Carnival Guests Offer Insights and Tips for Back-to-Back Cruises

A back-to-back sailing is a bucket list adventure for many cruisers, but how exactly does one manage the minutia of such a double (or triple, or quadruple) cruise?

One eager guest reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, about their upcoming back-to-back cruise with questions about how the luggage arrangements are handled.

“We will be sailing on the Vista in June. We have back to back cruises and we have different staterooms,” the guest explained. “They are only [two] rooms down from one another. Is it necessary to print out luggage tags? What do we do? What happens?”

While the guest does not clarify which Carnival Vista cruises they are on, the ship is homeported year-round from Port Canaveral, offering 6- and 8-night sailings to Southern Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean destinations.

Rather than offer a by-the-book answer, Heald opened up to comments from other cruisers who have themselves managed back-to-back sailings.

“It is really simple and rather than me waffle about it please, anyone that has done a [back-to-back] please share your experiences,” he said.

Many commenters chimed in with a variety of back-to-back experiences. While the process is smoother and simpler for guests staying in the same stateroom for both cruises, even switching rooms isn’t too difficult.

“Easy. No tags required. Tell you steward. He knows what to do,” one commenter explained.

“If it’s only 2 doors down, I don’t even pack. He brought a cart, piled our stuff on and unloaded in new room. He will usually clean your new room as soon as it is vacated. If rooms are on different floors, he will coordinate with the steward up there. I have done it many times.”

Other travelers note that sometimes items on hangers can be left on those hangers and simply transferred to the new room, while some cruisers prefer to pack their bags for moving to a new room.

Of course, with the cabin attendants providing the extra help of switching cabins, this would be an ideal time for an extra gratuity or a very sincere thank you for their excellent service!

How Guests Move Between Back-to-Back Sailings

Guests doing two (or more) consecutive sailings also need to be sure their own paperwork is in order. Printing boarding passes for both cruises is helpful, and experienced back-to-backers recommend visiting Guest Services during the first cruise to confirm that they’re on the list for the next cruise as well.

On debarkation day for the first sailing, guests still need to vacate their staterooms and will be told where to meet with other back-to-back cruisers for customs and immigration processing. This will usually be in a lounge or restaurant, and guests will be given their new Sail and Sign cards for the next cruise.

A crew member will verify that all B2B cruisers have gathered and will escort them off the ship for quick processing. After a brief stop with customs inspection (no need to bring any bags along!), guests will be escorted back onboard the ship.

On some sailings, depending on the number of cruisers remaining onboard and the individual port facilities, the customs processing might happen onboard and guests never need to leave the ship at all.

To commemorate such a special type of sailing, back-to-back cruisers get a coupon for a free drink as well as a free souvenir photo (restrictions do apply).

Once back on the ship as the very first to board for the next sailing, guests can do what they wish – enjoy a leisurely late breakfast, stroll around the nearly empty ship, or find a great people watching spot to see new cruisers come aboard.

The Bahamas Just Experienced Another Record-Breaking Port Day

0

Looks like the capital of the Bahamas is going to shatter its passenger records again this year if Nassau Cruise Port keeps up its pace.

After welcoming 5.5 million cruise guests in 2024, the port saw its biggest passenger day on record on March 11, 2025.

A whopping 30,538 passengers descended upon the island in the Caribbean via six different cruise ships docking at Nassau Cruise Port.

That day, MSC Cruises’ MSC Seaside, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream, and four Royal Caribbean vessels shared a call day, including Independence of the SeasLiberty of the SeasSymphony of the Seas, and Utopia of the Seas.

“We are thrilled to announce this incredible achievement,” exclaimed the port’s CEO and Director Mike Maura Jr.

He gave props to the Nassau Cruise Port team, its local partners, and the Bahamian community for reaching the milestone.

“Beyond the numbers, it’s about the joy of seeing families, couples, and friends making lasting memories together,” he added.

“It’s the smiling faces and the shared experiences that make Nassau such a special destination for cruise passengers.”

Operated by Global Ports Holding, which operates 32 of the world’s biggest cruise ports, Nassau Cruise Port saw four of the ships arrive at 8 a.m., with the vessels spending a minimum of eight hours at the dock.

Maura said this big day is just the beginning and that Nassau can expect “another banner year” in 2025.

Ready for More

Nassau Cruise Port anticipates nearly 6.5 million passengers in 2025, which will be a 15 percent increase over 2024’s already “wow” numbers.

The port has already witnessed a 12 percent increase in cruise ship calls in January and a 19 percent increase in February compared to 2024, and the ships keep coming.

Just today, March 24, 2025, Celebrity Cruise Line’s Celebrity Ascent, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Elation, and Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas each spent the day in port.

Additional ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean’s fleet will be arriving before the end of March, along with multiple vessels from MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises, as well as Margaritaville at Sea.

The ability for the port to host six ships simultaneously is the result of a $330-million transformation completed in May 2023.

During a four-year construction project, Nassau Cruise Port added a new berth and repaired and refurbished its piers.

In 2025, another $2 million is being spent to improve ground transportation services and expand the port’s ferry terminal capacity.

The upgrades will allow the port to accommodate Royal Caribbean’s new Royal Beach Club Paradise Island Beach Club, slated to open in December 2025.

The 17-acre beach club will be an exclusive resort for Royal Caribbean’s guests, featuring beaches, dining, water parks, and pools.

With the Bahamas owning 49 percent of the resort, it is expected to bring a boost to the economy, which is already thriving from cruise tourism.

It’s estimated that Nassau took in approximately $2.6 million in cruise revenue in 2024.

To further enhance offerings for its guests – and earn even more revenue – Nassau Cruise Port is also building its own day resort.

Currently under construction and expected to cost $35 million, the development will feature a massive water park for families when it opens in December 2025.

The port has plenty more six-ship days lined up this year, with four coming up in April very possibly creating another unmatched passenger count.

Arrests Made After Cruisers Detained Due to False Visas

Nearly one year ago, MSC Cruises’ MSC Armonia and the approximately 1,500 passengers onboard were detained in Barcelona, Spain, after visa discrepancies were discovered for 69 Bolivian guests.

The passengers in question were denied disembarking in Barcelona on April 2, 2024, after it was discovered that they did not have valid visas – which led to their detainment and an investigation into how this happened.

This came as quite the surprise, as there was no issue when the guests first boarded the 65,542-gross ton ship for a 16-night voyage from San Paulo, Brazil, on March 17, 2024.

Additionally, nothing was flagged as incorrect or invalid during the voyage’s earlier port calls on destinations like Tenerife, Funchal, and Malaga, Spain – which are part of the European Union.

Since the issue came to light, the belief has been that the passengers had been tricked into obtaining the visas and didn’t know they were invalid. But now, the people who may have been behind the alleged scam will have to answer for their actions.

As of March 24, 2025, five people were arrested in Bolivia in connection with the case as part of the joint investigation that has been conducted by The Spanish National Police, AMERIPOL, INTERPOL, and Bolivian Law Enforcement.

The identities of the suspects have not been released yet, but all five are allegedly connected to local travel agencies. The specific charges have also not yet been announced, and the investigation will continue with the suspects in custody.

MSC Cruises also came under fire at the time of the incident for not catching the fraudulent documentation on embarkation day.

Bolivia’s foreign ministry originally said that it was MSC’s “responsibility to check all the passengers’ visas before boarding the boat.”

To this, MSC replied that “it seemed all passengers had the required visas” – and the cruise lines do put passports and other documentation under careful scrutiny during the check-in and security process.

The ship ultimately remained in port while the cruise line worked “with the relevant authorities to find a solution to this complex issue.”

What Happened to the Passengers?

For many visiting the Schengen Area – which is an ID-check-free travel zone that includes Spain and 28 other European countries – a Schengen visa needs to be acquired in advance.

Worth Reading: Princess Cruises Guests Reminded of Visa Paperwork Needs

This visa allows Non-EU/EEA nationals to visit any of these 29 countries for up to 90 days at a time for tourism (such as cruises), business trips, or other short-term purposes.

US citizens would not need to apply for this visa as they can enter the Schengen Area with their passports, but the Bolivian guests would have needed to complete this process properly.

But even if made by mistake or unknowingly, documentation and visa violations have to be taken seriously for security reasons.

Of the 69 passengers who did not have proper documentation, 55 were adults and 14 were children.

The passengers were initially held onboard MSC Armonia for questioning and to figure out a solution, with authorities holding the 2,620-guest ship in Barcelona for two extra days.

This means that even passengers with correct documentation were temporarily denied from continuing the planned Mediterranean itinerary – which led to cancelled port calls across France, Greece, and Croatia.

At the time, some passengers reported that they actually chose to disembark early due to the changed itinerary and the uncertainty of the situation.

But eventually, the MSC ship was given the all clear to depart after the 69 guests with fake visas were relocated to another boat for police to continue their interviews.

In the end, 65 individuals were flown back to Bolivia at MSC Cruises’ expense on April 4, 2025. While some asked to stay under asylum, their requests were denied. The four people who were allowed to stay in the country had family connections in Catalonia.

If the suspects are found guilty, they will certainly have a lot to answer for in terms of the expense and inconvenience caused to authorities, the cruise line, and the more than 1,000 guests onboard.

Disney Ship Touches Water for the First Time in Milestone Moment

The Walt Disney Company is famous for making dreams a reality, and now the dream of bringing Disney Destiny to life is one step closer to coming true.

The upcoming Disney Cruise Ship, which is expected to enter service at the end of this year, has been under construction in Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard since the spring of 2024.

As her launch date steadily approaches, she has now just met a major construction milestone in which she touched water for the first time.

While many people might think that this moment refers to the “float out,” in which a new-build transitions to the open water for the first time, we’re talking about the “float up.”

“Last week, the Disney Destiny completed another exciting construction milestone at Meyer Werft Shipyard when it touched water for the first time,” Disney Cruise Line shared on March 24, 2025.

“The process, known as ‘float up,’ began by filling the building dock with water from the Ems River in order to lift the Disney Destiny from the floor of the chamber,” continued the construction update.

Once the 144,000-gross ton vessel had been lifted, she was then re-positioned within Hall 6 to allow construction teams and engineers to start testing different systems onboard, including the main engines

As testing gets underway, crews will also start turning their attention to the Triton-class ship’s interior design and amenities – which is a huge undertaking in itself.

“In the coming months, the shipyard team will continue to focus on building out the legendary interior spaces coming to the Disney Destiny,” the cruise line continued.

For example, the cruise cabins that were constructed and prefabricated at an offsite location – as was the case with the recently launched Disney Treasure – will be brought to the shipyard to be installed onboard in the near future.

The staterooms are themed after classic Disney heroes, with designs inspired by characters like Hercules, Mulan, The Incredibles, Raya (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), and Merida (“Brave”).

The Journey to Completion

Disney Destiny is well on her way to her maiden voyage – which is a 4-night Bahamas sailing that will embark from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida, on November 24, 2025.

During the Disney-themed voyage, the 4,000-guest ship will only call on DCL’s private islands in the Bahamas: The original Castaway Cay and the new Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Since her keel laying ceremony on March 20, 2024, the younger sister to Disney Wish and Disney Treasure has come a long way.

The final blocks, or sections of the ship, were put together at the end of last year – and now the ship’s exterior is nearing completion.

As of the previous update in February 2025, the bow art had been completed. While all Disney ships feature characters at the bow, the new addition proudly features Minnie Mouse as a caped hero – fitting the “heroes and villains” theme of the ship.

Now that Disney Destiny has gotten her feet – or should I say hull – wet, she can start looking forward to her official float out. This will likely take place in the late summer or early fall.

The float out is a more formal process where the newly constructed ship makes her way out to the ocean for the first time – and is usually commemorated with a special ceremony and much fanfare.

As the Meyer Werft shipyard is located inland to avoid storms in the North Sea, the float out process is somewhat complicated – as the ship will need to travel about 20 miles backwards down the Ems River to reach the ocean.

From there, she will be formally delivered to the cruise line and will have to undergo her sea trials to ensure she is fit to begin her career at sea.

Flight Change Causes Family to Cancel Carnival Cruise

It is well known among cruisers that you should always give yourself extra time to get on the ship, especially since travel plans can change at any moment.

The rule of thumb is to fly into the city where the cruise will be embarking at least one day prior to sailing, giving passengers enough time in case of delays for weather, airport closures, etc.

However, this extra time is not something everyone has the luxury of adding at the end of their cruise. This was a harsh reality for one family that had a flight change on disembarkation day that caused them to cancel their vacation.

One of the family members took to Reddit to share how booking with a budget airline ultimately led to the hard decision of cancelling their upcoming Carnival cruise.

“We originally had a 5 p.m. flight out of Miami on port day, but Spirit rescheduled it to 7 a.m. on port day back to Miami —making it impossible for us to make the flight,” explained the poster. “We were just a few days before the 100% refund deadline for our cruise cancellation.”

The family had wanted to stay an extra night in Miami after the cruise, but was unable to because of work. With their return flight being moved up 10 hours, the cruise was no longer an option.

Some commented on why they did not just change the flight, but since the cruise was happening soon, they were told rebooking flights would cost the family $2,000, which they did not have.

After realizing there were no other options, the family cancelled the cruise just in time to get a full refund.

They also received a full cash refund from the airline — but only after being on the phone with customer service for several hours.

Fellow cruisers took to the comments to share their grievances about booking with budget airlines, also sharing some of their unfortunate experiences.

“Personally I would never risk a flight with this airline. I’ve tried to fly them a few times and each time it was cancelled or delayed, I’d rather pay a little extra to ensure I’ll get to my destination or at least not have to fight for a refund or exchange,” replied one person.

“All the airlines change flight times, several flights have changed 3-4 times on me. My last cruise we ended up renting a car from Florida and driving to St. Louis because of changed flights,” added another.

The poster replied to several comments, even agreeing that the 17-hour drive to Miami would be more reliable in the future than booking with airlines.

Ultimately, the family was able to book a new cruise out of New Orleans — though the cabin was a step down from the one originally booked.

While the poster was a little disappointed about the downgrade, they did add that they were happy to be traveling anywhere with their husband and son — and that they know in the future to request additional PTO for cruises.

How to Plan Ahead

Something most, if not all, cruisers could agree on is that extra time is everything! Rushing to get on or off a cruise creates an unnecessary amount of stress for an experience that should be fun and relaxing.

Carnival Cruise Line does offer express debarkation which allows passengers to disembark early — which is a good option for guests with early flights.

To expedite the process, this option does require that passengers carry their own luggage off of the ship, which saves more time than checking bags.

It should be noted that the cruise line does recommend booking a flight no earlier than five hours after departure to ensure you have enough time to make it to the airport in time.

The Redditor who shared their story did initially book their flight for 5 p.m. but it was moved up to 7 a.m. — so what can passengers do in those situations?

There are several ways to ensure that your cruise does not need to be cancelled due to flight changes.

The first thing to do is to book your flights with airlines that allow you to reschedule or cancel if need be with little to no fees. Additionally, make sure to set up alerts when booking so you can be notified if there are any changes.

Then, make sure to keep track of your cruise’s cancellation period so that you can get refunded if your trip needs to be cancelled.

Finally, if you are able to, consider extending the end of your trip by one or two days at the final port to allow for a smoother travel experience back home.

All in all, planning ahead could end up sparing you from cancelling a much needed cruise!

Super Mario Named Royal Caribbean’s Top Cruiser

Just over two months after embarking on his 1,000th cruise, and a cruise enthusiast so renowned on the high seas that he has his own Wikipedia page, was just crowned Royal Caribbean’s top cruiser.

The 72-year-old Mario Salcedo, based in the cruise line’s hometown of Miami, began sailing with Royal Caribbean in 2000 and has never looked back.

These days, Salcedo – aka “Super Mario” after then-Liberty of the Seas’ Captain Charles Teige bestowed the nickname on him in the early 2000s – is notorious for booking so many back-to-back sailings on various ships that it is reported he only lives in Miami for two weeks per year.

Working remotely in finance from the pool deck of whichever cruise he happens to be on any given day, Salcedo received the top honor from representatives of the cruise line on March 22, 2025.

A fan shared the moment on Reddit, where a photo showed Salcedo has racked up 12,001 points by sailing nearly 51 weeks per year, including his 1,000th voyage onboard Explorer of the Seas on January 5, 2025.

During that momentous cruise, the captain and crew outfitted Super Mario in a Royal Caribbean jacket, calling the man a “certified LEGEND.”

“I would love life like Mario. I envy him,” said a passenger. “I know he has found the perfect life.”

“Talk about living the dream,” another said.

Other passengers have been quick to share kudos on social media – although Salcedo isn’t online – with many sharing their interactions with him onboard and calling him “an all-around great guy.”

Seafarer’s Dedication

Actually, “Super Mario” has officially been dubbed the “Happiest Guy in the World” by the New York Times, which profiled the cruise aficionado in 2018. The same title was used in a short film about the cruise devotee.

But Salcedo’s love for cruising didn’t begin with Royal Caribbean. Hopping on sailings on various cruise lines from PortMiami beginning in 1994, a passion was ignited that kept him at sea on back-to-back sailings.

It was in January 2000, however, when Salcedo embarked on his very first Royal Caribbean cruise, joining the 137,267-gross-ton Voyager of the Seas. And that, as the saying goes, is history.

Super Mario traditionally sticks to continuous voyages on his favorite ships, which, he jokes, is “Of the Seas,” meaning every one of the fleet’s 28 vessels.

With his 12,001 points, of course, Salcedo is a member of Royal Caribbean’s Pinnacle Club.

The highest tier in the Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program means he receives all the perks, including events with ship officers, priority everything, Wi-Fi, exclusive backstage tours, and access to Suite, Concierge, and Crown Lounges, among a host of other benefits.

It is estimated Salcedo spends more than $100,000 annually to ride the waves full-time, which, in the grand scheme of life’s expenses – mortgage, groceries, utilities, home and auto insurance, etc. – isn’t that unrealistic.

Salcedo uses his loyalty points from sailing, as well as his credit cards, to help fund his adventures and is notorious for choosing inside cabins to keep costs down.

Passenger Oversight Leads to Security Scare and Interrogation

What’s a cruise without a little adventure, right? Then again, for one unsuspecting couple, a recent voyage was a bit more exciting than they expected.

The cruise aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Breeze took a sharp turn during a routine luggage inspection that quickly escalated into a security concern.

The passengers found their bags flagged due to a knife, innocuously packed and long forgotten in the depths of a zippered pocket.

“On our recent Breeze cruise, we received one of our two luggage pieces,” the passenger shared with John Heald, the cruise line’s brand ambassador.

“We didn’t think much of it, but we checked back a couple of times and then our cabin steward knocked on our door and said our bag was being held for inspection.”

Turned out, inside the bag was a dive knife previously packed from an earlier trip to Cancun, Mexico.

The passenger, sailing on Carnival Breeze from its homeport in Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel and Progresso, Mexico, said she made her way below decks to a room full of bags and was asked to identify the bag.

She said the Carnival Cruise Line crew made them feel like a criminal and “gave us no apology or anything for being treated this way.”

“Mistakes happen,” she continued, complaining that the cruise line ruined the first day of the cruise completely. “Just saying,” she said.

But instead of apologizing to the passenger for the treatment, Heald used the letter as a teaching moment.

“The reason I am posting this is to remind people to please check your bags completely before packing to make sure there is nothing there that should not be there,” Heald said.

And for good reason. All weapons are banned and passengers bringing a weapon on board could face legal issues.

“All weapons and any items made, adapted, or intended for use as an offensive weapon, are not allowed,” Carnival Cruise Line specifically states.

This includes “sharp pointed weapons” and knives.

However, dive knives are permissible but, according to the cruise line, must be held in the custody of the Guest Services Manager or Chief Security Officer.

Cozumel Scuba Diving

To bring a dive knife on board, the passenger needed to identify and submit it during embarkation. It would then be available during dive excursions through the cruise.

While it was inadvertently packed, Carnival Cruise Line’s confiscation of the bag was appropriate.

A Close Call

This isn’t the first time a passenger has discovered a banned item had been left mistakenly in a bag before boarding a cruise.

However, this story ends better than some.

Last month, on February 26, 2025, a passenger sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was arrested in Aruba for possession of a revolver.

In April 2024, another Royal Caribbean guest was arrested in the Turks and Caicos for having bullets (without a firearm) in his luggage.

That mistake cost the passenger $9,000 in fines, not to mention five weeks in detainment due to the Turks & Caicos’s strict laws. The Aruba guest faces a minimum $3,000 fine.

The US also mandates no firearms or ammunition when sailing to the Caribbean, but dive knives, as the name implies, are items scuba divers often use when recreationally diving in the region.

Anyone wanting to pack a dive knife before traveling on a plane will need to pack it in checked luggage.

More From Cruise Hive

As for cruise ships? That depends on the cruise line and guests are advised to review their policies before sailing.

Some, like Royal Caribbean, have policies similar to Carnival Cruise Line and require dive knives to be checked in upon embarkation.

Others, such as Norwegian Cruise Line, do not allow dive knives, period.

Ship Delayed After Fatal Accident at Half Moon Cay

A sad and unfortunate incident at Half Moon Cay has claimed the life of a cruise guest after a jet ski accident at the private destination, delaying the ship’s departure and subsequent return to her homeport.

The fatal incident occurred on Saturday, March 22, 2025. According to Eyewitness News, the cruise guest was a British/Czechoslovakian woman, but no further details about her identity have been released.

The emergency alert was raised just after 1 p.m. and the police in Eleuthera responded to the call. Eleuthera is approximately 30 miles from Half Moon Cay, on a different island in the Bahamas.

No public police force is present on the private island, though medical personnel did respond immediately.

The initial investigation noted that the woman was riding a jet ski but lost control and collided with a rock. It is unknown whether she was the driver of the jet ski or a passenger on the small watercraft.

Some shore tours do offer both options, depending on available vehicles and the type of tour. Safety instruction is always provided before guests operate the jet skis.

Emergency personnel did render assistance but the woman sadly passed away.

A full investigation will undoubtedly be made to ensure all safety regulations, vehicle maintenance, and other regulatory guidelines were followed.

While the woman’s identity has not been released, the only ship visiting Half Moon Cay on Saturday, March 22 was Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam.

The ship was finishing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, having departed from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Half Moon Cay was the final port destination on the ship’s itinerary.

This is not the first time there have been difficulties with jet ski excursions. In December 2024, a Royal Caribbean cruise guest was injured on a jet ski excursion at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

A lawsuit regarding that incident was filed against the cruise line in February 2025 and is still pending.

Ship Now Delayed

Nieuw Amsterdam remained at Half Moon Cay for the initial investigation and to provide appropriate support to local authorities and the victim’s family members and traveling companions.

As a result, the ship is delayed returning to Port Everglades and both debarkation and embarkation for the next sailing will be much later than initially anticipated.

Incoming guests have been notified that embarkation for their voyage will begin at 2 p.m. All travelers must be check-in and aboard the ship by 5 p.m. Nieuw Amsterdam will leave Port Everglades at 7 p.m., just one hour later than originally scheduled.

Depending on exactly when the ship arrives back in Fort Lauderdale, that schedule may be adjusted again.

The ship’s next cruise is a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary that will also visit Half Moon Cay, as well as Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. At this time, there are no anticipated changes to that itinerary.

It is possible that any jet ski excursions for Half Moon Cay may be cancelled, depending on the findings of the investigation and whether or not the excursions could operate safely.

Guests already onboard Nieuw Amsterdam have likewise been told of the delay in arriving back to Fort Lauderdale. They have been urged to reschedule onward flights no earlier than 5 p.m. from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and no earlier than 7 p.m. from Miami International Airport.

Free internet access was provided for guests to make flight adjustments or contact their family or travel agent as needed.

If travelers booked through the cruise line’s Flight Ease program, their flights will be automatically rebooked and confirmed.

Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with the guests and crew members aboard Nieuw Amsterdam at this sad and troubling time.

Incident Closes Port of Jacksonville, Carnival Ship Delayed

Carnival Elation is not returning to the Port of Jacksonville as planned on Saturday, March 22, 2024, due to an incident on the St. Johns River that has temporarily closed the port.

Carnival Cruise Line has notified guests embarking on Saturday that their embarkation will be delayed. Travelers have been asked to shift their terminal arrival time three hours later than originally scheduled.

To be clear, there are no problems whatsoever with the cruise ship, and this delay is not weather-related. As soon as the US Coast Guard (USCG) has reopened the port, Carnival Elation will proceed to the cruise terminal.

The incident occurred Friday evening at approximately 8 p.m. when an 18-foot boat near the Dames Point Bridge – just east of the cruise terminal – capsized.

With several individuals from the boat reported missing, the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department (JFRD) immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

“An incident has occurred on St. Johns River and the Port of Jacksonville is currently closed as the United States Coast Guard is conducting a search and rescue operation in the area,” the notification sent to cruisers Saturday morning read.

“Consequently, Carnival Elation will be delayed returning to the cruise terminal affecting embarkation as a result.”

According to First Coast News, four people were immediately located still aboard the overturned boat when the emergency search began. Four others, including two children, remained missing.

In addition to JFRD, rescue crews and boats from the USCG, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Wildlife Commission joined in the search operation. One person was found to have passed away in close proximity to the bridge, but the search continued overnight for the three remaining individuals who were still missing.

No information about the identities of the boaters has been released, nor is it yet known why the boat capsized. A full investigation will undoubtedly be held.

Carnival Elation is returning from a 5-night Bahamas sailing that departed Jacksonville on St. Patrick’s Day. The ship is due to depart on another 5-night cruise today, with visits planned for Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

While there is no immediate confirmation of a change to the ship’s itinerary for her March 22 departure, if the delay and closure of the port is extensive, it is possible that adjustments may be necessary.

Guests Asked to Stay Away From Cruise Terminal

At this time, embarking guests have been asked to stay away from the cruise terminal until three hours later than their originally scheduled arrival windows.

“Carnival Elation is still awaiting clearance to proceed to the cruise terminal,” a text alert sent at 9:30 a.m. read. “Please do not proceed to the cruise terminal until you have received our final update with revised embarkation plans.”

While waiting for the port to reopen, Carnival Elation held position approximately 30 minutes further east along the St. Johns River, on the other side of the Dames Point Bridge.

Once the ship reaches the cruise terminal, however, it will take some time for guests onboard to be debarked, proceed through customs and immigration processing, and leave the terminal and parking area.

Until the ship has debarked, there will not be enough space or parking availability for incoming guests to be accommodated.

Guests were updated just before 10:30 a.m. with the revised embarkation plan. Meanwhile, onboard the Fantasy-class ship, crew members are already hard at work to ensure a smooth turnover once the ship docks and they will be ready to welcome everyone aboard for the next cruise vacation.
