Developing Storm Forces Royal Caribbean to Cancel Entire Cruise

Royal Caribbean International has reached out to guests booked aboard the September 23, 2023 sailing of Vision of the Seas to notify them that, due to forecasted poor weather in the region, it will not be possible to set sail after all and the cruise is now cancelled.

Significant compensation is being offered, though travelers will undoubtedly be disappointed by the short notice and loss of their cruise vacation.

Vision of the Seas Cruise Cancelled

Guests ready to set sail on their cruise vacation on Saturday, September 23, 2023 aboard Vision of the Seas will not be cruising after all, as the sailing has been cancelled at the last minute.

Royal Caribbean International notified guests late on September 21 with the unfortunate news, owing to a developing tropical storm that is forecast to dramatically impact the area over the weekend and early next week.

“Unfortunately, the weather will prevent us from safely conducting our upcoming cruise on Vision of the Seas, and we’ll have to cancel our September 23rd, 2023 sailing,” the notification read.

Vision of the Seas is homeported from Baltimore, Maryland, and the September 23 sailing was to have been a 5-night cruise to Bermuda, with no other ports of call available.

“While these circumstances are beyond our control, we understand that this change impacts your vacation, and we’re truly sorry,” the cruise line apologized.

The 78,340-gross ton ship can welcome 2,050 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 2,514 travelers when fully booked. Also onboard are more than 700 international crew members.

Generous Compensation Offered

While the cancellation is unavoidable, Royal Caribbean is being generous with the compensation offered to make up for the change.

All guests will receive a 100% refund not only of the cruise fare, taxes, and fees, but also on any pre-paid tours, gratuities, shore excursions, and onboard expenses such as drink packages or Wi-Fi connectivity. Flights purchased through Royal Caribbean International as well as any royal Caribbean Travel Protection will also be fully refunded.

Refunds will be processed within 14 business days, but guests should note that the exact time to receive the refund may vary depending on different financial institution policies.

If travelers used a future cruise credit (FCC) to book this sailing, that credit will be reinstated and any additional funds paid above the FCC amount will be refunded.

All guests will also receive another FCC worth 50% of their cruise fare to be used toward any future Royal Caribbean cruise. The new cruise must be booked no later than December 31, 2023, and is applicable for any available sailings by that date.

Potential Tropical Storm Developing

The rough weather impacting Vision of the Seas is currently classified as a “potential tropical cyclone” in that it has not yet developed full rotation or a discernable eye, but is likely to do so sometime on Friday.

The center of the storm is currently positioned 620 miles (998 kilometers) east of Bermuda, moving north at 14 miles per hour (23 kilometers per hour). The maximum sustained winds are reported at 50 mph (80 kph), and expected to strengthen somewhat in the next day.

The storm’s track indicates strong impact on the Atlantic coast, from North Carolina as far north as New Jersey. This puts Vision of the Seas‘ homeport, Baltimore, right in the middle of the storm’s track. Tropical storm warnings are already in effect for the potential impact area, including inside Chesapeake Bay.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen

While the center of the storm will not reach the Baltimore area until Sunday afternoon, the broad wind field of the system could be having impacts on the area 24 hours before or even sooner – just when Vision of the Seas would be maneuvering through the bay.

The safety of the ship, guests, and crew members is the most important consideration, and while it is never ideal to completely cancel a sailing, the decision is the best one possible to keep everyone safe.

At this time, there is no indication if the ship’s next sailing – a 9-night Canada & New England cruise departing Baltimore on Thursday, September 28 – will be affected.

By Thursday, the storm should be either fully dissipated or will have moved far out of the area. Guests booked on that next sailing, however, will want to stay in close contact with Royal Caribbean in case of any updates.

Loyalty Benefits Unavailable for Guests on Carnival Cruise

Carnival Cruise Line has notified guests setting sail aboard Carnival Freedom as the ship begins her transatlantic crossing to Spain for dry dock that some of the most sought after benefits typically provided to returning guests will not be available on this cruise.

This is due to the high number of loyal guests booked on this particular sailing, and is a step the cruise line has had to take with other popular sailings.

VIFP Benefits Reduced Aboard Carnival Freedom

Guests aboard Carnival Freedom as the Conquest-class vessel departs Port Canaveral, Florida en route to Barcelona, Spain, will not be able to take advantage of some of the most desirable benefits of loyalty status. In a notification sent just a week before embarkation, the cruise line explained which benefits could not be offered.

As the concern is only related to loyalty benefits at the top tier Diamond and Platinum VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) status, the letter was only given to guests who have achieved that level with the cruise line.

“Due to the high number of Diamond and Platinum guests joining us on this voyage, we will not be able to provide priority embarkation or debarkation (including at any of the ports of call),” the letter said.

The letter also indicated that guests would not be able to remain in their staterooms until after 1:30 p.m. on embarkation day, though they could drop off any carry-on luggage before heading to lunch. Finally, Diamond level guests would not be guaranteed main dining room seating requests for dinner.

“This operational change is consistent with other Carnival Journeys cruises where we have a very large number of Diamond and Platinum guests,” the letter explained. “We apologize for any disappointment and thank you for your understanding.”

For example, Carnival Cruise Line also removed these loyalty benefits from the maiden voyage of Carnival Venezia in May 2023.

No information is available about the exact numbers of Diamond or Platinum passengers onboard this 13-night transatlantic sailing, but it is likely that there are hundreds of guests who would qualify for the benefits.

Carnival Freedom can welcome 2,980 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 3,754 guests if fully booked with all berths filled. All other loyalty benefits, including VIFP gifts, special events, and casino benefits remain intact.

Carnival Freedom on Her Way to Spain

Carnival Freedom departed Port Canaveral at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023 for the one-way trip to Spain, where the ship will enter dry dock for upgrades and general maintenance.

Before arriving in Spain, the ship will visit Bermuda on Sunday, September 24; Ponta Delgada in the Azores on Friday, September 29; and Malaga and Valencia in Spain on October 2 and 3, respectively, before arriving in Barcelona on Wednesday, October 4.

The ship will be out of service for approximately one month, before setting sail from Barcelona on October 23, 2023 to return to Port Canaveral by way of Valencia, Malaga, the Canary Islands, and Bermuda, arriving back in Florida on November 6, 2023, refreshed and ready to welcome guests.

Dry Dock Plans

This dry dock is of particular interest, as Carnival Freedom is currently unique in the Fun Ship fleet.

The ship’s iconic “whale tail” funnel was damaged in a fire in May 2022, and interim repairs involved removing the characteristic wings from the funnel structure. The remaining structure was fully functional, but the ship has been sailing for more than a year without that instantly recognizable feature.

A new whale tail funnel is to be installed during the dry dock in Spain, returning the ship to the classic look that has graced every Carnival ship since Tropicale was first constructed for the line in 1982.

Another key feature will also be added to Carnival Freedom during this dry dock. The ship is scheduled to receive the new red, white, and blue livery that initially debuted with Mardi Gras in 2021, and has gradually been rolled out across the fleet as ships have had dry dock updates.

Other regular maintenance and refreshment of public areas as well as guest staterooms will be part of the dry dock as well, and in a month’s time, the 110,000-gross ton Carnival Freedom will be upgraded, renovated, and ready to set sail once more with all the charismatic fun of every Carnival ship.

Royal Caribbean Retracts Previous Decision on Cancelled Cruise

Royal Caribbean International has reached out to guests booked on a Freedom of the Seas cruise that was cancelled almost three months ago to let them know that the sailing is not, in fact, cancelled after all.

Now, guests have an additional option to restore their original cruise, even if they had opted to rebook, change to a different sailing, or outright cancel their previous vacation plans.

Freedom of the Seas Cruise Not Cancelled – Three Months After It Was Cancelled

Guests previously booked on the December 21, 2024 sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas sailing have received unusual notifications – that their cruise, which was cancelled in June, is now not cancelled after all.

“We recently communicated to you about the unfortunate cancellation of your upcoming 2024 sailing onboard Freedom of the Seas,” the email explained. “This was due to a dry dock we had to schedule, but we’ve got some good news – we were able to adjust our scheduling and your previous sailing will be made available again!”

Freedom of the Seas

At the time of the original cancellation, guests were given three options: to select an alternative sailing from a list of available cruises onboard Freedom of the Seas or Oasis of the Seas, rebooking on any other Royal Caribbean sailing, or else choosing a full refund of their cruise.

Now, even though guests all made those prior decisions, travelers can return to the originally scheduled cruise departing December 21, 2024 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 8-night Eastern Caribbean holiday cruise will visit St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, and Labadee.

Options to Resume the Original Cruise

Impacted travelers have three options to reset their vacation plans back to the original sailing, if they wish to do so.

First, if guests moved to one of the specially offered select sailings, they can return to the original cruise in a comparable stateroom with protected pricing or a reduced fare if the new rate is lower. Any overpayment would then be refunded to the original form of payment.

The same deal is available for guests who rebooked on any other Royal Caribbean International sailing, if they would like to return to the original Freedom of the Seas cruise.

In both cases, guests can also opt to remain on their current booking, which was made in replacement of the Freedom of the Seas cruise when it was first cancelled.

If guests had chosen to cancel their vacation plans altogether when the first cruise was cancelled, it is now possible to reinstate that original booking with protected pricing or at the new cruise rate, if lower than previously booked.

Travelers who do want to reinstate their cruise – whether they had rebooked or cancelled – must contact the cruise line or their travel agent by October 3, 2023 to confirm their decision.

“Thank you for understanding,” the email concludes. “Whether you choose to rejoin us on the Freedom of the Seas or on another cruise in the future, we have no doubt your time with us will be nothing short of amazing.”

The 156,271-gross ton Freedom of the Seas can welcome 3,782 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 4,515 travelers when fully booked with all berths filled.

No explanation other than “we were able to adjust our scheduling” has been offered for why the cruise has reappeared, just as there was very little information given for the initial cancellation other than “dry dock for routine maintenance and exciting improvements.”

There is no indication of whether the dry dock schedule has been moved earlier, postponed later, or cancelled altogether.

Because the impacted sailing is 15 months away, guests have plenty of time to consider their options and make the best holiday vacation plans possible for their cruising wishes.

It is also likely that with the impending drydock rescheduled, other cruises are also affected. Any guests who had a sailing cancelled on Freedom of the Seas in recent months should stay alert for possible notification and rebooking options.

Disney Cruise Line Expands Popular Feature to Third Cruise Ship

Disney Cruise Line has revealed that its wearable technology, DisneyBand+, will soon be making its way to a third ship in the fleet—Disney Magic.

This follows the introduction of the technology on the company’s newest cruise ship, Disney Wish, and the subsequent rollout on Disney Fantasy earlier in July of this year.

DisneyBand+ Comes to Disney Magic

Disney Cruise Line’s DisneyBand+ will be introduced on a third cruise ship, Disney Magic, starting October 22, 2023. The popular wearable can already be used on two ships: Disney Wish since spring 2023 and Disney Fantasy since July 2023.

While exact dates for bringing DisneyBand+ to the two other Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Dream and Disney Wonder, are yet to be announced, Disney Cruise Line has confirmed that the technology will be available fleet-wide by the end of 2023.

In a statement on social media platform X, Disney announced: “More magic and convenience is heading your way!  We’re excited to announce that DisneyBand+ is now on sale for guests sailing aboard the #DisneyMagic starting October 22nd. Eligible guests may place orders between 45 and 11 days prior to sailing.”

Initially a hit at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort under the name MagicBand+, Disney Cruise Line has modified the technology for the unique conditions of life at sea. Dubbed DisneyBand+, the waterproof wristband uses wireless RFID technology to provide a wide range of different functionalities.

Disneyband+ Functionality

DisneyBand+ wristband simplifies various aspects of the cruise experience. A quick tap of the wristband against the door sensor unlocks guests’ staterooms.

For those looking to make onboard purchases—be it snacks, souvenirs, or beverages—the wristband allows for quick and convenient transactions directly charged to the stateroom accounts.

Children can also use Disneyband+; those aged three and up can use DisneyBand+ to access kids’ clubs onboard, such as Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Scuttle’s Cove at Castaway Cay.

And, while Disney Cruise Line has been somewhat vague on what they term as “enchanting surprises,” they encourage everyone to stay alert for extra magical moments that may be tied to wearing the DisneyBand+.

Adapted to be “adventure-proof,” the wristband is functional even during water-based activities, such as swimming or snorkeling at Castaway Cay. The band is priced at $35 for a solid color and $45 for themed designs, with discounts available for early purchases.

It should be noted that while it adds to onboard convenience, it doesn’t replace the need for traditional “Key to the World” cards for embarking and disembarking at ports.

Compatibility and Current Routes

The Disneyband+ will be available onboard Disney Magic starting October 22, 2023. Currently, the 83,338 gross tons, 3,325-passenger cruise ship is sailing short cruises out of Miami, Florida, to Castaway Cay, Nassau, and Grand Cayman.

On October 5, the ship will be repositioning to the West Coast, sailing from Miami, Florida, to Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; a transit through the Panama Canal; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and arriving in its homeport for the winter, San Diego, California, on October 19.

This means that the first cruise that Disneyband+ will be available will be the four-night ‘Halloween On The High Seas’ cruise, which will visit Catalina Island, California, and Ensenada, Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Line Debunks Yet Another Rumor

Carnival Cruise Line has responded to yet another rumor circulating on social media, debunking the concern and urging guests to avoid believing or perpetuating unfounded information spread through unofficial websites or fan groups. This time, the rumor involves nothing more or less than water, pure and simple.

Yes, Carnival Has Distilled Water for CPAP Machines

The rumor currently persisting through social media is the idea that Carnival Cruise Line will no longer provide distilled water for use in guests’ CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines.

CPAP machines are essential therapy to treat moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, in which airways can become blocked or collapse during sleep. Various designs of these machines are available depending on individual needs and preferences, but nearly all require distilled water as part of a humidifier component, which helps reduce dry mouth and nasal congestion.

Using tap water in a CPAP can cause contamination and may compromise the machine’s operation, while running it without water could cause the motor to burn out.

CPAP Machine
CPAP Machine

The rumor that Carnival would no longer have water for CPAP machines was brought to the attention of John Heald, the cruise line’s brand ambassador, via various complaints and indignation about the supposed new policy. “Anyway, we do have distilled water,” Heald confirmed.

Water can be ordered before a cruise and will be waiting in the guest’s stateroom, or can be ordered through room service onboard and will be delivered. There is a nominal charge for the water, which is currently listed at $3.95 (USD) for a 1.5 liter (50.72 fluid ounces) bottle.

Eight bottles can be purchased for $20, or 12 smaller, half-liter (16.9 fluid ounces) bottles are available for $9.95. All water purchases are also subject to an 18% delivery fee.

If guests do not want to pay for distilled water onboard, they can bring on their own water in accordance with Carnival’s carry on beverage policy.

Guests are asked to pre-purchase water if they will be needing it onboard, in order to ensure the ship has an adequate supply of bottles to meet the demand for each sailing. Occasionally, deliveries to ships can be delayed, which can cause confusion.

“There was a situation this week where one ship did not have their delivery,” Heald explained. “After speaking with the team they arranged for another ship to transfer some in port so all was well.”

Guests Urged to Avoid Rumors

Many different rumors about Carnival Cruise Line have been circulating on social media in recent months, from “no more towel animals” to “gratuities pay crew salaries” to “priority boarding is cancelled” and more.

Each time, enraged social media users flood John Heald’s popular Facebook page with complaints, comments, and more than a few ALL CAPITAL LETTER admonishments about how the cruise line needs to do better.

The problem is, the rumors are untrue, and the cruise line is, in fact, continuing to provide fun and memorable cruise vacations to millions of eager guests. “Please, do your best if you read [social media] take things with a dollop of salt,” Heald urges guests.

Heald answers hundreds of online questions each day, as well as sharing insights into Carnival cruising, providing updates on different issues, offering peeks into special voyages – such as Carnival Luminosa’s current epic 30-night sailing from Seattle to Brisbane – and helping solve problems and concerns for guests onboard.

Rather than rely on social media comments from unauthorized sources, prospective guests are urged to contact John Heald via his Facebook page or reach out to Carnival Cruise Line’s guest services to get accurate, updated information for any of their cruise-related concerns.

Guests Can Be First to Know About Carnival’s New Private Port

Carnival Cruise Line is inviting prospective guests to be the first to know details about the line’s upcoming new destination, Celebration Key, whether or not they already have a cruise booked. Guests can register for exclusive updates and emails with special savings as the July 2025 debut of the new destination approaches.

Register to Know More About Celebration Key

Carnival Cruise Line revealed the name of its new Bahamas destination, Celebration Key, less than a month ago, and now guests can register to receive updates and details as the private destination is developed. A login on Carnival’s website is required, and Very Important Fun People (VIFP) – past guests who are loyal to Carnival Cruise Line – can login with their loyalty number.

“As the first cruise port destination being designed specifically for Carnival guests, we feel it’s important to invite them along for this special journey as we continue to work our way toward the opening of Celebration Key in July 2025,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

The frequency of emails or the information that will be revealed to registered guests have not been detailed, but will likely include first-to-know announcements about which ships will be visiting Celebration Key on which itineraries, as well as upcoming features and amenities at the destination as they are confirmed.

About Celebration Key

Celebration Key is the new $200 million (USD) development being built roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the existing cruise dock in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Ground was officially broken for the new destination in May 2022, and the projected opening is July 2025.

Described as a “uniquely Bahamian experience” Celebration Key will include a mile-long white sand beach, tropical native plant landscaping, a nature reserve, and Bahamian-run retail that will include merchandise, artwork, dining, and more. Not only will this introduce guests to the distinctive culture of the Bahamas, but will also provide economic support to the local community.

“We are working very closely with the Government of The Bahamas and the Grand Bahama Port Authority to ensure that we are highlighting the best of Grand Bahama and its culture, combined with fun like only Carnival can provide,” said Duffy.

Celebration Key will be available only to Carnival Cruise Line guests, a first in the company’s history. For now, Carnival ships call on two other private destinations in the Bahamas – Princess Cays, which is dedicated first to Princess Cruises, as well as Half Moon Cay, which is primarily used by Holland America Line.

While all three cruise lines are part of the Carnival Corporation family, Celebration Key will bring a new “fun” vibe to the Bahamas with a destination specifically designed with Carnival guests in mind.

Carnival Cruise Line has not yet announced which ships or itineraries will be the first to visit Celebration Key, but has hinted that the announcement will be coming in late September 2023.

At least 10 ships are slated to have calls on Celebration Key, from various homeports. It is likely that cruises departing from Miami, Port Canaveral, New York, Tampa, and other homeports that regularly visit the Bahamas will include itineraries visiting Celebration Key, possibly on sailings from 3-10 nights in length.

Part of the plan for the new destination is a lengthy pier that will be able to welcome two Excel-class ships at once, meaning that as many as 13,000 guests could be enjoying the destination at the same time on the same day if both ships were fully booked with all berths filled.

Will you be one of the first to know about Celebration Key, one of the first to visit the new destination, or both?

Carnival Cruise Line Makes Amenity Change at Private Island

Carnival Cruise Line has begun reaching out to guests with scheduled visits to Half Moon Cay to notify them that the island’s Beach Villa Rentals and Beach Cabana Rentals will be changing as of October 1, 2023.

The change – removing the air conditioning at the private villas and cabanas – may impact guests’ decision to rent the exclusive retreats, but guests can cancel their reservations for a full refund if preferred.

Changes to Half Moon Cay Villas and Cabanas

Guests renting the exclusive “Beach Villas” and “Beach Cabanas” on Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas will no longer enjoy the refreshing amenity of air conditioning during their visits. Carnival Cruise Line has reached out to guests who have booked these private retreats with an update on the amenities.

“Kindly note that the Island’s operational team just advised us that from the 1st of October, 2023 the Villas [and Cabanas] on Half Moon Cay will no longer be air-conditioned,” the notification read.

The notification is only being sent to guests who have already pre-booked a Beach Villa or Beach Cabana, and refunds are being offered.

“If this change in the amenities no longer fits your needs, you can log into your portal and cancel your booking for a full refund,” the email continues.

Refunds may take 7-10 business days to process back to the original form of payment, though the exact timing will vary depending on guests’ financial institutions.

No explanation for the removal of air conditioning has been offered. While having air conditioning may not be crucial during the winter months when temperatures are naturally balmy on Half Moon Cay – in October, for example, the average temperature is from 72-86 degrees Fahrenheit (22-30 Celsius) – this could be problematic during the hotter summer months.

Half Moon Cay Cabana
Half Moon Cay Cabana (Photo Credit: gvictoria / Shutterstock)

There is also no indication that the pre-paid prices for these villas and cabanas are being adjusted for the change. Villas run run $1,000 (USD) for a full-day rental per villa, while cabanas are “less expensive” at $700 per day.

Price hikes to both rentals were noted earlier this year, as they had previously been priced at $360-600 per full-day rental less than two years ago.

About Villa and Cabana Rentals

The Beach Villas on Half Moon Cay are an exclusive retreat for up to 8 guests per rental price, though as many as 18 guests can be accommodated at each villa (subject to additional surcharges for guests over the first 8). The smaller Beach Cabanas can accommodate 4 people at the rental price, with a surcharge for an additional two guests if desired.

Both the two-story villas and the single-story cabanas are rented for a full day, which is listed under Carnival Cruise Line’s shore excursions as a 5-hour time period.

Half Moon Cay Cabana

Guests can come and go as they please throughout the day. Snacks such as fresh fruit and chips are included in the rental fee, as well as water and soda.

Each villa also includes a 5-person hot tub, a ceiling fan, an inside dining area, and a misting shower. Guests in the villas also have access to water floating mats and snorkel gear at no extra charge while they use the villa.

Beach Cabanas have similar amenities but lack a hot tub. At this time, there is no mention of any other amenity changes other than the removal of the air conditioning for any of the villas or cabanas.

Visiting Half Moon Cay

Half Moon Cay is a 2,400-acre private island in the Bahamas, formerly known as Little San Salvador Island. The island is frequently visited by Holland America Line ships as well as a number of Carnival cruise ships, depending on the itinerary and sailing date.

Cruises to the Bahamas, as well as Eastern Caribbean itineraries, often include the private destination on the schedule. The private villas and cabanas are located along the island’s pristine beach, but guests should be aware that the beach is public. Only the villa or cabana structure is “private” for the purposes of the daily rentals.

Holland America to Bring Fresh Fish Aboard All Cruise Ships

Holland America Line, a premium brand of Carnival Corporation, is rolling out an ambitious program that will bring fresh fish aboard all of its ships from 60 ports worldwide.

The plan also includes a new pop-up restaurant serving fish cuisine fleet-wide, and the naming of a top chef as the line’s “Fresh Fish Ambassador.”

Holland America to Begin Roll-Out of New Menu Items

Ships sailing in the Holland America Line fleet will soon source fresh fish from 60 global ports, bringing some 80 types of fish to its menus. Under the plan, fresh fish will go from port to plate within 48 hours, and be added to dining room menus on some ships as soon as this week.

Celebrity Chef Masaharu Morimoto has been tapped to serve as Holland America Line’s “Fresh Fish Ambassador,” and will oversee the fresh fish cuisine plus operate a new pop-up fish restaurant, which will begin rolling out in November 2023 and expand fleet-wide in 2024.

Chef Morimoto, the star of “Iron Chef” and “Iron Chef America,” and now executive producer and head judge for Roku’s Sushi Master, is known for integrating Western and Japanese ingredients. He owns restaurants in New York, Philadelphia, and other US cities, and in international cities such as Mumbai, Mexico City, and Tokyo.

Under the new program, Chef Morimoto’s dishes and all seafood dishes served across Holland America Line dining venues will be sourced and prepared as part of the global fresh fish network.

Holland America Line was the first cruise brand to serve fresh and certified sustainable Alaska seafood on board its ships in Alaska, where its sea-to-table dining experience is part of the line’s Alaska Up Close immersive program. With this latest initiative, the line is expanding the idea globally.

Pop-up Fish Restaurant Also to Debut Soon

Chef Morimoto’s pop-up restaurant, called Morimoto by Sea, will be staged in either the Tamarind or Pinnacle Grill specialty dining venues, both of which recently saw price increases on certain items. The eatery will be offered at least once per cruise and will include a specialty dining cover charge of $55 per person. Menus will include vegetarian and vegan options.

Chef Morimoto’s exclusive alcoholic beverages, such as Morimoto Brut Rosé and Sake Junmai Morimoto, will complement his fresh fish cuisine at the pop-up venue.

Embarking on this type of culinary journey at sea is a first for me, and I am excited to bring my passion for fresh fish and fresh ingredients onto Holland America Line’s fleet, said Chef Morimoto.

“I chose to partner with Holland America Line because we share a commitment and passion for fresh and regionally inspired foods, and you will see that come to life in the special dishes and pop-up experience we’ve created together, added Morimoto.

Some of Chef Morimoto’s dining room menu options include Crispy Fried Whole Market Fresh Fish, with a sweet spicy chili sauce; Ishiyaki Buri Bop, featuring Pacific yellowtail on rice and cooked tableside in a hot stone bowl; and Angry Lobster Pad Thai, featuring Maine lobster with rice noodles and Thai red curry sauce.

Along with the main courses, the new offerings from Chef Morimot will include appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. But don’t worry: The desserts will not be from the sea. Guests can look forward to sweet treats like Dark Chocolate Sphere, cheesecake, and White Chocolate Lime Ganache.

Two cruisetours will be featured in Diamond Princess’s 2025 schedule. The 13-day “Highlights of Japan” includes a land tour in Kyoto and Tokyo for the first five days, followed by an eight-day sailing with port calls to Nagasaki, Sakaiminato, and Aomori, and Busan, South Korea.

A 14-day option also features a five-day land tour to the same destinations as the shorter cruise, and a nine-day sailing that calls at Akita, Toyama, Tsuruga, Sakaiminato, and Kagoshima, Japan, plus Busan, South Korea.

Both land tour components offer guests sightseeing at Kyoto’s famous gardens, Nijo Castle, the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple and the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Also featured is Mt. Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Princess Cruises announced in December 2022 that it would return to the Japanese market following the Japanese government’s decision to reopen its ports to international cruise ships. The country had imposed a more than two-year ban on cruise ships during the pandemic.

In 2023, Diamond Princess offered 43 unique itineraries between March and August, on cruises from five to 19 days. Two cruisetours also were offered.
