Teenager Causes Family Rift, Thinks She’s “Too Cool” For Disney

As a self-identified Disney adult, I truly cannot imagine how anyone can think they are too old or too cool for Disney Cruise Line.

During my time as a Disneyland cast member, it was always drilled into us to create magic for every member of the family – whether they were two or 92!

But one teenage girl has the opposite opinion from me, and now her mother is worried that her daughter will ruin the family’s upcoming Disney cruise.

“We booked this trip almost a year ago. My daughter is now throwing a big fit about our upcoming cruise because she’s too old and too cool to be seen near anything Disney,” the mother posted on Reddit in the hopes of receiving advice.

In addition, her daughter had also developed a sudden disgust for sharing a cruise cabin with the rest of the family and a newfound hatred for swimming – which was an activity she had previously enjoyed.

The mother continued: “She’s super annoyed and I’m worried she’s going to try and ruin this trip for her siblings. She’s already loudly mentioning how it’s for babies and how only babies can enjoy a Disney cruise.”

The advice was mixed among the hundreds of cruise fans who responded. Some said there was no winning against teenage angst and if the daughter didn’t enjoy the trip, it would be her own fault.

They also pointed out that as a teen, the daughter could safely explore the ship on her own if her mood was ruining the fun for the rest of the family.

“Let her chart her own course…I bet within just a few minutes on that ship, she’ll be having a great time. If she’s not, she’ll only have herself to blame. But encouraging her to do her own thing, you don’t have to worry about her unduly influencing her siblings’ enjoyment,” one person suggested.

Minors can only go so far when confined to a ship and cruising is quite safe – with prevalent surveillance and onboard security teams – so many parents do let their kids or teens roam free on sea days.

That said, they usually put certain boundaries in place, such as by setting curfews, having their kids update on their locations via a whiteboard or messaging, or always coming together in the evenings for dinner.

Fun For All Ages Onboard

While separating from their teen is one option the family has if she doesn’t shake her bad attitude, others were more optimistic and reassured the mother that the Disney magic will kick in as soon as the family embarks

Some also suggested that the parents should send their daughter videos or information about the entertainment options onboard and in the ports of call – letting her have some say in the activities and visually see that there is plenty for her to do.

“Disney has their magic way that will likely take over once you board…I wouldn’t make a big deal when she accepts it will be fun, she likely doesn’t want to hear I told you so,” a high school teacher replied.

Another parent spoke to their own experience with their teenage son: “We went on a Disney cruise in 2019 aboard the Fantasy. Our oldest was 16 at the time. Not only did he have a blast, but we barely saw him. He basically had the run of the ship and loved going to Vibe (the older kids club).”

My family sailed with Disney multiple times when I was a teenager, and I always made friends by the end of the second day. We would roam the ships in a pack of laughter and goofiness and I’m still in touch with many of these people over a decade later.

Many of the activities onboard, such as trivia, game shows, and the Broadway-caliber performances, are already suitable for all ages.

If the family is sailing on one of Disney’s newer ships, such as Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, or the upcoming Disney Destiny, the teen might change her tune about swimming when she learns about the AquaMouse – which is a thrilling water coaster at sea.

And of course, she can certainly hang out in Vibe, which is arguably the “coolest” of the kids clubs and designed just for teens between the ages of 14-17.

That’s where I always made the most of my friends, and they have plenty to do between planned activities, game nights, video games, movies, and a teens-only spa.

Alarms Raised on Cruise Ships as Nuclear Submarine Docks Nearby

0

Tensions surfaced in Gibraltar when several passenger-filled cruise ships sailed in the same waters as a nuclear submarine as it was surfacing near the gateway to the Mediterranean’s port.

As Saga Cruises’ 1,000-guest Spirit of Adventure was heading to the port during a 22-night voyage, and Celebrity Cruises’ 2,910-passenger Celebrity Apex sailed nearby on its route to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, during a 13-night adventure, environmentalists issued a warning.

“Verdemar-Ecologists in Action warns the cruise ships Celebrity Apex bound for Palma de Mallorca and the Spirit of Adventure, bound for Southampton, United Kingdom, that they run the risk of being next to a nuclear submarine,” the organization issued in a statement.

Passengers were unaware that the UK’s Royal Navy had docked its nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Astute, in Gibraltar’s military port on March 15, 2025, where Spirit of Adventure called three days later.

The Royal Navy’s lead operational submarine is known for being one of the most advanced nuclear submarines in the world.

It also, like any nuclear submarine, emits low levels of radiation, which prompted the environmental group to shoot off a warning.

The organization feels military vessels should not be docked in tourist ports, especially one as busy as Gibraltar, which receives nearly 300 cruise ships annually.

“Gibraltar must decide whether it wants a military port or a tourist port,” Verdemar-Ecologists in Action stated.

“The UK nuclear-powered submarine HMS Astute docking in Gibraltar’s military port on March 15, 2025, puts the Rock’s tourism sector at risk.”

And it’s not the first time. The submarine last visited the port on February 6, 2025, sparking protests with the group calling the submarine a “floating bomb.”

Nearly a decade ago, another Royal Navy submarine, the HMS Ambush, actually collided with a merchant ship just 3 miles off of Gibraltar and needed to dock for external repairs.

Neither the Royal Navy nor the nearby cruise ships had any comment regarding this week’s visit.

Spirit of Adventure guests visiting Gibraltar enjoyed a carefree 9-hour call before reboarding the vessel for its scheduled March 22, 2025, return to Portsmouth.

Those aboard Celebrity Apex spent March 20 in Palma de Mallorca, nearly 475 nautical miles from the Rock, as Gibraltar is often called.

Sharing the Water

International waters – roughly 12 nautical miles from a coastline – do not belong to a single country and are open for use by all maritime craft.

Like cruise ships, submarines follow the laws of international waters and are required to surface when they enter the territorial waters of a country. They often notify authorities of their presence, especially in busy areas.

As with any ship, the submarines do visit military ports to stock up on supplies, make repairs, and undergo routine maintenance. As Gibraltar is a UK territory, the Royal Navy offers a military port for its ships, including submarines.

The Rock is not the only port where submarines make a regular appearance. In the US, for example, Pearl Harbor is a frequent stop for military submarines.

Here, cruise ship passengers in Honolulu seek out the submarines for photo ops and share them on social media without worry about low radiation emissions that could be contaminating the area.

Other popular cruise ports near military operations include San Diego, California; Sydney, Australia; Portsmouth, England; and Kiel, Germany.

Environmental groups around the world have raised concerns but military officials say the vessels are equipped to shield the nuclear reactors, preventing it from escaping into the environment.

Studies around naval bases and shipyards where nuclear submarines are docked or undergo maintenance show that radiation levels are very minimal and are within safety zones.

Carnival Cruise Line Teases About Next Excel Class Ship

The huge popularity of Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel class ships has eager cruisers excited about the next forthcoming ship in the class, Excel #4, scheduled to set sail in spring 2027.

While the vessel’s debut is still two years away, hopes are already growing for what the ship will deliver, including how she might be the same or different from her sister ships, Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, did recently note that news about the new ship will be coming soon, though he doesn’t say exactly what or precisely when.

“In the next coming chunk of time, we’re going to be telling you about the next Excel ship,” Heald announced in his daily Facebook video. “Wow, this, um… Can’t say anything else.”

This quickly caught the attention of Heald’s fans, who followed up with their excitement but wondered what a “chunk of time” might be.

“It should be in early April so stay tuned,” Heald said.

That means official news and announcements about the next ship in Carnival Cruise Line’s largest-ever class and the first new order for Carnival Corporation & plc in five years could just be days away.

The Next Excel Ship – What We Already Know

The announcement of the fourth Excel class ship was made in February 2024. The ship will be built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, with promises to “wow” guests.

As a sister ship to the existing vessels, the new Excel class will likely feature many of the same attractions and amenities of her older siblings, including the division into distinct themed zones, the extensive Ultimate Playground with the Bolt rollercoaster, a unique Emeril’s Bistro, and much more.

The ship will be powered by liquefied natural gas and will be able to welcome approximately 5,300 guests at double occupancy or up to 6,600 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Roughly 2,000 international crew members will be onboard to help every guest have their most FUN cruise vacation ever.

But there is so much more we don’t know about the ship, and what great fun is to come!

Naming the Next Excel Class Ship

Carnival Excel-Class Cruise Ships
Carnival Excel-Class Cruise Ships

The new ship’s name has not yet been announced. Carnival Cruise Line has, however, given each of the in-service Excel ships names that nod to the cruise line’s early vessels.

The original Mardi Gras was Carnival Cruise Line’s first ever ship when the cruise line began in 1972.

Celebration was in service with the line from 1987-2008, while Jubilee was in service from 1986-2004. Both were Holiday class ships.

But what about other past Carnival ship names that could be reused?

Carnival Holiday could be a nod to the lead ship of the Holiday class, while three other former names – Festivale, Tropicale, and Carnivale – have not yet been reused. The first two might be good choices, but “Carnival Carnivale” doesn’t have quite the right ring to it.

While the retired Fantasy class ship names could be reused, two Fantasy class vessels – Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise – are still in service, so it would be unusual to reuse those names while any sister ships are still sailing.

Of course, the new ship might have a completely new name as she represents a further evolution of the Excel class into what today’s cruisers want to enjoy.

Where Will the New Ship Homeport?

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship
Carnival Jubilee in Galveston, Texas

Carnival cruise fans are eager to know where the fourth Excel ship will be homeported and whether or not she’ll bring the newest, most updated Carnival cruising to a brand new homeport.

Mardi Gras is homeported from Port Canaveral, while Carnival Celebration is in Miami and Carnival Jubilee sails from Galveston. All three ships are staying in their respective homeports year-round at least until spring 2027 – just when the new ship is slated to arrive.

There is great interest in the possibility of homeporting the new Excel class ship from Long Beach, California, bringing the first of these large ships to the West Coast.

Because Long Beach is a year-round homeport, this would be a great place to position the vessel for exciting Mexican Riviera itineraries as well as Carnival Journeys sailings to Hawaii or even offering longer California coast and Alaska sailings.

While it might be exciting to position an Excel class ship in Australia, this might not be as likely with the recent growth of Carnival’s brand Down Under with Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter joining the fleet. Still, this might be another option.

The new ship could also offer more seasonal options rather than remaining year-round sailing from the same homeport. Perhaps she will begin her career in Europe before moving to the Caribbean, Alaska, Australia, or even Asia for unique itineraries throughout her first year or two.

While Carnival Cruise Line does not traditionally do an inaugural season moving a ship to multiple homeports over just a few months, this might be a new strategy the line could try with the new ship.

Of course, it’s also possible that she might displace one of the existing Excel ships and take over sailing from Port Canaveral, Miami, or Galveston while the other ship moves on to a new homeport. Or one homeport could take pride in offering sailings from two Excel ships simultaneously!

Will the New Ship Have a New Theme?

Carnival Jubilee Currents Zone
Carnival Jubilee Currents Zone

Each of Carnival’s Excel class ships has a distinctive theme. Mardi Gras is the most classic of the ships and set the standard for the zone design with different decor and options in different spaces onboard.

Planned around the cruise line’s 50th birthday extravaganza, Carnival Celebration truly celebrates all things Carnival. Of special note is the Golden Jubilee bar that showcases Carnival history with dioramas and artifacts from all five decades of Fun Ships.

Carnival Jubilee is the first in the fleet to have a special homeport connection with the Texas Lone Star on her bow, as well as unique themed parties and shows that offer Texan hospitality and fun to every guest onboard.

So, what will the next ship’s theme be? Maybe another homeport connection, or perhaps a tribute to a specific sailing region.

How about a Caribbean theme for all the top Caribbean destinations Carnival visits? Or maybe a Mexican theme (Carnival Fiesta, anyone?) for the vibrant Mexican destinations the cruise line offers?

Next Steps for the New Ship

Carnival Jubilee at Meyer Werft

The very first step that needs to be taken for the new ship is her steel cutting as official, physical construction begins on her hull. At that time, coins will also be laid under the hull in a shipyard tradition.

This might also be when more news is revealed about the vessel, including her name or theme. Blocks will begin to be laid into place, and eventually the hull will take shape.

After the hull is complete – a process that takes several months, or even more than a year, depending on schedule – the ship will be floated out. This is a special milestone when the ship touches water for the first time, and the hull is complete.

The interior outfitting is the next phase of construction, as the details of the ship come together. As this process nears its conclusion, the ship will undergo sea trials to test all critical systems.

Once the sea trials are complete and the interior outfitting is finished, the ship will be delivered or “handed over” to Carnival Cruise Line. Her construction is complete, but she may still need final interior details and must be supplied. Crew members will start to report, and just a few weeks later, the ship will welcome her first guests.

There is a lot to come in the next two years for the new Excel class ship. Stay tuned every step of the way for the latest updates, news, and announcements as she comes together!

MSC Cruises Expands ‘Dirty Dancing’ Concert to Another Ship

MSC Cruises is bringing more high-powered entertainment to its mega-ship MSC Virtuosa in the summer of 2025, offering new musical productions, including “Dirty Dancing: In Concert,” a show that will debut on the line’s newest ship, MSC World America, in April 2025.

MSC World America will begin sailing from PortMiami in April 2023. MSC Cruises’ announced in January that the “Dirty Dancing: In Concert” show would initially launch on the new ship.

Based on the hit 1987 romantic movie “Dirty Dancing,” the concert promises to bring the classic, fiery love affair between characters Johnny Castle and Frances (Baby) Houseman to life with a team of singers and dancers performing in the ship’s theater.

The 90-minute show will be staged multiple times during each of MSC Virtuosa’s summer itineraries operating roundtrip from Southampton, including sea-day matinees.

We are seeing more UK customers than ever choose MSC Cruises as their holiday choice and I attribute this to our exceptional onboard offering, including excellent dining, a large range of leisure activities and of course, top class entertainment, said Antonio Paradiso, vice president of international sales at MSC Cruises

We want our guests to feel at home on board MSC Virtuosa and I know ‘Dirty Dancing in Concert’ will be a popular choice for anyone travelling with us,Paradiso added.

Show organizers say the concert, set to debut aboard the 6,300-guest ship on July 10, 2025, will feature a “high energy finale,” and guests can enjoy even more of the “Dirty Dancing” atmosphere at themed after-parties.

The “Dirty Dancing” extravaganza is just one of several new presentations planned for MSC Virtuosa. Guests also will have opportunities to attend the “Songbook Abba” show, highlighting iconic hits from the group ABBA, as well as “Starwalker,” which brings to life the music and dance moves made famous by Michael Jackson.

Guests looking for thrills will be able to experience two new cirque aerial performances in the ship’s Carousel Lounge. Work on these productions has started, with one set to launch in June 2025 and another in the fall of 2025. Guests will be invited to name the shows as their debut nears.

Additionally, the show “Hall of Fame,” a concert focused on pop legends set to debut onboard MSC World America, will be expanded to MSC Virtuosa.

MSC Cruises executives point to the new offerings as activity choices geared to various types and ages of guests.

The cruise line has not forgotten the thousands of children who sail with their families aboard MSC Virtuosa. New activities include the MSC Street Theater, a pop-up performance that will entertain at various locations on the ship, including poolside, along the promenade, and at bars and restaurants.

The ship will also delight children with the LEGO Family Game Show and a LEGO Family Parade. Other activities for children will feature new games, parties, and tech-focused events.

Summer Cruises to Feature Norwegian Fjords, Mediterranean

The new entertainment offerings are sure to be welcome additions to indoor activities, but outside, MSC Virtuosa will offer breathtaking experiences and views as the ship sails Northern Europe and the Western Mediterranean from Southampton.

The Meraviglia-Plus-class ship that launched in 2019 is currently sailing a winter series of cruises in the Caribbean but in April will deploy to the UK port.

The ship’s first itinerary from Southampton will be a 12-night Canary Islands cruise departing on April 21, 2025 and calling at Lisbon; Vigo, Spain; and Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Arrecife, Canary Islands.

Among itineraries offered through the season are the 7-night Norwegian fjord voyage, with calls at Haugesund, Nordfjordeid, Flam, and Stavanger, Norway. A 14-night option focused on Spain features visits to La Coruna, Cadiz, Malaga, Alicante, Palma De Mallorca, Valencia, and Barcelona.

MSC Virtuosa will return to the Caribbean in November 2025 and sail a winter series of cruises from multiple embarkation ports, including Barbados, Guadeloupe, and Martinique.

Celebrity Cruises Removes One Key Port From Multiple Itineraries

While it’s not uncommon for cruise lines to tweak itineraries as embarkation day approaches, what is a bit unusual is for a dozen sailings to be modified across multiple ships to remove one specific port of call.

Indeed, Celebrity Cruises has removed Labadee, Haiti, from 10 sailings that will be operated by Celebrity Apex and two cruises onboard Celebrity Beyond.

Labadee is a private resort that is owned and operated by Royal Caribbean. But since Royal Caribbean Group owns Celebrity Cruises, this brand also has access to the exclusive destination.

The Celebrity Apex itineraries impacted include several of the identical 7-night “Key West, Bahamas & Labadee” cruises – all of which sail from Florida’s Port Canaveral and feature calls on Key West, Florida; Bimini, Bahamas; Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic; and normally, Labadee, Haiti,

The 2025 sailings in question are scheduled to embark on November 15 and December 13.

However, most of the changes affect the 2026 voyages – including the sailings that begin on January 10, January 24, February 7, February 21, March 7, March 21, April 4, and April 18.

The majority of these sailings will be calling on Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos instead.

“To provide you with a better experience, we have made the decision to cancel our visit to Labadee, Haiti. Instead, we’ll visit Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM,” Celebrity Cruises wrote to booked guests.

However, the 2026 sailings that embark on January 10, January 24, February 7, and March 7 will call on George Town, Grand Cayman, instead – and also add a stop in Cozumel, Mexico.

“To provide you with a better guest experience, we have made the decision to cancel our visit to Labadee, Haiti. Instead, we’ll visit George Town, Grand Cayman…And we’ll add a stop to Cozumel, Mexico,” the letters from the cruise line read, in part.

The impacted voyages that will be operated by Celebrity Beyond include a 6-night voyage that embarks on April 28, 2025, and a 7-night sailing that begins on August 17, 2025. In both cases, Labadee was swapped out for Grand Turk.

Why Was Labadee Replaced?

Curious cruisers will certainly be wondering why Labadee was removed from so many itineraries – and unfortunately, the short answer is Celebrity Cruises has not provided a concrete reason.

Some cruise fans have theorized that the change is in response to President Trump’s proposed travel ban – which would impact 43 countries and would restrict travel in Haiti. However, Cruise Hive was in touch with Celebrity Cruises, who said this was not the case.

It’s true that there have been some safety concerns associated with the peninsula due to civil unrest within other parts of Haiti – with Royal Caribbean avoiding their destination for several months in 2024 out of an abundance of caution.

The island nation has been in a state of emergency since March of 2024 and is currently under a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory from the US government. This is the most severe advisory a destination can receive.

That said, the cruise line has since resumed sailings to Labadee and reassured guests that their 260-acre destination is safe – largely because it is far removed from the unrest plaguing the country’s capital and is monitored using strict security protocols.

Royal Caribbean has also shown no sign of slowing its operations in Haiti, nor does the cruise line’s website list any travel or itinerary updates as of the time of publication.

Several Royal Caribbean ships are still scheduled to visit the Caribbean paradise in the days surrounding the now-cancelled calls from the Celebrity ships – which makes the changed itineraries feel like even more of a mystery.

No Fresh Water on Carnival’s Transatlantic Cruise Due to Maintenance

While Carnival Spirit may be looking fine and refreshed after her month-long dry dock, guests onboard the first post-update sailing have discovered a salty problem – saltwater.

The ship is still having some maintenance completed and for the moment, there is no filtered drinking water available and even taps in guests’ staterooms are saltwater.

Word of the issue has spread and details have emerged from those onboard the 14-night transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Miami.

Concerned and curious travelers have reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, for more information about what seems to be a very unusual situation.

“I have just gotten a message from a friend and current passenger aboard the Carnival Spirit transatlantic. She told me there is no drinking water onboard, the sink and showers are saltwater, the drink stations don’t operate, several cabins have flooded, and the pools are empty and closed,” one guest described.

“The Spirit just came out of dry dock. We sail on her for the next sailing on the Miami-Seattle Panama Canal Journeys Cruise. Will with issue interfere with that sailing?”

Heald was quick to respond to the guest’s concerns and set their mind at ease about the next cruise.

“Yes, that is correct,” he confirmed. “We have informed the guests that we are doing some maintenance and everybody has bottled water and everybody is having a wonderful time. I’ve heard this directly from the senior manager on board. Thank you so much and there is nothing to be concerned about.”

Another guest onboard verified that the pools are closed, and it’s easy to get bottles of water from nearby bars.

The nature of the ongoing maintenance has not been disclosed, but it may have to do with the reverse osmosis or desalinization filtration system. This would explain why the water in showers and bathrooms has become salty.

Undoubtedly the work is ongoing with every nautical mile the ship sails, and fresh water will be returned to taps as quickly as possible.

Isn’t All Work Finished in Dry Dock?

It can seem surprising that even after a month in dry dock with updates, renovations, and refreshments going on all day and night, the work may not be completed on a vessel once she sets sail again.

Shipyards prioritize what tasks are necessary for the ship to be seaworthy again and complete all technical updates that have to be done to permit the ship to sail. Smaller systems or aesthetic work may not always be finished before the dry dock end date.

If this happens, the ship can still be certified to sail but the work continues as she is underway. This can be astonishing to guests, especially when their cruise experience is impacted on what was to have been a renewed and refreshed ship.

Upgraded Carnival Spirit

Many years ago, I was aboard the first post-dry dock sailing for Fantasy (before she became Carnival Fantasy, and long before the ship was eventually retired and scrapped).

During that cruise, no pools or whirlpools were open and some staterooms on lower decks had plumbing difficulties. Along the Riviera Deck stateroom corridor, there was no carpeting!

Understandably, the line at the Guest Services desk was lengthy and many guests were complaining about the state of the ship and problems in their individual rooms. Every time we walked past the desk, the staff remained cool and polite while they helped each guest.

By the end of that 3-night cruise, the floor was carpeted, hallways cleaned up, and other than the pools remaining closed as we debarked (pools are always closed on debarkation morning), you’d never know there were any lingering problems.

Undoubtedly, the engineering team, maintenance workers, and specialized contractors are hard at work aboard Carnival Spirit to finish up the last details of her updates and maintenance.

Guests on the ship’s forthcoming cruises – her 15-night Panama Canal cruise to Seattle, followed by her Alaska season – are sure to enjoy all the upgraded features and new spaces onboard and all the fun that Carnival Spirit offers.

Norwegian Luna Completes Major Construction Milestone

Once in a blue moon, a maritime milestone captivates cruise fans, and on March 15, 2025, the stars aligned for just such an event.

Just two days after receiving its first Prima Plus class vesselNorwegian Aqua, from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Norwegian Cruise Line’s second Prima Plus class vessel completed her float out.

The 156,300-gross-ton Norwegian Luna’s big event marked her transition from dry dock to water, meaning the ship is ready for her next phase: Interior outfitting.

With interiors created by AD Associates, Piero Lissoni, Rockwell Group, SMC Design, and Studio Dado, the cruise line is one milestone closer to introducing the world to its celestial ship that is “inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides of the ocean.”

In the water at a floating dock just over two years since her steel was first cut, the 3,550-passenger ship is taking the place of her sister Norwegian Aqua, which was delivered to the cruise line on March 13, 2025.

The Fincantieri crew will now begin working to install Norwegian Luna‘s cabins and set up her expansive public areas, including dining halls and entertainment venues.

As Fincantieri shipbuilders continue their work, the ship’s amenities will come to life, including the Aqua Slidecoaster – what will be the fastest waterslide at sea, combining roller coasters and waterslide elements.

Norwegian Luna Float Out
Norwegian Luna Float Out

Visible during her float out was Norwegian Luna’s painted hull. Featuring artwork by Napa, California-based street artist ELLE, the hull is adorned with celestial artwork titled “La Luna.”

“On board Norwegian Luna, innovation and adventure are always within reach, thanks to wide open spaces, attractive and state-of-the-art design, and numerous experiences that allow guests to experience unique emotions,” said Fincantieri.

It continued to highlight the milestone, adding, “We celebrate another success that redefines the standards of innovation and comfort in the cruise industry.”

NCL’s New Prima Plus

The Norwegian Luna is the second vessel in Norwegian Cruise Line’s ambitious rollout of its new Prima Plus class – said to be a more sophisticated evolution of its already popular Prima class ships.

With a total of six ships planned in the series, the Prima Plus class will be bigger and more advanced with more efficient engines, advanced wastewater treatment systems, and the latest in environmental technology.

Once construction and sea trials are complete, Norwegian Luna will make her grand entrance in Miami, where she will offer cruises to the Caribbean beginning April 4, 2026, through November 2026.

Her inaugural season will include two itineraries. The Western Caribbean option will call in Roatan Island, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico, and Norwegian Cruise Line’s private Harvest Caye in Belize.

In the Eastern Caribbean, the ship will sail to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola and St. Thomas in the British and US Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas.

The first two ships, Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Lunaare just the beginning, with four additional ships scheduled to debut by 2028 and four even bigger ships expected between 2030 and 2026.

Maine Port Places 50-Guest Limit on Visiting Cruise Ships

0

Some New England destinations embrace the revenue that even a small cruise-tourism presence can provide, but in Belfast, Maine, a city of just 7,000 people, the City Council has adopted a law to keep virtually all cruise ships out of its harbor.

Under a city ordinance approved on March 18, 2025, no cruise ship that accommodates more than 50 guests is allowed to embark or debark passengers at the city landing or any other city property or marine facility, and the rule applies to ships that dock or use tender boats.

Belfast, a tiny midcoast port town about 100 miles north of Portland and 60 miles south of Bar Harbor — both important cruise destinations, typically attracts only one cruise brand, American Cruise Lines.

The brand included Belfast on some New England itineraries operated by the 100-guest American Eagle in 2024, but under the new law even that ship will be prohibited from calling.

According to the Belfast city manager’s report from the March 18 meeting, where the ordinance was approved, the effort to limit the size of cruise ships that visit the destination began in November 2024.

At that time, the Belfast Harbor Advisory Committee recommended the limit. Local media reports indicate that the city’s harbormaster supported the law, citing safety and navigation concerns that emerged when eight cruise ships — most likely from American Cruise Lines, called at the port in summer 2024.

Limited dock space and bus parking, presumably for shore excursions, contributed to congestion around the harbor. According to local reports, American Cruise Lines had requested that the City Council table the ordinance.

As it stands, the cruise line’s 130-guest American Maverick is scheduled to operate several Maine Coast & Harbors cruises in summer 2025, however, none of the published itineraries include Belfast.

It is likely that, anticipating the passage of the local law, the cruise line preemptively pulled Belfast from its schedule.

Another Maine Port Also Limits Cruise-Tourism

Belfast is known for its antique shops, art galleries, cultural events, historic art deco theater, and mile-long scenic harbor walk.

It lacks a big-ticket attraction like Bar Harbor’s Mount Desert Island, or Portland’s small-city flair, and has never received any visits from large cruise ships.

With the new ordinance in place, Belfast will remain unaffected by cruise-tourism. Bar Harbor, for its part, also took steps to lessen the impact of a growing cruise industry.

In November 2022, the town voted to cap the number of cruise guest arrivals to 1,000 per day. The vote followed a community survey the year before, which found that residents believed cruise tourism to be detrimental to their quality of life.

Business owners fought the cap and, in November 2024, successfully placed another petition before voters seeking to repeal the limit. The measure failed by a slim margin.

Other US cruise destinations also balk at the impacts from cruise tourism. On the other side of the country, in Sitka, Alaska, for instance, voters will soon hold a special election to decide whether to cap daily cruise arrivals at 4,500, and 300,000 per year.

Juneau, Alaska, already caps cruise passengers at 16,000 per day, with a lower limit of 12,000 on Saturdays.

International destinations that have, or are considering, limits on cruise ship size or disembarkations, include some of the Greek islands, Majorca, Spain, and Amsterdam, among other places.

Disney Restricts Vacation Protection Plan to US Cruisers Only

The tides have changed for passengers waving goodbye during a Disney Cruise Line Sail Away Celebration.

The cruise line has updated its policy on its Vacation Protection Plan, and now, only guests with a US address can shield their cruise investment under its travel insurance package.

This means no more Vacation Protection Plans for new bookings by those residing abroad.

To be eligible for a plan, bookings must originate from within the US or Canada, payments must be made in US dollars, and passengers’ homes must be firmly planted in the United States with an official US address.

Although the update is effective immediately, any non-US resident who previously purchased a Vacation Protection Plan for future voyages is still covered.

However, if a plan is cancelled, it will no longer be available for re-purchase under the new rules.

However, the Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plans, administered by Arch Insurance Company and only available for travel booked through Disney, remains a safety net for US-based cruisers and can be purchased at any time before a final payment is made.

It can cover up to the total cruise cost for cancellations or interruptions due to emergencies, $500 for travel delays over six hours, medical expenses up to $20,000, and up to $30,000 for emergency medical evacuations.

For baggage issues, the plan provides up to $3,000 for losses and $500 for delays over 24 hours.

Additionally, the plan features a “Cancel for any Reason” credit feature. This benefit allows guests to receive future cruise credit amounting to 75 percent of the cancellation fee.

It is applicable to a new booking within one year.

Pricing for the Vacation Protection Plan varies based on cruise duration and the date of booking versus the date of sailing but can be around 8 percent of the per-person cruise cost, according to one authorized Disney Vacation Planner.

Travel Insurance Options

While Disney Cruise Line’s policy change may have some international travelers walking the plank, the plan isn’t a boarding requirement.

Travel insurance is for those who want to protect their investment in case of emergencies and is recommended as a safeguard against the unforeseen.

And Disney Cruise Line is not the only provider of travel insurance. Guests booking cruises in the future – whether residing in the US or not – can find a host of providers that will insure a cruise for emergencies, such as Allianz Global Assistance and Travel Guard by AIG.

Coverage is designed to reimburse guests in the event a cruise must be cancelled due to illness, injury, or the death of a family member.

It can also be beneficial if a passenger needs to cut a cruise short due to similar emergencies.

Insurance providers other than Disney also have policies that cover any delay issues, like when bad weather strikes, to help with additional expenses incurred, as well as compensation if baggage is delayed or lost.

The same goes for the costs of medical treatment, should it be needed, if purchased in a travel insurance plan that includes medical coverage not provided by individual health insurance plans, such as emergency care in remote destinations.

Many travel insurance policies also provide assistance with legal costs and fees if an incident occurs while sailing.
