Carnival Sunrise missed Celebration Key due to high winds, and one guest is complaining that no compensation is offered.
All cruise lines will always prioritize the safety of the ship, guests, and crew even if it means missing a port visit.
The guest also complained that there was “nothing” for their children to do onboard, but how true is that?
It’s naturally disappointing when a cruise ship must skip a port, and it can be confusing when it seems as though the day may have been perfect, weather-wise. But perfect weather to a guest can be very different than perfect weather for a ship to safely visit a destination.
One recent Carnival cruise guest has learned that lesson the hard way during a recent sailing aboard Carnival Sunrise. The 102,300-gross-ton ship is homeported from Miami and visits Celebration Key on nearly every sailing.
On this particular guest’s sailing, it was not possible for the ship to call at the new private destination, and they were NOT happy about the decision.
To voice their complaint, they reached out to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador. Heald responds to hundreds of guest concerns every week.
“We are on Sunrise we had our visit to Celebration Keys abandoned. It was the port we were most looking forward to. We wanted our children to swim in the lagoon and see the parade,”the guest explained.
While they did not specify the exact sailing date of their cruise, it may have been the ship’s Thanksgiving week voyage that departed on Monday, November 24. Celebration Key was to have been the last port visit of the 6-night itinerary, with the visit planned for Saturday, November 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Heald quickly acknowledged the guests’ disappointment. The new port has proven very popular with guests, and Carnival does want to be able to offer the experience to everyone.
“I am so sorry for the cancelation of Celebration Key, we would have loved for you to have enjoyed this fabulous destination with your lovely family,”he said.“I know how much your children would have enjoyed the lagoon and the Junkanoo parade, so I am again very sorry they were unable to do so.”
How Bad Was the Weather, Really?
The guest goes on to claim that Carnival’s justification for the port cancellation was just a deception.
“The weather was not bad. It was just a ploy for the cruise line to open the casino and bars. Our kids are devastated. There was nothing for 12 and 15 year old kids to do on the boat,”they complained.
Heald responded to that accusation as well, noting the exact weather conditions when Carnival Sunrise would have been docked.
“With respect you are wrong to say the weather was ‘not bad.’ The report from the Fleet Operations Center and from the Captain showed there were NE winds of 40 knots [46 miles per hour] and 2-meter swells by the pier,”he explained.“This meant it would have been very unsafe to try and dock the ship.”

It isn’t just docking that would have been a concern in those weather conditions. It would have been unsafe for guests to use the gangways or walk along the pier with the risk of high waves and gusts.
“Our Captains do their very best to try and dock the ship but they will never put the safety of the ship and those on board in jeopardy,”Heald reiterated.
It is natural for onboard casinos and bars to reopen when a ship skips a port. Furthermore, the Fun Squad would have added extra games, dance lessons, and other activities to the daily schedule.
This belies the idea that “there was nothing” for children to do onboard. Trivia contests, the ship’s Warehouse Arcade on Deck 5, the SportSquare, Seaside Theater movies, pools, waterslides, and other options would all have been available.
No Compensation Despite Demands
Naturally, the guest is not satisfied that the ship took steps to keep everyone safe. Instead, they are frustrated that no financial compensation was offered for the missed port.
“We asked for one day refund of the cruise or some money to spend on board. Nothing has been done. Nothing has been given. Why!!!!!!”they said.
Heald has been clear that it is not the cruise line’s policy to offer compensation simply for missing a port visit due to weather, as that is obviously outside Carnival’s control.
Section 8(d) clearly states:“Carnival may change the duration and/or itinerary of the cruise at any time. … to omit or change any or all port calls … Carnival shall have no liability for any compensation or other damages in such circumstances for any change in itinerary [or] ports of call.”
While Carnival Cruise Line may offer some compensation in cases of extreme itinerary changes, such as all ports being cancelled without alternatives, they are not obligated to do so. Guests should never expect, much less demand, such an offer.
Sky Princess has arrived at Port Canaveral to begin her Caribbean winter season.
The Royal-class ship is now offering 6- and 8-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries through mid-March 2026.

The sky is a little bigger and brighter for the winter at Port Canaveral with the arrival of Sky Princess to her newest homeport on Sunday, November 30, 2025. The ship is yet another vessel to call the Space Coast home and adds more variety for eager cruise guests setting sail from central Florida.
The 145,300-gross-ton ship arrived at Port Canaveral following her 16-night transatlantic cruise from Southampton that departed on Friday, November 14. Along the way, Sky Princess visited England, France, Spain, the Azores, and Bermuda.
Now, the ship will remain sailing from Florida through the winter, until she returns to Southampton in mid-March 2026.
In the meantime, Sky Princess is a welcome addition to the Port Canaveral homeport fleet of outstanding cruise ships.

With so many options from the world’s second busiest cruise port, it’s no surprise that Port Canaveral is consistently a favorite for cruise guests. Approximately 75% of travelers drive to the centrally located homeport, which is just an hour from Orlando, three hours from Miami, and 7-8 hours from Atlanta.
Sailing Aboard Sky Princess from the Space Coast
This first-of-the-season Caribbean cruise for Sky Princess is an 8-night itinerary with visits planned for Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas. The ship’s 6-night itineraries will be visiting Nassau, Amber Cove, and Grand Turk. On select sailings, Sky Princess will also be visiting Freeport.
The variation in itineraries makes setting up a back-to-back sailing an ideal option for guests, creating a 14-night cruise that doesn’t repeat any port visits.
Onboard, guests will also enjoy the amazing options Sky Princess offers, including multiple specialty restaurants, the relaxing Lotus Spa, outstanding entertainment, and much more.
Sky Princess can welcome 3,660 guests aboard and is also home to approximately 1,300 international crew members.
A man violated the secure area of the Martinique cruise port and jumped into the water on November 29, 2025.
Crew members from Enchanted Princess sounded the overboard alert and rescued the man, who was not a cruise guest.
The man was turned over to local authorities and there was no delay or impact to the cruise ship.
Cruise ships are always on the alert for the possibility of guests or crew members overboard, or refugees in hazardous conditions who need assistance.
The crew of Enchanted Princess, however, rescued a man from the water, though he did not go overboard from the cruise ship, and he was not a refugee.
The incident happened on Saturday, November 29, 2025 while Enchanted Princess was visiting Martinique. The man allegedly eluded checkpoints to enter the port’s secure area without authorization, then jumped in the water in front of the 145,300-gross-ton cruise ship.

Enchanted Princess was docked at the time, visiting the port from roughly 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ship was not in motion, though it is always dangerous to be swimming near such a vast vessel.
The man overboard alert was issued and a life ring was thrown to him for immediate assistance. A rescue boat was then dispatched from the Princess Cruises’ ship to retrieve the man. He was taken directly to the pier and turned over to local police.
Cruise Hive reached out to Princess Cruises about the incident. The cruise line confirmed that the man was in police custody and that he did not jump from the cruise ship.
No further details about the man, including why he took such a drastic measure as jumping into the water near the cruise ship, have been released. One passenger got in touch with Cruise Hive to say that local police took custody of the man by 10:00 a.m.
The incident may have involved a suspect fleeing from authorities for other offenses, but this has not been confirmed. Of course, simply violating the secure area of the port is an offense that would be handled by local authorities as well.
There were no delays or operational interruptions to Enchanted Princess. The Royal-class cruise ship had departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, November 23, for the 12-night Southern Caribbean Holiday sailing, and Martinique is the next-to-last port visit on the itinerary.
The ship will visit Antigua on Sunday, November 30, before turning her bow back toward Florida to arrive in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, December 3.
Enchanted Princess can welcome 3,660 guests onboard, and is also home to roughly 1,300 international crew members.
Not the First Bizarre Not-Quite-Overboard Incident
Typically, when guests onboard a cruise ship hear the “man overboard” or “Oscar! Oscar! Oscar!” code, it means an unfortunate overboard incident from the ship itself or possibly sighting a refugee craft nearby.
Sometimes, however, the situation is very different, and the overboard isn’t actually from the ship at all.
For example, in June 2025, a cruise guest jumped off the pier in Juneau, Alaska, likely as part of a stunt for social media videos. It is not known what ship the individual was from, though the stunt was staged inside the secure area of the port.
In December 2024, a man jumped from a pier in the Canary Islands and attempted to swim to a cruise ship docked nearby. Which ship is uncertain, because local police intervened and stopped the man before he reached any ship.
In some cases, guests might accidentally fall from piers near cruise ships. This often happens due to inattentiveness, such as when a man stepped off the pier at Perfect Day at CocoCay while filming Star of the Seas in mid-August during one of the ship’s preview sailings in August 2025.
These unusual incidents certainly catch people’s attention, but for all the wrong reasons, as it is usually the authorities who are paying the most attention.
Anyone engaging in such stunts risks fines and other penalties. If they are cruise guests, they may be disembarked from their ship and potentially banned from future sailings.

Cruise Line Sets New Rule For Drink Orders
In what appears to be an effort to curb overindulgence, Carnival Cruise Line has decided that guests must wait 10 minutes between drink purchases onboard its ships. The previous rule was that 5 minutes must elapse between purchases.
The odd thing is that the new rule applies not only to alcoholic beverages but to soft drinks as well. The new regulation means that guests cannot order, say, two shots of whisky at a time, or one shot of whisky and a soda. In both examples, the orders would count as two purchases.

While the cruise line has not publicly announced the change, it has noted the new rule on its website’s FAQ section regarding the Cheers! drink package. Under that package, guests can purchase up to 15 drinks per day.
The FAQ change details the longer wait between purchases and reminds guests that sharing is not permitted — meaning that guests are not allowed to use their drink package to buy beverages for other guests sharing their cabin.
In fact, if one guest in a stateroom purchases the package, all others sharing the stateroom must also buy it. This applies to cruisers over age 21.
Elderly Passenger Jumps From Disney Ship
A disturbing event took place in the early hours of November 22, 2025, when a 73-year-old passenger onboard Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonderjumped overboard as the ship sailed from Australia to New Zealand.
It was around 4:30 a.m. when the male guest apparently jumped from the 2,700-guest ship, which was sailing a 5-night voyage from Melbourne to Auckland. A search for the guest lasted five hours, and crew members use thermal-imaging cameras to try to locate the man in the Tasman Sea.

The search was eventually called off, and the ship continued on her way to New Zealand. The passenger’s name has not been revealed, but news reports indicate he was Australian.
Guests later shared on social media that the atmosphere onboard the ship following the search was sombre. Disney Cruise Line has not commented on the tragedy.
Ironically, this is the final season of Disney Cruise Line’s deployment to Australia/New Zealand. The cruise line announced earlier this year that when the current season ends in February, the line will no longer base a ship in the region.
Cruise Ship Checks Wrecked Boat
Adhering to maritime law, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras interrupted a day at sea to check out what appeared to be a wrecked boat near Princess Cays in the Bahamas.
The unusual sighting happened on November 23, 2025, as the 6,500-guest ship sailed a 7-night Thanksgiving cruise to the Eastern Caribbean from Port Canaveral.
The 180,000-gross-ton ship paused her itinerary and circled the partially sunken vessel, which was essentially a raft, to make sure no one was in need of assistance.

Under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), ships must take all necessary and reasonable steps to rescue anyone in distress.
Guests posted about the odd event on social media, confirming that no persons were seen on or near the wrecked vessel, although there was debris in the water nearby.
Satisfied that no one needed rescue, Mardi Gras continued on her way to her first port of call, Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos. Other calls on the holiday itinerary include Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, Nassau, Bahamas, and Celebration Key, the cruise line’s newest private island destination.
When passengers board MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia in New York on November 30, 2025, they’ll do so knowing that their scheduled visit to Port Canaveral will be more than four hours shorter than originally planned.
Due to ongoing propulsion issues, the ship’s 7-night Bahamas cruise will visit the Florida port starting at 5:30 p.m. rather than at 1 p.m., an alert from the cruise line to booked guests explained. The reason cited was planned maintenance that will impact the ship’s speed.

As a result, all Port Canaveral excursions were cancelled, and refunds are being processed. Guests will receive a $100 onboard credit.
Also impacted is the ship’s visit to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve on December 3, 2025. MSC Meraviglia will arrive at 11 a.m. rather than at 9 a.m., but she will remain in port until 8:30 p.m. rather than the planned 7 p.m.
The final port call, to Nassau, Bahamas, is unaffected. The ship will return on schedule to New York’s Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on December 7, 2025.
Problems with the 5,714-guest ship’s propulsion system began in May 2025, when a Bahamas cruise was cancelled due to needed repairs.

Guest Arrested For Alleged Assault on Elderly Man
An altercation onboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Encore left one man, himself a lawyer, facing felony charges.
It was embarkation day for a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise sailing roundtrip from PortMiami when Phillip Andrew Ortiz was arrested and removed from the ship by law enforcement.
The suspect, a 38-year-old Florida-based attorney, is charged with battery on a person 65 or older after he allegedly attacked a 67-year-old passenger on November 22, 2025.

According to reports, the victim told Ortiz not to enter a particular hallway because it wasn’t open yet to guests. Unhappy at being told what to do, Ortiz allegedly pushed and/or tripped the older man, and a scuffle ensued, during which the victim fell, hit his head, and was rendered unconscious.
Ortiz apparently fled the scene as other guests began CPR on the elderly man. The ship’s medical team arrived and took over his care; he was taken off the ship and transferred to a hospital.
Meanwhile, Ortiz was quickly located on the ship and arrested by officers from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement that reiterated its policy of zero tolerance for violence of any kind on its ships.
Fugitive Wanted In US Found on Cruise Ship
It isn’t every day that a wanted fugitive is discovered onboard a cruise ship and arrested, but that’s what happened on Star Navigator as she called at Currimao Port, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on November 22, 2025.
Officers with the Philippines Bureau of Immigration (BI) had boarded the ship upon arrival to conduct immigration procedures when they realized that one guest, 54-year-old Tsai Chin Hao, was the subject of an Interpol alert.

Hao, a Taiwanese national, had an outstanding arrest warrant in the US, the contents of which were not disclosed. But the warrant was enough to have him removed from the ship and turned over to the FBI Fugitive Search Unit.
Star Navigator was sailing roundtrip from Taiwan, and Currimao Port was the ship’s only port call.
The 1,856-guest ship sails 2- and 5-night cruises from Taiwan through January 2026. The ship is owned by StarCruises, a brand created in February 2025 when Resorts World Cruises was split into two companies, StarCruises and Dream Cruises.
Hao’s whereabouts are not confirmed, but it is expected that he will be handed over to US authorities.
Preview Visit to Royal Beach Club Is Cancelled
There apparently are a few kinks still to be worked out at Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, since the cruise line has cancelled a preview visit to the destination that was scheduled for December 15, 2025.
The beach club in Nassau is due to open on December 23, 2025 and that is still a firm date, however, a few “sneak preview” visits were scheduled. Now, at least one is nixed due to ongoing construction of the private destination.

Symphony of the Seas was among the ships scheduled to operate a preview cruise to the club, which was to be the first port of call on the ship’s 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary departing December 14, 2025 from PortMiami. The visit is now cancelled.
Royal Caribbean broke ground for the new land-side destination in April 2024. The Bahamian-themed destination will feature children’s play areas, luxury cabana rentals, multiple food and beverage venues, three pools, two beaches, and three swim-up bars.
Once officially opened, guests will pay for day passes that start at $109.99 for those aged 4 to 12 and $129.99 for adults.

The sister ship to Celebrity Xcel will arrive in 2028 following construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. This will be the sixth in the popular Edge-class, including the ever-famous magic Carpet feature on the side of the ship, where guests can dine floating over the water.
In fact, the first piece of steel was cut at the shipyard in France on October 23, so in no time at all, the vessel will come together with major milestones such as the keel laying and outfitting.

Celebrity Seeker (Debuting in 2027)
Celebrity Seeker will be the sister ship of Celebrity Seeker, the first series of vessels that will take the cruise line into a new era of river cruising.

The ship will actually debut just days following its sister ship in November 2027, and they will bring innovative new features, including allowing guests to experience a first-ever cantilevered dining pods!

For the first time, Celebrity Cruises is entering the river cruise market with Celebrity Compass and, of course, its sister ship. This innovative vessel will debut in September 2027 on the rivers of Europe. The ship is being constructed at the TeamCo shipyard in the Netherlands and will have a guest capacity of 180.
Celebrity Xcel (2025)
Celebrity Xcel is a new generation of its popular Edge class. The vessel is the first methanol-capable ship in the fleet and will be roughly 141,400 gross tons. The ship was constructed at the popular Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, and celebrated its keel laying ceremony on June 13, 2024.
Celebrity Xcel on Sea Trials
The naming ceremony took place on November 16, 2025, with the godmother and award-winning chef Janaína Torres. The vessel is already sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with cruises to The Bahamas, Mexico, Cayman Islands, Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.

The newest Celebrity Cruises ship was officially delivered from the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard on November 8, 2023. Celebrity Ascent packs in all of the favorited Edge-class amenities and venues, like the Resort Deck, Magic Carpet (the world’s first cantilevered lounge at sea), Rooftop Garden and more. However, Celebrity Ascent also provides brand-new experiences.

However, while Celebrity Apex did provide new temptations for cruisers, it’s still smaller and less impressive than Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent. If you specifically want to cruise on an Edge-class ship and you have your pick between these three, go with one of the two newer options.

Celebrity Flora is one of Celebrity Cruises’ unique expedition ships. If you’re expecting a traditional cruise ship just like the Edge and Solstice-class ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet… well, don’t. These ships are much, much smaller and designed specifically to offer experiences you just can’t get on a mega-ship.
Celebrity Flora Cruise Ship
When it comes to Celebrity Flora, this ship was designed particularly to cater to travelers taking adventurous trips to the Galapagos Islands. The ship blends luxury with eco-friendly properties.
Even if you don’t consider yourself the adventurous type, you still might like a cruise on this ship. The all-suite vessel only houses 100 guests at double occupancy, so you’ll definitely enjoy a more intimate experience than you might otherwise — and all with a Celebrity Cruises touch of luxury.

Celebrity Edge (2018)

The last and the largest of the Solstice-class ships, Celebrity Reflection stood out due to the inclusion of the first AquaClass suites (aka, suites that come with special spa-inspired amenities), as well as its own, special Reflection Class suites. These suites are only available on Celebrity Reflection and feature extra-high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows for the best views possible.
Certain areas of this ship are also larger than on other Solstice-class ships. There’s an extra deck of staterooms and suites; larger outdoor decks; and a larger theater.

Celebrity Eclipse (2010)
Celebrity Eclipse was scheduled to be refurbished in 2020. However, much of the cruising industry was put on hold during the pandemic.
Because of this, not quite as many updates have been made to this ship, compared to what you’ll see on others. Refurbishments have been limited; for example, in 2021, it received a new paint job.
Also updated as part of Celebrity’s Revolution initiative that brought a good portion of its fleet up to the most modern of standards, Celebrity Equinox was the second Solstice-class ship for the cruise line.
Thanks to refurbishments made in 2019, this ship now features Celebrity Cruises favorites, such as Craft Social, a relatively new dining option on the ships, and The Retreat, Celebrity’s take on a VIP area with suites, a restaurant and more all open solely to those sailing in a Retreat suite. The refurbishments also updated staterooms in general, and added new children’s features, as well as Xcelerate WiFi.

Celebrity Solstice (2008)
As you could probably guess, Celebrity Solstice kicked off Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice class. This ship was not only the largest to be built at a German shipyard when it launched in 2008. It also introduced industry-first features to the cruising industry and Celebrity Cruises in general.

For example, The Lawn Club was introduced and quickly became a staple throughout Celebrity Cruises’ ships. The Lawn Club offers lawn games, casual dining and drinks. The ship also featured a unique form of entertainment that soon spread to other ships in the fleet — the Hot Glass Show, which was developed via a partnership with The Corning Museum of Glass. Other notable features included a 12-deck-tall atrium and a large theater that could fit 1,400 people.
Unfortunately, while Celebrity’s Revolution initiative did impact a large number of the cruise line’s ships, it hasn’t impacted Celebrity Solstice just yet. Because of this, you won’t see certain newer features or design elements on this ship.

The Difference Between Newer and Older Celebrity Cruise Ships
What are the primary differences between the older and newer Celebrity Cruises ships? The differences all come down to a few key factors, including size, luxury, and amenities.
Not only are Celebrity’s newest ships bigger, but they’re also better. Newer ships are decked out with more and more restaurants, entertainment options and even stateroom and suite options.
That said, while these new ships are flashier and more luxurious, that doesn’t make them a perfect fit for every cruiser out there.
If you prefer fewer crowds and are willing to give up some dining and suite options to get that more intimate environment, you may prefer one of Celebrity’s older — but still updated — ships.
What is the Newest Celebrity Cruises Ship?
The newest Celebrity Cruises ship is the line’s fifth Edge-class ship, Celebrity Xcel. This vessel debuted in November 2025 and offers all of the best of the best that Celebrity Cruises has on tap at the current moment. The ship has a passenger capacity of 3,260 at 141,400 gross tons.
What is the Oldest Celebrity Cruises Ship?
The oldest ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet is Celebrity Millennium, which entered service in 2000 — more than two decades ago! Despite the age, though, the ship still manages to be relatively modern and offers Celebrity’s characteristic luxury, thanks to recent renovations that occurred in 2019, bringing the ship up to modern standards.
Ann Evans, previously believed missing in St. Maarten, has been located and appears to have disappeared intentionally.
Evans debarked Rotterdam on November 20 and initially disappeared from an organized bus tour.
Intentionally going “missing” from a cruise ship is not a legal way to emigrate and can be a massive waste of local resources.
The cruise guest missing from Holland America Line’s Rotterdam since November 20 has been located safely in St. Maarten.
While Ann Evans had debarked Rotterdam as part of an organized tour on the morning of Thursday, November 20, she failed to return to the cruise ship.
Further investigation noted that she’d left the tour bus at Marigot, French Saint Martin, but did not return to the bus at that point and was therefore considered missing.
Following up on reports, authorities further traced what they believe to be Evans’ whereabouts in the area.
“Based on information gathered during the investigation, KPSM has reason to believe that a female matching Ms. Evans’ description checked into a hotel on the French side of the island using her passport. She has also reportedly been seen in the surrounding area of that establishment,”an interim update noted.
Following an extensive search and appeals to the public via social media, authorities were able to contact the missing woman and confirm her safety, though no further information will be provided.
“Following coordination between KPSM and other partners, contact has been made with the individual in question.In accordance with the laws governing privacy and the protection of personal data, no additional information will be released about the individual or their circumstances,”the Police Force of St. Maartin confirmed.
Ann Evans, a 55-year-old American woman, was aboard the ship’s 12-night Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, November 16.
The newest ship in the Holland America Line fleet, the Pinnacle-class Rotterdam can welcome up to 4,173 guests onboard when fully booked.
Despite her disappearance, no appeals from family members or friends were made public, and it is unknown why Evans may have chosen to depart the ship in St. Maarten and not return.
Not a Legal Way to Travel
It is not legal for cruise guests to use closed-loop cruises as a means to travel between international destinations with no intent to return to the cruise ship.
To do so causes an immense response from authorities when a missing person is reported, as cruise ships must do when a guest fails to return to the vessel before departure.

This response includes searches and other emergency actions, such as news reports and hospital contacts. In some cases, cruise ships with hundreds or thousands of guests aboard may even be delayed due to the person’s actions.
The situation with Evans is somewhat similar to another recent not-really-missing guest from a cruise ship. In September 2025, Jessica Collins debarked Carnival Horizon in Bonaire and failed to return to the ship for the remainder of the 8-night Southern Caribbean sailing.
While anyone who feels the need to start a new life, regardless of their personal circumstances, may certainly generate sympathy and understanding. Emigration should be followed legally rather than by deceiving hundreds of crew members, local authorities, and other cruise guests, however.
Furthermore, these types of situations could cause changes in local procedures that might actually hinder future searches for guests who may actually be missing and in danger.
Celebrity Cruises’ fleet is broken down into three main classes: the Edge series, Solstice series and Millennium series. Fourteen of the line’s seventeen ships are umbrellaed beneath these three classes, with the remaining three ships being smaller, individual vessels for Galapagos expeditions and river cruising.

While the Edge series ships aren’t necessarily huge by today’s standards (just compare them to mega ships like those operated by Royal Caribbean), they have introduced some cool new features both to Celebrity Cruises and the industry as a whole.
Celebrity Edge
Right at the beginning, Celebrity Edge took things to new heights.
It gave cruisers The Retreat, which is the cruise line’s VIP ship-within-a-ship area. It also brought new stateroom categories to the table, including the state-of-the-art Edge Stateroom with the Infinite Veranda.
If you’ve yet to experience an infinite veranda stateroom for yourself, I’d highly recommend it, at least once. You basically get to enjoy an indoor-outdoor living space, thanks to the ability to lower and raise the exterior window at just the touch of a button.

It’s almost like a balcony, but better, because you don’t have to actually leave your stateroom to enjoy the outdoors. Plus, the infinite veranda staterooms on Edge-class ships are 23% larger than the normal veranda staterooms on Solstice-class ships.
Another groundbreaking feature to debut on Celebrity Edge is the Magic Carpet. These cantilevered platforms sit out over the side of the ship and are used for dining, as social areas, etc.
Then, there’s the Rooftop Garden, which is a lush public space with a restaurant, sculptures and more.
Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond
In 2020, Celebrity Apex brought further new features to the line, including the Craft Social pub. Celebrity Beyond, meanwhile, introduced the line’s Aqua Sky suites, a wellness-focused suite category with spa-associated amenities, including access to The Retreat.
Celebrity Beyond was also a jump in size, weighing in at 10,000-plus greater GT, as compared to prior ships in the class — a trend that continued on with the next two ships.
Both Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent offer larger public spaces, more dining options and nearly 200 more staterooms and suites than the class’s preceding vessels.
Celebrity Xcel and Future Ships
Then, most recently, Celebrity Xcel joined the fleet in November 2025 — and it’s getting great reviews. It continued the trend of expanding the cruise experience, with new features.
At its launch, new dining included Spice Café, replacing the cruise line’s prior Eden Café and offering rotating destination-inspired menus; Mosaic, a fine dining eatery that likewise rotates menus based on itinerary; and Bora, a Greek supper club.
Celebrity Xcel on Sea Trials
Meanwhile, The Bazaar is a new indoor-outdoor space that offers an ever-evolving selection of fun, including marketplace-style shopping, live music, dining and more. There’s also the first-ever Celebrity Flagship store aboard the ship, as well as the new experiences in the spa, like a Hydra Room and Vitamin D deck.
Celebrity’s Edge class is still ongoing, with a sixth ship expected to arrive in 2028: Celebrity Xcite.
Celebrity Solstice Class
The Solstice class is getting up there in age, but these ships are still worth your consideration for an upcoming cruise, as they’ve been renovated and kept up to modern standards — even if they’re not quite as flashy as the most recent, Edge-class ships.

When Celebrity Solstice entered service in 2008, it was significantly bigger than any of the other ships that the cruise line had put out before. Solstice-class vessels measure in at about 30,000 greater GT than Millennium-class ships. They can also hold about 500-plus more passengers, at least.
Celebrity Solstice introduced the Lawn Club, an outdoor space that quickly became a favorite throughout the fleet, as well as new dining, drinking and entertainment.
The Lawn Club features real grass, which felt absolutely groundbreaking at the time of the ship’s launch, and the club is even home to a glass-blowing pavilion, where you can take glass-making classes.

Celebrity Reflection made its own waves, when it introduced the cruise line’s first two-bedroom suite. The Reflection Suite measures in at more than 1,600 square feet.
All of these ships have been refurbished relatively recently, within the last five years. Some have also been outfitted with features and highlights that originally were only available on Edge-class ships, but were later added to older ships when time came up for reno.

Celebrity Millennium was initially intended to be even smaller than it is, but both this ship and Celebrity Infinity arrived weighing in at 91,000 GT, and that was a size the cruise line stuck with for the rest of the vessels in this class.
The Celebrity Millennium was the first ship to debut after Celebrity Cruises’ merging with Royal Caribbean Group.

While all of these ships are old by industry standards, they have been refurbished not once, but multiple times, with upgrades made to bring them up to par. Just as was done with the Solstice class, Millennium vessels have also been updated to include features and venues that were previously only available on newer ships.
Celebrity Flora Class
As mentioned, there are an additional three Celebrity Cruises ships beyond the 14 detailed above.
In the Celebrity Galapagos series, there’s currently just one ship, Celebrity Flora, which debuted in June 2019 and can accommodate just 100 guests with its gross tonnage of 5,739 GT.

The ship serves expedition cruises to — where else? — the Galapagos Islands. The cruise line claims that the ship offers the largest suites out of any ship sailing to the destination.
River Cruises Class
Then, Celebrity Cruises recently announced that it would be delving into the river cruising market. It plans to introduce two river ships in 2027. Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker will both be able to accommodate 172 guests.

Both will set sail on the Rhine and Danube Rivers and the ships will offer some river cruising industry firsts. For example, they’ll feature Magic Edge cantilevered dining pods that float above the water.
They’ll also feature eight restaurants and bars, with 24/7 dining. No other river cruise provider is currently offering that many dining choices or 24/7 dining.
If you prefer the absolute height of innovation and all things new when you cruise, then you’re absolutely going to want to sail on an Edge-class ship, hands down.
If, though, you prefer a smaller size ship and a more intimate setting, you can’t go wrong with one of the older vessels in the fleet. While older ships may not have some of the fanciest features, like the Magic Carpet, they still have everything you need for a top-tier cruise, such as plenty of restaurants, spas, casinos, lounges, etc.
An overboard has been reported from Marella Explorer 2 in the Canary Islands on Thursday, November 27.
A 76-year-old British man is reported overboard and search operations are underway to locate him.
The search was suspended overnight but has resumed on Friday, though no further details have been released.
A worrying situation is developing from Marella Explorer 2 after a 76-year-old British passenger was seen going overboard from the British-operated ship on the morning of Thursday, November 27, 2025.
According to local news, the ship was 16.5 miles northwest of Punta Teno, on the west coast of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. At the time, the vessel was heading back to its homeport of Santa Cruz in Tenerife.
The local Spanish Coast Guard was reportedly contacted at 9:48 a.m. and immediately launched a search operation. Assets include two helicopters, an aircraft, and a patrol boat from La Palma, all coordinating to cover the search area as efficiently as possible.
One passenger from onboard told Cruise Hive that the alarm sounded at 9:45 AM and the vessel returned to search. Here’s footage of the rescue operation underway:
Marella Explorer 2 also aided in search efforts until authorities could take over the efforts sufficiently. Releasing a cruise ship to continue on its itinerary is standard procedure after more specialized assets arrive for the search.
Marella Cruises has confirmed the overboard incident with Cruise Hive:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a guest was seen entering the water while the ship was on passage to La Gomera. Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time. Our dedicated care team is supporting the family, providing assistance and comfort. We are working closely with local authorities and will continue to offer every possible support.”
No further details about the individual, including their name, have been released in order to protect the privacy of family members and friends at this very upsetting time.
Witnesses onboard Marella Explorer 2 have been interviewed about the incident, but no information about any particular circumstances – such as alcohol consumption or potential violence – has been confirmed. Guests did hear the overboard emergency alert when the incident occurred.

Undoubtedly, a full investigation will take place, including reviewing any onboard security footage in the hours before the guest fell overboard.
The 1,814-passenger ship has already returned to Santa Cruz as scheduled on Friday, November 28. The cruise had initially departed seven nights earlier, on Friday, November 21.
Marella Explorer 2 is homeported from the Canary Islands, offering departures from various ports in the islands. The ship was constructed in 1995 as Legend of the Seas with Royal Caribbean, and entered service with Marella Cruises in 2017.
Search to Continue on Friday
While the initial search was called off late on Thursday as darkness impeded efforts, the search was resumed on Friday morning with helicopters.
Search efforts will continue until authorities determine it is either unsafe to do so or else there is little hope of successfully finding the individual.
Unfortunately, these types of situations rarely end with a good result. While it is always hoped that an individual will be recovered alive, the longer someone is in the water without assistance, the less likely it is that they will be found safe.
Overboard incidents are rare when compared to the number of cruise ships and the hundreds of thousands of guests enjoying sailings every day around the world, but they do happen.
Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with the family members and friends of the missing guest, as well as the crew of Marella Explorer 2 at this very troubling time.
Ovation of the Seas is cancelling a port visit and will have a cruise to nowhere to avoid a tropical cyclone.
The only port on the current itinerary from Singapore was to have been Penang, Malaysia.
Instead, guests will enjoy an extra day at sea to remain safely away from the storm’s strongest influence.
The Atlantic hurricane season may end in just three more days, but that doesn’t mean storms are not impacting cruise ships and ports of call.
Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, in fact, is cancelling its only port visit for the sailing that departed on Thursday, November 27, 2025 due to the influence of Tropical Cyclone Senyar.
The Quantum-class ship is homeported from Singapore, offering primarily short 3- and 4-night getaways. Unfortunately, the current sailing will only be a cruise to nowhere because of the need to cancel the planned visit to Penang, Malaysia.
Guests were informed of the itinerary change when they boarded the ship.
“Along with our Meteorologist, Peyton Collado, we’ve been monitoring the development of Tropical Cyclone Senyar along our path to Malaysia,”the notification read.“In order to safely avoid the impact of the storm, we’ll have to skip our visit to Penang, Malaysia and enjoy an additional Sea Day instead.”
The visit to Penang was to have been on Friday, November 28, from 3-9:30 p.m. Because of the short length of the sailing, there are no alternative ports that can be arranged for a suitable visit.
The 168,700-gross-ton Ovation of the Seas is still departing Singapore as planned, and the ship’s return to Singapore is also not impacted by the storm. The ship can welcome 4,180 guests onboard at double occupancy, or up to 4,905 guests when fully booked with all berths filled.
Any pre-booked Royal Caribbean shore excursions for Penang will be automatically cancelled and refunded to guests as onboard credit for the cruise. If the credit is not used, it will be returned to the card on file following debarkation.
Ovation of the Seas is homeported from Singapore through mid-March 2026, at which time she will undergo dry dock refreshment prior to setting sail for the Alaska season with departures from Vancouver and Seward.
In September 2026, Ovation of the Seas will begin homeporting from Los Angeles with Catalina and Ensenada sailings.
What Can Guests Do Instead?
Without a port visit on the current itinerary, guests will have ample time to explore all that Ovation of the Seas has to offer.
