Virgin Voyages will be bringing the lady ships back to Portsmouth International Port in 2024 with a variety of unique itineraries and quick getaways sure to entice passengers interested in the cruise line’s unique adults-only vibe.

The port is eager to welcome back the upscale cruise line, as it brilliantly matches Portsmouth International Port’s goal to be a premier choice for unique sailings that entice discerning passengers.

Virgin Voyages Sailing From Portsmouth in 2024

After first debuting Scarlet Lady from Portsmouth in 2021, followed by Valiant Lady in 2022, Virgin Voyages is now ready to make a return to the southern UK port, just 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of London.

Both Virgin Voyages and Portsmouth International Port have confirmed the sailings:

“The rumours are true, we’re returning to our British roots, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Shane Riley, Virgin Voyages vice president of UK/international sales. “Portsmouth was where we set sail on our maiden voyage and introduced what it means to set sail the Virgin way, so it has a very special place in our hearts.”

“The arrival of Scarlet Lady in Portsmouth back in 2021 heralded not only a new era for cruise at the port, but also for the cruise industry as a whole as Virgin Voyages made their mer-maiden sailing from our historic city,” added Andrew Williamson, head of cruise and ferry at Portsmouth International Port.

“We’re absolutely delighted to reveal the epic news that we will be welcoming them back to the city for a hotly anticipated return.”

Exact details of the new sailings – set to open for bookings on Thursday, September 7, 2023 – are not yet available, but will include brand new ports of call in Bilbao, Spain and Bordeaux, France, as well as stops in Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, Lisbon, Casablanca, Malaga, Ibiza, and more.

Various itinerary lengths are planned, including special “short breaks” for quick getaways as well as longer sailings visiting more destinations.

Which Ship?

Neither the cruise line nor the port have confirmed which of Virgin Voyages’ three ships – to be four with the introduction of Brilliant Lady in December 2023 – may be based from Portsmouth in 2024.

The line’s first vessel, Scarlet Lady, already has itineraries planned from Barcelona through October 2024, while Valiant Lady is scheduled to homeport from Miami. The third ship, Resilient Lady, is planned to be deployed to Australia and New Zealand through March 2024, and then repositioning to Piraeus (Athens) for summer sailings.

No calendars for any of the three currently active ships are available past October 2024, and it is possible any one of them might be redeployed to Portsmouth later in the year.

The upcoming Brilliant Lady, scheduled to debut from Miami on December 24, 2023, will first be homeported from San Juan, Puerto Rico for varying Caribbean itineraries through April 2024. It is possible the new ship could then move to Portsmouth to make her European debut.

In addition to announcing the itineraries, the cruise line has hinted at more news to come in the next week. “The best part is these series of ‘Portsmouth Shorts’ itineraries are just a fraction of the news we have to share,” said Riley. “All I can say is stay tuned for epic news – we’ve got more sailing your way next week!”

Virgin Voyages is a relatively young cruise line, just having debuted with Scarlet Lady in mid-2021 (initially postponed from early 2020 due to the pandemic industry shutdown).

Carnival Ship to Operate Cruise to Nowhere After Storm

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Paradise will not be able to operate the next sailing, what was to have been an August 31, 2023 departure, as planned, due to the late reopening of Port Tampa Bay after Hurricane Idalia.

Instead, the ship will offer a cruise to nowhere, giving guests onboard several compensation benefits and offering a future cruise credit refund for travelers who opt to cancel their getaway.

Carnival Paradise Cruising Without Ports

Port Tampa Bay reopened in the early evening of Thursday, August 31, 2023, but too late for Carnival Paradise to finish the current sailing – a 5-night Bahamas cruise that had visited Bimini and Nassau – on schedule. Instead, the Fantasy-class ship extended its sailing by a day at sea and will return to Tampa on Friday, September 1.

This means the next cruise, originally a 4-night Western Caribbean sailing to visit Cozumel, Mexico, cannot operate as scheduled. The ship will now sail a 3-night cruise to nowhere, offering guests two full days at sea but no ports of call.

Guests on the cruise are asked to keep to their pre-selected arrival appointment time, now arriving at the cruise terminal on Friday rather than Thursday.

Compensation Offered for Shorter Cruise

Carnival Cruise Line is offering significant compensation for guests who choose to continue with the now-shortened sailing.

First, guests who set sail will receive a 1-day refund of their cruise fare, returned to their original form of payment. This may take up to three weeks to process, depending on each guest’s financial institution, and the total amount of the refund will vary based on the overall cruise fare paid.

Similarly, guests who purchased a drinks or Wi-Fi package prior to sailing will also receive a pro-rated refund of those package charges.

All guests will also receive a a refund of any pre-purchased Carnival shore excursions in Cozumel and the taxes, fees, and port expenses that were associated with the now-cancelled visit.

These refunds will be posted to guests onboard Sail & Sign accounts and can be used for onboard purchases, including drinks, photos, souvenirs, and spa treatments.

Worth Reading: Carnival Ship Forced to Sail Cruise to Nowhere Following Storm

All guests will also receive a 50% future cruise credit (FCC) that can be used on a future Carnival Cruise of their choice, as well as an additional $200 (USD) on onboard credit per stateroom aboard their shortened Carnival Paradise cruise.

This is an incredible amount of compensation considering the cruise has only been shortened by a single day, though guests will undoubtedly be disappointed about missing Cozumel and not being able to visit any alternative port of call.

Cancellation an Option

Booked guests can also elect to cancel their cruise rather than setting sail on the shorter sailing, which may be necessary for local travelers who must now contend with the aftermath of the storm.

Guests who cancel must do so no later than 10 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

These travelers will receive a 100% future cruise credit for use on an upcoming Carnival cruise, as well as a full refund (posted back to their original form of payment) of any pre-purchased gifts or services, such as shore tours, beverage packages, or pre-booked spa treatments.

Because Carnival Cruise Line is still operating the sailing, guests who cancel at the last minute – despite the extenuating circumstances – are not entitled to a refund back to their original form of payment.

According to Carnival’s cruise ticket contract, section 8(d), “Carnival may change the duration and/or itinerary of the cruise at any time.” Adverse weather and hurricanes are specifically listed as a potential reason for such changes.

Furthermore, section 8(c) of the cruise ticket contract explicitly states “In the event a voyage is cancelled, shortened, or changed for any reason other than mechanical failure of the Vessel, Guest shall be entitled to a future cruise credit.”

Guests who have purchased travel insurance may want to consult their individual policies about possible reimbursement or additional compensation, depending on the coverage they selected.

In the latest installment of the video series ‘Making an Icon,’ the cruise line unveils what promises to be an immersive drinking experience, carefully crafted to please every type of guest.

Crafting a Diverse Beverage Experience

Besides a massive array of swimming pools, the largest waterpark at sea, and many more exciting prospects onboard Icon of the Seas, one of the areas that Royal Caribbean International is paying a lot of attention to is its beverage program. 

In the newest episode of Royal Caribbean’s web series ‘Making an Icon,’ the cruise line explains how it has developed a completely new line-up of beverage experiences for young and old onboard its new LNG-powered cruise ship.

According to the video, the team sought to balance choice, convenience, and variety, offering more than 60 brand-new cocktails designed explicitly for Icon of the Seas across more than 15 bars and lounges spread out across the vessel.

Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International: “You have to find the right blend of beverage experiences. There’s the party, there’s the bar, there’s the swim-up bar, and then we have, you know, traditional spaces and places for wine or for cocktails.”

“When you make the statement, the ultimate family vacation, you’ve really got to make sure you tick every single part.” An array of experts in architecture, food, beverage entertainment, and more spent months researching, testing, and refining the ship’s beverage options.

Vast Array of Beverage Options

Icon of the Seas‘ 15 bars and lounges will each have its own identity. The venues were designed to suit any mood or vibe, from Lou’s Jazz‘n Blues, to a champagne window called ‘Bubbles’ in Central Park.

Notably, the ship will also host the first bar for adults and kids, ‘Lemon Post,’ offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Old favorites such as The Attic, Music Hall, Trellis Bar, Boleros, and the Schooner Bar will also be present onboard.

Perhaps one of the most exciting additions is a multi-purpose elevated lounge called ‘The Overlook’ in the AquaDome. The elevated lounge also introduces what Royal calls ‘pods’ – intimate spaces where friends can enjoy a drink or simply kick back and listen to live music.

As for non-alcoholic choices, the same care has been extended as in the alcoholic program. The focus is on exciting and thematic non-alcoholic beverages that align with the venue’s personality.

The culinary team didn’t hold back on desserts either; a milkshake bar called ‘Dessert’ promises an array of ‘freak shakes’ topped with cakes, cookies, sprinkles, and candies.

Update on Icon of the Seas

With the various episodes of ‘Making an Icon’ making guests eager to sail onboard, they will need to wait a little longer. Under construction in Finland, the ship has already completed its first set of sea trials, and another set of trials is expected to occur later this year.

Icon of the Seas, at 250,800 gross tons, will be the world’s biggest cruise ship and a ship that will define what cruising can be in this day and age. The first cruise sets sail on January 27, 2024, with the ship sailing on alternating cruises to the eastern and western Caribbean from PortMiami.

Icon of the Seas aims to be a vessel where every family member, irrespective of age, finds something to their taste—be it adventure, relaxation, or the perfect drink. The cruise line sets the stage for what seems to be a cruise experience where every sip tells a story.

Norwegian Cruise Line to Resume Calls to Destination Hit by Wildfires

Norwegian Cruise Line announced that Pride of America, a ship deployed year-round in the Hawaiian Islands, will resume visits to Maui in September.

The line had suspended port calls to the island following the wildfires that decimated west Maui and the port town of Lahaina in early August 2023.

Pride of America Will Return to Maui in September

Pride of America, the Norwegian Cruise Line ship that plies the waters of the Hawaiian Islands, is scheduled to resume port calls on September 3, 2023, to Maui, where catastrophic wildfires that erupted on August 8 burned more than 2,000 acres, destroyed the beach town of Lahaina, and caused the tragic deaths of more than 100 people.

The 2,186-guest ship, which entered service in 2002, routinely called at Kahului, Maui, located roughly 25 miles east of Lahaina and outside the burn area.

Even though the ship’s itineraries, which are all 7-night cruises, do not include Lahaina, the cruise line had paused its island visits to avoid stressing any local resources on Maui.

“We have a strong connection with the people and islands of Hawaii and long history of bringing guests from all over the world year-round to this paradise in the Pacific,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

“When we heard of the tragic wildfires, we were quick to mobilize our network to support local recovery efforts in Maui.  We temporarily adjusted our itineraries to avoid stressing the destination further,” Herrera added.

The September 3 visit to Maui will be the ship’s first port call on a cruise departing on September 2. All cruises are roundtrip from Honolulu, Oahu. Other port calls on the itinerary are Hilo and Kona, Big Island, Hawaii; and Nawiliwili, Kauai.

Cruise Brands Donate to Maui Residents

The cruise line president said the decision to return to Maui was made in collaboration with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and state Governor Josh Green.

Herrera also noted that the line has donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and, along with partners, is contributing more than $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to island residents affected by the fires.

Other cruise lines also have donated funds and/or planned fundraising events for the residents of Maui, including Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line.

“We appreciate the continued partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line, and the support it has recently provided to aid the recovery of the residents of Lahaina,” said Gov. Green.

“While travel to west Maui is restricted to returning residents and emergency responders, we are working with our tourism partners, such as Norwegian Cruise Line, and encouraging them to make a steady return to other areas of the island and throughout the rest of the state,” added Green.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority said that Maui is dependent on the return of tourists to keep local people employed and businesses operating.

“We are encouraging travelers and visitor industry companies, such as Norwegian Cruise Line, to make a responsible return to the island, visiting the many areas that were not impacted by the fires and are welcoming travelers back,” said Kalani Ka’anā’anā, chief brand officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Cruise Line Replaced Maui Call With Big Island

Norwegian Cruise Line on August 11 announced it would alter itineraries through the remainder of August and began informing booked guests of the changes. In place of the Maui visit, Pride of America instead called at Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii.

During her altered sailings in August, Pride of America overnighted in Hilo and at Nawiliwili, on Kauai, and added scenic cruising along the Nepali Coast of Kauai. Cruises affected by the altered itineraries were departures on August 12, 19, and 26.

Norwegian Cruise Line is the only line to sail entirely within the Hawaiian Islands, however, other lines call at the islands’ ports on itineraries that begin elsewhere, usually from US West Coast ports.

Among them was Princess Cruises, which altered an Emerald Princess itinerary that was to call at Lahaina on August 14, but instead visited the Big Island. The 3,080-guest ship had departed Los Angeles on a 16-night Hawaiian Islands cruise on August 5.

Celebrity Cruise Ship Assists in Rescue of Over 200 Refugees

While sailing in the Ionian Sea on an Italy, Turkey, and Greek Islands cruise, Celebrity Beyond was called to assist the Italian Coast Guard with the rescue of more than 200 migrants from a drifting vessel.

The cruise ship was able to successfully render all aid necessary and continue on its itinerary with only a slight delay.

Celebrity Beyond Responds to Call for Assistance

Celebrity Cruises’ newest Edge-class ship, Celebrity Beyond, received a call for assistance from the Italian Coast Guard while sailing between Sicily and Greece in the Ionian Sea, requesting that the cruise ship provide wind protection for a rescue operation in progress. The call came in at 9:13 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The ship immediately responded and changed course as requested to rendezvous 6 nautical miles (7 miles / 11 kilometers) southeast of Celebrity Beyond‘s route. The cruise ship was on scene within 20 minutes.

The 21-deck cruise ship was asked to position itself to provide shelter from winds and rough seas while two Italian Coast Guard vessels completed rescuing the stranded individuals from a fishing boat, which had more than 200 individuals without life jackets.

Guests onboard Celebrity Beyond were kept informed with updates from the ship’s cruise director as the operation progressed. By 10:50 a.m., all individuals in danger had been evacuated from the stranded fishing vessel.

“When it comes to rescuing life at sea, the operation might be complex but the idea behind it is very simple,” said Kate McCue, Celebrity Beyond’s captain. “Maritime law, particularly the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea states that the master of a ship at sea is bound to proceed with all speed to the assistance of persons in distress upon receiving a signal from any source.”

“We are required to render assistance to those in danger,” she explained, “as long as we are able to do so without endangering the vessel, or the people on board.”

In total, Celebrity Beyond‘s participation in the rescue was approximately 90 minutes, after which the ship was released to resume its voyage without any lasting impact to the itinerary.

Mediterranean Rescues

While rescues in the Caribbean are often noted between Cuba and the United States (where Celebrity Beyond performed two refugee rescues in one week earlier this year), Mediterranean rescues are less frequently recognized.

These incidents are happening with increasing frequency, however, and while the nationalities and individual circumstances are not detailed, often they are refugees seeking better lives in different countries.

FrontEx, the border guard for the European Union, notes that the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the main migratory routes for refugees into Europe, with more than 17,000 illegal border crossings in the region from January through July in 2023.

The Central Mediterranean route, which can lead to Sicily, has already seen more than 89,000 illegal border crossings this year.

As with migrant refugee rescues in the Caribbean and the Straits of Florida separating the US from Cuba, refugees are typically repatriated to their home countries.

The 141,420-gross ton Celebrity Beyond is currently sailing throughout those regions with a series of cruises to Croatia, Montenegro, Turkey, Italy, and Greece, homeporting from Rome (Civitavecchia).

In October, the ship will reposition via a 14-night transatlantic sailing from Rome to Fort Lauderdale, visiting Italy, France, Spain, Bermuda, and the Bahamas along the way. From Port Everglades, Celebrity Beyond will begin offering a variety of Caribbean, Panama, and Bahamas sailings.

Celebrity Beyond joined the Celebrity Cruises fleet in November 2022 and can welcome 3,260 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 3,937 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Onboard are 1,400 crew members to deliver truly star-struck service for all guests.

While the ship is the third in the innovative Edge class and currently the newest in the Celebrity Cruises fleet, she will soon be joined by her sister ship, Celebrity Ascent, when the new vessel debuts in December 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line Provides Urgent Hurricane Fleet Update

With so many ships sailing in regions impacted by the far-reaching Hurricane Idalia, Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests to provide an update for voyages in the next few days.

This covers not only itinerary adjustments, but homeport operations and when guests can expect to hear about their upcoming cruises.

Four Carnival Cruise Homeports Impacted by Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia, currently a Category 1 storm and moving northeast through southern Georgia, has already impacted multiple cruises and is having an affect on four of Carnival Cruise Line’s homeports: Port Tampa Bay, Port Canaveral, Jaxport, and Port of Charleston.

With many cruises either already underway or planning to set sail during the busy Labor Day weekend in the next few days, Carnival has provided an overview of operations and how different sailings are affected. These details can be helpful to guests who are concerned about their travels and whether or not to plan for adjustments.

Sailings From Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay remains at Port Condition Zulu and closed to all marine traffic. While Hurricane Idalia has passed the region, the storm’s large wind field continues to affect weather conditions in Tampa Bay.

Carnival Paradise is currently sailing a 5-night Bahamas itinerary and is at sea on Wednesday, August 30, returning to Tampa as planned and a safe distance from the storm. While Port Tampa Bay is closed at the moment, the ship is not scheduled to arrive until Thursday, August 31.

“We are planning to return to Tampa once the post storm assessment is completed and we are cleared for entry,” the cruise line’s update stated.

As for the next sailing – a 4-night Western Caribbean cruise to Cozumel – guests are advised not to go to the cruise terminal until the schedule is confirmed, which should happen shortly after the port reopens. Carnival Cruise Line is planning to update booked guests by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30.

Sailings From Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral also remains at Port Condition Zulu, completely closed. Three Carnival ships are impacted from the central Florida homeport: Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, and Mardi Gras.

Both Carnival Liberty and Carnival Freedom are safely away from the port on sailings – a 4-night Bahamas cruise and a 5-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, respectively. Carnival Liberty should return to Port Canaveral on Friday, September 1, while Carnival Freedom will return on Saturday, September 2. At this time, there are no changes for either vessel.

Similarly, Mardi Gras is sailing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed Port Canaveral on Saturday, August 26. After visits to San Juan, Amber Cove, and Grand Turk, the ship is scheduled to return as planned on Saturday.

For all three vessels, the next sailings are still on schedule with no alterations, and the cruise line will reach out to booked guests with more details on Wednesday.

Sailings From Jacksonville

Jaxport is closed at Port Condition Zulu but anticipates reopening on Thursday, August 31, pending safety inspections and reopening authorization.

Only one Carnival ship, Carnival Elation, is sailing from Jacksonville, and the Fantasy-class vessel – the oldest in Carnival’s fleet – is enjoying a 5-night cruise to the Bahamas that should return to Jaxport on Thursday as planned.

Guests booked on the next sailing, however, are advised to wait for confirmation from Carnival Cruise Line before proceeding to the cruise terminal on Thursday, in case of unexpected delays. Text alerts are available to keep guests informed of any updates.

Sailings From Charleston

Port of Charleston is also at Port Condition Zulu and closed. Only Carnival Sunshine is sailing from the South Carolina cruise port, and the ship is currently on a 5-night Bahamas sailing that left Charleston on Monday, August 28.

The ship is sailing its planned itinerary well out of the storm’s path, and should return as planned on Saturday, September 2. By that time, Idalia should be long since back out to sea.

At this time, there are no plans to change the September 2, 2023 departure for Carnival Sunshine – another 5-night Bahamas cruise visiting Nassau and Half Moon Cay – but the cruise line will provide updates if necessary.

Impacts Onboard Ships

While the storm’s timing has been fortuitous and there have been only minimal impacts on most cruises, Carnival Cruise Line is nonetheless ensuring that the safety and comfort of guests and crew members remain the highest priority.

For onboard operations, this can mean adjusting sailing speeds or routes to keep vessels in the calmest waters possible. If weather does worsen, open decks are closed and outdoor activities moved to indoor venues or rescheduled.

Guests onboard various ships are also being notified of rough weather via letters delivered to their staterooms. “In partnership with our Fleet Operations Center in Miami, we are actively monitoring Hurricane Idalia,” the letters state.

“As everyone’s safety is our priority, we will continue to monitor the weather and provide you with timely updates if anything changes.”

The letters also address weather conditions as they may be felt on the ship. “As we sail, you may feel added movement to the ship,” the letter provided to Carnival Paradise guests explains.

“Our highly trained and experienced officers will do everything possible to minimize any discomfort. For everyone’s safety, please take extra precaution while walking around and use handrails when possible.”

As the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season approaches (historically around September 10), all cruise travelers should remain alert to weather conditions if they have sailings planned, and stay flexible with their travel expectations in case of last-minute delays, adjustments, or cancellations.

Overboard Reported From World’s Largest Cruise Ship

An overboard incident has been reported from the world’s largest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas, as the vessel was sailing just south of Cuba on a modified itinerary due to Hurricane Idalia.

Few details are known at this time about the circumstances of the overboard or ongoing search operations.

Emergency Call on Wonder of the Seas

Guests onboard the current sailing of Wonder of the Seas have reported an “Oscar Oscar Oscar” emergency call on the evening of Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at approximately 9 p.m. Eastern Time. This emergency code signifies an overboard situation.

After the call, the cruise ship slowed and retraced its route, spending approximately three hours engaged in search operations, using spotlights, small craft, and watchers. The incident occurred while the ship was roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Santiago de Cuba on the island’s south shore.

Few details from the situation have been officially announced, and it is not known whether or not the overboard individual could be a crew member or passenger, what age they are, or other circumstances that may have led to the incident. It is also possible the emergency might have been initiated by a witness spotting someone already in the water.

To further complicate the situation, an unrelated medical emergency has forced Wonder of the Seas to suspend the search and head quickly for Grand Cayman, which is not on the ship’s itinerary.

Online tracking data confirms the ship’s search efforts and subsequent turn toward Grand Cayman, heading for the island at close to top speed.

Wonder of the Seas is currently sailing a modified 7-night Western Caribbean cruise that departed Port Canaveral on Sunday, August 27. The ship’s original itinerary was to have visited CocoCay, Cozumel, Honduras, and Costa Maya.

Due to the influence of Hurricane Idalia, the itinerary was modified with Honduras cancelled and Cozumel moved to later in the sailing. At no time was Wonder of the Seas scheduled to visit Grand Cayman.

Currently the world’s largest passenger cruise ship, the 236,857-gross ton, Oasis-class Wonder of the Seas can welcome 5,734 guests at double occupancy, and as many as 6,988 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also aboard are 2,300 international crew members to provide service for memorable cruise vacations.

Recent Overboards

There have been a number of overboard incidents in recent months, from a variety of cruise lines and in different areas of the world.

In mid-August, a male passenger went overboard from Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess near Hilo, Hawaii, during a 16-night sailing.

Near Singapore, a female guest went overboard from Royal Caribbean International’s Spectrum of the Seas in late July, and after an unsuccessful search, was declared deceased. Video footage from the incident seemed to confirm the overboard was sadly intentional.

Similarly, a guest went intentionally overboard from Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Elation in late July, while the ship was returning to its Jacksonville, Florida homeport after a Bahamas cruise. That search was ended unsuccessfully.

Such incidents are always upsetting not only to the friends and family members of the individuals involved, but also to guests and crew members who witness search efforts and emergency responses during what they had hoped would be a fun and relaxing cruise vacation.

When an overboard alert is initiated, multiple search measures are immediately undertaken, including a roll call of passengers and crew members onboard, reviewing security footage of cameras monitoring the sides of the ship, and contacting local authorities for assistance if possible.

Carnival Cruise Line Offers Discount After Drinks Package Glitch

Following a technical glitch that miscalculated the cost of the Cheers! beverage program on August 25 and 26, Carnival Cruise Line has extended a discount offer as compensation for the confusion.

The offer is a non-transferable, limited-time opportunity and while it can be a nice saving, it is nowhere near the great deal the glitch seemed to create.

Carnival Offering Drinks Discount

Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests who booked the inadvertently discounted Cheers! drink package over the weekend. A technical issue inaccurately priced the drinks package upon checkout, calculating the total price for only a single day, regardless of the length of the cruise the package was being purchased for.

As a matter of interest, Cheers! can only be booked for a full cruise and may not be purchased for individual days. Because of this calculation error, checkout prices were showing astonishingly low rates for Cheers! – as much as an 86% off for a 7-night sailing.

While the prices were clearly an error, many eager travelers quickly booked their packages in the hopes that the cruise line might honor the inadvertent pricing, as happened with a similar Royal Caribbean International error in July 2019.

Carnival, however, is not honoring the very obviously erroneous price, but is offering a discount to impacted guests all the same.

All guests who had booked the wrongly-priced packages are having those transactions refunded back to the original form of payment, but can rebook Cheers! with a one-time, non-transferrable 10% discount code. “We apologize for the confusion and thank you for your understanding,” the notification email read.

Guests must act quickly to redeem the 10% discount, however, as the codes will only be valid for a limited time. Codes are also only valid for adults in the impacted staterooms, and the discount cannot be applied to other drink package options or onboard purchases.

Guests should also be aware of the complete transactions with the faulty Cheers! pricing have been cancelled and refunded, even if other items such as Wi-Fi packages, spa treatments, or shore tours were purchased simultaneously.

“If you purchased any other items in the same transaction as Cheers!, you will need to return to Carnival.com and place your order for these items again,” the email explained.

No discounts are being offered for anything other than the Cheers! package, even if other items were cancelled on the same transaction.

How the Savings Compare

While a 10% discount code is certainly less outstanding than what could have been a discount of as much as 86%, it is still a nice savings on the Cheers! beverage package.

The package rate is currently $59.95 (USD) per day when purchased before cruising, or $64.95 per day when purchased on a Carnival ship. An 18% service charge is added to the package.

As it appears the discount is only valid for pre-cruise purchases, over the course of a 7-night cruise, guests using the code would save $41.96 if the discount is applied prior to the gratuity service charge, or $49.52 if the discount is also applied to the service charge.
