Norwegian Ship Makes Another Itinerary Change for Sustainability

Norwegian Cruise Line has made another itinerary change for Norwegian Getaway as part of the company’s commitment to sustainability. While this change is a simple one, removing just one hour from a port of call, it may signal a disturbing trend that could have stronger ramifications for cruise travelers.

Port of Call Shortened for Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian Getaway‘s January 20, 2023 sailing is a 12-night roundtrip Caribbean itinerary from New York City, but guests will now have one hour less to enjoy their first port of call. The ship is scheduled to visit San Juan, Puerto Rico on Monday, January 23, originally docked from 4-10:30 p.m.

The cruise line has reached out to booked guests to notify them that the Breakaway-class ship will now leave San Juan one hour earlier, at 9:30 p.m.

“As part of our global sustainability program, Sail & Sustain, we are continually seeking opportunities to reduce our overall carbon footprint, and recently committed to pursuing net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and value chain by 2050,” the email read. “To support this mission, we have optimized our arrival and departure times.”

By leaving port one hour earlier, the ship can maintain a slightly lower speed en route to its next port of call, St. Kitts. Lower speeds are more fuel efficient and result in lower emissions.

It should be noted that no other arrival or departure times during the cruise, which will visit six other Caribbean ports in addition to San Juan, have been adjusted at this time.

This change follows another recent change for the January 8, 2023 Norwegian Getaway sailing. For that earlier cruise, which uses the exact same language in the notification email, multiple changes were made, including shortening one port of call, extending another, and canceling a visit to Puerto Plata altogether. Both the January 8 and January 20 sailings were identical when originally listed.

Is Sustainability Really the Issue?

It is true that many cruise lines have made great strides toward sustainability and protecting the marine environment and habitats of ports they visit. Some of these initiatives have been implemented by governments in ports of call, while others have been part of a general trend toward greater sustainability worldwide.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Sail & Sustain program includes such measures as improved wastewater treatment, purifying ballast water to avoid introducing unwanted organisms into new ecosystems, improved recycling operations, and connecting to shoreside power where available to reduce in-port emissions.

Even small steps onboard can help with sustainability, such as eliminating single-use plastics, reducing laundry by encouraging towel reuse, and crafting innovative menus to reduce food waste, such as the new zero-waste cocktails at the Metropolitan Bar aboard Norwegian Prima.

But does trimming one hour off a port of call, in the interest of fuel efficiency, make that tremendous of a difference?

Yes, a slower speed can reduce cruise ship emissions. But… Why trim this specific port of call? Guests were scheduled for only 6.5 hours in San Juan (now 5.5 hours), yet the other ports of call on the itinerary are longer: 7 hours in St. Kitts, 9 hours in St. Lucia, 9 hours in Barbados, 9 hours in Antigua, 8 hours in St. Thomas, and 7 hours in Puerto Plata.

Worth Reading: Norwegian Getaway Cancels Two Calls Due to Port Availability

Some speculation hints that shortening a port of call will not only reduce emissions, but may also improve onboard revenue as guests can use that extra hour in the casino, retail shops, specialty restaurants, and at bars and lounges – all of which can help improve the cruise line’s bottom line.

It is also possible that the choice of which port to shorten may be based on other factors, such as what other ships are in port and how crowded the destination is on the planned day, adjustments that might be made to port fees for the cruise line if a ship is docked for a shorter time, or even just how overall popular or accessible a port may be.

With two consecutive Norwegian Getaway sailings being adjusted in dramatically different ways for the same reason, cruise travelers are likely to see more tweaks and adjustments to itineraries in the future as Norwegian Cruise Line – and likely other lines that will follow suit – continues to refine operations.

Another Cruise Line Switches to Starlink Internet 

American Cruise Lines announced the installation of new Starlink satellite internet on its fleet of riverboats and small cruise ships today, January 4, 2023. 

Starlink, powered by a constellation of low earth orbit satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, will provide a stable internet connection for the company’s continuously moving ships, ensuring seamless connectivity and faster upload speeds. 

The service was beta tested in 2022 and received positive feedback from guests. The new high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi will be complimentary on all 2023 cruises.

Complimentary Internet Onboard American Cruise Lines

Guests sailing onboard the riverboats and cruise ships operated by American Cruise Lines will enjoy complimentary internet onboard this year. The US-based cruise company announced this week it had installed Starlink internet connectivity onboard all vessels, which will be available to all guests at no extra charge. 

Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX that aims to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access to customers worldwide. One of the key markets for Starlink is maritime internet, with the company targeting cruise ships and other vessels that are often out of range of traditional internet connections.

Starlink’s satellite constellation is designed to provide reliable coverage in even the most remote and inaccessible areas, making it an ideal solution for cruise companies such as American Cruise Lines guests who need to stay connected while sailing. 

The cruise line operates cruises throughout the United States, from Alaska to Florida; from Napa Valley wine country to the historic Hudson River; and from the Mississippi to the stunning Columbia and Snake Rivers.

More Changes Coming to American Cruise Lines

Founded in 1991, American Cruise Lines is a leading provider of river cruising and small-ship coastal cruising in the United States. The company operates a fleet of paddleboats and small cruise ships, each accommodating 100-190 passengers.

In addition to the new satellite internet, American Cruise Lines has made several other improvements to its fleet. In 2022, the company renovated and redecorated its entire paddlewheel fleet and recently updated the interiors of its existing small cruise ships.

In 2023, the company will introduce three more new ships to its fleet, comprising 17 small ships and riverboats. American Cruise Lines’ small ship itineraries offer an all-inclusive experience, with over 400 shore excursions, complimentary entertainment, and wine and beer with both lunch and dinner. 

More and more cruise lines are beginning to make the switch to Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service. Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Hurtigruten, and SeaDream Yacht Club were among the first to make the switch to Starlink Maritime Internet last year. 

The system was also tested onboard the Norwegian Cruise Line cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway. Starlink provides a reliable and high-speed internet connection to cruise ships, which is essential for passengers who rely on the internet for communication and entertainment while on vacation. 

In the past, cruise ship internet has been notoriously slow and expensive, so the adoption of Starlink could be a game-changer for the industry while also opening up the market for additional revenue streams such as remote working.

Cruise Lines Disagree With Cuba Judgement from Florida Court

Both Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean have made it clear they will seek to appeal the decision from a Florida Judge to award the Havana Docks Corporation with four hundred and forty million dollars in damages. 

U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom in Miami ruled that the use of the Havana Cruise Port Terminal constitutes trafficking in confiscated property owned by the plaintiff. This Delaware-registered company is owned by two individuals said to be direct descendants of the original owners of the docks in Havana, Cuba. This decision follows her ruling in March on the same issue.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Corporation Will Appeal

Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean have announced plans to appeal a Florida Judge’s decision to award the Havana Docks Corporation $440 million in damages. 

Judge Beth Bloom in Miami ruled that the use of the Havana Cruise Port Terminal constituted trafficking in confiscated property belonging to the plaintiff, a Delaware-registered company owned by two individuals who claim to be direct descendants of the original owners of the docks in Havana, Cuba.

The court’s decision marks a significant victory for Cuban Americans seeking compensation for seizing their assets during the Cold War. The plaintiff was awarded a total of $109,671,180.90 in damages from Carnival Corporation and an additional $109,848,747.87 from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Royal Caribbean Group, and MSC Cruises. 

In a statement to Reuters, Royal Caribbean Group expressed its disagreement with the ruling. The company stated that it would be appealing the decision, as well as Carnival Corporation, which also “strongly disagreed” with the verdict and emphasized that it had engaged in “lawful travel.”

Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings declined to comment on the matter, while MSC Cruises did not respond to a request for comment.

What Did The Cruise Companies do Wrong?

The lawsuit, brought under the Helms-Burton Act, allows U.S. nationals to sue over the use of property seized in Cuba after 1959. Havana Docks accused the cruise companies of using a confiscated dock in Cuba and collecting over $1.2 billion in revenue from their cruises without paying anything to Havana Docks or the Cuban people.

Roberto Martinez, the attorney for Havana Docks, commented on the ruling, saying, “This is a very important ruling by Judge Bloom. The commercial use of confiscated property in Cuba in violation of U.S. law carries clearly detailed and well-known and publicized legal consequences.”

Under the rules and regulations that the Obama administration had set out, the cruise lines were allowed to engage in people-to-people activities but not tourism-related activities. 

In March, the cruise lines stated their actions were entirely legal in Cuba and sanctioned under licenses issued by US government organizations. However, Judge Bloom noted that cruise companies had simply interpreted the rules and regulations as they saw fit.

Micky Arison, Chairman at Carnival Corporation, knew already in 2019 that Carnival would be liable for damages, as he said in a letter sent to then-President Trump:

“President Trump, I wanted to follow up on our discussion regarding Cuba. The news is reporting that Title III of Helms-Burton, the Cuba lawsuit ban, will be fully lifted today. If there are no exceptions or clarifications, we would be subject to significant legal liability for our use Of the Ports.”

“We do not own the ports or even manage them, but because we use them, we could be deemed as “trafficking” in confiscated property, and the penalty to my company alone would be over $600 million.”

The statement from Micky Arison draws doubts on whether the penalties imposed by Judge Bloom will be withdrawn by any judge, seeing as the cruise companies knew full well they were in the wrong.

In celebration of Alaska’s Statehood Day – the state officially became the forty-ninth state of the United States on January 3, 1959 – Holland America Line has announced new, amazing itineraries for the 2024 sailing season.

Highlights include longer itineraries from various ships, with diverse ports of call and options for land-based extensions to truly give travelers a connection to this amazing destination.

“Holland America Line is proud of our rich history of bringing the best service at sea to Alaska, and we’re excited to reveal details of our 2024 season including a new monthlong Arctic Circle itinerary that is the most immersive we’ve ever offered in this region,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line.

“With six ships serving Alaska and the only cruise line with owned land operations in Denali and the Yukon, no one does Alaska better than Holland America Line.”

The 2024 Alaska season extends from late April through late September, and cruises are now open for booking. Full Cruisetours, which will include the oceangoing getaway as well as land expeditions to Denali and the Yukon, will be available for booking in February 2023.

Special highlights of the 2024 itineraries include a wide range of 7-night cruises, including both northbound and southbound cruises between Whittier (Anchorage) and Vancouver. Guests who prefer a roundtrip sailing from a single homeport can choose options either from Vancouver or Seattle.

Natural scenery is the highlight of any Alaska cruise, and every Holland America Line itinerary includes a visit to one or more of Alaska’s iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park, College Fjord, Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier, or Tracy Arm.

Depending on the ship, itinerary, and sailing date, guests will also visit iconic Alaskan ports of call such as Anchorage, Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Valdez, Sitka, Wrangell, and more.

Sister ship to Westerdam, also in the Vista class, Noordam will also be sailing 2024 Alaska itineraries, as well as the Pinnacle-class Koningsdam, one of the largest vessels in Holland America Line’s fleet.

Virgin Cruise Ship Rescues 18 Cuban Refugees from Sinking Boat

Another rescue at sea happened during the holiday season, when the crew aboard Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady plucked 18 refugees from a makeshift boat in the Caribbean on New Year’s Eve. It was the fourth cruise ship rescue of migrants in the region within a week.

Boat Sighted Between Key West, Cuba

The group of 18 Cuban refugees, including men, women, and children, encountered Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady between Key West and Cuba on December 31, 2002, while the ship was sailing its 6-night New Years’ Ahoy Cruise from Miami. Scarlet Lady had departed Costa Maya and was headed to Bimini.

According to reports, the refugee boat was spotted around 5:30 PM, and a crew member swam to the boat with a rope while its inhabitants were bailing water from the vessel and yelling for help. The group was taken on board, in accordance with maritime law that requires cruise ships to assist anyone in distress at sea.

Involved in the rescue was Scarlet Lady captain Giovanni Schiaffino, who posted a photo of the rescue on Instagram and wrote: “I will never forget this photo, because in this image there are fear, hope, charity, desperation, strength, love, fraternity, honor, desire, dreams, emotion, altruism, solidarity.”

Schiaffino continued, “and if you pay attention in that arm outstretched by our crew member, ..you may notice 1094 outstretched arms and outstretched hands from all my amazing Scarlet crew members, and I’m sure from all of us at VV. Thanks again for what we all did together.

The ship changed course and began heading to Key West. A US Coast Guard vessel arrived at about 9 PM and transferred the refugees onboard. Guests watching the transfer said refugees had been given spa robes and Virgin Voyages uniforms to wear.

Scarlet Lady then continued her New Year cruise with a port call in Bimini before returning to Miami on January 2, 2023. The 2,770-guest ship departed on her next cruise as scheduled, a four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailing to Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Cruise Ship Rescues No Longer Uncommon

It wasn’t the first time that a Virgin cruise ship had come upon Cuban refugees. On September 14, 2022, Scarlet Lady’s crew rescued eight people found on a makeshift raft north of Cuba. Its occupants were taken onboard, and proper authorities were alerted.

There were other end-of-year rescues in the same area. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunrise picked up several refugees from a small boat off the Cuba coast on December 30, 2022, while the ship was headed back to its homeport in Miami.

Three days later, Carnival Celebration rescued five refugees on a makeshift raft off the coast of Havana, Cuba. The ship was on her way back to Miami, too. And on January 2, 2023, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Beyond rescued 19 Cuban migrants in the Florida straights as the ship was returning to its homeport in Fort Lauderdale.

Celebrity Flagship Rescues Refugees from Styrofoam Boat

The Celebrity Beyond cruise ship has come to the rescue of 19 refugees that were stranded on a makeshift boat made out of styrofoam and wood. This rescue operation is the third by a cruise ship in the Caribbean in just a single day and marks a busy start to the year with refugees trying to get from Cuba to South Florida.

Celebrity Cruises has become the second cruise line involved in rescuing refugees in the Caribbean in 2023 so far, with its flagship, Celebrity Beyond. The large cruise ship spotted the small boat in the Florida straights on January 2.

The small makeshift boat was made of styrofoam and wood and packed with 19 refugees trying to get from Cuba to Florida.

Captained by Kate McCue, the crew safely brought the refugees aboard, with the captain bringing the large vessel alongside. As a procedure, they were checked by the ship’s medical personnel and likely provided food and water. According to passengers onboard, the Celebrity cruise ship waited for the US Coast Guard to pick them up.

McCue later posted on social media, “Thank you to all the crew who made this rescue possible. Chief Officer Nikos, you will always be my eagle eyes!”

At the time, Celebrity Beyond was sailing its final day at sea as part of an eight-night Western Caribbean voyage, which departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 26, 2022. The voyage included calls at Nassau, Bahamas; George Town, Cayman Islands; Ratan, Honduras; Costa Maya, Mexico; and the final port of call at Cozumel, Mexico.

The ship is scheduled to arrive home on Tuesday morning, and Celebrity Cruises has not announced any delayed arrival due to the rescue operation. The following sailing is scheduled to depart on Tuesday afternoon on a shorter five-night Caribbean itinerary, including vitis to Cozumel and Costa Maya, both in Mexico.

Busy Start of Cruise Ship Rescues in 2023

The cruise industry has been busy in the first few days of 2023 as Celebrity Beyond becomes the third cruise ship to rescue refugees since the new year. The ship also becomes the fourth since December 30, 2022.

Carnival Sunrise made a rescue on its final sea day while heading back to Miami in, Florida, on December 30. The Carnival vessel safely brought several refugees onboard. The Carnival Dream also rescued 20 refugees on January 2, which the US Coast Guard picked up.

Carnival Cruise Line’s new flagship, Carnival Celebration, also spotted refugees on January 2. The ship picked up 19 people on a small boat off the coast of Cuba. At the time, the vessel was on its final sea day, heading back to PortMiami.

It’s maritime law for a cruise ship to help anyone distressed at sea. In these cases, the relevant authorities will always be contacted. The US Coast Guard will often meet the cruise ship and pick up the refugees. The refugees will likely be returned to Cuba in the coming days and weeks.

Who Owns Royal Caribbean – All You Need to Know

Formerly called Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Royal Caribbean Group operates globally and was incorporated in Liberia while based in Miami, Florida. After Carnival Cruise Line, it is the second largest cruise line.

As of January 2021, it owns three cruise lines: Royal Caribbean International, Silversea Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises. They also have a 50% stake in TUI cruises, CDF Croisières de France, and Pullmantur Cruises. So, who owns Royal Caribbean?

The History

This group was originally called Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Things changed in 1997 when it bought Celebrity Cruises. In 2000, Island Cruises formed as a joint venture between Royal Caribbean and First Choice Holidays. It became a type of informal line for the Brazilian and British markets. 

Another acquisition occurred in 2006 with the purchase of Pullmantur Cruises in Spain. Following this purchase, Royal Caribbean experienced a rapid expansion by creating Azamara Cruises. Azamara Cruises became a subsidiary of its Celebrity Cruises branch in 2007. May 2008 saw the company form CDF Croisieres de France to reach the French-speaking markets.

In 2009, they expanded into the German market by acquiring shares in TUI Cruises. The subsidiary of TUI Cruise, TUI Travel, contained 50% interest in Island Cruises after merging with First Choice Holidays. Holdings were rationalized by selling TUI Island Cruises. 

A joint venture was announced in 2019 with ITM Group, which led to the formation of Holistica to develop cruise destinations. The only area they want to establish is Grand Lucayan Resort in Freeport. The hotel campus had been sold to a subsidiary of the Bahamian Government.

Royal Caribbean Cruises bought the remaining Silversea Cruises shares in 2020. They changed the logo and renamed themselves Royal Caribbean Group. They later sold Azamara Cruises to Sycamore Partners for $201 million

Just recently, in 2022, they obtained court approval to buy Endeavor, a former ship for Crystal Cruise, for $275 million. It will later be renamed Silver Endeavor when it joins the Silversea Cruise fleet.

Who Owns Royal Caribbean?

Royal Caribbean International and its numerous subsidiaries fall under the Royal Caribbean Group banner. They have a fleet of 64 cruise ships and travel to 1,000 destinations around the world.

Capital Research & Management owns the most shares in Royal Caribbean. Capital is a large investment group formed in 1931 with $2.6 trillion in assets in its portfolio. Currently, they own 16% of the cruise company.

Even this 16% ownership is split between several branches within the group—Capital Research & Management Company’s international investors have an 11.66% stake. The remaining top ten of their shareholders are large investment groups like JPMorgan, The Vanguard Group, and several others.

Royal Caribbean International was founded in 1968 in Norway by three shipping companies. These founding companies were IM Skaugen & Company, Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, and Gotaas Larsen. Song of Norway was their first ship, which launched two years later. Nordic Prince was added one year later, and Sun Viking followed in 1972.

In 1978, Song of Norway was the first cruise ship to be lengthened by adding an 85-foot section to a severed center of the ship. If you make an investment and purchase 100 shares, you receive shareholder benefits when you cruise on one of their Royal Caribbean ships. This also applies to Celebrity Cruises, except for cruises to the Galapagos Islands.

Shareholder benefits include:

  • $250 onboard credit per stateroom for cruises lasting 14 nights or longer
  • $100 onboard credit per stateroom for cruises lasting 6-13 nights
  • $50 onboard credit per stateroom for cruises lasting five nights or less

To claim these benefits, stakeholders should apply through the Royal Caribbean website. You will need to provide proof of your shares. 

How Are Shares Purchased?

Shares are purchased using a stockbroker. They may be a licensed stockbroker or smartphone/laptop platforms. You will need to find a platform that deals with the NYSE and make a request to purchase RCL stock.

Stockbrokers tend to cost more; however, they will offer you advice. This is usually better for those who need help deciding what to invest in. However, if you understand the risks, going through the online stockbroker platform tends to be cheaper.

New Carnival Cruise Ship Rescues Small Raft in the Caribbean

The new Carnival Celebration cruise ship, which only recently started guest operations at the end of 2022, has made its first rescue. The vessel spotted a small raft with refugees while heading back to Florida to end a week-long Caribbean cruise.

This rescue comes just days after another Carnival cruise ship also rescued refugees stranded on a small boat in the Caribbean.

Carnival Celebration Rescue

Just days after the Carnival Sunrise rescued refugees, the newest flagship, the Carnival Celebration, has also done the same. The giant LNG-powered vessel spotted a small makeshift raft with five refugees onboard that was off the coast of Havana in Cuba during the last sea day of the voyage. The refugees appeared to be on a small makeshift raft using oars.

At the time, the cruise ship was heading back toward its homeport of PortMiami in Florida. The refugees were taken onboard the large vessel and provided food and water. The ship’s medical team would have undoubtedly checked them over too.

In accordance with maritime law, any cruise ship must help anyone in distress at sea. Even though the refugees were brought onboard, they were handed over to the US Coast Guard not long after. The US Coast Guard met the Carnival cruise ship to take the refugees. The refugees will likely be returned to Cuba in the coming days and weeks.

The Carnival Celebration was coming to the end of a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage that departed Miami on December 27, 2022. The Carnival ship is scheduled to arrive back in Florida on January 3, 2023, at approximately 8:00 AM. It’s not known if the ship’s arrival back home will be delayed due to the rescue.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary included a call at Cozumel in Mexico on December 29, Costa Maya on December 30, and then Mahogany Bay in Roatan, Honduras, for the final day of the year.

The following voyage will depart on January 3, a shorter five-night sailing, including calls to Amber Cover in the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos.

This marks the first rescue operation for the newest ship in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Carnival Celebration recently joined the fleet and celebrated its naming ceremony at PortMiami in November 2022. The vessel is 183,521 gross tons, with a passenger capacity of 5,374 at double occupancy.

Second Carnival Rescue in a Few Days

This now makes the second Carnival cruise ship rescue in three days after the Carnival Sunrise spotted refugees needing help on December 30, 2022. It was similar to the Carnival Celebration, with Carnival Sunrise picking up several refugees from a small boat. This also took place just off the coast of Cuba while heading back to its homeport in Miami.

There was also a Carnival rescue in September 2022, when the Carnival Horizon came to the rescue of a drifting boat of refugees off the coast of Cuba. However, in October 2022, there was a situation where the refugees refused assistance from the Carnival cruise ship and were happy to continue on their journey.

As we begin 2023, further cruise ships in the Caribbean will undoubtedly come across small boats or rafts that need help. The majority come from Cuba, with people trying to head to South Florida in the US for a better quality of life.

Cruise Ships Delayed Arriving Back at Florida Port

The Brilliance of the Seas, a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, experienced a delay in its arrival to Port Tampa Bay today, January 2, 2023. In a statement to guests, the company explained that the delay was due to dense fog in the area.

Despite the inconvenience, Royal Caribbean assured guests that they were working to debark passengers as soon as possible and extended the use of their staterooms until the ship’s arrival.

In the meantime, breakfast has been expanded to include brunch in the Windjammer and Dining Room. Two other cruise ships are also delayed, including the Norwegian Dawn and Celebrity Constellation.

Brilliance of the Seas Delayed

Brilliance of the Seas, which is due to conclude a 4-day Western Caribbean cruise to Cozumel today, is just one of three cruise ships that will be arriving late to Port Tampa Bay. Royal Caribbean informed guests earlier today that the vessel will need to navigate through some dense fog, severely restricting the speed at which the cruise ship can operate.

A passenger who is currently onboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship said, “We are currently in an anchorage area north of the channel into Tampa Bay. Once we have clearance from the USGS, it will take 3.5 hours to reach the dock, then we need to clear customs. All guests have been given 60 minutes of free internet access to contact airlines/family/etc. Crew is great, they are putting on extra activities.”

The heavy fog has been causing problems around Northern Florida, mainly on the Eastern side of the state, but also around the Gulf of Mexico. Visibility in many areas has been severely restricted, with the National Weather Service issuing a hazardous weather alert for Monday morning.

The letter guests received states the following: “We have some important news to share with you. Due to some dense fog, our arrival in Tampa has been delayed. We’re hopeful we can begin debarkation as soon as possible today. We’ll update you shortly, as the weather is constantly changing.”

Guests do not need to worry about leaving their cabins long before arriving in port; the vessel has extended access to staterooms until just before arrival and will be serving breakfast/brunch in the Windjammer Cafe and the Dining Room:

“In the meantime, breakfast leading into brunch will be served in the Windjammer and Dining Room until shortly before arrival. We’ve also extended your stateroom until shortly before arrival,” the letter stated.

Brilliance of the Seas will operate from Tampa for a few more months, sailing a series of four and five-night cruises to the Western Caribbean. 

Brilliance of the Seas was built in 2002 and is part of the Radiance class of ships, which also includes the Serenade of the Seas and the Radiance of the Seas. The Brilliance of the Seas is 90,090 gross tons and can carry up to 2,501 passengers. 

More Cruise Ships Impacted

It’s worth noting that fog can be a serious safety concern for ships, as it can reduce visibility and make navigation more difficult. It’s not uncommon for ships to experience delays or diversions due to fog.

Carnival Dream Dense Fog

According to the Cruise Ship Tracker, there are two other cruise ships also at anchorage, waiting for the weather conditions to improve. Norwegian Dawn is ending an 11-night Caribbean Christmas and New Year’s itinerary, and the Celebrity Constellation is ending a 10-night holiday sailing in the Caribbean.

Whether or not the delayed arrival into Port Tampa Bay will affect the following cruise for Brilliance of the Seas is not known at this time. As long as the vessel arrives in port in the morning hours, embarkation for the five-night Western Caribbean cruise should be on time. The ship will be sailing to Grand Cayman and Cozumel.
