Barcelona Mayor Supports Limiting Cruise Ships and Passengers

0

Barcelona’s city council announced plans to limit the number of cruise ship passengers and reduce port terminals to address the city’s overcrowding issues.

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni made the announcement during a press conference on May 24, 2024. The move comes in response to Barcelona’s significant rise in cruise tourism, which reached 3.6 million passengers in 2023.

Just last October, Barcelona banned cruise ships from docking at the World Trade Center area and Muelle Barcelona Norte, particularly favored by cruise lines because of their proximity to La Rambla, one of the city’s most popular attractions.

The regulation, which began on October 22 following a 2018 agreement between the port authorities and Barcelona city council, required ships to dock further from central tourist areas to improve air quality and reduce congestion. It closed earlier, the Maremagum port, which is closest to Barcelona’s Old Town.

Although less than a year in effect, the changes have little impact on slowing congestion. In fact, in June 2024 alone, the Port of Barcelona is scheduled to receive 82 ships, including the 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Sea from Royal Caribbean International on June 2, 23, and 30, and MSC Cruises’ 6,334-passenger MSC Grandiosa on June 4, 11, 18, and 25.

During the event, Collboni emphasized the need to control the influx of one-day visitors from mega-ships like these who contribute to the city’s rising congestion, saying, “The increase in the number of cruise passengers is around 8% annually. I want to say, we are reaching a limit, and we need to put a cap on the figure.”

Of 2023 visitors, 1.6 million were one-day tourists who spent only a few hours in the city.

Although tourism represents 14.5% of Barcelona’s gross domestic product, the head of tourism for Barcelona city council, Jordi Valls, warned that exceeding the city’s capacity could diminish the value visitors bring.

Laia Bonet, the deputy mayor, also said during the press conference that while there is no specific date for signing the new agreement, the step is crucial to managing the tourist flow.

Attempting to Curb Overtourism

Last year, 803 cruise ships called in Barcelona, bringing 3.5 million passengers. It was a 13.7% increase over 2019’s pre-pandemic records.

Barcelona’s new plan to limit cruise ship passengers includes negotiating with the city’s port authorities to reduce the number of terminals. Currently, five terminals are in operation, with one under construction and a seventh planned.

The Tarragona Cruise port, which will cater to mega ships, began construction in June 2023, while the Terminal G at the Adossat wharf terminal, anticipated to be the final terminal, will be operational by spring 2027.

Didac Navarro of the Stop Cruises campaign group, told iNews, “The roads and pavements in the center of the city and near the Sagrada Familia are already saturated with cruise tourists.”

Navarro supports the city’s move, fearing that without action, the number of cruise tourists could soon reach 5 million annually.

Several European cities have taken steps similar to Barcelona’s partial ban and proposed passenger cap. Venice, for instance, implemented a ban on large cruise ships entering its historic center in 2021. In April of this year, it began imposing a tourist tax requiring all-day visitors to register and pay a €5.00 fee.

Amsterdam also introduced measures to limit cruise ship traffic. The city redirected large cruise ships to dock at a more remote terminal rather than at the city center’s Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.

Similarly, Palma de Mallorca restricted the number of cruise ships allowed to dock each day in 2022, capping it at three, with only one ship carrying over 5,000 passengers. Earlier this month, it was announced it plans to extend its ban.

Scottish Port Welcomes Cunard’s All-New Cruise Ship

Forth Ports tugs welcomed Cunard Line’s new cruise ship, the Queen Anne, into the River Forth on May 26, 2024, with a dramatic water cannon salute.

The event was further marked by a performance from local piper Louise Marshall, celebrating the ship’s maiden voyage into South Queensferry, Scotland, located 30 minutes from downtown Edinburgh and serving as the entrance to the River Forth.

“We are thrilled to have Cunard’s brand-new ship call into the River Forth,” said Rob Mason, head of cruise for Capital Cruising. “She is a magnificent vessel, and we extended a very warm Scottish welcome to her and her guests as they arrived into South Queensferry.”

Queen Anne’s arrival highlights the significance of Scotland’s cruise industry, which has substantially impacted the local economy.

According to Mason, “Scotland’s cruise business contributes significantly to the economy, supports hundreds of jobs, and delivers to local businesses and communities.”

He noted that this year marks the busiest cruise season ever for the region, as passengers and ship lines increasingly choose Scottish ports and anchorages to explore the diverse attractions, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital and the largest city in Capital Cruising’s ports.

Queen Anne joins more than 160 cruise calls scheduled for the 2024 season, bringing up to 3,000 passengers and 1,225 international cruise members to the port.

Queen Anne’s British Isles Festival Voyage

Queen Anne, the latest addition to Cunard’s fleet, is on a special theme cruise after debuting on May 3. Traveling from its homeport of Southampton, England, the South Queensferry call is the first of the British Isles Festival Voyage.

The 14-day cruise around the British Isles will arrive in Kirkwall, Scotland on May 28, Invergordon, Scotland, on May 29, and Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland on June 1. It will continue to Belfast, Northern Ireland; Liverpool, England; and Cork, Ireland, before returning to Southampton on June 7.

During the special voyage, Queen Anne will celebrate her official naming and christening in Liverpool, Cunard’s original headquarters in 1839. The June 3 event will feature a performance by world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

The festivities, hosted by musician Matt Willis and his wife, TV presenter Emma Willis, also include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, and DJ Lauren Lo Sun. The ship’s godparent is yet to be revealed.

Cunard President Katie McAlister commented on the special voyage, “Queen Annes’s maiden voyage around these shores will be a truly historic sailing, and I know many of our loyal Cunarders will be eagerly awaiting what will be an iconic journey.

As Cunard’s 249th ship, delivered by the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy on April 19, 2024, the 113,000-gross-ton Queen Anne boasts 14 decks and features art deco-inspired interiors.

Passengers can enjoy various activities, such as a world-class spa, fitness center, swimming pools, and a diverse lineup of performances in the ship’s theatre.

After her British Isles event cruise, Queen Anne will spend the summer sailing through the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Her itineraries include the Norwegian Fjords and Scandinavia, with 5- to 18-day cruises.

MSC Cruises Expands Kids and Family Programs

MSC Cruises announced the expansion of its kids and family program, debuting for summer 2024 itineraries. The cruise line is introducing new entertainment options and services, including extended hours for kids’ clubs, new family game shows, and marine conservation initiatives.

For the first time, MSC Cruises will roll out extended services for babies aged 6 months and up. Previously, baby care services were only available for children aged 1 year and older.

The new service, developed in collaboration with Chicco, will allow parents to enjoy the ship while specially trained crew members care for the children. The services include protected play areas with Chicco toys and naptime in the comfort of your stateroom or the Baby Club.

Kids’ clubs aboard MSC Cruises include the Baby Club Chicco for ages 6 months to 2 years, Miniclub Lego for ages 3 to 6, Juniors Club Lego for ages 7 to 11, Young Club for ages 12 to 14, and a Teens Club for ages 15 to 17.

“We host more than 600,000 children and teenagers across our entire fleet every year, and we want to make sure every single one of them disembarks having had the best experience,” said Matteo Mancini, corporate senior manager Kids Entertainment.

New this summer, MSC Cruises will bring the “Doremiland Open House and Party” to allow parents to spend time with their children in the kids’ clubs. During designated time slots each day, all Doremiland areas will be open for families to explore together.

In addition, once per cruise, a big family party will be hosted where parents and kids can engage in fun activities and play together.

“At the heart of our business is family. We love creating unforgettable memories and holidays for everyone, especially for families,” said Steve Leatham, global head of entertainment at MSC Cruises. “That’s why we proudly offer a fleetwide family program of entertainment and activities that resonates with our valued guests.”

He continued, “As a father of three boys, I know first-hand the incredible job our youth team does on board, not only in entertaining children and families but also in creating moments that can’t be replicated anywhere else.”

MSC Cruises Family Offerings

MSC Cruises is also introducing two new original family game shows in summer 2024. “World Quest” will be a geography-based trivia game that will test families’ knowledge of different countries and cultures, while “Caravaggio” will be a spy-themed game show dedicated to art. In the latter, children take the lead and challenge their parents in solving mysteries.

The interactive and educational experiences are designed to make learning fun, and a new program that offers families the chance to participate in activities focused on marine conservation will also be included.

Each day, one hour will be dedicated to activities that allow children to learn about marine conservation efforts through a collaboration with the MSC Foundation, which promotes sustainable development and initiatives to protect the marine environment.

The Guinness World Record activities, previously available as a trial on selected ships, will now be extended. Families can participate in record-breaking quizzes on MSC World EuropaMSC EuribiaMSC SeascapeMSC SeashoreMSC MagnificaMSC DivinaMSC MeravigliaMSC Virtuosa, and MSC Grandiosa.

Returning family favorites include the LEGO Experience On Board, where children can enjoy a range of LEGO bricks and toys and become certified Junior LEGO Master Builders; the “Break the Wall” game show; and “Cabin 12006 The Secret Game,” which offers immersive experiences with music, videos, TikTok trials, memory games, and dancing centered around the mysteries of Ocean Cay.

The MasterChef at Sea Junior programs will also return, allowing kids aged 5 to 12 to participate in a stage cooking competition inspired by the popular MasterChef show.

Carnival Cruise Line Proud to Return to Baltimore

Carnival Cruise Line has officially set sail from the Port of Baltimore once again, with Carnival Pride leaving on her very special 14-night sailing to Greenland on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

It has been a long two months since the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge that closed the port to marine traffic, but now the Port of Baltimore is back with passenger cruising.

This particular sailing of Carnival Pride is significant as it is a highly-anticipated Carnival Journeys cruise, a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list voyage for many travelers. Carnival Cruise Line did reach out to booked guests recently, confirming the Baltimore departure and ensuring that everyone is aware of the challenges visiting Greenland can have.

It was a picture perfect morning as Carnival Pride pulled in to Port of Baltimore on Sunday, with both passengers and crew eager to return to the ship’s planned homeport. The port view does look different, however, without the iconic bridge in the background.

Port of Baltimore celebrated Carnival Pride‘s return, welcoming the ship back to her year-round homeport with live music and local authorities to greet guests.

“Baltimore loves a good Carnival and today a special one came into town!” the port announced on social media. “The Port of Baltimore’s Deputy Director of Business Development & Cruise, Cynthia Burman, welcomed Carnival Cruise Line’s Pride back to our Cruise Maryland terminal for the first time since the Key Bridge collapse.”

The 87,071-gross-ton, Spirit-class Carnival Pride entered service in2002 and can welcome 2,124 guests at double occupancy, and is also home to more than 900 international team members proud to ensure everyone aboard has an amazing cruise vacation.

The ship is homeported year-round from Baltimore, offering Eastern Caribbean, Bermuda, and Bahamas 7-night sailings. The ship also offers select departures to Canada and Greenland, especially in the spring and fall, when the region’s natural beauty is an amazing tourism draw.

Carnival Pride also offers the occasional Panama Canal cruise, with the next one departing on January 12, 2025 with calls to Half Moon Cay, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Panama, and Grand Turk.

Similarly, some Southern Caribbean sailings are on offer, including visits to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Aruba, and Curacao. Carnival Pride‘s next Southern Caribbean sailing departs on November 3, 2024.

For the past two months, Carnival Pride has managed to maintain her itineraries, but temporarily departing from Norfolk, Virginia instead. Carnival Cruise Line has provided complimentary bus service for guests between Baltimore and Norfolk in the meantime. On her May 19 departure, the ship left from Norfolk but returned to Baltimore to finish the cruise on May 26.

Not the Only Cruise Line

While the cruise port is happy to see Carnival Cruise Line back at the Cruise Maryland terminal, Carnival Pride is not the only ship that has returned to Baltimore.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas resumed sailing from Port of Baltimore one day earlier, on May 25, 2024. The first sailing of the 78,717-gross-ton ship is a 5-night Bermuda itinerary. The ship also offers 9-night Bermuda cruises that include calls to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.

Also on Vision of the Seas‘ upcoming schedule are Canada and New England cruises in the autumn, select Southern Caribbean itineraries, and unique Southeast Coast/Bahamas cruises that will visit Port Canaveral and Charleston, depending on departure date.

As with Carnival Pride, Vision of the Seas is also homeported year-round from the Port of Baltimore. The Port of Baltimore is also frequently a homeport for American Cruise Lines smaller, regional ships that offer Chesapeake Bay sailings in different sailings.

Carnival Cruise Line Clears Up Confusion Over Cabin Item

Social media can be a great way to find insider tips from frequent cruisers, but passengers need to be very cautious about what advice they believe and what seems unlikely. Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald recently had to debunk a “tip” for the cruise line’s Excel-class ships that could be dangerous for some passengers.

The so-called tip involves an upholstered “box” in staterooms aboard Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. The boxes are positioned under the small vanity area in each stateroom, and have a removable lid. The interior is white and looks similar to some models of simple coolers.

“It appears somebody on another Facebook group page has been informing people that the box on the Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee cabins is in fact a cooler/refrigerator,” Heald said. “This has resulted in people complaining that theirs is not cooling their drinks and possibly in one case their medication.”

Carnival Cruise Line Cabin Stool

Many guests enjoy having extra drinks in their stateroom, perhaps cans of their favorite soda that may not be available onboard, and a refrigerator or cooler could be handy for a chilled beverage. This is not what these upholstered boxes are, however.

“They are not coolers. They are stools and they are storage units,” Heald explained. “Turnaround the top lid and you have a side table.”

If guests had been attempting to store temperature-sensitive medication in the boxes – actually storage ottomans – that could have dangerous results if the medication were to spoil from being kept too warm. Similarly, cruisers with very young children might have attempted to store infant formula or baby foods improperly, which could lead to spoilage and illness.

A quick examination of the ottoman would have debunked this unlikely tip, as it is obvious there is no cord, plug, battery pack, or other power source that would keep the interior cool. Furthermore, there is no drainage valve or other outlet for meltwater if it were to have been filled with ice like a standard cooler.

Select staterooms on all Carnival ships do have mini-bars with coolers, though they are not always sufficient to store medicine with precise temperature needs. Travelers can contact Carnival Cruise Line’s Special Needs team to request assistance with storing medicine if necessary.

“Portable medi-coolers are available in limited quantities, and on a first-come, first-served basis with a refundable rental deposit required,” the cruise line’s special needs webpage states. “If a cooler is not available, our Medical Center can assist guests with refrigeration needs (accessible during operating hours of the Medical Center only) or you may bring your own personal-size cooler for this purpose.”

Guests can also request an ice bucket from their cabin attendant to chill drinks if desired, or get a glass of ice from the buffet drink stations onboard.

Debunking Tips and Rumors

While it can be helpful to get advice from other cruisers, it is important to recognize that not all such advice may be accurate, as everyone’s travel experiences are different.

Carnival Cruise Line has frequently debunked different rumors, such as whether or not the cruise line is banning all mobility scooters (it isn’t), how travelers can get free cabin upgrades on embarkation day (they can’t), and the ever-popular towel animals are being discontinued (they aren’t).

When in doubt, travelers should not consult social media, but rather should seek out information directly from Carnival Cruise Line’s website, or even contact John Heald with questions. As Brand Ambassador, he answers hundreds of questions every day on all sorts of topics and can direct travelers to accurate information.

Passenger Jumps off World’s Largest Cruise Ship

A male passenger from Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is in critical condition after jumping overboard only one day into his 7-night Western Caribbean sailing, which embarked on May 25, 2024.

The incident, which occurred on the morning of Sunday, May 26, 2024, unfolded while the world’s largest cruise ship was en route to Roatan, Honduras, from its homeport of Miami, Florida. At the time, the ship was approximately 300 miles from PortMiami and about 30-40 miles north of Santa Lucia, Cuba.

Royal Caribbean stated to Cruise Hive:The ship’s crew immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard and launched a search and rescue operation. Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.

The emergency was immediately noticed, and members of the 2,350-person crew sprang into action to stop the ship and begin a search and rescue mission. According to cruise tracking data, the ship halted her course for approximately two hours and stayed put until the man was brought back onboard.

Guests currently onboard the 7,600-passenger ship confirmed the situation by posting videos of two small rescue boats launched from the vessel. Sadly, since being rescued from the water, the man has passed away after initially being in a critical condition.

At this time, it’s unclear what prompted the man to jump. His identity has been kept confidential to protect the privacy of the passenger and his loved ones.

With the rescue mission ending in success after only a couple hours, Icon of the Seas Western Caribbean itinerary is thus far unaffected by the delay. The new, Icon-class ship should be able to make up time at sea to arrive in Roatan, Honduras, on time on the morning of Monday, May 27.

Before the 248,663-gross ton vessel returns to Miami on June 1, she will also call on Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, which is the cruise line’s private island destination.

Since her maiden voyage on January 27, 2024, Royal Caribbean’s newest ship has been alternating between 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, which she is scheduled to continue operating as far out as April of 2026.

Recent Overboard Situations from Royal Caribbean Ships

This isn’t the first time in recent months that a Royal Caribbean ship has handled a man-overboard emergency. Unfortunately, the majority of these situations have a low chance of successful rescues, which can be made lower by injuries the person may have sustained in the fall, weather conditions, water temperature, and strong currents.

It’s safe to say the Icon of the Seas guest is lucky to be alive, but crew members onboard Symphony of Seas did also successfully rescue a person who went overboard off the west coast of Spain on October 29, 2023. It’s unclear if this person was a guest or member of the 2,200-man crew.

But unfortunately, other recent incidents have ended in tragedy. Most recently, a 20-year-old man fell overboard from Liberty of the Seas on April 4, 2024, during a 4-night Eastern Caribbean cruise to and from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Despite quick action taken by the Freedom-class ship and the US Coast Guard, the rescue mission ended unsuccessfully after six days of searching with no sign of the missing guest.

Over the 2023 holidays, a 41-year-old male passenger fell overboard about 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, from Vision of the Seas on the night before Christmas Eve, December 23, 2023. The ship’s crew immediately initiated emergency protocols and contacted the US Coast Guard for assistance – but once again, the man was unfortunately not found.

Looking even further back, Wonder of the Seas – which is now the second largest cruise ship in the world after the arrival of Icon of the Seas – experienced a man-overboard incident last summer.

The passenger went into the water on August 29, 2023, while the 7,084-guest vessel was sailing just south of Cuba on a modified Western Caribbean itinerary to avoid a hurricane.

Few details were ever released about this crisis. But it is known that for approximately three hours, the massive cruise ship retraced its path, using spotlights, small crafts, and watchers to try to locate the missing person.

The situation was further complicated when a passenger onboard experienced a medical emergency, and the decision was made to stop the search in order to get the necessary treatment for the ailing guest. The person who went overboard was never found.

Carnival Cruise Ship Rescues Dozens Stranded at Sea

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Radiance rescued 25 people from a small, stranded boat off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The ship was initially contacted by the US Coast Guard (USCG) about the small vessel’s distress call, and immediately responded to divert to the boat’s location.

A total of 25 people were on the small boat, including three children. The overloaded boat did have an outboard motor, but it appeared to be non-functioning or out of fuel. There was also inadequate room for supplies onboard the small craft. Some, though not all, of the individuals were wearing life jackets.

Once the refugees were brought aboard the cruise ship, they were provided with food, water, and medical assistance as needed. A rendezvous was arranged with USCG officials so they could be turned over to the proper authorities, as is standard procedure for these types of rescue operations.

There are no reports of injuries among those rescued, and the ship’s daily operation was not significantly affected by this essential diversion.

The 102,232-gross-ton, Sunshine-class Carnival Radiance – formerly Carnival Victory prior to a refit in 2021 – was enjoying a day at sea as part of her current 3-night Baja Mexico sailing. The short delay for the rescue has not had an impact on the ship’s itinerary, and she is visiting Ensenada on Sunday, May 26 as planned.

Carnival Radiance is homeported year-round from Long Beach, California. She offers cruises from 3-6 nights visiting Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, and Catalina, as well as occasional 14-night Carnival Journeys cruises to Hawaii.

Various other Carnival ships have rescued refugees in recent months. On April 21, Carnival Paradise rescued 27 individuals near Cuba, and on February 24, Carnival Celebration rescued 20 people in a small boat in the Florida Straits north of Cuba.

All cruise lines will respond to rescue needs, whether the individuals at risk are refugees, fishermen, pleasure boats, or any other person who requires assistance.

What Happens to Rescued Refugees?

Carnival Cruise Line recently helped clarify what happens during these types of rescue operations, and corrected misconceptions about how refugees may or may not be treated once onboard the cruise ship.

“They do not get a free cruise. They do not get to walk around the Ship in any guest areas or even crew area,” explained John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador. “They are confined to one area, under the watch of our security team. They are given food, water, and medical assistance. They are transferred to a United States Coast Guard Ship.”

It should be noted that rescued refugees are not “allowed into [the US]” for free, but are turned over to the appropriate authorities. In the vast majority of rescue cases, the individuals will be repatriated back to their home countries.

“We do have to rescue them because it is the law. Yes, we rescue them because it is the right thing to do,” Heald said of this Carnival Radiance rescue. “Bravo Captain and crew. This is another shining example that we will always be there for those in peril on the sea.”

Yes, at times rescue operations may interfere with a cruise ship’s itinerary, causing a minor delay and possibly shortening time in the next port of call. It is rare, however, that a port of call would be completely cancelled due to a rescue, though it can happen.

Ultimately, the protection of life and rescuing individuals who are so desperate for a better life that they would flee their homes in ill-equipped, shoddy watercraft under dubious conditions is always worth a very slight interruption to a vacation.

Another Celebrity Ship Itinerary Change – More on the Way?

Celebrity Cruises has begun reaching out to guests booked on upcoming voyages of Celebrity Ascent to inform them of multiple itinerary changes. Most recently, travelers on the February 9, 2025 departure have learned they will not be visiting Labadee, Haiti as planned, but instead will visit an alternative port.

The impacted sailing is a 7-night roundtrip sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The original plan was to visit Bimini, Labadee, and Grand Cayman.

“Due to a change in our itinerary planning for our winter 2024-2025 sailings, we are removing our visit to Labadee, Haiti, on our Celebrity Ascent February 9, 2025 sailing,” the email notification read. “We’ll now enjoy a visit to Cozumel, Mexico, on Day 4, with an extended stay in port, instead of visiting Labadee.”

Celebrity Ascent Cruise Ship
Celebrity Ascent Cruise Ship

This means Celebrity Ascent will be in Cozumel on the same day as originally planned for Labadee, and the remainder of the ship’s itinerary remains unchanged.

The extended stay – from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. – gives guests plenty of time to enjoy and explore the popular Mexican port of call. The long visit may also permit more extensive shore excursion options, such as visits to the iconic Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula. Exact shore tour options available through Celebrity Cruises will vary based on what can be arranged for the visit date.

No exact reason has been given for removing Labadee from Celebrity Ascent‘s sailing, but this follows another recent change for the ship’s January 6, 2025 departure. That alteration also removed Labadee from the itinerary, but instead substituted a visit to Falmouth, Jamaica.

The same reasoning – “a change in our itinerary planning” – was given for that schedule change and port swap as well.

Cruise lines do occasionally shift ports and schedules as they balance operational needs and ensure that various ports will not be overcrowded for each visit. This helps give travelers the best possible experience at each destination they visit.

Because these itinerary changes all involve Labadee, however, it is also possible that the cruise line is making the decision out of safety concerns. All port visits to Labadee have been cancelled since mid-March due to increasing civil unrest and violence in Haiti.

Royal Caribbean International, also part of the Royal Caribbean Group along with Celebrity Cruises, has confirmed that all Labadee visits as suspended at least through September.

“We have suspended all visits to Labadee fleetwide through September 2024, and we continue to monitor the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence team. Please know that the safety and comfort of our guests are always our highest priority,” the notification on the cruise line’s website states.

While the cruise itineraries changed for Celebrity Ascent are in January and February, it is very likely that safety and security are factors in making these changes. The safety of guests and crew members are always a cruise line’s top priority.

Will More Itineraries Be Changed?

The 140,600-gross-ton, Edge-class Celebrity Ascent is currently in the Mediterranean for the summer season, but will move to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing Barcelona on October 26.

From Port Everglades, the ship – newest in the Celebrity Cruises fleet – will offer a variety of cruises, mostly 7-night sailings. Eastern Caribbean itineraries will visit St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Puerto Plata.

The Western Caribbean cruises are scheduled to visit Grand Cayman, either Bimini or Nassau in The Bahamas, and Labadee. As Labadee is being removed from at least several departures, and it is possible the port may be removed from all of Celebrity Ascent‘s Western Caribbean sailings.

Guests booked on upcoming Celebrity Ascent cruises with Labadee on the itinerary should stay in close communication with Celebrity Cruises in case of updates or alterations.

Sick Cruise Passenger Got Stranded at Caribbean Cruise Port

For one Georgia couple, a cruise to paradise quickly became anything but. Loretta Cox, 54, and her husband embarked on a Carnival Cruise to the Caribbean on Sunday, May 19, 2024. By Tuesday, the mother of six and grandmother to nine was so sick she had to be placed on life support.

She collapsed and two teenagers helped her and called a medic. They had to put her on the ventilator on the boat,” her daughter, Aldes Brooks told a local news outlet.

Fluid had filled Loretta’s lungs, rendering her unable to breathe. During the ship’s scheduled port call in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, May 22, the couple was transported to the local hospital so the ailing passenger could receive proper care.

As Loretta fought to recover, the family’s nightmare really began. They learned the hard way that international cruise ports may not accept standard health insurance plans that apply in the US. Judging by the amount of expenses, it seems like the Cox’s may not have opted for specialized travel insurance that would have covered medical expenses while abroad.

According to the family, it cost $28,000 to transport Loretta to the hospital via ambulance and have her admitted to the intensive care unit, and the hospital wouldn’t accept her insurance. Each day in the hospital racked up another $4,000.

Loretta’s loved ones couldn’t immediately afford to send their beloved mother and grandmother back to Georgia either. She required specialized transport through AirEvac International, which cost more than $25,000 and needed to be paid upfront.

“Besides the thousands that had to be paid up front for them to allow her into the hospital, plus the $4,000 a day, the cost to fly her home on AirEvac International is almost $30,000,” a friend of the family wrote on a GoFundMe dedicated to bringing Loretta home.

The family worked with media outlets to share their story, and thanks to the kindness of strangers, was able to raise $18,000 between donations to Brooks’ Zelle and Cash App, as well as the GoFundMe.

With the additional funds, the family was able to bring Loretta back to the United States. She was transported via air ambulance to a hospital in Florida at approximately 2 a.m. local time on Friday, May 24.

“I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to the news stations, family and community. Your selfless contributions and the support during this time is truly inspiring and appreciated. We are still accepting donations for we have a long road ahead,” Brooks shared.

Loretta will stay in the hospital for the foreseeable future, where her condition shows signs of improvement but she remains heavily sedated and on life support.

Carnival Cruise Line Has a Big Presence In The Caribbean

It’s unclear which Carnival ship the couple was sailing on – as multiple vessels from the large cruise line’s 27-strong fleet are currently cruising the region.

In fact, two Carnival ships were docked in the Dominican Republic on the day that Loretta was rushed to the hospital – Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Freedom.

Additionally, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Elation, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Sunrise, and Carnival Pride are all actively operating Bahamian cruises ranging in length from three to seven nights, as of the time of publication.

When the Cox’s ship docked in the Dominican Republic, they would have disembarked in Amber Cove. This Eastern Caribbean destination, which is located around 7 miles northwest of Puerto Plata, is home to Carnival’s private resort destination.

The 30-acre retreat, which opened in 2015 on the island of Hispaniola, is used exclusively by Carnival ships and its sister companies, such as Princess Cruises. The private destination can accommodate up to two large cruise ships at a time, or up to 8,000 guests per day.

While in Amber Cove, visitors are encouraged to enjoy watersports, dining, shopping, pristine beaches, and shore excursions offered by the cruise line.
