Princess Cruises Adds New Package Option for Passengers

Coffee lovers will be ecstatic about Princess Cruises’ newest addition to the beverage package lineup, the new Grounds Coffee Package, which covers espresso-based beverages and teas.

The package is now available fleet-wide, but costs and other terms vary on different ships depending on cruise length and itinerary.

New Grounds Coffee Package on Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises has quietly introduced a new beverage package option, just covering specialty coffees and teas – similar to the old “punch card” previously available.

Called the “Grounds Coffee Package” the option includes a “specified number of specialty coffees” though the number of coffees will vary on different cruise itineraries, presumably with more beverages included – at a higher price – for longer sailings.

Pricing is calculated to offer the pre-purchased number of specialty coffees or teas at a discount of approximately 20% of the full price if the drinks were purchased one at a time, without any beverage package savings. The actual discount will vary depending on the overall package cost and exact coffees ordered.

Guests who have the Grounds package may only get the included coffees at venues where espresso is available, as the drinks cannot be properly crafted at more general bars or lounge venues. The package can only be redeemed during each venue’s normal operating hours.

It should be noted that coffees ordered from room service or selected through stateroom mini bars are not included, nor are bottled or ready-to-drink items such as canned coffee.

If guests do not consume the number of coffees available in the pre-paid package, there will be no prorated refund or credit for drinks left at the end of the cruise. Furthermore, the package cannot be transferred to others, though specialty coffees can be shared if ordered by the purchaser.

Guests may buy the coffee package on board their cruise, or online up to four days prior to sailing to allow for adequate processing time to each guest’s account.

As with all beverage packages, an 18% gratuity will be added to the overall package cost for Grounds.

Isn’t Coffee Already Included?

Princess Cruises offers two other non-alcoholic drink packages in addition to the new Grounds Coffee Package. Specialty coffees and teas are included in the Zero-Alcohol Drink Package, which also includes fountain sodas, fresh juices, smoothies, and mocktails, as well as bottled water and energy drinks.

The Classic Soda Package, however, does not include coffees or teas of any kind. Guests can, however, choose to purchase specialty coffees or teas at a-la-carte pricing.

Both the Zero-Alcohol and Classic Soda packages are priced per person, per day, while the Grounds Coffee Package is based on the number of drinks, and those drinks can be consumed at any time during the cruise.

Specialty coffees and teas as also automatically included in both the Plus Beverage and Premier Beverage packages, which include alcoholic drinks, wines by the glass, and discounts on wine bottles, large bottles of water, and cans of soda.

Will Other Cruise Lines Offer Coffee Packages?

Because Princess Cruises is part of the Carnival Corporation & PLC family, there is speculation that similar specialty coffee packages may be introduced to other related cruise lines.

This could include Carnival Cruise Line, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises (including P&O Cruises Australia), Cunard Line, Holland America Line, and Seabourn.

It should be noted, however, that each cruise line offers different packages, inclusions, and options, and not all lines offer the same drink options.

Where specialty coffees are branded – such as Starbucks – it is unlikely they would be included in any package through the cruise line, as such offerings might be a violation of the agreements and licensing the cruise line has with the coffee retailer.

On April 2, 2023, the Norwegian Bliss sails for the Mexican Riviera, featuring award-winning celebrity chef Aaron Sanchez. A week later, on April 9, 2023, the Norwegian Encore takes guests to the Eastern Caribbean. The cruise will feature fourth-generation winemaker Miguel Torres, creator of the famous Mas La Plana wines.

On June 10, 2023, guests can enjoy the Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite Wine Dinner hosted by special guest Diane Flamand on board the Norwegian Bliss in Alaska.

Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite is among the world’s most prestigious wines. Diane Flamand will give guests a unique opportunity to experience some of the finest wines from the region.

In October 2023, NCL has three Meet the Winemaker cruises scheduled. On board the Norwegian Escape’s Bermuda sailing, guests can enjoy the wines of Michael Mondavi.

Norwegian Joy will host Gérard Bertrand, the “Drinks Business” Master Winemaker of the Year 2023 in the Western Caribbean. Finally, when Norwegian Escape returns to Bermuda, she will host Randy Ullom from the Kendall-Jackson family.

Norwegian Cruise Itinerary Dramatically Altered for Sustainability

Guests booked aboard the June 8, 2023 sailing of Norwegian Sky will have a dramatically different itinerary than originally planned. Ports of call have been rearranged and the length of every single port stay has been adjusted for a radical loss of time in port, all in the name of the cruise line’s global sustainability program, Sail & Sustain.

Ports Rearranged for Norwegian Sky

The June 8, 2023 sailing of Norwegian Sky is a 10-night roundtrip sailing from Miami, with seven ports of call from The Bahamas to Puerto Rico and many ports in between.

On the itinerary are Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island destination, as well as San Juan, St. Maarten, St. Johns, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Puerto Plata.

Norwegian Cruise Line has now reached out to travel partners and booked guests about changes for the sailing, however.

All the same ports of call are remaining on the cruise, but the itinerary has now been rearranged, and with Great Stirrup Cay moving from the first port of call to the last port visited. Likewise, Puerto Plata has been moved from the end of the original itinerary to the first port of call for the rearranged cruise.

More Than a Full Day Lost

The remaining five ports of call for the sailing will still be on the same days as originally scheduled, but every single port has had the visit times adjusted, with six out of seven ports now having shorter visit times, and only one port – Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic – extending the visit by just one hour.

The adjusted times are as follows:

  • Great Stirrup Cay – 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. will now be 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (-30 minutes)
  • San Juan – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. will now be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (-2 hours)
  • St. Maarten – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. will now be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (-3 hours)
  • St. John’s – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. will now be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (-4 hours)
  • St. Kitts – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.m will now be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (-4 hours)
  • St. Thomas – 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will now be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (-1.5 hours)
  • Puerto Plata – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will now be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (+1 hour)

In total, 14 hours of port time is being trimmed from the itinerary, more than a full day’s typical port visit time. This will impact the number of shore tours that can be offered and will trim any extra, at leisure time either guests or crew members may have been able to enjoy while in the port of call.

Any shore tours booked through Norwegian Cruise Line are being automatically adjusted to the new port visit days and times, and guests do not need to take any action to guarantee pre-booked tours.

Any guests who have made independent tour arrangements should contact their tour operators to make adjustments, request refunds if possible, or inquire about other options.

All for Sustainability

Norwegian Cruise Line is making these adjustments to support its global sustainability program.

“We are continually seeking opportunities to reduce our overall carbon footprint, and recently committed to pursuing net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and value chain by 2050,” the email explained. “To support this mission, we have optimized our arrival and departure times.”

By trimming the time in port, a cruise ship can sail at a slower speed between ports of call. Slower speeds are more efficient on the engines, reducing emissions, maximizing fuel efficiency, and reducing overall wear on the engines.

Norwegian has made similar changes to other ship’s itineraries recently, including adjustments to two Norwegian Getaway sailings in January, as well as a change to eight different Norwegian Joy departures from May through August, all removing Norfolk, Virginia from the itinerary.

How much difference these changes have made to the cruise line’s overall sustainability goals has not been disclosed, but may be shared at a later date with annual reports or other reviews.

Carnival Cruise Ship to Have Delayed Embarkation

Guests planning to board Carnival Vista for the ship’s February 25, 2023 departure will see a slight delay for embarkation, due to a medical disembarkation from the previous cruise that means the ship will be returning to Galveston later than originally planned.

This will also mean that guests departing the ship on Saturday may have difficulty making flights for travel home if applicable.

Carnival Vista Delayed for Medical Debarkation

Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked on the next sailing of Carnival Vista, scheduled to depart on Saturday, February 25, 2023, to inform them of an embarkation delay, similar to a recent delay aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas.

“Last night, Carnival Vista deviated course to disembark a guest who needed urgent medical care ashore,” the email read. “As a result, the ship will be arriving into Galveston later than scheduled tomorrow, and embarkation for your cruise will be revised.”

The medical debarkation was on Thursday night, but no further details have been released about the nature of the emergency in order to safeguard the privacy of the guest and their family or traveling companions.

No definite window for the ship’s arrival into Galveston has been confirmed, but tracking data estimates the ship’s time to dock at approximately 11:30 a.m. This would mean a delay of 3-4 hours from the originally scheduled 8 a.m. arrival. Undoubtedly the ship’s master will attempt to bring the ship in earlier if possible, but other marine traffic and local weather conditions must be taken into consideration.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with an update by 7:00 AM (CT) tomorrow,” the email explained.

Guests are being advised not to arrive at the cruise terminal until they receive that final update. Text alerts will be sent with information and can help booked guests stay informed as quickly as possible.

Any travelers who booked Carnival’s transfer services from local airports will have their transfer times automatically adjusted based on the revised embarkation time, which may mean longer waits in the airport before proceeding to the cruise terminal. This can help relieve congestion at the terminal and keep both debarkation and embarkation as smooth and efficient as possible.

The February 25 sailing of Carnival Vista is a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, calling on Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; and Roatan Island, Honduras. Because there is a day at sea prior to the first port visit, it is unlikely that any other changes will need to be made to the ship’s next cruise other than the delayed embarkation.

Onboard While Delayed

While guests waiting for the next cruise will have a slightly longer wait than anticipated, guests onboard Carnival Vista for the extra hours have different considerations, depending on the length of the delay.

Meal service and onboard activities will continue, with the ship’s Fun Squad quickly planning new games, dance lessons, or trivia contests to offer guests something to do during their extra time onboard if necessary. The casino may be open for a limited time, or extra retail sales could be offered.

While every cruise line will handle similar delays in whichever manner is best for the situation, guests may also be granted free internet access to help rearrange flights or other post-cruise plans as well.

Medical delays can happen at any time on any cruise, and guests should always plan for some flexibility in the pre- and post-cruise travel arrangements.

Carnival, for example, recommends that guests returning home the same day as a cruise ends book a flight no earlier than five hours after the ship is scheduled to arrive in port to minimize the risk of missing a flight if there is a slight delay, traffic or transportation problems, or other complications.

Cruise travel insurance can often help with expenses related to ship delays, and many experienced cruisers prefer to book flights at least a day or two ahead or after a cruise to ensure there is plenty of time in case of flight delays, cancellations, or missed connections.

Holland America Line Unveils New Cruise Tour Perk

Holland America Line marked Yukon Heritage Day on February 24 with a new incentive for residents of four U.S. states and a province of Canada who book certain Denali and Yukon cruise tours departing in summer 2023.

A credit of $150 for the first and second cabin occupants will be awarded to those hailing from California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, and Ontario.

Summer Incentive

Holland America Line rolled out a new perk designed to get more Americans and Canadians onboard for an Alaska cruise tour this summer. The cruise line has 16 cruise tours that feature Denali National Park and six options that include a Yukon extension.

A $150 spending money promotion is valid on cruises booked by March 31, and can be combined with the line’s existing Time of Your Life wave season offer, which was expanded earlier this year to include cruise tours.

The wave offer provides a stateroom upgrade, fare discounts, free cruises for children, and reduced deposits. Adding in the line’s Have It All premium package gives cruisers free tours, and dining, drinks, and WiFi packages. Holland America Line’s promotion follows on the heels of its Kids Cruise Free program, announced last week and valid on select itineraries.

Holland America Line Chief Commercial Officer Beth Bodensteiner said in the line’s Illinois offer, ”Summer is the perfect time for residents in the Midwest to escape heat and head to Alaska on a Cruisetour, and we’re excited to showcase the Holland America Line experience in the Yukon. Holland America Line is the only way to see Alaska and the Yukon with a combined cruise and overland vacation.”

Spending Money for Guests

Under the promotion, the first and second cruisers in a stateroom will receive $50 in onboard spending money, $50 in Denali Dollars, which can be used for dining, tours and shopping in Denali National Park, and $50 in Dawson Dollars, valid for dining and tours in the Yukon destination of Dawson City, the heart of Yukon Gold Rush territory.

The cruise tours combine an Alaska cruise with an overland trip to Denali and the Yukon. Trips range from 10 to 18 days and include either a three- or four-day Inside Passage cruise on the 2,650-guest Koningsdam or the 1,432-guest Volendam, or a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise on the 2,106-guest Nieuw Amsterdam or the 1,916-guest Noordam, plus a two- or three-night stay at Denali National Park and a journey into the Yukon.

Cruise tour guests sailing to the Last Frontier state also can take advantage of the line’s Alaska Up Close program, a set of destination-immersive activities tied to historical, cultural, culinary, and shoreside experiences. Events include workshops and lectures by destination experts, special tours, and dining events highlighting local culinary traditions.

Widely considered the pioneer cruise line in Alaska, Holland America Line has been sailing to the destination for 75 years. Its land extensions in the Yukon offers guests the chance to learn about the region’s Klondike Gold Rush heritage and other aspects of Yukon culture. Excursions even offer cruisers the chance to pan for gold.

Royal Caribbean Goes Behind-the-Scenes at Thrill Island

Royal Caribbean International has released the sixth episode of its “Making an Icon” series, this time offering an in-depth, insider look at “Creating Thrill Island” – one of the most hotly anticipated features of the upcoming Icon of the Seas.

Billed as a “theme park adventure” on board what will be the largest cruise ship in the world, Thrill Island includes a variety of adrenaline-inducing features for all ages and much more.

What Is Thrill Island?

One of eight distinct neighborhoods on Icon of the Seas, Thrill Island is located primarily on Deck 16, and is designed as a shipwrecked island with unique decorative details to immerse guests in the adventure.

“The whole notion behind Thrill Island is its this lost island,” said Jay Schneider, Chief Product Innovation Officer for Royal Caribbean.

Distressed wood accents, a sunken boat, vibrant colors, foliage-like shade, and beach-like pathways all contribute to the overall vibe of the space, immersing guests in a fun tropical adventure.

Small “artifacts” from famed explorers such as Ferdinand Magellan, the Wright Brothers, and Amelia Earhart can also be found in the space, adding a sense of history, exploration, and connection to the thrills as guests dive in to their vacation.

Thrill Island Features

Thrill Island is the most extensive theme-park-like space aboard any cruise ship ever designed, all based on consumer research about what families and cruise travelers want to experience with respect to thrills.

“On the thrill-o-meter, we wanted to make sure we maintained a proper balance, but we also wanted to make sure we took it all the way,” said Jennifer Goswami, Director of Product Development for Royal Caribbean. “On Thrill Island, it’s really our maxed out version of what we could do from a thrill perspective on a ship.”

One of the most thrilling features of the space is the Category 6 waterpark, the largest waterpark ever at sea with 17,010 square feet of splashtastic fun. Six record-breaking waterslides offer thrills for all, from dueling mat racing slides to the tallest drop slide at sea, the first open free fall waterslide on any cruise ship, and the first family raft slides ever at sea.

Waterslides aren’t the only key features of Thrill Island, however. Crown’s Edge is a heart-pumping ropes course, skywalk experience 154 feet above the ocean with an unexpected drop leading to a zip line. This pushes the boundaries beyond the deck of the ship, putting adventurers right over the water in an area never before accessible to guests.

Thrill Island will also include classic favorites found on all Royal Caribbean ships, including the rock climbing wall, Adrenaline Peak, with five lanes to challenge. Lost Dunes is the reimagined miniature golf course with extensive theming for more fun everyone can enjoy, and the FlowRider surf simulator is found in the starboard aft corner of Thrill Island.

Together, Thrill Island offers something for all ages, ideal for multi-generational families traveling together to enjoy the ultimate cruise vacation.

“No matter what your age, you can have a great time on Thrill Island,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean.

Technical Challenges

“Creating Thrill Island” doesn’t just promote the features of the adrenaline-inducing neighborhood, but also provides behind-the-scenes insights such as the engineering and construction challenges necessary to make the space a reality.

For example, two separate towers will support the massive waterslides, which has permitted longer slide designs that will reach faster speeds for even more thrilling fun.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas
Render Courtesy: Royal Caribbean

The weight of the space has also been a concern throughout design and construction, to ensure the safety and stability of the cruise ship overall. The more weight that is added to the upper decks of a cruise ship, the more the center of mass changes for the vessel, which can impact how it maneuvers.

Furthermore, the funnel area needed to be designed with respect to wind to ensure clean, fresh air as guests enjoy their time on the open deck.

Beyond the Thrills

Thrill Island is more than just an onboard theme park, however, and includes a full range of amenities. Plentiful seating is spread throughout the space, giving all family members great vantage points to watch the fun or take a relaxing break before jumping back into the adventures.

Guests will also find delicious food and dining throughout Thrill Island, including “Desserted” for specialty milkshakes including options for kids and adults, and “Base Camp” for burgers, sandwiches, and sides.

With so much to experience, guests aboard Icon of the Seas will have more than they could ever have imagined to experience when the ship sets sail in January 2024.

Disney Cruise Line Announces New Tier for Loyal Passengers

Disney Cruise Line has finally announced the loyalty benefits for Pearl level members of its Castaway Club program. The brand new tier is being introduced in time for the cruise line’s 25th anniversary this summer, celebrating guests who have sailed 25 magical cruise vacations.

Pearl Tier Benefits Announced

Disney Cruise Line has released details of the new Pearl level of its Castaway Club loyalty program. While none of the tiers have an extensive list of benefits, the perks Disney Cruise Line provides are well worth cruising with Disney multiple times. The new benefits will begin May 1, 2023.

For Pearl level, the first new benefit is the ability to book new itineraries four days before the general public, earlier than anyone else may be able to book a Disney cruise.

This ensures the most loyal guests have the widest variety of stateroom selections, destinations, and ships to choose from, before different options begin to sell out.

Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club
Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club Tiers

Pearl level guests will also be able to book onboard activities and Port Adventures (shore excursions) 123 days prior to setting sail on a booked cruise, which is three days earlier than the next highest loyalty level at 120 days.

This applies to specialty adult dining reservations, spa services, and other popular onboard activities that frequently sell out on every sailing.

Exclusive to Pearl level is a brand new benefit. All Pearl level guests will receive a complimentary unlimited digital photo package, ensuring they are able to capture every moment of these most magical vacations.

When purchased before sailing, the unlimited digital photo package can cost from $195 (USD) to $300 and higher, depending on the length of the cruise, as longer cruises will have more photo opportunities.

Guests can print out their digital photos for personal use under a limited license agreement, but the package does not include special occasion photography services or private portrait sessions. Digital access to photos expires 45 days after the photo is taken, and files are then deleted.

In addition to these exclusive benefits, Pearl members will also receive all the benefits awarded to lower loyalty tiers, including a dedicated member phone number for information and assistance, welcome aboard gifts, special discounts, and a complimentary dinner at Palo or Palo Steakhouse.

About the Pearl Tier

The Pearl tier of Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Club has only just been introduced, and anyone who has sailed on 25 or more Disney cruises is eligible for this most elite level of loyalty. Lower tiers start at Silver (1-4 sailings) and continue with Gold (5-9 sailings) and Platinum (10-24 sailings).

Unlike other cruise lines that calculate guest loyalty based on number of days sailed and may add extra points for more expensive staterooms such as suites or private areas, Disney Cruise Line only uses the number of cruises for their loyalty calculations.

The designation “Pearl” is very appropriate for guests sailing 25 or more cruises, as it takes time and patience for an oyster to craft a single, lustrous pearl, but the beautiful result is well worth waiting for. In history and culture, pearls represent innocence, purity, and loyalty – ideal for the image of Disney Cruise Line and its most loyal guests.

Silver Anniversary at Sea

In addition to unveiling the new Pearl loyalty tier, Disney Cruise Line is gearing up for its “Silver Anniversary at Sea” celebration. Special offerings and unique activities will be available on select sailings from May through September 2023, including exclusive entertainment, onboard activities, and commemorative retail merchandise.

The celebratory amenities will be available on all five Disney ships, but may vary on different vessels and sailings. Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for more details as they are announced ahead of the anniversary festivities!

Port Canaveral Becomes World’s Busiest Passenger Cruise Port

The record has been passed and Port Canaveral has taken over from PortMiami as the world’s busiest passenger cruise port.

The news comes as the 2022 passenger totals have been released from the Florida Ports Council, and Port Canaveral tops out at over 4 million passengers, a slim margin over PortMiami’s impressive numbers.

Busy Year for Port Canaveral

While the year began slowly with cruise lines continuing to limit guest capacity for health and safety restrictions, 2022 quickly gained momentum as cruise travel dramatically rebounded.

Thanks in part to Port Canaveral’s proximity to Orlando and the faster easing of local community restrictions in that part of Florida, compared to more stringent health and safety measures in the more populous communities of South Florida, the cruise port gained a slim lead over PortMiami to become the world’s busiest passenger cruise port.

Port Canaveral, US Homeport

In total, 4,072,396 multi-day cruise guests moved through Port Canaveral, edging out PortMiami’s updated 4,022,544 multi-day guests, an updated number directly from the port rather than 3,988,094 from Florida Ports Council.

“We’ve always aimed to be the best cruise port in the world, but what an achievement to now be known as the busiest,” said Captain John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO. “This historic milestone is testament to the efforts of our team and cruise partners to provide a best in class experience for all cruise guests sailing from Port Canaveral.”

Multi-day cruise guests are those passengers on a voyage lasting more than one day. Single day guests, on the other hand, are sailing on vessels such as casino boats or similar entertainment sailings but do not have overnight stays. Multi-day guests can include both homeport sailings as well as day port visits.

Other Florida Cruise Ports

Florida is home to four additional cruise ship homeports: Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale just 21 miles (34 kilometers) from Port Miami; Jaxport in Jacksonville in the state’s northeastern corner; Port Tampa Bay on the west coast; and Port of Palm Beach still further north from Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

None of the other homeports comes close to the passenger traffic of either Port Canaveral or PortMiami, though they all serve different cruise lines and offer great vacation options for guests.

Port Everglades saw 1.6 million passengers in 2022, while Jaxport, Port Tampa Bay, and Port of Palm Beach totaled 90,241, 418,200, and 188,235 guests, respectively.

Port of Key West is another popular cruise port in the Sunshine State and saw 198,411 guests, though the port is not used as a homeport, only as a port of call visit.

Totals to Rise Dramatically in Years to Come

It should be noted that all Florida’s multi-day cruise port passengers combined totaled 10.5 million guests. While this is an impressive total for a year when all cruise ships were not sailing the full year and restrictions still limited passengers, it is far below the 2019 total of 17.8 million, before the pandemic shutdown halted the cruise industry.

Florida Ports Council projects that the cruise industry in Florida ports should be close to 2019 levels in 2023, with even higher totals in years to come.

Forecasts for 2027 bring Port Canaveral to 6.4 million passengers that year, with PortMiami projected to host 8.4 million. Of course, port improvements at all Florida homeports will continue in the next few years to accommodate growth, welcome more advanced ships, and provide adequate security and safety for all vessels, crew, and guests who move through the ports.
