-ton ship, the lead vessel in the Solstice class, can welcome 2,852 guests onboard and is also home to more than 1,200 international team members.

Broken Stabilizers Alter Cruise Ship’s Antarctic Voyage

The waters of the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica are renowned for being rough and challenging, particularly where the “Roaring Forties” and “Furious Fifties” latitudes send fierce winds from the west to the east.

In these waters, ship stabilizers, used to reduce the motion of the waves for passenger comfort and safety, are especially vital.

Which is why Seabourn Cruise Line’s loss of stabilizers on the Seabourn Venture has forced the vessel to scrap its upcoming 3-day visit to South Georgia.

“As the area around South Georgia often experiences heavy seas with large swells and with your comfort in mind, we have regretfully made the decision to alter our itinerary and will no longer call to South Georgia,” said Seabourn Cruise Line.

The company revealed Seabourn Venture’s stabilizers are not “operational” and that its Fleet Operations Center is planning a route for the smoothest sailing possible.

Set to embark from Ushuaia, Argentina, on February 11, 2025, after a flight from Buenos Aires on the 10th, the Antarctic expedition cruise was meant to sail for two days through the Drake Passage before arriving in Antarctica on February 14 for six days of its “Antarctic Experience.”

Two more days at sea would have the 23,000-gross-ton ship arriving in South Georgia on February 22, where Seabourn Venture would stay through February 24.

The ship was scheduled to spend two more days at sea before reaching the Falkland Islands on February 27.

Without working stabilizers, the vessel will now spend 10 days in Antarctica before sailing back through the Drake Passage and arriving in the Falkland Islands on February 25.

Instead of three days in the Falklands visiting West Point Island, Saunders Island, Port Stanley, and Isla Malvinas, Seabourn Venture has extended this route to six days.

Passengers will now also visit Carcass Island, New Island, and Steeple Jason.

The cruise line says the longer visits to Antarctica and the Falkland Islands allow the ship to “explore further than our planned itinerary, potentially exploring south past the Antarctic Circle,” in more sheltered and calm waters.

However, addressing the notoriously bad conditions of the Drake Passage, Seabourn warns of more changes to come.

“We will manage the timing of crossing through the Drake Passage to take advantage of the most optimal weather windows. This may result in additional changes to your itinerary, including earlier or later timing for the crossings to and from Antarctica,” said the cruise line.

Passengers can expect to receive more updates from the ship’s captain directly while on board, as the voyage is truly becoming more expedition-style and requiring more flexibility.

“When we plan our expeditions, our goal is always to take guests to the destinations they expect to visit,” said Seabourn Cruise Line“When changes are necessary, we share in your disappointment and deeply appreciate your understanding.”

The itinerary will pick up its original schedule and spend March 2 at sea before finalizing the voyage in Ushuaia on March 3, 2025.

Compensation Offered

Despite Seabourn Venture’s malfunctioning stabilizers, the 264-guest expedition ship is designed to sail in polar regions and is built to PC6 Polar Class standards.

To compensate for the changes, the cruise operator is offering each passenger sailing on Seabourn Venture’s affected voyage a $1,000 refundable onboard credit.

The credit can be used on kayak and submarine expeditions, spa treatments, and any onboard purchases.

Additionally, guests are being awarded a Future Cruise Credit worth 25 percent of their paid cruise.

That credit can be used for cruises as well as Flight Ease flights, pre- and post-cruise packages, taxes and fees, or travel insurance through SeabournShield.

TUI Cruises Takes Delivery of Its Largest Cruise Ship Ever

TUI Cruises’ fleet officially grew bigger on February 7, 2025, as the cruise line accepted its newest vessel from the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

The Mein Schiff Relax is the first ship in the cruise line’s new InTUItion class vessels, designed to incorporate advanced energy-efficient technologies and utilize Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) to minimize its environmental impact.

“Welcome to the Mein Schiff fleet, Mein Schiff Relax,” shared TUI Cruises. “The successful handover of the Mein Schiff Relax from the Fincantieri Werft to TUI Cruises is full of emotions.”

Fincantieri’s Chairman Biagio Mazzota, CEO and Managing Director Pierroberto Folgiero, and General Manager of Merchant Ships Division Luigi Matarazzo, handed the ship over to TUI Cruises’ CEO Wybcke Meier, CFO Frank Kuhlmann, and Mein Schiff Relax’s Captain Tom Roth.

The delivery ceremony at the shipyard was also attended by the Italian Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani, who said, “Today is a day of celebration for Italian manufacturing. Companies like Fincantieri hold the Made in Italy flag high all over the world.”

Since construction began in June 2022, more than 3,000 Fincantieri staff and partner companies have worked endlessly on preparing TUI Cruises’ largest ship ever.

At 160,000-gross-tons, the 4,100-passenger Mein Schiff Relax becomes the eighth ship in the fleet, and the first to receive her own name rather than a number.

Having aced its sea trials in October and December 2024, the new InTUItion class vessel will be christened in Malaga, Spain, on April 9, 2025.

While internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter Robbie Williams will performMein Schiff Relax’s godmothers will be sister ships Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 7, also on hand in Malaga for the celebration.

Mein Schiff Relax is now sailing to her homeport in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where the vessel will operate a series of pre-cruises as a final test of the ship and its crew. The first, a 7-night roundtrip sailing to Corisca and Marseille, France, and Barcelona, will take place March 2 to 9, 2025.

An 8-day roundtrip voyage follows, departing from Barcelona on March 13 to visit Palma and Civitavecchia (Rome) and La Spezia, Italy.

The ship will sail again on a 10-night voyage from Barcelona to Palma, ahead of her christening, on March 28 to April 7, and will continue to offer a series of itineraries between Palma and Barcelona through October 2025.

Future-Ready Sustainability

Mein Schiff Relax stands out with its dual-fuel technology that is built with alternative fuels of the future in mind. It can switch between LNG and more sustainable fuel alternatives like bio- or e-LNG, and incorporates catalytic converters that comply with Euro 6 standards.

Additionally, the ship is equipped with a generative turbine that harnesses residual heat from diesel generators, an electrical shore-power connection to facilitate nearly zero-emission operations, and a state-of-the-art thermal waste treatment system that can transform organic waste into recyclable materials.

For passengers, the ship offers a diverse selection of stateroom categories, including the cruise line’s first balcony cabins for solo travelers.

Guests will enjoy entertainment in a grand two-story theater, a large pool deck, indoor and outdoor sports and fitness areas, and dining options that include a five-course Japanese culinary experience at Fugu and classic French dishes at Sur-mer-Bistro.

As Mein Schiff Relax enjoys her inaugural season, Fincantieri is continuing construction of the second identical InTUItion class vessel, Mein Schiff Flow, will is scheduled to be complete by summer 2026.

Carnival Asks Cruisers About Popular Dining Room Event

Anyone who has sailed with Carnival Cruise Line is well acquainted with the “Shooooooooowtime!” event each evening in the Main Dining Rooms. But has the interactive entertainment become passe, and would cruisers rather see it have a final curtain call?

The “Showtime” offered in the Main Dining Room is a fun and often silly production not by the Carnival singers and dancers, but by the dining teams themselves – including waiters and assistant waiters.

The event varies by ship and changes daily, often featuring fun (and sometimes a wee bit naughty) dances, simple costumes, and a lot of smiles.

Guests are encouraged to cheer on their wait staff or even to join in the fun themselves by clapping along, following hand movements, twirling napkins, or even getting to their feet with a conga line or a spirited rendition of the Macarena, YMCA, or Chicken Dance.

Brand Ambassador John Heald answers dining-related questions multiple times a day. While most of the requests he receives are seeking a table for two, working to seat a large group together, or to change an assigned dining time, he does occasionally field comments about “Showtime.”

One such comment – it was hardly a request and more of a demand – became part of a poll Heald recently ran through his Facebook page.

“As a double diamond the showtime announcement is beyond annoying. To me it just holds up the dining room for service and slows the meal down,” the guest commented. “It’s time for these infantile announcements and so named shows to be cancelled.”

Heald did not reveal what ship the guest may have sailed on recently to warrant such a comment, but the amount of energy and wackiness put into each dining showtime will vary greatly.

The guest claiming to be “double diamond” is an interesting show of elitism, but Carnival Cruise Line does not have any loyalty level with that designation. The Diamond level of the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) program denotes anyone who has sailed with the cruise line for a minimum of 200 days.

By “double diamond” the guest may be referring to their own sailing status of over 400 days, or they could even be noting that they are speaking as one voice for two travelers – double “diamond” cruisers.

Heald offered their comment as part of his poll, which as of this writing, has received more than 70,600 votes. Of those votes, only 4% (approximately 2,800 votes) agree with the original poster that Showtime should be cancelled.

In contrast, a total of 30% of the votes (roughly 21,100 votes) still enjoy the activity and would prefer that it remain a staple of the Main Dining Room experience.

What If You Don’t Like Showtime?

It is true that the Showtime fun can slightly interrupt dinner service. From the time the staff begins to prepare for the fun to the end of the singing and dancing can be a total of 15-20 minutes.

While this isn’t a long time period, it can feel long if you’re waiting for dessert or may be getting close to the time another activity starts, such as a comedy show or a game show, and you don’t want to miss out.

Carnival Dining Room Showtime
Carnival Dining Room Showtime

No guest is ever forced to participate in Showtime, and while the staff may encourage passengers to join in, there is more than enough fun to go around so no one feels obligated.

Typically, Showtime falls between the entree and dessert courses of the meal. Guests who don’t want to stay in the Main Dining Room for the performance can easily leave and investigate dessert options on the Lido deck if they prefer.

Another option is for guests to choose Your Time Dining and opt to check in for their meal earlier. Many times my husband and I have exercised this option and have thoroughly enjoyed our meal, including dessert, and left before Showtime begins.

No Showtime performances are held in the Lido Marketplace all-you-can-eat buffet or in any onboard specialty restaurants. These dining options may be preferable for guests who feel uncomfortable or dislike Showtime.

Cruise Passenger in Wheelchair Left in Tears After Incident

While embarkation day can always be a bit hectic, one woman was left in tears on the first day of her cruise after an unfortunate incident in the elevator.

Wendi Fletcher, who hails from Manchester, England, was originally excited to embark on a Mediterranean voyage with her husband, Tony Fletcher, back in April of 2024 – although it’s not clear what cruise line she was sailing with.

The 54-year-old woman was diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) in 2019, and suffers from symptoms like blurred vision, heaviness in her left arm, and facial numbness that can impact her mobility.

With her physical limitations in mind, Wendi and her family have found cruising to be one of the best ways for her to travel and see the world. She just remembers to pack her self-propelled wheelchair, walking stick, and an elbow crutch to use as aids depending on how she is feeling each day of the cruise.

But on the first day of this particular voyage, Wendi was using her wheelchair when she got into an elevator with an unidentified family that consisted of an elderly mother, daughter, and one of their husbands – and the daughter was ready to pick a fight.

“I think this woman was having a really bad day. She said straight away as I got into the lift, ‘You’ve just hit my 90-year-old mother’. She suggested that I’d wheeled my wheelchair in and pushed it into her mother, but I 100% knew that I hadn’t touched her mum,” Wendi told The Mirror, a British news outlet.

When Wendi explained that she did not hit her fellow cruiser, the daughter allegedly laughed and rammed Wendi’s wheelchair, throwing her off balance.

“I explained I have Multiple Sclerosis and struggle with my balance, but she said she didn’t care and that if she sees me around the ship again, she’ll push me again,” Wendi added.

“To me, that’s an assault on a disabled person. She knew full well about my disability, and I explained that to her. I consider that to be a disability hate crime. I was really upset about it and literally gobsmacked that she would be like that,” she continued.

Wendi was left in tears after the incident. She tried to enjoy her sailing, but spent the remainder of the cruise on edge and worried she would run into the hostile passenger again.

The other family’s identities have been kept private and they have not issued any public statements regarding the confrontation.

Elevator Etiquette is a Source of Contention

It’s unclear if the Fletchers reported the incident to the crew members, but if something like this ever happens to you, the guest services team, onboard medical center, and/or the security team should be able to help.

Unfortunately, Wendi’s story isn’t an isolated incident – with other cruise fans sharing stories of guests risking injuries to themselves and others by rushing into the elevators the moment the doors open.

“This lady ran over my 67 year old mother to get in elevator. We followed…. She then had the nerve to request me to press 1 for her…,” one woman shared in a cruise forum.

“People not waiting for others to exit elevators first…before stampede to get in one…Common sense will tell you they’re gonna have to get off and you…ugh. Nevermind,” another person added to the thread.

Just over a year ago in January 2024, Carnival Cruise Line had to issue a reminder for passengers to be courteous when it comes to using the elevators – including among disabled passengers.

Some guests were expressing concerns regarding wheelchairs and mobility scooters taking up all the space inside the elevators, as well as complaining about safety concerns associated with “aggressive driving” they had seen onboard.

Several guests reported incidents of being hit by mobility scooters in both elevators and common spaces to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald.

“Can I ask mobility scooter users to please drive carefully? Most of you do and are respectful to other road users, or deck users in this case. But a few do drive too quickly and this can result in a broken toe or as on a ship recently, three broken toes,” Heald wrote on his public Facebook page at the time.

In July of 2024, the use of mobility aids onboard once again caused controversy for Carnival – with cruisers calling for guests with scooters and wheelchairs to get their own reserved elevators onboard due to continued faux pas with elevator etiquette.

New MSC Terminal to Disembark First Passengers, With Limitations

Some current MSC Cruises guests just received word that they will become part of cruising history – as they will be among the first to disembark in MSC’s brand new cruise terminal in PortMiami, Florida.

So, who are the lucky passengers who get an early look at the state-of-the-art facilities? The up to 5,877 guests currently onboard MSC Seascape will disembark at the nearly complete terminal when the Seaside EVO-class vessel next returns to PortMiami at the end of a 14-night Caribbean cruise on February 8, 2025.

“When your cruise ends, you’ll be one of the first guests to experience our brand-new, state-of-the-art PortMiami Terminal, which will not only be the world’s most technologically advanced cruise terminal, but also the largest,” reads a letter from MSC Cruises that was distributed to guests on February 7, 2025.

But while the news is exciting, it’s also important to note that the new facilities are not yet fully operational. For example, the escalators will not yet be up and running – with elevators reserved exclusively for disabled passengers or families with small children and strollers.

“As we complete the commissioning of the new terminal, we apologize in advance that the escalators will not be available for tomorrow’s call. Guests will be required to walk down the two flights of stairs to enter the luggage hall,” the letter states.

Because the escalators will be out of service, the cruise line is strongly urging guests to check their luggage for their own safety – especially larger suitcases. MSC wants guests to have their hands free to hold onto the safety railings as they make their way down the stairs.

“Because of the unavailability of the escalators, we hereby strongly discourage you to disembark from the vessel with your own luggage,” continues the letter.

The housekeeping team will retrieve luggage from outside guest staterooms on February 7, 2025, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. All checked luggage will be waiting to be picked up inside the terminal the next morning.

Complimentary shuttle service will also be provided from the new terminal to the parking at Terminal C, where guests initially embarked on their sailing on January 25, 2025.

Is the New Cruise Terminal Really Ready?

This milestone has been a long time coming, as MSC first broke ground on what is now the largest cruise terminal in North America on March 10, 2022. The project was expected to cost $350 million, although more recent reports suggest it was actually closer to $450 million.

While the terminal was originally expected to open in December 2023, it is just now making its debut more than a year late in 2025 – though some are still wondering why it is receiving guests if it’s not yet fully functional.

“That sounds terrible. They aren’t ready to be open,” one MSC fan wrote on Facebook in response to the news.

“Sounds like you’re in for a real s—show,” another quipped.

But while this surprise disembarkation will inevitably cause some inconvenience, it may still be an important part of the process for training new port employees and working out the kinks during the terminal’s early days – before it builds to hosting up to three MSC ships at once and up to 36,000 passengers per day.

Not long ago, MSC Seaside’s January 26, 2025, embarkation was also delayed due to terminal construction and pier availability within PortMiami.

While the hope was that this 7-night Caribbean cruise would be among the first to set sail from the new terminal, more time was needed to complete construction

With the change made last minute, the only workable solution was to delay MSC Seaside’s return to her homeport – pushing back disembarkation for guests of the previous January 19 sailing and moving her next departure from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST.

All that said, once the new terminal is fully operational and officially up and running, there is little doubt that the new facilities will live up to the high expectations.

Final Journey for SS United States Delayed at Last Minute

After around 28 years docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the famous SS United States was hours away from a pier transfer on February 6, 2025. It would have been the first step in beginning her final voyage, but the US Coast Guard called for a delay.

She was then supposed to officially leave Philadelphia on Saturday, February 8, 2025 – just two days after the pier transfer – with her final departure now also delayed.

The historic flagship will eventually be bound for Mobile, Alabama, where she will be prepared to take on a new life as the world’s largest artificial coral reef under the ownership of Okaloosa County, Florida – which purchased the ocean liner in October 2024.

However, these plans will have to wait until the US Coast Guard can ensure a safe and proper tow for the 1952-launched vessel can be accomplished.

“Plans to move the SS United States from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Mobile, Alabama, have been delayed due to follow-up details requested by the US Coast Guard to ensure a proper tow from Pier 82 to Pier 80,” reads a statement from Okaloosa County.

The original plan was for the former ocean liner to be moved laterally from Pier 82 to Pier 80 on February 6 – ahead of being towed out of Philadelphia two days later.

Tug boats were then supposed to maneuver the ship down the Delaware River during the low tide in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 8. But of course, neither of these steps have taken place yet and new dates have not been selected.

“Because of the delay of the pier transition, the departure tow out of Philadelphia originally planned for Feb. 8, 2025, has been delayed. A new date has not been set for departure,” continued the Okaloosa County statement.

Perhaps the third time will be the charm, as this is actually the second time the 53,330-gross ton vessel’s final voyage has been delayed.

She was originally supposed to begin her final oceangoing voyage on November 15, 2024, but this was postponed due to potential poor weather and more time needed to work out “logistical details.”

Honoring the Legacy of SS United States

As one of the first great record-breaking ocean liners of the twentieth century, SS United States became a symbol of American innovation, ingenuity, and of the American Dream.

Originally designed by naval architect William Francis Gibbs, “America’s Flagship” was once an important innovative achievement of American engineering. At 990 feet long and capable of speeds over 38 knots, the liner was once the fastest and largest passenger ship ever built in the US.

To this day, the old ship still holds the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing by an ocean liner.

In her heyday, the historic ocean liner could accommodate up to 1,928 passengers and 1,044 crew members. She was in service from 1952 to 1969, originally retiring in Virginia before relocating to Philadelphia in 1996.

The SS United States Conservancy, which was founded in 2009, has worked hard to protect the legacy of the vessel it’s named for – and fought a years-long legal battle to try to keep the ship docked in her Philadelphia home.

But once a judge ruled that the ocean liner must relocate, selling her to Okaloosa County to become an artificial reef was the best compromise to honor her history.

Not only will she take on a new purpose benefitting marine life, but the Florida county will also open a shoreside museum in Destin – which is located in the Florida Panhandle – that will highlight her history as a symbol of American ingenuity.

The process of preparing the ship to be converted and scuttled is expected to take at least a year. There is not yet a confirmed date for when the ship will officially be sunk or when the museum will open.

When she’s ready, her final resting place will be off the coast of Destin.

Margaritaville at Sea Hikes Gratuity Rates for Staterooms and Suites

Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville, with a more expensive bill? That’s right!

As of February 1st, 2025, Margaritaville at Sea (formerly the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line) has updated its gratuity guidelines, imposing a $2 per person per night increase regardless of the accommodation.

Previously, the gratuity was set at $18 per person per night for stateroom guests, and $22 per person per night for guests staying in Suites.

The gratuity now has increased to $20 per person per night for stateroom guests, reflecting an 11% increase in costs.

Those guests staying in Suites will now pay $24 per person per night, reflecting a 9% increase in costs.

Margaritaville at Sea does allow you to pre-pay for gratuity. If you have already booked your cruise and you have not already pre-paid gratuity, additional gratuity costs were added to all Margaritaville at Sea effective February 1st.

Consider always prepaying for gratuity at the time of booking your cruise to lock in the best rate!

If you do not pay in advance, gratuities will be automatically added to your stateroom account during your voyage, so expect an extra bill at the end!

What this also means is that if there are any gratuity increases, such as the one just implemented before your cruise, that is the rate you will be paying even if you booked your cruise when there were lower gratuity rates in place.

To put this into perspective, let’s say a 4-person group of friends go on a Margaritaville at Sea cruise for 3 nights staying in two Suites. At the previous rate, they would have paid $264 in gratuity, but at the new one they will pay $288.

So you can see that even a $2 increase, it can start to add up on your bill. But wait, there’s more! These changes to gratuity will also affect some additional services.

Also included in the update by Margaritaville at Sea on February 1st, service charges have increased to 20%, another 11% increase in costs.

This particular service charge applies to all specialty dining, bars, drinks packages, and St. Somewhere Spa & Salon tabs.

This is not the first time the Margaritaville at Sea has adjusted its gratuity, doing so most recently in 2024. This previous increase raised stateroom gratuity by 20% and Suites by 10%.

The upside for guests planning to stay in staterooms is that the recent gratuity percentage increase is in the single digits this year! Yay?

The best thing for passengers to do in the wake of these gratuity increases is to be mindful of their spending at any services and to budget to make sure they can cover the required gratuity owed at the end of their voyage.

What other Cruise Lines Have Recently Raised Gratuities?

Margaritaville at Sea is not the only cruise line that has raised gratuity costs recently. On November 1st, 2024, Royal Caribbean increased its gratuity cost by $0.50 a day.

For standard inventory, new gratuity guidelines will nominally increase from $18 to $18.50 per guest per day, while Suites will change from $20.50 to $21.00 per guest per day, Royal Caribbean stated.

Royal Caribbean has previously updated its gratuity guidelines several times since 2022, increasing its gratuity cost by nearly 25%.

The good news is if you book with Royal Caribbean and pay for gratuity in advance, you will pay whatever the current rate is locked in at so you don’t need to be worried about potential gratuity rate increases affecting the cost of your voyage.

Disney Cruise Line also updated its gratuity rates recently. As of January 22, 2025, the new rates are $16 per person per day for a standard room, and $27.25 per person per day for Concierge’s level staterooms and suites.

Previously, the rates were $14.50 per person per day for a standard room and $23.50 per person per day for Concierge’s-level staterooms and suites. This means that standard rooms saw an increase of 10% and luxury accommodations saw an increase of 14%.

Disney Cruise Lines allows you to pay for gratuity in advance, allowing you to not worry about potential gratuity rate increases ahead of your cruise.

All of this is not unusual, as cruise lines raise prices periodically over time to reflect the increase in all prices.
