Carnival Partners With AI Provider to Enhance Connectivity

Carnival Corporation has announced a new partnership with Neuron, a company that provides a connectivity management platform designed to enhance internet connectivity. The world’s largest cruise operator hopes to significantly improve internet connectivity on its cruise ships using Neuron’s AI-powered platform.

The partnership aims to ensure consistent, high-quality internet access for both passengers and crew members, enhancing the overall experience on board.

Neuron and Carnival Aim for Increased Connectivity

Carnival and Neuron, a platform that enhances the overall WiFi and connectivity onboard ships, announced a new partnership on December 5, 2023. Together, the two companies will be using Neuron’s AI-powered platform, which is particularly effective for mobile entities like ships.

Using real-time data and artificial intelligence, Neuron offers comprehensive control over connectivity across various service providers. This will enable Carnival to get the most out of the new internet offerings the cruise company introduced recently, such as Starlink Maritime and 5G connectivity onboard its newest cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee.

In essence, Neuron uses real-time data and AI to provide companies with incredible insights and control over their connectivity, across multiple providers. This will enable them to offer high-quality connectivity to guests and crew members during their time onboard, with fewer interruptions.

For things that move, like cruise ships, seamless connectivity is a uniquely tough challenge to solve,” said Benny Retnamony founder & CEO of Neuron.

“In partnership with Neuron, Carnival Corporation has demonstrated that with the right data and technologies at their fingertips, they can drive more flexible and agile connectivity operations – and as a result, make connectivity experiences even better for their guests and crew, at all times, in all places.”

In simple terms, Carnival Corporation will use the technology and data to make their internet service better and more reliable for everyone on the ship, no matter where they are.

“We want to continue providing the best available connection at sea and our partnership with Neuron allows us to have full visibility and control over our connectivity,” said Paul Marsh, director of global connectivity for Carnival Corporation.

“By investing in new and emerging technologies, we can push the boundaries of connectivity innovation with a fresh approach that will accelerate the future of connected cruising and transform the guest experience.”

Enhancing Guest Experiences with Cutting-edge Technology

The integration of advanced technologies such as AI, 5G, and satellite connectivity like Starlink on Carnival-owned cruise ships is revolutionizing the guest experience. This transformation goes far beyond providing stable internet connections.

Guests can soon enjoy seamless streaming, stay in touch with loved ones, and even attend virtual meetings without the fear of connectivity issues, regardless of their location at sea. Compared to just a few years ago, when internet connections were in the single digit Mpbs, this represents a huge leap forward.

AI’s capabilities are set to dramatically enhance how Carnival Corporation interacts with and serves its guests. By analyzing millions of data points collected across the fleet, AI can offer highly personalized services.

This means guests can enjoy customized recommendations, from activity suggestions based on past preferences to tailored dining experiences. For returning guests, this technology ensures that their in-cabin preferences are remembered and implemented across any ship in the fleet.

Looking ahead, the potential of these technologies extends even further. AI and advanced connectivity can revolutionize onboard entertainment, virtual excursions, and even navigation and safety protocols. They open the door to innovative experiences never seen before onboard cruise ships.

Establishing partnerships like the one between Carnival and Neuron will also benefit the cruise lines. Internet service on large cruise ships remains a profitable business model, generating substantial revenue for these companies.

By ensuring that guests are satisfied with the available internet packages and their connectivity, the likelihood of more guests opting for onboard internet purchases will only increase.

New Cunard Cruise Ship to Sail Special Maiden Voyage

Cunard has added a British Isles Festival cruise to the roster of voyages its newest queen will operate when she debuts in May 2024. Queen Anne, under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, will sail the theme cruise three weeks after entering service.

Queen Anne Theme Voyage Celebrates British Culture

Queen Anne, the 3,000-guest luxury ship set to join the Cunard fleet in May 2024, will sail a special British Isles Festival voyage that celebrates British culture and features guest performers and speakers.

The 14-day cruise, sailing roundtrip from Southampton, UK, on May 24, 2024, will be the ship’s first cruise around the British Isles, with calls at ports in England, Scotland, and Ireland. The onboard festival program will provide British and Irish entertainment, and offer Insight lectures tied to British heritage and the UK’s natural resources.

The theme cruise follows Queen Anne’s maiden voyage, set for May 3, 2024, when she will sail a 7-day cruise roundtrip from Southampton, UK, with port calls at Lisbon, Portugal, and La Coruna, Spain.

Christmas has come early for travelers looking to celebrate the arrival of Queen Anne as we announce her British Isles Festival voyage, which will be a real celebration of our newest ship and showcase the very best of Great Britain and Ireland, said Katie McAlister, President of Cunard.

Queen Anne’s maiden voyage around these shores will be a truly historic sailing and I know many of our loyal Cunarders will be eagerly awaiting what will be an iconic journey, added McAlister.

The British Isles Festival cruise will call at Edinburgh, Bass Rock, Isle of May, Kirkwall, Inverness, Isle of Skye, and Glasgow, Scotland; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Cork, Ireland; and Liverpool, England.

Following her British Isles event cruise, Queen Anne will spend the summer season sailing in the Western Mediterranean and in Northern Europe, including the Norwegian Fjords and Scandinavia. Departures of 5- to 18-day cruises will be offered from Southampton, Rome, and Kiel and Hamburg, Germany.

An 18-day Canary Islands Celebration cruise, for example, sails roundtrip from Hamburg and calls at Arrecife de Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Coruna, Spain, plus Funchal, Portugal.

The ship will sail Europe cruises until January 2025, when she will embark on her first world voyage, a 111-night cruise roundtrip from Hamburg.

New Dining, Entertainment Will Debut on Queen Anne

The 14-deck Queen Anne will offer 1,400 staterooms, and like the other Cunard ships, Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria, the new-build will feature three accommodations categories — Queens Grill Suites, Princess Grill Suites, and Britannia Club staterooms. Under the category system, certain lounges and dining rooms are reserved for guests who book Queens and Princess suites.

As Cunard counts down the months to Queen Anne’s launch, it has revealed new partnerships, dining venues, and entertainment options that guest onboard the new ship will enjoy.

The luxury cruise line, a brand of Carnival Corporation, announced a collaboration with two-Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux, well known for Le Gavroche, his French restaurant in London. Roux will create a gala menu exclusively for Queen Anne‘s Queens Grill restaurant and he will revamp the menu at the ship’s Golden Lion pub, a signature venue across the fleet.

New dining venues on Queen Anne will include Aji Wa, serving Japanese specialties; Aranya, an Indian restaurant; Sir Samuels, offering steaks and seafood; and Tramonto, an al fresco venue serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

Another new partnership brings the British Film Institute onboard the Cunard new-build. The institute will provide blockbuster movies and films to be shown on the outdoor screen in The Pavilion, a two-deck, open-air theater space on Queen Anne.

Mediterranean Cruise Port Marks First Shore-Power Connection

Malta’s Valletta Cruise Port celebrated a major environmental milestone when it provided shore power connectivity to a cruise ship for the first time.

The port’s five cruise ship piers now offer the shore-side electrical service to cruise ships equipped to use it, allowing the destination to eliminate engine emissions from docked ships.

Port of Valletta Reaches Environmental Goal

Global Ports Holding (GPH), the operator of Valletta Cruise Port, has announced that the port completed its first integration of cruise ship shore power. Viking’s Viking Saturn was the first ship to hook into the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) on December 1, 2023, followed the next day by sister ship Viking Venus

Both ships were simultaneously powered by the OPS, an environmental sustainability project that is a key part of Malta’s Grand Harbour Clean Air Project. The shore-side power capability is the first for the GPH network, which manages some 30 ports across the globe.

This accomplishment underscores our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation. I extend my sincere thanks to the Maltese Government and Infrastructure Malta for their pivotal role in bringing this project to fruition. Special appreciation goes to the Valletta Cruise Port team for their persistent efforts and coordination, said Mehmet Kutman, chairman and CEO of Global Ports Holding.

The €49.9 million ($54 million US) project was funded by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta, and Transport Malta. By providing shore-side power, cruise ships can turn off their engines while in port and continue to run hotel operations. The process virtually eliminates ship emissions.

The Valletta Cruise Port has a record of prioritizing environmental sustainability and in 2022, was named World’s Best Cruise Terminal for Sustainability by the World Cruise Awards.

“The successful integration of shore power at Valletta Cruise Port stands as a testament to our dedication to eco-friendly initiatives. We prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations, and this achievement aligns with our commitment to advancing green energy solutions across all GPH facilities,” said Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and general manager of Valletta Cruise Port.

Cruise Rebound Continues at Maltese Port

The Maltese port is a key destination for ships sailing the Western Mediterranean. In 2022, the last year of available data, the port welcomed 283 ship calls and 530,000 cruise arrivals. In pre-pandemic 2019, it received 372 ships and 902,000 cruise arrivals.

The Valletta Cruise Port benefits from a natural deep-water harbor that enables mega-ships to call. One of the industry’s largest ships, MSC Cruises’ new MSC World Europa, called at Valletta during her inaugural voyage in April 2023. The 215,863-gross ton ship can accommodate up to 6,700 guests.

Smaller ships embrace the port, too, including upmarket line Oceania Cruises’ 1,200-guest Vista, which was christened in a gala ceremony at the Valletta Cruise Port in May 2023. Ships scheduled to call at the port in December 2023 include MSC World Europa, Viking Saturn, and luxe line Silversea Cruises’ Silver Moon.

Port manager GPH has achieved significant growth in the past few years and operates some of the world’s busiest ports, such as Nassau Cruise Port, in the Bahamas, and Barcelona, Spain.

The Nassau port recently celebrated a $300 million revitalization project. The port can now accommodate six cruise ships simultaneously, including three Oasis or Icon Class cruise ships, and has a daily passenger capacity of 30,000.

In the last two years, GPH has secured management contracts with several key ports, and currently runs Alicante (Spain) Cruise Port; Lisbon Cruise Port; Prince Rupert Cruise Port, British Columbia; St Lucia Cruise Port; San Juan Cruise Port, Puerto Rico; Antigua Cruise Port; the  Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands; and Taranto (Italy) Cruise Port, among others.

Tropical Cyclone Forces Royal Caribbean Ship to Cancel Ports

Guests sailing aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum of the Seas learned the day before embarkation that their 6-night Queensland cruise itinerary needed adjustment and every port of call was cancelled.

One substitute port was available for an overnight stay, but the cruise is very different than originally planned.

Quantum of the Seas Itinerary Change

Quantum of the Seas was to have departed Brisbane, Australia on a 6-night cruise to top ports of call in Queensland on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. The day before embarkation, however, booked guests received email notification of a dramatic itinerary change.

The cruise was to have first enjoyed a day at sea, then visited Airlie Beach, Yorkeys Knob (Cairns), and Willis Island over the next three days. After a final day at sea, the ship would return to Brisbane on Tuesday, December 12.

Now, every originally scheduled port of call is cancelled, and Quantum of the Seas will instead have a day at sea, an overnight visit in Sydney, and two additional days at sea before returning to Brisbane. The departure and arrival times in Brisbane are unchanged.

“We’ve been monitoring adverse weather along our intended path,” the notification email explained. “To ensure a safe and comfortable sailing and after exploring all options, we’ll skip our visit to Airlie Beach, Cairns, and Willis Island and enjoy an overnight in Sydney, Australia instead.”

The ship will be in Sydney from 9 a.m. on Friday, December 8 until 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 9. Guests should note that Quantum of the Seas will be anchored rather than docking, meaning that small tender boats will be used to ferry guests ashore.

While Sydney has plenty of space to accommodate the 168,666-gross-ton cruise ship, two other vessels are already scheduled in port on Friday – Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas and Seabourn’s Seabourn Odyssey – and berth space is limited. On Saturday, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge will be joining Quantum of the Seas.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the weather – your safety is our top priority. Please know, being onboard is one of the safest places because we are faster and can move out of the way of any inclement weather,” the email concluded.

Quantum of the Seas can welcome 4,180 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 4,905 passengers when fully booked. Also onboard are 1,500 international crew members who will help travelers weather any storm with as much fun and relaxation as possible.

What Poor Weather?

The poor weather impacting Quantum of the Seas is a tropical system that has formed northeast of the cruise’s route, but is already having an impact on regional weather patterns.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper is currently spinning near the Solomon Islands, creating strong winds and rough seas well away from the storm’s center. The storm is forecast to move south-southwest over the coming days, bringing it closer to the ship’s route.

In fact, Jasper is predicted to be just east of Willis Island over the weekend, just when Quantum of the Seas‘ original schedule had the ship visiting the island.

While the storm is still several days away from reaching Australia, the predicted landfall could be anywhere between Cairns and Brisbane, most likely early next week. By sailing south to Sydney, Quantum of the Seas will stay well away from the severe weather.

Depending on its overall track and what intensity it reaches, Tropical Cyclone Jasper may impact the ship’s return to Brisbane. Royal Caribbean International is keeping a close eye on the storm and will make further itinerary adjustments if needed.

Guests on the ship’s next sailing – a 9-night South Pacific itinerary departing Brisbane on Tuesday, December 12, will want to say in close contact with Royal Caribbean in case there may need to be adjustments to their sailing. At this time, however, it is too early for any such changes to be predicted.

New Disney Cruise Ship Receives Iconic Funnels

The construction of Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship is continuing apace at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where Disney Treasure is receiving her iconic funnels.

The 4,000-guest ship is scheduled to enter service in December 2024 with plenty of new features and many Disney favorites.

Disney Treasure Receives Funnels at Shipyard

Disney Cruise Line’s forward and aft funnels, with their blazing red color, are classic features on the top decks of its ships. They have officially been installed on Disney Treasure at her construction bay at Meyer Werft, and the funnels have received a coat of primer paint.

Eager to satisfy Disney Treasure construction-watchers, Disney Cruise Line provides building updates on a regular basis. Even though the first steel was cut less than a year ago, in January 2023, the keel was laid in March 2023, and the installation of the ship’s bridge block was completed in June 2023. The block houses the ship’s navigational systems.

With the funnels in place, work can continue on other aspects of the ship. However, the funnels atop Disney Treasure are designed not only for appearance. They also will play a big role in activities and accommodations.

The forward funnel will be part of the ship’s AquaMouse water coaster thrill ride, where powerful jets will propel two-person vehicles through 760 feet of winding tubes.

The funnel will also house a new EPCOT-inspired Tomorrow Tower Suite, an accommodation for up to eight guests that overlooks the ship’s top deck. Its nearly 2,000 square feet will provide multiple rooms, a full kitchen, and a private elevator.

New Features Include Shows, Dining Venues, Magic Spaces

Cruisers who step aboard the new Disney Treasure starting in late 2024 will find several new experiences along with many Disney Cruise Line favorites.

A new dining experience inspired by Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios is called Plaza de Coco, and is billed as a theatrical dining concept tied to the Disney and Pixar movie “Coco.” Set in a theater-in-the-round venue, dining tables will surround the performance stage.

Disney Treasure will be the line’s first ship to reimagine some of the experiences found at the Disney theme parks and in its movies. Periscope Pub, for example, is a lounge inspired by the 1954 film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The submarine-style decor is designed to evoke underwater mysteries.

In another nod to Disney’s classic movies, the new ship’s Grand Hall will highlight three iconic Disney characters – Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and the animated Magic Carpet from the hit movie “Aladdin.”

Also new to the cruise line, a ghostly experience awaits cruisers onboard Disney Treasure. The Haunted Mansion Parlor is a lounge that will feature spirit-inspired cocktails in a spooky setting. The bar’s concept is based on an existing magic attraction found at Disneyland, in California, and at Magic Kingdom in Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort.

Disney Treasure also will introduce a stage production called “Disney: The Tale of Moana,” an adaption of the 2016 animated film “Moana.” The show will follow the story of Moana, the daughter of the village chief, as she undertakes an adventurous ocean voyage to save her Polynesian island homeland.

Classic favorites, such as  “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure,” will be featured on the ship as well, along with the line’s signature pirate deck parties and fireworks displays.

Eastern Caribbean cruises will call at Tortola, BVI, Disney Castaway Cay, and either San Juan, Puerto Rico, or St. Thomas. Western Caribbean itineraries aboard Disney Treasure will visit Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel, Mexico.

Royal Caribbean Opens Bookings for Star of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International has officially opened bookings for Star of the Seas, the groundbreaking addition to its Icon-class fleet. Set to embark on its maiden voyage in August 2025 from Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, passengers can expect innovative design and exclusive amenities.

Star of the Seas Bookings Open

Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s second ship in its new Icon-class fleet, is now accepting bookings for its inaugural sailings. Bookings are expected to outpace Royal Caribbean’s phenomenal first Icon-class ship, Icon of the Seas, which broke every single-day booking record in the cruise line’s 53-year history when it first accepted bookings in October 2022.

Crown & Anchor Society members receive first access to bookings on December 5. Bookings for the general public begin on December 6.

The ship will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida, with its inaugural cruise launching on August 24, 2025. Cruisers will find 7-night itineraries to both eastern and western Caribbean destinations.

“Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day” bookings begin at $1,496 per person for interior cabins, $1,776 for outside-view cabins, $2,126 for balcony cabins, and $3,186 per person for suites. Four dates are currently available for booking: August 24, September 14, October 5, and October 26.

Sailings will be roundtrip from Port Canaveral and include visits to Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

“Western Caribbean & Perfect Day” bookings begin at $1,506 per person for interior cabins, $1,806 for outside-view cabins, $2,156 for balcony cabins, and $2,916 for suites. Fifteen dates are available for booking between August 31, 2025, and April 12, 2026. Sailings include stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay; Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico.

What Features Will the Second Icon-Class Have?

Like its sister ship, Icon of the Seas, launched earlier this year, Star of the Seas will invite passengers to explore eight distinct neighborhoods, each offering diverse experiences. However, Royal Caribbean promises the new ship will offer unique features and experiences, from thrilling adventures to serene retreats, and more than 40 dining and drinking options.

Construction Continues in Finland on Star of the Seas

While specific details about size and capacity remain undisclosed, Star of the Seas is expected to resemble the Icon fleet’s first ship. Icon of the Seas, currently the largest cruise ship in the world, features 20 decks and 2,805 staterooms, measures 1,198 feet in length, weighs 250,800 gross tons, and can hold 7,600 guests and an international crew of 2,350.

Star of the Seas remains under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, the same ship that delivered Icon of the Seas. More details will be announced in the coming months.

Carnival Cruise Line Quietly Hikes Dining Prices

Carnival Cruise Line has recently increased the pricing at multiple specialty dining venues fleetwide, with cost going up from just $1 per person to staggering increases of as much as $51 per person, depending on the ship and restaurant.

The new prices went into effect on December 1, 2023 and are now implemented on all of the line’s ships as holiday sailings get underway.

Specialty Restaurant Prices Increase

Multiple specialty restaurants aboard Carnival ships are now commanding higher prices after recent rate increases. While no official announcement was made for the price changes, the new rates for the most popular specialty restaurants in the fleet are confirmed on the cruise line’s website.

Not every restaurant onboard is impacted, and there is no associated increase in gratuity fees or other service charges at this time. Gratuities are automatically included in the per person rates for some specialty dining restaurants, though an additional 18% gratuity is assessed for Bonsai Teppanyaki reservations and guests may always extend additional gratuities at their discretion.

The new prices (all in USD) are as follows:

  • Steakhouse – $49 per person (+$1 / 2% increase)
  • JiJi Asian Kitchen – $24 per person (+$6 / 33% increase)
  • Cucina del Capitano – $24 per person (+$6 / 33% increase)
  • Bonsai Teppanyaki – $38 per person for lunch, $42 for dinner (+$3 / 9% increase for lunch; +$4 / 11% for dinner)
  • Rudi’s Seagrill – $49 per person (+$1 / 2% increase)
Cucina del Capitano, Carnival Cruise Line

It must be noted that prices differ for Cucina del Capitano aboard Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, as that venue operates differently aboard the Excel-class ships. All guests on those vessels receive one complimentary dinner at Cucina del Capitano (unlimited free dinners on Carnival Jubilee), and a nominal $8 per person charge is assessed for additional dinners.

Other specialty venues and dining events, including Il Viaggio and the popular Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, have not had any price change at this time. Similarly, fees for room service are not increasing at the moment.

Most Dramatic Price Increase

The most dramatic of the specialty dining price increases is the Chef’s Table exclusive experience, a private, small-group dining event with a multi-course, wine-paired meal that includes exclusive menu items, behind-the-scenes insights, and other unique experiences. On some ships, a galley tour may be included, or a premium upgraded menu and “enhanced experience” may be offered for the elite meal.

Chef’s Table pricing has always varied among different ships depending on the size of the ship and how exclusive the event can be. Prices may also vary for select sailings, such as during inaugural seasons or holiday cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line Chef's Table

The old pricing ranged from $80-99 per person, while the new price is $90-150 per person. This is an increase of $10 to $51 depending on the ship – an increase of at least 13% and as much as 52% per person. For an entire family hoping to enjoy this elegant and entertaining meal, this can be quite a shock to the cruise budget.

The rates for the Chef’s Table do not include an additional 18% gratuity that will be added to each reservation, making the cost on the most expensive ships – Carnival Panorama, Carnival Venezia, and the upcoming Carnival Firenze – a whopping $354 for a couple to enjoy the experience.

Why No Notice of the Increases?

While prices for specialty dining can be increased at any time without prior notice, Carnival Cruise Line does generally notify guests of impending increases a few days or weeks before the new pricing takes effect.

This typically gives booked guests the opportunity to make their reservations at the lower price point to take advantage of savings before they set sail. After the date of the increase, all new restaurant reservations – even for existing cruise bookings made before that date – are subject to the new specialty dining pricing.

There is no information available about why the price increases were not advertised ahead of time, which – while not required – is often considered a courtesy to booked guests. It is possible these increases may only be temporary tests, or an announcement may yet be forthcoming if additional price changes are still being finalized for other venues.

Of interesting note is that these dining price changes come at the same time Carnival Cruise Line announced increased Wi-Fi prices fleetwide. The internet price change does not take effect until December 8, and guests do have the opportunity to lock in the lower rates by booking a plan before the increase date.

Multiple Itineraries Changed for Norwegian Cruise Line Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line has notified guests booked on several early 2024 departures of Norwegian Encore that the ship’s itinerary has been changed. The changes apply to the January 28 and February 4 sailing dates.

While each cruise will still be visiting the same ports of call, the arrival and departure times have been adjusted which could impact any shore tours passengers may have privately arranged.

Norwegian Encore Itinerary Changes

Guests booked on the January 28 and February 4 departures of Norwegian Encore – both 7-night cruises – have received notifications of slight itinerary changes. Every port of call on each cruise has been adjusted, though the changes are somewhat minor. No ports are cancelled and the port order remains the same, but the times in every port have been altered.

“We are committed to providing the best vacations at sea and have been working tirelessly to continue to elevate the quality of our offerings and overall guest experience while driving a positive impact on society and the environment,” the notification read. “As we optimize itineraries for fuel efficiencies, we have modified Norwegian Encore’s itinerary.”

The ship will still be departing Miami, Florida, but will leave at 5 p.m. rather than 5:30 p.m. as originally planned. Guests with very late arrival appointments will want to be sure their travel to the cruise port is adjusted so they arrive well before the cutoff for check-in and boarding.

The first day of the cruise is a day at sea, but the ship’s visit to Puerto Plata on the second day has been trimmed by one hour. Norwegian Encore will still arrive in the Dominican Republic at 7 a.m., but will now be leaving at 3 p.m. instead of 4 p.m.

The next day’s arrival in St. Thomas will be two hours earlier than the original schedule, now at 9 a.m. rather than 11 a.m. The ship will still remain docked until 7 p.m., giving guests an extra two hours in the morning to enjoy the picturesque destination.

The fourth day’s visit to Tortola, however, has been trimmed both in the morning and the afternoon. The ship will now arrive at 6:45 a.m. rather than 6 a.m., and will depart at 2:30 p.m. instead of 3 p.m.

The stops in the Virgin Islands are followed by a day at sea as planned, and the last port of call is at the cruise line’s private island destination in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay. That visit has also been trimmed by one hour, with Norwegian Encore departing at 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. as originally scheduled.

The arrival back in Miami is unchanged at 7 a.m., so guests’ onward travel plans after the cruise do not need to be adjusted, which will be a relief for passengers with early flights to reach as they return home.

In total, the overall time in all ports of call has been reduced by 75 minutes. While not a significant change, the small adjustments do add up.

Why Such Slight Changes?

The reasoning given for these tweaks to Norwegian Encore‘s cruise schedule is “fuel efficiency.” With earlier departures, the ship can sail more slowly between ports of call, conserving fuel along the way.

It is also possible that dock availability and other ships’ schedules may be influencing Norwegian Encore‘s timing in order to avoid time idling while waiting for other ships to clear channels or turning basins. The timing of tides might also have a slight influence on the ship’s schedule, though this is unlikely.

Notifying guests about these changes gives travelers time to contact any private tour companies they may have used for shore excursions to reschedule or cancel if necessary. Pre-paid tours booked through Norwegian Cruise Line will be automatically adjusted to the new port times if needed.

Cruise lines often make schedule adjustments in the weeks or months before sailing as port times become more clear. Factors like port dredging or construction, other ship schedules, cargo operations, and staffing changes can all impact cruise ship schedules.

Guests booked on any upcoming Norwegian Encore cruise should stay in close communication with their travel agent or directly with the cruise line in case of similar adjustments to their sailing.

The 169,116-gross-ton Norwegian Encore is a Breakaway-plus vessel that joined Norwegian Cruise Line in 2019. The ship is able to welcome 3,998 guests per sailing (double occupancy), and is also home to more than 2,000 international crew members.

Virgin Voyages’ newest “ladyship” – Resilient Lady – has arrived in Australia, cruising into Sydney Harbor at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5 for the first time. Upon arrival, a gorgeous wooden speedboat headed out to meet the 110,000-gross-ton vessel, sleekly escorting her toward Circular Quay.

None other than Sir Richard Branson was at the helm of the speedboat, smiling and waving a thumbs-up at guests lining the decks of the cruise ship.

“What a beauty! Just so lovely,” he said as the ship arrived. “It’s just incredible to think it’s come all the way from Europe to here. A lot of people are very excited to see it, and me, maybe number one that’s excited!”

After the speedboat greeting, Branson went to the summit of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge to oversee the ship’s arrival and docking, and to wave to guests as they passed beneath the iconic bridge.

“Sydney is one of my favorite cities in the world, and we wanted to ensure our arrival was as spectacular as the Sydney Harbour itself,” he said. “To stand at the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and watch Resilient Lady come into Circular Quay was one of the most exciting moments since we founded the Virgin brand.”

The founder of the Virgin Group has been celebrating this milestone for Virgin Voyages in a big way. In mid-November, Branson gave a full plane of Virgin Airline travelers each a free Virgin Voyages cruise, as the flight was flying nearly the same route that Resilient Lady will take between Melbourne and Hobart on her official “mermaiden” voyage, now just days away from her December 11 departure.

The cabin crew, baggage handlers, and pilots associated with that special flight also received free cruises, and in total, more than $1 million of prizes were given away.

Resilient Lady has actually been in Australia since November 27, when the ship visited Darwin as part of her repositioning itinerary from Singapore. The ship has also already visited Yorkeys Knob and Airlie Beach on her way to Sydney.

It is the arrival in Sydney at the conclusion of that voyage, however, that truly sets the ship in Australian waters for the season. Resilient Lady will remain anchored in Sydney for two nights, then will make her way to Melbourne to begin her Down Under tenure.

Sailing Virgin Voyages in Australia

Resilient Lady will offer a diverse season of Australian cruises, ranging from short 2-, 3-, and 4-night getaways to much longer 12- and 14-night voyages. Melbourne and Sydney will both serve as embarkation ports for different sailings, and select voyages will also embark from Auckland, New Zealand.

Depending on the sailing date and cruise length, Resilient Lady will be visiting a variety of amazing destinations, including Burnie, Hobart, Picton, Napier, Tauranga, Wellington, Dunedin, and Christchurch.

The ship will finish her inaugural Australian season in mid-March and will depart Sydney for the last time on March 27, 2024 for a 15-night one-way trip to Singapore, visiting several final Australian ports along the way. She will spend the northern summer offering Greek Isles cruises, and in late summer and early fall 2024 will homeport from Portsmouth, UK for several weeks.

The newest of the Virgin Voyages’ fleet, Resilient Lady debuted in Greece in May 2023. The ship can welcome 2,700 guests aboard at each sailing, offering a unique, elevated, adults-only vibe with 13 passenger decks to enjoy. Guests can indulge in the onboard tattoo parlor, more than 20 bars and restaurants, cozy hammocks on every balcony, five elite production shows, and much more.

Also onboard are over 1,100 international crew members to ensure that everyone has an amazing cruise vacation, no matter where the ship is sailing.
