Carnival Firenze to Debut With New Shopping Technology

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship will debut with a new way to shop! Through a partnership with Effy Jewelry, guests aboard Carnival Firenze will be able to browse the jewelry selection using a new type of artificial technology. 

New Digital Kiosk Adds Convenience To Onboard Shopping Experience

Effy Fine Jewelry can be found on all 27 of Carnival’s ships, but the shopping experience onboard Carnival Firenze will be quite different from the rest. 

The Vista-class cruise ship will debut later this month with a 7-night Mexican Riviera itinerary out of Long Beach, California, which embarks on April 25, 2024. Guests onboard the inaugural sailing will get the first opportunity to try out a new digital kiosk to shop at Effy. 

The kiosk, which is meant to make it easier to browse Effy’s selection of more than 100 rings, allows guests to browse ring designs and zero in on which pieces appeal to their taste. It also uses artificial reality to allow guests to “try on” rings virtually – eliminating the need to wait in long lines at the jewelry displays or being out of luck if the ring in question isn’t in stock. 

“Showcasing Effy’s timeless pieces in this way, leveraging technology, creates a truly innovative and personal shopping experience for our guests. Our guests love Effy jewelry, and this new virtual component gives them the ability to quickly visualize how several perfectly sized pieces will look in a fraction of the time it might take to try on multiple items throughout the store,” said Luis Terife, Carnival’s vice president of onboard guest commerce.

While Carnival Firenze will be the first ship to offer the new kiosk, it won’t be the last. The cruise line will be adding the kiosks to additional ships in the near future, although they have not yet specified which ones. 

The New and Improved Carnival Firenze

Cruise lines have two ways to expand their fleets: They can build a new cruise ship from scratch or purchase a ship from another company. In the case of Carnival Firenze, Carnival Cruise Lines acquired the ship from its sister company, Costa Cruises. 

Carnival officially took possession of the 4,126-passenger ship in a small ceremony in Cadiz on February 2, 2024. Originally named Costa Firenze, the 135,136-gross ton vessel entered service fairly recently, officially launching in 2021. Even so, the ship has been undergoing a full transformation in Cadiz, Spain, over the past two months. 

Now that the remodel is complete, Carnival Firenze is on its way to Long Beach, California. At the time of this writing, the ship was sailing in South America, off the coast of Chiloé Island in Chile, making its way to its new homeport. Beginning on April 25, 2024, the ship will offer round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera and Baja Mexico, which will range from 4 to 7 nights.

Beyond the Effy Kiosk, the “Fun Italian Style” ship, which was inspired by the rich history and artistry of Florence, Italy, has other upgrades to delight guests. The ship will feature both new and old restaurants and diverse entertainment options, much of which is inspired by the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Italy. 

For example, the Palazzo and Medici Restaurant will present passengers with an upscale dining experience meant to be reminiscent of Florence’s eateries, offering gourmet Italian dishes.

After dinner, the Teatro Rosso, which was inspired by the opulent theaters of Italy, will host an array of performances, from musicals to comedy shows. Meanwhile, the Tuscan Lounge will celebrate the ship’s Italian heritage with live music and themed events.

For guests who really want to relax and unwind on their vacations, the cruise line is also introducing the exclusive Terrazza staterooms, which are only found on Carnival’s two Italian-themed ships (Carnival Firenze and Carnival Venezia), and come with elevated amenities like private decks, all day lounging options, and whirlpools. 

Search Suspended for Man Missing From Royal Caribbean Ship

The search has ended for a man reported overboard and missing from Royal Caribbean International’s Liberty of the Seas last week, without any strong conclusion. The US Coast Guard released a brief note about the suspension but has not clarified whether or not the man has been found, regardless of his condition.

The US Coast Guard District Seven (Southeast) has released a brief note confirming the suspension of search operations for the 20-year-old man reported overboard from Liberty of the Seas on Thursday, April 4. The search ended after six days without success, but the statement does not note whether any evidence of the man’s whereabouts has been found.

“The search for the 20-year-old individual off Great Inagua has been suspended pending the development of new information,” the note on social media read.

The search was suspended on the morning of Wednesday, April 10, six days after the man was first reported overboard. The troubling incident happened on Thursday, April 4, when witnesses reported that the passenger deliberately went overboard in front of family members at approximately 4:30 a.m. following an apparent argument with a family member.

The Broward County police department identified the man as Levion Parker of North Port, Florida, once the search was suspended. North Port is a small city on the state’s west coast, between Fort Myers and Tampa.

Alcohol consumption is suspected as a factor in the incident but has not been confirmed by the cruise line. Alcohol consumption by anyone under the age of 21 onboard a Royal Caribbean vessel sailing from the US or the Caribbean is prohibited.

The 155,889-gross-ton, Freedom-class cruise ship was 57 miles from Great Inagua Island in The Bahamas at the time and crew members immediately initiated search operations and alerted the US Coast Guard for assistance.

Now, without “the development of new information,” the search will not be continued any longer. Given the distance from shore, water conditions, possible inebriation, and other factors, the chances of a successful search are very slim.

New information could include any additional sightings in the search area, reports of debris that might be related to the man, or additional information from family members or any onboard investigation. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that any new information will be noted in this case.

Ship’s Schedule Not Interrupted

While there was a brief delay initially as search operations were begun, Liberty of the Seas successfully completed the 4-night Eastern Caribbean cruise she was sailing at the time, and has since sailed a 3-night Bahamas Perfect Day itinerary (April 5-8) and is now on another 4-night Bahamas sailing (April 8-12).

There have been no significant delays to the ship’s operation and her itineraries have not been altered in light of this incident. This is standard practice for any cruise line, even when such troubling incidents occur.

Royal Caribbean has provided support to family members, friends, and crew members impacted by this upsetting event, but to preserve the privacy of those involved, has released few details and no identifying information.

Liberty of the Seas is homeported from Fort Lauderdale through the end of April, at which time she will reposition to New Jersey to spend several months offering Bermuda and Canada/New England itineraries. The ship will return to Fort Lauderdale at the end of October.

Carnival Team Honored for Life-Saving Rough Weather Rescue

Carnival Cruise Line Captain Niccolo De Ranieri and his team on Mardi Gras received well-deserved recognition for a daring rescue the team performed in June 2022, saving 16 lives in strenuous weather conditions that would eventually become Tropical Storm Alex.

The honor was presented to Ranieri on behalf of his team as part of the Association for Rescue at Sea annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

Mardi Gras Team Honored for Extraordinary Rescue

Carnival Cruise Line Captain Niccolo De Ranieri accepted the Cruise Ship Humanitarian Assistance Award during the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS) annual awards ceremony on Tuesday evening. The award was presented in recognition of the ship’s outstanding rescue of 16 migrants in distress early on the morning of June 3, 2022.

At the time of the rescue, the 181,808-gross-ton cruise ship – then the newest and largest vessel in the Carnival fleet – was sailing north of Cuba in the Florida Strait as part of a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, returning to Port Canaveral. The ship was also working to keep ahead of severe weather that would eventually develop into the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.

Those challenging weather conditions made the rescue effort exceptionally hazardous, but Captain De Ranieri and his team did not hesitate to take all necessary steps to bring the 16 refugees to safety, using the cruise ship itself as a windbreak to shelter the rescue operation.

Once aboard the cruise ship, the refugees were all provided with food, water, and medical care as needed, as well as fresh clothing.

“Receiving this award is a humbling reminder of the responsibility we have as mariners. I’m proud of my team’s brave and coordinated efforts during this rescue,” said Captain De Ranieri. “It’s an honor to be recognized, and I’m thankful those 16 people were brought to safety.”

As is customary with such rescues, the refugees – 11 men and 5 women – were then turned over to authorities as soon as possible.

A Noble Maritime Duty

All cruise ships, as well as other vessels, are bound by the Safety Of Life At Sea agreements (SOLAS) and the 1982 United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, which requires that assistance be offered to anyone in danger at sea, so long as it can be done without serious harm to the assisting ship, crew, or passengers.

While the June 2022 incident was not the first time Mardi Gras participated in such a rescue, the exceptional nature of the weather conditions and the efficiency with which the large cruise ship offered aid speaks well of the skill and dedication of her master and her crew.

Mardi Gras is not the first Carnival cruise ship team to be honored for lifesaving efforts. AFRAS has been awarding this type of recognition since approximately 2004, with the more formalized Cruise Ship Humanitarian Assistance Award beginning in 2017.

In August 2004, the Carnival ship Holiday was recognized for the rescue of five Mexican fishermen.

Carnival Ecstasy was honored in 2021 for a rescue of an injured yacht crewmember during the industry shutdown in November 2020 near Great Stirrup Cay, while maintaining COVID-19 safety protocols throughout. Carnival Elation was similarly honored for a rough seas rescue during Hurricane Irma in September 2017, after the cruise ship was rushed out of dry dock ahead of the impending storm.

In addition to Carnival ships, vessels from Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, TUI Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Holland America Line have also received awards from AFRAS.

A variety of lifesaving awards and other recognition are also presented to United States Coast Guard members and vessels as well as other maritime ships and associated teams for their dedication to safety and preserving life.

Royal Caribbean Announces Two Ships for Australia in 2025-26

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas will make her debut in Australia in 2025-26, while Voyager of the Seas returns to the destination. The two ships will sail a series of 45 seasonal voyages of varying lengths Down Under and to ports farther afield in the South Pacific.

Two Ships to Sail From Sydney, Brisbane

Royal Caribbean’s 4,180-guest Anthem of the Seas and 3,600-guest Voyager of the Seas will be based in Australia from November 2025 to April 2026, sailing from Sydney and Brisbane, respectively.

Anthem of the Seas will offer 24 cruises during the season, including 3- to 18-night featuring Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Also, the ship will sail five coastal getaway cruises, from 2 to 4 nights, as well as a 5-night cruise calling at Hobart.  

Several 9- to 12-night voyages will feature New Zealand, and two holiday sailings, of 9 and 11 nights, will include Christmas and New Year’s.

The 11-night New Year’s cruise, departing December 28, 2025, will call at Picton, Napier, Tauranga, and Auckland, before returning to Sydney, for instance.

Sailing from Brisbane, Voyager of the Seas will offer guests a choice of 20 cruises, some of which include a new destination for the line, Luganville, Vanuatu’s second-largest city known for its white sand beaches and Pacific Island culture.

The ship will sail 7- to 9-night cruises to destinations such as Noumea, New Caledonia, and Port Vila, Luganville, and Mystery Island, Vanuatu. The series includes two holiday sailings, of 8 and 9 nights.

Guests looking for longer at-sea vacations aboard Voyager of the Seas can choose the ship’s 12-night repositioning itinerary from Singapore to December, while those seeking short getaways can select from 10 itineraries. The getaways feature 3-, 4-, 6-, and 7-night sailings that explore Australia’s coastal destinations, such as Airlie Beach and Cairns.

A 3-night “Sampler Cruise” is an at-sea sailing departing December 13, 2025, with no port calls, while the 8-night Christmas cruise departs on December 20, 2025 and calls at Luganville, Port Vila, and Mystery Island, Vanuatu.

Between the excitement of Anthem of the Seas making its Australian debut, Voyager’s return Down Under and more weekend getaways than ever before, the 2025-2026 summer season is one for the books,said Gavin Smith, vice president and managing director of Australia and New Zealand for Royal Caribbean

“Every kind of holidaymaker can make memories in more ways than one with a varied line-up, from short getaways to a longer sailing from Asia, and new experiences like the show-stopping ‘We Will Rock You’ musical production, ice-skating shows and six exclusive family adventures created by Royal Caribbean and the Wiggly Friends,” added Smith.

In March 2024, the cruise line revealed a collaboration with The Wiggles, the popular children’s entertainment group formed in Sydney, Australia. The pact will offer family activities such as character events, live concerts, and exclusive merchandise.

Both Ships Offer Exciting Onboard Activities

While the Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific itineraries feature popular and exotic port calls, life onboard the two Royal Caribbean ships will provide guests with plenty of thrilling activities.

On the Quantum-class Anthem of the Seas, which debuted in 2015, cruisers will find the industry-pioneering thrill ride RipCord by iFly, a skydiving experience. The ship also offers SeaPlex, a huge indoor activity area, and lively eateries and bars such as Boleros, with its Latin theme, and the popular Italian restaurant called Jamie’s Italian.

The Voyager-class Voyager of the Seas is an older ship that launched in 1999. Onboard experiences include The Perfect Storm, with its three-story high-speed water slides, an ice skating rink, and a laser tag game called Battle for Planet Z. Entertainment on the ship features the popular show “Broadway Rhythm & Rhyme.”

Royal Caribbean has a 28-ship fleet, with a new-build, Utopia of the Seas, set to debut in July 2024.

Princess Cruises Ship Cancels Port Visits Due to Congestion

Princess Cruises has reached out to guests on multiple upcoming sailings for the new Sun Princess to alert them to an itinerary change.

Rather than visiting Santorini as scheduled, the ship will be visiting an alternative port of call. While this switch may be disappointing to some travelers, it can actually lead to a better overall experience for a more fulfilling visit.

Sun Princess Itinerary Changes

Guests booked on several upcoming sailings of Princess Cruises’ new Sun Princess have been notified of an itinerary change, that they will not be visiting Santorini, Greece, as originally planned.

“Please note that there is a change to our scheduled itinerary. Due to cruise ship congestion, we will no longer call to Santorini Greece,” the notification email said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment this change may cause.”

For some sailings, the email goes on to explain that the ship will instead visit Chania, Greece as an alternative, though the port times have been adjusted slightly. The reason given for these changes is “cruise ship congestion,” which would indicate a very crowded and less enjoyable experience for visitors.

Worth Reading: Virgin Voyages Ship Will Miss Popular Port Due to Congestion

For example, Sun Princess was originally scheduled to visit Santorini on June 11, 2024. On that date, four other ships are also scheduled for the port – Star Clipper, Costa Fascinosa, MSC Divina, and Odyssey of the Seas.

When combined with Sun Princess‘ capacity of 4,300 guests, this could mean more than 17,000 cruise travelers visiting the island in a single day. Santorini itself only has a resident population of roughly 15,500.

Chania on the island of Crete, however, only has one other ship – Azamara Pursuit – scheduled for June 11, 2024. This means the community with a population of 111,000 will have a total of roughly 5,000 cruise guests with Sun Princess‘ arrival.

Smaller crowds mean cruise visitors can have their pick of shore excursions without worry that tour operators will be quickly booked, and there will be more opportunities to enjoy the local sites, attractions, restaurants, and more without feeling overcrowded.

When cruise guests have an unpleasant port experience, they may blame the cruise line for the crowds, but such an itinerary change can alleviate that issue and ensure a more enjoyable port day for all travelers.

Why Such Changes for the Sun Princess?

Some travelers question why an itinerary may be originally planned only to be changed just weeks before sailing, when cruise lines may have known all along what ships are scheduled for a port on what date.

While cruise lines do plan itineraries far in advance, not every cruise line confirms visits at the same time. It may be that when Sun Princess was originally scheduled for the now-impacted itineraries, fewer ships were confirmed for Santorini.

As schedules are tweaked, however, cruise lines can reconsider ports of call and make adjustments to ensure the best possible experiences for their guests.

Other factors could also be part of such itinerary change decisions. Pier or cruise terminal maintenance or repairs, shifting availability of local tours, changes in the local economy, and other considerations could affect itinerary changes. Even things like roadwork that will cancel popular shore tours could be a part of such adjustments.

When an itinerary is changed, cruise lines seek to give travelers as much notice as possible so they can adjust their travel plans if preferred. It must be noted, however, that guests are not due any compensation for these type of itinerary changes.

Princess Cruises’ Passage Contract, Section 8, specifically states that the cruise line “may, for any reason, without prior notice, cancel the cruise; deviate from the scheduled ports of call, route and timetable; call or omit to call at any port or place or cancel or modify any activity on or off the vessel.”

Only if these changes are due to a mechanical failure are guests entitled to any type of compensation. As this is not the case with Sun Princess, travelers should no expect onboard credit or refunds due to missing Santorini, or if any other itinerary changes are made.

Sun Princess debuted in late February, and has already had several itinerary changes. In fact, the ship did not visit Santorini on her maiden voyage as planned, though that deviation was due to maintenance on the Santorini Cable Car rather than ship congestion.

The 175,500-gross-ton ship will remain sailing the Mediterranean through mid-September before making her first transatlantic crossing that will bring her to Fort Lauderdale, where she will homeport through March 2025 with a variety of Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

Alaska Port’s Plans for Passenger Fees Cause Debate

Have you ever wondered what cruise destinations do with the port fees they collect from the passengers who visit each year? In Juneau, Alaska, officials are limited to using the funds in ways that benefit both the ships and passengers – which some of Juneau’s plans may not do, according to Cruise Lines International Association Alaska.

CLIA Officials Object To Juneau’s Use Of Port Fees 

During the busy Alaska season, Juneau collects millions of dollars in passenger fees from cruisers annually – a number that is expected to add up to more than $20 million in 2024. 

Based on the terms of a 2019 settlement, which came after a three-year legal between the Juneau Assembly and Cruise Lines International Association Alaska (CLIA Alaska) over how the port spends money collected from cruisers, officials in Juneau are supposed to use those funds to better the city in a way that positively impacts the visiting ships, in addition to the passengers. 

“[F]ees for services that benefit a vessel (that facilitate marine operations) are constitutional, whereas those expenditures that do not benefit a vessel are unconstitutional,” reads the settlement. “The expenditure must also have a ‘nexus to the marine operations of a vessel.’ Benefit to passengers is not enough, the benefit must be to the vessel itself.” 

However, according to CLIA Alaska, some of Juneau’s plans for 2024’s port fees – nine to be exact – fall outside of what the settlement allows. In a letter sent to the city, CLIA Alaska officials said that those projects “do not meet the necessary criteria set forth by either the law or the Settlement Agreement.”

The plans at question include adding public Wi-Fi in Junea’s downtown area, increased bus service to the Mendenhall Valley, street cleaning and repairs, improved lighting for OverStreet Park and its Canoe Statue, and a revolving loan program, among others. These projects would take place in 2025 using the funds earned from cruise passengers in 2024. 

During a finance meeting held during the weekend of April 6, 2024, Juneau Tourism Manager Alix Pierce said she thinks the Assembly should move forward with funding the projects as planned, despite the objections, because the feedback from CLIA Alaska came too late.

Juneau officials and CLIA Alaska are supposed to meet annually to discuss plans for the port fees, and Pierce alleges these objections were not raised during the annual meeting. 

“CLIA’s aware of that timeline. And we had a meeting where we discussed the budget. And then, very late in the process, they came forward with this letter that does not follow the timeline of our process,” Pierce told KTOO, a local news station in Juneau. 

But while Pierce says too many plans have been made under the assumption that they would be approved, it’s not too late for the Juneau Assembly to consider CLIA Alaska’s objections and alter course. City Manager Katie Koester said that CLIA Alaska could potentially sue them again if they fund the projects as is, but that she was also not concerned about going back to court just yet. 

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from CLIA, Renee Reeve, said she’s “confident the organization and the city will come to a resolution” in an email to KTOO. 

As of the time of publication, the Juneau Assembly has not made the final determination on which projects will move forward, but the budget is expected to be finalized in the coming months. 

Juneau Gears Up For Busy Alaska Cruise Season

Of the Alaska ports, Juneau is one of the most popular. The state’s capital received a record-breaking 1.6 million cruise passengers in 2023, and is expecting to welcome an even greater 1.7 cruise guests in 2024 across 660 ship calls. 

In fact, the cruise traffic is so intense that Juneau is actually taking measures to limit the number of cruise ships that can visit the port. On the busiest days, Juneau welcomes more than 20,000 cruise passengers, more than half the size of the local population of approximately 31,685 residents. The tentative agreement, which will go into effect in 2026 if approved, would set a limit of five cruise ships in the port per day.

But with no agreement in place as of yet, Juneau is bracing for a busy cruise season. Each year, the popular Alaska destination receives visits from the major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Viking Oceans, and Seabourn.

This year, Norwegian Cruise Line kicked off the 2024 Alaska season with a 7-night voyage onboard Norwegian Bliss, which departed from the Port of Seattle on April 6, 2024. In addition to Juneau, the Breakaway Plus-class cruise ship will also call on Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan in Alaska and Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Seattle on April 13. 

Meanwhile, Princess Cruises is also about to begin a record-breaking Alaska Season, with nearly half of its 18 ships deployed in Alaska throughout summer 2024. The cruise line also began the year with an over 20% surge in Alaska bookings, the highest in Princess history for the month of January. 

Across seven ships, Princess will offer 14 different Alaska itineraries, including 158 departures and 81 scenic cruising opportunities through Glacier Bay National Park. Additionally, the cruise line unveiled two new cruisetours to add to its repertoire of packages that combine land and sea vacations.

Carnival to Sell Miami Headquarters in Hot Real Estate Market

Carnival Cruise Line will be relocating its Miami office space within the next two years as the company has engaged real estate services to list the existing property in a skyrocketing real estate market.

While the cruise line does not appear to be relocating outside of the Miami area, the downsizing in office space can be a smart financial step as office roles have changed since the company first started in the location more than 30 years ago.

Carnival to Sell Miami Headquarters

Carnival Corporation & plc is currently based in Doral, Florida, a city in the Miami metropolitan area just west of Miami International Airport and 12 miles (19 kilometers) from PortMiami, through the often congested downtown region. The cruise company will soon be moving, however, as the space is being listed with commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield Plc.

According to Bloomberg, the current headquarters of Carnival Corporation & plc has now been listed for sale as the company is seeking to downsize its overall office space.

The current space measures roughly 470,000 square feet, whereas a space of 300,000 square feet is being sought for the relocation. This reflects changes in office use in several ways, such as the greater use of digital meetings and virtual spaces in the post-pandemic area as well as more efficient staffing, streamlined equipment, and an online or remote workforce that requires less of a physical office footprint.

Carnival Cruise Line first moved into the Doral office space – located at 3655 NW 87th Avenue, Miami – in 1983, having paid $16.6 million (USD) for the real estate at that time.

While no listing is yet publicly active for the space, skyrocketing real estate values in the area could mean a significant profit to be made from a successful sale, which could help the company’s overall financial status and provide a boost for further investment.

New HQ Not Yet Purchased

At the same time, however, the company will need to search for new office space. There is no indication yet where that might be, though it would be logical to secure a space closer to the cruise terminals, if possible. There is no hint that the cruise line might relocate to a completely different area, such as moving closer to Port Canaveral or another busy cruise port.

The report also says that Carnival plans to remain at the same space in Doral for roughly the next two years, so there is time to both secure a new space that will meet evolving, updated needs as well as court a suitable buyer for the existing space at a good price.

It is possible that Carnival will look for a new space that could woo employees with upgraded features and amenities, encouraging greater office use at a time when remote work remains high.

Carnival Corporation & plc has more than 100,000 employees, and while the crews aboard its cruise ships on multiple lines – Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, etc. – make up the bulk of the company’s workforce, shoreside employees are also a valuable part of the team.

Shoreside positions include research and development, management, weather operations, interior design, data analysis, accounting, payroll, recruitment, software engineering, marketing, and much more, as well as teams at cruise homeports, staff for the cruise line’s private islands – including the upcoming Celebration Key – and other destinations.

Two New MSC Cruise Ships Reach Major Construction Milestones

MSC Cruises’ goals of growing its fleet are coming to fruition. The cruise line, along with the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France, are celebrating construction milestones for MSC’s new World-class ships: MSC World America and MSC World Asia. 

The milestones were commemorated during a special press conference at the Seatrade Cruise Global Conference in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. 

MSC World America Floats Out 

MSC World America, the second of MSC Cruises’ World-class ships, officially floated out at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The ceremony, which took place on April 7, is a huge construction milestone – as it’s the first time the 215,863-gross ton vessel has touched the water and no longer needs to be in a dry dock. 

“MSC World America is another example of the incredible professional partnership between us and the Chantiers de l’Atlantique with whom we have designed five distinct and innovative prototypes – the most recent being the ground-breaking World Class platform,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises. 

“With each and every ship we strive to improve and enhance not only the environmental technology but also new features that enrich the experience for the guest as we design for the future holiday experience,” added Vago. 

The future flagship of MSC’s World-Class fleet will now enter the final phase of construction, which will also be completed in France. The next big milestone for the ship will be the sea trials, where crew, shipyard officials, insurance company representatives, and other appropriate officials will supervise as the vessel completes various maneuvers at sea to be certified as sea-worthy. 

Also during the final phases of construction, workers will also put the finishing touches on the decorations and decor. MSC Cruises has already shared that the new mega-ship will be divided into seven unique districts, which include both family-friendly and adult-only spaces, and a comedy club, which is something no other MSC ship has.

MSC Cruises is targeting an April 2025 launch for the 6,762-passenger ship, giving workers about a year to complete work. The ship’s naming ceremony is scheduled for April 9, 2025, at MSC Cruises’ dedicated terminal at PortMiami, which is also the world’s largest cruise terminal.  

The naming ceremony will be followed by a short sailing to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line’s private island destination and nature sanctuary in the Bahamas. As of the time of publication, that sailing is not available for booking and it will likely only be open to VIPs, members of the press, and travel agents, as is common practice in the travel industry.

But rest assured, anyone who wants to sail on MSC World America will get the chance to when she begins offering 7-day cruises throughout the Caribbean from her Miami homeport at the end of April 2025. 

Constructions Officially Begins on MSC World Asia

MSC World Asia, which is meant to become the third World-Class ship when it’s delivered in 2026, is officially in the works at France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The ship has just had its steel-cutting ceremony, which is essentially the cruise ship equivalent of a groundbreaking ceremony on land and signals the start of production.

Up next will be the ship’s keel-laying ceremony, which is when the bottom of the ship is lowered into the dry dock. Typically, gold coins are also laid in the keel for good luck.

While not many details are known about MSC World Asia just yet, she is expected to be able to accommodate over 5,400 guests and be 215,863-gross tons. It’s also unknown where she will sail on her inaugural itineraries, but the cruise line has made it clear that the ship’s design and unique experiences will be influenced by the continent she’s named after.

MSC’s World-Class: Big And Green Cruise Ships

Once complete, MSC’s World-class fleet will be the second largest class of cruise ships in the world, after Royal Caribbean’s Icon-class. MSC World Europa, the first ship in the fleet, entered service in December of 2022. MSC World America and MSC World Asia will join the fleet in the next few years, before an unnamed fourth ship is expected to complete the set of four in 2027. 

Although each ship in the new World-Class will be unique in the way they pay homage to the continents they are named for, they will all share a signature plumb bow, 22 decks of fun, 420,000 square feet of public space, more than 2,600 cabins and suites, and MSC Cruises’ largest ever Yacht Clubs.

But not only are these some of the biggest ships sailing the high seas, they are also among the most environmentally friendly, too. MSC Cruises has been a pioneer in introducing sustainability within the cruise industry, and is well on its way to meeting the International Maritime Organization’s objective of a 40% carbon reduction by 2030. The cruise line is also committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. 

All of the World-class ships are powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), which offers immediate greenhouse gas emission reductions compared to more conventional fuel sources. The ships will also be ready to use renewable fuel sources like Bio and Synthetic LNG as soon as they become commercially available.

Additionally, the new ships will also be fitted with shore power connectivity, which allows their engines to be switched off while calling on ports that provide shore power. 

Currently, MSC World Europa and MSC World America deliver some of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry, according to the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). As technology continues to evolve rapidly, MSC Cruises plans to make MSC World Asia even more energy-efficient than its sister ships.

In a strategic push to expand Thailand’s footprint in the global tourism market, the government has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance Koh Samui’s appeal as a leading cruise destination. Central to the initiative is developing a state-of-the-art cruise terminal, part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and attract a larger international visitor base to the island and the Surat Thani Province.

Prime Minister Srethha Thavisin emphasized the initiative’s potential impact, stating, “Koh Samui is an island with great potential, having been ranked in the top 20 of the world’s most popular islands in every travel ranking.”

During a visit to the area, the Prime Minister said his visit “aims to address issues to help Koh Samui reach its full potential, setting KPIs with the Minister of Tourism and Sports that Koh Samui must enter the top 10 of the world’s most attractive islands.”

Prime Minister Thavisin also proposed introducing seaplanes to diversify travel options, directing the Minister of Transport to include this in the Cabinet meeting before the year’s end “as a New Year’s gift to the people of Koh Samui.” He also mentioned discussions with private airport owners about expansion to accommodate more tourists.

The Prime Minister plans to revisit Koh Samui later in the year to monitor progress. He mentioned that if the cruise terminal, marina, and seaplane terminal are established, leading to increased tourist arrivals, it would benefit the private sector to bid for Duty-Free operations.

Navigating New Horizons

The Tourism and Sports Ministry’s data claims that 1,800 to 2,400 tourists currently arrive in Thailand on cruise ships between the high season of October through March. The data finds cruise travelers spend 10 times more than traditional tourists.

The planned cruise terminal is envisioned to become a key gateway for international tourists, providing them with direct access to the island’s renowned beaches, cultural sites, and hospitality offerings. It will also continue the 10-year development plan launched in 2018 to enhance Thailand’s port facilities and prepare the nation for increased cruise ship arrivals.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island, nestled in the Gulf of Thailand. The island is dotted with tourist hotspots, such as Chaweng Beach, known for its vibrant nightlife, and the more serene Lamai Beach. Koh Samui is also home to landmarks like the famous 12-meter-tall golden Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai Temple.

The island’s port is currently welcoming Azamara Club Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Cruise Line, Viking Oceans, and AIDA Cruises. Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Insignia will arrive on the island on April 20 as the last big cruise line of the season. The 2024-25 season will resume in October, with Princess Cruise’s Coral Princess the first to arrive on October 19.

Currently, Thailand’s additional cruise calls include Laem Chabang (Bangkok), Thailand, scheduled as a call in 2024 by Viking Oceans, Regent Seven Seas Explorer, Aida, Silversea, Azamara Club Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line; and Phuket.

As the nation’s largest island, Phuket is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Located in the Andaman Sea off the southwestern coast, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas cruise lines are scheduled to visit in 2024.
