Norwegian Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked on upcoming sailings that include visits to popular Mexican ports of call urging travelers to have a valid passport, for a variety of reasons.
While it is not yet required for US citizens to have a passport to cruise to Mexico, there are several scenarios where it would be very helpful to have one, just in case.
Norwegian Cruise Line Encouraging Passports
In an email sent to travel advisors and booked guests, Norwegian Cruise Line is strongly urging that all travelers have a valid passport if their cruise vacation includes a stop in Mexico, even if the sailing is a closed-loop cruise that begins and ends in the same US homeport.
“Norwegian Cruise Line strongly encourages all guests to obtain a valid passport for any cruise that calls to a Mexican port,”the email reads.
It is important to note that a valid passport is not required for US citizens on closed-loop cruises from US homeports. This email, however, notes a variety of scenarios that could happen to travelers in Mexico – or other port of call destinations – where a passport would be required.
For example, if travelers miss the all-aboard time for the ship while visiting Mexico and wish to rejoin their cruise ship at the next port of call, even if that next destination is still in Mexico, they will need to present a passport for that travel.
“In addition, the guest will be required to pay a visa fee, a possible fine, as well as cover the cost of transportation to the following port,”the email explains.“Furthermore, if the guest fails to present a passport, the guest must obtain permission from the Immigration department to travel to the next port of call without a passport.”
Similarly, if guests miss the ship’s departure from its US homeport and wish to join the vessel in a foreign port of call, a passport will be necessary to either leave or re-enter the US via air travel.

In the event of an emergency that requires guests to debark the ship at a foreign port of call, travelers will also need to present a passport to return to the US by air, as well as to complete the immigration process to properly disembark the vessel.
Ultimately, a valid passport can make any of these situations far easier and smoother. This can be critical for guests who find themselves in difficult circumstances after missing the ship or disembarking due to a medical emergency or other mitigating factors, situations that can already be immensely stressful and confusing.
These reminders and urging guests to obtain passports before cruise travel follow a several highly publicized incidents in recent months, such as two women injured in Cozumel and stranded without passports in September 2023. While that incident happened to Carnival cruise guests, it could easily happen to any cruise travelers.
Documentation Is Guests’ Responsibility
This is not the first time Norwegian Cruise Line has taken extra steps to ensure guests are aware of travel documentation requirements. In October 2023, at the close of the Alaska season, the cruise line reached out with a similar email to alert guests to documentation needs for repositioning cruises, even between two US homeports.
The cruise line also pointed out similar situations that could cause guests to miss the ship on their cruise, when a passport would be essential – illnesses, injuries, bad timing, etc.

Norwegian Cruise Line does especially note that it is travelers’ responsibility to ensure they have all proper documentation available prior to setting sail.
“As a reminder, it is your responsibility to obtain required visas and other documentation prior to sailing for all applicable countries you will visit during your voyage to avoid any chance of being denied boarding,”the email said.
All cruise travelers should confirm documentation requirements for their cruise in the weeks and months before sailing, including requirements at each port of call. Different countries can and do adjust their documentation requirements periodically, especially as technology evolves and fraudulent paperwork can be an increasing concern.
In light of safety concerns following a recent prison break and rising gang violence in Haiti, Royal Caribbean International has begun cancelling select shore tours at its private destination of Labadee. Impacted guests have received notification of various cancellations, and will be provided with full refunds for the now-cancelled tours.
Labadee Tours Being Cancelled
Guests looking forward to exciting excursions during their visits to Labadee, Haiti will have fewer options to choose from in the coming weeks as Royal Caribbean is beginning to cancel select tours for different sailing dates.
“Out of respect to our local communities surrounding Labadee, Haiti, and to ensure our guest and crew safety, we’re temporarily adjusting our tour offerings,”the notification email said.“We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this – your safety is our top priority.”
The now-cancelled tours include some jet ski options as well as kayaking tours. Some fishing tours are also affected, and it appears that any tour that departs from the immediate vicinity of the cruise port – whether for snorkeling, beach breaks, etc. – may be cancelled as well.
All sailings scheduled to call on Labadee are similarly impacted, including upcoming visits by Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and other vessels.
Full refunds are being provided for the now-cancelled tours, with the money to be returned to the original form of payment. It may take up to 14 business days to process the refund, though exact processing times will vary for different financial institutions.
What Tours Are Still Available?
There are still tours available for guests to enjoy exclusive activities on Labadee, including a “sip and paint” experience with the island’s signature rum cocktail, cabana rentals for the ultimate beach luxury, the 2,600-foot Dragon’s Breath Zipline, the Dragon’s Tail alpine coaster, and more. Exact offerings may vary depending on sailing date and when guests visit Labadee.

Guests can also enjoy nearby beaches, shopping in the Artisan’s Market and Artisan Village retail spaces, have a sip at the exclusive bars, enjoy the paved and color-coded walking trails, and more.
Of course, guests can also remain onboard their cruise ship, enjoying all the amenities Royal Caribbean vessels are known for – rock climbing walls, miniature golf, ice skating, the FlowRider surf simulator, waterslides, and more, depending on the ship.
Visits to Haiti Still a Go
At this time, Royal Caribbean International is not removing Labadee, Haiti from cruise itineraries, but the cruise line is keeping a close watch on local turmoil to ensure the safety of cruise guests and crew members.
“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area,”a recent statement from the cruise line read.“At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

It should be noted that the recent prison break – with as many as 4,000 criminals escaping from two prison facilities – is 128 miles (206 kilometers) from Labadee, which would take more than 6 hours to drive on the island’s road systems.
Furthermore, Labadee is a private, isolated community and a secure compound. Only cruise guests and necessary employees, including suppliers, are permitted to enter the destination. The cruise port is a gated facility and private security ensures limited access to the community.
Guests with cruises booked to the private destination should stay in close communication with Royal Caribbean in case of further shore tour cancellations in the coming weeks or if the situation changes and port visits need to be likewise adjusted.
Shipyard delays have dashed the hopes of passengers looking forward to setting sail on P&O Cruises’ Iona. Initially slated for refurbishment in March 2025, Iona’s overhaul has been pushed back to October 2025.
Iona Refurbishment Rescheduled
P&O Cruises announced delays in Iona’s refurbishment will cause a cancellation of two slated cruises in October 2025. In an email sent to passengers booked on Iona’s October 18, 2025, cruise to Spain and Portugal, P&O Cruises stated the cruise is “no longer possible.”
”We’re really sorry to inform you that your holiday departing 18 October 2025 is no longer going to be possible due to a necessary reschedule of Iona’s planned refit,” the email from P&O Cruises to passengers read.
P&O, which is owned by Carnival Corporation, continued to announce the bookings were cancelled, and passengers would receive a full refund. Those booked on Iona’s October 4, 2025, sailing received the same notice.
”We understand this news is disappointing and would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Iona, a 184,000-gross-ton, 5,200-passenger Excellence-class ship, debuted during the Pandemic in 2020. Delivered from Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, the ship’s inaugural cruise was delayed until 2021.

The first ship built by P&O Cruises in 20 years, Iona was the first LNG-powered British cruise ship and the largest built for the UK market. According to The Insider, Iona was scheduled to begin a warranty refit between March 13 and end April 1, 2025.
At this time, a gap still remains on the cruise line’s booking engine after the vessel’s return to Southampton at the end of a 12-night on March 13, 2025. It’s not clear if P&O will offer new cruises, now that the dry dock has been rescheduled.
Impacted P&O Iona Sailings
Iona’s October 4, 2025 cruise was meant to be a 14-night round trip voyage from Southampton, England, to Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands.
The ship’s October 18, 2025 sailing, also a roundtrip from Southampton, was scheduled to be a 7-night “Northern European City Escape.” This cruise would visit Hamburg, Germany; Rotterdam, Holland; and Zeebrugge, Belgium.
P&O has not cancelled Iona’s October 25, 2025, anticipating the completion of her refresh ahead of the 7-night “Spain and France” cruise. The first cruise post-refurbishment will visit Bilbao, La Coruna, and Vigo, Spain, and Cherbourg, France, as Iona sails roundtrip from Southampton.
While P&O Cruises did not rebook affected passengers on a later cruise or announce a reschedule of the two cancelled routes, it did reveal an incentive for passengers to rebook.
Along with the full refund, passengers will also receive £100 per person onboard credit on a newly booked cruise on P&O Cruises, capped at two passengers booked in the same cabin.
Although details about the delay have not been announced, P&O Cruises has two additional ships currently undergoing multi-million-pound updates.
The 2,388-passenger, 85,000-gross-ton Arcadia, and the 1,868-passenger, 76,152-gross-ton Aurora, are slated to be complete in November 2024 and April 2025, respectively. The delays to Iona’s refresh could be an indication that work on Arcadia and Aurora may be delayed.
MSC Cruises has reached out to guests booked on various sailings of MSC Seascape to alert them to an itinerary change in Jamaica. While the ship will still be visiting the delightful island nation, the port of call has been changed due to dock damage sustained during poor weather in February.
MSC Seascape Itinerary Changes
Guests booked on different sailings of the 170,400-gross-ton, Seaside EVO-class MSC Seascape have received notifications that their visit to Jamaica has been adjusted. The cruise ship will still visit Jamaica on each itinerary, but to a different destination than originally scheduled.
“Due to extensive pier damage caused by a recent incident involving another cruise ship at the port in Ocho Rios, Berth 2 will be closed for restoration work,”the email explains.
The damage the email is referring to is when Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Magic was docked on February 6, 2024. Rough weather that included strong swells and gusty winds caused pressure on the pier and it partially collapsed, forcing Carnival Magic to temporarily depart.
The damaged dock space has been closed since while repairs are underway. On days when Ocho Rios is fully booked, this can mean that not all scheduled ships may be able to be accommodated. Fortunately, MSC Cruises is making alternative arrangements for several MSC Seascape itineraries.
“Falmouth will replace this as a [port of call] on the same date as the originally scheduled stopover,”the email confirmed.

This means the rest of the ship’s itinerary is not impacted by the change so changes to guests’ overall plans are minimal, though some shore excursions may be affected. The exact changes, such as time in port, may also vary on different itineraries, and guests will be provided with additional details as necessary.
MSC Seascape is homeported year-round from Miami, offering a range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries. The ship can welcome 4,540 passengers at double occupancy, or as many as 5,877 guests when fully booked with all berths filled.
Differences Between the Ports
Falmouth and Ocho Rios offer many of the same amenities, including stunning natural beauty, beach breaks, watersports, local shopping, historic tours, and more.
While the two ports of call are roughly 45 miles (73 kilometers) apart – Falmouth is further west on the island’s northern coast – similar shore tours can be operated from both destinations. This includes trips to the stunning Dunn’s River Falls, river rafting trips, cave excursions, and other exciting tours.

This ensures that even though guests will not be visiting Ocho Rios, they will still have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Jamaica’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and colorful history however they like.
Will Other Cruises Be Impacted?
Ocho Rios and Falmouth are both popular ports of call, visited by a number of cruise lines. In addition to MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise line, ships from Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, TUI Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line regularly visit Ocho Rios.
In the meantime, Royal Caribbean International, Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Holland America Line regularly visit Falmouth. The switch from Ocho Rios to Falmouth may be a welcome change for experienced MSC Cruises travelers.

It is also possible that other cruise lines may adjust itineraries in similar ways while the dock repairs are underway in Ocho Rios, depending on individual ship sizes, sailing schedules, and available berth space. Different ports in Jamaica may be substituted as MSC Cruises is doing with MSC Seascape, or cruise lines might make other changes.
Completely different ports of call – such as an extra stop in the Bahamas or visits to the Cayman Islands or other destinations could be substituted for Ocho Rios, or ships may simply plan a day at sea instead of a port visit.
Cruise travelers with any sailings booked that include Ocho Rios in the next few weeks will want to stay in touch with their cruise line in case of itinerary adjustments or changes, especially as this will impact any tour arrangements passengers may have made. While cruise lines will automatically adapt shore tours booked through the cruise line, guests will need to adjust any independent tours on their own.
Just days after announcing stricter enforcement of mobility scooter guidelines onboard, Carnival Cruise Line has faced tremendous backlash and misunderstanding.
The cruise line has continued to offer clarifications about which scooters are permitted onboard and why, with Brand Ambassador John Heald reaching out to address the issue.
Carnival Cruise Line Mobility Scooter Policies to Be Enforced
Carnival Cruise Line recently notified guests sailing aboard Mardi Gras of greater enforcement of the cruise line’s mobility scooter policies. Emails have been sent to guests booked in accessible cabins to alert them to the policies – most importantly, that scooters must be the correct size to safely fit in the stateroom, and no scooters may be stored in corridors or public areas.
Part of the policy is that scooters will be measured at cruise terminal check-in, and if they cannot be accommodated, guests will be denied boarding. Alternatively, impacted guests could set sail without a scooter if possible, rebook on a different sailing with an accessible stateroom, or rent an appropriately-sized scooter at the terminal.
Startled reactions from guests have created a backlash with misunderstandings and miscommunications, with rumors swirling that Carnival Cruise Line will no longer permit guests to bring scooters aboard at all, which is completely false. This led to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s popular Brand Ambassador, offering greater clarification.
“Number one, we just don’t want people anymore to please leave their mobility scooter outside of the cabin,”Heald said of the first point.“You cannot do that, it blocks other people in case of an evacuation.”
He also noted how difficult it is for cabin attendants to move their cleaning carts down corridors if scooters are parked in the way. Similarly, other scooter users could have difficulty moving down corridors to reach their staterooms around parked devices.
Rumors Debunked
There are two rumors Heald specifically noted. The first was the idea that guests would only be permitted to bring collapsible or foldable scooters onboard Carnival ships.
“No you don’t, absolutely not,”Heald said.“It just has to fit through the door.”
“It’s really simple, please don’t bring a big, massive mobility scooter onboard. Please don’t park any sized mobility scooter outside of your cabin door. And please, if you have any questions, or if you need something, know that all the crew are going to take care of you.”
Heald also answered questions about scooters parked only momentarily in corridors, such as if guests prefer to visit their own stateroom for a bathroom break or to pick something up. For guests who can walk a few steps, it is often faster and simpler to leave a scooter in the corridor for a few minutes than to maneuver it in and out of the stateroom.
“Listen, if you have to leave it outside your door for 30 seconds, a minute, two minutes, three minutes, of course you can do that,”Heald confirmed.“But any longer than that it needs to go inside the cabin.”
Strollers Also Impacted
Guests have also commented that oversized strollers and wagons are often parked in corridors or left in public areas, such as near elevator banks where stateroom corridors open up. Heald said that they will also be subject to the same policies are are not permitted to be left outside guests’ cabins.
“We’re going to be doing the same,”Heald said.“We just can’t have things left outside the cabin doors. Of course you can bring the strollers on the ship with the children and everything, but you can’t leave those … outside of the cabin door.”
In total, Heald received more than 4,500 comments about the issue, some of which were very negative and derogatory, but he continues to address guests’ concerns with his signature dry British wit and compassion for the needs of all travelers.
“I don’t want to make this a bigger thing than it is,”he concluded.“The decision has been made, it’s been for some a long time coming. Those are the rules.”
Guests considering booking a Carnival cruise will want to review the cruise line’s official policies on personal mobility devices, which covers both wheelchairs and scooters. Size requirements, types of accessible staterooms, permitted battery types, and other details are all explained in detail, including which cruise ports require water shuttles and which have accessible water shuttles.
With Carnival Luminosa just three weeks away from finishing her Australia season and relocating to Alaska, Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked on the 30-night sailing with guidelines for the unique cruise and an update on the ship’s planned call to Guam.
Because the cruise line’s Australia division has some different onboard regulations than for cruises in other parts of the world, it is important that travelers be aware of what to expect onboard so they are prepared to follow all sailing protocols.
Carnival Luminosa Preparing for Transpacific Repositioning
Carnival Luminosa is popular in Australia, offering a variety of getaways from Brisbane and visiting top destinations such as New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Airlie Beach, Cairns, Fiji, and more. The ship’s Australian season is nearly over, however, and – no fooling – on April 1, 2024 she will depart on a 30-night, one-way repositioning to Seattle.
Along the way, the ship will make amazing visits to destinations such as Guam, Japan, and Alaska – a relatively rare Asian itinerary that is highly sought after for cruise travelers.
Ahead of the sailing, Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to booked guests to alert them to some challenges in Guam – the very first port of call, scheduled for Monday, April 8 – as well as onboard policies for the duration of the cruise.
Challenges for Sightseeing in Guam
Guam is a bucket-list destination for cruise travelers looking for unique places to visit. Carnival wants to be sure that all passengers are aware of some possible challenges when visiting the port, however.
Most notably, the Guam cruise port – where Carnival Luminosa will be docked – is about two miles from the town. Complimentary shuttles will be available, but may be challenging for guests with mobility difficulties.
“Regrettably, the shuttles are not fully accessible, and it will be necessary for guests with mobility limitations to take steps to get on and off,”the notification read.“Additionally, any mobility device must be collapsible in order to be brought aboard a shuttle.”
This follows Carnival Cruise Line’s recent crackdown on oversized mobility scooters. While travelers are welcome to bring mobility scooters onboard, all scooters must fit safely within guests’ staterooms and may not be left parked in corridors or public areas.

The cruise line is simply ensuring that guests are aware of the policy so there are no unpleasant surprises when visiting Guam, if larger scooters are not able to fit on shuttles from the dock.
Furthermore, no Carnival shore excursions are available in Guam. Guests will be able to debark to explore on their own, but there will be no official tours. The ship is scheduled to be in port in Guam from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“In the event you will be staying on board when we visit Guam, our team will have activities and entertainment for you to enjoy,”the email said.
Cruise Paperwork Requirements
The lengthy email from Carnival Cruise Line also addressed what paperwork guests need for sailing. It’s not like some cruises, where a guest can just use their valid Permanent Resident Card.
“All guests (including infants) must carry a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends,”the email explained.
Furthermore, specific visa requirements for Japan will vary depending on each guest’s nationality. The ship has five port stops in Japan: Okinawa, Hiroshima, Yokohama, Aomori City, and Sapporo-Otaru. This is an amazing section of the itinerary and a fantastic way for travelers to explore Japan.
Other visas and ETSA documentation may also be necessary for travelers to enter the US – which is when the ship reaches the US territory of Guam. It is critical that travelers are aware of all requirements and secure all necessary paperwork before embarkation.
“Please note that a printed copy of the ESTA approval or US visa will be required for immigration clearance for our visit to Guam,”the email stated.
“While we will do our best to provide you with as much information as possible, guests are responsible for complying with all travel and documentation requirements,”the email stated.“Unfortunately, guests who do not have the required documentation will not be able to sail and no compensation will be provided.”
Onboard Policies
As the 2,260-passenger Carnival Luminosa will be transitioning from an Australian sailing to a US sailing on this transpacific cruise, it can be challenging to know what onboard protocols apply. The email also covered key points of concern to guests.
For example, the onboard smoking policy from the time the ship enters international waters will be the same as the US smoking policy, with designated areas for smoking onboard. This includes cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vaping.
The onboard drinking age will be 21 years old for the entire sailing, despite the fact that the legal drinking age in Australia is 18. Guests should be prepared with US currency onboard, either cash or credit, for transactions and tipping as desired.
The onboard recommended gratuities will also align with US rates at $16 for standard staterooms and $18 for suites per guest, per day, and can be adjusted at guests’ discretion.
With the lengthy email, Carnival Cruise Line is hoping all passengers are prepared for what is sure to be an amazing Carnival Journeys cruise and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone aboard.
While most people who work and vacation on cruise ships are there to have a good time, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of one’s surroundings. One TikToker has plenty of tips to keep cruisers safe, especially for women and solo travelers.
How To Stay Safe On Cruise Ships
Cruising is generally one of the safest forms of travel. With surveillance cameras in most public spaces and professional security teams onboard, cruise lines actively work to keep their guests safe. Even so, it still doesn’t mean passengers should let their guard down completely.
Luckily, Victoria from @victorias.wayon TikTok posts tips to keep travelers safe. While her advice is primarily targeted at the women and solo travelers among her 155.8K followers, it can be useful for anyone who feels the need to take extra precautions – both on land and at sea.
One of her most popular cruise safety videos, which was posted on February 17, 2024, has been viewed nearly 29 million times. In the video, which was filmed on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Victoria takes her followers through her nighttime routine before going to bed.
First, the influencer makes sure no unwanted visitors can break in while she’s sleeping. In addition to putting the “do not disturb” sign out and locking the door, she also closes the peep hole and makes a back-up lock uses hangers and towels from her stateroom.
She then installs a doorstop alarm, a wireless security camera, and pushes a heavy piece of furniture against the door. After a final check of her surroundings from her cabin’s balcony, Victoria closes the curtains with clips for extra security before calling it a night.
Earlier in 2024, Victoria also went viral for sharing her safety routine to keep unwanted guests out of her cruise cabin on a newer MSC cruise ship, earning over 18 million views.
That said, some think that Victoria’s methods are a bit too over-the-top, often questioning how quickly she could exit her cabin if there was an emergency.
“No Way. If I have to get out quickly in an emergency this would be horrible,” wrote one TikToker.
“I work on a cruise ship and have never felt safer when I sleep. 24 hour security 24/7 versus when I’m home alone,” commented another.
Ultimately, Victoria’s tips come down to staying aware of one’s surroundings, which is important to do no matter how many precautions guests feel they need to take.
Arrest Made On Symphony of the Seas
On March 2, 2024, Victoria posted a video of how she stayed safe on the last night of her cruise onboard Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. The video, which has been viewed over 5 million times in less than a week, was posted one day before a shocking arrest was made onboard the 5,518-passenger Oasis-class ship.
Considering the timing of Victoria’s video, it’s quite likely she was onboard the same 8-Night Southern Caribbean sailing in which Mirasol was apprehended after another passenger found one of his alleged hidden cameras in her stateroom.
It also makes the topic of her video, which is all about how to keep unwanted visitors out of your cruise cabin, extra relevant.
In the video, the influencer again shows how she barricades her door, but adds a new tip. She puts a coin on the door handle so she can quickly see if someone opened the door without her knowledge.
She also shares the safety devices she keeps closeby on her bedside table in case someone were to break in, such as a flashlight, small safety alarm, and pepper spray.
Even more recently, Victoria posted another video with more cruise safety advice on Thursday, March 7, 2024. In the few days since the video was shared, it has been viewed almost 30,000 times.
The video highlights little details about staying safe that excited travelers might forget about, such as storing money and valuables in the typically provided safe.
Even though housekeepers likely did a thorough cleaning, Victoria also does her own quick wipe down of commonly used surfaces and appliances, such as door handles and the phone.
In a slightly darker turn, the TikToker also places her thumbprint on the wall, leaving a small smudge. She does this in order to leave a piece of her DNA behind for investigators to find in the unlikely event she was kidnapped, or something similar occurred.
While the recent arrest onboard Symphony of the Seas shows that anything can happen anywhere, incidents like that are few and far between on cruise ships. As spring draws closer and daylight hours get longer, Carnival Corporation & plc has unveiled a new solar park at Amber Cove that has enough capacity to supply most of the cruise center’s energy needs.
This is a great step toward further environmental sustainability and highlights the company’s commitment to preserving the natural beauty of its destinations.
New Solar Park at Amber Cove
Carnival celebrated the ribbon cutting for its new solar park at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic on Friday, March 8, 2024 – less than two weeks before the spring equinox.
The park features more than 1,800 solar panels that will ultimately supply 80% of the energy used at the 25-acre cruise port, and is the first installation of its kind with such close ties to major cruise lines.
This will dramatically reduce the port’s reliance on fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants and helping preserve the natural beauty of the region, which all guests enjoy when they visit the richly vibrant port of call.
“As we bring guests to enjoy the beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic, we also take our environmental stewardship here and everywhere we visit very seriously,”said Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line president.“With this new solar park in Amber Cove, we are furthering our commitment to sustainability at our destinations by focusing on renewable energy sources to power the vast majority of the port’s needs.”
Also in attendance for the momentous occasion were other local and industry officials as well as Carnival executives.

“On behalf of the Government, we celebrate this achievement, which makes Amber Cove the first cruise terminal in the country with a project of this scale,”said Joel Santos, minister of the presidency of the Dominican Republic.“This project will undoubtedly contribute to the production of clean energy and environmental sustainability in Puerto Plata, the first tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.”
The 133,596-gross-ton, Vista-class Carnival Horizon was visiting Amber Cove on Friday, but the event was not a public occasion. Carnival Vista, Carnival Celebration, and Mardi Gras will all be visiting the popular destination in the next few days, and will be the first vessels to be enjoying the cleaner power for lighting, sound systems, and overall operations.
How Much Energy Will Be Saved?
When the full solar park is operating at peak efficiency and the port is bustling, overall greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by approximately 1,000 tons per year. This is the equivalent to planting more than 30,000 trees.

Since it first opened in 2015, Amber Cove has welcomed more than 3.6 million guests. The opening of the solar park at Amber Cove is just the latest in sustainability initiatives Carnival Corporation & plc has implemented.
Many behind-the-scenes steps have been taken, for example, to upgrade the company’s cruise ships across the various cruise lines so they can operate more efficiently. This includes upgrades in lighting and HVAC systems onboard, hull designs and coatings that reduce friction, using shoreside power where possible, and committing to liquefied natural gas vessels.
Onboard waste has also been addressed in recent years with the elimination of plastic straws and other single-use plastics, steps taken to reduce food waste, and other small measures that add up to tremendous efforts.
