Severe Storm Keeps Cruise Ship in Port for Days

Severe weather can impact cruise itineraries in any part of the world, and as Storm Bert has pummeled the UK, sailings in the region are not unaffected. In fact, Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition has been held in port long past her expected departure due to the closure of the Port of Tilbury and regional weather conditions.

Guests onboard the 48,123-gross-ton vessel have been kept apprised of discussions and why the ship has been unable to depart, with regular updates as to the ongoing challenges.

“Good evening. As has been widely reported, Storm Bert has begun impacting various parts of the UK, with winds of up to 30 knots reported in our home port in Essex and gusts reaching over 50 knots,” the first notification to guests on Saturday, November 23 read.

“After consulting with the Port of London and the Port of Tilbury, we have been advised that the weather conditions are too dangerous for Ambition to depart on the Amsterdam & Antwerp City Break as planned at 2000 this evening. The port is now closed to all vessels.”

While the ship is safe and all onboard operations – entertainment, restaurants, activities, etc. – remain as scheduled, the ship has been unable to depart on the 3-night mini-cruise as planned.

Further updates made on Sunday morning and afternoon clarified the poor weather’s impact on the sailing.

“We remain in discussions with the Port of Tilbury and the Port of London Authority, without who’s permission we will not be able to depart even if the winds subside to below the required level of 30 knots,” the morning update noted.

“We are hopeful to be able to bring you more positive news later this afternoon, with a pilot now onboard in the event that the weather conditions improve and we are able to sail to Antwerp in the early evening for an arrival tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, the conditions by Sunday evening had not improved enough for the ship to depart. Furthermore, even if the ship could leave, the conditions in crossing the North Sea would be very uncomfortable and potentially hazardous, while local tides would no longer be suitable for the river transit to Antwerp.

“We understand that this news may be disappointing for Ambition guests, but we would rather remain in port than risk safety on any North Sea crossing or attempt to access Antwerp at a time when the tides will not be in our favour. Thank you so much for your understanding,” the latest notification read.

This means Ambition will remain at the Port of Tilbury until Tuesday morning, when the ship was originally scheduled to have returned from the small break.

Satellite tracking data confirms that the vessel remains in place docked in Tilbury on Sunday night. At this time, the ship would be unable to reach any port of call while still returning for debarkation as planned on Tuesday, November 26.

Ambition – formerly AIDAmira of AIDA Cruises – can welcome 1,248 travelers at double occupancy, or up to 1,727 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are approximately 670 international crew members.

Despite the weather-related disruption to the current short sailing, Ambassador Cruise Line’s top priority is the safety and well-being of all travelers and crew. Ultimately, all decisions are made to ensure everyone is as safe and comfortable as possible in these challenging conditions.

Storm Bert Update

Storm Bert has brought severe flooding and strong winds across much of the UK, with winds reaching 60-70 miles per hour in some places. Coastal areas are especially prone to stronger winds.

Furthermore, high rainfall totals – estimated to be as much as a typical month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours – have contributed to more than 100 regional flood warnings.

In northern areas, heavy snowfall has been recorded, and as the snow melts, it will further add to the flooding concerns.

Road closures, travel disruptions, and power outages have been common through the weekend, though emergency crews are working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible.

The most severe weather was easing Sunday evening, but challenging conditions are expected to continue through Monday as the storm system gradually moves out of the region by early Tuesday.

At this time, there are no expected changes to Ambition‘s next sailing scheduled to depart the Port of Tilbury on Tuesday, November 26. The 16-night sailing will visit Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands before returning to the UK on Thursday, December 12.

Bar Harbor Recount Confirms Rejection of Cruise Cap Increase

By a margin slimmer than a cruise ship ID card, residents of Bar Harbor, Maine, have indeed rejected the increase of a cap on cruise ship visitors. The results follow a resident-requested recount, which has verified the vote totals that – while small – still firmly reject the measure.

The recount of Amendment 4 was carried out after local restauranteur Kevin DesVeaux requested the verification. Local entrepreneurs like DesVeaux rely heavily on local tourism, including via cruise ship visits.

The official recount was conducted on Saturday, November 23, 2024 and in accordance with local regulations. The Town Clerk supervised the hand counting of the ballots, which was done in public for full transparency and verification.

The 3,653 total ballots were sorted and counted. The final recount confirmed 1,714 ballots in favor of the measure, while 1,779 ballots opposed the amendment. The remaining 160 ballots were blank on the amendment.

This means the rejection of Amendment 4 stands by a difference of just 65 votes, and there will be no increase in the cap of cruise ship guests permitted to disembark at Bar Harbor. At the moment, that cap is set at no more than 1,000 passengers per day.

Larger cruise ships, then, must bypass the scenic stop in favor of ports that welcome greater numbers of visitors, such as Rockland and Portland. This can significantly impact local businesses, but other tourists are welcome to arrive via bus or car without difficulty.

The town of Bar Harbor will also lose out on revenue from cruise ship taxes and port fees, though smaller ships will still be permitted to visit and will pay the associated fees.

This measure has been a contentious one, facing different challenges since it was first passed in November 2022. Previously, the cap had been 3,500, while the measure voted on just three weeks ago would have set a slightly lower cap of 3,200.

Bar Harbor, which is located approximately 120 miles northeast of Portland and 40 miles southeast of Bangor, is adjacent to Acadia National Park, a top destination in the Pine Tree State.

Cruise ship guests often enjoy tours, hikes, and other experiences in the park, which is one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the US. In 2023, more than 3.8 million guests visited Acadia National Park.

Why Reject Larger Ships?

Many different communities in different parts of the world – Alaska, Spain, California, Iceland, Greece, etc. – have explored measures to limit cruise ship visits in recent years.

These efforts come as ships get larger and larger. Just 10 years ago, the world’s largest cruise ships were the first two of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels. Oasis of the Seas (2009) and Allure of the Seas (2010) measure roughly 226,000 gross tons and can carry 6,780 guests each when fully booked, but they were the only ships able to do so at that time.

Today, those same two ships have four additional sister ships and are eclipsed by the even larger, 249,000-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, which can carry 7,600 passengers when fully booked. Furthermore, other cruise lines have also built larger ships with larger capacities.

Most cruise lines are building larger and larger ships, and even more luxury and expedition cruise lines are gradually expanding their capacity.

By comparison, the town of Bar Harbor has a population of just over 5,000 residents. For the town to receive even smaller ships carrying several hundred passengers can potentially be overwhelming to the downtown area and local resources, especially when other tourists arrive by land-based means.

It is possible that future measures may be introduced to adjust Bar Harbor’s cruise visitor cap once more. Each one will undoubtedly be subject to similar legal challenges and close margins as the community chooses what works best for its residents.

San Juan Celebrates Inaugural Ship Calls from Princess and Ritz-Carlton

The San Juan Cruise Port is celebrating an important stepping stone in its mission for growth. 

Not one, but two cruise ships have just made their debut in Puerto Rico’s capital city in what will be the beginning of a lasting and fruitful relationship. 

Ritz-Carlton Ilma, which is a super yacht from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, made its inaugural call on the popular cruise port on November 14, 2024 – at the end of a 13-night Transatlantic sailing from Lisbon, Portugal. 

For the 448-guest vessel, this inaugural visit marks the beginning of its 2024-2025 Caribbean season – during which she will homeport in San Juan. 

Indeed, the 790-foot yacht will operate eleven sailings out of San Juan between November 2024 to March 2025 – generating an estimated $1.7 million in revenue for the local economy. 

These sailings will feature calls on popular ports like Bridgeton, Barbados; Soufriere, St Lucia Island; Portsmouth, Dominica; Gustavia, Saint Barthélemy; and Tortola, British Virgin Islands. 

Just a few days later on November 19, 2024, Sun Princess – the newest addition to the Princess Cruises’ fleet – made her inaugural call on the cruise port. 

While she is homeporting in Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida, her debut marks the first of five scheduled visits during the main Caribbean cruising season – which runs annually from December to April when the risk of severe storms is at its lowest. 

The 177,882-gross ton ship has already started alternating between week-long voyages to the Western and Eastern Caribbean – while simultaneously operating 14-night sailings that include both of the shorter itineraries. 

Each visit from the Sphere-class ship will bring 5,189 passengers and 1,550 crew members to the port – bolstering the local tourism and hospitality industries. 

Across all the Princess ships sailing in the Caribbean in the 2025 fiscal year, the brand is expected to bring 122,000 passengers to San Juan with 34 planned ship calls – generating over $1.7 million. 

Inaugural Ship Calls Signal Growth

The San Juan Port, which is grouped into two terminals and four cruise ship piers, has been working hard to promote growth and reach – or exceed – its pre-pandemic numbers.

In 2019, San Juan received approximately 1.8 million cruise guests. But as recently as 2023, that number was closer to 1.3 million cruisers. 

That said, the debut of Ritz-Carlton Ilma and Sun Princess are a positive sign of growth for both the cruise port and the local economy. 

“The inclusion of San Juan in the itineraries of these iconic vessels strengthens our tourism sector and contributes to the Island’s economic growth by diversifying and expanding our luxury travel offerings,” said Carlos Mercado Santiago, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Traditional plaque exchange ceremonies were also held to celebrate the inaugural calls for both cruise ships with government representatives and port executives present – during which representatives from Princess Cruises reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering cruise tourism in Puerto Rico.

The cruise port also recently began construction for a $100 million improvement plan – officially breaking ground on the project on September 25, 2024. 

The project – which comes as a result of a 30-year concession contract with a port management firm called Global Ports Holding (GPH) – will include repairs made to Pier 4 and the Pan American Piers, as well as to the existing cruise terminals. 

That said, GPH  – which operates 32 cruise ports globally – is already planning a second round of financing to create two new cruise port areas. 

These would be the Old San Juan District, including Piers 1 and 4 which are mainly for transit calls, and the Homeport District, which would include Piers 11-14 and the Pan American piers.

When all is said and done, GPH estimates that its total investment in improving the San Juan Port could reach $425 million. 

50 Carnival-Owned Cruise Ships Now Have New Casino System

Hitting the jackpot just got a whole lot easier for cruise passengers on Carnival Corporation ships. Maybe.

Casino table games developer Galaxy Gaming has announced its Galaxy Operating System (GOS) is now available on over 50 vessels, featuring advanced jackpot programs that grow as players place bets, creating larger potential winnings.

The new system also features nebula sensors to provide accurate betting and winnings data and digital management tools.

“The innovative GOS technology not only elevates the quality of our gaming offerings but also ensures that our customers enjoy a seamless and engaging experience throughout their voyage,” said Dave Thomas, vice president for North American gaming operations at Carnival Corporation.

The rollout of the GOS has Carnival Corporation expanding its gaming offerings for its passengers on its cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Seabourn, and Costa Cruises.

The new jackpot gaming system has already paid out over $5 million in winnings, according to Galaxy Gaming.

“We are thrilled that the deployment of our GOS system, along with our joint efforts to create engaging player experiences, has brought a best-in-class table games experience to [Carnival Corporation] casino players across the entire fleet,” said Galaxy Gaming’s President and CEO Matt Reback.

However, the new technology is not without its controversy. Although the advanced jackpot progressives allow for larger jackpots that attract more players, the digital tracking tools and sensors also allow casinos to better understand player behavior.

This means casinos can optimize games to maximize their profits.

The dynamic payout technology also allows casinos to offer enticing odds, while keeping the house edge intact, making it a bit harder for passengers to win.

The Perks and Pitfalls of Gaming at Sea

Casinos play a big role in the gaming industry, which, in the US reached a record-breaking $66.5 billion in 2023 at land-based operations. This included traditional casinos, which generated $49.4 billion.

Sports betting and online gaming also added to the gaming industry high, bringing in nearly $11 billion and $6.2 billion, respectively.

Cruise lines, however, sail in international waters and are not subject to the same regulations so data on casino revenue is harder to come by. Instead, these figures are added into onboarding spending, which Royal Caribbean recently said accounted for approximately 35 percent of its total revenue in the third quarter of 2024.

Carnival Corporation ships have a variety of games at its casinos, such as slot machines, poker, and blackjack, and caters to all skill levels, from beginners at slot machines to seasoned players competing in poker tournaments. Some cruises even offer free lessons to encourage participation.

High rollers can take advantage of VIP perks, such as access to exclusive tables and complimentary drinks. Carnival Cruise Line, for example, features its Carnival Players Club and members receive invitations to exclusive events, access to special promotions, and, yes, free drinks while playing.

The program features various tiers that offering bigger rewards the more guests play and the more guests win. For instance, Elite cruisers may receive perks like free parking, complimentary shore excursions, and beverage packages.

On Holland America Line, it’s the Ocean Players Club, which has similar tiers and rewards. Additionally, the cruise line has a Casino Players Match program to compete at other casinos to win free cruises.

However, gambling at sea isn’t without its downsides. Odds on slot machines are notoriously less favorable than those at gaming hubs on land, and payouts can vary widely depending on the cruise.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Arrives for First Season in Asia

Anthem of the Seas officially dropped anchor in Asia on November 21, 2024, kicking off its inaugural season with a splash. 

The 168,666-gross-ton Royal Caribbean ship is now on her first Asian voyage, a 4-night cruise to Penang, Malaysia, and Phuket, Thailand, in the first of a series of roundtrip itineraries through April 13, 2025.

While not the first time the cruise line has homeported in Singapore (that would be Legend of the Seas in 2008) and not the largest vessel calling the city home (that would be the Quantum Ultra-Class Spectrum of the Seas in 2022), the occasion was still momentous as Royal Caribbean continues to grow its presence in Asia.

“We’re thrilled to bring Anthem to the region and look forward to welcoming holidaymakers onboard as they embark on new adventures with Royal Caribbean,” said Royal Caribbean’s Chad Grospe, vice president, Asia-Pacific.

The ship’s itineraries from Singapore include 30 voyages ranging from 3-night short trips to Malaysia and Thailand to a 10-night Southeast Asia adventure. 

The debut season offers guests a chance to explore cultural landmarks such as George Town’s colonial architecture in Penang, coastal cities like Ho Chi Minh City, and island destinations like Phuket’s Phi Phi Islands.

“Whether it’s a short 3- to 4-night escape or a longer adventure to fan-favorite destinations across Malaysia, Thailand, and more, every type of holidaymaker can look forward to a variety of experiences on deck, from showstopping entertainment to restaurants and spots to grab a bite with flavors from around the world,” Grospe added.

The arrival of Anthem of the Seas reflects Royal Caribbean’s focus on connecting with Asian travelers, especially younger generations and families traveling together. The cruise line recently revealed that nearly half of its guests are Millennials or Gen Z, many of whom are experiencing cruising for the first time.

Anthem of the Seas’ appeal to younger passengers includes features like the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, the North Star observation capsule, and entertainment like the Olivier Award-winning musical, “We Will Rock You.”

For dining, the 4,180-passenger vessel brings a mix of international flavors, including Mediterranean-inspired cuisine at Solarium Bistro, Japanese options at Izumi, and creative dishes at Wonderland.

The ship replaces sister ship, Quantum of the Seas, which left Singapore on November 19, 2024, to begin a season in Australia.

Singapore Becoming a Premier Hub

Royal Caribbean has been actively expanding its presence in Asia, particularly in Singapore. In November 2019, the cruise line began a five-year, multimillion-dollar marketing collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board and Changi Airport Group to promote fly-cruise tourism.

This partnership aimed to generate over S$430 million in tourism between 2019 and 2024. As a start, the cruise line deployed Quantum of the Seas to Singapore for a six-month season, the longest deployment of a Quantum-class vessel to the region at the time.

Singapore has since solidified its position as a leading cruise hub in Asia. Last year, in 2023, the city-state welcomed nearly 817,000 cruise figures – nearly double its figures from 2022.

The surge accounted for a third of Asia’s total cruise passengers and represented a 13.9 percent penetration rate in the local population.

Royal Caribbean’s operations in Singapore take place at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS), which can receive vessels up to 220,000 gross tons.

It began offering year-round operations from the port in 2022, and recently revealed Ovation of the Seas will begin providing winter service from the port in October 2025.

Canadian Cruise Port Wraps Up Season With 43 Ship Calls

Prince Rupert Cruise Port, a small but growing port featured on many Alaska cruises, wrapped up its 2024 season after welcoming 43 cruise ship calls and is looking ahead to a busy 2025. 

The port, located about midway between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Juneau, Alaska, received just under 60,000 cruise guests during the April-to-October season. The total reflects a healthy jump from the 41,000 guests who visited the port in 2022.

Prince Rupert is frequently included as a port call on Alaska cruises sailing from Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, along the Inside Passage and to points north. 

Officials at the port, which is managed by Global Port Holdings, attribute the facility’s popularity to the immersive shore excursions available to cruise guests, particularly those that feature the Great Bear Rainforest, a top attraction.

Among those offerings are the Kitsumkalum Glacial Heritage and Gastronomy Trail, and the Great Bear Rainforest by Rail & Road tour, which regularly sold out during the 2024 season. Another popular shore tour brings guests to the Tsimshian Longhouse for a drumming ceremony, where dancers in traditional native dress perform.

Cruise guests also embraced the Explore Prince Rupert by Vintage Trolley excursion, which provides an overview of the region for first-time visitors. In all, the port introduced 12 new excursions and two new immersive experiences, for a total of 14 shore tour options.

“These experiences of Prince Rupert beautifully combine scenic beauty, cultural depth, and the natural wonders, creating memories that our guests will forever treasure,” said Kevin D’Costa, general manager of Prince Rupert Cruise Port.

He said the port will continue to expand its shore excursion roster and support the local vendors and tour operators who organize and run them.

“We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the cruise lines that visited us in 2024. We look forward to welcoming them back in 2025, including the much-anticipated arrival of Royal Caribbean next year, and Virgin Voyages in 2026, as we continue to build strong and exciting partnerships,” added D’Costa.

Royal Caribbean in 2025 will offer cruises with port call visits to Prince Rupert aboard the 2,476-guest Serenade of the Seas. The ship will sail 7-night Alaska Inside Passage cruises roundtrip from Vancouver. Besides Prince Rupert, other featured ports will be Sitka, Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm, Juneau, and Ketchikan.

Brilliant Lady to Visit Prince Rupert in 2026

In 2026, Virgin Voyages will make its debut in the Alaska market with the deployment of its newest ship Brilliant Lady. The line’s fourth ship is under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy, and is due to enter service in September 2025.

Brilliant Lady will be introduced to Alaska with her 7-night “MerMaiden” voyage, roundtrip from Seattle, on May 21, 2026. Port calls are scheduled at Ketchikan and Sitka, Alaska, and Prince Rupert. The voyage will also feature scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Following her inaugural sailing in the Great Land, the 2,762-guest ship will offer departures from Seattle and Vancouver through September 2026, offering 7- and 12-night Alaska Inside Passage and Canadian Coasts cruises that include Prince Rupert.

A sample 12-night voyage roundtrip from Seattle will visit Ketchikan, Sitka, Hubbard Glacier, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Haines, Prince Rupert, and Victoria, British Columbia.

The Port of Prince Rupert in 2022 signed a management agreement with Global Port Holdings (GPH), becoming the company’s first and only North American port.

When the pact was announced, GPH officials suggested that Prince Rupert has the potential to eventually welcome up to 250,000 cruise passengers a year.

Captain Kate McCue Gives Inside Look at Crew Lifeboat Drills

In the unlikely event of an emergency at sea, time is of the essence. This is why the crew members on all cruise ships frequently practice safety drills – usually at least once a week – so they are prepared to respond appropriately in a crisis.

The 1,415 crew members currently working on Celebrity Beyond under the leadership of Captain Kate McCue are no exception – and the famous captain shared a behind-the-scenes look at a recent lifeboat drill. 

McCue, who is well known as the first female captain of a mega cruise ship, confirmed that emergency drills are conducted weekly and the crew assigned to operate the lifeboats take them out monthly to practice maneuvering the tenders in the water and make sure everything is in working order.

However, once every three months, the Celebrity Beyond team is required to fill a lifeboat to the maximum certified capacity – which is 223 in this case – with passengers wearing life vests. 

Luckily for interested followers online, Captain McCue shared what this process looks like on her social media accounts – where the reel has been viewed more than 320,000 times.

In a real emergency, crew members would need to load each lifeboat quickly – as Safety of Life at Sea (or SOLAS) requires that all lifeboats be ready to go with all persons and equipment onboard within a half hour of an order to abandon ship being given. 

“This quarterly exercise is beneficial for the crew to not only witness but also experience the loading process,” McCue explained in the video.

By physically going through the motions, crew members learn exactly what to expect – and the practice and repetition can make the safety procedures feel like second nature in a panicked situation. 

As expected, the drill went well – with the crew members involved beating their previous record for loading in 223 people. 

The old record was seven minutes, but this time the crew did it in six minutes and 35 seconds – with McCue counting that total number of people as 223.25 with her Sphynx cat, Bug Naked, also on the boat. 

How Are Lifeboats Tested?

While it’s highly unlikely for a cruise ship evacuation to occur in this modern day and age, all vessels must be equipped with enough lifeboats in case the unimaginable were to occur. 

While the exact number of lifeboats will vary from ship to ship, there must be a seat on a lifeboat – or an inflatable raft in some cases – for every passenger onboard. 

Current laws require cruise ships to be able to fill lifeboats with 37.5% of all guests from both sides of the ship simultaneously – accounting for 75% of the total capacity. The remaining guests can be evacuated using life rafts.

Cruise ships are also not allowed to sail if they do not have enough lifeboats or if the lifeboats are not in working order – and are frequently inspected using strict guidelines set by the International Maritime Organization. 

Recently, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship actually had to cancel bookings due to a damaged lifeboat

Indeed, Rhapsody of the Seas had to cancel her September 15, 2024, embarkation – which would have been a 7-night Southern Caribbean cruise. Because of the damaged lifeboat, the ship wouldn’t have had the capacity to evacuate everyone in an emergency situation. 

Royal Caribbean – which also owns Celebrity Cruises (where Captain Kate McCue is employed) – compensated guests with a full refund and a future cruise credit.

There was also another incident onboard Quantum of the Seas in December of 2022 – during which crew members accidentally dropped a lifeboat during what was likely either a crew training drill or tendering operations. 

Luckily, the lifeboat wasn’t damaged and no one was hurt in the incident – but this does serve as a prime example for why practice is so important.

Popular Carnival Fleet Cruise Director Announces Retirement

Over the course of 13 years, Mike Pack became one of the most beloved Carnival cruise directors – and continued to gain popularity once he was promoted to fleet cruise director in 2022. 

But of course, all good things must come to an end – and Pack has decided that it’s time to retire from his role at Carnival. 

The news was formally announced during a celebration commemorating the fourth quarter for Carnival Cruise Line Entertainment on November 20, 2024 – during which Pack received a standing ovation for his contributions to the cruise brand.

The official announcement was followed up with a personal post from Pack on his public Facebook page. 

“From the team members and friends I’ve worked alongside, to the guests who’ve made my time with Carnival so rewarding, it’s the memories and experiences we’ve created together that mean the most to me,” Pack wrote, in part.

“Whether it was sharing a laugh at an event, being on stage with a microphone, or simply connecting with so many wonderful people, it’s been an honour to share these experiences with you and of course meeting my incredible wife, Emma,” Pack continued.

Over his more than a decade at sea, Pack rose from a Fun Squad entertainment staff member to an assistant cruise director, and eventually, became a fully fledged cruise director. 

He is perhaps best known for bringing the fun on Carnival Horizon as the inaugural cruise director when the Vista-class ship entered service in April of 2018.

Pack would have also been the inaugural cruise director for Mardi Gras – but chose to extend his time at home in England, as he and his wife had recently welcomed a baby girl. Even so, Pack played a big role in overseeing the launch of the flagship in July of 2021.

He also still joined the Excel-class ship before summer was over – where he served as cruise director until he was promoted to fleet cruise director in January of 2022. 

As fleet director, Pack was responsible for overseeing cruise directors across Carnival’s ships and training new cruise directors.

What’s Next for Mike Pack?

According to the newly-retired cruise director, his top priority is returning home to England to spend time with his wife, Emma, and their daughter, Immy. 

Even in a role that essentially makes him an onboard celebrity, working on cruise ships can be hard. Pack would still be spending several months at a time working long hours away from his loved ones. 

Likewise, Pack’s family is ready to have him home for good – and not just for the break between cruise ship contracts. Emma Nixon, who met Pack while she was also a Carnival cruise director, posted a sweet message to her husband on her Facebook page.

“Your hard work and passion is nothing short of inspiring but we are so, so excited to have you home! Working on ships is such a huge sacrifice but it’s also created the most remarkable memories for us and our families, we will be forever grateful to Carnival,” Nixon wrote.

So, what does Pack’s exit mean for Carnival Cruise Line? While his absence will certainly be felt, other cruise directors are stepping up to the plate to fill the big shoes he is leaving behind. 

Lee Mason, for example, was promoted from cruise director to fleet cruise director in September of 2024 – and has been personally trained by Pack. 

“I’ve had the privilege of training with Mike these past two weeks, and I can’t thank him enough. Mike, you’ve done so much for Carnival and for all of us who’ve had the honor of working alongside you,” Mason wrote in a tribute to Pack on Facebook.

The fleet will also be in good hands with Carnival’s enthusiastic cruise directors – with popular personalities like Kyndall “Fire” Magyar leading the fun.

Carnival Cruise Line Reassures Guest Over Revealing Open Deck Activity

For guests hoping to return from their cruise with a new tan, catching the rays from the pool deck is typically the way to do it.

But while some guests aren’t afraid to mingle with their fellow cruisers while scantily clad in tiny bikinis and speedos, the key is that they are at least wearing something.

As with many of the mainstream cruise lines, Carnival prohibited topless – or nude sunbathing – a long time ago. However, false rumors that topless sunbathing could be making a comeback on Carnival ships threw some future passengers into a panic.

“——-Cruise News page said in their broadcast today that there is topless sunbathing allowed now. This is disturbing. John can you tell me if there is a topless deck on the Horizon? I don’t believe this and really don’t want my teenager sons venturing to sneak a peak,” a concerned mother wrote to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald on his Facebook page.

Per her post, the concerned cruiser and her family will be onboard Carnival Horizon’s 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage that embarks on November 23, 2024, from Miami, Florida – where it would certainly still be warm enough for some more risque sunbathing.

That said, Heald was quick to ease her mind and reassure the future guest that topless sunbathing has not been permitted on Carnival ships for over 20 years – and likely never will be allowed again in the future.

“Topless sunbathing is of course something we used to have on our ships 20 plus years ago,” Heald replied.

“Back then all our ships had topless sunbathing decks and for the most part the guests seemed to enjoy it and certainly didn’t feel a sense of shock and horror because we had a place where our female guests could get an all over tan,” continued Heald.

Guests are of course still welcomed to relax and get that special vacation glow on the pool decks – but may perhaps want to put some extra thought into their swimwear to remain covered enough but also avoid weird tan lines.

Where Can Guests Sunbathe Topless?

In response to Heald’s post, many of Carnival’s more loyal, long-time followers actually remembered when they could sunbathe topless on past voyages – with some reminiscing fondly and others happy that those days are behind them.

“I recall the crazy days of the topless deck! Fortunately for me the only thing topless in the sun is my convertible!”, one cruiser joked.

“I loved the topless deck back in the day. Got the best tan to wear my strapless evening gown,” another person added.

Others also clarified that one couldn’t simply stumble upon nude sunbathers. Indeed, the designated area was sectioned off with clear signage and a barrier.

“Boobie deck! …Such a relaxed vibe and if a curious kid came up for a peek… well that was on the parents as the sign was pretty clear. You couldn’t accidentally turn a corner and get there. I miss the old days…,” another commenter reminisced.

“I cruised on the days of ‘the sun deck’. It had a gate so you couldn’t accidentally end up there,” someone else added.

But cruisers who really want the topless tanning experience may not be entirely out of luck. Depending on where their voyage is sailing, the ports of call they visit may have designated nude beaches where this activity is allowed.

Topless sunbathing is allowed throughout the Caribbean, for example, on designated beaches on the islands of St. Martin, Antigua, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.

Additionally, guests who opt for a cruise cabin with a private balcony may also be able to sunbathe there.

However, keep in mind that not all balconies are entirely private – and your next door neighbors or onlookers from land (while in port) might still be able to catch a glimpse.
