Icon of the Seas Waterslide Closed After Glass Breaks Off, Causing Injury

Part of the fun of a cruise ship water slide is that the thrills are contained to a tube while the passengers on the pool decks below can relax and enjoy the sunshine. The slides come with an adrenaline rush, but guests are never supposed to be in any real danger.

But for one unidentified guest onboard the 5,610-passenger Icon of the Seas, a fun ride on the Frightening Bolt Waterslide quickly turned scary after a hole appeared in a glass portion of the slide while it was in use on the evening of August 7, 2025.

Notably, the water slide boasts the biggest drop at sea at 46 feet tall, and is famous for its trapdoor launch and the inclusion of a full 360° loop.

It is located in the Category 6 Waterpark, which is also the largest park at sea, in Icon’s Thrill Island neighborhood.

Luckily, nobody fell through the unexpected hole, but other passengers reported that the unidentified male rider suffered “skin laceration injuries from his legs to his hands.”

When the clear portion of the tube shattered, water gushed to the deck below, soaking guests who were trying to relax and also creating slip hazards. Thankfully, no other injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson from Royal Caribbean told Cruise Hive the following:

Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.

The surrounding area on Deck 15 was also temporarily closed following the unusual incident.

The 248,663 gross ton vessel is coming to the end of a 7-night eastern Caribbean cruise, which first departed from PortMiami on August 2.

The itinerary included calls at St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and a final call at the cruise line’s private island of Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas on August 8.

Should Guests Be Worried About Using Cruise Ship Waterslides?

Believe it or not, incidents related to cruise ship waterslides are very rare. I personally have enjoyed the waterslides on every single cruise ship I’ve sailed on, and I’ve never had an issue after more than a dozen cruises.

But considering the 7,600-guest mega-vessel only just entered service in early 2024, some are concerned about potential manufacturing or installation problems that are lurking under the surface.

It’s important to keep in mind that cruise ships are held to strict safety standards, which includes maintaining all attractions onboard and completing routine and thorough inspections.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean will not reopen the slide until repairs are made and experts confirm that it is absolutely safe to do so.

This means that the slide could also remain closed for Icon’s next sailing, which is another 7-night eastern Caribbean cruise that embarks in Miami on August 9.

But again, these types of slide mishaps are rare. One of the most well-known incidents occurred three years ago on a Breakaway-Plus class ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line.

In this case, a female passenger got trapped on the ship’s Ocean Loops waterslide, which extends out from the side of the ship above the water.

The unnamed woman was seen going back and forward and eventually coming to a halt in the middle of the slide. She had to wait for the crew to come to her aid via a safety hatch.

This is also not the first time this summer that an important panel has broken on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, although it’s the first time it’s occurred on a water slide.

On June 8, 2025, one of the large glass panels at Coastal Kitchen on Symphony of the Seas shattered and fell to the deck below. In this case, guests in the area were lucky that crew member Nitin Kumar was there to warn them to get out of the way just in time.

Then, on June 29, another glass panel on the roof of the ship’s solarium shattered, as Symphony of the Seas was docking back in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Holland America Celebrates 80 Years in Alaska With Big 2027 Season

Key Aspects:

  • Holland America Line will offer more than 100 Alaska cruises during its 80th anniversary season in 2027.
  • Six ships will sail between April and September, with routes from Seattle, Vancouver, and Whittier.
  • A newly enhanced Cruisetour program will pair cruises with inland Alaska adventures, including Denali.

Holland America Line is preparing to experience a major milestone in 2027: 80 years of sailing in Alaska.

And to celebrate, the cruise line has revealed it will offer more than 100 cruises in the Last Frontier.

The cruise line’s 2027 season will also feature a number of enhancements to its Cruisetour offerings that combine cruising with inland exploration in Alaska.

The 2027 season will run from April through September and will feature six ships and a variety of routes and durations, including a new 8-day itinerary and the return of a month-long Arctic Circle voyage.

“As we approach our 80th year exploring the Great Land, we’re proud to offer cruises and Cruisetours that deepen our legacy of expertise and enrich every guest’s experience,” said Dan Rough, vice president of revenue management for Holland America Line.

With excitement, Rough said these will include tasting locally sourced seafood, engaging with park rangers, and watching bears roam.

“Our Alaska cruises and Cruisetours are crafted to be unforgettable,” he added.

Holland America Line’s 2027 Alaska deployment will include six ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, and Zaandam.

The sailings include roundtrip voyages from Seattle and Vancouver, as well as northbound and southbound cruises between Whittier and Vancouver taking place on Nieuw Amsterdam and Westerdam from May through September.

The season kicks off on three April 24, 2027, sailings, with Eurodam and Koningsdam bringing guests on 7-day voyages from Seattle and Vancouver, respectively, and Zaandam launching an 18-day exploration from Vancouver. Noordam will join the season from Seattle.

In September, Koningsdam and Eurodam will close out the season with the last sailings departing on September 25, 2027.

Expanded Itineraries and Wildlife Programs

New for 2027 is an 8-day roundtrip Inside Passage cruise from Vancouver aboard Koningsdam or Zaandam. The journey includes Glacier Bay, Skagway, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, and a late-night call in Juneau.

For guests seeking longer exploration, the 28-day Arctic Circle Solstice cruise returns for a third year, visiting 11 Alaska ports and crossing into the Arctic Circle around the summer solstice.

The roundtrip voyage departs on June 6, 2027, from Seattle and includes visits to Kodiak, Nome, and Dutch Harbor.

All Cruisetours will include a new complimentary stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and a dedicated Tour Director.

Every cruise in Alaska with Holland America Line includes glacier viewings with itineraries that include visits to Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier, Dawes Glacier, or College Fjord.

The cruise line’s “We Love Alaska” program will also return, bringing cultural enrichment to the ships through local lectures, hands-on workshops, and regional cuisine. On shore, there will be over 175 shore excursions with an emphasis on Alaska’s wildlife.

Bookings are now open for the 2027 season with associated Cruisetours available for booking later this fall. Mariner Society members are being offered early booking bonuses of up to $400 per stateroom.

Guests who book the 2027 season early will receive the “Have It All” package with perks like free prepaid crew appreciation and upgrades to the Elite Beverage Package and Premium Wi-Fi.

Norwegian Cruise Line Warns Guests of Onboard VAT Charges

Key Aspects:

  • Norwegian reminds guests about onboard taxes based on where cruises start and sail, including VAT and sales tax.
  • Spain and Italy have strict tax rules, with up to 22% VAT on retail and 10% on food and drinks.
  • Passengers have reported surprise charges, prompting the cruise line to post reminders on ships.

Passengers setting sail with Norwegian Cruise Line in Spain and Italy in the coming months may want to take a closer look at their onboard purchases.

The cruise line has issued a notice reminding guests and travel advisors that Value Added Tax (VAT) and sales tax may apply to some items during sailings, depending on where a ship is located and where the cruise begins.

The tax charges will primarily affect food, beverage, and retail purchases made onboard in countries like Spain and Italy, but the reminder also includes sailings in US ports.

The cruise line noted that VAT is not added to the total cost of pre-purchased beverage or dining packages. Instead, it’s charged per item consumed – but only when required by local laws.

“VAT is something you might see applied during your cruise, but only when you enjoy food or drinks on board in specific destinations,” Norwegian Cruise Line stated in a letter dated August 5, 2025.

The cruise line is asking travel partners to communicate this information to guests so they aren’t caught off guard by added charges.

The notice follows complaints from passengers who didn’t know a VAT was in place until it was time to settle their accounts.

Said one passenger, “Just came off mine, Barcelona to Barcelona. $511 tax bill. We weren’t informed until boarding.”

How VAT and Taxes Apply

Value Added Tax is a consumption tax and unlike a single sales tax is collected as the product moves through the supply chain, with customers paying the final cost.

VAT is governed by national tax authorities, which is why Spain and Italy have different rules than say, France. Spain, for example, is known to have some of the strictest VAT rules.

This is why tax rates and rules for VAT and certain taxes vary based on embarkation port, destination countries, and whether a sailing remains within the European Union (EU) or leaves its boundaries.

If a cruise starts in Spain, for example, and includes at least one port outside of the EU, a 10 percent VAT applies to food and beverage purchases while the ship in in Spanish ports or sailing within Spanish territorial waters.

However, if the cruise begins in Spain and does not leave the EU, two different VAT charges apply throughout the entire voyage: a 21 percent VAT is added to all retail purchases made onboard, and a 10 percent VAT applies to food and drink orders and remain in place for the full cruise.

But if guests are on a cruise to Spain that originated from a port outside of Spain, a 10 percent VAT is applied on food and drink while in Spanish waters or docked at Spanish ports.

In Italy, guests on cruises that stay within the EU will be charged a 22 percent VAT on retail purchases for the duration of the sailing.

Meanwhile, in the US, standard sales tax will be applied to food and beverage purchases made while the ship is in US ports or territorial waters.

For passengers with purchased packages such as the “More at Sea Beverage Package,” the taxes aren’t added upfront.

Instead, VAT is applied individually to each drink or meal item consumed during times and locations when the applicable tax is in effect.

If this sounds extremely confusing, it is. Which is why Norwegian Cruise will now display signage and daily reminders when taxes are being added.

Princess Cruises Doubling Ship Deployment to Japan in 2027

Key Aspects

  • Sapphire Princess will join Diamond Princess in East Asia for the 2027 season.
  • The addition of the second ship doubles Princess Cruises’ guest capacity in the region.
  • Bookings for sailings on both ships will open on August 20, 2025.

For the first time, Princess Cruises will deploy two ships rather than its traditional one to East Asia in 2027, offering 78 cruise departures from the Tokyo region.

Sister ships Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess, both Japanese-built, will operate 50 unique itineraries between March and December 2027. The cruise line typically deploys Diamond Princess to the region, and the addition of the sister ship means the line is doubling capacity.

Both ships accommodate 2,670 guests; the Gem-class vessels entered service in 2004.

The wide range of itineraries will allow guests to celebrate Japan’s summer festivals as well as its famous spring cherry blossom season. In fact, specific “Cherry Blossom Voyages” are timed to coincide with the blooming season, as ships travel south to north, calling at Japan’s four largest islands.

The addition of Sapphire Princess augments Princess Cruises’ already-expanding presence in East Asia.

In 2025, the line deployed Diamond Princess from March to August with 35 departures. In 2026, it lengthened the season to February through November and scheduled 50 departures. Now, with the 2027 changes, departures climb to 78, and the season runs from through December.

This upcoming 2027 season is more than an expansion – it’s a homecoming, said Gus Antorcha, President of Princess Cruises

Our story in Japan has deepened over time and experience and in 2027, we return promising unforgettable experiences, including the renowned Cherry Blossoms, seven spectacular festivals and journeys that immerse you in the awe and wonder of this destination,Antorcha added.

Highlights of the 2027 season in East Asia include 9- to 24-day “Cherry Blossom Voyages” and 8- to 24-day “Festival Cruises,” all held in August.

Among them are the Aomori Nebuta Festival, with its illuminated floats, traditional music, and dancers, the Hakodate Minato Festival, a maritime event, and the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival, where 10,000 local dancers perform.

The final event, the Kumano Fireworks Festival, provides a spectacular pyrotechnic display.

Itineraries Feature UNESCO Sites, Late-Night Port Stays

Princess Cruises, a Carnival Corporation brand, has designed the 2027 itineraries to provide a greater opportunity for local cultural immersion by scheduling more than a dozen late-night departures from ports of call. The longer stays are planned in Osaka, Hiroshima, Hakodate, Sakata, and Halong Bay, among other places.

Itineraries offer visits to 21 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Mount Fuji, the Itsukushima Shrine & Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the Ancient Kyoto Monuments, and the Jomon Prehistoric Sites.

Bookings for all sailings will open on August 20, 2025, and those who reserve by August 27, 2025 are eligible for Captain’s Circle Savings up to $200 per stateroom.

Sapphire Princess will arrive in East Asia following her 33-night “Hawaii, Japan & Southeast Asia Grand Adventure” cruise, which departs Los Angeles on November 22, 2026. That sailing, with multiple calls in the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, ends in Singapore.

Before her transpacific crossing, the ship will have sailed a short series of Canada/New England cruises between Boston and Quebec City earlier in the fall of 2026, along with a Panama Canal transit from Fort Lauderdale that positions her on the US West Coast.

Diamond Princess, meanwhile, will already be in East Asia in fall of 2026, concluding her season there with cruises sailing between Yokohama, Japan, and Singapore, and roundtrip from Singapore.

MSC Cruises Is Latest Line to Change Drink Packages

Key Aspects:

  • MSC Cruises is ending the Easy Plus drink package, but any purchases already made for future sailings will be honored.
  • The Premium Extra, Alcohol-Free, and Minors drink packages are still available for guests to purchase.
  • Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises have also recently updated their drink packages.

Have the cruise lines been drinking? Yet another line is making adjustments to its beverage packages. This time, it’s MSC Cruises tweaking the different options available for guests to toast their cruise vacations.

Effective from August 1, 2025, MSC Cruises guests will no longer be able to buy the “Easy Plus Package” as part of their add-ons.

This mid-range package included cocktails, protein shakes, spirits, cordials, beers, all non-alcoholic drinks, bottled mineral water, and wines by the glass.

Drinks at signature venues such as Venchi 1878 and Jean-Philippe Maury, however, were not included.

If guests have already purchased the Easy Plus package for an upcoming sailing, the package will be honored for that cruise regardless of sailing date.

MSC Cruises explained that this change is “part of our ongoing efforts to simplify our product offerings and make decision-making easier for our guests.”

Three drink packages are still available, with different levels of inclusions.

  • Premium Extra Package – Includes all drinks up to $16 such as premium spirits, wine and champagne by the glass, cocktails, beers, specialty coffee, smoothies, juices, and sodas.
  • Alcohol-Free Package – Includes all non-alcoholic drinks, mocktails, energy drinks, tea, coffee, soda, and still or sparkling bottled water.
  • Minors Package – Only available to guests age 20 and younger. Includes all non-alcoholic drinks, juices, soda, soft serve ice cream, and still or sparkling water.

A fourth package, the Easy Package, was discontinued from December 18, 2024. As with the new change ending the Easy Plus Package, however, any existing Easy Package purchases will continue to be honored.

Read Also: Why Are MSC Cruises so Cheap?

Package prices vary depending on cruise length, ship, and departure date. Pre-cruise purchases are often the best deal at up to 15% off onboard prices. Occasional sales can even see discounts of up to 35% off!

Why So Many Drink Package Changes?

MSC Cruises is just the latest cruise line to make adjustments to its drink packages and offerings in the past few weeks.

Norwegian Cruise Line, for example, recently removed bottled water from its drink packages, but only on Pride of America. That ship offers 7-night Hawaiian cruises year-round and the change is a step toward better sustainability to protect Hawaii’s delicate ecosystem.

Royal Caribbean updated its policy terms to close the too-often-used loophole for the “everyone much purchase” rule for its deluxe beverage package. Now, there will not be exceptions made for medical reasons or personal preferences.

Princess Cruises has likewise adjusted its drink offerings and what drinks are and aren’t included in the Premier and Plus Packages in response to guest feedback.

Carnival Cruise Line is also changing its drink packages. While there are no pricing or inclusion changes, the cruise line is switching the fleet from Pepsi products to Coca-Cola drinks, a change that should be finished by mid-September.

While drink packages can be very convenient for guests, MSC Cruises is correct – they can also be very confusing.

Cruise lines must carefully balance guests’ desires for popular drinks along with the profitability of offering package discounts.

Just as drink preferences change over time (who would have found protein drinks or energy drinks on cruises 30 years ago?), so too must cruise lines be adaptable with what they offer.

Package inclusions, limits, and pricing are always subject to change. Cruise lines regularly re-evaluate their offerings to give guests the best possible experiences and options to suit their tastes.

No Refund for Carnival Guests Even Though It’s Not Their Fault

Key Aspects:

  • A family missed their cruise on Carnival Glory when a traffic jam made them late to the cruise terminal.
  • Carnival Cruise Line does not offer refunds for this situation – all guests must arrive at the cruise terminal on time or they will be denied boarding.
  • The guidance on when cruise terminals close is set but the federal government, not the cruise line.

I’m a nervous traveler at the best of times, and nothing makes me more nervous than a traffic backlog on the way to the cruise terminal on embarkation day.

Granted, I live just 20 minutes away from the best cruise port in the world, Port Canaveral. Even then, a bad traffic accident or unexpected detour could cause significant delays.

But what if cruise guests are delayed so much that they miss their terminal arrival appointment altogether and they’re not permitted to board the ship?

One family looking forward to their sailing aboard Carnival Glory found out the hard way that there’s nothing the cruise line can or will do.

Worth Reading: No Carnival Refunds for Hurricane Cancellations – Except One Way

The upset guest reached out to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, with their tale of traffic woes.

“We missed the ship and it wasn’t our fault. We drove from Senoia, Georgia to get on the Glory. There was a wreck on I-75. We arrived 50 minutes before the boat was leaving. The Glory was still there but the doors to the terminal were closed,” the guest described.

“There were no Carnival reps, we were left stranded, nobody helped us. How do we get our money back?”

While the cruise departure date was not mentioned, Carnival Glory is homeported from Port Canaveral, offering 3- and 4-night Bahamas sailings.

The guest mentions that a relative of theirs suggested they contact Heald with their complaint and to get a full refund.

While John Heald does handle all types of guest complaints, from difficulties with onboard operations to the raging debate about butter or margarine, the policy on refunds is very clear.

He is not unsympathetic to their disappointment, but neither will he be offering them a refund for their missed Carnival Glory sailing.

“I know the stress you must have been under driving and there being a wreck, a car accident I’m guessing, delaying the traffic,” he said.

Heald explains that guests must arrive on time in order to board their ship. In fact, a federal law determines when the terminal must close and no more guests are permitted to board.

Worth Reading: Cruise Ship Passenger Out of Pocket After Tour Company Refuses to Refund

That the ship was still docked only means that luggage and supplies may still be in the process of being loaded onboard, or the ship may be waiting for the harbor pilot to grant permission for the vessel to depart.

Heald likened the situation to flights, when the aircraft doors are closed before departure. This is a security and procedural issue, and once those doors are closed, no late passengers are permitted aboard.

He goes on to note that this is a time when there’s nothing Carnival Cruise Line can do about any sort of refund.

“Cruise insurance is not necessary – until it is,” he concluded.

Why Can’t Guests Board a Cruise Ship Late?

It is important to remember that a departing cruise ship isn’t just leaving a homeport for a pleasure sailing, it is a vessel transporting thousands of passengers out of the country. For this reason, every cruise line must be in full compliance with federal laws.

Carnival Cruise Line’s website explains:

“US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires Carnival Cruise Line to submit a final departure manifest with specific guest information at least 60 minutes prior to departure.”

Even if guests were to arrive just a few minutes after that deadline, they would not be properly checked in and on that final departure manifest, and therefore would not be permitted to board.

“In preparation for departure, all guests must be on board by the Final Boarding time printed on the boarding pass or they will not be permitted to sail,” the website states.

This information is also found on the Carnival Hub app and in the Guest Ticket Contract that all travelers agree to when they book a Carnival cruise. The issue of refunds is also noted in that contract, but not in a way these travelers would find helpful:

“No refunds will be made in the event of ‘no shows,'” the contract clearly states.

Heald’s mention of travel insurance is apt. Some policies (depending on individual terms and conditions) would refund a cruise due to circumstances outside the traveler’s control, such as a traffic jam that made them too late to board their ship.

Experienced cruisers will also emphasize the importance of arriving at the cruise homeport a day or two before sailing, just in case of such stressful circumstances.

Far better to be late to one’s pre-cruise hotel stay and miss out on a nice dinner or evening at the pool rather than be late to the cruise terminal and miss the entire cruise vacation.

Norwegian Cruise Line Drops Bottled Water on One Ship

Key Aspects:

  • Bottled water will no longer be available as part of drink packages on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America.
  • Vero Water dispensers are being added throughout the ship for guests to refill bottles and cups.
  • Guests can still buy bottled water a-la-carte if desired, but it is not included in packages.

Staying hydrated is important on any cruise, but is particularly critical in tropical regions such as the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. It is in Hawaii, however, that Norwegian Cruise Line is adjusting its drink packages and will no longer include bottled water.

The cruise line has reached out to travel agents and booked guests with the update on what water is and isn’t included aboard Pride of America, the only cruise ship offering 7-night inter-island Hawaii sailings.

“To help reduce single-use plastics onboard, we’re including eco-friendly unlimited premium Vero Water and discontinuing the use of bottled water in both our Hawaii Beverage and Water Packages,” the cruise line confirmed.

This is part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, which is particularly critical to preserving the natural beauty of the Aloha State.

Many cruise lines have adopted other sustainability measures to reduce or eliminate single-use plastic, such as no longer offering straws and switching to wooden coffee stirrers.

Vero Water will be available through dispensers at various locations onboard, including on the pool deck, the main dining rooms, and different cafes and restaurants. A water station is also “coming soon” to the gangway to ensure easy fill-ups as guests depart to explore ports of call.

“Just bring your favorite bottle or cup and refill as often as you like,” the cruise line said.

Guests with the beverage or water package will need to activate the dispensers with their keycard as well as bring along their own bottle or cup for refilling.

Pride of America reusable keepsake water bottles are also available for purchase ($14.95 USD) at any bar. On embarkation day, sales tables will also be available in the ship’s atrium, at the Aloha Cafe on Deck 11, and on the pool deck.

To be clear, the Hawaii Beverage Package does include unlimited Vero Water, but not the reusable bottle, which must be purchased separately. The bottle is included with the Vero Water Package, which costs $29.95.

Guests will still be able to purchase bottled water individually if desired, which can be especially helpful for port visits or if one doesn’t want the souvenir bottle.

Vero Water is filtered water and part of the Culligan brand, a US-based company familiar worldwide in corporate, restaurant, hotel, and home settings.

Multiple Drink Package Changes

Several cruise lines have been updating their beverage packages in recent weeks.

In June, Carnival Cruise Line announced the impending switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola products, which should be rolled out fleetwide in early or mid-September.

Sister line Princess Cruises also tweaked its add-on packages and which drinks are and aren’t counted toward daily limits.

Just days ago, Royal Caribbean confirmed that it has tightened the “everyone must purchase” policy on its all-inclusive beverage package, ending an exemption loophole that has grown out of control.

Regardless of which cruise line guests enjoy or which beverages they toast their next sailings with, package terms and conditions are always subject to change. It is not unusual for cruise lines to adjust offerings based on popularity, guest feedback, and corporate contracts.

Overboard Passenger Rescued From Cruise Ship in Baltic Sea

Key Aspects:

  • The alarm was raised aboard AIDAnova in the middle of the night as the ship sailed toward Copenhagen.
  • The ship’s crew recovered from the water an 18-year-old intoxicated male who was unharmed.
  • Apparently, the teenager had joked with his friends about jumping overboard.

Imagine being awakened in your cruise cabin in the wee hours of the morning by the urgent public address announcement: Man overboard!

That was the experience for thousands of guests aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova as she sailed the Baltic Sea on her way to Copenhagen.

The 16-deck ship, which carries 6,600 guests at full capacity, sprang to life at 2 a.m. on July 16, 2025 when the ship’s loudspeakers blared the news that someone had gone overboard.

Local media reported that the 183,858-gross-ton ship was immediately stopped and turned around, and a dramatic rescue mission was launched by crew members in lifeboats. Bleary-eyed guests were told they could help in the search by using cell phone flashlights to illuminate the dark water.

Police reports later identified the overboard guest as an intoxicated 18-year-old male. Police indicated that he jumped overboard after a bout of drinking with friends, and had even joked about it earlier in the evening.

Fortunately, his misguided adventure did not end in tragedy and the teenager was retrieved, unharmed, from the ocean by ship’s crew. His name and nationality were not revealed.

However, the drama was not yet over for the ship’s passengers.

The ship’s captain required that all passengers assemble at their muster stations for a total headcount — just to make certain that no one else had gone missing.

Finally, around 4 a.m., the event came to a close. At the time of the alarm, the ship was enroute to Copenhagen and was traveling at about 15 knots with force 6 winds, meaning the winds were topping out at a stiff 30 mph.

AIDAnova, which entered service in 2018, was sailing a 7-night Scandinavia cruise roundtrip from Kiel, Germany. Her weeklong voyages typically call at Copenhagen on day four, following a visit to Skagen, Denmark. After the call at Copenhagen, the ship visits Aarhus, Denmark, before returning to Kiel.

There was no police or cruise line statement about any ramifications the teen would experience as a result of his misconduct.

Recent Overboard Cases Include a Crew Tragedy

Man overboard alarms happen from time to time on cruise ships, and some end in tragedy. In one recent case aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, a crew member jumped overboard after an altercation with another crew member.

The person who jumped was retrieved from the water near the Bahamas, but did not survive the July 25, 2025 fall. Icon of the Seas had been operating an Eastern Caribbean cruise from PortMiami.

Sometimes, man overboard alarms turn out to be accidental falls. One high-profile and particularly scary event happened on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream on June 29, 2025.

In that instance, a 5-year-old girl slipped overboard and was saved by her father, who dove into the water after her. Both were rescued by the ship’s crew, who had quickly launched lifeboats. The ship was sailing a 4-night Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale.

Perfect Day Turns Ugly After Guest Brawl Shuts Down Pool at CocoCay

Key Aspects:

  • A large brawl broke out in the Oasis Lagoon on CocoCay on Sunday, August 3, while two ships were enjoying the private island.
  • The pool was temporarily closed afterward, possibly for cleaning and sanitizing if blood was spilled.
  • Royal Caribbean has not issued an official statement, but those involved are likely to face consequences for their unruly behavior.

A cruise vacation should be a peaceful time to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family while having fun at top destinations.

One of Royal Caribbean’s top destinations is Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas. Guests aboard Utopia of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, however, experienced neither a relaxing utopia nor a jewel of a visit on Sunday, August 3.

Both ships were sailing 3-night weekend getaways that departed on Friday, August 1. Utopia of the Seas sails from Port Canaveral, while Jewel of the Seas sails from Fort Lauderdale.

During their day at CocoCay, a fight involving at least a dozen or more guests broke out in the Oasis Lagoon. The freshwater pool includes a swim-up bar and in-water loungers, and the altercation happened in waist-deep water.

Video posted on social media shows fists flying, angry splashes, yelling, profanity, pushing, slaps, and other physical violence between multiple adults.

Other guests on the island who were not involved reported that there was blood and hair in the pool after the incident, and some guests were seen being escorted away by security.

The Oasis Lagoon was temporarily closed after the fight, which would have been a necessary precaution if blood were spilled. Cleanup and sanitization would be essential after such an event.

Royal Caribbean has not yet issued an official statement about the incident.

As the fight occurred on CocoCay, charges could be brought through the Bahamian authorities depending on the extent of any injuries or how the fight began or escalated.

The guests involved are also likely to face consequences directly from Royal Caribbean. The cruise line’s Guest Conduct Policy states:

“Verbally abusive or offensive language directed toward anyone, including guests, crew members, governmental officials, or others is not permitted.”

Passengers Brawl at CocoCay Lagoon

The policy also notes that “inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted,” which includes “uninvited physical contact.”

All guests agree to the Guest Conduct Policy when they book a Royal Caribbean cruise. Violations can result in a range of consequences, from being admonished by security to the removal of the involved guests and everyone in their travel party from the cruise.

Involved guests might also be banned from Royal Caribbean and related cruise lines.

This is not the first time a fight has occurred at CocoCay. In May 2025, a brawl between several guests escalated over the use of ocean space in the Chill Island area.

While fights certainly don’t happen on every cruise, it does seem like such incidents are becoming more common.

Longtime cruisers often wonder what can be done to dissuade such behavior. Cruise lines do try to have security visibly posted in public areas, but that isn’t always a deterrent, especially in a large area like the Oasis Lagoon.

Many cruisers have suggested bans not just from one cruise line, but from entire cruise line families. For Royal Caribbean, this would include Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, both of which are also part of the Royal Caribbean Group.

While a multi-line ban may seem harsh, it isn’t necessarily meaningful. While many cruisers enjoy sailing with different lines, people who feel no compunction against brawling in public aren’t always the type of travelers to sail on premium or luxury lines.

Some experienced cruisers hope that cruise lines might begin sharing information on banned individuals.

This could mean that someone banned from Royal Caribbean might also be banned on Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, or Norwegian Cruise Line.

Sharing such identifying information, not to mention details of incidents and their consequences, may face legal challenges. At this time, no cruise lines share such information outside of their corporate families.
