Royal Caribbean Ship Impacted by Sudden Storm in Gulf of Mexico

Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas recently encountered a severe squall in the Gulf of Mexico while finishing her most recent sailing.

The storm’s intensity created onboard flooding, furniture damage, glass breakage, and other impacts, but fortunately, no severe injuries were reported and the ship returned to Galveston as scheduled.

Voyager of the Seas Encounters Storm

Guests aboard Voyager of the Seas experienced some tense moments on the afternoon of Friday, January 26, 2024 as the ship was returning to Galveston, Texas at the end of a 5-night Western Caribbean cruise that had visited Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the ship encountered a strong squall line with fierce winds, tall waves, and heavy rainfall, as well as intermittent hail.

The vessel was listed noticeably, and furniture on the open decks was tossed about, while indoor lounges had broken glassware and other damage. Displays tipped over in retail stores, and in the ship’s casino, slot machines tipped and fell.

Guests onboard reported that some individuals were injured by slot machines falling, but no severe injuries have been reported.

Videos and photos shared to different social media sites also show flooding in both public areas and guest staterooms, as well as passengers milling about in general confusion as the situation evolved.

Crew members reacted quickly to clean up, including putting towels down to soak up water in flooded areas and to ensure flooring was safe for guests. Security was stationed around the ship to reassure guests and offer guidance as needed.

As is standard procedure, the open decks were closed during the storm and for a period of time afterward while safety checks were performed and the area was cleaned up.

Overall, the storm and the resulting cleanup lasted 3-4 hours. Despite the difficult seas, the ship was able to return to Galveston as planned, and departed on her next sailing – another 5-night Western Caribbean sailing – without problems.

The storm was likely the same squall line that Carnival Dream also passed through when guests and crew members were advised to stay in their cabins.

It is unknown whether guests onboard Voyager of the Seas were similarly asked to return to their staterooms during the roughest weather. Both ships have similar sizes and similar guest capacities.

The 138,194-gross-ton Voyager of the Seas can welcome 3,602 guests onboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,000 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are 1,200 international officers and crew members.

Cruise Ships and Sudden Storms

While cruise ships do attempt to steer clear of bad weather, it is not always possible to completely avoid lengthy squall lines or large storm systems. This is particularly true in the case of Voyager of the Seas and Carnival Dream, both of which were heading back to Galveston at the time of the severe weather.

Because the ships were heading back to their homeport, they were not able to adjust their route as significantly as if the incidents happened mid-cruise, when a port of call could be rescheduled or cancelled.

Even in the midst of bad weather, however, cruise ships can change their orientation, adjust speed, deploy stabilizers, and take other steps to ensure guests’ safety and comfort as much as possible until the severe weather passes.

Onboard activities are often adjusted as well to be sure crew members and entertainment performers are safe, and outer decks may be closed when winds are high.

Similarly, guests may be advised to stay off their private balconies or verandahs during bad weather, especially as these areas can be prone to flooding when waves are high or rainfall is intense.

Carnival Cruise Line Notifies Guests of Specific Policy

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has posted details of the cruise line’s mobility scooter policy and the size limitations for mobility devices onboard, urging guests to be aware of the requirements to avoid the possibility of being denied boarding if a scooter is oversized.

With increasing numbers of guests using such scooters, safety procedures must be followed to be sure hallways are not blocked and everyone can move through their staterooms safely.

Safety Guidelines for Mobility Scooters

In recent years as older travelers enjoy more adventures on the high seas, mobility scooters have become commonplace on cruise ships. Larger, more elaborate scooters, however, can have difficulty navigating narrow hallways and do not always fit within the occasionally tight confines of cruise ship cabins.

Carnival Cruise Line has urged guests to abide by the size guidelines for mobility scooters, highlighting the possible consequences of oversized gear.

“I know that for most people who use mobility scooters there are many challenges that they face in every day life, and there are a few on board as well with elevators being probably the biggest of those,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador. “I do though need to share this with everyone who does use a mobility scooter as we respectfully need to make sure that this rule is followed.”

The cruise line’s policy addresses the size of scooters compared to different staterooms, including how Carnival officials may address the issue of scooters at cruise check-in.

“In order to purchase a standard stateroom, mobility devices must be able to fit through its 22″ (55.9 cm) wide entry doorway, and must fold and collapse so when stored, allows for safe exit from the stateroom,” the policy explains.

“Guests who bring scooters that are larger than 21″ (53.34 cm) wide, or travel with multiple scooters in the same stateroom, must purchase a fully accessible stateroom with a wider doorway (32”, 81.3 cm), or rent a smaller scooter appropriately suited for their stateroom.”

Accessible staterooms generally have more generous floorspace as well as fewer barriers between the stateroom door, bathroom door, and the overall space in the room. These staterooms also often have automatic door entries, as well as additional emergency alert systems in the room in case of falls or other emergencies.

To ensure that guests with mobility scooters are in compliance with the equipment’s size restrictions, scooters that appear overly large may be measured when guests check-in at the cruise terminal to ensure the equipment will fit safely in the stateroom.

“Scooters that do not fit in the stateroom will not be allowed on board,” the policy states. “Should a guest be unable to make alternate arrangements to rent a smaller scooter or travel without it, he/she will be denied boarding and no compensation will be provided.”

Scooter rentals must usually be arranged in advance of sailing and may not be able to be processed on embarkation day if travelers have not made reservations for the equipment. Which rental companies that are available as well as what types of scooters they may have will vary for different embarkation ports.

“Please make sure that this is followed, I would really be very sad if someone arrives at embarkation with one of those extra large mobility scooters and was denied boarding,” Heald said.

Is the Policy Enforced?

Frequent Carnival cruisers are well aware that mobility scooters are often left outside staterooms, parked in hallways. This is not in accordance with the cruise line’s policy, and raises concerns that the policy is not sufficiently enforced onboard.

It can be a difficult situation for crew members to confront passengers who may be in violation of the policy. In some cases, travelers may be unaware of the rule that scooters cannot be parked in the hallways, while others may simply but taking advantage of laxness for greater convenience.

While all 27 ships in the Carnival fleet do have accessible staterooms onboard, the number and location of such cabins is limited and they can fill up quickly, especially on popular sailings or longer Carnival Journeys cruises.

Heald spreading word of the policy may be an indication that the cruise line will shortly begin enforcing the rules more strictly. All guests who use mobility devices – not just scooters, but also wheelchairs or walkers – should be aware of the policy and able to comply with the device size restrictions at all times.

Holland America Line Details New Itineraries, Including Iconic Sites

Holland America Line will deploy Noordam to the South Pacific for a series of cruises between Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, during the 2025-26 fall and winter season.

Bookings are officially open for sale, and include a set of new Collectors’ Voyages, offering longer, more immersive cruises of up to 50 days.

Noordam to Head Down Under in November 2025

An exciting cruise season Down Under is on the horizon for Holland America Line’s 1,924-guest Noordam starting in November 2025 and continuing to March 2026. The premium cruise line, a Carnival Corporation brand, designed a set of itineraries that will bring cruisers to the cosmopolitan cities of Australia and New Zealand as well as to remote areas where culture and wildlife will take the spotlight.

Several Collectors’ Voyages are sure to attract guests who wish to spend more time exploring the region. These cruises either combine two 14-day sailings, or add a Legendary Voyage onto a 14-day itinerary.

Australia and New Zealand are excellent options for cruisers looking for global destinations, iconic cities and wild wonders, said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer at Holland America Line.

We craft our cruises to showcase the best of each region. With these voyages, guests can immerse themselves in New Zealand in a port-intensive itinerary that also features scenic cruising through Milford Sound, or they can see wildlife like penguins and kangaroos while exploring South Australia,Bodensteiner added.

Noordam’s 14-day sailings are either roundtrip from Sydney or operate between Sydney and Auckland. The ship’s “Australia and New Zealand” itinerary, for instance, offers departures from both cities in November 2025 and in February and March 2026.

The sailings feature a mix of port calls in Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania, such as Melbourne, Australia, Hobart, Tasmania, and Port Chalmers, New Zealand.

Guests looking for a cruise focused on New Zealand can choose “New Zealand Discovery,” which operates roundtrip from Sydney on December 7, 2025, and calls at only New Zealand ports, including Auckland, Waitangi, Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton (Christchurch) and Port Chalmers.

Holland America Line’s new Collectors’ Voyages can combine back-to-back 14-day cruises for a 28-day journey, or add a 14-day itinerary onto an existing Legendary Voyage, which is a cruise category that offers longer, itineraries, more port calls, and special programming that focuses on the history and culture of the destinations.

For example, the 42-day “South Pacific Islands & New Zealand” Collectors’ Voyage, which sails roundtrip from Sydney on January 4, 2026 is the result of a 14-day sailing merged with the line’s 28-day “Islands of the South Pacific: Sydney to Auckland” Legendary Voyage.

Vista-Class Noordam Offers Fresh Fish Program

Noordam guests will benefit from Holland America’s Global Fresh Fish Program, which enables the line’s chefs to source fresh fish from a network of 60 global ports. Under the plan, which was introduced in September 2023 and is rolling out fleet wide in 2024, fresh fish goes from port to plate within 48 hours.

On the Australia-New Zealand cruise series, the fish program means guests can indulge in local specialties such as New Zealand green-lipped muscles, Tasmanian Atlantic salmon, and Sydney rock oysters, among other delectable.

Five dining venues on Noordam include the main dining room; the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse; Canaletto, offering Italian dishes; the Lido Market buffet; and Dive In, a poolside grill. The Explorations Cafe serves coffees and snacks, and cocktails.

Entertainment spaces onboard Noordam include the line’s popular Rolling Stone Lounge, featuring live music, and World Stage, the ship’s main theater, where a variety of stage productions and cabaret performances are held.

Noordam is a Vista-class ship that launched in 2005. The ship offers five stateroom categories: inside, ocean view, veranda, Signature Suite, and Neptune Suite.

Carnival Responds to Concerns Over Port Travel Advisory

Carnival Cruise Line has responded to guest concerns over the updated travel advisory citing increased crime in Nassau, clarifying their security policies and recommendations for guests debarking in ports of call where any official warnings may be present. At this time, there are no cruise lines canceling visits to Nassau due to the increased warning, but travelers should still take appropriate precautions.

Carnival Cruise Line Continues Visits to Nassau Despite Advisory

With the update to the Level 2 Travel Advisory to Nassau, The Bahamas – an “Exercise Increased Caution” alert – Carnival Cruise Line has responded to guest concerns about the safety of the destination.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has fielded questions on the safety of visiting Nassau on his popular Facebook page, where he answers hundreds of questions each day and shares tips, announcements, and updates with more than 565,000 followers.

“How bad of a violence warning results in Carnival changing ports?” a guest recently asked. “Usually, when we receive a warning bad weather is coming to our area, bad weather comes. Are cruise ships waiting for a tourist to be injured, assaulted, or worse at a destination with a warning before they change ports?”

Heald responded the the inquiry within minutes, first noting that all cruise lines are continuing to visit Nassau at this time, with no lines adjusting itineraries based on the travel advisory. He then shared the cruise line’s official response to the elevated travel advisory.

“We are aware of the advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Nassau. As part of our regular safety and security procedures, we are routinely monitoring the local destinations our ships visit, relying on government and law enforcement expertise,” the statement read.

“We continue to consult with embassy officials and our security team has determined we can continue with our planned visits to Nassau, which has enhanced policing of tourist areas. The safety of our guests and crew is our priority, and when any adjustments to itineraries are deemed necessary, we will react quickly.”

The travel advisory for Nassau, which was updated on Friday, January 26, 2024, lists crime as a key concern for travelers, with incidents such as burglaries and sexual assaults occurring in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Also noted of concern were water-based recreational activities and tours, which aren’t always regulated as strictly as US precautions might require.

These warnings follow a ferry boat accident in November 2023 that resulted in an elderly cruise passenger’s death, as well as a shark bite incident during a tour in mid-January. While the shark incident was not related to cruise tours, it nevertheless raises concerns for all visitors.

Heald notes that the latest safety information and port visitation guidance is always made available to guests onboard via announcements and the FunTimes newsletter (also available through the Carnival Hub app).

“As you would do when visiting any destination, please be aware of your surroundings and follow the instructions of local officials when you go ashore,” Carnival Cruise Line urged. “Regarding Nassau, please stay within the main areas. While guests may go ashore to independently sightsee, we encourage them to consider one of our shore excursions.”

All travelers – whether from cruise ships, resorts, or independent arrangements – should always be aware of travel advisories and take steps to protect themselves, such as not traveling with valuables, staying in safer areas, and remaining with a companion at all times.

Other Cruise Destinations and Travel Advisories

It should be noted that the US Department of State regularly issues travel advisories for many different countries based on reported crime statistics and other safety information, such as the availability of medical care and police response to incidents.

At this time, travel alerts at the same Level 2 advisory are also in effect for other cruise destinations, including the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, the UK, Belize, and Costa Rica. When an alert is issued, however, it is a general warning and may not impact travel to the entire country, but only to certain high-risk regions that may be far from cruise ports or popular tourist areas.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas Makes Giant Port of Call

The maiden voyage for Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas will be full of many monumental firsts, and the giant vessel just surpassed a milestone almost as big as the ship: making her first official port call. While Icon of the Seas had visited other ports before as she prepared to enter service, this is the first time she arrived at a port with paying passengers onboard.

The island of St. Kitts, a popular destination in the Caribbean, celebrated the arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship with messages of joy at a special ceremony commemorating the occasion.

Icon of the Seas debuts in St. Kitts

Of all the cruise ports in the world that Royal Caribbean’s newest ship could sail to on the first official voyage, the cruise line selected the island of St. Kitt’s and Nevis.

Icon of the Seas, which is making waves as the world’s largest cruise ship at 1,198 feet from bow to stern and weighing in at 250,800 gross tons, embarked on her maiden voyage on January 27, 2024, from Miami.

As an exciting milestone in her inaugural sailing, Icon of the Seas made her first port call with paying passengers onboard at St. Kitt’s on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, after a day at sea.

The new ship docked at Port Zante in Basseterre early in the morning, which is the historic capital city of St. Kitts.

The Eastern Caribbean destination saw the arrival of the 7,600 passenger ship as an honor and a landmark achievement to be celebrated, with Icon of the Seas’ arrival spelling good news for the local economy and tourism sector.

With the Caribbean island expecting a larger than usual cruise tourism season for early 2024, the arrival of the world’s largest ship further ingrains the idea that a new chapter is beginning for the nation’s thriving tourism industry.

“Our economy becomes the fortunate recipient of great opportunities, as the arrival of the largest cruise vessel in the world anchors our nation firmly on the global map of commerce. It ushers in new possibilities for economic investments and employment, important aspects of economic development,” said the Honorable Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The prime minister’s remark was made during a special ceremony to present Icon of the Seas with her inaugural cruise call plaque, during which he acknowledged the significance of the ship’s arrival and highlighted the commitment to sustainable tourism that is shared between the government and Royal Caribbean.

“We have dedicated our efforts to creating an environment that effortlessly blends the preservation of our natural heritage with sustainable tourism practices. This is an important tenet of this government’s agenda to ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis becomes a sustainable island state. This agenda correlates perfectly with Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to sustainability, or as they call it ‘Sea-stanability.’,” added Drew.

Where Will Icon of the Seas sail next?

St. Kitt’s was only the first port call on Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage. The inaugural 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise will also sail to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island, before returning to Miami on February 2, 2024.

At least for the foreseeable future, the first of the Icon-class ships will homeport in Miami Cruise Port. For the rest of the year and well into 2025, Icon of the Seas will be alternating between 7-night Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean sailings, with the ship scheduled to return to St. Kitt’s several times.

Tourism officials at St. Kitt’s highlighted a shared vision between Royal Caribbean and the cruise port to continue to cultivate a lasting relationship, and cheered the prospect of Icon of the Seas returning to St. Kitts on several more occasions in the future.

“It is an absolute delight to have this magnificent vessel docked in our port today, and the prospect of it making regular visits to St. Kitts and Nevis is truly exciting for us,” said Ellison “Tommy” Thompson, CEO of St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

Authorities within St. Kitts’ travel sector have been working hard to promote growth in cruise tourism, making an effort to improve tourism infrastructure and services. The island nation experienced an increase of 270,097 cruise passengers visiting the island in 2023 compared to the previous year – growth which the ongoing relationship with Royal Caribbean will continue to help support.

Cunard Ship Makes Unscheduled Maiden Port of Call

Port Lincoln, a small cruise port in South Australia, rolled out a royal welcome for Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on January 28, 2024, after the ship made an unscheduled call when bad weather altered her planned course.

Local dignitaries were on hand to receive the ship’s guests and crew to Port Lincoln, known as the seafood capital of Australia.

Storm Prompts Queen Elizabeth to Alter Course

Dark clouds revealed a silver lining for Port Lincoln, South Australia, on January 28, 2024, when a tropical cyclone prompted Cunard to alter the itinerary of Queen Elizabeth and send her southward rather than north to her originally planned port calls in Queensland.

The ship’s call to Port Lincoln was her first-ever visit to the destination, and city Mayor Diana Mislay and Chief Executive Officer Eric Brown boarded the ship and presented a welcome plaque to the ship’s captain.

To welcome such a prestigious cruise ship to our shores is an extraordinary honour and is evidence of the exceptional welcome program we offer, and the breadth of activities passengers can enjoy whilst in our region. I know our cruise volunteers will provide the outstanding level of warmth and service that they have become renowned for, said Diana Misloy, mayor of Port Lincoln.

The 2,081-guest ship departed on her 10-day voyage roundtrip from Sydney on January 22, 2024. Her original itinerary included calls at Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, and Willis Island, but a tropical cyclone forced the ship to change direction and head south toward South Australia.

Queen Elizabeth’s altered routing took her to Eden on January 23; to Melbourne for an overnight call on January 24; to Adelaide on January 27; and Port Lincoln on January 28. She is due to conclude the voyage in Sydney on January 31.

Queen Elizabeth is operating a series of 12- to 14-night  New Zealand and South Pacific cruises from Sydney and Melbourne through March 5, 2024. Following a 21-night voyage from Melbourne to Tokyo on March 7, 2024, the ship will offer a series of 9- to 19-day sailings around Japan.

After that, Queen Elizabeth repositions to Vancouver, British Columbia, and in June begins a collection of Alaska voyages. The 9- to 11-night cruises offer add-on tours featuring the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train. The ship also is scheduled to return to Alaska for the 2025 season.

Small Port Offers Wide Range of Activities for Cruisers

Port Lincoln is a modest cruise port with a short season that runs from December to March. For the 2023-24 season, the port expects to reach about 22,000 cruise arrivals on less than a dozen ships.

Ships scheduled to call through the end of the current season include Holland America Line’s Volendam, P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Explorer, and Seabourn’s Seabourn Odyssey. Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess called at the port on January 26, 2024.

This unscheduled arrival brings the number of cruise ships to Port Lincoln this cruise season to 10. Cruise passengers make a valuable contribution to Port Lincoln on the day of their visit, but importantly, they often result in repeat visitation for longer visits in the future and positive word of mouth, said Naomi Blacker, manager of economic and tourism growth for Port Lincoln.

The city of Port Lincoln is known for its fishing industry and seafood, and is home to about 14,500 residents.

Cruise guests disembarking in Port Lincoln will find a pop-up visitor center on the port’s wharf, and a selection of tours and activities. The city runs a town shuttle and has a hop-on hop-off bus service for visitors seeking independent touring.

Guided tours are offered by local vendors and feature activities such as the Behind the Scene Seafood Factory Tour, perfect for seafood lovers, and a Swim With the Sea Lions tour, which enables visitors to swim with the animals in their natural environment.

Carnival Provides Update on Strong Bookings and Red Sea Changes

In a significant update, Carnival Corporation reveals an impressive surge in bookings for 2024, alongside proactive changes to itineraries in the Red Sea region. However, the changes could impact the company’s financial growth.

Unprecedented Booking Momentum

Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise operator, has reported an exceptional start to the year, with booking volumes reaching all-time highs. The company has experienced robust booking momentum since November, surpassing previous records.

The final quarter of 2023 set a remarkable precedent for Carnival, with historic booking highs noted during key sales periods like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Impressively, total customer deposits soared to a fourth-quarter record of $6.4 billion, a 25% increase from the previous record in November 2022.

The final quarter also came as Carnival Cruise Line introduced its newest ship, Carnival Jubilee. The 183,521-gross-ton, 6,500-passenger ship based in Galveston, Texas, embarked on her inaugural cruise on December 23, 2023.

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship
Carnival Jubilee in Galveston, Texas

As 2024 progresses, Carnival’s booking trajectory continues its upward climb. Nearly two-thirds of the company’s 2024 occupancy has already been secured, and the first half of 2024 is nearly fully booked.

This trend positions Carnival Corporation for substantial growth. The company expects to return to historical occupancy levels and achieve a growth of over 30% compared to 2023.

Red Sea Itinerary Adjustments

However, in response to the escalating tensions in the Red Sea and surrounding areas, Carnival has decided to reroute itineraries for 12 ships across seven brands, including Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises, Seabourn, and AIDA Cruises.

These adjustments significantly impact key voyages, including those of Costa Deliziosa and P&O Cruises’ Arcadia, which were originally scheduled to navigate through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea on World Tour itineraries. Furthermore, Carnival Corporation’s AIDA Cruises has announced the cancellation of several spring 2024 voyages. This decision affects several ships in its fleet, namely AIDAbella, AIDAblu, and AIDAprima.

In addition, Seabourn’s Encore is making revisions to its Arabian itineraries. This change particularly affects two fully-booked cruises set for departure in March and April 2024.

Carnival’s assessment of the situation led to a regulatory filing that stated, “We believe that the instability in the Red Sea region currently impacting shipping could have an impact on our results of operations.”

The company expects the rerouting to affect its earnings per share by $0.07 to $0.08 for the full year of 2024, with a significant concentration of this impact in the second quarter.

Strong Outlook Amidst Challenges

Despite these challenges, Carnival Corporation maintains a positive outlook. The record levels of bookings for 2024 are expected to offset the financial impacts of the Red Sea itinerary changes, contributing significantly to the company’s performance for the year.

Completing this operational success is Carnival’s strong financial position. The company strategically redeemed $571 million in second-priority senior secured notes due 2027. This action eliminates all remaining second-lien debt, marking a significant step toward financial stability.

Rising Tensions Changing Cruise Itineraries

The Red Sea’s escalating geopolitical strife, mainly due to Houthi rebels in Yemen, has disrupted a key maritime route connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean.

This instability has affected commerce flow between Asia and Europe, and despite military interventions by U.S. and British forces, the impact on maritime operations continues to spread to cruise lines.

The situation has compelled other cruise lines to similarly adjust their itineraries. MSC Cruises rerouted MSC Poesia and cancelled three grand voyages scheduled for April. Silversea’s Silver Moon also cancelled sailings in the region.

Carnival Cruise Line Reveals Details on New Private Destination

Guests are already excited to be visiting Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination on Grand Bahama Island, Celebration Key, when it opens in summer 2025.

Now, new details about the exclusive port are amping up the excitement even further. The destination will offer something for everyone with five distinct “portals” offering unique experiences for all guests.

Celebration Key to Feature Five Portals

Carnival Cruise Line has revealed that the upcoming Celebration Key will be divided into five unique portals, each of which will have unique features to welcome guests and immerse them in authentic Bahamian culture.

“No one does FUN like Carnival and we are designing Celebration Key, and its five portals, with endless ways for our guests to unlock their own kind of fun in this incredible paradise that also celebrates the beauty of Grand Bahama,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

“Celebration Key is uniquely positioned to bring an island experience to our diverse range of guests, in a way that lets them choose their slice of ‘paradise.'”

When first arriving at the destination, which is now under construction, guests will pass through the Welcome Portal. This iconic focal point will feature an immense sand castle symbolizing the fun the destination holds. Live music will create a truly celebratory atmosphere, and information will be available to help guests orient themselves to the new port.

Great fun for all ages will be found at the Family-Friendly Portal with its large freshwater lagoon, colorful splash pad, racing waterslides, sports courts, and a variety of dining options. Guests can enjoy the beach or opt for private cabana rentals or villas with their own personal waterslides into the lagoon.

Guests who want a break from younger cruisers can opt for the Adult-Friendly Portal with access to the lagoon and warm which sands at the beach. A swim-up bar provides convenient refreshment, and a DJ will be spinning tunes to keep the party going all day long. Cabana and villa rentals are also available at this portal, along with a full-service restaurant for a relaxing meal.

Even more exclusivity can be found at the Private Club Portal, described as a “premium experience curated for those who are seeking a relaxing and luxurious day in paradise.” This adult-only retreat will have an infinity pool with stunning views, relaxing loungers, and elevated dining options.

Also part of Celebration Key will be an events pavilion for hosting weddings, vow renewals, and other celebrations, which may also be used for activities and events while guests are visiting. With the adjacent dock allowing immediate access to the destination, two Carnival ships can visit simultaneously.

The destination will also have expansion space for future development, with preliminary plans that include a waterpark, zipline course, and more. No timeline for those expansions has yet been announced, and the initial phase of Celebration Key will begin welcoming guests in July 2025.

Costs Not Yet Revealed

Of special note is that costs for cabana or villa rentals, as well as other experiences that may be offered on Celebration Key, have not yet been revealed. It is possible there may be fees to access more exclusive parts of the destination, similar to the fee Royal Caribbean International has for guests to access the new adults-only Hideaway Beach on CocoCay.

Itineraries have already been opened for ships visiting Celebration Key, with 12 Carnival ships from eight different homeports scheduled to visit the new destination in 2025 and 2026 on itineraries ranging from 3-14 nights.

The $200 million destination is already under construction, and further details will be revealed in the months to come about what guests can expect at the new port of call.

Newest Carnival Ship Rescues Kayakers Stranded at Sea

Carnival Jubilee was able to smoothly rescue two men in a kayak stranded at sea on the morning of Monday, January 29, 2024.

What was initially believed to be a man overboard emergency was quickly adapted to the rescue operation, and both men were brought safely aboard the cruise ship.

Carnival Jubilee Rescue at Sea

Carnival Jubilee was just enjoying a beautiful morning for a day at sea when a man overboard alert was called and the ship’s crew quickly sprang into action with emergency operations. A few minutes later, the situation was clarified as a rescue operation for a kayak with two men aboard rather than anyone actually overboard the cruise ship.

The men did have paddles to steer the kayak and were able to come alongside the cruise ship for immediate assistance. A rope was lowered and they safely climbed a ladder onto the ship while the kayak was left abandoned.

No supplies were immediately visible in the kayak, and only one of the men appeared to be wearing a life jacket while the other man was barefoot.

The men appeared to be from a larger vessel that may have sunk or otherwise have become disabled overnight, though those details have not been confirmed and it is possible that strong winds simply blew the kayak away from shore. The kayak’s bright yellow and orange coloring undoubtedly helped its visibility so the men could be spotted and rescued before they had drifted further.

The incident happened approximately 9 miles (15 kilometers) east of Cancun, Mexico, and 50 miles (80 km) north-northeast of Cozumel. There is no immediate confirmation of where the men had originally set sail from.

While onboard Carnival Jubilee, the men would have been provided food, water, and medical care as necessary. Local authorities were alerted, and the men were turned over to Mexican officials via a patrol boat sent to meet the cruise ship shortly after the rescue. This is standard procedure for rescued individuals, no matter what the circumstances.

Carnival Jubilee departed from Galveston, Texas on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on Saturday, January 27. The first two days of the sailing are days at sea, and the ship will spend Tuesday, January 30 in Roatan, Honduras followed by Wednesday in Costa Maya and Thursday in Cozumel. Another day at sea will bring the ship home to the Lone Star State on Saturday, February 3.

The 183,521-gross-ton, Excel-class ship can welcome 5,374 guests aboard at double occupancy, or up to 6,631 passengers when fully booked. Also onboard are 1,735 international officers and crew members who offer excellent service, as well as looking out for anyone who may need help.

Second Rescue in 2024

Carnival Jubilee‘s rescue of the two men is not the first rescue operation of 2024. On January 18, Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas rescued six stranded fishermen and their dog just north of the Yucatan Peninsula.

While it is commonly assumed that cruise ship rescues are typically of refugees fleeing their home country, this is not always the case. Refugee rescues do indeed happen, but cruise ships also offer assistance to anyone needing aid.

All mariners – regardless of the size of their ship – are bound by international maritime law to offer assistance to those at sea, regardless of who they may be, where they are, or why they require help. Cruise ship crews are well trained to offer such help in a smooth, efficient manner, safeguarding all life at sea.

Cruise Hive commends the crew of Carnival Jubilee and all cruise ships who offer such assistance to all in need.
