Another Carnival-Owned Cruise Line Increasing Service Charges

Guests booked on upcoming Cunard Line sailings, including the new Queen Anne, will be paying a bit more for hotel and dining service charges within the next few weeks.

Cunard Line has updated its official website with information about the forthcoming rate increase for these gratuities, which will begin at the end of April 2024.

Cunard Line Gratuity Increase

Cunard Line is increasing the hotel and dining service charges automatically added to guests’ accounts in April 2024. The exact date of the change depends on the individual sailing schedules of different ships, while the amount varies based on stateroom type.

For voyages departing up until April 25, 2024 for Queen Elizabeth, and April 27, 2024 for Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, the service charge for Queens and Princess Grill Suites will be $16.50 per person per day, and Britannia Staterooms will be $14.50 per person per day,the website explains.

After those dates, the service charge for Queens and Princess Grill Suites will increase to $18 per person, per day, while Britannia Staterooms will increase to $16 per person, per day.

These increases calculate to 9% and 10%, respectively. While this is not an exorbitant increase, it can certainly add up over the course of a longer sailing or for family groups. Service charges apply to all guests, regardless of age or loyalty status.

The daily service charges are divided amongst different crew members who provide service to all travelers, including cabin attendants, wait staff, and behind-the-scenes crew members who provide invaluable support to ensure all guests have amazing cruise experiences.

It should be noted that the upcoming Queen Anne will debut in early May, and therefore her gratuity charges will always be assessed at the higher rate.

At the time of the increase, Queen Elizabeth will be offering outstanding voyages from Tokyo, while Queen Mary 2‘s first voyage at the new rate will be a transatlantic cruise from Southampton to New York. Meanwhile, Queen Victoria will be departing from Southampton on a 7-night “Cities of Western Europe” tour.

Second Carnival-Owned Cruise Line to Raise Gratuities in 2024

The upcoming increase will be the second Carnival-owned cruise line to raise automatic gratuity rates in 2024, following a similar rate hike from Holland America Line that is just days away from taking effect.

Cunard Line’s increase is still lower than the new gratuity rate aboard Holland America Line ships, but may signal that other Carnival-owned lines could similarly raise gratuities in the coming weeks.

As of this writing, gratuity rates for other Carnival-owned brands are as follows:

  • Carnival Cruise Line – $16 for standard staterooms; $18 for suites
  • Holland America Line* – $17 for non-suites; $19 for suites (*from February 14, 2024)
  • Costa Cruises – $12 for all stateroom types
  • Princess Cruises – $16 for interior, oceanview, and balcony cabins; $17 for mini-suite and Reserve Collection; $18 for suites

It should be noted that Carnival Corporation & plc also owns luxury line Seabourn, but gratuities are not required or expected on that line as it is a full-service line with an onboard “no tipping” practice. Similarly, P&O Cruises does not add a daily service charge or gratuity, while AIDA Cruises has a completely different pricing model based on the level of service guests choose when booking.

No other major cruise lines have yet announced gratuity increases in 2024, but such changes are undoubtedly coming. When one cruise line begins to make such changes, others typically follow within a few weeks or months with similar adjustments.

Depending on the cruise line, rates may vary based on the type of stateroom as well as guests’ ages, with some lines not charging gratuities for very young travelers.

Carnival Updates Guests After Ship Hits Pier and Remains in Port

Carnival Cruise Line has provided an update to guests onboard Carnival Magic about the ship’s condition and plans for the remainder of their 6-night “ShipRocked” cruise.

This follows a confusing day on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, when the ship inadvertently made contact with the pier in Jamaica, resulting in unusual but essential responses to ensure everyone’s safety.

Carnival Magic Spending Another Day in Jamaica

After heavy swells and strong winds caused the pier to collapse in Jamaica while Carnival Magic was docked, resulting in the ship making contact with the pier, the cruise ship will be remaining in port in Ocho Rios for another full day. This extra time will permit a team of experts to thoroughly assess the ship.

Photos circulating on social media show significant dents and paint scratches on Carnival Magic‘s hull, but it is unknown whether the ship will require immediate repair before continuing her sailing.

Carnival’s notification letter delivered to guests’ staterooms explained the incident, the immediate response, and the plan for Wednesday so everyone is aware of what comes next.

“As you know, Carnival Magic was involved in an incident [Tuesday] morning when strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure, and the ship made contact with the pier. There were no injuries, and all the ship’s services remain operational,” the letter explained.

“For the safety of everyone on board, it was necessary to leave the area and return to dock at another nearby pier. This allowed guests who went ashore to rejoin the ship.”

Carnival Magic was originally planned to depart Ocho Rios at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, but will now remain in port until 5 p.m. on Wednesday while the ship undergoes assessment. The cruise line is making new shore tours available, and guests may also go ashore independently to enjoy more of what the Jamaican hotspot has to offer. All guests must be back aboard Carnival Magic no later than 4:30 p.m.

Next Port Cancelled

The next stop on the itinerary was to have been Grand Cayman, but that visit had already been cancelled due to forecasted weather conditions. The ship staying in Ocho Rios will give passengers more time to have fun ashore. At the same time, the ShipRocked activities for this themed sailing will continue onboard.

“Your hosts ShipRocked and our team will have a full day of concerts and activities for you on board,” the letter read. “We were looking forward to delivering the full itinerary you had expected and share your disappointment, but trust you understand this decision was made with everyone’s safety in mind.”

All Carnival shore excursions, taxes, fees, and port expenses for Grand Cayman are being automatically refunded to guests’ onboard accounts.

The next destination on the itinerary is Bimini in the Bahamas. Carnival Magic is scheduled to visit there on Friday, February 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this time, there are no changes to that plan, but the cruise line will keep guests updated if further alterations to the schedule are necessary.

The 130,000-gross-ton, Dream-class Carnival Magic is currently homeported from Miami, offering 6-, 7-, and 8-night Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean itineraries. The ship can welcome 3,690 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,724 travelers when fully booked with all berths filled.

Also onboard are more than 1,300 international officers and crew members to ensure everyone remains safe and has a truly magical cruise vacation.

Cunard, the iconic British cruise line that operates some of the world’s best-known ships, experienced a stellar booking month in January, breaking previous records for similar timeframes in the last 10 years.

The cruise line, a Carnival Corporation brand, is in the spotlight this year as it gears up for the highly anticipated launch of its first new ship in more than a decade.

Reservations Rise By a Stunning 25%

January proved to be a robust booking month for Cunard Line, with the number of guests booking staterooms ballooning by 25% compared to the highest booking level of the past decade. Bookings are in demand for 2024 as well as future years.

Part of the celebratory atmosphere at Cunard is tied to the upcoming launch of its first new ship since 2010, Queen Anne, due to enter service in early May 2024. The 3,000-guest Pinnacle-class ship will join Cunard’s existing fleet — Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Victoria.

As we prepare to navigate what is set to be a truly ground-breaking year for Cunard, it has been fantastic to have such a strong start to the year. The appeal of Cunard is strong for guests across the world and is particularly strong for sailings across Europe on our new ship Queen Anne,” said Katie McAlister, president of Cunard.

The upbeat booking report from January 2024 followed an exceptional sales record from early 2023, when Cunard reported having its busiest wave season in the previous decade. Wave season refers to the industry’s tradition of offering its best promotional fares and perks during the first quarter of each year.

At the time, summer itineraries and the maiden season of Queen Anne were seeing strong momentum. Among the summer itineraries likely to be in high demand in 2024 are Alaska cruises.

A series of sailings aboard Queen Elizabeth are being enhanced with new pre- and post-cruise add-on tours aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train. The Vista-class ship, carrying 2,092 guests, will cruise roundtrip from Vancouver, British Columbia, on 7- to 12-day voyages along the Alaskan coast.

Cunard to Celebrate Queen Anne’s Launch in May 2024

Anticipation is building for Cunard’s newest ship, Queen Anne. The ship will debut on May 3, 2024 with her maiden voyage roundtrip from Southampton, England, but her naming ceremony will be held a month later in Liverpool, England.

Cunard announced on February 5, 2024 that Queen Anne will be christened with great fanfare in Liverpool on June 3, 2024 during a voyage around the British Isles. The 14-night journey will depart Southampton on May 24, 2024, with the ship calling at Edinburgh, Invergordon, and Greenock, Scotland; Belfast, Northern Ireland; and Liverpool. The line has not yet revealed who the ship’s godmother or godfather will be.

The cruise line, in recent months, has revealed details about the design, services, and amenities the new vessel will offer guests. She will, for example, offer outstanding cuisine under the guidance of two-Michelin star chef Michel Roux. The chef is best known for his longtime London restaurant, Le Gavroche.

Roux is working with Cunard’s culinary development team to create a unique gala menu exclusively for the ship‘s Queens Grill restaurant. Cunard will open four new dining venues aboard Queen Anne, including Aji Wa, offering Japanese specialties; Aranya, dishing up Indian cuisine; Sir Samuels, with steaks and seafood; and Tramonto, serving Mediterranean-inspired fare.

High Winds Cause Difficulties for Ships at Royal Caribbean Island

Royal Caribbean International’s private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay, did not live up to its name on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 as high winds buffeted the pier and caused two ships to recall passengers early.

While one ship departed early, the other has remained alongside the pier, fighting near gale-force winds that make it impossible to maneuver safely away from the dock.

Not-So-Perfect-Day at CocoCay

While the sun was shining for much of the day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, incoming high winds cut short the visit of two vessels on Tuesday, February 6.

Both Freedom of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas were visiting the island, but as a poor weather system moved into the area, strong winds forced guests to be recalled and the island to be shut down.

The call to return to their respective ships reached guests at about 1 p.m. in the afternoon, requesting that everyone reboard their vessels before the pier had to be closed for safety concerns. At the same time, the ships’ gangways were closed so no one could leave the ships onto the island.

Online videos show large crowds of guests returning to their ships, while lifeguards and crew members in rain gear provided a guideline to encourage guests to move along and make sure no one was too close to the pier’s edge. In the background, waves can be seen crashing against the island and, at times, spilling across the pier.

A short time later, additional videos showed much more aggressive waves crashing over the pier itself, with some of the colorful awnings coming loose in the fierce winds. At that time, no guests or crew members were on the pier.

No injuries have been reported, nor have either Freedom of the Seas or Oasis of the Seas suffered any reported damage during the foul weather.

Departing the Island

Freedom of the Seas was the smaller of the two vessels at 156,271 gross tons, while Oasis of the Seas is 226,838 gross tons. Oasis of the Seas was docked on the pier’s west side, taking the full brunt of the winds and partially sheltering Freedom of the Seas.

This allowed Freedom of the Seas to more easily move away from the pier and depart CocoCay. Oasis of the Seas, however, remained docked but not moored – against the pier but without lines tethering her to the structure. Unfortunately, the near gale-force winds from the north-northwest have held the ship against the pier and her thrusters have not been sufficient to maneuver her safely away from the dock.

As Oasis of the Seas remains at CocoCay, wind speeds are reported at 25 knots (29 miles per hour / 46 kilometers per hour), with gusts significantly higher. It is unknown how long the ship may remain at the island, but conditions are undoubtedly being continually monitored and the ship will depart as soon as it is safe to do so.

Oasis of the Seas is currently sailing a 7-night Western Caribbean Perfect Day itinerary that departed Miami, Florida on Sunday, February 5. The ship also has visits scheduled for Nassau, Labadee, and Jamaica, but continued poor weather may impact the itinerary further before the ship returns to Miami on February 11.

Freedom of the Seas, meanwhile, is on a 4-night Bahamas sailing with visits to CocoCay and Nassau on her itinerary. She also set sail on Sunday, and is due to return to Miami on Friday, February 9.

No ships are scheduled to visit CocoCay on Wednesday, February 7, and the strong winds are expected to die down by Thursday, February 8, when Liberty of the Seas and Allure of the Seas are planned to dock at the private island.

Strong Winds Impacting Multiple Cruise Lines

The strong winds moving through the Caribbean are impacting different ships in different locations. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Magic, for example, inadvertently impacted the pier in Ocho Rios, Jamaica due to swells and strong winds, while Carnival Sunshine had to cancel her planned visit to Princess Cays and Carnival Venezia had to cancel a stop at Half Moon Cay.

Also recently, a sudden storm in the Gulf of Mexico impacted Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas, flooding some public areas and guest staterooms. The damage could not be fully corrected by the next sailing, leading to compensation offers for affected guests.

Winter weather can be unpredictable in the Caribbean, and any guests setting sail during the winter months should be prepared for unexpected bad storms, itinerary changes, and other impacts to their vacation plans. All cruise lines keep guests’ safety and comfort as their foremost considerations, however, and do everything possible to provide amazing vacations.

Carnival Cruise Ship Cancels Port Visit Due to Bad Weather

Poor weather impacting Princess Cays on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, caused Carnival Sunshine to cancel her planned visit to the private island.

Unfortunately, this means passengers have missed their final port of call on the 5-night cruise, as no viable alternative destination is available.

Carnival Sunshine Itinerary Change

Carnival Sunshine is currently sailing a 5-night Bahamas itinerary roundtrip from Charleston, South Carolina. Due to a severe weather front that is moving east across the region, however, the ship was unable to call on Princess Cays as originally planned on Tuesday, February 6. Guests were notified of the change by letters delivered to their staterooms onboard on Monday evening.

“Our Fleet Operations Center has been actively monitoring the weather system that is moving in an easterly direction across the region. Unfavorable conditions that would make water shuttle operations unsafe are expected for Princess Cays tomorrow,” the letter explained.

“Regrettably, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our planned visit. Since there are no viable alternatives to add a port visit, we will spend Tuesday at sea.”

While there was no indication of rain or other unpleasant weather at Princess Cays on Tuesday, strong winds were undoubtedly generating swells that would have made water shuttle operations dangerous for moving guests between the cruise ship and the dock on the west coast of the island.

Carnival Sunshine was to have been visiting Princess Cays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time, steady wind speeds from the northwest and west-northwest reached as high as 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour), with gusts recorded as high as 36 mph (58 kph).

In those conditions, severe swells could make it very challenging for guests to move on and off the water shuttles as they are held against the cruise ship. Even though the dock area is sheltered, entering the docking basin with the water shuttle could also be challenging, particularly if a gust rocked the boat.

Furthermore, a severely rocking shuttle could be very uncomfortable for guests who may be susceptible to motion sickness.

Cruise lines never want to change itineraries or cancel ports of call, especially at the last minute, but such decisions are always made with guests’ safety and comfort in mind.

All shore tours purchased through Carnival Cruise Line for Princess Cays will be automatically refunded to guests’ onboard accounts, along with taxes, fees, and associated port expenses.

What Goes On When a Port Is Cancelled?

With last-minute arrangements, the Fun Squad onboard Carnival Sunshine would have put together extra activities, including trivia contests, games, dance lessons, and other options for guests to enjoy since they cannot enjoy Princess Cays. Likewise, the entertainment staff may have planned an impromptu performance, or an onboard comedian might do an extra show.

The exact options available during an unexpected day at sea vary based on ship’s resources and crew members, and might even include options such as a language lesson from crew members, board games for use, or crazy deck games. Of course, the ship’s facilities – including the spa, pools, and casino – would also be available.

Carnival Sunshine – formerly Carnival Destiny before her extensive 2013 renovation – is a 103,000-gross-ton ship capable of welcoming 3,002 guests at double occupancy, or up to 3,758 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also on board are more than 1,000 international officers and crew members.

The ship is currently homeported from Charleston, South Carolina, offering a range of Bahamas itineraries from from 4-6 nights. The ship also occasionally offers 8-night Eastern Caribbean sailings.

In early 2025, Carnival Sunshine will be repositioned to homeport from Norfolk, Virginia, offering similar sailings from the new embarkation port.

Norwegian Cruise Line to Operate Cruises from Jacksonville

In a groundbreaking move, the JAXPORT Board of Directors has approved a significant partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), marking the addition of a second seasonal cruise operation from Jacksonville, Florida. This move promises to enrich the local tourism sector, create jobs, and offer an array of tropical getaway options to passengers.

A New Era for Jacksonville’s Cruise Industry

In an exciting development, the JAXPORT Board of Directors has unanimously approved a three-year agreement with NCL. Starting in November 2025, Norwegian Gem, boasting a capacity of 2,394 passengers, will homeport in Jacksonville.

The ship will offer seasonal cruises through April each year until 2028. The cruises will include destinations to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean, signaling a new era in the North Florida’s growing drive-to cruise market.

David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. 

“Today marks a new milestone in the relationship between Norwegian Cruise Line and JAXPORT,” he said. “We look forward to Norwegian Gem’s arrival to Jacksonville in November 2025, and welcoming guests from the area, as well as neighboring cities and states.”

The initative is anticipated to substantially boost to Jacksonville’s tourism appeal, leveraging the strategic advantage of having more than 98 million consumers living within driving distance of the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal.

JAXPORT’s Strategic Expansion

As JAXPORT, a full-service international cargo and cruise seaport located in Jacksonville, embarks on a significant expansion through this collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line, it build upon the legacy initiated by Carnival Cruise Lines.

The christening of Carnival Miracle at the Port of Jacksonville in February 2004 marked the beginning of Jacksonville’s journey in the cruise service industry.

Today, as Norwegian Cruise Line becomes the second cruise operator to sail from Jacksonville, it represents a significant milestone in JAXPORT’s ongoing efforts to diversify and expand its offerings.

According to a 2019 study, the cruise industry in Jacksonville plays a crucial role in the regional economy, supporting nearly 800 jobs and contributing over $187 million annual economic impact to Northeast Florida.

A key factor driving the popularity of cruising out of Jacksonville is the port’s easy access, with 60% of travelers highlighting this as their primary reason for choosing Jacksonville.

The Norwegian Gem Experience

Norwegian Gem is gearing up to introduce passengers to tropical retreats, beginning its journey from Jacksonville in November 2025. The vessel will offer three 12-day and two 11-day roundtrip voyages across the serene waters of the Eastern Caribbean.

The voyages will include exotic locales such as Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; St. Thomas and St. John’s, U.S. Virgin Islands; Antigua; Basseterre, St. Kitts; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and more.

Additionally, the ship will conduct a series of 4- and 5-day cruises to The Bahamas, featuring stops at Great Stirrup Cay, Freeport, and Nassau. Bookings for these sailings will open on February 15, 2024.

Carnival’s Continued Presence in Jacksonville

Carnival Cruise Line, as the pioneering cruise operator from Jacksonville, continues to offer a variety of short cruises to the Bahamas from JAXPORT.

Carnival Elation, providing year-round voyages, includes 4- and 5-night itineraries to destinations like Nassau, Freeport, Bimini, Princess Cays, and Half Moon Cay.

Starting July 2025, Carnival Elation will also include visits to Carnival’s new Celebration Key private island in its itinerary, enriching the cruise options available from Jacksonville.

Scheduled to sail from Jacksonville through at least April 2026, Carnival Elation underscores Carnival’s ongoing commitment to Jacksonville, complementing the city’s expanding cruise portfolio and enhancing its appeal as a versatile cruise destination.

Carnival Ship Hits Pier During High Winds, Remains Overnight

The Dream-class Carnival Magic was forced to temporarily depart the port in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, during its visit on February 6, 2024. Bad weather conditions, including string swells and winds, caused the vessel to hit the pier. This resulted in the passengers already ashore being left until Carnival Magic could safely return.

Carnival stated to Cruise Hive,Carnival Magic was involved in an incident while in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 when strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure, and the ship made contact with the pier. The ship was alongside at 8:10 a.m. and the incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. There were no injuries, and all the ship’s services remained operational.

Those passengers who were still ashore were taken care of by the cruise line’s Care team and local tour partners. Also docked in Ocho Rios was Costa Pacifica from sister line Costa Cruises. That vessel was docked at the nearby Reynolds Pier, and Carnival Magic was able to dock there instead once the Costa vessel departed the port.

The ship left the area for the safety of everyone on board and later docked at another nearby pier so that guests who went ashore Tuesday morning could rejoin the ship. The guests who were ashore at the time were taken care of by the Carnival team and shore excursion partners. Given the weather conditions in the region, Carnival Magic will remain in Ocho Rios on Tuesday night. Its visit to Grand Cayman is cancelled for Wednesday,Carnival added.

The Miami-based cruise line is keeping all guests updated on the situation, and more details are set to be released in the coming hours. The damage to the Carnival cruise ship is unknown at the time and would likely take time to be assessed. Carnival Magic’s scheduled visit to Grand Cayman has been cancelled, and the vessel is remaining overnight docked in Ocho Rios.

During a visit to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, Carnival Magic impacted and significantly damaged the pier. There is no word yet on how severe the damage is, though videos circulating online show the entire structure shifting and extensive broken concrete. The ship may likewise be damaged, but any damage on the vessel is not yet confirmed.

Carnival Magic Hits Pier in Ocho Rios

Carnival Magic was not originally intended to visit Ocho Rios today, but the ship was in fact in port. This is due to weather-related itinerary changes that brought the ship to the port a day earlier than initially planned due to a severe weather system moving across the region.

Unfortunately, the weather still proved to be an obstacle for the ship, as strong winds drove the vessel into the dock, causing extensive damage to the concrete structure.

A short video clip of the incident shows the end of the dock – where refueling equipment is kept on hand – cracking and crumbling under the pressure from the ship’s impact. The rest of the dock structure likewise shifts somewhat as the ship pushes against it.

There is no word as to whether or not the ship was damaged in the impact, though at least cosmetic damage – scratches or minor dents on the hull – are unavoidable. No injuries have been reported.

The ship’s master, Captain La Farina, did reach out to guests to alert them to the situation, as crew members were called to muster stations to respond to the emergency.

“Earlier, due to strong winds, the ship made contact with the pier, impacting a small area of the vessel,” the notification read. “These wind conditions are making it unsafe for us to remain docked. So, for safety reasons, it was necessary for us to sail out to sea.”

Because a number of guests were onshore enjoying Ocho Rios at the time, it was necessary for those passengers to be left behind as the ship moved away from the damaged dock. They are not left behind at the port in the same manner as if they had missed the boarding time, however.

“We are now in contact with our local partners and our Fleet Operations Center and are working through plans to get our guests who are ashore back on board as soon as possible,” La Farina said.

Winds near Jamaica today are from the north and west, steady at speeds up to 17 knots (20 miles per hour / 31 kilometers per hour). From that direction, the winds would have been pushing broadside on the ship alongside the dock, exerting considerable force to move the vessel into the dock structure.

At this time, there is no confirmation of whether the cruise ship may be able to move back into position to reboard guests, or if smaller boats may be used to bring passengers out to the ship. Another option may be for Carnival Magic to move to Montego Bay – 62 miles (100 kilometers) west – to reboard guests, who would be shuttled from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay, a 2-hour drive.

On her revised itinerary, Carnival Magic was scheduled to be docked in Ocho Rios from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6. Wednesday will now be a day in Grand Cayman, Thursday a day at sea, and Friday a visit to Bimini – if there are no further weather-related itinerary adjustments or if no changes are needed due to this incident.

Carnival Magic is due back in Miami on Saturday morning to begin debarkation at 8 a.m.

What Will Happen Next?

A full investigation into the collision will be initiated, and both the ship and pier will be thoroughly inspected for structural soundness and operational capability. Undoubtedly, part of the pier will need to be closed while repairs are made, though there is no confirmation yet whether or not that may impact visits from additional ships in the coming days.

In addition to Carnival Cruise Line, ships from Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Line, TUI Cruises, and Costa Cruises are all scheduled to visit Ocho Rios throughout February.

As this is the busy season for cruise visits to Jamaica, it may be challenging to accommodate multiple ships if the pier damage is too extensive or cannot be repaired to safely dock vessels.

It is important to note that Carnival Magic remains safe with all hotel operations functional at this time, and guests on board are in no danger. Some services have been temporarily suspended as crew members are called to emergency duties, but will be resumed as soon as possible.

The 130,000-gross-ton, Dream-class Carnival Magic is currently homeported from Miami through April 2026, offering 6- and 8-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, with occasional Southern Caribbean itineraries. She can welcome 3,690 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,724 passengers when fully booked. Also onboard are over 1,300 international crew members.

This particular sailing – the February 4 departure for a 6-night sailing, is the themed “ShipRocked” cruise with “The Dark Lord Count Von Skully” hosting an amazing lineup of rock artists, theme nights, and more for the undead-themed sailing.

The actress will help Princess Cruises celebrate a big jump in onboard weddings in the Australian market.

Aussie Guests Embrace Shipboard Wedding Ceremonies

Princess Cruises’s Celebrations Ambassador, Jill Whelan, an actress in the cast of “The Love Boat” who played Vicki Stubing (Captain Stubing’s daughter), will sail aboard the line’s 3,600-guest Royal Princess to mark Valentine’s Day in the Australia/New Zealand market.

Whelan, who is returning to Australia for the first time in 40 years, will attend a special event focused on Princess Cruises’ Princess Perfect Weddings, a series of shipboard packages for guests who wish to hold their wedding ceremonies onboard a ship.

The actor’s visit coincides with significant spikes in weddings at sea on Princess Cruises’ ships sailing in the Australia region. The cruise line reports a 127% spike in wedding ceremony bookings Down Under, plus an 83% rise in the number of ceremonies that were held from 2022 to 2023.

The cruise line’s announcement that Whelan would join the Royal Princess did not specify the ship’s itinerary, nor did it indicate what the onboard special event would be. However, Royal Princess is set to depart on a Valentine’s Day cruise February 14, 2024, roundtrip from Auckland, New Zealand, and with several calls in Australia.

The 17-day itinerary features visits to Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, Australia, plus Bay of Islands, Dunedin, Wellington, and Tauranga, New Zealand.

Cruise Line Touts Cost-Effective Weddings at Sea

The increase on shipboard weddings is a boon to Princess Cruises, which offers couples a choice of packages with various amenities and services. In some cases, weddings at sea can be cost-effective compared to traditional wedding events.

Princess Cruises offers three basic packages for various group sizes. The Perfect Pair Wedding covers costs for an event, including the couple and up to two guests. The Timeless Ceremony at Sea is geared to a couple and up to eight guests, and for larger groups, the line offers Timeless Wedding at Sea, a package for a couple and up to 18 guests.

The “Love Boat” cruise line in 2023 took steps to further solidify its role as a top wedding-at-sea choice. In June 2023, Princess Cruises named Randy Fenoli as its Love and Romance Ambassador. Fenoli is best known for his roles in the popular TV shows “Randy to the Rescue” and “Say Yes to the Dress.”

In December 2023, the celebrity hosted a bridal fashion-themed cruise onboard Regal Princess. The 7-night Western Caribbean cruise sailed from Galveston, Texas, and offered guests the opportunity to enjoy personalized wedding gown consultations.

Princess Cruises, a Carnival Corporation brand, operates 15 ships and will soon launch its 16th, when Sun Princess debuts. The ship was due to enter service on February 8, 2024 but her delivery by the Fincantieri shipyard has been delayed, forcing the line to cancel her maiden sailing. A new delivery date has not been revealed.

The milestone underscores a growing trend among travelers seeking immersive and authentic experiences in destinations that offer breathtaking natural beauty and a sense of adventure and exploration.

“Alaska is so much more than a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises. “This is our 55th anniversary of taking guests to the great land, and this soaring interest underscores the importance of securing an Alaska adventure for the upcoming summer season while availability still remains.”

Journeys to America’s Last Frontier with Princess

Princess Cruises is responding to this increased interest with an expanded array of Alaska cruise options for 2024 and 2025, offering everything from short 4-day samplers to extensive 22-day cruisetours. 

Notable experiences include cruising through the Inside Passage, voyaging to Glacier Bay National Park, and exclusive cruisetours that provide in-depth explorations of Alaska’s interior, including visits to Denali National Park, Fairbanks, and Anchorage (Whittier).

Departures are scheduled from various homeports, including San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Whittier, and Los Angeles.

Starting rates for a 4-Day “Alaska Sampler” cruise from Vancouver, Canada, to Seattle, Washington, with one port stop in Ketchikan, Alaska, are $297 for an interior cabin on the Discovery Princess. This ship can accommodate 3,660 passengers.

Launched in March 2022, Discovery Princess is the newest ship in the Princess Cruises line, the third designed from the ground up with Princess MedallionClass, and the final Royal-class ship. 

A 5-day “Alaska Sampler” roundtrip from Vancouver to Sitka and Ketchikan on the Caribbean Princess, which can carry 3,140 passengers, starts at $ 377.

For a 7-day cruise, rates start at $399. The Vancouver to Anchorage route, for example, stops in Juneau and Skagway, and provides scenic visits to Glacier Bay National Park and College Fjord. This cruise is offered on the Grand Princess, a ship with a tonnage of 107,517 and a capacity for 2,600 passengers.

Princess Cruises is enhancing the value of Alaska voyages with its Princess Plus and Premier inclusive packages, offering passengers the chance to save more than 65% savings on essential amenities such as gratuities, Wi-Fi, and beverages. 

Rising Competition and Environmental Considerations

The surge in Alaska bookings for Princess Cruises comes amid a broader trend of increasing popularity for Alaskan cruises, prompting other major cruise lines to expand their itineraries in the region.

Royal Caribbean, Cunard, and Holland America Line have all announced enhanced Alaska offerings for the 2025 season, showcasing a variety of ships and routes designed to meet the growing demand.

Royal Caribbean is set to deploy four ships to Alaska in 2025. Similarly, Cunard unveiled an extraordinary 2025 season with its Queen Elizabeth offering 25 voyages. Holland America Line has also opened bookings for its 2025 Alaska cruisetours.

While the demand for Alaskan cruises continues to grow, Alaska is currently engaged in discussions to potentially limit cruise ship passengers in certain areas. Some Alaskan cities have considered petitions to limit the number of cruise visitors, though proposals have seen mixed responses from local governments and communities.
