Royal Caribbean Removes Venues for Casino Expansions

Royal Caribbean International has removed the jazz clubs aboard three Oasis-class ships and converted the spaces to smoke-less casinos, using the interior outfitter Trimline to manage the conversions as the ships were in service. The changes are now complete aboard Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and Allure of the Seas.

Jazz Clubs Removed

The three oldest Oasis-class ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet no longer feature jazz clubs on Deck 4, but instead, now use the space for smoke-less casinos.

The “Jazz on 4” clubs, located forward in each ship near the main show lounge, were popular for live music and other activities, but the desire for smoke-free casino areas in recent years has risen and prompted the change.

The work to remove each jazz club and convert it to a casino space was done by “ride on squads” to complete the transformations without the need for dry dock accommodations or otherwise removing the ships from service. On each ship, the individual conversions took approximately two weeks.

Aboard Harmony of the Seas, for example, the work was completed from the end of February through mid-March.

Trimline provided an expert team of demolition and removal contractors, joiners, electricians, and decorators to complete the work, coordinating closely with data, casino, and IT specialists to ensure the work was efficient and did not disrupt ship operations for either guests or crew members. Meticulous pre-planning also helped the work proceed effectively without impacting the onboard experience.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Royal Caribbean on these conversions. The team has worked tirelessly to ensure that the work is delivered to the highest standards, and we are delighted with the results,” said Billy Morton, Trimline Project Manager. “We’re confident that these new smoke-less casinos will provide an enjoyable experience for the guests on board.”

Trimline has also been responsible for other cruise ship renovations, including modernizing suites, converting dining rooms, rebranding spaces, refitting public areas, and more for cruise lines such as TUI Cruises, Seabourn, and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. With more than 57 years’ experience, Trimline creates marine interiors not just for cruise ships, but also for ferries and military vessels.

What About Other Ships?

The three remaining Oasis-class vessels – Symphony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and the upcoming Utopia of the Seas – still show the same space on Deck 4, but for different uses.

Aboard Symphony of the Seas, the space is still labeled as “Jazz on 4” but it is possible the conversion is yet to be planned.

Wonder of the Seas, currently the world’s largest cruise ship and the youngest Oasis-class vessel, has the “Golden Room” in the same location, which is already a smoke-free casino. It is possible the success of the space, based not only on general use but also on guest feedback, may be what prompted the conversion aboard the other ships.

Official deck plans for the upcoming Utopia of the Seas, which will be the last of the Oasis-class vessels, also shows the space labeled as “Casino Royale Non-Smoking” but without any more specific name as yet. Utopia of the Seas will set sail from Port Canaveral in July 2024.

Non-Smoking Trends

According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking rates in the United States have dropped by nearly 50% in the past 18 years, from 20.9% of adults in 2005 to just 11.5% of adults in 2021. Younger adults (under age 25) are even less likely to smoke, meaning this trend is likely to continue in years to come.

By reducing smoking spaces onboard cruise ships and providing more smoke-free areas, cruise lines are updating their policies and spaces to the preferences of younger cruisers.

This can be especially relevant for Royal Caribbean, which is rapidly positioning itself as a more family-oriented cruise line with amazing ship amenities and designs that appeal to younger families, such as the new Surfside neighborhood on the upcoming Icon of the Seas.

It remains to be seen whether or not there are further changes to other ships, as well as aboard other cruise lines, to remove smoking spaces or to provide more smoke-free alternatives for passengers to enjoy.

Bahamas Delays Cruise Passenger Tax Increase

The Bahamas government has announced a delay in implementing a controversial increase in cruise passenger taxes. The new tax rates, originally slated to take effect in July 2023, will now commence in January 2024.

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy has been a vocal opponent of the increased tax rates for cruise passengers, saying people are tired of being forced to pay increased taxes while on holiday.

Government and Industry Reacts to Tax Delay

Through Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, the Bahamas government has announced that implementing a tax rate increase for cruise ship passengers has been delayed until January 1, 2024.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, the decision comes after careful consideration of concerns from the cruise industry.

Cruise passengers departing from Freeport, Nassau, and Bimini were to see a rise in their taxes from $18 to $23, while passengers only visiting a cruise line’s private island, such as Perfect Day at CocoCay or Half Moon Cay, would face a higher tax of $25.

Cooper stated to Eyewitness News: “Nobody wants their taxes to increase. They’ve made certain representations. We’ve taken those into consideration. The Prime Minister and I have spoken, and we will speak at the Cabinet level. Suffice it to say we have already given a seven months delay in the implementation of the tax. The tax does not come into force until January 2024.”

The revised plan also includes a $5 tourism environmental tax and a $2 tourism enhancement tax on each cruise passenger. Cruise lines and their guests have had mixed reactions to the proposed tax increase.

Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line President, previously expressed her hope for a delay, stating:“There’s a lot of development happening in The Bahamas, and we’re working with the officials in The Bahamas to see if, at least, it can get pushed out.”

“Look, if I’m on a budget, this is my budget. This is what I can spend. But I mean, look at resort taxes and resort fees. I don’t want to say people have gotten used to it, but it has been piling on,” Duffy continued.

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard voiced worries about potential repercussions on local tourism, cautioning that new passenger taxes could motivate cruise ships to seek cheaper destinations.

Tax Increase Could Land Bahamas $95 Million in One Year

Despite the delay, the government has no plans to cancel the tax increase and still aims to significantly boost its revenue from departing cruise passengers. It projects $145 million in revenue in the 2023 to 2024 budget, a sharp increase from $50 million in the current fiscal year.

Since the global pause in operations, the cruise industry has been instrumental in rebuilding the Bahamian tourism industry. Cruise ship arrivals rose to 5,390,016 in 2022 from 1,115,181 in 2021 and have been instrumental in driving economic recovery.

The Bahamas has every right to profit from the sharp increase in arrivals, which is expected to significantly increase with the port infrastructure improvements in Nassau and upcoming projects such as Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club and Disney’s Lighthouse Point.

However, it’s crucial to balance the benefits against the potential backlash from the cruise industry regarding the proposed tax increases.

The delayed implementation to 2024 offers cruise companies time to adjust and implement the charges, which will be added to guests’ cruise fares.

However, ongoing negotiations will be critical to maintaining The Bahamas as a premier cruise destination while ensuring a fair contribution to the local economy.

Successful Rescue of Passenger Overboard Royal Caribbean Ship

A guest who accidentally fell overboard from a Royal Caribbean ship has been safely rescued thanks to quick action from crew members. The incident happened on Sunday, June 25, 2023, from Mariner of the Seas while the ship was sailing a day at sea en route to the first port of call on its current sailing.

Passenger Overboard From Mariner of the Seas

Guests onboard Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas have reported a brief overboard situation that was quickly resolved with a successful rescue on Sunday, June 25.

A female passenger was reportedly sitting on the ship’s railing to take a photo, when she slipped and fell into the water, but the circumstances of the incident have not been confirmed.

Crew members were quickly alerted and the ship was turned around to recover the passenger. A smoke flare was used to mark their position in the water, and the ship’s pilot boat was dispatched to bring her back aboard.

During the rescue operation, the ship’s cruise director kept guests onboard updated through public address announcements. Deck 4 portside was closed to permit crew members to more efficiently conduct the rescue.

No further details have been released about the guest’s identity, condition, or the complete circumstances that led to the fall. It is also unknown at this time what deck the guest fell from, or whether it was from a public deck or a stateroom balcony.

As with any overboard incident, there will be a thorough investigation to be sure all safety procedures and response protocols were in place and worked effectively.

No Impact on Current Sailing

The incident happened in the afternoon hours as the ship was southeast of the Dominican Republic. Mariner of the Seas is currently sailing an 8-night “Southern Caribbean & Perfect Day” itinerary that departed Port Canaveral on Friday, June 23.

The first two days of the cruise, including Sunday, have been days at sea, and the ship will call on Curacao, Aruba, and CocoCay before returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday, July 1.

The ship resumed course shortly thereafter, and the incident did not impact the overall itinerary.

This is not the first successful rescue of a passenger overboard from Mariner of the Seas. In 2016, while the ship was sailing from Shanghai, a 31-year-old woman accidentally fell over the railing and was rescued after spending an astonishing 38 hours in the ocean.

The 140,000-gross ton, Voyager-class Mariner of the Seas is currently homeported from Port Canaveral, offering a variety of Southern, Eastern, and Western Caribbean sailings, as well as the occasional Bermuda itinerary, with cruises ranging from 4-8 nights depending on departure date.

In May 2024, the ship will reposition to Galveston to begin offering 4- and 5-night Western Caribbean cruises from the popular Texas homeport.

PortMiami Reopens Nearly 12 Hours After Boat Collision

PortMiami reopened at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2023, almost 12 hours after the early-morning boat collision that caused a fatality, sunken wreckage, and channel closure, thus prohibiting three large cruise ships from reentering the port at the end of their sailings.

Emergency personnel were able to successfully clear the channel and ensure the safety of the returning vessels, however, and the debarkation and subsequent embarkation of nearly 30,000 cruise passengers has begun.

PortMiami Now Reopen

Once the sunken boat wreckage was safely lifted from the Government Cut at PortMiami, the cruise port was able to successfully reopen and welcome back the three cruise ships scheduled to debark and embark passengers today: Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration.

All three cruise ships had been anchored just outside the channel since the port was closed in the early morning hours, awaiting updates from port authorities and the US Coast Guard for clearance to enter the port.

The port was closed at approximately 3:40 a.m., when a 30-foot boat collided with the Fisher Island Ferry just east of Dodge Island, the location of the cruise ship terminals.

One person was killed in the accident, another was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. No other circumstances of the incident have been released and the investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the collision, who may have been at fault, and what the consequences may be.

A barge with crane equipment was brought in to salvage the sunken vessel, while divers conducted inspections to ensure the channel’s safety.

As the port has reopened, the 165,000-gross ton Norwegian Escape was the first vessel to enter the channel and dock, followed by the 169,400-gross ton MSC Seascape, and finally, the 183,500-gross ton Carnival Celebration.

By 3:45 p.m., all three vessels had entered the channel, and Norwegian Escape had already completed docking. Together, the three ships are carrying in excess of 15,000 travelers, as well as thousands of crew members.

As each ship docks, it will need not only to debark passengers as well as any crew members who may be at the end of their ship contracts, but also take on supplies for the next sailing.

Keeping Guests Informed

All three cruise lines have worked diligently to keep guests onboard the ships and those embarking for today’s departures informed throughout the day with text messages, emails, and letters handed out at the cruise terminals.

While the situation has been well beyond the cruise lines’ control, each one has sought to help keep guests comfortable as the day progressed.

Guests onboard had various announcements whenever new information was available, and crew members worked to provide food, beverages, and entertainment options.

For travelers whose cruises will now be starting hours later than anticipated, the cruise lines have provided onboard credit ($20 per person for MSC Seascape and Carnival Celebration, and $25 for Norwegian Escape) to compensate for today’s lunch costs, as well as recommendations for where to go nearby for shopping, dining, or entertainment.

Carnival Cruise Line has also provided complimentary shuttles for its guests to visit Bayside Marketplace, a nearby shopping center with a variety of food options. A Carnival staff member has also been onsite at Bayside Marketplace to keep guests informed throughout the day.

“This is not the way we expected to start your cruise, and we appreciate your patience and understanding,” one update from Carnival read. Each ship is anticipating debarkation to last 2-3 hours, with embarkation for the next sailings to begin shortly thereafter.

In the late afternoon, Norwegian Cruise Line informed incoming guests that they expected to begin check-in at 7 p.m., with embarkation starting at approximately 9 p.m. “Please do not arrive to the port prior to 6 p.m.,” the NCL notification said, in an effort to minimize traffic and crowding.

Similarly, MSC Cruises advised incoming guests that embarkation would not likely begin until 5 p.m. “We currently expect to start embarkation no earlier than 5:00 p.m.,” the MSC letter read. “We will promptly inform you as soon as we have a clear idea of when we will be ready to welcome you on board.”

Will the Next Itineraries Be Impacted?

There is no word yet on whether or not the next sailings of each vessel may be altered to account for the late start. Each ship is scheduled to begin a 7-night sailing today, with all three vessels departing on Eastern Caribbean voyages.

While each ship has a different itinerary and different ports of call, all three are scheduled to spend Monday, June 26 at sea.

This can make it easy for each ship to make up for lost time by adjusting the sailing speed to compensate, which should mean the overall itinerary is not dramatically impacted.

Each cruise line will, of course, make any schedule change decisions based on overall sailing routes, planned times in port, and cruising speeds, and those changes will be communicated to passengers when any adjusted plans are confirmed.

Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with the families of the individuals involved in this morning’s accident, and good wishes go out to all impacted passengers for smooth sailings on their slightly delayed cruises.

Accident Closes Major Cruise Homeport, Multiple Ships Delayed

An early morning accident at PortMiami has closed the popular homeport to all cruise and cargo traffic, creating a major impact to multiple cruise ships that are now waiting outside the channel for clearance to enter the port for docking. As yet, there is no timeline for when the port will reopen and passengers will be permitted to debark, or how delayed the next cruises may be.

Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration are all impacted by the incident and are currently on hold for debarkation and embarkation for their next sailings.

Boat Collision Closes PortMiami Channel

According to local news reports, a 30-foot boat collided with the Fisher Island Ferry in the Government Cut channel at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

One person was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, and another person was found deceased in the water at the accident scene.

Government Cut is the manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, providing a direct route between PortMiami and Biscayne Bay.

This is the exit route from PortMiami that all cruise ships use. The crash happened just east of Dodge Island, where the cruise terminals are located.

The US Coast Guard, which is responsible for the safety and security of Government Cut, has established a temporary security zone in the area that limits all incoming and outgoing marine traffic while the incident is investigated, and to be sure debris is safely cleared and will not endanger any other vessels.

Cruise Ships Delayed

Three large cruise ships are impacted by this ongoing situation: Norwegian Escape, MSC Seascape, and Carnival Celebration.

Together, the three ships, which are among the largest in their respective fleets, are carrying as many as 15,000 passengers. When counting incoming guests boarding the ships today, there are more than 30,000 travelers impacted by these delays.

As of 10 a.m., the port remains closed, and cruise travelers are being advised to wait before heading to the terminals.

“We will continue to monitor the situation,” John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador, said. “Please do not proceed to the cruise terminal until you receive our final update. We apologize for the delay. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.”

Text messages and emails will continue to be sent to incoming guests to keep them updated about the timing of today’s embarkation.

Onboard the Waiting Ships

Guests onboard the three delayed ships are being updated as much as possible, and each ship’s crew is working to provide additional activities and entertainment as available. Guests will be asked to vacate their staterooms in order for the housekeeping staff to turn over the rooms for the next cruise, but public areas will be available for waiting.

No food or beverage services are interrupted on the waiting cruise ships, and there are no safety concerns as the vessels wait for clearance to proceed into the port.

Norwegian Escape is completing a 7-night Caribbean sailing that included visits to the Dominican Republic, the Virgin Islands, and Great Stirrup Cay. The cruise departing today is an identical itinerary.

MSC Seascape is finishing a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise that visited the cruise line’s private island destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, as well as Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. Today’s departing cruise is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing that is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nassau, and Ocean Cay.

Carnival Celebration is ending an 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage that visited Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, and the ship’s next sailing is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and St. Maarten.

At this time, there is no update as to whether or not any of the waiting ships will need to adjust their itineraries to compensate for this delay. Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for further updates on this developing story.

New Deepwater Berth Opens for Larger Cruise Ships

Portland Port in Dorset, UK has officially opened a new deepwater berth, with more than 150 guests on hand to celebrate the occasion. The new berth is part of a £26 million ($33 million USD) development project, the largest in the port’s history, and will enable the port to welcome two 350-meter (1,148 feet) ships simultaneously.

New Berth Now Open at Portland Port

The newest berth at Portland Port has officially opened and features an extended, deepwater berth 250m (820 feet) long with alongside water depth of 12m (39 feet), making it capable of handling larger cruise ships such as Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum-class vessels, Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-class ships, or the largest ships from Cunard Line, P&O Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line.

To mark the occasion, the Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, unveiled a commemorative plaque in front of port employees, tenants, dignitaries, and other invitees.

The development project began in September 2022, and also includes a 75m (246 feet) extension to the existing Outer Coaling Pier, which can be used as a cruise berth for vessels up to 250m (820 feet). Quayside space has been extended by 16,000 square meters, meaning that two large vessels can be docked simultaneously.

“This redevelopment is a tremendous vote of confidence in the port and the local economy,” said Bill Reeves, chief executive of Portland Port.

“It is the largest single investment in Portland Port and its infrastructure in its history, and one of the large redevelopment projects in the area in recent years. It sets the stage for significant further growth in the future at the port and for the local economy through jobs and local supply chain.”

The new berth actually opened April 28, 2023, with a visit from MSC Virtuosa, but the official opening ceremony was not held until June 23, 2023, when the finishing details of the facility were complete.

The scale of the project and the ambitious timeline – finishing the major redevelopment work in less than nine months – required amazing cooperation between development partners.

“I am delighted to see the berth fully operational having been delivered early and on budget,” said Kevin Valentine, managing director at Knights Brown, the construction and engineering company in charge of the project.

“When we embarked on delivering this for the port there were many who thought that it couldn’t be delivered within the required timescale, cost, and quality. However, through true collaboration between all partners on the project we have achieved everything that we set out to.”

Cruising to Dorset

Portland Port is expecting a record number of cruise travelers to pass through the port over the cruise season, with as many as 130,000 travelers making use of the facility.

In total, cruise travel will bring an estimated £10 million ($12.7 million USD) to the local economy, and the cruise season runs from April through the end of October or into early November.

The port has been in commercial operation since 1996, and this year, vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, TUI Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Holland America Line, and more are scheduled to visit to enjoy the region’s unique history, natural beauty, and distinctly English character.

Carnival Cruise Ship Hosts Special Bahamas Celebration

Carnival Cruise Line is celebrating one of its most amazing and most popular cruise destinations with a Golden Jubilee Breakfast in honor of the nation’s 50th anniversary of independence.

The event, hosted onboard Carnival Legend during a visit to Freeport, included approximately 100 community members and leaders of The Bahamas as well as cruise line executives.

Golden Jubilee Celebration Breakfast

In partnership with the Ministry of Grand Bahama, Carnival Cruise Line welcomed national leadership members and other distinguished guests to a celebratory breakfast to mark the island nation’s 50th anniversary of independence.

The breakfast was hosted aboard the Spirit-class Carnival Legend on Friday, June 23, as the ship was docked in Freeport during the current 7-night cruise, which set sail from Baltimore on Sunday, June 18.

Already the ship has visited two other ports of call in The Bahamas – Nassau, the capital city, as well as Princess Cays, one of Carnival Cruise Line’s private island destinations.

“Carnival offers our heartfelt congratulations to The Bahamas on this milestone anniversary and we are proud to have been operating in the country for the last 50 plus years,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

During the breakfast, 35 Grand Bahama parliamentarians were presented with awards to recognize their service to the nation and their communities.

Bahamian Independence

The Bahamas was granted independence from the United Kingdom in the summer of 1973, with then Prince Charles (now King Charles III) delivering the official documents of independence on July 10, which is now celebrated as Independence Day.

Now, the beautiful island nation is in full celebratory swing to mark 50 years of independence, with festivities including a National Float Parade and Nationwide Motorcade, a special display of historical artifacts, life music, and countless local festivals, parties, and get-togethers.

Carnival Cruise Line is likewise celebrating the diverse and distinctive nation, which the cruise line has enjoyed visiting since the very first Mardi Gras set sail in 1972.

Celebrating in Freeport

The choice to host the celebration while docked in Freeport wasn’t just coincidental, it also shows the cruise line’s commitment to The Bahamas as construction continues on the new $200 million (USD) cruise port on Grand Bahama Island.

“We could not think of a better way to celebrate than with the Ministry of Grand Bahama as we work together to bring Carnival’s cruise port destination to life, which will bring millions of visitors to experience the beauty and culture of Grand Bahama,” said Duffy.

Carnival Ship at Freeport

Construction on the new destination began in May 2022, and the project is focused on creating a uniquely Bahamian experience to showcase the nation’s distinctive culture as well as to provide great new economic opportunities for Bahamians.

“As we reflect on the 50th anniversary of our independence, I am so excited about the road ahead for Grand Bahama,” said Ginger Moxey, the Minister for Grand Bahama. “We say a big thank you to Carnival for continuing to be a part of this community, holding this anniversary celebration here in Grand Bahama and bringing a new cruise port to our island.”

The new port development will include a nature reserve, food and beverage vendors, Bahamian-operated retail, a white-sand beach, ground transportation hub, an indoor pool, and more. It will be able to host two Excel-class ships, such as Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, or Carnival Jubilee simultaneously, and is expected to open in late 2024.

Holland America Rolls Out Immersive Excursions in Europe

Holland America Line has forged a partnership with a prestigious exploration group that will bring new, immersive experiences to guests sailing aboard its ships in the Mediterranean in the summer of 2023. The program is offered on two ships, Oosterdam and Nieuw Statendam.

Line Announces National Geographic Partnership

This summer, immersive experiences on two Holland America Line ships will reach new heights thanks to a collaboration between the cruise line and National Geographic.

A series of new shore excursions led by National Geographic-trained specialist guides will allow Mediterranean cruise guests to connect more deeply with local people and landmarks.

The program, called National Geographic Day Tours, is available onboard the 1,964-guest Oosterdam and the 2,106-guest Nieuw Statendam.

Four excursions are offered on 7- to 14-day itineraries departing from Trieste, Italy; Athens, Greece, and Barcelona, Spain, with port calls in Rhodes and Santorini, Greece, Kusadas, Turkey, and Naples, Italy.

We are continually looking for enriching and transformative experiences for our guests and the new National Geographic Day Tours are not only immersive, but provide exclusive access and hands-on experiences, said Carole Biencourt, vice president of shore tour experience for Holland America Line.

“We are pleased to offer them to guests across our Mediterranean itineraries that visit these ports and will look to expand the program in the near future,” she added.

Immersive Experiences Are Key to Programs

The National Geographic tours are: “A Day in the Life of a Marine Biologist,” in Naples, “Meet the Locals in Santorini,” “Influential Women in Turkey: From Past to Present,” in Kusadasi, and “The Fascinating World of Bees,” in Rhodes.

During the Santorini excursion, for example, guests will spend a day at the homes of two Santorini families, learning about their lives on the island and enjoying regional wine and cuisine. Guests also will visit the island’s famous blue-domed church, Panagia Kalamiotissa, and tour a winery.

On another day tour, in Kusadasi, cruise guests will learn about the women who have influenced Turkish society from ancient to modern times. Touring features the Temple Artemis and the House of the Virgin Mary, in Ephesus.

Also, on this excursion, a local chef will lead a tour of the Yedi Bilgeler winery, which still cultivates vines said to be 2,000 years old. A wine-pairing menu is included in the winery tour.

In the Mediterranean this summer, Oosterdam and Nieuw Statendam offer a wide variety of itineraries. On Oosterdam’s 12-day Adriatic Dream, sailing from Rome to Trieste on July 26, port calls include Naples, Santorini, Iraklion, in Crete, Athens, Kusadasi, and Kotor, in Montenegro, among other destinations.

A Record of Expanding Guest Experiences

Holland America Line, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2023, in recent years, has grown its roster of immersive experiences.

The line’s Alaska Up Close program was expanded this summer to include new activities such as workshops, lectures, and Exploration Central Talks that feature local Alaskans, plus local culinary events like an Alaskan-inspired brunch. Tours also highlight the Huna Tlingit native peoples.

Also, earlier this year, the Carnival Corporation brand unveiled a new category of longer, destination-immersive sailings called Legendary Voyages, featuring a series of itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days.
