Here’s Why Celebrity Summit Guests Were Told Not to Show Up Early

Key Aspects:

  • Several guests of Celebrity Summit’s previous sailing experienced gastrointestinal illness.
  • Out of an abundance of caution, the ship was deep cleaned and sanitized before guests were allowed to embark on April 30.
  • Passengers were told not to arrive at the cruise port before 11:30 a.m. or before their scheduled appointment time.

Embarkation for Celebrity Summit’s April 30, 2026, sailing got off to a slightly late start, but it was for a very good reason.

Because multiple guests onboard the previous sailing reported gastrointestinal symptoms to the medical facility, the cruise line enacted enhanced sanitation protocols and told the next round of guests not to arrive at the port early to allow time for a deep clean.

The up to 2,218 passengers booked on the current 8-night sailing were told not to arrive at the Los Angeles World Cruise Center before 11:30 a.m. PST and not to arrive before their designated appointments.

“During the previous sailing, a few guests aboard Celebrity Summit presented to the medical facility with symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” Celebrity Cruises wrote in a letter, which was obtained by Cruise Hive.

“Due to anticipated delays in the debarkation process for our previous Summit sailing, the terminal will not be open until 11:30 AM. Guests must arrive at their selected arrival time to ensure a smooth boarding process,” the letter stated.

Guests who attempted to arrive at the port too early ran the risk of being turned away and told to come back later.

Quick Action May Have Prevented Full-Fledged Outbreak

It’s commendable to see the approximately 999 crew members onboard Celebrity Summit spring into action at the first sign of illness. The quick response may have prevented the situation from becoming an actual outbreak.

As of the time of publication, no formal outbreak has been announced by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, which tracks illness on cruise ships. This means less than 3% of the population onboard became sick, or else an outbreak would have been declared.

Enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols were quickly implemented onboard, including more frequent cleanings of high touch surfaces and public areas.

“Please know that the safety and comfort of our guests and crew are always our top priority,” Celebrity Cruises reassured.

“In an abundance of caution and to help prevent any spread of illness, we have implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitation procedures onboard as recommended by public health agencies worldwide,” the cruise line explained.

Additionally, guests who are joining the 90,940-gross ton vessel for back-to-back cruises were asked to temporarily disembark the ship in Los Angeles to allow the sanitation to take place.

“On the Summit now doing a B2B2B. 139 of us are now back on the ship as the sanitation has been completed,” one such guest said on Facebook at around 11:20 a.m. PST on April 30.

The crew will likely continue to practice the enhanced cleaning protocols throughout the current sailing to make sure any trace of illness has been knocked out.

No Itinerary Changes Reported

Per cruise tracking data, Celebrity Summit left Los Angeles on time at 4 p.m. on April 30 and has officially begun her one-way voyage to Vancouver, British Columbia. As there was no delay in setting sail, the itinerary did not need to change.

Before arriving in Vancouver on May 8, the Millennium-class ship will visit San Diego and San Francisco in California, as well as Victoria in British Columbia.

The Celebrity ship will then spend the 2026 Alaska season going back and forth between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, as she operates a series of (hopefully illness-free) 7-night cruises.

Why the King’s Arrival Could Spell Trouble for Norwegian Cruise Passengers

Key Aspects:

  • Royal Naval Dockyard traffic will be disrupted on Friday, May 1, due to His Majesty King Charles III’s visit to Bermuda.
  • This may impact guests returning to Norwegian Breakaway before the ship’s 3 p.m. departure that day.
  • There is no official change to the ship’s schedule but it would be wise for guests to plan extra time to return to the ship.

Norwegian Breakaway is in the midst of a 5-night Bermuda sailing that departed Boston on Sunday, April 26. The ship arrived in Bermuda on Wednesday afternoon, but there may be a bit of trouble leaving as planned on Friday, May 1.

The 145,655-gross-ton ship is currently docked at the King’s Wharf Cruise Ship Terminal at the Royal Naval Dockyard, exactly when His Majesty King Charles III is visiting Bermuda, his first visit to the island as Sovereign.

Due to security precautions, traffic to the Royal Naval Dockyard is being restricted on Friday, just when the 3,963 cruise guests may be making their way back to the cruise terminal in preparation for departure.

Most critically, the strictest road closures will be happening just at the time the ship is scheduled to set sail.

“A full road closure will be in effect, blocking all vehicular access,” the notification states for 1-4 p.m. on Friday. “Normal traffic flow will resume at 4 p.m.”

The cruise ship, however, is scheduled to depart at 3 p.m. This would mean that any late tours or last-minute explorations might get caught in the road closures and guests could end up missing the ship’s departure.

Earlier in the day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., access into the Dockyard is being restricted to “authorized personnel only” though it is not clear whether tour operators or taxis would be permitted.

It is possible the ship’s departure from Bermuda may be slightly delayed to accommodate royal scheduling and ensure that all guests have adequate time to return to the vessel, given the unforeseen road closures and extra security.

At this time, there is no confirmed change for the ship’s schedule, and she is expected back in Boston on time on Sunday, May 3.

The King is not expected to have any interaction with the cruise ship, and onboard operations should not be impacted in any way.

Exact scheduling for royal visits, or official visits and tours for any head of state, are not generally made known in advance due to security arrangements. Often, the exact timing may not be known until just a day or two before the visit as details are refined for different daily engagements.

Guests onboard Norwegian Breakaway should plan for extra time to return to the ship if they will be enjoying those last few hours ashore in Bermuda, just in case.

Local Impacts on Cruise Ship Schedules

It is not unusual for local events to impact cruise ships, or at least cruise guests and how they get to and from their respective cruise terminals.

Cruise Hive has reported regularly on special events that cause traffic congestion near homeports, such as 5K and marathon races, music festivals, and even pirate parades.

Road construction and port development projects can also impact traffic flow and cause traffic snarls for cruise travelers (I’m looking at you, PortMiami).

Royal visits don’t tend to affect cruise ships often, but then again, Norwegian Breakaway is docked at King’s Wharf, so it does make sense that there might be a slight conflict there when the King is visiting.

The most recent visit of a reigning monarch to Bermuda was in 2009, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were on hand for the 400th anniversary of the island’s settlement.

His Majesty King Charles III last officially visited Bermuda in 1970, making this current visit even more historic and meaningful for the people of Bermuda.

Carnival Confirms Neck Fans Are Allowed Onboard After Influencer Misinformation

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed that personal, portable neck fans are permitted to be brought onboard.
  • Other types of fans, including clack fans and any fans larger than 12 inches in diameter, are not allowed.
  • Neck fans can be helpful for guests to keep cool on hot days, particularly in humid ports of call.

Fans can be a hot topic for cruise travelers, and not just who’s a fan of which ship or cruise line, but what types of cooling fans can or cannot be brought onboard a ship.

Carnival Cruise Line has now confirmed that one convenient design of a personal fan is permitted, much to the sweaty relief of guests.

The fan in question is a neck fan, a small electronic personal fan that can look at first glance like a pair of headphones. Both ends of the fan have enclosed blowers for a gentle breeze right where it may be needed most, and the lightweight fans typically recharge via USB or may be battery-operated, depending on the model and manufacturer.

Following an uninformed statement by a cruise “influencer,” multiple guests have reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, about whether these fans are permitted.

“Five different people have asked me if these can be brought on the ship because apparently a lovely cruise influencer is saying they cannot,” Heald noted. “I have checked with my colleagues at the mothership and you can bring these on board.”

Cruise Hive previously reported that Carnival had banned a specific type of personal fan, the “clack” or “clap” style fan popular for some line dances. Those fans were prohibited due to the risk of injuring others on crowded dance floors.

Other types of personal fans are not banned, however, including handheld, battery-operated designs and any small fans no larger than 12 inches in diameter.

“Neck fans are allowed,” Heald said unequivocally.

Many guests also bring small fans for use in their staterooms, improving airflow and providing better cooling for comfortable sleep. Guests should note, however, that magnetic ceiling fans are also prohibited and will be confiscated if guests try to bring them onto a Carnival ship.

“The reason ceiling fans are not allowed is that unlike your house the ship is moving. And if that movement happens it may dislodge the fan from the ceiling and cause it [to] fall on you causing injury,” Heald has explained about that ban.

Should Neck Fans Be a Must-Have Cruise Accessory?

Neck fans might not seem like they could be powerful enough to make a difference against hot Caribbean temperatures, but many guests have great experiences with them if they bring them along.

“It works great when walking around on the hot port days,” one guest said.

“We do have these, they work great, but half the time we forget them in the cabin,” another laughed.

The exact level of cooling and effectiveness vary on different models, and some guests prefer designs that have adjustable cooling ends. Others note that some neck fans can be heavy and might cause neck pain, or the sound they generate could be too loud for comfortable use.

Some guests even have more creative uses for simpler designs that may not be powerful enough for effective cooling.

“It helps a little but more than anything, it keeps the gnats away from your face,” one guest shared.

Experienced cruisers know that while it may be cool on an air-conditioned cruise ship, especially on upper decks where breezes are more common, it can be a shock to debark in a port of call to much hotter and more humid conditions.

Staying cool and well-hydrated is essential for guests to safely and comfortably enjoy their days in port and neck fans can help.

All cruise lines, including Carnival, regularly update their prohibited items list, especially as new technologies are developed or common items may become a concern. Just recently, clarifications were added to Carnival’s list regarding small wagons, vapes, cannibis products, and portable speakers.

Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas Passes Big Test Before July Launch

Key Aspects:

  • Legend of the Seas has successfully completed her intense sea trials in the Baltic Sea.
  • The ship returned to the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland on Thursday, April 30.
  • Now the ship’s outfitting will continue and she’s on track for delivery to Royal Caribbean in a few weeks.

The highly anticipated third Icon-class ship returned to the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland on Thursday morning, April 30, 2026, following her successful sea trials. With no major issues to note, the ship is now ready to begin the next phase of her construction ahead of her July debut.

“Legend of the Seas has returned from successful sea trials,” Meyer Turku confirmed. “All sea trial tests were completed as planned, and the vessel returned to the shipyard early on Thursday morning. Next the outfitting work will continue as we prepare for delivery this summer.”

The ship had departed for these critical operational tests on Sunday, April 19. The full testing took 10 days, as all the ship’s major systems were not only in operation in the open water for the first time, but were tested to maximum operational limits to ensure full compliance with regulations and design specifications.

More than 2,000 engineers, specialists, and technicians were onboard the massive 250,800-gross-ton ship for the wide range of tests.

“Over the next 10 days, Legend will push her engines to the limit – think doing donuts and hitting max speed,” Royal Caribbean described when the tests began.

Typical operations tested include acceleration and deceleration, braking distances, turning radius at different speeds, emergency stops, navigation, safety responses, and much more.

The tests were conducted in the Baltic Sea, which provides superb real-life conditions to ensure any new ship is operationally sound.

Outfitting Up Next for Legend of the Seas

Now that Legend of the Seas has returned to the shipyard, the outfitting stage, also called the fitting out, of her construction can continue in earnest.

This is when final details on the ship’s exterior and interior are added, really making the vessel come to life and prepare for the guest experience.

Interior fixtures and decor, flooring, accent lighting, artwork, furniture, and more must all be put into place as the ship prepares to join the Royal Caribbean fleet. This work has already been underway, but will now truly gain speed as the finish line nears for the ship’s debut.

These necessary touches will enhance the ship’s brand identity but will also add her personal touches that will distinguish her from her sister ships, Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas.

Undoubtedly, Legend of the Seas will also be different from Hero of the Seas, already under construction, as well as the yet-unnamed fifth Icon-class ship and the sixth and seventh ships in the class that Royal Caribbean ordered even while the sea trials were underway.

Outfitting will take several weeks before the ship is ready to be delivered to Royal Caribbean, when the construction is complete and the cruise line officially takes possession of the vessel.

Following the delivery, more finishing work will be completed and the ship will begin taking on supplies and crew members in preparation for entering service.

When Will She Set Sail?

Legend of the Seas‘ construction has been progressing well since her keel was first laid in October 2024. In fact, the construction has gone so well that the ship’s debut has been moved up.

Cruise Hive has already reported that the ship will now welcome her first guests on July 4, 2026 with a 7-night Western Mediterranean itinerary roundtrip from Rome.

The ship will also arrive in Florida sooner than expected. Following her late summer in the Mediterranean, Legend of the Seas will set sail for her first transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale on October 25.

Her first sailing from the Sunshine State will now be a 3-night getaway departing Port Everglades on November 11 and visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay. That sailing will likely include celebrations for the ship’s official christening and other media events, though it is open for booking by eager guests.

From her Florida homeport, Legend of the Seas will be offering 6- and 8-night cruises with Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean routes. In April 2027, she will return to the Mediterranean for another summer in Europe with departures from Barcelona and Rome, and she will be back to Florida in November 2027.

Carnival Served With Multiple Lawsuits Over Major Data Breach

Key Aspects:

  • More than 8.7 million records have allegedly been impacted in a major data breach impacting Carnival Corporation.
  • The cruise line has now been slapped with three class action lawsuits related to the breach.
  • In the claims, the cruise company is accused of negligence related to inadequate cybersecurity protocols.

At the end of April, news broke that Carnival Corporation had been targeted by ShinyHunters, a prolific cybercriminal group that is infamous for data theft, extortion, and selling stolen information on the dark web.

Now, Carnival is facing a wave of lawsuits accusing the brand of negligence, citing inadequate cybersecurity protocols and a failure to notify impacted victims in a timely manner.

On April 24, Cruise Hive reported that more than 8.7 million records were allegedly stolen, including sensitive personal data from guests as well as internal corporate data.

It’s not yet clear which data was specifically stolen, but any of Carnival’s brands could have been affected, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, Cunard, Costa Cruises, and AIDA Cruises.

Released information could include details like birthdays, loyalty club numbers, credit card numbers, passport data, phone numbers, passwords, and more.

Carnival initially promised to communicate directly with passengers whose data was leaked to provide additional information and support, but that wasn’t good enough for some past guests.

Three separate class action lawsuits that are related to the breach were filed against the cruise company between April 22-24, 2026, and it wouldn’t be surprising if more were on the way.

The legal action comes from Yvonne Vasquez in California, Zachary Pottle in Florida, and Ashley Cole in Tennessee. All three suits were filed against Carnival Corporation in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Carnival is Accused of Negligence

Pottle was the first to file his lawsuit on April 22, and his legal team is primarily arguing that Carnival did not have adequate data security protocols in place. This sentiment is echoed in the other two suits.

Like the other plaintiffs, Pottle feels that Carnival should have been able to foresee that a data breach was possible given an increase in cyberattacks targeting large financial and travel corporations, and did not take adequate precautions to protect customer data.

All three plaintiffs allege that their sensitive personal information was not encrypted, which would have made it unreadable to the hackers.

Cole and Vasquez also claim that additional security measures, such as two-factor authentication, were not in place. It’s unclear where the legal teams sourced that information, and it has not been confirmed publicly by Carnival Corporation.

And as another nail in the proverbial coffin, both Cole and Vasquez’s suits state that ShinyHunters warned Carnival that the data would be leaked if the company did not comply with their demands by April 21 (which the brand did not).

The former passengers are seeking compensation because they say that they are now at an increased risk of fraud and identity theft for life because of the data breach.

They are seeking financial compensation, free credit monitoring service for life for all members of their class action suits, and a court-ordered overhaul to ensure that the data that remains in Carnival’s possession is properly protected.

Carnival Responds to Security Breach

When news of the data breach first became public, Carnival told Cruise Hive that it was aware of unauthorized activity and had taken immediate action to block any further unauthorized access. According to the lawsuits, the breach likely occurred on or around April 18, 2026.

“After detecting unauthorized online activity involving a single user account, we acted quickly to shut it down and block any further unauthorized access and have notified law enforcement,” Carnival said in a statement at the time.

“Data privacy and protection are extremely important to Carnival Corporation and we’re working closely with trusted global security experts to be thoughtful and deliberate in our review of the data involved, recognizing that anonymous reports circulating online are not always accurate,” the cruise company continued.

Carnival said that any impacted guests would be notified as soon as possible, though it’s unclear if that communication has occurred at this time.

Depending on how things go, Carnival may need to make its second massive data breach-related payout in recent history to make things right.

In 2022, the brand was ordered to strengthen its security practices and shell out $1.25 million due to a data breach in August of 2020.

The earlier breach impacted around 180,000 Carnival guests and employees, which is minimal compared to the millions that have been wrapped into the current global breach. Only time will tell how the situation will resolve.

Why Star Princess’s Los Angeles Debut Is a Big Deal for West Coast Cruisers

Key Aspects:

  • For the very first time, Star Princess arrived at the Port of Los Angeles.
  • The Sphere-class ship will feature LA in many upcoming 2026-2027 itineraries.
  • Itineraries include Pacific Coast, Mexican Riviera, and Panama Canal voyages.

Move over, Hollywood Walk of Fame, there’s a new star in Los Angeles: the 177,800-gross ton Star Princess. The Port of Los Angeles welcomed Princess Cruises’ newest Sphere-class ship for the first time on Tuesday, April 28, for an overnight visit.

Princess Cruises has a long history with the Port of Los Angeles. Over the last sixty years, they have offered more frequent sailings from LA than any other cruise line. The arrival of their newest and most luxurious ship shows that the relationship isn’t going anywhere.

“For Princess to add yet another cruise ship sailing from our LA Waterfront is terrific news, and a notable milestone in our decades-long partnership,” said Gene Seroka, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director

This stop in Los Angeles is brief, as Star Princess will depart at 11:59 pm on April 29, 2026, for Seattle to begin her first-ever Alaska season. However, she will return in September, offering many itineraries featuring LA across 18 months.

The second ship in Princess Cruises’ Sphere Class, Star Princess features 2,157 total staterooms, 80 of which are suites.

Across its 21 decks, she boasts 5 locations for live entertainment, such as Spellbound by Magic Castle and 30 dining venues, including specialty dining like Butcher’s Block by Dario and The Catch by Rudi. For relaxation and sun, there are five different pools onboard as well as a wellness studio and spa.

In November 2025, Cruise Hive reported that the 4,300-guest ship was christened by two other stars who are no strangers to Los Angeles: Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, entrepreneur Camila McConaughey.

Star Princess has since homeported in Fort Lauderdale, offering Caribbean itineraries, before this move to the west coast.

What Itineraries Are Offered From LA?

Star Princess joins Discovery Princess, Emerald Princess, and Crown Princess in Los Angeles to offer a variety of itineraries heading to Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and the Pacific Coast.

The first major itinerary on the menu for Star Princess departing from Los Angeles is a 16-Day Panama Canal voyage departing October 4, 2026. This itinerary will stop at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Fuerte Amador (Panama City), and Aruba, before dropping cruisers off in Fort Lauderdale.

Another exciting option is a 7-Day Mexican Riviera cruise departing April 19, 2027, hitting Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas before returning to Los Angeles.

Also offered is a 4-Day Pacific Coast itinerary departing April 26, 2027, and heading one way, non-stop to Vancouver.

So, whether your vibe is fun in the Mexican sun or a scenic trip north, the Port of Los Angeles has you covered with their newest star.

Los Angeles Cruising Is Growing

The arrival of Star Princess comes as LA prepares to expand its cruise presence, and is a good omen of the growth to come.

In January 2026, Cruise Hive reported on plans for a massive cruise terminal expansion project at the Port of Los Angeles.

As an effort to prepare for the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be hosted in LA, the port partnered with Carrix, Inc., and JCL Infrastructure to build a brand new, modern cruise terminal at the port.

The new port terminal will feature sustainable shore power capabilities, allowing shore power-enabled ships like Star Princess to hook up directly to the city’s power grid and shut off their engines while docked.

Additionally, the World Cruise Center is being redeveloped and upgraded by Pacific Cruise Terminals. It’s safe to say that we may be seeing a lot more large, modern ships like Star Princess docking in the city of angels in the near future.

Why Thousands of Cruise Guests Spent the Day Waiting to Step Ashore

Key Aspects:

  • Guests of Norwegian Encore were delayed by Customs and Border Control agents in San Francisco.
  • The screening process took much longer than normal due to the ship’s late arrival, technical difficulties, and a death onboard.
  • Passengers weren’t allowed to go ashore for several hours, and some never even made it off the cruise ship.

A routine screening from Customs and Border Control at the Port of San Francisco turned into an hours-long delay for guests of Norwegian Encore.

The NCL ship, which is operating two repositioning cruises simultaneously, arrived in San Francisco on April 28, 2026, for an overnight visit that quickly turned into a lesson in patience.

Due to a variety of issues impacting the customs process, guests were not allowed to go ashore for several hours and some were never able to disembark at all.

Making matters worse, guests who did manage to go ashore were not allowed to reboard the 169,116-gross ton ship until the clearance process was completed.

Guests of the current 18-night sailing were supposed to get one full day to enjoy the port on April 28, before disembarking in San Francisco on April 29.

Passengers staying onboard for the current 22-night sailing would get two full days to explore before sailing onward to Astoria, Oregon, and Victoria, British Columbia.

The 3,958-guest ship is bound for Seattle, Washington, where she will arrive on May 3, 2026, to disembark the remainder of the current passengers and to begin her Alaska season.

Technical Difficulties Impact CBP Agents

Some guests might be wondering why all passengers had to go through customs since nobody was beginning or ending their sailings that day, and there is actually a reason for this.

Though Norwegian Encore began the current two sailings in Miami, Florida, every port she has visited since embarking on April 11 has been an international destination. The Breakaway Plus-class ship sailed to Colombia, Panama, and Mexico, before arriving in San Francisco.

As this is the first US port call on the itinerary, the ship and its passengers had to be cleared by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents.

“As per federal regulation, all passengers are required to go through an immigration screening at the first U.S. port when returning from an international destination,” Norwegian Cruise Line told NBC News in a statement.

While no one denies that customs is important to maintaining safety and security within the US, the issue is that the normally expedited process essentially took the entire day.

Unfortunately, the normal facial recognition technology that is used to efficiently screen US citizens was broken, so all passengers had to go through the biometric screening that is usually reserved for international guests.

The full process includes photographing and fingerprinting guests, as well as conducting interviews. With over 3,000 guests onboard, this is a time consuming ordeal.

Avid cruisers were shocked at the thoroughness of the clearance process, reporting that it was more extensive than they had experienced during previous sailings.

“They asked you questions…I showed him my driver’s license, my veteran’s card, showed them everything,” one passenger, named David Jones, told NBC.

“I’ve been on five cruises and I’ve never had a problem, ever…I’ve never gone through this anywhere,” another current guest, named Arthur Morrisette, reflected.

As of the time of this publication, the screening process is complete, and the NCL ship is scheduled to depart from San Francisco at 6 p.m. PST on April 29.

It’s unclear at this time if Norwegian Cruise Line has or will provide guests with any compensation for the inconvenience and/or missed shore excursions.

Additional Factors Cause Delays

It wasn’t just technical difficulties and an extra thorough screening process that caused the hours-long delay. A variety of other factors contributed to the slowdown.

CPB explained that part of the issue was that Norwegian Encore docked three hours late, which Cruise Hive confirmed by looking at cruise tracking data. This means that the CBP agents got off to a late start.

The late docking was most likely related to inclement weather, though this has not been confirmed by the cruise line. The San Francisco Port area is under a Small Craft Advisory through the night of April 29 due to strong winds reaching up to 25 knots and swells of up to 10 feet.

Additionally, CBP stated that a deceased passenger had to be retrieved and processed by a local coroner before the customs process could actually begin.

Details of the death are not publicly available, though Cruise Hive has no reason to believe the circumstances were suspicious at this time.

When these factors were combined with malfunctioning technology, there was no way to get around the extended delay except to go through it.

Carnival Cuts Platinum Loyalty Benefits on Brand Ambassador’s Alaska Sailing

Key Aspects:

  • Platinum guests will not receive key VIFP benefits on Carnival Spirit‘s May 5 departure from Seattle.
  • The 7-night Alaskan sailing is the 2026 FFS Cruise with brand ambassador John Heald.
  • Diamond guests are still retaining all their loyalty benefits for the very special cruise.

With the Alaska season just getting underway for Carnival Cruise Line, guests are eager to get right into the fun and enjoy their voyages in the Last Frontier. One very special voyage, however, will not be offering the loyalty benefits high level members of the cruise line’s VIFP program might expect.

Platinum guests booked on the May 5, 2026 sailing of Carnival Spirit have been notified they will not be receiving key perks typically associated with their loyalty status.

“Due to the high number of Platinum guests joining us on this voyage, we will not be able to provide the following benefits,” the email explained.

The benefits that will not be available for the 7-night cruise include priority embarkation and debarkation either in Seattle or at any ports of call, the early stateroom access to drop off luggage, or priority luggage delivery to guests’ staterooms.

Furthermore, the cruise line may not be able to offer the priority line at Guest Services portside on Deck 2 or priority phone assistance when calling Guest Services.

“These operational changes are consistent with other voyages where we have a very large number of Platinum guests,” the email continued. “We apologize for any disappointment and thank you for your understanding.”

It should be noted that Diamond guests will still receive all of their benefits for this sailing.

Carnival Spirit Letter
Carnival Spirit Letter

Carnival Cruise Line does not disclose the number of VIFP guests on different sailings. Carnival Spirit can welcome up to 2,124 guests at double occupancy.

Cruise Hive has reported frequently on different Carnival cruises losing loyalty benefits due to large numbers of loyal guests on specific sailings.

While many of those cruises-without-perks are longer voyages, such as repositioning sailings or transatlantic cruises, any sailing might be impacted depending on its overall bookings.

Carnival Spirit will depart Seattle on Tuesday, May 5, and will enjoy visits to Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria before returning to the Evergreen State on May 12.

The 85,920-gross-ton ship will remain in Alaska through mid-September, offering weeklong cruises throughout the summer.

At the end of the season, she will first offer a 15-night roundtrip sailing from Seattle to Hawaii before repositioning back to Mobile for the winter. Carnival Spirit will be back to Alaska for the 2027 sailing season.

A Very Special Cruise Impacted

While all Alaskan cruises are immensely popular, this particular sailing, the May 5, 2026 departure of Carnival Spirit, also happens to be the 2026 “For Fun’s Sake” (FFS) cruise with John Heald, the cruise line’s brand ambassador, hosting special events all week long.

Typically, Heald only hosts one FFS cruise per year. This is the first time the themed cruise has been in Alaska. Previous sailings were in the Caribbean, though different options are offered each year. The 2026 sailing is the eighth FFS cruise, and they all sell out remarkably quickly.

To be clear, the FFS cruise is not a full-ship charter. Instead, guests must book the sailing separately and then opt in to the FFS evens with an extra registration and nominal fee.

Depending on the ship, anywhere from 500 to 800 spaces will be available for guests to join the unique events and activities. The full itinerary of FFS events is not revealed until guests are onboard, but there are often themed activities to the itinerary.

“We will have a private viewing deck during the transit through Tracy Arm Fjord with some special food and lashings of hot soup,” Heald said when the cruise was announced. “That’s just one thing I am planning.”

Of course, in March 2026 Carnival Cruise Line removed Tracy Arm Fjord from all sailings this season due to safety concerns related to avalanche risks. There will still be scenic cruising in Endicott Arm Fjord, where such viewing can be offered.

Other exclusive events include meet-and-greets, photo ops, autographs, and more, and all FFS guests also get limited edition swag to commemorate the very special cruise.

The loss of Platinum VIFP perks will not impact the FFS activities onboard, and all guests are sure to have an exciting and very memorable cruise vacation.

Carnival Festivale Construction Progress Revealed in New Shipyard Photos

Key Aspects:

  • Construction crews in Germany’s Meyer Werft Shipyard are making great progress on the completion of Carnival Festivale.
  • Carnival shared a sneak peek of the new build, showing that the ship’s exterior is nearly finished.
  • The fourth Excel-class ship is just one year away from entering service in May of 2027.

Carnival Cruise Line dropped a sneak peek at the upcoming Carnival Festivale, and it’s clear that the fourth Excel-class ship has come a long way since construction first began on April 8, 2025.

The cruise line shared pictures of the 182,015-gross ton vessel in dry dock at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and the images are nothing short of impressive.

“Just 1 year out until Carnival Festivale sets sail. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at her coming together…” Carnival Cruise Line wrote in a caption with the images on Facebook.

The first picture shows the sections of the vessel’s massive hull, or the bottom of the ship, coming together. Several large steel pieces that will eventually be welded in a watertight seal are on full display.

A complementary image shows the name Carnival Festivale etched into the ship’s bow. However, the lettering is just a placeholder. The bow will eventually be painted blue and the name will be written in gold.

Another final picture shows the outside of the ship coming together, with scaffolding in place to build out the private guest balconies. Cruise Hive previously reported that the 949 crew cabins have already been completed, but the 2,636 passenger cabins are still in progress.

What Comes Next for Carnival Festivale?

The 5,356-guest ship still has just over a year before she enters service with an inaugural transatlantic cruise that departs from Southampton, UK, on May 2, 2027.

And while a year may sound like a long time, the newest Carnival ship still has to meet several milestones before she can officially begin her career at sea.

At this point, the exterior of the ship is nearly all put together and both the bridge and the massive LNG-powered engine have successfully been installed.

Over the next weeks to months, construction crews will continue perfecting the ship’s exterior, which includes the completion of the hull and installing any remaining guest cabins that haven’t already been put in place.

When the hull and the exterior of the ship is ready, Carnival Festivale will touch water for the first time in a float out ceremony, which will be her next major milestone.

Assuming all goes well, the remainder of the ship’s interior and design work will likely be completed in a wet dock. For reference, the shipyard has a wet dock conveniently located next to the big construction hall.

This is also when construction crews will begin to construct Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, which will be the biggest ever waterpark at sea in the history of Carnival Cruise Line.

The water-filled zone will feature six waterslides, including two family raft slides, known as the SunSoaker and Turning Tides.

As her launch date gets closer, the new ship will undergo her sea trials. Assuming she passes, she will then officially be delivered to Carnival Cruise Line during a traditional handover ceremony.

Where to Find Carnival Festivale

Carnival opened bookings for its newest fleet member in August of 2025, with sailings through April of 2028 available to book now through the cruise line.

The ship will homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida, and will primarily operate 6- to 8- night voyages to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. There are also a couple of shorter 4- to 5-night voyages to the Bahamas, which embark on May 19, 2027, and Jan 3, 2028.

Notably, every single itinerary includes a visit to Celebration Key in the Bahamas, allowing guests to enjoy Carnival’s newest ship and newest private island simultaneously.
