St. Maarten is celebrating Icon of the Seas’ first visit with a spectacle as iconic as the world’s largest cruise ship! The Caribbean destination is planning a special fireworks display to commemorate the ship’s debut in the port.
Caribbean Port Plans Fireworks Display To Celebrate First Visit By Icon of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is expected to make its debut in St. Maarten on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. When the world’s largest cruise ship arrives in the port, passengers and crew members can expect an extra special welcome.
Upon arrival, there will be a traditional plaque exchange between officials from the Port St. Maarten Group (PSG) and Royal Caribbean International (RCI) executives to commemorate the ship’s inaugural visit, with government officials and key stakeholders also in attendance.
As Icon of the Seas prepares to set sail at the end of the day, the Caribbean port will bid the 250,800 gross-ton cruise ship adieu with a celebratory fireworks display. The show will take place close to the scheduled departure time, which guests can enjoy from their balcony cabins or on deck.

“The partnership between RCI and PSG demonstrates with the inaugural call of Icon that cruise opportunities continue to grow for the destination in 2024 with this visit being one of the highlights of more to come throughout the year,”read a statement from the Port St. Maarten Group.
In addition to Icon of the Seas, Celebrity Apex will also be in St. Maarten during the festivities on Tuesday, February 13. Celebrity Apex is the newest Edge-class ship and joined the Celebrity Cruises fleet in 2020 – a brand which is also owned by Royal Caribbean Group.
Icon of the Seas Makes Waves With More Inaugural Port Visits
Icon of the Seas will visit St. Maarten as part of its third official voyage – a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami on February 10, 2024. After making her debut in St. Maarten, the gigantic vessel will call on St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands on February 14 and CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island, on February 16.
Beginning with her maiden voyage on January 27, 2024, Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest ship will continue to alternate between 7-night cruises sailing through the Western and Eastern Caribbean, which will continue well into 2025.

Icon of the Seas’ debut in St. Maarten is one of many firsts the new ship has celebrated thus far – with more milestones likely to come as she settles into her career at sea in the coming months. So far, the ship has already made several other inaugural calls throughout the Caribbean.
On her maiden voyage, Icon of the Seas made her debut in St.Kitts on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Not only was this the vessel’s first visit to the Caribbean port, but it was also her first port call ever with paying passengers onboard.
The following day, January 31st, the Royal Caribbean ship made its inaugural call on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. The arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship was much anticipated and celebrated by locals – with the Virgin Islands also signing an agreement with Royal Caribbean to secure the island’s future in cruise tourism on the same day.
The Norwegian Government will amend environmental regulations in Svalbard, marking a significant turning point for Arctic cruise tourism.
To preserve the unique wilderness and wildlife of one of Europe’s largest untouched areas, the government is introducing measures limiting how cruise lines operate. These are measures that are set to redefine the future of visiting this remote destination.
New Measures Impact Arctic Cruising
The idea of sailing to the Arctic may not align with everyone’s vision of a perfect cruise. However, the Svalbard archipelago has become a significant attraction for nature lovers, offering a chance to explore one of Europe’s last untouched wilderness areas aboard expedition cruise ships.
While cruise ships that sail to the region are generally not the huge cruise ships we see elsewhere, the number of ships has been increasing significantly in the last couple of years. The expedition vessels carry, on average, between 50 and 500 guests, with the majority of ships carrying a maximum of 200 guests.
Longyearbyen, the most northern city in the world, located on Svalbard, will occasionally see larger cruise ships arriving, although these do not typically sail to environmentally fragile areas.
The introduction of stringent measures from January 1, 2025, includes restrictions on the number of guests allowed ashore and limitations on ship sizes that are expected to drastically alter the Arctic cruising experience.
Under the new regulations, cruise ships visiting Svalbard will now be limited to 200 guests in protected areas, a measure designed to minimize human impact on the fragile environment.

Furthermore, the viewing opportunities for iconic Arctic wildlife such as walruses will be significantly reduced. Regulations now mandate a distance of at least 150 meters from these animals, ensuring their undisturbed habitat but limiting close encounters for guests.
Similarly, the requirement mandates that ships maintain a 5-knot speed limit within 500 meters of land outside bird cliffs. This regulation is enforced during the sensitive period from April 1 to August 31. As a result, it restricts the possibilities for zodiacs to approach bird sites and simultaneously conduct scenic cruising around the area.
The ban on breaking fast ice restricts ships with ice class from entering areas with fast ice, which in turn will protect the habitat of seals, polar bears, and walruses, which use the ice for resting, breeding, and as a platform for hunting.
Breaking fast ice can also accelerate melting by increasing the amount of open water, which absorbs more sunlight than ice. This absorption, while minimal, leads to higher water temperatures and can contribute to the global trend of ice melt, further exacerbating the effects of climate change.
Preserving Svalbard’s Wilderness
The new regulations present both challenges and opportunities for the cruise industry and its guests. While the limitations may reduce the flexibility and scope of Arctic cruises, they also encourage a more sustainable and respectful approach to exploring one of the planet’s last wilderness frontiers.
Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, told High North News:“Climate change together with increased activity has resulted in great pressure on the vulnerable Arctic wildlife and nature in Svalbard. We are now tightening the environmental regulations in Svalbard to strengthen the protection of flora and fauna.”

Contrary to the perception that cruise operators venturing to Svalbard might primarily cause disturbances, their contribution has been significantly positive.
Over the years, companies like Oceanwide Expeditions from the Netherlands and Quark Expeditions from Canada, among others, have implemented environmental protection initiatives. These programs have played a pivotal role in establishing many of the current rules and regulations.
The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators has expressed concerns regarding the recent regulations affecting cruise activities in Svalbard.
The organization said it is disappointed with the policy-making process and the stringent measures adopted, which they believe will significantly impact operations and strain the areas still available for shore landings.
Despite a comprehensive consultation process and the industry’s efforts to offer solutions to protect Svalbard’s wildlife and wilderness, the association finds the new restrictions challenging.
However, the requirement for ships to sail with fewer guests or the outright prohibition of larger vessels in certain areas could lead to a more exclusive and potentially enriching experience for those who visit. This shift may also encourage the development of smaller, more eco-friendly ships designed specifically for sensitive environments like Svalbard.
A passenger aboard Norwegian Star sailing at the southern tip of South America with scenic viewing in Antarctica is posting social media videos about the change in the ship’s itinerary, wondering about unclear information from Norwegian Cruise Line and why the ship’s destinations have been changed without explanation from the cruise line.
Viral Videos Seeking Explanation From Cruise Line
A woman currently aboard Norwegian Star has claimed the cruise line altered the once-in-a-lifetime itinerary and is seeking an explanation from Norwegian Cruise Line.
The woman’s name has not been revealed, but she is posting on TikTok under username ruinedvacation, with just a few videos related to her current cruise. Between her first two videos detailing her concerns, she has amassed more than 3.1 million views as others tune in to the dramatic situation.
“Our ship is not going to Antarctica. They secretively changed the name of this cruise yesterday,”the woman said, referencing the description of the cruise on the cruise line’s app in a video posted on February 9, 2024.
She claims to have spoken to Guest Services onboard and learned that the ship’s itinerary was changed for “operational reasons” by Norwegian Cruise Line headquarters in Miami.
“We feel we’re being cheated, being scammed,”she said.“Everyone on this ship has paid a lot of money to cruise to Antarctica, not to do a round trip South America at sea.”
Norwegian Star Itinerary
Norwegian Star is currently sailing a 14-night cruise roundtrip from Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the trip, calls to ports in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, the Shetland Islands, and the Falkland Islands all add up to an amazing getaway.
What is not amazing passengers, including the woman posting the videos, is the change in the ship’s planned scenic cruising. As has been done for several of Norwegian Star‘s Antarctic itineraries this season, ports of call have been shifted and likewise, the ship’s scenic cruising locations have also been altered.
The video shows a large crowd gathered in the ship’s lobby near the guest services desk, with security in the crowd seeking to keep everyone calm.
“We are being dismissed, ignored, refused answers,”the woman said.“We’ve paid too much money, we’re too smart, and we’re too angry to just order another cocktail and sit down and accept the fact that our money has vanished into Norwegian Cruise Line’s pockets.”
In a follow up video, the woman shares an update with more explanation about the ship’s change of itinerary, acknowledging that crew members did eventually speak with the crowd to explain the itinerary change decision.
“The operational decision made by Miami head office and forced upon this ship is that this ship, the Norwegian Star, has a ‘go slow’ order,”she said.“They are not allowed to travel as fast as they normally would. That’s all we know. There was no explanation as to why there was a go slow order.”
An email was apparently sent to guests advising them of the change, and a notice was available at luggage check-in when the cruise began, but the woman claims that “hundreds” of people never received those notifications. The woman also claims there have been no explanatory announcements from the ship’s captain addressing the situation.
Is Norwegian Star Visiting Antarctica?
Originally, the ship was to have sailed through Paradise Bay – a stunning cove adjacent to Antarctica’s mainland. Instead, that scenic cruising has been removed from the itinerary, and the ship will instead offer Antarctic viewing near Elephant Island – 350 miles (560 kilometers) northeast of Paradise Bay, and 150 miles (241 km) from the continent’s mainland.
It must be noted that Norwegian Star had never planned to have an actual landing on Antarctica’s mainland, and travelers were never to have been able to set foot on the continent.

Furthermore, Elephant Island, which the ship is visiting for scenic cruising, is a geographic part of Antarctica administered by the Antarctic Treaty. While it is not the continent’s mainland, it very much is part of Antarctica.
“The Guest agrees that the [cruise line] has the sole discretion and liberty to direct the movements of the vessel, including the rights to deviate from the purchased voyage or the normal course for any purpose,”the contract reads.
This includes the right to “cancel any scheduled call at any port for any reason and at any time before, during or after sailing of the vessel.”
Cruise lines frequently change itineraries, sailing routes, port visit times, and other parts of the cruise vacation schedule for a variety of reasons, which may include weather, ship operations, port congestion, environmental regulations, and other factors. While it can certainly be disappointing to travelers, such changes are not uncommon and are part of the risk of booking a cruise itinerary.
Even more questions have arisen about the popular cruising ducks phenomenon, and Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has tried his best to outline Carnival’s position on the trend. This follows other rumors and discussion on cruising ducks and what they mean to passengers onboard Carnival cruise ships.
No Soliciting Permitted With Cruising Ducks
The most recent question brought up about cruise ducks – the small toys hidden as a guest-led scavenger hunt onboard cruise ships – is whether or not it is acceptable to attach business cards to the ducks as a form of advertising for when they are found by other passengers.
A Carnival cruise guest recently questioned John Heald about the practice, wondering why it isn’t permitted.
“Why can’t we put business cards with the ducks we hide on every cruise? Our cards read ‘You are in LUCK! You Found a DUCK – Keep or Hide – You Decide!’ This is on our business card with details for our business,”the guest explained.“Where is the harm in this? Why does every cruise line but yours allow for us to give the gift of laughter with the ducks we hide and get no return for doing this?”
Heald noted that he has received similar questions several times via his popular Facebook page, and outlined Carnival Cruise Line’s response.
“To be honest, I don’t know if we really have time to police this and in fact, let’s be honest, we don’t,”Heald said.“The reason I said no is because we don’t allow any kind of solicitation of any sort. And isn’t attaching your business card to a duck solicitation?”
The Original Cruising Duck! (Photo Credit: Cruising Ducks Original)
While cruise ducks are not an official Carnival Cruise Line activity organized by the Fun Squad, the ship’s cruise director, or the entertainment staff onboard, they are not prohibited or discouraged as Disney Cruise Line does.
Attaching business cards to the ducks, however, may one day be an issue the cruise line could step up on. While Head acknowledges that enforcing a “no business cards” guideline would be very challenging, it could indeed be considered solicitation.
Passenger Reaction
Heald asks for other guests’ reactions to the idea of attaching a business card to a cruise duck. Many people responded that they’d simply throw the card away, perhaps taking note of the business as one not to frequent for such an obvious attempt to capitalize on a fun activity for personal profit.
Carnival Cruise Ship and Cruising Duck
Various responding comments include:
“If I found a duck with a business card, I would be more likely to NOT want to call that business for taking advantage of the situation.”
“I’m sure I wouldn’t frequent a business that did that. It’s in very poor taste.”
“A business card on a duck would be a definite turn off from ever going to that business.”
“A cruise is for pleasure and relaxation. No one wants to have someone pushing their business.”
Many other commenters noted that adding a business card or other solicitation to a cruise duck seems tacky or desperate. It may also simply be useless, as cruise travelers often come from many different locations and may not be able to visit a particular business unless it is strictly online.
Some travelers noted that if business cards are permitted on cruise ducks, then other forms of solicitation might soon be requested as well. For example, travelers might want to advertise their business with stateroom door decorations, or bring a suitcase of promotional products to give away or sell onboard, or bring forms for other travelers to use to place orders.

Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked on three upcoming sailings of Carnival Horizon to alert them to a destination change when visiting Jamaica.
Rather than calling at Ocho Rios as originally planned, the ship will now be visiting Falmouth. This will impact some shore tours, but overall, the impact to each itinerary is expected to be minimal.
Carnival Horizon Itinerary Changes
Guests booked on the next three Western Caribbean sailings of Carnival Horizon will not be visiting Ocho Rios, Jamaica as originally planned. The cruise line has notified guests that the ship will instead be docking at Falmouth, which is 38 miles (61 kilometers) further west along the island’s northern coast.
“We have made some temporary docking arrangements when your cruise visits Jamaica while repairs are completed on the pier in Ocho Rios,”the email notification explained.“The alternative call into Falmouth is nearby and ensures minimal impact to your experience and our arrival and departure times remain the same.”
Carnival Magic Damage and Pier in Ocho Rios
The essential repairs followed last week’s rough weather when part of the pier in Ocho Rios collapsed, causing Carnival Magic to impact the damaged section. The chaotic situation involved Carnival Magic temporarily heading out to sea to avoid further damage until arrangements could be made to reunite all passengers with the ship when the weather calmed.
Three upcoming voyages for Carnival Horizon are now adjusted to Falmouth rather than Ocho Rios – the ship’s February 11, February 25, and March 10 departures. Each of those sailings is a 6-night Western Caribbean itinerary that will also be visiting George Town, Grand Cayman as well as Cozumel, Mexico.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica (Photo Credit: Nazar Skladanyi)
While Carnival Horizon won’t be able to visit Ocho Rios, the time in Jamaica remains the same, with the port of call visit planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each sailing.
The 133,600-gross-ton, Vista-class Carnival Horizon can welcome 3,960 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,977 passengers when fully booked. The ship is homeported year-round from Miami, offering alternating Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean cruises.
Shore Tour Adjustments
Because Ocho Rios and Falmouth are not too far apart, Carnival Cruise Line is able to preserve most of the shore tour options. This means different excursions will remain the same, even though the ship will be visiting Falmouth instead.
“Our shore excursions team is in touch with local tour operator partners and have confirmed that except for a few packages, we will be able to keep tours that were purchased for Ocho Rios,”the email said.
Tours to Montego Bay – which is an additional 23 miles (37 kilometers) west on Jamaica’s northern coast, are also able to be preserved.

Tour times or durations will likely be adjusted, but booked guests will be informed of any changes, including any excursions that cannot be kept intact, once they board.
The shore excursions team is also actively working to put together additional options for both Falmouth and Montego Bay that will be available for purchase online before sailing or at the Carnival Adventures desk onboard on the port side of Deck 3, adjacent to the Horizon Atrium.
Will Other Cruises Be Impacted?
At this time, it is only three Carnival Horizon cruises that are impacted by this itinerary adjustment. It is possible, however, that other future cruises may also need adjustment if the pier repairs take longer than anticipated.
No other Carnival cruise ships are scheduled to visit Ocho Rios through mid-March, though Carnival Sunrise is planned to be in port on March 20, and Carnival Horizon again on March 26. Both ships will also be visiting the port of call twice in April.
It should be noted that Carnival Magic will not be visiting Ocho Rios again in 2024, so that ship’s itineraries are not impacted by the incident it was involved in with the pier’s initial damage.
Other cruise lines also have visits planned for Ocho Rios in the coming weeks, including vessels from MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, and P&O Cruises. Because the port can accommodate multiple ships, however, not all cruises will be impacted by the temporary loss of dock availability.
Nevertheless, booked passengers will want to stay in close contact with their cruise line for any possible itinerary adjustments so they can revise their travel plans if necessary.
When deciding what to pack for your cruise, vacationers are often surprised at the type of items to take compared to other types of travel, especially for rookie cruisers. Some of the more unusual items include sealable plastic bags, outlet adapters, magnetic hooks, and even an over-the-door shoe organizer! These and other recommendations will protect your personal belongings, keep your tech running, and maximize your cabin space.
Below are some of our favorite items, hacks, and tips for making your voyage comfortable.
When it’s time to decide which tech items to pack on your cruise, we often think we must take it all. Keeping in mind that luggage and cabin space can be limited, here are our suggestions on the ‘must-have’ gadgets.
Newer smartphones have excellent cameras that will capture all your cruise vacation memories – suitable for framing later. Remember to pack the charger. And, if you are traveling with kids or want to get in a bit of work while you are away, then a small laptop or tablet should make the voyage with you. Bring a list of your passwords!
Other items to help keep the tech going are headphones and an outlet adapter. The former is helpful when someone wants to watch a movie or listen to their own music. And for the latter, cruise ship cabins are notorious for having only a small number of outlets.
Shop online for an inexpensive adapter, and keep in mind that it should not have a surge protector. These types of adapters are not allowed on board a ship. Also, the portable (external) chargers are quite handy.

More plug-in items that will make your cabin more comfortable include a small-size fan (the folding types are great space savers) and a tiny nightlight or two. The fan is good for circulating a bit of air and ‘white noise’ for sleeping. The nightlights will help you safely navigate the cabin spaces in the dark.
This last suggestion will be appreciated by your cabin mates if you put one in the bathroom. The bathroom light switch is usually in the main cabin, so everyone gets a blast of light during nighttime visits to the loo.
In addition to the hardware items, plan ahead of time for some tech entertainment. Download e-books and/or movies (Netflix allows this) so that you can read and watch without the need for an internet connection. The latter can be quite costly and is often priced per device.
Additionally, consider using a VPN (virtual private network) service to browse the internet. This will offer a layer of protection for your passwords, credit cards and other critical information that public access Wi-Fi will not.
To Your Health
When packing medications for your cruise vacation, leave them in their original pharmacy bottles with the labels. Also, consider making a small first-aid kit with any over-the-counter medicines you might need.
Specific for a voyage at sea, pack seasickness remedies, Band-Aids, alcohol swabs, antibiotic cream, bug repellant spray or wristbands, a small bottle of hand sanitizer (these are located all over the ships, but it is convenient to have a pocket-size with you), cough drops, wet wipes and, of course, sunscreen.
A note about sunscreen: SPF 30 is currently the minimum recommended strength to protect your skin. Also, consider a waterproof variety for general use. If you are planning to snorkel while on your cruise, many tours now require that your sunscreen be eco-friendly. All these items may be available on the ship. However, they can be exorbitantly priced.
What to Wear
Most cruise lines today, like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and others, have a dress code that is ‘cruise casual.’ The days of tuxedos and fancy dresses are fading into a fashion of smart casual dresses for women and collared shirts and slacks for the men – good news for the goal of packing small and light! For luxury cruise lines, formalwear is still the fashion for evenings and special events.
After selecting your cruise line, destination and itinerary you will have a good idea of the specific types of clothing to pack for your cruise vacation. For example, at a sunny beach destination in the midst of summer, shorts, a lightweight pair of pants, a swimsuit, t-shirts and a couple of nice polos will do.
On a cruise to Alaska or other northern locations, plan for layers since it can be chilly at night and/or rain. The easiest way for everyone to mix and match wardrobes is to limit the number of pants and shorts and choose basic, neutral colors. Then, pack more shirts and tops for a fresh look each day.
For your feet, we recommend a good walking shoe for onshore, slip-resistant flip flops for on deck and one dressier (comfortable) shoe/ sandal for dinners. Our personal favorite ‘must-have’ footwear is a mesh water shoe. It slips on easily, has a grip sole, dries quickly and is perfect for water, beaches, trails and towns. Your outerwear should include a light rain jacket, no matter your destination; and, perhaps a warmer long sleeve shirt, jacket or hoodie.
Everyone should have a hat regardless of where or when you are taking a cruise. It is necessary sun protection. The wider the brim, the more sunburn you can prevent. (And, a warm winter hat for cold weather cruises – the wind is always blowing on the deck.) Also, every person should have a pair of sunglasses. Polarized UV sunnies are the best for good outdoor viewing and protection.
Bags and More Bags
This group of items is often overlooked when packing for a cruise – bags. Lots of activities on a cruise are water-related. And, this means that you will have lots of wet items, some of which you do not want to get wet. Ziploc bags in a variety of sizes are perfect for keeping your phone, passport, and wallet dry.
Or, consider purchasing a ‘dry pouch’ online, which is made specifically for these items. Larger baggies can be used at the end of your voyage to keep wet clothes separated from dry ones.
While onshore, what do you do with your valuables? Grab a waterproof dry bag online. Keep in mind when shopping that ‘water resistant’ is not the same as ‘waterproof.’ These will keep all your items (including your phone) safe and dry in a small carrying pouch.
Cruise On Bag
Consider pairing this with a small lightweight backpack for shore excursions. This backpack can also double as your carry-on if you are traveling to the port by airplane. Both items are also great to have poolside while on the ship. Also, fanny packs are back – and they are a great, hands-free way to carry your things.
If you are a fan of buying souvenirs, bring along a folding duffel-style bag and use this to collect all your purchases. (It is unlikely that they will fit in your suitcase on the way home!) Also, bring some type of laundry bag (scented kitchen trash bags work perfectly here) for dirty (wet) clothes until you can address them.
On a side note, wrinkle-release sprays, small bottles of Febreze, and travel-size washing liquids can save time and money when refreshing your clothing.
Notes on Currency
Simply stated, carry cash. This type of currency will be accepted at any and all establishments along your journey. And, if necessary, it is easily exchangeable (for a fee) for whatever the local currency is at your shore destinations. You will also want to have along a credit card and an ATM card. But, be advised that neither of these may ‘work’ for certain purchases at various stores and/or restaurants.
Cruise Currency (Photo Credit: Jaime Garcia M)
Also, the ATM machines on the ship charge (what many consider) a high fee for cash withdrawals; and, this will also be true for any foreign country ATMs on shore. So, the best plan is to have enough cash on hand for whatever you might need throughout your cruise vacation.
Nifty Items and Hacks for Your Cabin
One challenge on cruise vacations is the amount of space in the cabins. While most of your voyage will be spent in other areas of the ship or on shore excursions, it is nice to return in the evenings to a comfortable space. We have a few items, tips and hacks that are popular with folks who take lots of cruises each year.
Ask for Extra Hangers
After unpacking, put small luggage pieces into the larger ones and store them all under the bed. Ask your stateroom attendant for extra hangers, if needed. And, bring along a travel clothesline to solve the age-old question about how to dry your wet clothes without losing them off the balcony or filling up the bathroom every day.
Magnetic Hooks
The walls and ceilings of cruise ships are metal. This means that you can create extra places to hang things by using magnetic hooks. You can find them online for only a few dollars and they are perfect for hanging jackets, hats, bags, lanyards or anything else.
Magnetic Cabin Hooks
These can also be used to drape a ‘privacy curtain’ across sections of the room – a neat idea for siblings. They are available for differently weighted items. For the shower area, suction cup hooks will work since these walls are not metal.
Over-the-Door Show Organizer
One particularly popular (and unlikely) item that many cruisers use is an over-the-door shoe organizer. Now, this is not because they bring a dozen pairs of shoes! The multiple small see-through pockets are ideal for holding toiletries, medications, sunglasses, small electronics, chargers and any other small item. Counter surfaces in a ship’s cabin are also a premium. The organizer folds flats for packing, too.
Make it Your Own
Did you know that you can ‘redecorate’ your cabin? Once you get settled in, move the furniture around based on how you will be using the space. To make more floor space, for example, push the bed into the corner, if possible. However, make sure you check with your room steward first.
Carnival Cruise Line Stateroom (Photo Copyright: Cruise Hive)
Also, if there are small or large items that you will not be using, request that they be removed from your cabin. For example, if you are not someone who sits at the desk to use your laptop, ask that the chair be removed and use the space under the desk for shoes, luggage or your dirty clothes bag. You can also request that the mini-fridge be clearly of any food or drinks you will not be consuming.
Your Own Water Bottle
A refillable water bottle has become somewhat of a necessity on cruise ships. While there are plenty of bottles of water to buy onboard, this is an unnecessary expense and just adds additional plastic to the waste stream. The solution: your own water bottle.
Collapsing Tote bag
Again, there are multiple options to purchase online. Our favorites are the type that collapses and fit nicely in bags and totes when empty. They are convenient when moving around the ship and particularly so during shore excursions.
Towel Clips
While you need not bring towels on your cruise vacation, there is a related item that you will be glad you packed – towel clips. These are larger-size plastic spring clips used to keep your towel ‘attached’ to your deck or beach chair.
There are breezes on the ship. There are breezes on the beach. And, there is always a competition to keep the towels in place! Additionally, these clips can serve another purpose in your cabin. Use them to hold your curtains together (particularly useful for Alaska cruises when it is still light outside at midnight!).
Last Minute Check for These Important Items
In the midst of all the packing fun, be sure you have these important documents:
Cruise papers/digitized documents with everyone’s information
Passport, enhanced driver’s license or birth certificate – whichever is mentioned in your cruise line’s requirements
Vaccination certificate – if required
Your medical insurance card/information on additional travel insurance and list of medications you are currently taking
Payment methods
For convenience, a lanyard so that you can wear your ship keycard and other items around your neck
Finally, some cruisers find it useful to make lists and check off items once they are packed. This is particularly helpful when traveling with children. That way, everything you need to pack for your cruise vacation is sure to make it on the ship with you.
Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked aboard the February 24, 2024 departure for Carnival Jubilee that the ship’s departure will be later than typical to accommodate the vessel’s official naming ceremony.
The cruise line will be firm when enforcing guests’ cruise terminal arrival appointments, and all travelers are expected to abide by their chosen arrival window.
Carnival Jubilee Naming Ceremony Confirmed
The new Carnival Jubilee – sister ship to the wildly popular Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration – will be officially christened on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Cruise Terminal 25 at Port of Galveston. Because of the naming festivities, the ship’s regular embarkation will be later than typical, and guests are required to adhere to their arrival appointment windows.
Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests with a stern reminder about those arrival appointments, as well as the consequences of arriving early.
“You may have heard that Carnival Jubilee’s naming ceremony will be taking place Saturday, February 24,”the email confirmed.“To ensure a smooth experience for our guests and manage all the activities, embarkation will be a bit later than usual. Please DO NOT arrive prior to your Terminal Arrival Appointments as they will be STRICTLY ENFORCED.”
Guest experiences at different Carnival homeports in recent months have been varied, with some travelers reporting that arrival appointments are only general at best, and that arriving earlier than scheduled is a common practice.
Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship
This is not the cruise line’s policy, however, and all guests are expected to adhere to the time they selected to arrive to the terminal when checking in for their cruise.
“All guests who arrive outside their designated times will be asked to return,”the email said.
Typically, Carnival Jubilee departs Galveston at 4 p.m., but after the naming ceremony, the ship will not depart her Lone Star State homeport until 8 p.m., hence the later embarkation for booked guests.
Guests on the sailing that date are not attending the naming ceremony, which will be held onboard prior to embarkation for the next cruise.
Despite the later embarkation, there is no change in the ship’s itinerary and no delays are expected as she visits Roatan, Honduras as well as Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.
Timeline for Carnival Jubilee Naming
The naming festivities are planned for 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 24. Special guests, media representatives, and VIPs will begin boarding the ship at approximately 10:30 a.m., after the previous cruise has completed debarkation.
All attendees will enjoy a lunch in the ship’s larger main dining room, the Pacific Restaurant on Deck 6, aft, and there will be plenty of time to view public areas of the ship and enjoy her most popular features.
Gwen Stefani
While exact options available that day have not been disclosed, it is likely that some special staterooms may be open for tours, live music will be played, the Bolt rollercoaster may be running, and other activities could be available, as is customary when a new ship is christened. Special presentations may also be held throughout he afternoon.
One event that will be part of the festivities is announcing the winner of the special Carnival Jubilee Boots auction, a charity bidding event for a custom Carnival-themed pair of cowboy boots. After just over a week, the top bid for the boots is already up to $14,750. The auction will close on Tuesday, February 20.
Carnival Jubilee Arrives in Galveston (Photo Credit: Carnival Cruise Line)
The ship’s official naming ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Jubilee Theater with special entertainment, including an appearance by the ship’s newly announced godmother, Gwen Stefani. These ceremonies typically include remarks by cruise line executives, special religious blessings, and other notable moments before a bottle of champagne is broken over the ship’s hull.
Carnival Cruise Line VIPs who will be in attendance to christen Carnival Jubilee include Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, as well as Emeril Lagasse, the cruise line’s Chief Culinary Officer. Additional VIPs are sure to be onboard as well, including authorities from Port of Galveston and other local officials.
Carnival Vista has successfully completed her 30-day dry dock refreshment and upgrade, and is now making her way back across the Atlantic Ocean to her Port Canaveral homeport with a variety of upgrades and a whole new look.
What new features does the ship now offer, and when will she welcome guests again to show off her new spaces?
Carnival Vista Completes Dry Dock
The 133,500-gross-ton Carnival Vista, lead ship of Carnival Cruise Line’s Vista class, has completed her dry dock in Cadiz, Spain. The ship now sports the new red, white, and blue hull livery that first debuted on Mardi Gras in 2021, but it isn’t just the ship’s exterior that has been refreshed.
A variety of new upgrades and public spaces have been added to the ship, including the cruise line’s signature Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, which serves as a testament to Carnival Cruise Line’s commitment to honoring both veterans and active military personnel. The new bar is located starboard on Deck 4, in the location of what was formerly the SkyBox Sports Bar.
Additional new spaces include an all-new Effy Jewelry store port side on Deck 5, where the deliciously sugary Cherry on Top store used to be located. Cruisers with a sweet tooth don’t have to worry, however, Cherry on Top has been relocated to Deck 4 starboard side, next to the also new Carnival Adventures store.

The teens-only Club O2 has likewise been relocated to what was formerly the video arcade on Deck 6, while the video arcade has been moved to the former location of the Thrill Theater, a part of the Carnival Multiplex on Deck 6 that has now been removed.
The ship’s IMAX theater has been preserved, but the entrance is now on Deck 7. The ship will continue to offer amazing first-run movies and Hollywood blockbusters at the IMAX theater.
Carnival Vista Upgrade
Where the old Club O2 was located on Deck 4, the Vista Casino has been expanded with a non-smoking section, across from the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge. The rest of the casino has also been refreshed with a new layout and updated gaming options.
In addition, the ship has undergone general maintenance and refreshment, including cosmetic enhancements, such as refreshing the Lido Marketplace with a new look and layout.

For guests interested in capturing all their cruise memories, the Dreams Studio has been relocated from Deck 5 to Deck 3, but will still be offering stunning photography services.
Guests who are more adventurous will want to check out the updated miniature golf course on Deck 11 has been updated as well as the new Fun Yard that replaces the former outdoor playground.
Guest Staterooms Also Refreshed
It isn’t just the public areas of Carnival Vista that have been refreshed during the month-long refurbishment. All guest staterooms have been refreshed with any essential repairs, and a new automatic nightlight has been added to the bathroom of all staterooms, a great enhancement often requested by travelers.
Select staterooms have also received new updates for compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, improving accessibility for passengers with different physical needs. Public areas of the ship have also received ADA updates.
First Cruise Just Days Away
While Carnival Vista is now sailing a transatlantic cruise without passengers aboard as she returns to her Florida homeport, booked guests are eagerly awaiting her first post-drydock voyage.
The refreshed ship will welcome travelers aboard on Thursday, February 15 for a special 3-night Bahamas itinerary with a visit to Nassau and two days at sea to enjoy all the ship’s new features.

Following that one short cruise, Carnival Vista will remain homeported at Port Canaveral year-round, offering a mix of 6- and 8-night Eastern Caribbean and Southern Caribbean cruises.
The Eastern Caribbean sailings will visit Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays (depending on departure date), Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Amber Cove, depending on departure date and cruise length. The Southern Caribbean cruises will visit Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, and Grand Turk, also depending on departure date.
In July 2025, Carnival Vista will be one of the first ships to visit Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination on Grand Bahama Island, Celebration Key, which is part of both Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries.

Located a short distance from the coastline of Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, Port Royal offers cruise passengers an experience unlike any other. In its heyday, the port was even known as one of the world’s most notorious pirate haunts, which explains its historical title, “The Wickedest City on Earth.” Unsurprisingly, this distinct past has given the port a lasting and unique look and feel that will be a memorable part of any cruise vacation.

Visitors have a wealth of possibilities when deciding how they will enjoy their time in Kingston. This historical and bustling city can be a history buff’s playground, with plenty of 17th-century architecture, like the remains of Fort Charles and the tilted Giddy House, which was shifted to a 45-degree angle following a major earthquake in 1917.
Since Kingston’s core is just a short drive from Port Royal, many cruise visitors will take time to enjoy the city’s cultural experiences, like the Bob Marley Museum and the city’s famous Coronation Market. With countless restaurants, bars, and stores, you shouldn’t have any difficulty filling your time in Kingston.
Since it is arguably Jamaica’s busiest cruise port, Port Royal is also home to numerous reputable excursion companies. Enjoy horseback riding, hikes, ATV trips, and driving tours to some of Jamaica’s most iconic tourist stops. It’s mainly visited by smaller luxury lines.
4. Ocho Rios Cruise Port

While the town and beaches near the cruise port are ideal for those looking for a more relaxed experience, the lush greenery and stunning waterfalls surrounding the port are the real attractions. In fact, Ocho Rios actually means “Eight Rivers” in Spanish, so it is no surprise that the region offers rafting, waterfall hikes, and all kinds of other thrilling nature experiences.
If you have the pleasure of visiting Ocho Rios as part of your cruise itinerary, make sure you make the most of it. You will quickly realize why so many Jamaicans and foreign tourists choose the region as the destination for their vacations.
5. Port Antonio
Location: Northeastern Coast of Jamaica (approx. 126 miles east of Montego Bay cruise port)

Port Antonio is considered the least popular stop for cruise ships on our list, but it still offers plenty for those listed as a stop on their upcoming cruise itinerary. Numerous beaches and coves offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful afternoon, which can be a welcome opportunity to distance yourself from the crowds on board your ship.

Transportation to these iconic sites is fairly straightforward, with many local transport organizations working with visiting cruise lines to ensure that passengers are returned to their respective ships in time for departure.
If beaches aren’t your thing, there are more exciting excursion options, like river rafting and snorkeling, as well as historical sites you can visit, like the Georgian-era DeMontevin Lodge and Folly Point Lighthouse.
General Information for Visiting a Jamaican Cruise Port
No matter which of Jamaica’s cruise ports you visit, it’s important to ensure you know what you can expect. This is important for your safety and will help you enjoy a seamless and memorable experience.
Always exercise caution when visiting an unfamiliar area. While this is not unique to Jamaica, some areas of Jamaican cities can be dangerous for foreigners, especially after nightfall. Avoid getting into unlicensed vehicles while you are exploring the ports. Instead, stick to official transportation options or those provided by excursion organizers.
Petty crime, like pick-pocketing, can also be an issue in some more crowded areas. We would recommend being discreet and careful with valuables. Consider leaving valuable and expensive items, like jewelry and large amounts of cash, in a safe location on the ship, like your cabin safe.

You should also be aware that some street vendors will attempt to take advantage of tourists. Understand that you may be charged a higher price, so don’t be afraid to walk away if something seems more expensive than it should. You should also avoid being aggressive when negotiating prices; instead, be polite but firm.
Whether it is Jamaica or any other port of call, we recommend keeping your emergency contact information handy. This should include the contact information for the cruise line you are traveling with.
If you are booking an excursion, we recommend going with one partnered with your cruise line. Not only will this mean that they have been vetted for safety and authenticity, but the operators will be familiar with your cruise ship’s departure schedule so that they will get you back in time.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What currency do you need if you are visiting a Jamaican cruise port?
While the official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar, most of the major vendors will accept the major credit cards, like VISA and Mastercard.
For smaller purchases from local food vendors and souvenir stalls, there is a good chance they will accept American dollars, but it is not a guarantee. If you want to play it safe, it can be a good idea to take out some local currency beforehand, especially if you have a particular souvenir that you would like to purchase to remember your time in the country.
Can you drink the water in Jamaica?
To avoid any stomach issues, we would recommend sticking to bottled water while you are in Jamaica. You will also want to ensure that you are eating from reputable establishments with high sanitation and food storage standards.
Unfortunately, water treatment facilities in Jamaica are not up to the same standards as those in the United States, so the tap water is not drinkable. Even if you are in a restaurant, we advise paying extra for bottled water and other drinks.
What is Dunn’s River Falls and is it accessible from the main cruise ports?
Dunn’s River Falls is located just outside the town of Ocho Rios (approximately 10 miles away). The waterfalls offer a unique and stunning glimpse of Jamaica’s natural beauty, which has made them one of Jamaica’s top tourist attractions. As such, numerous providers offer shore excursions that transport cruise ship passengers to Dunn’s River Falls.
Given the fact that the falls are located so close to Ocho Rios, they are accessible to most of Jamaica’s main cruise ports, including Ocho Rios Cruise Port, Montego Bay, Port Antonio, and Falmouth Cruise Port. If you would like to visit the falls and experience their cascading waters and jungle backdrop, check with your cruise line to see if they partner with any local excursion providers.
Final Words
With stunning beaches, picture-perfect jungle backdrops, and exciting towns proudly displaying one of the world’s most unique cultures, Jamaica’s cruise ports are often one of the main highlights of a Caribbean cruise vacation.
No matter if you are visiting the busier Jamaican ports, like Ocho Rio, Montego Bay, or Port Royal, or one of the island’s quieter areas, like Port Antonio, make sure you take the time to take in everything Jamaica has to offer. Listen to live reggae music, enjoy some jerk chicken, and kick back with a rum cocktail. More importantly, have the type of experience you crave.
