How to Text on a Cruise Ship for Free

Out at sea, there are no cell towers. That’s why cruise ships utilize at-sea providers like Wireless Maritime Services or Cellular at Sea. Guests can use their mobile devices and ship-to-shore services.

However, sending and receiving texts and using your phone can be very expensive using these services. So, to avoid costly fees, learn how to text on a cruise ship for free.

How Can I Send an SMS Text Message?

Text messages travel over your mobile network. Therefore, you can send and receive only text messages (no pictures) in your phone’s app wherever there is service.

After your cruise ship leaves port and travels 12 miles out to sea, the vessel switches to at-sea providers. You will lose your cell tower signal if you don’t place your phone in airplane mode before reaching this distance.

Guests need to be aware of what happens next. Your phone will automatically connect to the at-sea provider if you don’t put your phone in airplane mode.

So, if you send a text or make a call, you can be charged for it. These providers are very expensive, and you will receive an additional data charge plus a per-text charge. This applies to any incoming texts, too.

Avoiding Expensive Costs

It isn’t uncommon for passengers to return home to a sizable cellular bill, despite never making calls or sending texts. While many have unlimited data plans, apps can continually work in the background without you being aware of it. They check and update emails and texts and update themselves without you doing anything.

Phone Expense

While traveling, if you are unaware this is happening, you will experience an extra charge on your bill because your phone has automatically connected to the at-sea provider and did its thing, running up data usage. Hence, you will get billed for it.

Simply put your phone in airplane mode when you leave the port to avoid this charge.

What if I Want to Send Texts, Receive Emails, or Make Calls at Sea?

If you want to do this through a network, then you may want to do one of the following things:

  • Turn off your text alerts
  • Disable your automatic email updates
  • Place roaming data to the off position
  • Disable any apps that run in the background

Additionally, depending on your carrier, you can prearrange cruise ship packages containing text, talk, and data. Larger companies have packages or special rates that allow you to text while on a cruise ship. These carriers include:

Can You Tell if You Are Connected to At-Sea Providers?

While at sea, if you are not in airplane mode, you may be curious as to whether you will be aware if you are connected to any maritime providers. Sometimes, phones can pick up signals from cell phone towers despite being far from land.

However, your phone automatically connects to any at-sea provider. If it does, you will see one of these names on your phone:

  • Telenor Maritime
  • Wireless Maritime Services
  • 901-18
  • NOR-18
  • Cellular at Sea

If you didn’t mean to connect your phone, put it into airplane mode to prevent charges.

How You Can Text on Cruise Ship for Free(ish)

While you may feel like paying is the inevitable conclusion, there are ways to be able to use your device for free. Most carriers will recommend signing up for a monthly plan “just in case”; there are ways that you can avoid this. While it may not always be convenient, it is possible.

Text Messaging Apps

If you use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or WeChat, you may be able to use them whenever you have a Wi-Fi connection. Other suggestions are dependent on the cruise line you are traveling. Guests can use the following apps for texting:

  • Shipmate (available in Apple and Google Play Stores)
  • Cruise Norwegian by Norwegian Cruise Lines: (one-time fee)
  • Celebrity Cruises App by Celebrity Cruises: This app allows guests to complete a faster check-in, obtain their safety briefing, engage in in-app chats, use a digital key, use an in-app calendar, reserve excursions, track expenses, automate their stateroom, and reserve dining.
  • Carnival HUB by Carnival Cruise Lines: (for a one-time activation fee). It contains a chat feature, but the receiving passenger must use the Carnival HUB app to receive messages. It includes a group setting to allow family members/friends to communicate using the same conversation.
  • MSC For Me by MSC Cruises: This web-based app provides free service to devices connected to the MSC intranet. There is no internet package purchase necessary to use this feature. The drawback is you can only use it on MSC Virtuosa, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Meraviglia, Seaside, and Seaview. It will be coming soon to the MSC Seascape, World Europa, and Eurabia. Functionality varies across ships and countries.
  • Navigator by Disney Cruise Line: This app will allow guests to send free texts to people aboard the ship or to do a group chat. While it connects to onboard Wi-Fi, there isn’t a charge for app users to access it.
  • Royal Caribbean App by Royal Caribbean International: You can only use this app on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem, Quantum, Ovation of the Seas, and Harmony. This app will allow passengers to text or call others on the same ship. While free to download, the communications package enabling calling/texting contains a fee per device.
  • MedallionNet by Princess Cruises: Guests on Princess Medallion Class receive Wi-Fi while on board. It will allow you to video chat, text, download email, share pics, stream music, shows, movies, and sports, and keep in touch with family and friends. Packages can be purchased for a single or four devices at a low rate daily. This is available on Caribbean Princess, Coral Princess, Ruby Princess, Crown Princess, Island Princess, Emerald Princess, Sky Princess, Diamond Princess, Grand Princess, Star Princess, Majestic Princess, Enchanted Princess, and Sapphire Princess.
  • Navigator by Holland America: This web-based service allows passengers to book a spa treatment, shore excursion, or specialty dining or check the daily schedule, monitor onboard accounts, buy photos, and text other guests. It operates on all fleets and is free if your device is Wi-Fi enabled.

Some cruise lines allow you to connect to the internet for free without the need to buy a package. These include all-inclusive luxury lines like Viking Ocean and Regent Seven Seas. Internet access is part of your cruise fare, so you can keep in touch through a messaging app.

The downfall of these apps is that you can only connect to other passengers while on the ship. Once you reach the port, you will be unable to use it. However, if you want to reduce costs, you can incorporate the methods mentioned below.

Using Onboard Credit as Part of a Wi-Fi Package

Smart cruises know that receiving any onboard credit will save them money while cruising. Some will use it for gratuities, others for Wi-Fi packages. You can obtain credit by booking through promotions, cruise line shareholders, or travel agencies, just to name a few.

Join a Loyalty Program

Cruise lines tend to incorporate loyalty programs in hopes of attracting returning guests. The best way to reward these cruisers is with free benefits. Once you reach a particular tier, guests can obtain free internet on their cruise. They will sometimes offer free onboard credit for loyal customers, which you can use for internet access.

Book When There Is a Free Wi-Fi Promotion

There are cruise lines that frequently run sales with perks. Free Wi-Fi is a popular choice to draw guests. Norwegian Cruise Line frequently has Free at Sea promotions where guests can receive unlimited open bar, free airfare, excursions, specialty dining, internet, and a free third or fourth guest.

How Can You Text at Port for Free?

Once you reach the port, you may be tempted to check in with email, text, etc. Don’t take your phone out of airplane mode unless you are within your data coverage. If you aren’t, you will pay international rates.

Check your coverage with your phone provider before boarding, especially if you are going outside your home country. Providers tend to offer short-term international, talk, text, and data plans you can purchase before embarkation.

You can keep in touch outside your coverage area using messaging apps, provided you can connect to hotspots. You still can’t use SMS texts if you do not have any cellular data.

At some ports, connecting to a signal is easy. Others can be more challenging. Before disembarking, ask a crew member whether you will be able to connect to a network. Pre-pandemic, crew members had to pay for Wi-Fi while onboard. They are familiar with the best areas to pick up free good signals.

The best places to receive free Wi-Fi are often:

  • Cruise terminals
  • Restaurants/cafes, although many require you to make a purchase
  • Coffee shops/fast food places
  • Large malls/shopping centers
  • Beaches
  • Public libraries

Check if You Have International Coverage

You can use most smartphones anywhere. However, to use them outside the country, you may need to see if your carrier will cover you. Most contain the information on their website and will allow you to determine whether you can use your phone while cruising or whether you need to increase your coverage temporarily.

Be sure you can send texts, make calls, and use the internet. You will need to be aware of any exceptions.

Prepare Your Loved Ones if Texting Is Limited

If those around you are used to receiving an instant reply, you may want to prepare them for when you are taking your cruise. If they have never been on a cruise, they may be unaware that you may not be receiving their texts if you aren’t connected.

Cruise Passenger on Phone

Most cruisers tell their family that regular text will not work at sea and will use airplane mode. They can use a messaging app if they need to contact you. Cruise lines usually have a designated phone number to be used in emergencies. They will require the name of the cruise ship and the guest’s full name to send a message.

For business, you may want to let people know that you won’t be able to receive or respond to their messages. Furthermore, sometimes messages never come through – even after you get home. Therefore, when it comes to business, email works best.

Conclusion

If you are wondering how to text on a cruise ship for free, you may realize that it is not easy and can be expensive. Sometimes, it is a matter of finding hotspots you can use while using messenger apps.

If you want to communicate with those on board, using the cruise line’s app is easy. However, you may have to get creative with keeping in touch with those not on the cruise.

Service Change Spotted on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean International appears to be testing out a change in housekeeping services aboard Quantum of the Seas. While found on other cruise lines, how will Royal Caribbean cruisers react to what could be seen as drastically reduced service? Why the cruise line is doing this will surprise many guests.

Housekeeping Service Cut in Half

The luxury of being pampered with daily stateroom service is a benefit many travelers enjoy on cruises, from fresh towels and a clean bathroom to vacuumed floors, wiped down counters, or in the evening, turndown service for a relaxing welcome after the night’s festivities.

Guests recently sailing on Quantum of the Seas have noticed a “Housekeeping Services Update” listed in the daily cruise newsletter on embarkation day, however, that dramatically reduces that service. The notice reads:

“In an effort to be more sustainable and to align with global hospitality trends, we will be adjusting our stateroom services to 1 time per day.”

Traditionally, cruise travelers have enjoyed both morning and evening stateroom service to refresh their cabins, a benefit seldom seen in land-based hotels.

Onboard Quantum of the Seas, which features 2,094 staterooms that can welcome as many as 4,180 guests at double occupancy or up to 4,905 guests when fully booked, that service will now largely be just one time per day.

The notice goes on to clarify that Junior Suite staterooms and higher categories will still receive 2 housekeeping services per day. Still, those cabins that will get full twice-daily service make up only a small fraction of all the staterooms onboard. Guests are urged to “work with your housekeeping staff to ensure your individual needs are met.”

What this means is not clearly defined, but likely guests will be able to select whether they prefer morning or evening service, as well as asking their stateroom steward for any special requests, such as extra hangers, different pillows, or a mattress topper for softer sleeping.

There is no indication that this change in housekeeping service will be rolled out to the entire Royal Caribbean fleet, as for now, it is only being reported aboard Quantum of the Seas.

The first-in-class vessel is currently sailing from Brisbane, offering a variety of South Pacific and Australian cruises through mid-April 2023, at which time she will reposition to Seattle to offer 7-night sailings through the Alaska season.

At this time, it is unknown whether or not this change in housekeeping frequency will only apply to Australian cruises, or if the new policy will become permanent no matter where the ship is sailing.

Why Is Service Being Cut?

The notice claims that the reduction in daily housekeeping service is twofold, first to “be more sustainable” and second “to align with global hospitality trends.”

There is no doubt that reducing the frequency of cleaning will help conserve resources and reduce the use of cleaning chemicals, which is indeed more sustainable.

If guests do not have their towels exchanged twice per day, for example, they may be encouraged to reuse a towel or two. If each cabin onboard used just 1 less towel each day, that would mean 14,658 fewer towels to be washed for just a single 7-night cruise.

Read More: How to Help Out Your Stateroom Steward

Also helping sustainability is the fact that fewer chemicals would be needed to clean staterooms if stewards are not wiping down counters, cleaning toilets, or scrubbing showers twice per day. The idea that this reduction in service is “to align with global hospitality trends,” however, is more suspect.

Many current global trends for less service are practices put into place during the height of the pandemic, when it was recommended – even required – to reduce the number of people entering hotel rooms or cruise ship staterooms, which was believed to lower the risk of disease transmission.

Furthermore, staffing shortages as cruising restarted necessitated reduced service in order to keep sailing, as there simply weren’t enough crew members to maintain previous levels of service.

What is worrying now, however, is that these new, lowered “global hospitality trends” have become the norm, and what was once a luxurious part of cruising travel may be forever lost.

The fact that the twice-daily housekeeping service is still being maintained for all suites indicates this is a perk that must now be paid for, enticing guests to pay for a more expensive category stateroom rather than maintaining high levels of service for all guests.

No Reduction in Gratuities

While housekeeping services are being trimmed, it must be noted that the gratuities charged to guests to reward crew members for delivering excellent service are not being reduced accordingly, despite less service now being available.

Royal Caribbean International increased automatic gratuity rates across the fleet in September, with a $1.50 per person, per day increase for all the stateroom categories that will now be receiving less housekeeping service aboard Quantum of the Seas.

Suite staterooms, however, only increased gratuities by $1 per person, per day. Suites do already pay a higher per-diem gratuity rate than other stateroom categories, and enjoy many additional benefits as part of that higher fee.

What do you think of this policy change? Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for further updates if this policy is rolled out to the entire Royal Caribbean fleet.

Norwegian Cruise Line to Increase Gratuities for All Passengers

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that it will be increasing daily gratuities for guests booked in suites and regular staterooms. This change will take effect on all sailings starting January 1, 2023.

The change comes just days after Norwegian Cruise Line introduced a fee for the continental breakfast option from room service and is part of a broader initiative across the cruise industry increased prices, limited options, and fee increases.

Norwegian Cruise Line Increasing Gratuities

Gratuities, or tips, are standard practice in the cruise industry and are given to the crew members onboard. Norwegian Cruise Line has decided to raise gratuities to better align with industry standards and to provide their crew members with a more competitive compensation package.

NCL sent out a letter to guests and travel agents on December 6, saying: “At Norwegian Cruise Line, we are committed to delivering exceptional guest experience at every step of the cruise journey, and with the dedication of our shipboard team, we are able to turn your vacation dreams into reality. As such, we make it easy for guests to show their appreciation for these vacation heroes with discretionary daily services charges, which provide gratuities to key onboard team members, including room stewards, restaurant servers and behind-the-scenes support staff.”

The Haven and Suite guests, who book the highest level of accommodations on the ship, will now be charged $25 per day per person. This is a $5 increase from the previous gratuity charge of $20 per day.

Club Balcony suite guests and all other guests will now be charged $20 per day per person. A $2 increase from the previous gratuity charge of $18 per day for Club Balcony suite guests and a $4 increase for guests staying in all other cabin categories.

Norwegian Cruise Line emphasizes that gratuities are optional and can be adjusted or removed at any time by the guest. However, the company strongly encourages guests to leave gratuities for their hardworking crew members who provide exceptional service throughout the cruise.

The new pricing is only for bookings made on or after January 1, 2023. For any bookings made before that date but sailing after January 1, guests can pay the old pricing as long as they have pre-paid their gratuities.

The price increase is already the second time in eight months that Norwegian Cruise Line has increased gratuities. However, at that time, the increase was significantly less, at $0.50 to $1.50, depending on the cabin category.

Is Paying the Gratuity Mandatory?

Many guests often wonder whether paying the service charge gratuities is mandatory. The service charge adds a significant amount of money to the final bill, something many don’t necessarily factor into the cruise fare.

Including a service charge allows cruise lines to compensate their staff without requiring passengers to tip individually. This can benefit passengers and staff. It eliminates the need for passengers to constantly worry about how much to tip and ensures that staff members receive fair and consistent compensation for their work.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of the service charge model. Some passengers may feel it is unfair to be charged for services they did not personally request or use. However, paying gratuities is never mandatory, and should you feel that the service level needs to improve, you can opt-out. However, you should always carefully consider if this is how to show discontent.

More Cruise Line Price Hikes

The price hike for gratuities by Norwegian Cruise Line is just one in a series of price increases that we’ve seen across the industry in the last couple of months.

In September, Norwegian Cruise Line announced a price hike for its beverage packages. Effective January 1, 2023, prices for both the Premium Plus Beverage Package and the Unlimited Open Bar Beverage Package will be raised by $10.

On December 5, we reported that Norwegian Cruise Line appears to be eliminating the complimentary continental breakfast option from their room service menu, adding a $4.95 (USD) service fee for that menu offering.

In September, Carnival Cruise Line updated its room service menu and removed some complimentary items. At the time, the cruise line said it did so to address food waste issues. A few days ago, Princess Cruises also increased gratuities by $1.50 per guest per day for all cabin and suite categories.

More From Cruise Hive

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have adapted their main dining room policies, adding surcharges on dishes, mostly depending on how many entrees guests order per meal. While inflation is hitting everyone hard, it is remarkable that cruise lines are making these changes at nearly the same time, making a cruise a costly vacation option for many.

Royal Caribbean’s Largest Cruise Ship is Oversold Due to Inventory Error

Royal Caribbean International has contacted select guests booked aboard an upcoming sailing on Wonder of the Seas with the unfortunate news that the cruise is oversold and their original stateroom bookings are not available. Guests have been offered an alternative, but not everyone may be happy with the option.

Wonder of the Seas Overbooked

In an email sent to impacted guests, Royal Caribbean International has informed them of the overbooking. “We’re sorry to inform you that due to an unexpected inventory error, your scheduled Wonder of the Seas December 11th, 2022 sailing is currently oversold in certain stateroom categories,” the email read.

The email did not note exactly which stateroom categories are oversold, and it is possible that more than one category is involved.

Wonder of the Seas has the capacity to welcome 5,734 guests based on double occupancy in a total of 2,867 staterooms. When fully booked with all berths filled, as many as 7,084 guests may be onboard.

Furthermore, the nature of the “unexpected inventory error” is not explained, but could be due to a number of factors, such as technical difficulties with the cruise line’s booking engine or website, miscommunication for group bookings, or other causes.

This is similar to another recent Royal Caribbean International oversold situation that occurred for a sailing aboard the Vision-class Rhapsody of the Seas in August.

The affected Wonder of the Seas cruise is a 7-night sailing from Port Canaveral, departing on Sunday, December 11 and visiting CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island destination in The Bahamas, as well as St. Thomas and St. Maarten, before returning to Port Canaveral on Sunday, December 18.

Options for Impacted Guests

Guests whose bookings have been affected can choose a couple of options to compensate for the oversold error. Royal Caribbean is offering guests to move to an interior stateroom for the same sailing, leaving December 11. If guests choose that offer, they can still take the cruise they’ve planned, with all the amenities of the largest and newest cruise ship in Royal Caribbean’s fleet.

Guests who do choose to move to an interior cabin will also receive a 100% refund for their cruise fare – even though they will still be taking the cruise, albeit in an interior cabin rather than their originally booked stateroom.

The only costs not refunded would be applicable taxes, fees, and gratuities. “Which means you practically get to sail for free!” the email explained.

Guests will also still be responsible for any other onboard purchases, such as drink packages, spa reservations, specialty dining, and shore tours.

Wonder of the Seas View

The special offer to sail for a $0 cruise fare (after the refund) is only available for a limited time and is subject to availability. There is no indication of how many interior cabins are still open for this particular sailing, which departs in just five days.

Guests who choose this option must submit their current booking details no later than Thursday, December 8, via a special survey link. Calling the cruise line or working through a new reservation will not be possible to make this change.

Oversold reservations that are successfully submitted for this special offer will receive a phone or email confirmation and updated reservation information.

If many people respond to accept the offer, not every interested guest may be given the special deal. Instead, they would remain booked in their original stateroom with their original cruise fare as if no oversold situation had existed.

Cancelations Still Possible

Guests who prefer to remain in their original stateroom are not required to move to an interior cabin, and no guests will be forced to move without purposefully accepting the special offer.

If enough guests accept the offer to change their staterooms, no other action will be necessary for additional guests and everyone will set sail. If, however, there are not enough booked guests willing to move to interior staterooms, some guests may not be able to enjoy their cruise vacation.

After the December 8 closing date for the special offer, “oversold bookings on Wonder of the Seas may be canceled,” the email explained.

While no further details have been revealed of what may happen if additional staterooms must be canceled, it is highly unlikely that guests would receive much compensation beyond a refund of their canceled cruise.

Certainly, guests who do not accept the special offer for the December 11 sailing would not receive a nearly free cruise fare.

There may be many reasons why individual guests would prefer not to accept the offer, and every guest should make the decision that works best for their cruise vacation plans.

With a bit of luck and enough guests interested in a very unusual deal, Wonder of the Seas will have plenty of room for everyone to set sail next week after all.

Are Carnival Cruises All Inclusive?

While it appears that cruises are all-inclusive vacations, not every cruise is. While some provide all-inclusive packages, like Norwegian Cruise Line, some cruises do not have that option. Are Carnival cruises all inclusive? We take a look to see what you get when taking a vacation with the popular cruise line.

The benefit of a Carnival Cruise is that they provide cheaper cruises compared to other larger lines. However, as the customer, you need to know what is included in your package. You need to know what you are getting for the money you paid and the additional costs you may incur with package add-ons and for access to some venues.

Are Carnival Cruises All-Inclusive?

The unfortunate news is that Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International do not have a real all-inclusive deal on their ships. While booking your trip on these cruise ships, you will note that fare includes meals in their main dining room, your cabin or stateroom, the buffet, and some select free venues.

You will also access shows, pools, onboard venues, and additional amenities on ships like Carnival Pride, Carnival Elation, and Carnival Freedom. Basic fare also includes water, coffee, and some additional basic drinks, but not items like alcoholic drinks or pop.

Drink Packages

While Royal Caribbean International allows you “all-you-can-drink” in terms of alcoholic beverages, Carnival Cruise Line limits guests to 15 drinks per day. Carnival has a fixed daily fee, while Royal Caribbean varies what it offers per sailing.

You can bundle some drink packages, but the overall cost outside of the standard offerings at the Lido Restaurant and Main Dining Room are as follows:

  • Bottomless Bubbles: With this unlimited pop package, guests can enjoy as much juice and soda as they like from any venue that serves drinks while on board. The only place it does not apply is room service, the minibar, and through the interactive television. Also, only one person can use the package and can get only one drink at a time.
  • Cheers: This alcoholic drinks package includes spirits and cocktails under $20, glasses of beer or wine under $20, alcohol-free cocktails, specialty coffee, energy drinks, hot tea, bottled water, non-alcoholic bottled drinks, bottled water, 25% off spirits and wine by glass over $20, 25% off champagne or wine by the bottle, and 25% off classes and beverage seminars.

The exclusions to the Cheers package are:

  • Beverages for sale in a souvenir glass
  • Bottles of liquor
  • Gangway drinks
  • Minibar and room service
  • Floaters, shared cocktails, beer buckets, or pitchers
  • Drinks offered through an enomatic wine machine
  • Merchandise or related items

Dining Experiences

Carnival cruise ships, like the Mardi Gras, Carnival Breeze, and Carnival Vista, contain a wide variety of food, but not all are free. Eating in the Main Dining Room/Lido Restaurant is at no charge. Additionally, some specialty restaurants may have a complimentary breakfast and lunch option.

Other food comes with an added expense, including snacks found in lounges or cafes and an evening meal in a specialty restaurant. As noted above, the only free foods are the pizzeria, frozen yogurt, and ice cream. However, in early November 2022, the cruise line announced that it’s cutting back on 25/7 free ice cream and yogurt, which is now only available from 11 AM to midnight each day.

Be aware that some special meals come with a charge in the Main Dining Room. The Steakhouse Selections will cost more, as will the prime cuts of meat.

Most passengers are content with the food in the Lido Restaurant and Main Dining Room. The offerings are varied and plentiful, so guests will never tire of the food. This enables guests not to have to pay an additional fee for dining if they choose not to.

Carnival provides several deals wherein guests can bundle added-fee items and vary according to the trip booked. In some instances, guests can bundle internet and drinks, spending less money when compared to making separate purchases.

Are Flights Included?

A Carnival cruise may include a flight. However, they are an option available when guests book their cruise, including transfers to or from your airport. If a flight is required, it is advised to book it as part of the fare or arrange it yourself.

You may save money if flights and transfers are booked separately. However, it does come with extra work. If there are delays, the ship will not wait. Sometimes a cruise line may wait for guests who booked flights as part of their packages.

What Is Included May Depend on the Stateroom

Booking cruise ship suites may provide extra perks found in the fare. This may include:

  • Express boarding/priority check-in
  • One free laundry bag per cruise
  • Priority debarkation
  • Two bottles of water free in the suite

Depending on what suite is booked and on what cruise ship, other perks may include:

  • Access to Havana Pool plus cabanas during the day (Havana Suite on Carnival Celebration, Carnival Horizon, Mardi Gras, Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Vista)
  • For Family Harbor Suite (on Carnival Celebration, Carnival Horizon, Mardi Gras, Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Vista), guests enjoy access to Family Harbor Lounge with video/board games, free snacks/breakfast in the lounge, kids eat for free in some specialty restaurants, and one evening of free babysitting.
  • For Carnival Excel Suites on the Mardi Gras, guests enjoy free entrance to Loft 19/priority cabana reservation, sparkling wine/fruit bowl, Bottomless Bubbles, complimentary room service, free on-demand movies, and no charge for laundry.

Conclusion

Are Carnival Cruises all-inclusive? The answer is no, overall. Guests booking a cruise so have the option to purchase extra add ons, which can often be cheaper online before the voyage. Even though there are many venues, services and packages that guests can purchase, the free options can still make a great cruise vacation.

Norwegian Cruise Line Introducing New Fee Guests Will Not Like

Following a trend of small price hikes and more onboard fees, Norwegian Cruise Line appears to be eliminating the free continental breakfast option from their room service menu, adding a $4.95 (USD) service fee for that menu offering. Guests onboard have confirmed the new fee, though it does not yet appear to be fleet-wide.

New Charge for Room Service Breakfast

Guests onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships have begun to confirm a new $4.95 service fee for continental breakfast room service. While many cruise lines have rolled out room service fees in recent years, classic continental breakfast offerings have typically remained free of charge.

The continental breakfast menu onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships includes a selection of fruit, pastries, yogurt, cold cereal, and various beverages, including coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, and juice. Several specialty selections are also available, including omelets and French toast.

Guests can pre-order breakfast via a door hanger menu, including selecting the preferred time in 30-minute intervals for breakfast to be delivered. Now, that paper menu also notes that “A $4.95 room service fee will apply.” Previously, there was no charge for the breakfast menu.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s online frequently asked questions (FAQ) does state that “Morning coffee, continental breakfast and orders placed by guests sailing in The Haven will not attract a charge,” but that “Prices are subject to change.”

The fee cited in the FAQ is up to $9.95, plus a 20% gratuity and beverage service charge for non-complimentary drinks and special occasion items.

This discrepancy seems to indicate that the new service fee for a room service continental breakfast may not yet be applied fleet-wide, or it is possible the charge is only being tested on select ships for the time being to gauge guest reaction and what affect the fee may have on room service overall.

Food-Related Changes in the Cruise Industry

This new fee is not too surprising, considering many recent changes to room service and other menu offerings across most major cruise brands.

In early September, Carnival Cruise Line updated its room service menu and removed some complimentary items, citing the need to address food waste issues. The continental breakfast menu, however, remains complimentary.

Both Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have adapted their main dining room policies with some surcharges based on the number of entrees ordered.

In recent years, many cruise lines have instituted some type of fee for room service, either a “service fee” that is typically a flat fee for each order, or else a-la-carte pricing for different menu items.

When there are charges for room service, an additional gratuity charge may also be automatically added to each order.

Enjoying Breakfast Onboard

Many cruise travelers enjoy taking advantage of breakfast room service to have a slower, more relaxed start to the day, perhaps enjoying a cup of coffee on their balcony or just gently waking up after a late night of production shows, karaoke, game shows, and other onboard fun.

Scheduling a room service breakfast is also a great way to avoid crowds in the main dining room or at the breakfast buffet, and many parents with young children find it easier to get the day started with breakfast in their cabins.

Yet this new charge is one more fee guests may need to budget for. While it does not appear that each individual menu item will have a separate charge for Norwegian Cruise Line, even one-per-order fees do add up.

Guests can still enjoy a completely free breakfast in each ship’s complimentary dining areas, however, including the all-you-can-eat buffet as well as main dining restaurants.

Mazatlan Cruise Port: Everything You Need to Know

As a cruise ship passenger, you will see that the Mazatlan cruise port is the northernmost city to visit on the Mexican Riviera. Travelers and adventurers have been landing here since pre-Columbian times.

The modern terminal is staffed with helpful volunteers and, as we shall see, navigating this port of call and the surrounding city is easy. You will be surrounded by an authentic quality. It is a real city that happily welcomes visitors, rather than a place simply built around tourism.

The area surrounding the Mazatlan cruise port is charming and the activities range from the sublime to the adventurous. Miles of beaches, deep culture and scrumptious seafood are the signature qualities of this destination.

Known as a sportfishing mecca around the world, the popular cruise destination is also home to the country’s largest fleet of shrimping boats. So, at the shrimp capital of the world, be sure to taste the huge variety of flavors developed over the centuries.

The culture here dates back hundreds of years. Experience it via the celebrations, food, museums, churches and art located throughout the growing city. Throughout Mazatlan, you will see monuments, dancing fountains and attractions like an animal kingdom, historic observatory and the new Sea of Cortez Aquarium – all celebrating the heritage and history of this important port.

Mazatlan, a colonial beach town known as The Pearl of The Pacific, is truly a cruise destination with “something for everyone.” Here are some tips to guide you during your stop at Mazatlan cruise port.

Preparing for Mazatlan Cruise Port

To enjoy your time in Mazatlan cruise port and beyond, consider these three categories of preparation: clothing, currency and the clock. Our first item is dependent on the weather. During the summer months, expect the occasional rain shower with a possibility of brief yet severe weather in the afternoons.

In the late fall, the temperatures are pleasant and most of the wet weather has passed. During the busy winter months, nighttime temperatures can dip into the 50°s (F) with a high near 80° (F) during the daylight hours.

It is a good idea to wear sunscreen and take a hat and sunglasses onshore any time of the year. Traveling around town and exploring the many outdoor locations will include hours in the tropical climate.

Keep in mind that the risk of heatstroke and sunburn are quite high on both sunny and overcast days. Also, remember to stay hydrated. Bring your own water from the ship or buy bottled water since it is not recommended that visitors drink the tap water.

The second item, currency, takes a bit of planning. While the US dollar is welcomed, the official local money is pesos. The latter is accepted at all businesses as well as by the street vendors located throughout the city. When shopping, the prices will be marked with the familiar US dollar sign or (more likely) in pesos. If you are unsure, simply ask.

Stop at the port terminal ATM or authorized money exchange establishments to get some cash. It is not always an option to pay with credit or debit cards. And, you will want some “folding money” for tips.

A final consideration in planning your visit at the Mazatlán port of call is time. There are lots of places to visit, adventures to have and local flavors to taste.

The city is spread out and it might require a bit of travel time to reach the places you want to see. So, transportation might take longer than expected – particularly during the busy seasons. Make sure to leave enough time for the ride back to the port. The cruise ship will leave as scheduled!

Arrival at Port

The first thing you are likely to notice as your ship leaves the Pacific Ocean and enters the Canal de Navigación is El Faro – Spanish for “the lighthouse.” Look left! To the northwest on the way into the Mazatlán cruise port stands a piece of history in seafaring navigation – the highest lighthouse in the Americas. This icon sits 523 feet above high tide on the spot where light has guided ships since 1828.

What first began as a beacon of fire created with wood, coconut chips and whale oil lit in the evenings atop the hill later became a proper lighthouse in 1879. Still operational today, El Faro casts its important light for 30 nautical miles into the ocean.

The second obvious quality at this destination is the unique nature of the Mazatlán cruise port. Unlike some other destinations along the Mexican Riviera, this is one of the busiest shipping ports on this side of the ocean. Your vessel will share the waterway with all types of commercial fleets like cargo and container ships.

What this means for you as you step onto the land amidst the hustle and bustle of commerce is a free tram ride to the terminal. These complimentary rides run continuously, so getting to and from the cruise ship is easy to manage.

Once at the terminal, you will find a modern new building. Along with restroom facilities, there are souvenirs and a local craft market here.

You may also find local Tourist Aide Volunteers (easily identifiable by their blue shirts) who are happy to answer your questions, make suggestions for sightseeing and supply you with a map of the area. The port gate is located beside the main thoroughfare and there are vehicles just outside waiting to carry you to the sights.

Getting Around

Once you have left the port, there are multiple options for exploring the scenery, history, eateries and adventures in this popular destination. For a bit of exercise, consider a stroll to the “Old Town” about one mile away.

This retro area has the look and feel of several eras from the 19th Century up to the mid-20th Century. From the terminal, you can follow along a cobblestone path lined in blue color for ease of navigation. There are also “blue shirts” to assist you along the 20- to 30-minute walk.

If you would rather ride, there are several public bus routes in the city. And, the buses are either white or green. The former have no air conditioning and, thus, are cheaper. The green ones are considered “tourist” buses – a bit higher priced, air conditioned and move around the city more quickly. These run on a set schedule from early morning to late evening and are the most economical way to get around (other than walking!).

Also, you can hail a taxi for a ride to anywhere in the area. The licensed taxis have either a red or green stripe on the vehicle. There are no meters; you ask the fare ahead of time. This is a good opportunity to use your language skills and negotiate with the drivers. Insider tip: You can arrange for a ride to and from a particular location at the same time. That is, agree upon a better rate by scheduling a pickup time with the same driver.

For a more cultural experience, take a ride in a Pulmonia. These iconic open-air taxis number in the hundreds. They are part of the history of the entrepreneurship of Mazatlan, dating back to the 1960s. Most accommodate four passengers and are a bit more expensive than buses and taxis.

You will see all manner of customized decorations as you ride the streets rich with aromas of local restaurants and Latin music. There is even a monument on the Malecón honoring this unique form of transportation! Simply flag down an empty one and off you go on a fun ride.

Select one of these options at the Mazatlán cruise port and ride to another location for walking the Malecón. This 13-mile-long elevated wall built along the seashore is one of the longest walkways of its kind on the world. The ocean, the beach, stores, restaurants and vendors are found all along the route.

Communicating

Access to WiFi is increasingly easy throughout the Mexican Riviera. Your best option for hopping online will be in cafes, restaurants and at public spaces. Some places offer this for free to their customers; and, other locations will charge a fee.

To avoid unwelcome surprises on the bill, check with your cell phone provider before sailing to get the specifics of using the phone, texting or browsing both on the ship and in another country.

Who Docks at Mazatlan Cruise Port

If this port of call in the Mexican Riviera is on your list of places to visit, the following cruise lines have regular itineraries. Some offer multiple arrivals and departures throughout the year, and others only travel here during certain seasons. Regardless of when you plan to travel, there will be many choices of ships to make the journey.

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Holland America
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean

Each website for these cruise lines has search options that allow you to include the Mazatlán cruise port in your criteria. Simply select your favorite fleet, sort by ports of call, choose a range of sailing dates and pick the desired type of ship (family, adult, adventure and so forth) for your next cruise.

Where to Go First

Now that we know how to navigate the port and extend our visit into this beautiful city, let’s make our way to the first place we saw upon arrival – El Faro. Grab a ride to the base of Cerro del Creston to begin the climb with your camera at the ready.

The summit is accessed via a somewhat strenuous climb (hiking boots not required) up the 500-foot elevation. At the top, you can walk out “over” the cliff on the glass bottom walkway; have refreshments; and, enjoy the premier view of The Pearl of The Pacific. And, you might even see your cruise ship docked in the harbor. This is the perfect place to launch your adventures in Mazatlán!

If you would like to stay close to port or your time onshore is limited, these are the top recommendations nearby:

  • Centro Historico (Old Town) – architecture in tropical colors, shops, museums, art galleries, eateries
  • Plaza Machado – a family-friendly open tree-lined courtyard amidst gorgeous buildings and cafés
  • Angela Peralta Theatre – tour inside the stunningly restored 1874 landmark or catch a live performance

A Final Note

Much has been said in recent years about the safety of Mazatlán. Advice from travelers and expats alike is that this city is a safe place to visit. Like any trip, stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your valuables.

Avoid showing lots of money (withdraw only small amounts at a time from secure ATMS) or wearing flashy jewelry. Be polite and respectful and, if you see an argument on the street, walk away. These are good practices no matter where you go! In Mazatlán (like in other urban areas), go where the other tourists are going.

For example, the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), the Malecon, Zona Marina (Marina Zone) and Centro Historico (Old Town) all have security about and very little crime. It is not recommended that you travel too far away from the city.

If you have found places you would like to visit beyond the frequented areas, book a shore excursion with your cruise line. This will be a guided tour with your fellow shipmates, thereby decreasing safety issues. Follow these simple precautions and you can also stay after dark for the nightlife.

Lifeboat Mishap on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum of the Seas inadvertently dropped a lifeboat during what appears to have been crew training or tendering operations on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Video footage and photos shared through social media show the moment of the accident, as well as the subsequent aftermath with a damaged lifeboat.

Lifeboat Goes Overboard

A startling video from Quantum of the Seas shows the ship’s number 12 lifeboat, on the port side of the vessel, detaching from its davits and falling overboard, aft-first, into the water and slowly drifting astern of the cruise ship on the afternoon of Thursday, December 1.

The davits for two other lifeboats were extended, hanging those boats out over the side, but number 12’s davits were still in the vertical position, having only been partially repositioned from their at rest and locked position at the time the lifeboat fell.

As it fell, the rescue craft hit the deck of the cruise ship, before falling over the side and into the water. As it settled into the water, the bow of the lifeboat also struck the side of the cruise ship.

The lifeboat was retrieved, and photos clearly show large dents and cracks on the starboard aft corner of the lifeboat, as well as damage to the fiberglass underside of the lifeboat. The rescue craft was able to be firmly secured in place aboard the cruise ship in its normal position.

No injuries were reported due to the incident, and it is highly unlikely anyone was aboard the rescue craft at the time, which would be a gross violation of safety procedures.

One crew member is visible on deck at the time the lifeboat falls, holding a guide rope of some sort, but quickly releases the rope and backs away as the lifeboat is clearly out of control.

Drill or Tendering?

While cruise ship crew members conduct frequent training and safety drills involving muster stations and lifeboats, this incident does not appear to have been during a training procedure.

There are no groups of crew members assembled on the deck, as there would be if lifeboat procedures were being explained or demonstrated at the time.

Furthermore, because the lifeboat quickly drifts astern rather than bobbing at the position it was dropped, it is clear that Quantum of the Seas is still moving forward, though slowly, at the time the lifeboat detached.

Quantum of the Seas is sailing a 10-night roundtrip South Pacific itinerary from Brisbane, Australia, and was visiting Mystery Island in Vanuatu on the day of the incident.

Mystery Island is a tender port, meaning that small boats are required to ferry guests from the cruise ship to small docks or piers as they debark the ship to enjoy time ashore.

It is not unusual for cruise ships to use their own lifeboats for this purpose, as many small port communities do not have adequate ferry boats to meet the demand when a large cruise ship visits. To expedite tendering, the lifeboats to be used will often be readied shortly before the ship arrives at anchor for the port of call.

Once the cruise ship is at rest for tendering, the lifeboats would have been fully lowered into the water for guests to board using a gangway between the cruise ship and the lifeboat, which the lifeboat using thrusters and being tied off to maintain a close, safe position for embarkation and debarkation.

Mystery Island is itself uninhabited, and is two-thirds of a mile (one kilometer) south of Aneityum Island, which has a population of just under 1,000 people.

For comparison, the Quantum-class cruise ship can host 4,180 passengers at double occupancy, and as many as 4,905 guests when fully booked, along with the 1,500 officers and crew members on board.

No Delays Reported

Guests onboard Quantum of the Seas report that the lines were a bit longer for tendering to Mystery Island, but there appears to have been no significant delay to the ship’s itinerary.

Since the port time at Mystery Island was to have been 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., that allowed plenty of time for the lifeboat to be retrieved and secured before the cruise ship continued on its way.

Quantum of the Seas will finish out its itinerary with a day at sea on Friday, and overnight call on Port Vila, Vanuatu, from Saturday to Sunday, two addition days at sea, and will return to Brisbane on Wednesday, December 7.

Pink Flamingo Meaning on Cruises: What You Must Know!

Amusingly (or mortifyingly, depending on where you find yourself on the spectrum), there are not only secret symbols on a cruise line that indicate those who are interested in swinging, but the same principles apply to clothing as well. If you know the meaning behind an upside-down pineapple on a door, you may also want to discover the Pink Flamingo meaning on a cruise.

According to the New York Post, 15 million swingers exist in the United States. They comprise 4.5% of the total population. Swinging isn’t just reserved for group sex or changing partners. It is also wife-swapping as well.

When going on a cruise ship (or even at home), there are certain symbols you will want to avoid if you aren’t into swinging. Some are obvious or becoming more obvious, while others are just beginning to emerge. This doesn’t only extend to a symbol on a door anymore. It also incorporates clothing choices. Items to avoid or use, depending on where you stand, are:

  • Upside-down pineapples (or any pineapple-related clothing as it means the same thing)
  • Unicorns (seen as couples looking for other couples to swing with)
  • Pink flamingos (plastic lawn flamingos and on cruises)
  • Garden gnomes (more on the lawn)
  • White rocks around a mailbox
  • Wearing a black ring on the right hand
  • Wearing a red ball cap
  • Thumb rings
  • Toe rings
  • Wedding ring worn on your right hand
  • Metal star
  • Yin-Yang tattoo

If you aren’t into swinging, you might want to avoid wearing any of these items. For cruisers, as more people are finding out, it doesn’t just extend to symbols displayed on the door, but clothing as well.  Here is the truth of the matter.

The Secret Signals Exposed

Swingers display one of these secret symbols to send a message to others who engage in the same lifestyle. This doesn’t just extend to a cabin room but clothing and grocery shopping.

If a symbol is displayed on your cruise cabin door, it means that you are open to the experience and other swingers are welcome. Worn on your clothing (pineapples, pink flamingos, and a black ring), it says that you are “secretly” looking. It acts as a subtle signal most casual glances wouldn’t pick up on.

A black ring worn on the right hand, despite being a common way to accessorize, is what a person uses as a conversation starter. It initiates a discussion regarding alternative lifestyles. It is a signal that you are looking to meet other people who are interested in swinging. People will note the ring and may subtly attempt to begin a conversation on swinging.

On a shopping cart, a cabin door, or in the front of a home (white rocks, pink plastic flamingo lawn ornament, and garden gnomes) indicates a swinging party is in progress, or you are looking to attend one. Unicorns are more of an emoji feature, presently, to indicate a swinger, found mostly on dating apps.

Why Do Couples Resort to Secret Signals?

Secret signals are a subtle way of saying “hello” to others interested in this type of experience. It is not something that is “open” publicly, so those interested often resort to signals to attract others looking for similar experiences. If you are unsure what being a “swinger” means, here is a brief history.

The History of Swinging

Most people think swinging began in the seventies and died off from there. However, while swinging may have decreased, it is now gaining popularity again. Many people don’t know that it originated in the 1950s when California Air Force officers began swapping their wives. What started as a private, taboo home activity now dominates clubs, websites, and cruises.

Swinging is commonly found in middle-aged couples who have grown bored with their sex life. They thought they could revitalize it by engaging in sexual exploration with other couples. Now, 20- to 30-year-olds are using it to destress after an intense work week. Also, interpretations of monogamy are changing with Millennials and Gen Xers.

What Do Pink Flamingos Mean on a Cruise?

Upside-down pineapples are the most common symbol on a cruise to indicate couples are interested in swinging. However, pink flamingos are another symbol used to indicate the same thing.

Again, it is a series of secret symbols that people should be aware of when planning for their cruise. If you are into swinging, you will know the symbols. However, if you are not, you could find yourself in an awkward situation.

It is not uncommon for people to decorate their cruise ship doors. While you may think that you are simply decorating your space, you may inadvertently be sending out a secret message. Therefore, cruisers should be aware of these symbols so they don’t unintentionally send a mixed message.

Some may not be aware that vacations on a cruise ship are popular with those in the swinging community. Not every cruise will have those interested in swinging on board (it is unlikely overall), but cruise vacations are ideal for those interested in having fun with new partners.

Secret symbols will be placed on a door or worn to attract those who share the same experience. Pink flamingos are one of them.

The History Behind Pink Flamingo Meaning

A pink flamingo, through the years, has possessed several meanings. Depending on your age, you may know how the symbol has morphed through the decades. You may also not see how the meaning has changed, as it means one thing to you but now has a different connotation. This is when interesting situations can arise.

The pink flamingo was first created in 1957 by Don Featherstone. Union Products hired him to sculpt ducks and pink flamingos. The bird was originally used to brighten tract homes in post-World War II communities. It was a way to make your home stand out from other houses.

In subsequent decades, their popularity rose and fell. By the late 70s to early 80s, they were part of prank culture and symbolized a joke.  Don Featherstone was given the Nobel Art prize for the creation and later became Union Product’s president.

Pink flamingos began as a colorful lawn ornament. People joked about it being a Florida retirement staple. People also put pink plastic flamingos in a yard to indicate someone’s birthday. However, there has been some confusion regarding the meaning – no matter what decade you’re talking about.

What You Need to Know: When Did it Become a Swinging Symbol?

While it is unknown when the beautiful bird with the bright pink feathers became a secret symbol, it may have something to do with the fact it was initially used as a welcoming symbol. It used to be a symbol to show your hospitality and morphed from there.

Today, the pink flamingo meaning is used as an indicator of a swinging lifestyle. This type of symbol is not as common as the others, but it does exist. They may be innocent but can also have other meanings as well. Since they aren’t as prevalent now, sometimes you can innocently get away with wearing or displaying the symbol.

However, avoid getting attached to the symbol, as things have a way of changing over time. While the pink flamingo is a debated sign regarding swinging, it is still known. You may open yourself up to commentary or uncomfortable requests if this isn’t your intention.

Pink Flamingo Meaning

Pink flamingo symbolism is a more prevalent sign on cruises (to a lesser extent) and in an RV park. They are not used in online chat rooms or clothing to indicate swinging. This causes a bit of ambiguity in the swinging community because it lacks a direct meaning.

If attracting other swingers is your intention and goal, then you can display them. However, note that it is not a commonly used symbol. If you display a pink flamingo on a cruise, you may want to revert to the upside-down (or right-side-up) pineapple as stronger indicators. Due to the ambiguity, you may not be acknowledged if seen on a cruise, as most people seek the pineapple reference.

This is not to say that it won’t work, as swinging works on subtle signs. It is just more of an unknown sign. If you want to create a stronger “hint,” then most people incorporate the upside-down pineapple (right side up, now) and the pink flamingo as a more obvious cue.

The Flamingo Challenge

When placed on a cruise ship door, as mentioned, there is some ambiguity. Since flamingos are associated with summertime fun or cocktails, the symbol may have a dual meaning.

If seen, people can shrug it off, seeing it as someone being quirky. While this can make it the perfect subtle secret signal, it might be too subtle. Those who don’t know its meaning won’t respond.

If you are into swinging, then most experts state that you may have an easier time if you book on a swinger’s cruise rather than advertising using an upside-down pineapple or pink flamingo. However, due to the rise in awareness, you may also be pleasantly surprised.

If you are curious about what the pink flamingo meaning is on a cruise, you might need to examine the connotation closely. It could mean nothing, but it could also be a secret signal.

If you aren’t into swinging, you may want to avoid decorating your door with a pink flamingo, as it may be misleading. If you are interested in swinging, pair it with a pineapple, so the meaning isn’t lost.
